We're here, it's that time of year, we've made it! Every year has its own rhythm of work, family, deadlines, early mornings, late nights, and managing the juggle. Yet somehow, when we reach this point, there is a real sense of gratitude we start to feel above everything else. The pace slows, the noise softens, and we get a chance to lift our heads and appreciate what the year has given us.
This year threw its usual mix at us: hard days and brilliant ones. I look at friends, colleagues, and the people in our community, and we have all had battles to fight. Yet every single one of us has also pocketed moments that made us laugh until we cried, swell with pride, or simply breathe deeper. That is what a year does, isn’t it? It stretches us, then reminds us how strong we are when we stand together.
And standing together is what our communities do. This stretch of coastline has a magic way of connecting its people, locally and no matter how far they wander. I still grin when I hear of Umhlanga folk finding each other sipping cocktails in Cape Town or on the London tube, instant friends because they both grew up in the area. That thread runs through us all as locals, and it always pulls us together, back home.
So as the festive season lands, I hope you’re able to surround yourself with the people who lift you highest. Family around the braai, friends on the promenade, neighbours sharing a drink over fairy lights or sunsets. Smile in the holiday traffic, even on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. Savour every small moment that makes December here feel like magic.
And when you finally get to put your feet up, I hope this edition of The Umhlanga magazine adds to your moments of calm. Our team has worked hard to put together stories that reflect the heart of our community. You will find ideas for gifts, places to explore, food to enjoy, and people whose stories inspire and connect us.
Before I sign off, thank you. Truly. To our team, every reader, advertiser, and supporter who keeps these pages alive, thank you for letting us tell your stories. It remains the greatest privilege.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and God Bless

On 4 June, 1783, in a small French village called Annonay, the first ever Hot Air Balloon went up into the sky. It was set off from a raised platform with a bonfire fuelled by wet straw and old woollen rags, and ascended 2,000 metres into the air. This historic day was the first step in the history of human flight. But when the balloon landed a few miles away in a field, a group of angry peasants hacked it to pieces with pitchforks.
It seems laughable that people would respond in such a manner, but these actions are symptomatic of people who resist progress and do not want things to change.
Progress is a part of life and essential to keep us inspired and motivated. Without a commitment to making progress, we get stuck in life and will fail to break through to the next level. One of the most discouraging places to be is where progress is lacking, whether it be at work, in business, in a marriage, financially, or even in our country. Many South Africans feel constantly frustrated by the lack of progress in our nation. When potholes don’t get repaired, road markings are not painted, sidewalks are left in ruin, and rubbish litters our streets, we are easily discouraged by the lack of progress. And when progress is repeatedly disregarded, it eventually leads to decay.
Progress is not always automatic; it requires us to say “yes” to move forward. When we do, we find that things begin to change for the better. Progress is the great motivator of life, and any area that we make progress in inspires us

to do more and believe for more. American author Daniel Pink said, “A sense of making progress is the greatest motivator of all”.
Making progress is like putting fuel in your car. It allows you to travel further and keep going for longer. It gets you to places in life that would otherwise have been off limits. When we say “yes” to moving forward, we find that God begins to direct our lives towards His good plans. Our sense of purpose is heightened, and our own progress inspires others to believe for their own breakthrough.
It’s important to never hold on too tightly to the past and not allow ourselves to settle and take it easy. In the pursuit of comfort, we can easily get stuck in a rut and miss out on the wonderful future available to us. Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of America, said, “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”
The future is filled with wonderful opportunities for those who keep saying “yes” to progress.
Progress is a part of life and essential to keep us inspired and motivated

Gateway Theatre of Shopping is setting the scene for imagination, sparkle, and connection as it transforms into KwaZulu-Natal’s ultimate festive playground this holiday season. From 12 December 2025 to 7 January 2026, the centre will host a line-up of entertainment that promises to delight visitors of all ages.
The headline attraction this year is the LEGO® Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 performance activation, a firstof-its-kind in South Africa. The high-energy installation that international travellers may have seen in Singapore invites shoppers to design and build their own race cars at dedicated build stations, then put them to the test on a precision-timed ramp with digital leaderboards. A reflex challenge will add to the fun, letting participants measure their reaction times just like professional drivers. Exclusive LEGO® merchandise will also be on sale, adding to the excitement for both collectors and families.
The centrepiece of the installation is a life-size LEGO® Technic Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance
car, the largest LEGO® build ever brought to South Africa. Crafted from 192,937 LEGO® bricks, the model measures an impressive 5.1 metres in length and 2.2 metres in width, weighing over 900 kilograms. Its sleek aerodynamic design and meticulous details mirror the precision and craftsmanship of the real F1 car.
On 13 and 14 December, Gateway will host the Unity Battle Fest, an exciting dance competition taking place in the Atrium (near Entrance 5, Parkade B Ground Floor. Open to dancers of all levels, the festival celebrates movement, creativity and community. New to this year’s line-up is a professional development division offering free workshops for disadvantaged and disabled dancers, underscoring the event’s inclusive spirit. This event will see Durban’s most talented dancers go head-to-head across a range of genres and styles, from high-energy street dance to expressive contemporary performances. Entry is free for spectators, and the public is encouraged to come along, cheer on the competitors and enjoy a weekend of home-grown talent. Spectators can look forward to a weekend packed with live music, top DJs, and standout dance performances.

Gateway continues its long-standing support for Reach for a Dream. Throughout December, the organisation will take over Gateway’s gifting concierge service, wrapping shoppers’ presents in exchange for donations that help fulfil the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses. The partnership continues the success of last year’s campaign, which raised over R350,000, with Gateway aiming to surpass that milestone in 2025.

