FroM THE General manaGer

Every December, it seems as though the months have all but flown by and we find ourselves at the end of another year. As I pen my final column for the year, I would like to begin with a thank you, Simbithi, for what has truly been an amazing 2025. Reflecting on a few of our community highlights for this year, retaining our title of Best Estate in the Best of Ballito awards for the third consecutive year stands out, as a testament to the amazing place Simbithi, and the incredible people who call it home.

environmental team has also done some great work restoring the wetland below the Guineafowl Sports Field this year, and the installation of solar panels at the HOA offices has seen us making strides toward a more sustainable way of operating, in line with our strategy.

Another milestone was a new record property sale for Simbithi: R32.5m sold by Rory Anderson of Local Real Estate and Bea van der Merwe of Huizemark. This sale surpassed the previous record of R32m, which was set by Kosie Erasmus from Primo Properties and Gavin Falcke of Campbell Property Group.

We also completed the last phase of our aesthetic upgrades to our gatehouses with the Main and West Gates, and – at the time of writing this – are in the final stages of refurbishing the braai areas at our community centres, just in time for the holidays! The

Looking ahead to 2026, we will begin the year with budget presentations in early February. The team will share more on upcoming projects in the first quarter. We are also excited to start work on the sequel to our first publication, Birds of Simbithi.

Recipes of Simbithi will be published next year, and we’re calling on our community to share the best of your treasured recipes with us. More on that later on in the e-Newsletter.

On behalf of the HOA team and I, we wish you a safe, joyous festive season. If you are travelling, please be safe and we look forward to welcoming you home next year. If you are home for the holidays, welcome back. Enjoy every bit of wonder Simbithi has to offer. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

A Taste of Home: Discovering the Dovyalis caffra - Kei Apple

One of the joys of living in Simbithi is seeing how our gardens reflect the spirit of our Estate - natural, abundant, and uniquely South African. As a gardener and someone who loves growing food, I’m always excited to find indigenous plants that are both beautiful and practical. My latest discovery, the Dovyalis caffra, better known as the Kei apple, ticks all those boxes and more.

In October, I visited the Durban Botanical Garden with Nqobile Makhaye, our Environmental assistant. We were meeting with the orchid expert to learn more about Simbithi’s fascinating orchid species and propogation techniques, especially the striking Eulophia speciosa, which had been flowering recently in our Estate, particularly

noted on the Nsimbi Trail. It was during that visit, though, that something unexpected caught my attention - a large, sunlit Kei apple tree, heavy with bright golden fruit.

We stood under its branches, tasting the ripe fruit together. It was one of those small, special moments that remind you how much there is still to learn and appreciate in our indigenous landscape.

The Kei apple’s flavour surprised me: tangy and sweet, with a hint of apricot and lemon. It’s the kind of fruit that makes you pucker and smile at the same time. It’s as versatile as it is delicious. You can enjoy it fresh, or use it to make homemade jams, chutneys, sauces, or even a bright, zesty sorbet. It’s the

ENVIRONMENT

kind of ingredient that appeals to anyone who loves experimenting in the kitchen or creating something truly local.

What makes this tree even more special is that it’s indigenous and fully approved for planting in Simbithi gardens. Unlike exotic fruit trees, which are generally restricted to containers, the Kei apple can thrive directly in our soil.

With a little care, well-drained soil, good sunlight, and occasional pruning, it rewards gardeners with both beauty and bounty. It usually grows in valley bushveld, wooded grasslands or on forest edges, height 3-5m, with creamy green flowers and the fruits, yellowish orange in colour.

It’s a tough, drought-tolerant species that thrives in our coastal conditions and doubles beautifully as a natural hedge or privacy screen. Its thorny branches deter unwanted visitors, while its fruit attracts birds such as the Purple-crested turaco and Black-eyed bulbuls, adding life and colour to any garden.

In Simbithi, the Dovyalis caffra has been seen fruiting on Tamboti Drive, on the hill down towards Trimeria Walk and some good ones on Cussonia Way.

For anyone who loves the idea of an edible, indigenous garden, the Kei apple is a wonderful place to start. Plant one, and you’re not just growing a tree - you’re cultivating a piece of Simbithi’s living heritage.

