TNOTE EDITOR'S

here’s always something special about our August edition. Maybe it’s the way the stories land a little deeper. Or maybe it’s just the simple truth: women in our lives carry a lot, and they do it with a kind of strength that’s both quiet and unmistakable.

Through decades of determination, women have been reshaping what leadership, care, and contribution look like. As the dynamics of community and society continue to morph, what remains constant, though, are the deeply valued qualities of empathy, resilience, intuition, and the ability to handle complexity with grace. These aren’t soft skills. They’re essential strengths, and they continue to shape our communities in the ways that matter.

Personally, I owe much of who I am to the incredible women in my life. I was raised by a devoted mother whose sacrifices and unwavering belief in a better future for her children laid the foundation for everything I’ve become. Her love was steady and unshakeable, and her dreams for us were way, way bigger than her own.

In marriage, I always say that Lorinda choosing me all those years ago was the best thing to happen to me. Her strength has never dimmed even when life threw curveballs. Her belief in our family and how she approaches challenges has been a steady, guiding rhythm in the life we’ve built together. She’s taught me that real partnership isn’t about roles (unless it comes to who makes the coffee in the morning—then it’s me!). It's about presence, humility, unconditional love and walking forward together.

And now, Lorinda and I get to watch and learn from the next generation. Our daughter and daughter-in-law continue to expand our perspective in ways we didn’t expect but really

do appreciate. They’re clear-eyed and kind, feisty, challenging in all the right ways, and fiercely protective of the values and legacy they’re helping shape. It’s exciting to watch and humbling too.

So, for me, this edition is a tribute—not in a grand, performative way, but in a grounded, deeply respectful one. From Tracey Rowe’s story of launching a business in her 50s after 25 years in corporate roles to Philisiwe Gumede's, Sureka Singh's, and the rest of the incredible ladies' journeys as part of our "Fearless & Female" feature—there’s no shortage of inspiration here. I also think you’ll enjoy reading “She Means Business,” “Bloom Together,” and “Yoga: The Path to Health and Peace”—all really powerful stories in this edition.

I love that this magazine gets to tell all these stories. And that with each edition, we uncover more. That says something about the kind of community we’re building. One worth celebrating.

Lastly, I want to steal a moment to celebrate Ceagan and Courtney’s wedding! I love weddings—but nothing is more special than seeing your own children find the right person and commit to a life together. The wedding was great fun with loads of laughter, dancing, and what is now officially a tradition: the midnight hot dogs!

Congratulations, Ceags and Courts. Here’s to a life filled with happiness, adventure, and love.

WORDS TRACEY ROWE

If you had told me five years ago I would be launching a new business in my 50s, I would have smiled politely (thought you were bonkers) and carried on with my to-do list. After all, I was already 25 years into my corporate career, had held executive and board-level roles across global businesses and ticked most of the traditional “success” boxes.

But life (and maybe a little bit of the universe) has a way of nudging you toward the uncomfortable when it’s time for growth.

After decades of playing the corporate game, I found myself increasingly frustrated and uninspired. My passion for and love of HR was waning—the spark was gone. HR had increasingly become transactional, policyheavy, and disconnected from the people it was meant to serve. Over lunch (and a wee bit of wine), Jane Waters (my now business partner and co-founder) and I thought, “What if we did it differently?”

We created a business designed for businesses like us—entrepreneurial, agile and brave. Was it terrifying? Absolutely. We were both equal breadwinners and left security behind to build something from scratch. But we believed in our purpose, our model and, more importantly, each other. Three years on and we’re having a blast. We’ve worked with

incredible clients across Africa and the Middle East, supporting bold founders who are scaling fast. We’ve watched our work unlock growth, alignment, and culture shifts that matter. We’ve also built a tribe of likeminded HR professionals who believe, like we do, that people are the most underrated lever in any business.

But perhaps our greatest reward? Freedom.

Freedom to choose how we work. To laugh more. To trust our instincts. To walk away from work that doesn’t align with our values. To say, “Yes, we can help” and really mean it.

If you are sitting on the edge of a career reinvention, whether you're 35 or 55, it’s not too late, you’re not too old or too anything. You’re bang on time. Starting a business later in life doesn’t mean slowing down, but rather showing up with purpose, courage and decades of hard-earned wisdom.