At the Expo Explore area, shoppers can also visit the enchanting Disney Giant Gift Box installation, which will be on display until 10 January. For a donation of R50, visitors can make a pledge towards Reach for a Dream, with all Disney plush toys from the display later gifted to children in hospitals. Gateway, in collaboration with Cars on Sunday and AutoEmotive, will host a Charity Car Run on Sunday, 7 December, between 9am to 11am. This event will be hosted close to AutoEmotive (in Parkade B, level P2) and will feature 40 to 50 highend cars from across KwaZulu-Natal. Creating an unforgettable spectacle for visitors and car enthusiasts, Reach for a Dream will host 20 children to experience this special morning. Each child will get to choose their favourite supercar and enjoy a dream drive around Gateway together with their families.
The recent refurbishment has brought a refreshed aesthetic to the centre, particularly in the Great Hall and northern areas. The landmark fountain

has been revitalised with six colour-changing lights and programmable sequences, creating a perfect festive photo moment. Shoppers can also look forward to extended trading hours, new store openings, and a host of seasonal experiences, including the live East Coast Radio broadcasts with Danny Guselli on 12 and 19 December.
“Gateway has always been about creating experiences that bring people together, and this festive season, we’re taking that to the next level. Between the excitement of LEGO®, the Unity Battle Fest and the new look of the centre, this will be a truly memorable summer for our visitors. Gateway really is your festive playground,” shares Ayesha Sewbaran, Gateway’s Marketing Manager. gatewayumhlanga Gateway Theatre of Shopping VIP www.gatewayworld.co.za

A celebration of good company and great cuisine, our client lunch at Bardot blended refined flavours, effortless hospitality, and Umhlanga’s sweeping ocean views.

Reflecting on a whirlwind year filled with standout highs and inevitable lows, we gathered a group of our long-standing clients for a threecourse lunch, generously hosted by Bardot Restaurant & Bar. Nestled at the base of The Pearls, this coastal gem knows precisely how to welcome its guests. Bardot treated us from the moment we arrived, with a curated selection of chilled and sparkling wines, fresh juices, and non-alcoholic options awaiting us at the entrance to set the tone and keep conversations flowing.
Our party of 14 enjoyed the St Tropez set menu: a tempting spread of starters, mains, and decadent desserts. With thoughtful options for various dietary needs, the toughest task was simply choosing from their delicacies. Every dish - perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, and portioned just right - exceeded our expectations.
Empty plates and satisfied smiles told the story of a kitchen working at the top of its game. Their French-inspired menu delivers refined, easy-going dining - fresh, seasonal

ingredients artfully made into dishes that feel both elevated and approachable. Paired with a well-considered cocktail and wine list that highlights South African favourites, every element enhances the experience without overshadowing it. We were hosted in the Opera Glass House, a bright, glass-framed space surrounded on three sides by sweeping views.
Accommodating up to 80 guests indoors and 50 guests on the balcony, it’s the ideal setting for events that want Umhlanga itself to be part of the experience. With panoramic scenes of the deep blue ocean, the Whalebone Pier, and the vibrant promenade, the space needs little else in the way of décor. Stacking glass panels offer flexibility for any weather, and by night, the glow of city lights transforms the venue into something even more magical.
For smaller gatherings, Bardot offers The Library - a private dining room suited for up to 20 guests or reconfigured into an intimate lounge for 12. Those needing a more formal setup can opt for the Black Room, a versatile 60-seater dining or

conference space complete with its own patio and private restroom facilities.
Whether it’s a corporate lunch, an intimate celebration, or a milestone event, Bardot’s selection of private spaces and attentive service ensures each gathering feels personal and memorable.
Our client lunch blended refined flavours, effortless hospitality, and Umhlanga’s sweeping ocean views into an afternoon that reminded us why shared meals matter.
Bardot, a shimmering jewel on KwaZuluNatal’s coastline, gracefully incorporates elegance, warmth, and French Riviera charm. Inside, the space feels chic yet relaxed, with sunlit interiors and ocean views that invite long conversations and lingering lunches.

Our thanks and appreciation were sweetened by the wonderful service from the team at Bardot Restaurant & Bar. The day was a testament to the power of good food, good company, and beautiful surroundings.

No time, no problem - here are all the traditional favourites to make your table shine.
WORDS JACQUELINE HERBST
Christmas Day has a way of sneaking up on us. If you’ve suddenly realised you’ve got more guests than game plan, don’t panic, Bluff Meat Supply and Umhlanga Rocks Superspar have everything you need to save the day. From succulent cuts and ready-tocook roasts to vibrant salads and decadent desserts, these classic favourites make it easy to present a Christmas lunch that looks like you planned it weeks in advance. Armed with this festive know-how, all that’s left to do is grab a trolley, turn up the carols, and make this last-minute Christmas lunch one to remember!
This bone-in gammon is the ultimate holiday roast. It is coated in a rich glaze of maple syrup, brown sugar, and Chinese five spices. The final touch is the pineapple rings and the bright red glace cherries, ensuring this main course is both a feast for the eyes and a perfect balance of salty, sweet, and spicy flavours. Since this recipe is robust and sweet enough to stand alone, it doesn't need any additional condiments, glazes, or sauces. This beautiful gammon is, however, best served with a portion of duckfat roasted potatoes. A holiday favourite, it’s crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. When it comes to best plating practise, we suggest drizzling a small amount of the remaining glaze over the sliced meat just before serving or brushing the cut edges lightly.
For a memorable impression, garnish the platter with a few fresh, thinly sliced orange wheels or cinnamon sticks for an aromatic, festive touch.

