PLEDGE VEGAN FOR VEGANUARY! As the New Year rolls around, everyone’s humming the ‘new year, new you’ tune. For those of you who want to challenge yourself, why not give Veganuary a go? This feature has you covered, with everything from the basics of what it means to be a vegan, to the health benefits and where best to satisfy your vegan appetites.

WHAT IS VEGANUARY? Veganuary is an annual movement that has gained momentum and marked the start of the calendar year for many a healthconscious foodie over the past decade. Launched in 2014, Veganuary (a portmanteau of ‘vegan’ and ‘January’) is an initiative by a UK-based nonprofit that encourages people to embrace a vegan lifestyle throughout the month of January. But what does it really mean to be vegan? The essence of Veganuary involves steering clear of all animal-derived products for the month. It's a challenge that invites participants to explore a meat-free, dairy-free and cruelty-free diet, excluding not only meats but also fish, poultry, dairy, eggs and even honey. The campaign serves as a platform to promote and educate about veganism. According to the official website, Veganuary’s popularity has been remarkable and in 2023 it broke all previous records, with 706,965 people officially signing up from nearly every country in the world.

VEGANISM IN ESSENCE Beyond a month-long commitment, veganism embodies a holistic philosophy that seeks to minimise animal exploitation and cruelty in all spheres of life. It goes beyond dietary choices, extending to clothing, cosmetics and other products derived wholly or partly from animals. Veganism advocates for ethical alternatives that benefit not only animals but also human health and the environment. The underlying motivations behind embracing a vegan lifestyle vary from person to person, be it ethical considerations, environmental consciousness or personal health goals. 32

fact magazine

WHY IS IT GAINING POPULARITY? Veganism's become the talk of the town lately, and it's not just a passing fad. Google search trends reveal heightened interest in vegan-related topics, with countries like the UK, Australia and the US leading the search queries. Also, as per online data platform, Statista, the global vegan food market surged to nearly USD16 billion in 2021, a figure expected to surpass USD24 billion by 2026, indicating a growing demand for plant-based alternatives. Greater awareness regarding the treatment of animals within the food industry has prompted many to shift toward a vegan diet. Endorsements by celebrities and influencers have also normalised veganism, making it more acceptable in mainstream culture. Accessibility to plant-based alternatives in stores and restaurants has further encouraged the adoption of vegan diets.

So, we caught up with Danah Quintana, a clinical dietitian at Al Malaki Specialist Hospital, to discuss vegetarian and vegan diets. “An appropriately planned vegetarian/vegan diet can be healthy, nutritionally adequate and provide health benefits in the treatment and prevention of certain diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer and even obesity,” she said. According to Danah, the high intake of nutrient-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts and seeds that are packed with fibre and phytonutrients and the low intake of saturated fats, can help lower cholesterol levels and improve blood sugar control. This can contribute to the reduction and risk of chronic diseases. On who should consider veganism, she says that a wellstructured vegetarian/vegan diet can be suitable for all stages of life, from pregnancy and infancy to older adulthood and even for athletes. She emphasises that it’s important to ensure one eats a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds and whole grains. It's also vital to swap unhealthy fats with healthier alternatives and to maintain portion control. Even with nutritious, low-fat, plantbased foods, consuming excess calories can lead to weight gain. Thus, she recommends keeping an eye on food labels and incorporating regular physical activity into your routine.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Apart from the significant health benefits, a vegan lifestyle also positively impacts our environment. As shown in research 34

fact magazine

published by Nature Food, opting for a vegan diet can substantially reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water pollution and land use by as much as 75%, compared to diets high in meat consumption. It also reduces the destruction of wildlife by 66%. Moreover, according to the Vegan Society, plant-based foods require significantly less water compared to animal products and can reduce water use by 54%, which means that adopting a plant-based diet is an effective way of conserving water resources – a win-win, we say! Another important point is that cattle grazing generates substantial amounts of methane and carbon dioxide – potent GHGs that contribute to climate change. Therefore, by choosing a vegan lifestyle, we can help reduce the release of these harmful gases and keep both the cows and Mother Earth happy.

VEGANISM IN BAHRAIN Over the past few years, veganism has been flourishing in Bahrain. From an influx of plant-based brands in the supermarkets to vegan menus entering the restaurant arena, the local food scene has had a tremendous facelift when it to comes to vegan choices. An example is the plant-based menu, Folia, which was introduced a few years ago at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay by celebrated Chef Matthew Kenney. Others have followed suit and many of the five-star hotels now either serve plant-based options or offer full vegan menus. Even standalone restaurants and cafés are becoming more food conscious, catering to vegan palates. We spoke with various local brands and long-term vegans to get their views on plant-based lifestyles and their experience of veganism in Bahrain.

YARA ALGOSAIBI, FOUNDER OF PLANT CAFÉ On why she became vegan… Initially it was due to personal health concerns and decline in energy levels. I decided to go on a cleanse and all the meals provided were vegan. I noticed an improvement in my health and decided to extend the cleanse. Meanwhile, I started researching veganism – this led me to explore the industry of animal agriculture and I learned about the [often] abusive conditions animals are reared in. On interesting vegan trends in Bahrain… Unfortunately, the current trend is not a healthy one; fake meats and processed meat substitutes have found their way into Bahrain’s market. I think when so called ‘foods' require labs and factories to be engineered, it’s best to avoid them.

PLANT CAFE

MUNEERA OBAIDLI, FOUNDER OF UNICORN NOMS On what inspired her to become a vegan… I became vegan after learning how terribly animals are treated for the food industry. But veganism is not only for animals, it’s also for the sustainability of our planet and helping to stop world hunger. It can also be a healthier way to eat. On why she opened a vegan café… I wanted to create a space where both vegans and non-vegans can enjoy delicious food together. My restaurant has both vegan and vegetarian options and we also offer gluten-free alternatives for most items. The idea is that you don’t need to sacrifice going out and having a good time in order to be kind.

UNICORN NOMS

SOPHIE MIDDLETON, FOUNDER OF RAW CANDY On what inspired her to open Raw Candy… I was inspired by my family, we love sweets! And I wanted to provide yummy nutritious versions of some of my childhood favourites. A cookie a day keeps the frowns away! On any interesting vegan trends to watch out for… Matcha, matcha, matcha! It’s everywhere and soon, in everything. Try out our oat milk matcha lattes. We use Chawan matcha, the BEST local supplier.