Sometimes, starting over is exactly where you’re meant to begin.

TRACEY holds a Master’s Degree in Leadership, Performance and Change Management. She has been the HR Director for various international investment banks and co-founded 52.com—a fractional HR services company providing small to mid-size businesses with executive-level fractional HR service.

But we believed in our purpose, our model and, more importantly, each other. www.weare52.com

Wellness Reimagined

WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER

Discover Source SA: Where Science Meets Soul, Harnessing Scalar Energy to Reconnect, Recharge, and Revitalise.

As life continues to become more demanding, technology has also made significant advancements in making it easier to maintain health and well-being between busy schedules and full days. Research into alternative forms of healing, scalar energy, particularly, and studying how its properties relate to health benefits. Scalar waves, which are described as stationary, permeate space and matter, and potentially influence biological processes and have healing properties.

The Energy Enhancement (EE) System used at Source SA works by triggering the core light within our DNA, essentially rekindling the body’s self-healing ability.

Sorisha Naidoo, through Source SA, has a mission to harness the power of cuttingedge scalar energy to restore balance, vitality and peace in people’s lives. Source SA integrates scientific principles and holistic well-being, dedicated to the advancement and application of the EE System. Their goal is to have every client

who walks through their doors leave feeling seen, supported and empowered. They aim to help clients feel whole again, whether they’re battling chronic pain, stress, fatigue or emotional imbalances.

Sorisha, in her search for less invasive yet effective treatments, decided that she needed to bring this technology to the Umhlanga community. “Like many, I’ve seen loved ones struggle with pain, exhaustion, and emotional burnout, and I’ve faced my own challenges too,” Sorisha

Situated within ULAS, Source By SSBO is dedicated to fostering an atmosphere where individuals can authentically connect with and embrace the rejuvenating aspects of this state-of-the-art technology.

explains. She strongly believes that our community deserves access to the best that global wellness has to offer.

Umhlanga, being a place of progress, beauty and high energy, is also a hub for modern living. Many who live here often juggle high-pressure careers and lead fast-paced lifestyles. “I felt it was the perfect environment to introduce a sanctuary—a place where people could heal, recharge, and reconnect with themselves,” she shares. She has endeavoured to create balance amidst the bustle, right in the central point of KwaZulu-Natal.

Being in a leadership and influential position in the community, recognising the key qualities of a good leader is the first step to embodying them yourself. “Empathy, resilience, and vision. A good leader listens deeply and leads with heart,” Sorisha expresses. She emphasises empowering others and staying grounded, yet not being afraid to evolve with the advancing modern times either, “I believe in uplifting those around me because leadership is ultimately about service and impact,” she asserts. Passionate about balance, downtime is also essential to performing your best and being there

for those around you. “I love spending quality time with my family—that’s my greatest joy. Music, meditation, nature walks, and a good book help me recharge,” she shares. Of course, if you love what you do, even what you do for work becomes something that brings you peace, and Source SA has become that for Sorisha.

With August being Women’s Month, we look at how powerful women have shaped the landscapes in the country and appreciate those who fought for what we have today. “Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much we can still do. It’s about honouring the strength, intuition, and courage that women bring to every part of life, from boardrooms to family rooms,” Sorisha observes. As a mother and entrepreneur, she sets out to show women everywhere that you can nurture, lead and innovate, all from a place of compassion and purpose.

& Female Fearless

Get to know these incredible women who are leaders in their respective industries, breaking glass ceilings and paving the way for future generations.

Philisiwe Gumede The Oyster Box Hotel

Who am I?

I am the newly appointed General Manager of The Oyster Box Hotel —one of South Africa’s most iconic luxury properties. My role involves ensuring excellence across all departments— from guest experience and hospitality

standards to financial performance and stakeholder engagement.

I also oversee the strategic and operational leadership. What makes this field special is its ability to create unforgettable experiences for people

“Philisiwe’s

breadth of experience, strategic mindset and deep understanding of the South African hospitality landscape makes her a great fit for this legendary property.”

from all walks of life. Hospitality is about heart, precision, and vision. Being in this position, especially as the first female GM of this prestigious hotel, is deeply meaningful. It represents progress, possibility, and the power of representation.