Another holiday classic, the roast leg of lamb is the perfect dish to make your Christmas lunch special. It’s soft, juicy, and full of flavour. The lamb is slowroasted with garlic, fresh rosemary, fresh thyme, and olive oil, making it tender and tasty with a wonderful smell that fills your kitchen.
Serve it with roast potatoes, mint sauce, and your favourite veggies for a meal your family will love and enjoy.
Before serving the platter at the table, spoon some of the juices from the pan or your mint sauce over the sliced meat to keep it glistening and moist.
Use the leftover lamb for wraps with grated cucumber, sour cream dip, and lettuce, an easy and delicious meal for Boxing Day.

Bluff Meat Supply’s roast chicken is the star of any table. It’s soft and juicy on the inside, with a crispy, golden skin on the outside - the kind of meal that makes everyone smile.
For extra flavour, brush your chicken with butter, garlic, and lemon after roasting. Then serve it with mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and pour on some gravy.
To make serving easier, consider carving the chicken in the kitchen first and then arranging all the pieces on a large platter, making sure the crispy skin is facing up. It's less messy and allows your guests to easily select their preferred cut.
Turn leftover roast chicken into chicken and mayo sandwiches.
www.bluffmeatsupply.co.za
A playful take on a South African favourite. This dessert comes together in minutes by spooning thick whipped cream in a wreath shape, then decorating with macarons, meringues, fresh cherries, strawberries and plum slices. Garnish with sprigs of mint and edible flowers for a show-stopping (but super easy) dessert.

Available exclusively from Umhlanga Rocks Superspar and SPAR Gourmet Zimbali Oasis, this one is the easiest of all, as it requires no assembly at home. That’s right - the Gourmet Slider Platter is part of a range of gourmet, one-of-a-kind platters that sit a step above traditional SPAR platters and can be ordered from these two toptier stores.

These need no introduction. Golden buttery pastry filled with rich, spiced minced fruit, and made in-house - no Christmas feast is complete without them!

This generous platter was assembled using a selection of Dargle Valley Meats, Mezzo breadsticks (seeded or plain), Mediterranean Kitchen dips, a range of preserves, and cheeses. Grapes, broccoli sprouts, flowers, fragrant rosemary sprigs, and delectable strawberries were used for styling. All items are available in store.

The Umhlanga Rocks Superspar stocks the “Build Your Own Gingerbread House” Kits, a fun activity that keeps both kids and adults entertained. No baking required, just the joy of decorating and eating. Each kit includes pre-baked pieces, icing, and sweet decorations for a fuss-free holiday treat.

JACQUELINE HERBST
Neatly tucked between two coastal estuaries, a lush coastal dune forest, and the warm Indian Ocean, the village of Umdloti is celebrated for its unique natural environment. Tasked with preserving it for future generations and focused on place-making, the Umdloti Coastal Conservancy (UCC) is a group of volunteers who, for nearly four decades, have safeguarded the area’s
wealth of biodiversity in collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality, marine scientists, and a dedicated horticulturist.
We recently caught up with the UCC’s Terry Rens, Tracey Simkiss, and Pat Bean for a sunrise cuppa, and their passion for this little piece of paradise was immediately evident. As the sun sprinkled the landscape with gold and the salty smell of the ocean lingered
in the air, they spoke of nearly four decades of hands-on conservation.
Protecting Biodiversity: Mussels, Dunes & Lagoons
Marine scientists tout rock mussels as a key coastal asset in the province. Protection of the mussel beds in Umdloti, initiated in 1998, has led to species such as skates, sea slugs, and starfish reappearing for the first time in years. The Oceanographic Research

Institute (ORI) has continuously monitored these mussels since the 1980s, and their recovery since being officially protected is well documented. Mussel cover at Umdloti now exceeds nearby exploited reefs, and the beds provide mussel spat for reseeding reefs along the KZN coast. Anglers benefit too, as mussel beds increase both the diversity and biomass of fish in the area.
The UCC also led a years-long dune rehabilitation project following massive coastal erosion caused by a gigantic storm swell in 2007.
“Through alien plant removal, replanting indigenous dune vegetation and careful erosion control, the sand slowly returned and much of the natural dune structure was restored,” says Terry.
Next on the Conservancy’s agenda, explains Tracey, are the Umdloti and Umhlanga lagoons flanking the town to the north and south, where urban development, water pollution, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss are having an impact.
A notable success is a series of
information signboards spread along the beachfront. True to UCC ethos and Umdloti’s happy-golucky vibe, the signs share positive messages about conservation, educating the community on how they can help rather than listing ‘don’ts’. Pat has a special affinity for these, wiping them clean of dirt and dust as he goes on his morning walks.
Since the Sibaya Conservation Trust took on the management of the expansive surrounding forests, birdlife has flourished. Meanwhile, a gardener named Louis works four days a week, cleaning beaches, repairing, and tending to gardens in public spaces. Funded entirely by public donations, his work has made a clear difference towards the UCC’s goal of achieving aesthetic uniformity on the town’s north and south sides. All

other UCC projects are funded by the annual Arbor Day event, which draws strong community support, including from residents in the newer Salta and Sibaya developments.
Through efforts such as protecting mussel beds, rehabilitating dunes, and caring for forests, the Umdloti Coastal Conservancy has played a key role in maintaining the village’s natural environment.
With ongoing community involvement and scientific support, the UCC continues to address challenges from development, pollution, and erosion, helping ensure that Umdloti’s estuaries, forests, and coastline remain ecologically healthy and accessible to residents.

Join the FabMags Team as we take on royal politics and court etiquette in a game of Bridgertoninspired Dungeons & Dragons at The Big Bang Shop.