• COVER STORY REEMA ALI

REEMA ALI, FOUNDER OF REEM GOURMET On her motivation for opening a vegan café… I'm passionate about healthy living and wanted to create a space where others can enjoy delicious and nutritious food. My menu isn’t entirely vegan but most of our products are, especially cheese. On interesting vegan trends in Bahrain… While upscale vegan restaurants have existed in Bahrain for some time, there's a growing demand for casual, affordable vegan dining options. Look out for new vegan cafes and fast-food outlets popping up across the country. Street food is a beloved part of Bahraini culture. Thankfully, there's a growing trend of veganising popular street food items like falafel and samosas.

LOUISE O’LOAN

LOUISE O’LOAN, LONG-TERM VEGAN On how to build a nutritionally balanced diet as a vegan… I certainly have NOT mastered this. A hearty burger, satisfying pasta, fully loaded pizza, fries and desserts will always win over a sad salad any day. That said, I actively minimalise reliance on substitute ‘foods’ as these tend to be more detrimental. More traditional dishes tend to already have a diverse array of nutrients. Bahraini breakfasts are a favourite of many, packed full of fibre, protein and sustenance. On any changes in her health since turning vegan… Absolutely, I used to often get floored by allergies, particularly, with cat and dog dander. Dairy is definitely one of the more antagonising A Box of Goodness agents for many people, especially during the cold and flu season. Where it used to take four to five days, it is now a lot milder with a day or two of the sniffles.

SHIVANI SATHASIVAM

SHIVANI SATHASIVAM, PLANT-BASED CAMPAIGNER On what inspired her to become vegan and start plantbasedbh… My overnight switch to a plant-based lifestyle was primarily inspired by documentaries like What The Health and Earthlings. These films opened my eyes to the reality of factory farming and the health risks of consuming animal products on a regular basis. They motivated me to not only change my diet but also to spread awareness through my campaign @plantbasedbh, which encourages people to include more plant-based food in their diet. On the one thing she misses eating as a vegan… Honestly, since most things can be made plant based, I don't find myself missing much. I eat a larger variety of foods now than I did while eating meat. However, if I had to pick, I occasionally miss the convenience of non-vegan options, especially when travelling or dining out.

MYTHS & FACTS With so many myths and stereotypes about veganism, we shed light on some of the common misconceptions of this increasingly popular lifestyle and dietary choice.

MYTHS VEGANS LACK PROTEIN

Vegan diets can provide all essential amino acids through a variety of plant-based sources, such as lentils, beans, tofu, quinoa and more.

VEGANISM LEADS TO NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES

A well-planned vegan diet can meet all nutritional needs, including vitamins B12, iron, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, through plant-based sources and supplements, if necessary. Many fortified foods are also available for essential nutrients.

VEGANS LACK CALCIUM

Calcium can be obtained from various plant-based sources, such as leafy greens, fortified plant milk, tofu, almonds and sesame seeds, among others.

VEGANS DON'T GET ENOUGH IRON

A well-planned vegan diet provides ample iron by incorporating numerous plant-based foods rich in non-heme iron, such as leafy greens and kidney beans.

VEGANISM IS INHERENTLY HEALTHIER

Although a well-balanced vegan diet can offer health benefits, processed vegan foods high in sugar, fat or sodium may not be as healthy as their non-vegan counterparts.

VEGANISM IS EXPENSIVE

While speciality vegan products might be costly, a plantbased diet centred around whole foods can be cost-effective and affordable.

VEGANISM IS ONLY ABOUT DIET

Veganism extends beyond food and involves a lifestyle that avoids animal exploitation and cruelty in clothing, cosmetics, entertainment and other aspects of life.

VEGAN DIETS LACK TASTE AND VARIETY

Vegan cuisine is incredibly diverse, offering a vast array of flavours and textures. With creativity and exploration, there are countless delicious and varied plant-based recipes to enjoy.

VEGANISM MEANS GIVING UP FAVOURITE FOODS

Many non-vegan foods have vegan alternatives and there's a growing availability of substitutes for dairy, meat, eggs and other animal products that taste similar or even better than the originals.

EMBRACING VEGANISM As Veganuary continues to gain traction and its global interest skyrockets, the Kingdom’s embrace of veganism isn't just a passing trend. This once niche dietary choice has transformed into a vibrant movement in Bahrain’s culture, sparking a new era of conscious eating amongst individuals from all walks of life. Veganism is all about making choices that feel good, for our bodies, animals and the Earth we call home. It's not about being perfect – rest assured there will be no vegan police knocking on your door! It's about doing what we can, one veggie burger at a 42

THE ELECTRIFYING NEW AUDI E-TRON This month FACT had an all-electric experience in Audi’s impressive new e-Tron GT Quattro. 44

W • ISLAND RIDES

ith many high-end brands rapidly moving towards an all-electric future, premium car manufacturers, Audi, refuse to be left behind. In fact, they are one of the brands spearheading this paradigm shift in

automotive focus. The Audi e-Tron series is a range of electric and hybrid vehicles developed by the company over the last 15 years. Unveiling their first e-Tron concept vehicle at the 2009 International Motor Show in Germany, they only released a plug-in hybrid model, the A3 Sportback e-Tron, in 2014. It was in 2019 that they introduced the first fully-electric version. Recently, FACT had the chance to test drive the latest generation (2024) Audi e-Tron GT Quattro, compliments of the team at Audi Centre Bahrain.

Distinguished Exterior Design With a wide and flat body sitting on a long wheelbase, our first impression of the 2024 Audi e-Tron was that it has the proportions of a Gran Turismo. Wherever our eyes rested on the e-Tron, we appreciated its aerodynamic design. From the intelligent air inlets at the front to the vented wheel arches at the sides, to the striking rear diffuser, this car has been configured to slice effortlessly through the air. Just looking at this modish coupé made us itch to get out on the roads. From head-on, the LED headlights with dynamic turn signal sit stylishly at the front of the indented bonnet, drawing the eye to the famous four rings – a promise to all would-be buyers of the exceptional quality of this vehicle. We collectively agreed that the muscular fender flares help to endow the Audi with an athletic stance, as do the five-segment ‘Aero’ style wheels with platinum grey finish and our model’s 21-inch tyres. At the back end, an animated light strip runs across the car’s entire width, framed at its outer edges by individual V-shaped LED segments within the lighting units. Audi Centre Bahrain told us that this impressive double reversing light and indicator function is a first for the brand. Overall, we found the sculptural design of the exterior to epitomise both power and performance, while combining the sportiness of a high-performance vehicle with the everyday usability of a four-door family car.