It’s a culmination of over 24 years of dedication across hospitality, tourism, gaming, and healthcare—both locally and internationally. I am currently completing my MBA in business administration, eager to drive business transformation and enhance customer experience.

A day at the office

Every day differs in hospitality, and that’s what keeps me inspired. My mornings typically begin with a walkthrough of the property to connect with staff and guests, followed by strategic meetings with department heads to review performance, guest feedback, and operational priorities. Afternoons are often spent engaging with stakeholders, reviewing financials, and planning upcoming events or initiatives.

My downtime

When I’m not immersed in the world of hospitality, I find joy in spending time

with family, and I love sports (soccer and rugby). I enjoy reading about leadership and emotional intelligence, which helps me stay grounded and inspired. Music and storytelling also play a big role in helping me decompress. I believe in creating space for reflection, which allows me to return to work with renewed energy and perspective.

What Women’s Day means to me

It is a powerful reminder of the resilience, brilliance, and leadership of women across generations. At this point in my career, it holds even deeper significance.

Being the first female General Manager is not just a personal achievement—it’s a symbol of creating a new path for others. It’s about honouring those who came before me and empowering those who will come

after. It’s a celebration of progress, inclusion, and opportunity for all women in the workplace.

For future female professionals

To every young woman stepping into the professional world—especially in hospitality and tourism—know that your voice, your vision, and your presence matter. Be bold, be curious, and never underestimate your ability to lead. Invest in your education, build strong networks, and seek mentors who challenge and uplift you. Learn to balance empathy with assertiveness and always stay true to your values.

The road may not always be easy, but it is worth it. You belong in every room where decisions are made.

Who am I?

I am a CEO by trade and philanthropist by heart. I am proud to lead The Gold Bar, a gold recycling company with six stores across the country, offering a secure environment to sell all your unwanted gold jewellery.

A day at the office

I do not have a 9-5 working day. As a business owner, I'm constantly analysing sales performance across my stores, addressing issues as they arise, and adjusting strategies as needed.

My downtime

I am a mum of an eight-monthold baby boy, so any free time I have is spent with my baby and family, as they are very

important to me. Travelling abroad has always been my way to decompress in the past, and this year, I get to take my baby with me.

What Women’s Day means to me

This year, it has an extra special meaning. I find myself trying to be the best mum I can be while juggling multiple businesses and learning to get the most out of a 24-hour day. There is no perfect day or ideal plan, but it is all worth it. I hope my son sees me working towards big goals and learns that consistent effort leads to success. I believe he'll grow up with the same drive and ambition, knowing that nothing is impossible.

The Wright Sisters

Who are we?

Black+Wright Interiors

Stacey: I am an artist and the owner of Black+Wright. I started Black+Wright eight years ago after working at LIV Village. I designed, furnished, and bought items for homes in the village. Working for an NPO, with limited funds, forced me to think out of the box and strategically buy and place each item the children needed with functionality and beauty. With Debs joining me, it's helped Black+Wright grow in scope and given me a trusted teammate for support.

Debbie: I joined Stacey a year ago, where our dream from 20 odd years ago has now come true. Even though I have always worked in administration and finance, creativity has never left my heart. I blogged for many years (before my kids came along), on worldwide creatives and interiors, always keeping a close link to that part of my passion. Working with my sister, who is two years and one day older than me, is a perfect combination of business and personal passion. How fun is that?

This is what we do

By combining our relationships with

helping sell a property before it even hits the market—that’s when we know the staging truly worked!

Debbie: Stacey has built up a warehouse of furniture and décor for all different styles and price points, so we either use our stock or work with some of what the client has. When we transform a space and see that positive outcome, it’s deeply satisfying.

Our downtime

our suppliers and collaborating with developers and agents, we come in and turn the house into a home, elevating the space for a specific market and, in doing this, selling the property or renting it to recurring guests. We also offer interior solutions and consultations. Our mission is to help buyers see their future home and to allow sellers or developers to showcase their vision in the very best light. We believe everyone deserves a beautiful space.

A day at the office

Stacey: No two days are ever the same—and that’s part of the magic. Some of our favourite moments have been collaborating with developers, sellers and agents to elevate their listings. There’s nothing quite like

Stacey: If I’m not painting, I’m by the ocean or trail walking, or hanging with friends and family. Living on the North Coast makes you feel like you are on a permanent holiday, and my husband and I love experiencing different places.