We’re always open to trying new things and testing our teamwork, so we decided to take on a session of Dungeons & Dragons at The Big Bang Shop. If you’re not familiar with the concept, Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop
game where participants can create their characters and go on fictional adventures together. One person, the Dungeon Master, describes the world and what happens in it while the other players decide what their characters do, such as fighting, exploring, or talking.
Everything happens verbally, and dice are rolled to decide if your actions succeed or fail.
Since most of us had only seen or heard of the game and never actually played a campaign, we were eager to see what adventure was in store for us. Zane and his team welcomed us inside, and we all totally geeked out at their displays of figurines and collectables. Next, we were treated to hot beverages from their coffee station, because no quest can start with you being dehydrated. With steaming hot chocolates, chai lattes, and little blue cookies which reminded me of the Blue Milk from Star Wars, we settled down around our table and got comfortable.
The large screen on the wall depicted a cosy scene with a fireplace, and the classical instrumental versions of popular songs playing in the background set the tone. We were playing through a murder mystery set in the Regency Era, inspired by Bridgerton. The Dungeon Master, Pascal, ran us through the basics on how to play as we each chose a D20 (a twenty-sided die) and handed us our character sheets. Normally, you would construct your own characters, with their traits and backstory, but since we were newbies, he gave us pre-made ones.
The sheets contained names with attributes, goals, connections, and secrets, which we had to use to

successfully navigate the narrative. Describing the scene, Pascal led us into the world, vividly explaining our surroundings and objectives, and prompting us to begin interacting with the world and with each other.
We quickly learned to be mindful of the time period, taking into account societal norms and hierarchy. Plans were quickly thwarted by a simple roll of the die; a low number indicated failure, and a higher number ensured success, as we tried to achieve each of our objectives. Secrets were spilled, bonds tested, and plot twists coming from every direction. Reputation points were the system used to gauge how well we navigated the story, and let’s just say some of us were in the negatives. It made for an entertaining way to see how we work together and achieve our own missions.
Seated at other tables, people were playing different games together.

The Big Bang Shop has become a culture centre for modern hobbies. They have created a safe, inclusive, and friendly environment where everyone, from first-time players to seasoned tournament champions, can feel at home. The thriving community built and the milestones achieved are a testament to the impact on pop culture in Durban. From being the first store in Africa invited to the Pokémon Play! Retail Conference in the Netherlands to

Yu-Gi-Oh! Regional Championship Qualifier, and becoming an Official POP MART Retailer, bringing the latest international collectable trends to our doorsteps. It’s difficult to believe it has been just over a year since they opened, with how much they have accomplished. There’s also exciting news about expansions to begin in early 2026! They will introduce a dedicated, extended play area designed to elevate events, comfort, and

year since they opened, with how capacity.
Back at our table, things were heating up as the story drew to a close. Someone was found dead, scandalous secrets were revealed, and some players succeeded in their missions while others were cast out from higher society. A regular campaign can take up to weeks to complete, but with some

guidance from Pascal, we managed to wrap up our journey within a few hours. By the end, we were fully invested in our characters’ fates and eager to explore more. The Big Bang Shop hosts weekly D&D nights and character-building workshops to help newcomers like us get the right start to their journey.
With a little souvenir from the experience, a really cool D20, we
departed to the real world outside of the store. It was a really enjoyable and unique take on how we interacted with each other and the world we were in. It’s safe to say that this game gained a few more fans. Thank you to The Big Bang Shop for giving us this experience!

At 27, Umdloti’s Kei Weyer is the youngest prominent surfboard shaper in Durban and proof that, through good work ethic and a willingness to put in the hours, young South Africans can still create a future for themselves on home soil.
Raised by a family of surfers, Kei’s dad, Gavin, pushed him into his first wave in Umdloti when he was five years old. That first dose of pure stoke would see Kei grow into one

Durban’s youngest surfboard shaper is proving that talent, timing, and hard work can still carve a future on home soil.
of the most versatile surfers - able to ride any board, in any conditions, and always with that trademark steeze, surf-speak for effortless style. Varsity life never appealed to Kei, and he didn’t want to waste his parents’ money on a degree he wasn’t going to use. He knew he wanted to work with his hands and be outdoors, so he chose a different path - one unlocked by a pivotal meeting with Durban surfboardshaping legend, Peter Lawson, founder of Peter Lawson Surfboards.

Kei had just returned from a postmatric gap year programme in the Eastern Cape when Peter invited him to shadow him at his factory in early 2018. He proved his worth and soon landed a full-time spot on the understanding that he’d stick around and pour the skills he learned from his mentor back into the business.
As a grom, Kei had mostly known high-performance shortboards - the kind built for daring aerials and deep

With my mentor’s full support and a shared respect built on friendship and mutual accountability, I was able to grow my brand alongside my full-time job

barrels on the pro tour. But Peter’s shaping bay opened his eyes to an entirely different universe of surfboard design: varied outlines, fin setups, and retro-inspired forms that blended old-school soul with modern performance. The experience lit a creative fire.
Before long, that spark evolved into Analogy Surfboards - Kei’s own range of alternative, performance-driven boards launched in 2019. With Peter’s

full support and a shared respect built on friendship and mutual accountability, Kei was able to grow his brand alongside his full-time work at Peter Lawson Surfboards, complementing, rather than competing with, his mentor’s legacy.
As any entrepreneur knows, timing and luck can matter as much as skill. For Kei, the COVID-19 pandemic and the industry’s shift from high-performance to
alternative boards provided just the sprinkle of luck his Analogy brand needed to take off. Being part of the tight-knit Umdloti community also played a huge role, he says. Local surfers were always willing to support him - spending on boards, offering feedback, and helping him fine-tune his designs along the way. “It also helps that some of my really close friends are world-class surfers who are able to give super detailed feedback,” Kei says.