Gorgeous Interior As we entered the vehicle, we were taken by the immaculate composition of the cockpit and overall cabin area, along with the abundance of natural light provided by the panoramic glass sunroof. The sportiness exuded by the car’s exterior continued inside, albeit combined with a sense of exclusivity and ultimate comfort. We were impressed by the comfy yet supportive nature of the 14-way power-adjustable front sport seats, with integrated head restraints and shaped seat side bolsters – providing excellent lateral support for sporty driving. One of our favourite interior features was the elegant, driverorientated instrument panel with ‘monoposto character’ (a characteristic arched element) taken straight out of the R8 supercar. Yet another superbly designed element was the flat-bottomed, 46

fact magazine

multi-functional Plus steering wheel, featuring shift paddles and electromechanical power-steering. The wheel felt perfect in hand and further urged us to get the car’s wheels spinning on the tarmac. Adding to the day-to-day practicality of the vehicle are the two luggage compartments that provide 85 litres of storage at the front and 405 litres at the back – a capacity considerably increased with the rear seating folded flat.

High-end Tech & Infotainment Audi have long been amongst the front runners for in-car tech, a fact that is showcased in the new e-Tron GT. The visually stimulating infotainment system housed in the new e-Tron may not be the most touch-orientated ever presented in an Audi model; however, it does contain an abundance of indemand content and assists with navigation and communication, providing a wide range of important performance information. We accessed this user-friendly system through the 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, which we operated through steering-wheel-mounted controls and via voice-recognition software. Our additional must-mention tech features include the effective three-zone climate control system, the subscription-based wi-fi hotspot, the optional wireless charging and the superb standard Audi sound system.

Surprising Power & Performance Despite the fact that electronic cars have often proven themselves as capable as their fuel-powered counterparts in terms of onroad or on-track performance, we were still pleasantly surprised when putting the new e-Tron GT through its paces. This latest model from Audi packs a pair of potent electric motors that work together to create an electronic variant of the brand’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. This not only provides exceptional on-road handling – especially when combined with the adaptive three-chamber air suspension and an electronic differential lock on the rear axle – but also delivers a whole lot of power.

The new e-Tron GT features exhilarating launch control and produces 530hp, along with an insane amount of acceleration. As we applied pressure to the right foot pedal, we were instantly pressed hard against our seating, immediately grateful for the support provided. With ear-to-ear smiles delivered in part by the exhilarating experience and in part by the g-forces, we surged from 0-100km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds! Fortunately, the firstclass braking system and overall sublime handling of the car always kept us in complete control of the driving experience. Although electronic vehicles are generally known as quiet rides, Audi has composed a unique soundtrack for the e-Tron GT that we found both powerful and progressive. These sounds emanate from speakers integrated within the vehicle’s architecture and change according to the driving behaviour – another automotive first from this trailblazing brand. Audi have also included a full suite of state-of-the-art driver assistance and safety features to ensure the well-being of both driver and passengers.

Impressive Range and Easy Charging The new e-Tron GT Quattro has a range of up to 488km when fully charged, thanks to its battery, which has a net capacity of 93kWh – a range similar to a full tank on many fuel-powered vehicles. Recharging this GT isn’t a hassle, with a typical charge of 5% to 80% taking an average of 22.5 minutes on a high-powered charging (HPC) column. If in a hurry, a mere five-minute charge will deliver a 100km range. ✤ GO: CALL AUDI CENTRE BAHRAIN ON 1745 9933 FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO BOOK AN ELECTRIFYING TEST DRIVE OF YOUR OWN. 48

CUSTOMISED LUXURY VEHICLES Genesis announced its vision for the region with its personalisation and performance projects at the stunning Distinctly Yours event.

Demonstrating the brand’s strong commitment to delivering a hyper-personalised and luxury experience, under the creative vision of COO Luc Donckerwolke, two ‘One of One’ cars marked the first public showcase of Genesis’ bespoke programme. Three performance-based projects were also featured: the GV80 Coupe Concept, G80 Performance and X Gran Berlinetta Concept. The One of One name originates from the art scene, in which pieces and collectibles are numbered to signify single, unique editions. Genesis applies the same concept, making each One of One car an original piece as well as offering hyper-personalised service beyond the vehicle. The first reveal was the brand’s initial One of One model, designed to demonstrate the programme’s scope. A G90 long wheelbase with a two-tone exterior body in black and white, the car comes in a pearlescent paint finish that provides a unique sheen. Meanwhile, its deep black paint coating features red metallic flakes to subtly match the red hue of the interior under sunlight. The G90’s numerous interior customisations, such as analog watches built into the rear seats and a cooler holding a crystal carafe and glasses, were made based on both design and function to set it apart from the standard Genesis lineup. The second car revealed was the GV80 Twilight Special Edition by Genesis One of One, the first special edition introduced by the bespoke programme. Drawing inspiration from the hues and textures of Middle Eastern deserts, the term ‘Twilight’ symbolises the convergence of two lights – as the sun sets and the moon rises – similar to the meeting of two cultures, the Middle East and Korea. 52

fact magazine

The GV80 Twilight Special Edition by Genesis One of One was created exclusively for the Middle East region and will be limited to 20 cars. Donckerwolke then switched gears to the three performancebased projects – all marked with ‘Designed by Genesis’ to signify the brand’s pride in introducing its high-performance vision. At the launch of the lifestyle-oriented GV80 Coupe Concept in April Donckerwolke promised to “inject more adrenaline and fun into the brand”. Referencing this promise, he presented the G80 Performance for the first time, describing it as “the thoroughbred of the G80 family” with everything from the design to the aerodynamics and suspension modified to enhance the athletic component. The G80 Performance will be a limited series of up to 20 and will be available in the Middle East with various options for personalisation. The final reveal of the evening was the X Gran Berlinetta Concept which was created as part of Polyphony Digital’s Vision Gran Turismo series and will be available to race in the game starting this month. On the unveiling of the three cars, Donckerwolke stated: “We wanted to showcase our commitment to delivering a driving experience that is both emotionally charged and dynamically vibrant. These cars embody the perfect synergy of performance and passion, providing a glimpse into the exciting direction that Genesis is exploring.” ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.GENESIS.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

…In Conversation with Sunuj Deen

Growing up on the island, working with The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa and a childhood hobby that’s still a passion – Sunuj Deen, Director Of Food And Beverage (F&B), talks about all this and more.

Gulf Hotel Bahrain has arguably the highest number of restaurant offerings on the island. What major developments can we expect this year? Rightly said, The Gulf Hotel offers a little something for all food lovers especially with the range of cuisines on offer so literally, it’s a ‘lot on the plate’ being the Director of Food and Beverage. It is indeed exciting times for the hotel with a new leadership and management and there are a few updates that 62

will be revealed soon. Having said that, one thing I can state for sure is that the F&B and Culinary team are working on developing our menus further to exceed diners’ expectations. We are also working towards enhancing our touch points and making the whole dining experience a more interactive one. The outdoor catering offerings are another area we are upgrading further by moving towards a bespoke menu to suit smaller gatherings.