Debbie: Everyone knows I love plants, and I enjoy quiet moments of quality time with family or reading. Life with a special needs son keeps me grounded and busy, so simple joys like pottering around the house or grabbing coffee with a friend are the moments that truly fill my cup.

What Women’s Day means to us

We know that building a career in a competitive industry can be difficult. As a sister team, we love the idea of women collaborating. It’s about recognising each other's value and allowing space for everyone to contribute in the way they do best.

For future female professionals

Stacey: Figure out what makes your heart happy. Take the leap to follow your gifts, to do what you love. God has given you a talent—don’t be afraid to use it.

Debbie: I have learned that a qualification should be the by-product of your passion and not that your passion is a by-product of your qualification. Don’t let limitations stop you from reaching your dream.

Sureka Singh

Durban North Smile Center

Who am I?

I am one of the Directors of a management company called SMERA, a Sanskrit word translated as ‘smiling’ or ‘beaming’. My educational background consists of an MBA, complemented by an honours degree in Hindu Studies, and a Graphic Design Degree. I also have a diploma in Indian Classical Dance.

Personally, and professionally, I have learned many valuable lessons. But by far, the most important thing is that community really matters and our collective strengths enable us to go beyond our imperfections, face the challenges, and thrive. I am also a mother to two beautiful daughters. It has been one of the most important and cherished parts of my life, if not the most important. I am inspired by my daughters, and I learn from them every day!

This is what I do

Durban North Smile Center is a multidisciplinary specialist healthcare centre where the healthcare practitioners strive to provide comprehensive care in a compassionate and supportive environment. We also manage a NonProfit Organisation called the Wentworth Foundation for the treatment and rehabilitation of indigent children who are born with facial deformities. Our mission is always to serve others, and

with this sense of togetherness and support from our community, we work towards invoking a healthy, vibrant and confident smile in all who come across our path.

A day in my life

Work is a home away from home. I consider my co-workers family, and each one a homemaker. I do believe that they embody the ethos of truly caring, coupled with an incredibly high level of skill. The special moments for me have been recognising the strengths of the people around me and bringing these strengths to their attention.

What Women’s Day means to me

My thoughts are reflected in the profound words of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, that “If women are given due recognition and encouragement, they will shine with brilliance in all fields and will serve the house, country, and the entire world gloriously, contributing to the welfare of the entire humanity.” –Divine Discourse, April 19, 1998.

For future female professionals

Asking for help has been one of the most difficult things that I have had to overcome as a woman. Often, we are expected to be superheroes—doers of all tasks.

And while it is true that we can do a lot, we suffer the consequences of taking on too much. So, now I ask for help from the right people when I need it. I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate ALL the incredible women who have contributed to my belief that life doesn’t happen in isolation and that business success is governed in many ways by inclusivity, sharing, co-creating, compassion and understanding.

WORDS KAI COATES

Meet locals Shireen and Heidi, who have turned their Suzuki Jimnys into freedom machines, built for escape, exploration, and everything in between.

With its unmistakable boxy silhouette, rugged charm, and go-anywhere attitude, the Suzuki Jimny has become something of a cult classic in South Africa. Once considered a niche vehicle, it has now roared into mainstream popularity, ranking amongst the country’s top-selling cars. But what exactly is it about the Jimny that

has captivated such a wide (and wildly enthusiastic) audience? It’s simple: the Jimny blends affordability with serious off-road elements, making it a rare breed in today’s market. Light and nimble, it is purpose-built for rugged trails and weekend getaways, yet still compact enough for city parking. More than that, it’s a vehicle that invites adventure even before you turn the key.

For both Shireen and Heidi, the Suzuki Jimny isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a vessel for courage, curiosity, and freedom. Whether it’s solo nights under the stars, conquering river crossings, or working remotely in the middle of nowhere, these women prove that adventure isn’t defined by size, but by spirit. And in that sense, the Jimny is the perfect partner in exploration.

SHIREEN HEIDI

Shireen & Bee (the micro-overlander)

Digital nomad and backpacker Shireen always dreamed of exploring Africa overland. When the five-door Suzuki Jimny launched, it felt like fate. “It’s the perfect size for me, and there are so many products that make it microoverlander worthy,” she says.