While staying true to his partnership with Peter Lawson Surfboards, Kei is steering Analogy alongside it, with plans to bring both brands to Cape Town, where the longboard scene is booming and opportunities abound.
Looking back on the path he’s carved, Kei admits shaping surfboards is no walk on the beach. During the November/December rush, he’s often at it from 7:00 to 17:00, seven days straight, just to keep up with the orders. Running Analogy Surfboards solo means juggling everything, including orders, manufacturing, and finances, which can some days be enough to make even the most stoked surfer sweat.
Still, Kei wouldn’t have it any other way. He loves meeting new people and forging connections, whether chatting with clients, learning about their boards, or noticing the small details that turn into perfectly dialledin custom surfboards.

Asian cuisine is defined by distinct tastes, vibrant colours, and an unmistakable originality in every dish. Located in Gateway Theatre of Shopping, 9Sky Restaurant offers an elevated Asian dining experience, treating guests to delicious food and excitement. You can find them located next to the Gateway Hotel, underneath Virgin Active, and above the Padel courts. Access to the restaurant is via Parking Area A, Level P2, by taking Twilight Drive to reach the parking entrance.
Greeted by their friendly and welcoming team, we were led to the private dining room, separated from the rest of the restaurant by a frosted glass door and windows. The interior throughout the space is sleek and modern, with warm ambient mood lighting. The restaurant also has different seating options to choose from: open-style or semi-private sunken Japanese-style cushion seating,

semi-private Chinese-style chairs, or the open-style classic seating options. The private room seats 22 people around a large table. It is great for intimate gatherings, celebrations, or corporate events. Chattering excitedly as we settled in, Keshin, our lively waiter, guided us through the drinks menu, suggesting what would suit each person the best. With unique signature cocktails, the drink menu has been carefully curated to complement the food, and did not disappoint. The Twilight Sky sparkled like a starry night while the legendary Red Mango infused a hint of spice with its fruity flavour.
On the menu for us were a selection of their iconic and favourite dishes. Behind this innovative spread is the Culinary Director Jason Wu. Hailing from Taiwan, he brings decades of expertise, experience, and numerous international culinary awards, as well as honours. His vision for 9Sky is to redefine what a dining experience is,

DEEP FRIED WHOLE FISH

integrating more interactive and beautifully presented dishes, and our team got to see this first-hand. Starting us off, a sushi boat sailed in, with a selection of sushi on board. It was joined by tempura-coated vegetables, cumin lamb skewers, a vegetarian Thai green curry, and, the showstopper, their signature Peking duck. Made using the entire bird to minimise wastage, and lock in the flavour. Because of the process that goes into making it, you have to pre-order it, but it’s so worth the wait. The duck came with spring pancakes, celery, cucumber, and brown sugar to eat as an accompaniment.

The dynamic menu is crafted across three kitchens to cater to the varied preparations and processes: the sushi bar, the roast kitchen, and the main

kitchen. This versatile approach to food suits the ever-changing characteristics of Umhlanga and the people who love bespoke creations and authenticity. The team has worked hard to recreate the same level of quality you would find in world-class Asian restaurants. Part of the menu are pre-determined interactive set meals served in courses, and we were served Set Menu C. It comprises a beach garden salad, several cuts of Wagyu beef, lamb loin chops, sea tiger prawns, Wagyu braised rice, and a dessert, an adventure for your taste buds. It brings back

the social element to enjoying a meal with other people, as you grill your food at your table together. The components were presented with dry ice in a book-style box, giving the whole experience an otherworldly effect. We gathered around to watch the demonstration on how to grill the meat. There are grills installed in all the tables, with no smoke and minimal odours thanks to the built-in suction system throughout the restaurant. Next, they showed us how to eat the meat once grilled. Taking a lettuce leaf, you add in the meat, topping it with kimchi, radish, and pickled cucumber to balance the flavours. It was eventually our turn to cook, starting from the thinnest piece of meat to the thickest, and tasting along the way.
9Sky is constantly evolving, keeping up with the eclectic Umhlanga lifestyle. They’ve been revamping their outdoor seating to take advantage of KZN’s sunny climate. Reflecting on the evening as dessert was, an impossibly light matcha cake and refreshing snow ice fruit, you could see the effort and attention to detail in every meal and interaction. The dedication poured into this restaurant makes it stand out and is present in every detail, from the hot pots to the gold-tipped chopsticks.

Make the most of your seaside escape with tips from Umhlanga’s top lifesavers.

The beach is one of the happiest places to be during the summer holidays - a place where the sound of crashing waves, warm sunshine, and soft sand instantly lift your spirits. Whether you’re splashing in the surf, building sandcastles with the kids, or relaxing with a good book while working on your tan, the beach offers the perfect blend of fun and relaxation.
But to make the most of your seaside escape, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Simple basics like swimming only where lifeguards are on duty, paying attention to warning flags, staying hydrated, and applying sunscreen regularly can make all the difference between a carefree holiday and an unpleasant mishap. Watching out for rip currents, keeping an eye on children, and knowing your own swimming limits are equally important - the ocean is not a giant dam.
We caught up with Byron Smith and Nic Horn, two seasoned watermen from Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club (URSLC), who shared a few

essentials to help you enjoy the magic of summer at the beach with peace of mind. The URSLC duty crew are volunteer lifeguards who augment the City of eThekwini’s professional lifeguards during peak periods. A large part of their job is preventing incidents, which is why the URSLC captain Byron highlights the importance of listening to lifeguards, swimming between the
red and yellow flags, and paying attention to daily updates on lifeguard tower notice boards. He encourages beachgoers to be inquisitive and ask lifeguards about flag positioning to gain a better understanding of the ocean and her moods. Umhlanga’s beaches are highly dynamic with a lot of rocky structure and constantly shifting sands that cover, expose, and cover them again.