Did you always know that you wanted to get into hospitality? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field? Yes, I studied marketing in high school but I was very clear about entering the hospitality industry. It has always excited me and, being an extrovert by nature, I considered it would be a fitting career for me. However, I never realised the sacrifices one has to make in terms of personal and family life once you are engaged with the sector. I am highly grateful to my family and friends for understanding my passion for this industry and supporting me to succeed. The fact is also that, once you dive deep into the world of hospitality or the service industry in general, you will start enjoying it no matter what. I learned very early from one of my mentors to “Do what you love, and you’ll never work another day” and that is the trick. The island has a thriving F&B industry with a wide range of offerings. What, in your opinion, sets The Gulf Hotel apart? I grew up in Bahrain from the age of seven. Since my childhood, The Gulf Hotel was regarded as a focal point of Bahrain’s food scene and it continues to be so, both, in terms of the inventory of outlets and as a venue for events. I would consider the variety the hotel offers in terms of cuisines, all helmed by chefs originating from those particular regions, along with our lounges and bars are what truly set us apart. It is also great to note that Bahrain as a whole is evolving in the F&B scene, and healthy competition with newer concepts entering the market is always something that pushes everyone to do better.

As a third culture kid, raised in the Kingdom, how has the local culture shaped your personality – as an individual and a professional? Bahrain has always been welcoming to everyone and the Kingdom’s leadership has ensured it stays that way. I believe what has influenced me the most is the local food and simplicity of the people as well as their hospitality. I love travelling and have covered more than 32 countries but I always love coming back home to Bahrain. Bahraini cuisine is simply fantastic and I still fancy a meal in a local tikka shop or a good Bahraini breakfast because it is served with a lot of pride and passion. Personally, the country gave me a great childhood and helped me develop culturally as an individual. Professionally, working in Bahrain and particularly with The Gulf Hotel has given me access to a rewarding career in hospitality, an opportunity to meet the who’s who of the island and, most importantly, lead a great team who I also learn from each day. Not many know that you have had a talent for dance since your school days. Do you still follow this passion and how? Hahaha, I remember reading somewhere ‘Dance is a little insanity that does us all good’! Dancing has always been a passion and I still try to dance whenever I get an opportunity because it makes me happy. I usually don’t have a chance to perform as much as I used to during my school days but I never shy away when an opportunity comes by. I am usually the first one on the list for the hotel’s staff parties and family gatherings. I also try to keep upto-date with the latest trends in the dance and music world. As a hobby, I find time to pursue my photography as well. ✤ fact magazine

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

PROUDLY BAHRAINI... WITH A TWIST Roaya Saleh of Villa Mamas, Fact’s inaugural Chef of The Year, tells us how it started and how it’s going.

66

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

You’ve said you are a self-taught cook, did you learn in your family kitchen? How do you come up with the ideas for your recipes? I was raised in a dual nationality household, my dad Bahraini and mum from Shiraz. My mother’s family were farmers and through her, I learned to grow and harvest, while spending summer holidays at my family farm. I started cooking at a really young age, I used to watch as my relatives prepared meals with whatever was harvested. Gradually, I built off that experience and began developing my own recipes inspired by those very traditional dishes I cooked with my family and began experimenting with international cuisines as I travelled. Travelling allowed me to get a taste of the different flavours from around the world. I learnt about herbs and spices and how to incorporate them to create unique flavours. What three things – either ingredients or tools – do you always have in all your kitchens? Rosemary sea salt that I make myself. Using sea salt from the shores of Bahrain and rosemary that I grow in my garden. Also, my cutting board and knives. When you launched Villa Mamas, in 2012, Bahraini food was hard, if not impossible, to find on the dining scene here in its home country. What inspired you, a former banker, to take a leap into the unknown and how was that first year? I had a sincere desire to offer the true Bahraini hospitality experience to the Western community living on the island and to visitors to the country. At that time, no restaurant offered a high-

end casual dining experience with Bahraini cuisine on the menu. The decision was made to share this cuisine and it came from a heartfelt belief in what we have to offer. It was an instant success! You now have restaurants across the Gulf and also in London. Please tell us about your expansion – particularly London, that one must have been a hard nut to crack? Opening a London outlet was in the plans from the very first day of operations in Bahrain! My plan was to introduce the delicious, untapped Bahraini cuisine to the West. I Worked hard to achieve this goal and I was able to in 2017. Prior to establishing my business in London, I did a five-day pop up in Mayfair. Guests arrived from all over the UK to experience Bahraini food! It was so successful that my team and I had to make the decision to close earlier than planned as we ran out of supplies! Villa Mamas London is now ranked among the best restaurants offering Modern Middle Eastern cuisine in London. What is your signature dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular? I have plenty of signature dishes! If I had to choose one, it would be Tahchin Chicken. Originally a Farsi upside down rice cake, I’ve played with the ingredients to make it more of a fusion between Farsi and Bahraini flavours. So, the name stayed Farsi but it is infused with Bahraini elements at the core. You’ll find this Bahraini influence with ‘Chef Roaya’s twist’ in all my dishes. ✤ fact magazine

he gradual descent of temperatures and the spirited atmosphere around the Kingdom during these months serve as the perfect encouragement to get out more. With that in mind and in the mood for something special, my dining partners and I made our way to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. This luxurious, serene beachfront property boasts some of the island’s finest dining options, and among them is their premier steakhouse – Plums. Stepping eagerly through the door, we were instantly immersed in the alluring and moody atmosphere exuding from every inch of the opulent establishment. The stylish interior is punctuated by dim lighting, contemporary art and comfortable seating upholstered in plush velvet. The impressive décor was matched by the warm greetings from the staff as we took our seats. We were soon joined by the restaurant manager, who enthusiastically spoke of the intriguing menu and told us about new dishes that have been recently added. Kicking off our culinary journey was a splendid plate of Caesar Salad. Prepared in-house, the luscious Caesar dressing comprising egg yolk, parmesan, anchovies and lemon juice was impeccably done. It came together creating a creamy, tangy, umami-rich sauce that served as the ideal accompaniment to the crisp, fresh baby gem lettuce and thinly sliced crunchy croutons. Off the bat, we found ourselves pleasantly surprised by the elevated interpretation of this classic. Next to arrive at our table was one of the new dishes, Foie Gras A Must. A visual treat to behold, the various elements were beautifully presented. The sublime pan-seared foie gras’ buttery, rich and delicate meaty flavour paired excellently with the corn puree and potato pavé. It was topped with a balsamic emulsion with duck fat that brought a deep and cutting flavour to every bite. Scallops rounded off the trio of starters. Firm, sweet and succulent 70