She named her Jimny BWild1985, affectionately known as “Bee”, and has kitted it out for full-time adventure. Upgrades include all-terrain tyres, rock sliders, custom suspension, and a full power setup with solar panels and a dual-battery system. A fridge, drawer storage, rooftop tent, awning, and even jerry cans turn Bee into a home on wheels. Her office travels with her, too. “I plan adventure days first, then work

around that. My table becomes a desk, and the awning and sidewalls give me privacy for calls.” What surprised her most? “The incredible people and animals I’ve met - hippos seem to love Bee!” she laughs.

To other women considering this lifestyle, Shireen says, “What are you waiting for? I’m 40, happily single, and loving this life. The pandemic taught me that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. Trust your gut - and go.”

Heidi & The Toad

A photography workshop in 2020 changed Heidi’s life—and it all started with a test drive in a Gen 3 Jimny. “I was hooked,” she says. Back home, a Jungle Green, three—door, Jimny winked at her from a dealership in Hillcrest. She called it The Toad—and never looked back. Heidi has since transformed The Toad into a serious overlanding rig, complete with custom bumpers, a Des Sol turbo, upgraded

suspension, movement-sensor solar lights for wild camping, and either a rooftop tent or her off-road teardrop caravan, the Vagabond Rogue. “The Jimny is fully capable straight out of the box,” she says, “but I’ve customised mine to suit the remote places I go.”

From flooded river crossings in Baviaanskloof - where a local farmer swore in disbelief as she towed the Rogue through—to nights alone at Kubu Island with her camera gear and solar

setup, most of the time Heidi travels solo, relying on her 4x4 skills and “gutsy little Toad.” “Off-roading is scary and exhilarating—but when you do it, there’s no better feeling. Trust your Jimny. She’ll get you through.” As a landscape photographer chasing light in wild places, Heidi sums it up simply: “She’s not just my car. She’s all I have out there.”

So, if you’ve been waiting for a sign to get a Jimny and take the road less travelled, this might just be it. After all, the best stories don’t happen in traffic. They happen on dirt roads out in the wilderness.

Braai DAY DAY

With Bluff Meat Supply

Here’s a simple and quick braai set up with three easy (and delicious) recipes to make your Braai Day even better without the long hours!

Flame-Kissed Lamb Chops Flame-Kissed Lamb Chops

INGREDIENTS

• Bluff Meat Supply (BMS) Lamb Loin Chops

• salt and pepper to taste

• chopped parsley for garnish

• marinade of your choice

METHOD

1. Get your fire ready. Use charcoal or briquettes (both available at BMS) to get the fire going, and once it gets hot enough, adjust coals for direct heat.

2. Season the chops with spices, salt,

pepper, garlic, rosemary and thyme to add great flavour and for that mouth-watering aroma! Then, coat with your marinade of choice and leave to sit for 10-15 minutes before placing them on the braai (check out Bluff Meat Supply for great options!).

3. Braai the lamb chops for 3-4 minutes per side (longer for well-done).

4. Grab your dish and let the chops rest in there for five minutes wrapped in foil. This helps keep them juicy. Grab a piece with a side of your choice!

SIDE

Rainbow coleslaw

1. Grab a bag of your favourite coleslaw combination

2. Add a few spoonfuls of mayonnaise, and you can add in yoghurt for a healthier dressing, (in ratio to how much slaw you have) and squeeze in lemon juice for zest

3. Mix all together and serve with your mains

Getting the Fire Right Choose the Right Fuel: Hardwood charcoal, seasoned wood, or quality briquettes will give the best smoky flavour.

A Smokin Rump Steak A Smokin Rump Steak

INGREDIENTS

• BMS Rump steak (your choice of grams)

• salt and pepper to taste

• butter

• dry spice rub

METHOD

1. Use a dry spice rub to flavour your steak. You can apply the spices and leave for 30 mins to two hours (or overnight) for a deeper flavour.

2. Before braaiing, let the steaks sit out of the fridge for 20-30 minutes. This ensures even cooking and a perfect sear.