ALIEN PLANT oF THE MoNTH

The Hidden Invader in My Garden: Discovering the Brazilian Pepper Tree

When I first moved into Simbithi, one of the things I loved most was the lush, natural beauty surrounding every home. Our Estate’s plant life feels like an extension of the coastal forest itself - carefully curated, deeply connected to our environment, and proudly indigenous.

shrub in my own driveway was, in fact, an alien invader.

So, imagine my surprise when I recently discovered that a beautiful, glossy-leaved

It was a fellow resident who kindly pointed it out during a visit and Nqobile, our Environmental Assistant Manager confirmed - it was definitely a Schinus terebinthifolia, commonly known as the Brazilian pepper tree. I’d always admired its pretty red berries and dense foliage, which offered a sense

WORDS Shirley Wittig

of privacy near the entrance to my home. But what I hadn’t realised was that this attractive plant is a highly invasive species, not part of our indigenous landscape, and definitely not on Simbithi’s approved plant list.

After a bit of research, I learned just how problematic this plant can be. The Brazilian pepper tree spreads aggressively, crowding out indigenous flora and disrupting local ecosystems. Birds and wind disperse its seeds far beyond our gardens, allowing it to establish quickly in natural areas where it outcompetes native species.

delicate biodiversity. Fortunately, there are wonderful indigenous alternatives that can offer the same privacy and beauty without the ecological harm. Plants like the Common Crowberry (Searsia pentheri), Wild Pomegranate (Burchellia bubalina), or Num-Num (Carissa macrocarpa) make excellent screening options. They’re hardy, attractive, and provide food and habitat for local birds and insects. I wanted to share this small discovery to raise awareness. Many of us may have alien species in our gardens without even knowing it.

With that in mind, I decided to have it removed - before it became a problem for our Estate’s

By taking the time to check and replace them with indigenous plants, we help preserve the natural harmony that makes Simbithi so special.

GARDEN Technician Training

As part of and support resident staff, On 28 October 2025, we hosted Level 1 Garden Maintenance Training for garden technicians at Simbithi Estate. This initiative supports our strategic initiative which is to optimise stakeholder relationships and empowering resident staff. The training covers aspects of our Landscaping Maintenance Protocol and is open to all garden technicians in Simbithi. Through the training, we aim to uplift our community and empower garden technicians to assist residents by effectively aligning garden maintenance tasks with our protocols. We began with theory, followed by a practical session. The garden technicians will receive a copy of the notes to refer to and certificates if they complete both parts of the training.

This marks our second annual training, following the successful launch in 2024, where seven garden technicians impressed us with their knowledge of plant names in vernacular languages to my

surprise because the vernacular names are not so common, excuse the irony. This year brought another highlight: when a garden technician demonstrated a “sausage test” to assess soil suitability for planting, helping determine whether compost is needed.

We welcomed 24 garden technicians this year, and seeing this growth feels as rewarding as planting a single plant that contributes to a thriving habitat. We encourage residents to book in their garden technicians on the following year, communication will be made in due time for next year’s training. This training supports estate vision which is to guarantee the sustainability of Simbithi Eco-Estate, with goals to protect habitat, biodiversity or resident satisfaction and confidence of private gardeners when they have accountability to what they are doing. We continue to be inspired by the enthusiasm shown by our garden technicians.

Each year brings new learning and growth, and this inspires us to grow our programme.

Happy Holidays!

FROM THE Golf Chairperson

In what feels like the blink of an eye, 2025 has come and gone. It has been a truly rewarding year for Simbithi Golf. Both our Men’s and Ladies’ League teams achieved top honours in their respective leagues - an outstanding milestone in the history of our Club. Their spirit, determination, and camaraderie were exceptional, and we look forward to building on this success in the years ahead.