like briny candy, the delicious molluscs were lightly seared and placed on a bed of smooth green pea velouté infused with truffle oil and pieces of beef bacon. The addition of perfectly fried, crushed purple potatoes brought a satisfying crunch and served as a fitting counterpart. As we finalised our selections for the main course, a round of refreshing citrusy concoctions combining lemons, peaches and orange juice graced our table and provided a much-needed zing to our palates. Having worked up more of an appetite during our brief intermission, we returned ready to indulge in the next course. The first of the mains was the mouth-watering serving of Cornfed Organic Half Chicken. The deboned meat was first sous vide and then immaculately finished on a pan with thyme, the wonderfully fragrant preparation painstakingly ensured every bite was extremely tender and juicy. Next up was the delightful Bahrain Hammour, which was a collective favourite at the table, sourced locally and prepared delicately to further accentuate its mild but flavourful profile. The firm, moist and flaky texture of the fish paired nicely with the accompaniment of squash puree, roasted garlic, tomatoes and beautifully cooked, al dente asparagus spears – specially prepared as the fresh seasonal option and served with all our main dishes. But the pièce de resistance of the night was the exceptional steak, our final main course. A 500-day, grain-fed Australian Wagyu Ribeye with a marbling score of over nine – it is considered among the highest grades of quality meat due to its extraordinary amounts of marbling. Grilled to medium-rare perfection and topped with savoury truffle butter, every intensely flavourful bite melted in the mouth!

As we were finishing our fantastic meal, we were visited by Plums' Chef De Cuisine, Kaustubh Chavan. We thoroughly expressed our appreciation for the wonderful meal we had enjoyed. Affable and courteous, he expressed his pleasure at being able to cook for us and filled us in on the changes and additions to the menu, emphasising the use of quality produce and the team’s dedication to sourcing the best ingredients both from across the globe and locally. Before leaving, he also encouraged us to try the desserts menu and gave us his recommendations. Not ones to require much persuasion when it comes to satisfying our sweet tooth, we soon made our picks from the tempting selection. The Chocolate Tonka Coulant unveiled a velvety, rich chocolate cake that was filled with even more indulgent chocolatey goodness, combined with a spectacular vanilla ice cream – every bite had us deeply satisfied. Next was the Classic Baba, a subtly sweet sponge cake that was doused in a tangy orange sauce and topped with a toothsome mascarpone Chantilly cream. Bringing our wonderful experience to an end was the Crème Brûlée Cheesecake. A personal favourite of the night, the contrasting textures of the silky cheesecake and the subtle crunch of the brûlée proved a delightful indulgence in combination with Chantilly cream, fresh berries and a decadent vanilla sauce. If an elegant setting, exceptional food and excellent hospitality are what you desire, Plums is among the few restaurants on the island that effortlessly provides all three, and then some! ✤

rom the surroundings at Salero, you’d never guess you’re literally minutes from Bahrain’s largest retail mall. The lighting is subdued but the space is still bright thanks to ebullient murals adoring the walls in a riot of colour. At the entrance, the familiar mosaic bull, which has welcomed visitors since the venue opened, has been replaced with giant blue abstract-style bull’s head wall paintings – I’m rather taken with the new arrivals. Inside, the seating is comfortable, the staff welcoming and knowledgeable and, as always, I am entranced by the open kitchen where Chef Ruben Torres labours to prepare the feast to come. It’s worth noting that Salero is a tapas bodega, so it’s customary to order a selection of small dishes – perfect for tasting and getting to know this intriguing cuisine. To start we are served warm toasted bread, perfectly nutty and crunchy with finely chopped tomatoes and roasted garlic. Yes, I know bread on the table is customary but these thoughtful accompaniments add a touch of rustic flair that heralds an evening of traditional Spanish hospitality that’s second to none. To start, I choose Gazpacho de Tomate Andalûz – chilled tomato soup served with little pots of cucumber, onion and pepper. To say this is creamy would be a vast understatement. Chef Ruben later tells us that for each 2kg of vegetables, he uses 400ml of olive oil, so there’s no surprise that it’s super rich and thoroughly satisfying. My dining companion goes for Ensalada Ronda con queso de cabra – a goat cheese salad teeming with fruit, nuts, honey and sherry vinaigrette. The fruits offer a zesty contrast to the caramelised cheese and the sweetness of the honey while the greens are superbly fresh providing another crunchy, textural layer to a dish that is already rich in contrasts. For me, no visit to a Spanish restaurant would be complete without Patatas Bravas – traditional fried potatoes with spicy, sweet paprika sauce and aioli. The Salero version arrives sizzling hot and invitingly bright with a fragrant, peppery aroma. We tuck in and the starchy root is every bit as good as I hoped, a glorious marriage of yielding pulpy potato with high-quality olive oil layered with the delicate heat of the spice and the buttery aftertaste of garlic. Soon comes the dish I have been waiting for – Berenjenas a la Miel de Caña. Now, I must confess, I am slightly addicted to aubergine [eggplant], so, if it’s on the menu, it’s definitely going to be on my plate. Fried eggplant slices in super crunchy batter sprinkled with cane honey, it definitely does not disappoint and both of us fall silent in what can only be described as reverent consumption. The combination of textures is a surefire winner. The batter truly crispy, so much so that there is an audible crunch as I bite down, yielding to the soft velveteen eggplant all perfectly offset by the sweetness of the honey. Our server tells us this is not one of Salero’s most popular dishes. All I can say is try it, you will be a convert! Choco Frito a la Mediterránea – fried cuttlefish with lemon and mint aioli – is another triumph. The meat is tender, with not the slightest hint of toughness so common in this dish. And, though trying to save space, both I and my dining companion keep dipping in, thanks in part to the delicious homemade lemon and mint sauce that perfectly draws out the subtle creaminess of the mollusc. My friend’s sautéed chicken with garlic olive oil, lemon and roast 74