3. Make sure your coals are hot and glowing, but not flaming. You should be able to hold your hand above the grid for 5-6 seconds before it feels too hot. Have two heat zones: high heat for searing and medium heat for finishing off.

4. Braai rump steak for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, sear over hot coals for a crust, then rest under foil for 5-7 minutes. In between, baste with melted butter to taste.

5. Cut up and enjoy!

SIDE

Sweetcorn

1. Preboil the sweet corn until it is soft, add salt to taste to the pot

2. Chargrill the corn on indirect heat

3. Top with butter and some chopped parsley

Sizzling Spare Ribs Sizzling Spare Ribs

INGREDIENTS

• BMS Pork Ribs

• marinade of your choice

• salt and pepper to taste

• dipping sauce of your choice

METHOD

1. Marinate the pork ribs and season with salt and pepper ahead of time and set aside or refrigerate them. Bluff Meat Supply has

a great range of marinades and spices to choose from.

2. Prepare medium coals for your braai. Use indirect heat for the ribs to avoid burning the marinade.

3. Braai ribs bone-side down for 20-30 minutes, turning occasionally. Baste during the last 10 minutes for a caramelised finish.

4. Let the ribs rest for five minutes, then slice and serve with dipping sauce. Also available at your nearest BMS store!

WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER

Let’s face it—women are often so busy caring for others that their own health becomes the last item on the to-do list … somewhere after “buy dog food” and “book school photos.” But here’s the truth: investing in your health isn’t selfish—it’s smart. And it’s high time we normalised that.

At Aesthetic Options, we believe women deserve to feel energised, confident, and connected at every stage of life. Whether you’re in your 30s navigating hormonal changes post-baby, or in your 50s wondering why your jeans don’t love you back anymore, we’re here to support you with evidence-based solutions designed for real women.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Think of hormones as your body’s Wi-Fi— when the signal is strong, everything syncs beautifully. But when oestrogen, progesterone or testosterone levels start dropping (often after 35), the system starts buffering. Cue mood swings, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, low libido … shall I go on? With customised bioidentical hormone therapy, we help women restore balance safely. HRT isn’t about turning back time, it’s about improving quality of life—sharpening focus, improving sleep, boosting energy, and restoring that sense of you-ness that so many women feel they’ve lost.

Intimate Health & Female Sexual Dysfunction

Let’s break a taboo—vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, or loss of libido are common and treatable. The peptide PT141 (Bremelanotide) is one of our secret weapons. It works through the brain (not just blood flow) to spark sexual desire in women, especially helpful in cases of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). It’s like jumpstarting the car on a cold morning. Sometimes your mind needs a

little coaxing to remember it can still take the scenic route.

FemiLift: Laser Rejuvenation

Imagine giving your intimate tissues a little Pilates session—without the plank holds. FemiLift is a gentle CO2₂laser treatment that improves vaginal tightness, elasticity, and lubrication. It’s safe, quick, and has minimal downtime. Many women tell us they feel stronger, more confident, and more in control after just a few sessions. It’s not about aesthetics—it’s about comfort, function, and freedom.

The O-Shot: Own Your Orgasm

Yes, it’s a thing—and yes, it works. The O-Shot uses your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate tissue regeneration and increase sensitivity in the clitoris and vaginal area. Think of it as a reboot for your pleasure centres—completely natural, and administered in a safe clinical setting.

Wellness Screening: Mammograms & Bone Density Scans

No woman enjoys these appointments, but they’re as essential as your annual car service. Regular mammograms and bone density scans help detect breast cancer or osteoporosis early, when they’re easiest to treat. At Aesthetic Options, we approach screenings with compassion and comfort. Prevention is power, and we want every woman to feel empowered through knowledge.

So ladies, the takeaway is this: your health isn’t a luxury—it’s your foundation. Whether you want to feel more like yourself, reconnect with your partner, or just get a better night’s sleep, you deserve the kind of care that listens, honours, and uplifts. At Aesthetic Options, we’re here to help you feel at home in your own body, at every age and every stage.

Bloom Together

The Umhlanga Garden Club

WORDS KAI COATES

In a fast-growing coastal hub like Umhlanga, where life moves quickly and spaces are changing, there's one community that’s been quietly, joyfully tending to the growth of another kind—green, grounded, and gloriously blooming.