This year also marked the completion of Phase 1 of our Course Improvement Programme. Following several years of upgrades, the golf course has now been re-rated and re-stroked, and we have successfully transitioned from four tees to three. As always, the course remains our highest operational priority in terms of resources and focus. To support our continued progress, we have engaged the Matko team for a quarter-long trial aimed at strengthening our maintenance programme. This includes hollow-tining and fertilising

the green surrounds, as well as areas of the fairways where growth has been limited. The rough will be aerated and cut to promote healthier, more consistent turf. Treatment of broadleaf grasses and weeds will continue as usual. We hope that by the end of summer - just in time for Club Champs - we will see visible benefits of this additional effort and be able to determine whether these interventions should be incorporated into our routine programme going forward. With the festive season approaching, the Golf Section will hand over responsibility for daily golf and competitions to SCC. As such, there will be no Group Competitions

from 15 December until 9 January 2026. We are, however, excited to host our first Junior Club Championships on 13 and 14 December. Both rounds will be played in the afternoons, ensuring the morning fields remain open for members and visitors. Best of luck to all our junior golfers!

Wishing you all a relaxing festive season.

Rest well, enjoy your time with family and friends, and I look forward to seeing you back on the fairways in the New Year.

Cheers,

FroM THE Men’s Captain

Dear Simbithi Golfing Fraternity,

As we conclude a highly successful 2025 golfing calendar, we do so with immense pride and excitement for an even more rewarding and eventful 2026 season ahead.

We are proud to announce that Simbithi will be entering two men’s league teams for 2026:

• A League side under the leadership of Terence Hope

• Allerton A League side under the leadership of Philup Jansen

Wishing every golfing member a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

A special mention goes to the spirited match held on 8 November between SEMS and the Slammers. Congratulations to Mike Helens and the Slammers team for once again defending their title. Our golf course remains in excellent condition thanks to the dedicated efforts of Amos and the Matkovich Team. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Adriaan, Shanel, Anele, the Pro Shop team, and our porters for their outstanding service and commitment throughout the year. The last formal golf event for 2025 is the GM cup held on 29th November which is always a highlight.

Golf tip: As a beginner, focus on the fundamentals of grip, posture, and a smooth swing. In addition to these basics, understanding course etiquette and prioritising your short game - chipping and putting - are essential for lowering your scores and enjoying the game.

Warm regards,

FroM THE LaDies’ Captain

Course report

General

Despite the odd cooler day we are now well and truly into summer. The course has greened up beautifully and all efforts are working toward a successful festive season for the club. We had 48mm of rainfall during the month. This coupled with our summer fertilisation programme has seen a significant improvement in the turf quality.

Greens

Greens are looking healthy and the turf quality will improve further over the coming weeks. We continue with our monthly chemical treatments, cut daily and

double cut on Fridays with a view to protecting them as we get deeper into the festive season and rounds of golf increase.

Cut Height: 3mm

Stimp: 8.5 ft

Tees and Collars

The tees and collars have received a foliar fertiliser application as well as the necessary treatment for dollar spot. These areas are cut three time per week. We verticut the tees and performed selective hollow tining on the worst tees post winter. The intent is to see significant improvement into the festive season.

CoUrSE rEPorT

As part of our improvement plan we also hollow tined all greens surrounds in order to improve playability.

Fairways and Rough

Our frequency of cut on the fairways has increased to three times per week while divots are repaired on a daily basis with a specific focus on longer holes. The treatment of broadleaf grasses and weeds continues. We have selectively targeted poor growth areas on the fairways with hollowtining and the introduction of compost to improve turf health. International Day & Captain’s Dinner

Thanks to all who joined us for two special highlights on our golf calendar. What an exceptional day on the course!

Congratulations, Shanel!

We are exceptionally proud of our Sports Administrator, Shanel Pillay, who recently completed the R&A Women in Golf Leadership Foundation Programme. Shanel and Golf Operations Manager Adriaan Nell attended the virtual programme close recently, where she and several others from around the country were celebrated. The six-month programme was hosted jointly by R&A and GolfRSA in partnership with Club Management Association of South Africa (CMASA).

The programme provides women across the golf industry with opportunities to enhance their leadership capability, confidence and to connect with like-minded women in golf.

SCC General Manager Craig Nell congratulated Shanel, thanking her for her contribution to the golf department and Club. “Shanel’s dedication is recognised, her growth is seen and her input valued. We are very proud of you and are blessed to have you in our team.”