potatoes is so good that I’m in serious danger of getting my hand slapped as I home in for a taste – all in the interests of necessary research, of course. Super tender with the infusion of the garlic and lemon, it literally melts on the tongue. Simply sublime. And my Gambas al pilpil Andaluz is equally impressive. Sauteed shrimps Andalusian stye with spicy Spanish paprika and garlic. Perfectly cooked and wonderfully fresh, the seafood is drenched in warm olive oil, the firm flesh absorbing the spicy, peppery goodness of the paprika for a deeply satisfying mouth sensation that sets my taste buds dancing. We are almost done but Chef Ruben, who’s come to chat explaining the culinary intricacies of his Spanish homeland, recommends two ‘must try’ desserts. And who are we to refuse? Our favourite is the Arroz con Leche Español del Sigio XXI which basically translates as 21st century rice pudding but with some seriously delicious twists. There is the expected cinnamon and it is deliciously creamy but there the resemblance to traditional rice pudding ends. With a subtle hint of citrus and a burnt sugar glaze, similar to that found atop crème brûlée, there is a satisfying crack to access the delicious, gooey creaminess beneath. And, to add a fun element, the base of the dish is stacked with puffed rice, adding a textural surprise and a slight earthiness. OK, I’m sold. Throughout the evening, a Spanish guitarist plays alongside a traditional Flamenco dancer and their performance is an unexpected treat that elevates our whole experience to the next level, leaving us slightly in awe at the range of talent just waiting to be discovered on our little island. ✤

estled in the corner of The Art Hotel & Resort and overlooking the stunning blue waters of the Gulf is the hotel’s well-known Mediterranean-inspired restaurant – WU. As my dining partners and I made our way to the restaurant, we passed the property’s phenomenal private beach area that, on that particular afternoon, was quite lively and buzzing with guests making the most of the pleasant weather – a lovely reminder that the worst of the heat is finally behind us! On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staff and shown to our table. The restaurant’s décor elegantly showcases a modern and stylish aesthetic that’s quick to grab your eye. It features a wonderfully snazzy lounge spot on entry and a separate massive dining area that exudes an inviting atmosphere perfect for intimate dinners or gatherings with friends and family. Furthermore, WU also boasts an amazing outdoor space with a cosy charm and plenty of comfortable seating. Once seated, we were soon visited by Executive Chef Jeevan Singh. Friendly and extremely passionate in approach, he enthusiastically took us through the menu, gauging our preferences and helping us figure out our culinary journey for the afternoon. We kicked off the meal with a delicious dish called the Tiara of Salmon and Avocado. Finely diced fresh salmon flawlessly combined with lots of lemon, onion and chives lay perfectly stacked on a circular base of a flavourful avocado salad. This was topped with a flour and butter preparation delicately fashioned in a crown shape, which was further adorned with salmon roe as if to bejewel it. The vibrant freshness of the salmon, along with rich and creamy avocados and the briny, salty taste of roe, formed a pleasing and decadent bite that we couldn’t get enough of, and the plate was swiftly wiped clean! Next came the Pan-fried Foie Gras with an apricot chutney accompaniment, served on a toasted French brioche. With a buttery, rich and delicately meaty flavour, the foie gras had a velvety smooth texture that blended perfectly with the tangy, sweet-sour chutney. Dressed with a balsamic reduction and thin slices of fig, the dish was as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palate. Arriving next at the table, and not a moment too soon, was our round of delightfully citrusy and colourful drinks. The refreshing lemon mint cooler, a delicious passion fruit concoction and another strawberry and basil mix offered a harmonious symphony of flavours that helped further enliven our mood. Luscious, creamy and prepared in a smooth tomato-based broth, a deeply flavourful bowl of Lobster Bisque was the final of the appetisers. The dish included a steamed dumpling filled with succulent lobster meat that was undeniably tempting and left us wanting more. Soon realising we hadn’t sufficiently satisfied our lobster craving and not ones to skip making the most of WU’s stacked menu, we gladly ordered the Grilled Omani Lobster, as our first main course. Cut lengthwise and grilled to delectable, tender perfection using only the help of butter, salt and pepper, we joyfully savoured every juicy bite! We followed that up with a crusted hamour fillet that was nothing short of spectacular. Oven-baked with the exterior only slightly seared and maintaining the inner flesh adequately moist and flaky, it came topped with a special parmesan crust. It was 78

placed on a bed of baked baby potatoes, cherry tomatoes, highly flavoursome Kalamata olives and surrounded with a mouth-watering serving of lemon butter sauce and herb oil. The satisfying contrast of textures here made this dish a true standout. The final main course of Roasted Duck Breast and Foie Gras was a carnivore’s dream. The impeccably prepared duck had a rich, complex and gamey flavour, making it much more tasty than other poultry when cooked correctly, which it was here. Served with a variety of veggies, it also came with a special Medjool date and potato puree sauce. Chef Jeevan highlighted that his concept is to incorporate local ingredients and find different ways of utilising them to elevate the various dishes at the restaurant, and with this particular item, they hit it out of the park. Aromatic with layers of flavour, the sauce helped further accentuate the taste of the duck breast, and the generous serving of foie gras elevated the profile of the dish. Rounding off our sumptuous meal, we decided to try a few desserts, but instead of finishing them at our table, we opted to move and take a seat outside. The crisp, cool breeze and the beautiful view of the beach and sea immediately made us regret not coming out sooner. From the dessert menu, we tried the Banoffee Pie, which we loved. The biscuit base was sweet and crumbly, while the filling was a delicious mix of bananas and caramel covered in a generous blanket of whipped cream, amounting to a blend of irresistible flavours. Next, we had the Pistachio and Peanut Parfait, which combined the best of flavours from both the nuts into a sweet treat that afforded a satisfying sensory experience and left us with a smile.

We concluded our culinary journey with some much-needed coffee as we chose to stay a while longer and continue our conversations taking in the picturesque views. Overall, from the pleasing food to the attentive and friendly staff along with the inviting ambience (a special mention once again to the outdoor seating area), everything about WU Restaurant & Lounge really left us impressed and willing to make the drive out to Amwaj whenever the opportunity next arises. ✤

ETHICAL EXPERIENCES

Since we’re celebrating Veganuary, with its ethos of doing no harm to the animal kingdom, we decided to look at ethical animal experiences for travellers.

rom meeting elephants to feeding tiger cubs, there are numerous ways to get up close and personal with the local wildlife pretty much anywhere you go. But, though many of them may seem to be legitimate, it’s worth remembering that anything offering you the chance to interact with what should be a wild animal will, almost certainly, go against that creature’s natural instincts. And anything that involves an animal performing in any way for public entertainment, from dancing bears to aquarium acts, definitely doesn’t fall into the ethical animal encounter bracket. In some cases, rescue and rehabilitation centres may allow limited contact but, if you like your wild animals, well, wild, then it’s best to stay away from all but the very best. Look for options such as those included here or take a trip where you simply watch from a respectful distance.