Founded 65 years ago by the visionary Marjorie Leibrandt, The Umhlanga Garden Club has blossomed into more than a gathering of plant lovers; it's a lifestyle, a learning space, and a deeply rooted friendship circle. Today, under the warm leadership of Laurelle Barnett, club president for the past 20 years, the club remains an evergreen symbol of local connection and botanical inspiration.

“We’re about bringing like-minded ladies together who share a love for gardening and plants,” Laurelle shares. “It’s more than a club. It’s about connection—with each other and with nature.”

A Living Legacy

From humble beginnings in each other’s homes to the Dutch Reformed Church, and later Trinity Methodist, the club now meets at the sunny Rolling Hills Club every second Tuesday of the month. The 26-member club welcomes new faces with open arms—whether you’re a green-fingered guru or just learning to keep a succulent alive.

LAURELLE BARNETT

What's Growing in Umhlanga?

Spring is the club’s favourite time of year— and for good reason. Coastal gardeners are spoiled for choice in Umhlanga’s subtropical climate. “Indigenous plants really thrive here,” says one long-time member. “But you can go big if you’ve got the space—bold tropicals do beautifully, too.”

For a spectacular spring garden, the club recommends:

• Petrea volubilis - a spring showstopper

• Amaryllis and indigenous bulbsvibrant and fuss-free

• Azaleas, Star Jasmine, Bougainvillea - perfect for winter into spring transitions

• Oncidiums (Orchids) - striking for those who like a challenge

And don't forget the showy, satisfying thrill of edibles—one member proudly grew a 20kg pumpkin, a 1.7kg pawpaw, and towers of red banana trees!

Dig, Compete, Repeat

Monthly meetings are anything but ordinary. Expect lively competitions in floral arrangements, potted plants, and the beloved “brag plant” section, where members show off their prized performers. Judging duties fall to the meticulous Niri Singh. There's always a guest speaker or demonstrator, and the ever-popular annual garden quiz brings out the fun and facts in equal measure. Naturally, no gathering is complete without tea, treats, and a lot of laughter. One member who lives in a nearby community is even using gardening as a skill-building project, hoping to involve others in her community and share the joy of working with soil and seeds.

Gardening with Purpose

But this club isn't just about beautiful blooms—it's about thoughtful planting, too.

“We always encourage indigenous gardening, planting for the ecosystem, and avoiding anything poisonous to pets,” Laurelle explains. “We love seeing butterflies, bees, birds—it’s all part of the garden’s rhythm.”

They promote:

• Biodiversity through block planting

• Composting food scraps to enrich the soil

• Mulching and organic feeding as ecofriendly care methods

• And yes, propagating your own plants for cost-effective, gratifying growth

The result? A garden that’s not only sustainable and stylish but also a small wildlife sanctuary.

A Lifestyle, Not Just a Hobby

There’s something universally human about gardening. It speaks to a need to nurture, to create, to witness change. And according to the members of The Umhlanga Garden Club, it’s also deeply healing. “It’s your own piece of nature,” one member reflects. “It’s like escaping to another world.”

It’s also a free source of dopamine, a way to share success, and a reminder to always appreciate beauty, even in the smallest bloom. Gardening, they say, is a lifestyle. So find plants that fit your rhythm. A lowmaintenance aloe for the busy worker. A vertical herb garden for the balcony chef. A riot of colour for the weekend wanderer.

And above all, share your knowledge, because every garden starts with a little seed of inspiration.

So are you ready to get your hands dirty? Whether you’re curious or confident, you’re welcome to join the circle. Just bring your love of plants—and maybe a nibble to share.

MY STORY

Discover how Dr Yecintha Naidoo's veterinary practice in Umhlanga is setting new standards in animal care with dedication and passion.

Compassion and careful listening are at the heart of my approach to veterinary care.

Tell us about yourself

Hi, I'm Dr Yecintha Naidoo! As a dedicated small animal veterinarian, I've been committed to helping animals live happy, healthy lives. Beyond my profession, I’m a proud wife and mother to two wonderful teenagers. Our family wouldn’t be complete without our beloved pets—we share our home with five dogs and three cats, who keep life entertaining!

What inspired you to become a veterinarian?