Byron and Nic therefore urge bathers to always stretch their hands out in front of them when diving and only dive in at least knee-deep water. They also advise using the buddy system, swimming in groups, and staying alert to changing conditions.
“Never take your eyes off the sea. Children should also be kept within sight as even shallow water can pose unexpected risks,” they say. When out at the backline, find a landmark and monitor your drift while keeping an eye on lifeguard instructions. If you get in trouble, stay calm, signal by waving your arms, then turn onto your back, try to relax, and breathehelp is on the way.
Always set up beach umbrellas facing into the wind to prevent them from being scooped up and sent on a wild tumble across the beach. Beach balls are super fun. Bright, bouncy, and impossible to ignore as they capture the carefree joy of summer. They are sometimes also tricky to catch, especially when the wind picks up. But as Byron and Nic warn, don’t get too distracted chasing one down, a sneaky shorebreak can creep up and take you out mid-dash.

When it comes to blue bottle stings or cuts and abrasions, there’s no need to panic, as the lifeguards are trained and always happy to help with these. Otherwise, Byron and Nic recommend a dash of vinegar to neutralise the sting of a bluebottle, as well as applying something cold to numb the pain.
Speaking of the ocean’s weird and wonderful inhabitants, it’s always wise to respect the fragile marine life that calls the rocky shoreline homelook, but don’t touch. Octopuses, sea cucumbers, and tiny fish get a little nervous when they’re scooped up and taken to the beach in a bucket for
show-and-tell. The rocks can also be surprisingly sharp, especially where mussels, oysters, and barnacles cling. Slip on a pair of water shoes to avoid cuts and scrapes while exploring the pools. And when you’re done, be sure to leave only footprints and take your trash with you.
Last, but not least, selfies with the lifeguards and their equipment are welcome if it doesn’t interfere with their duties. Always ask first and remember the golden rule: alcohol and water don’t mix.

While Champagne and Cap Classique (formerly Méthode Cap Classique) are both made using the traditional method - where the second fermentation happens in the bottle - the key difference is origin. Cap Classique is produced in South Africa, while Champagne is a protected term used only for wines made in the Champagne region of France. Even sparkling wines from other French regions cannot use the name and are labelled Crémant instead.
The Cap Classique Producers Association recently removed the word “Méthode,” meaning South Africa’s traditional-method sparkling wines are now officially known simply as Cap Classique, or CC.
Prosecco, on the other hand, is produced in Italy using the Charmat method, where the second fermentation occurs in a pressurised tank. This creates a lighter, fruitier, more easy-drinking style loved for its accessibility and freshness.
Sparkling wines also vary by sweetness level, which affects both flavour and food pairing. From Brut Nature (very dry) and Brut (dry) through Extra Dry (off-dry), Sec (noticeably sweet), Demi-Sec (sweet) and Doux (very sweet), there’s a style to suit everything from oysters to dessert.
The festive season is synonymous with celebration, and few things capture that feeling quite like the joyful pop of a champagne cork. From Christmas gatherings and New Year’s toasts to simply celebrating life’s everyday wins, bubbles remain the drink of choice for marking moments big and small. But with shelves full of local Cap Classiques, international Champagnes, Proseccos, Crémants and sparkling wines in a range of styles and prices, choosing the right bottle can feel intimidating.
That’s exactly why we’ve put this guide together. The sparkling wine category is vast, diverse, and exciting, yet often misunderstood. Our goal is to help you navigate the world of bubbles with confidence so you can choose a bottle you’ll genuinely enjoy without overspending. Great sparkling wine exists at every price point; you just need to know what to look for.
To guide us, we turned to Norman Goodfellows’ Wine Sommelier, Rachel Ziqubu.

Every Champagne house has its own style, but at the very top sit the global icons: Dom Pérignon and Cristal. Dom Pérignon, part of Moët & Chandon, is the brand’s flagship Champagne. Rachel describes it as refined, elegant, fruit-driven and slightly linear. Cristal, produced by Louis Roederer, offers similar finesse but with more richness and depth, and comes at a higher price point.

“Dom Pérignon Vintage Brut (R3,499) is one of the fastest movers because it sits at a good price point and has a beautiful history and heritage,” Rachel says. Dom Pérignon Vintage

For those who prefer fuller, more structured Champagnes, Krug and Bollinger sit on the bolder end of the spectrum - serious, complex expressions Rachel calls “for those in the know.”
If you’re looking for a standout Blanc de Blancs option, Maison Ruinart Blanc de Blanc (R1,599) is an excellent choice from the oldest Champagne house, established in 1729.
Cap Classique was first produced in South Africa by Simonsig in Stellenbosch. Today, Kaapse Vonkel remains a consistent favourite.
Leading the category, however, is Graham Beck Cuvée Clive (R1,299) - the brand’s flagship Cap Classique, made from a dominant blend of Chardonnay (mostly from the limestone-rich soils of Robertson) and Pinot Noir (mainly from Durbanville).

For a high-quality mid-range option, Rachel recommends Le Lude Rosé (R429), from Franschhoek, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir characterised by notes of raspberry, grapefruit, and cranberry.
When it comes to Blanc de Blancs, Rachel’s top pick is Genevieve Blanc de Blanc (R369). Produced by Melissa Genevieve Nelson in Bot River, this elegant Cap Classique spends three and a half years on the lees. “It just goes to show that you can get great wines in all the price brackets,” Rachel says.