The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Nairobi, Kenya As one of Africa’s oldest wildlife charities and a leading conservation organisation, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) embraces all measures that complement the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife. The trust has been rescuing elephants, and a few other species, for more than 45 years and a visit to the orphanage on

the outskirts of Nairobi is a truly magical experience. Africa’s elephant population is under ever increasing pressure from both development and, more so, poaching, which means there is never any shortage of babies needing help. At the orphanage, the youngsters, who can sometimes be just a few weeks old, are looked after by a team of carers who eventually prepare them for life back in the wild. The trust has sites across Kenya, where the growing elephants undergo staged release once they are old enough (usually around three or four years), sleeping in stockades and getting used to life in the bush during the day. You can visit the orphanage but, as mentioned above, you won’t be able to touch or cuddle the baby ellies. However, you can witness them coming in from their daily bushwalks with their carers and greedily gobbling down special milk formula from their bottles. If you’re very lucky, you might even get the chance to meet some of the long-stay residents who are not candidates for release. Some while ago, we encountered a grown adult rhino who, being blind, will live out his life at the orphanage and likes nothing better than to have his head scratched. You can also sponsor Sheldrick elephants and supporters do get the chance to visit the centre outside public hours. GO: VISIT SHELDRICKWILDLIFETRUST.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

Whale Watching, The Azores Not only are the islands of The Azores an amazing place to visit – wild, beautiful, quite off the beaten track and a bit of a trek to get to. They’re also on the North Atlantic whale migratory route and the waters surrounding the islands are absolutely teeming with incredible marine life. We had been planning to feature swimming with wild dolphins through a company called Azores Adventures Futurismo (AAF) since we liked their overall ethical stance. However, when we got in touch for more information, they informed us that they’ve become concerned about the lack of reliable research into whether human contact with wild dolphins really is harmless. Hence, they’ve stopped conducting the activity. Since they’re the experts, we decided to take a look at their whale watching activities instead. Trust us, we’ve been there and whale watching off the Azores is an amazing, one-of-a-kind experience. Not only does AAF provide would-be watchers with loads of good educational and conservation information, the company conducts research and uses non-invasive spotting techniques to locate these giants of the deep. It is also World Cetacean Alliance certified and observes strict rules and protocols to do no harm on the water. And there’s an added bonus. You may also spot dolphins, sharks, manta rays and big fish species. Don’t forget it’s also possible to see dolphins, whales and dugong in our own local waters but make sure you keep your distance and give them the respect they deserve. Gorilla Trekking, Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo Gorilla Trekking, visiting the mountains to see families of endangered animals, certainly raises ethical questions. In fact, the renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, whose life’s work was portrayed in the film Gorillas in the Mist, was very anti wildlife tourism arguing that these magnificent beasts, whose DNA is so close to our own, should be left to their own devices and allowed privacy. However, it cannot be denied that gorillas live in developing nations and this kind of tourism is seen as essential for generating income to protect the primates. Funds raised through permits to access the areas in which they’re found are put back into both employing rangers to combat poaching and investing in local communities providing infrastructure and jobs. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda is home to almost half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas with more than 300 living there. When it was first opened to the public in 1993 there was only one gorilla family in residence. Over the past 30 years, this has grown to 17 families. So, it could certainly be argued that wildlife tourism has been good for the primates. Access to the gorillas is strictly controlled with permits ranging from USD450 in Congo and USD700 in Uganda to USD1,500 in neighbouring Rwanda and travellers must adhere to a tough set of rules, including not visiting if they are even slightly unwell since human germs can be very harmful to our primate cousins. However, with all the above taken into account, as well as the sometimes-strenuous trek needed to reach the gorillas’

habitat, there can be no doubt that this would be a once-ina-lifetime experience that we’d love to try. GO: VISIT VIRUNGAPARKCONGO.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION. If you’d like to know more about ethical animal tourism or check if what you have in mind is truly safe for the creatures you plan to visit, make sure you do extensive research and try to read about others’ experiences. ✤ GO: VISIT WORLDANIMALPROTECTION.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION. tro’s AW 23 women’s collection, Radical, under the direction of Marco De Vincenzo, is borrowed from the Late Latin radicalis, meaning root. And the roots of Etro are in fabric and print: tartans, cravat-inspired motifs and, of course, paisley. All of it comes back this season framed by a new sense of precision, a proclivity for sharp cuts and the rhythm of patterns. Things come together instinctively, as long billowy dresses are paired with droopy, chunky knits, and androgynous trousers and vests are mingled with silk blouses. Tailoring is tall and precise, in opulent fabrications. Necktie motifs swarm on enveloping coats with contrast prints on the inside. Denim pants peek a boo, hinting, indeed, at a radical look. Etro being a whole world, elements of home furnishing are borrowed, with blankets wrapped on light dresses. Fringes dance along the hem of chunky polos and scarves, while applique gives argyle knit a three-dimensional charm. Accessories are just as radical: the Aladdin clogs become boots, while polished Mary Janes have thick heels and a platform. Oversized laser-cut totes provide a domestic feel and the new Saturno bucket is appropriately and positively moody. For men, the creative path originates in the sense of reassurance offered by a jacquard velvet blanket, cherished by Marco as a child, the pattern of which is reproduced onto broad woollen coats and jackets. Tactility is key, with jacquard and weaving overtaking print. Pieces are put together and assembled to stimulate both sight and touch, with 3D crochet fruit growing on jumpers, Melton

BIG SCREEN Killers Of The Flower Moon Need to Know:

Killers of the Flower Moon is a 2023 epic Western crime drama. Set in 1920s’ Oklahoma, the film depicts the murders of the Osage people and explores a string of brutal crimes, conspiracy, racism and the early days of the FBI.

Director: Martin Scorsese Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily

The improbable romance starts off with genuine love but then devolves into unspeakable levels of betrayal – all in the name of money.”

The Iron Claw Need to Know:

The Iron Claw is a 2023 biographical sports drama film based on the life of professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich and his family.