If Italian Prosecco is your go-to, the key quality indicators are DOC and DOCG, with DOCG representing higher-quality sites and stricter production rules. Prosecco is known for its light, fruity, and refreshing style - perfect for relaxed celebrations or casual toasts. Rachel recommends Bottega Prosecco Gold (R799) for a more luxurious option, and Valdo Prosecco Superiore DOCG Brut (R389) for an excellent mid-range choice. Both reflect the fresh, playful character that makes Prosecco so popular.

This festive we’re popping the cork on all things celebration. No gathering is complete without sips from Norman Goodfellows. So, whether you’re hosting one last get-together or planning the best holiday bash, you can get all your liquor favourites from us.

Trading tinsel for tides and making the ocean the heart of the festive season.
n the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, the festive season looks and feels completely different from how it unfolds inland. Here, the festive season isn’t about glittering malls or formal dinners; it’s about sunlight, salty air, shared laughter, and the easy, spontaneous rhythm of life by the sea.
While families in interior regions tend to spend more of their holidays indoors, often around the braai, under covered patios, or at shopping malls to escape the heat, our coastal
communities let the ocean set the pace of their celebrations. Christmas Day itself and every other sunny day is reserved for what locals consider sacred: going to the beach. Here, festive days start early.
Families and groups of friends flock to the beaches at first light, some heading straight into the surf before sunrise, while others kick back with a coffee and watch the waves roll in. Entire days are spent on the sand, swimming, surfing, playing beach games, or simply soaking up the sun.
The water remains central to just about every coastal tradition. People spend hours exploring the lagoons by kayak, paddleboard, or small boat, often combining it with a picnic or boerie rolls. It’s a lifestyle we are privileged to call ‘normal’. As evening sets in, beachfront decks and bars come alive with the sound of laughter, music, and clinking glasses. Last-minute sundowners with ocean views are almost ceremonial, a daily ritual where locals and visitors alike gather - still wearing slops, boardies, and bikinisto toast another perfect coastal day.

When hunger strikes, seafood replaces the roast. Freshly caught couta, dorado, or tuna from the morning’s haul take centre stage on the braai or as fresh ceviche - a dish that perfectly captures the tropical spirit of the season. Cubed and ‘cooked’ in lime juice with chilli, onion, tomato, and coriander leaves - it’s the quintessential light and zesty summer dish and is best shared barefoot with a cold drink in hand.
Some traditions are purely coastal with deep roots in the community. On Christmas morning, it’s common to see surfers donning red Santa hats and festive swimwear for a sunrise surf, watching the water around them turn to gold as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean. The same happens on New Year’s morning, minus the Christmas colours, followed by coffee and catch-ups with familiar faces before everyone heads home for family festivities.
The Umdloti community also gathers each year for Christmas Carols on the Beach, a much-loved event where locals and holidaymakers spread out

their picnic blankets on the grass patch at the Umdloti Ski-Boat Club. As the sun makes way for the moon over the ocean, families sing along to classic carols, watch a short nativity play, and share food and drinks.
The evening also doubles as a small act of giving, with donations collected for Christmas lunches for
local security guards and lifeguards. While festive traditions may differ from place to place, life on the North Coast reminds us that the season’s true spirit lies in the simplicity of shared moments, open skies, and a sincere appreciation for where we are. Here, celebration doesn’t need glitter or grandeur; just the ocean, community, and another day well spent by the sea.

The Suzuki Jimny is one of those fun but confident cars. You don’t need to spend a long time behind the wheel to understand why so many South Africans adore it. It is compact, cheerful, surprisingly capable, and full of personality. After driving the 1.5 GLX Automatic, I can confirm the Jimny is a true contender.
The first surprise was the space. I’ll be honest, I had a moment where I thought I’d have to fold myself in half. Instead, I hopped in, stretched out, and immediately smiled: there’s proper room in here! From the driver’s seat, I had a commanding view and plenty of elbow room. As a bigger guy, I felt comfortable right away. Visibility is one of the Jimny’s

cane road near Tinley Manor after a storm. With 210 millimetres of ground clearance, a ladder frame, rigid axles, low-range 4WD, and generous approach and departure angles, the Jimny never flinched. Whether climbing slippery inclines, crossing potholes, or weaving through wet gravel, the Jimny felt planted and purposeful. This is where the Jimny stops being a cute, characterful town car and comes into its own.
secret strengths. The square windows, straight bonnet, and high seating position make it incredibly easy to place on the road. The real story is how well it handles daily life. Powered by a 1.5-litre engine that produces 75 kilowatts and 130 newton-metres of torque, the Jimny smoothly moves through traffic with a lightness that makes you smile. On the freeway, it sits happily at the limit with no fuss, perfectly content to cruise rather than chase. The ride is firm in a reassuring way, reminding you there is real off-road heritage in the chassis, but still comfortable on long highway trips. Steering is light with a small footprint, making turning and manoeuvring easy.
Everything changes the moment you leave the tar. On one drive, I turned onto a muddy, rutted, uneven sugar
The Jimny’s practicality is one of its biggest strengths, and I genuinely loved how naturally it slipped into my everyday routine. The side-opening rear door is brilliantly convenient, and loading is super simple. The boot fits groceries, shopping bags, or a couple of small suitcases. Fold the rear seats, and it becomes far more useful than you expect for its size. The GLX model brings strong value. A 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto LED headlights, climate control, electric fold-in mirrors, and multiple airbags give the cabin everything a modern driver wants without clutter.
The Suzuki Jimny 1.5 GLX Automatic is energetic, charming, and seriously capable. It fits daily driving with ease and thrives the moment you take it off the beaten path. Compact in size but big in personality, it is the kind of car that turns simple drives into little adventures. For anyone wanting a lifestyle 4x4 with real ability and real character, I reckon the Jimny is an outstanding choice. 087 250 2375

Justine and Graeme, born and bred Durbanites, reside in the picturesque Umdloti with their two young daughters. Although they've spent most of their lives overseas, sunrise yoga and ice baths on the sand were integral parts of their routine abroad. Founder Justine Deacon Brunt said the idea was sparked on Bondi Beach in Sydney, where ice plunges had a huge vibe, “I wanted to bring that same experience home - the shared energy that came from people plunging together and pushing their limits was exhilarating." She says plunging on Bondi Beach showed her how powerful cold therapy can be - but also how fun!
The purpose behind The Plunge Club is to help people reset both body and mind. Justine explains cold plunges boost recovery, reduce stress, and build resilience. Plus,
the laughs and screams make it an unforgettable, energising experience every time. She notes, “Umhlanga has shown The Plunge Club amazing support - the community vibe is incredible!” Beyond Umhlanga, they cover Ballito, Umdloti, Durban North, and anywhere in KZN. From coffee, run and plunge mornings to birthday recoveries, sports events, and team-building sessions, she says the enthusiasm has been next level. The excitement of people trying to plunge for the first time keeps her inspired.
Right now, The Plunge Club has got two tubs, which makes group plunging super fun, and they’ll add more as they grow. They source ice in bulk to keep the water icy cold and fresh. “It’s a big job behind the scenes, but worth it when people climb out full of energy,” she recalls the early days were tricky with

logistics - tubs, transport, and all that ice - but it’s part of the journey now. Highlights include the epic Goggins Challenge, coffee run plunges, and watching first-timers get hooked instantly.
The screams, laughter, and gees at every event are what make The Plunge Club so memorable and rewarding. They also do corporate plunges before a big meeting, sports recoveries, birthday sessions, weddings, or team-building events.
“The Plunge Club is more than just recovery - it’s about community and fun. We love creating experiences where people step out of their comfort zone, share the vibe, and walk away feeling stronger and unstoppable,” says Justine.

WORDS DANIELLE OLDFIELD
December in Umhlanga means sunshine, beach days, braais, and … let’s be honest, more mince pies and cocktails than we’d usually like to admit. The festive season is meant for joy - but it doesn’t have to come with a side of sluggishness. Here’s how to keep your sparkle while still enjoying every moment:
The One-for-One Rule
Festive bubbles (champagne!) in one hand? Make the next round a sparkling water with lemon or mint. Your head (and your skin) will thank you the next morning. Hydration is the ultimate holiday beauty trickno filter required.
Skip the boring “I shouldn’t” mindset. Instead, pile your plate with colour. A braai becomes a rainbow when you add grilled peppers, corn, and salad alongside the chops. Christmas cake? Totally fine - just pair it with something fresh like summer berries. Think of balance, not punishment.
Forget the gym treadmill. Holiday workouts look like beach bats, swimming to the backline, or chasing the kids down the beach.

Sneaky movement keeps your energy up and balances out those second helpings.
Between the parties, visitors, beach walks, and late nights, sleep often takes a back seat. But 7-8 hours of sleep makes everything better - mood, metabolism, and even patience with the in-laws. Try winding down with herbal tea or five minutes of deep breathing before bed.
January always arrives with pressure to “reinvent” ourselves. Instead of
crash diets or impossible resolutions, pick one fun, doable habit for 2026. Maybe it’s Meat-free Mondays, signing up for a dance class, or joining a wellness WhatsApp group. The smaller (and more enjoyable) the new habit, the longer it lasts.
The holidays should leave you feeling recharged, not wrecked. So, laugh loudly, eat the cake, swim in the ocean, and sneak in the small things that keep you glowing. Your 2026 self will be grateful, and maybe even a little impressed.

WORDS SHIRLEY PEARSON
Only about a third of family businesses worldwide make it to the second generation, and barely one in six reach the third.
Every founder knows the pride of building something from scratch: the late nights, the relentless drive, the satisfaction of creating a livelihood not only for one’s family but for others, too. Yet, the hard truth is that most businesses don’t outlive their founders by much.
Across regions and industries, family enterprises face similar pressures: shifting markets, generational value gaps, and leadership handovers that are more emotional than strategic. But in my experience, the deeper issue has two parts. First, too many founders avoid the inevitable conversations with family, advisors, and themselves about what comes next. Second, they conflate ownership with leadership, forgetting that heirs don’t have to run the business to share in its rewards.
Author Jim Collins reminds us that great companies put “the right people on the bus, doing the right things at the right time.” Yet, this principle is often abandoned when it comes to heirs. Roles are assigned by birthright rather than by merit, and the result is predictable: declining performance,

fractured teams, and the quiet exodus of top talent unwilling to compete in a game they can’t win.
Successful succession doesn’t happen by default; it happens by design. It demands robust systems, transparent governance, and clearly defined ownership frameworks that separate the rights of heirs as beneficiaries from the responsibilities of managers as operators. Families that embrace these conversations preserve both harmony and performance. Those who avoid them invite tension and eventual decline.
When it’s handled poorly, or not at all, the impact reaches far beyond the balance sheet. Relationships strain under unspoken expectations. Siblings who once celebrated together find themselves competing for authority. Spouses and parents retreat into silence, and the very business that was meant to unite the family becomes the source of its greatest divide.
Handled well, succession can be an act of love and foresight, a founder’s final contribution to the future they worked so hard to build. It’s not just about who leads next, but about how the family’s legacy gives the next generation the love that binds them, and the freedom to build their own.