Director: Sean Durkin Cast: Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Stanley Simons, Holt McCallany, Lily James, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Brady Pierce, Aaron Dean Eisenberg

Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Myers, Jason Isbell

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Based on the 2017 non-fiction book of the same name by David Grann, the events of the movie take place at the turn of the 20th century when the Osage Nation, like many indigenous tribes of North America, were pushed West by white colonists, until finally settling in a rocky area of land that would become the state of Oklahoma. However, when oil was discovered on Osage territory, they became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The plot follows the turmoil that occurs when the wealth of these Native Americans attracts nefarious outsiders who devise ways to steal the tribe’s money. They manipulate, extort and swindle as much Osage money as they can before completely giving in to their greed and resorting to murder. The improbable romance between Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Gladstone) is highlighted as it starts off with genuine love but then devolves into unspeakable levels of betrayal – all in the name of money. Scorsese masterfully crafts this historical drama and sharply spotlights the evil and injustice operating in plain sight during this period.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The film is based on true events centred around the Von Erich family, a dynasty of professional wrestlers from Texas, USA, that had great success in the early 1980s and were well known for popularising the ‘iron claw’ professional wrestling hold. The plot follows the trials and tribulations faced by the Von Erich brothers on their road to success inside the ring, but also highlights the string of unbearable personal misfortunes and tragedies faced by them outside of it, which came to be known as the ‘Von Erich curse’. On the one hand their mother tried to protect them by instilling a strong sense of faith in them. While on the other, a domineering father and coach with sky-high expectations and demanding standards, harshly trained them to be the toughest and strongest, so nothing could ever hurt them. The movie emphatically depicts the pressures and difficulties the brothers faced to meet those expectations, especially in an era and industry where any male vulnerability was seen as weakness. The performances and intense storyline effectively present a cautionary tale about parental influence, sibling rivalry and the various dangers of the professional wrestling business.

Before And After By Neil Young

What Them Dogs Don’t Know They Know By G’s Us

Before and After is the 45th studio album by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Neil Young. Comprising 13 tracks, it features fresh solo acoustic takes on some of Young's lesser-known works pulled from his distinguished vault. Presented in a stripped-down but nevertheless sincere manner, a consistent hallmark of Young’s style, the album effectively presents his impassioned vocals over unfaltering guitar chords and his salient harmonica playing. The opening track I’m the Ocean, originally recorded in 1995 with Pearl Jam on Mirror Ball, is rivetingly reworked and immediately sets the mood. There’s an entrancing fragility in 78-year-old Young’s voice with all of its ageing, aching beauty spotlighted front and centre on tracks like A Dream Can Last, Birds and My Heart that’s suitably accompanied with delicate piano playing. When I Hold You In My Arms is a another favourite on the album. In a statement on release Young revealed that: “The feeling is captured, not in pieces, but as a whole piece — designed to be listened to that way. This music presentation defies shuffling, digital organisation, separation. Only for listening. That says it all.” And we wholeheartedly implore you to take his word for it.

Underground rap favourites R.A.P. Ferreira and AJ Suede unite as G’s Us to release their inaugural full-length album – What Them Dogs Don’t Know They Know. Elite with their penmanship, there isn’t any mumbling, stuttering or second guessing on this lean 27-minute project. Summoning the lost art of the rap duo, G’s Us come together to trade bars and present a celebration of lyrical dexterity that allows listeners to revel in the sheer joy of language. Complemented by Steel Tipped Dove’s immaculately brooding production, the duo make the most of abstract noir sounds with the gloomy piano and wind instrument samples that are effortlessly arranged with booming off-beat drums and menacing bass lines. The duo kick things into motion effortlessly on smooth opener Universe. Followed up with the standout Freaks featuring Blu, the lyrics blunt and hardhitting are drenched in foreboding, spacey beats with jazzy elements sprinkled throughout. The sultry drums and horns on Skin Glowing jump out while the hypnotising wordplay stays sharp as ever. Airtight, intimidating and beautifully crafted, the project showcases R.A.P. Ferreira and AJ Suede excellently complementing each other’s light and shadow.

By Alex Michaelides Told through narrator Elliot Chase, this takes the form of a ‘trapped on an island’ story, several of which have popped up in recent years. But, of course, coming from the pen of Alex Michaelides, we can expect a thrilling treat. We join a group of friends, invited by reclusive former movie star Lana Farrar, on an idyllic Greek escape during which twists and turns, revenge and hatred culminate in violence and murder… or is it?

• MATTER OF FACT

What We’re (Still) Talking About It’s A Record

Bitter Irony

Bad Visitors

A long time ago, probably before many but the most dedicated muso cares to remember, records came on vinyl. If you were lucky, you had a multi-record player that dropped 45 after 45 – that’s RPM for the babies in the audience. But vinyl was a bit of a pain, records got scratched and needles (yes, they were needed to play these discs of sound) wore out.

There was a huge outpouring of grief at the death of Irish singer-songwriter Shane McGowan, who went to the great bar in the sky just short of his 65th birthday. Across the world and across social media, friends, fans and fellow musicians paid tribute to the great man with renditions of his songs – some good, some not so much. One of the most popular was his twisted Christmas carol Fairytale of New

Here in the Middle East, we love visitors. Our governments have many plans for bringing the world to our shores and sharing wonderful Arabic hospitality. But, at this time of year, it’s always fun to take a look at what some not-so-bright tourists have been up to across the world over the past 12 months. For instance, and Italy does seem to attract more than its fair share,

So, we welcomed the revolution that was the cassette tape. Long the privilege of the professional recording studio, now these little marvels were mass produced and we eagerly (and illegally) taped songs from the radio, battling to hit the record and stop buttons before the DJ chimed in. Soon came the compact disc (CD), quickly followed and replaced by the MP3 and other streaming options. But now, it seems, we’ve come full circle with vinyl sales in the UK at their highest since 1990. Looks like the kids are finally learning about quality sound. We just have to wait for the music to catch up.

York. People couldn’t get enough of the lyrics, even the one line that came in for a great deal of politically correct flack a couple of years ago – so much so that there’s even a ‘non-offensive’ version to download. It seemed all was forgiven and there was a campaign to get the ‘best Christmas song in the history of the world’ to number one in the charts for the festive season. Downloads were downloaded, radio stations and online musical channels played it, and it seemed McGowan’s death might just accomplish that accolade which had eluded him in life. But, alas, it was not to be. It was pipped at the post by Wham!’s Last Christmas. Somewhere in the ether, another late rocker, George Michael is smiling.

in January an American was fined for driving over Florence’s pedestrianised Ponte Vecchio bridge. A few months later, in Austria, locals got so fed up with people stopping to take selfies at a view that supposedly inspired Disney’s Frozen, that they built a fence in front of it. Meanwhile, back in Italy, more selfie enthusiasts caused a gondola to capsize in Venice when they refused to sit down and stop their snapping and one young Brit found himself in deep trouble after scrawling graffiti on Rome’s 2000-yearold Colosseum. This one was even dumb enough to tag his own name! All we can say is, if you’re travelling in 2024, make sure you behave and don’t end up on the naughty list.