Since childhood, my love for animals has been unwavering. I found joy in comforting them, and by the age of five, I was already set on becoming a veterinarian. To make sure I was on the right path, I spent the school holidays working alongside my community vet— an experience that only deepened my passion.

Can you tell us about your educational background?

While the standard path to earning a Bachelor of Veterinary Science takes six years, mine spanned nine. Due to the post-apartheid quota system, only six Indian students were admitted per year, and it took me three years to secure my place. During that time, I pursued a Bachelor of Animal Sciences, further strengthening my foundation in the field. Once I qualified, I spent a decade working at a remarkable, women-led veterinary practice in Sandton, Gauteng. It was an inspiring environment that shaped my approach to patient care and clinic management. Eventually, I moved to

Umhlanga, where I had the opportunity to purchase my current practice from a fellow vet who was emigrating to New Zealand.

What do you enjoy most about working with animals, and what do you find most challenging?

For me, veterinary medicine isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. I see it as a service to the fur babies who can’t speak for themselves, a chance to build connections with them, understand their needs, and heal them in the process. Animals bring us endless joy and unconditional love, and by caring for them, I also get to support their owners, helping families stay happy and whole.

The toughest moments come when we face cases we can’t save or when we have to gently guide a beloved pet over the rainbow bridge. Yet, as a team, we stand together, supporting one another through the heartbreak so we can keep moving forward, ready to help the next innocent soul in need.

How do you approach difficult or emotional cases?

Compassion and careful listening are at the heart of my approach to veterinary care. No one knows a pet better than its owner,

so I always begin by truly hearing their concerns. From there, I rely on thorough examinations and years of experience to assess each case with precision. At our clinic, we are equipped with state-of-theart diagnostic tools, including blood testing machines, X-rays, and ultrasound, allowing us to accurately diagnose patients. In particularly complex cases, we collaborate with specialist centres around Durban to ensure pets receive the best possible care.

Every decision is made with that guiding principle in mind, working closely with pet parents to determine the most effective course of treatment. Dealing with loss is one of the hardest aspects of veterinary medicine, but we are always here to support our clients through these difficult moments. We walk alongside them in their grief, honouring the deep bond they shared with their beloved pet.

Can you walk us through a particularly memorable case you've worked on?

One of my most unforgettable cases came from the Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT) about six years ago. They brought in a puppy from a

block of flats—her tail had been brutally hacked off. The injuries were devastating, and she was in unimaginable pain. We acted swiftly, anaesthetising her every few days to change her bandages carefully and manage her healing process. She survived against the odds and found a loving home abroad after healing from her wounds. Rebuilding her trust took time and compassion, but animals have beautiful, forgiving souls. This brave little pup will always have a special place in my heart.

Are there any specific areas of veterinary medicine that you're particularly passionate about or have expertise in?

Unlike human healthcare, we work across multiple species, each with its own distinct physiology and disease processes. As general veterinarians, we wear many hats—performing surgeries, administering anaesthesia, conducting radiology, treating oncology cases, and handling emergency care. Lately, I’ve been increasingly drawn to alternative medicine and holistic healing—an approach I believe holds incredible potential for the future of veterinary care.

The Team

At our practice, we’re more than just a team—we’re a family. With a staff of 12, we work closely together to ensure that every pet receives the best care possible. My father, Mr Nanda Naidoo, is a retired financial manager who oversees our accounts. My husband, Mr Reagan Pillay, brings his expertise in project management to handle our building maintenance. He has helped us transition to solar power and implement effective rainwater management, making our practice more sustainable. My practice manager, Shenade Aldworth, is my right-hand woman. She has been running the clinic with precision and care for nearly a decade.

I’m also fortunate to have Dr Monika Seele as my assistant veterinarian. We qualified in the same class and share the deep compassion that comes with both motherhood and veterinary medicine, bringing warmth and love into our patient care. At reception, Jess Dove is always ready to welcome clients, offering expert advice on food and general pet care. Nomkosi, my amazing assistant, keeps everything running smoothly. Our grooming staff and handlers always greet clients with smiles, happy to care for every furry friend that walks through our doors.

Together, we strive to create an environment where pets—and their humans—feel comfortable, supported, and truly cared for.

Celebrating

Our Furry Companions

Do you have an important birthday coming up for your four-legged family member? Pupcakes and Pawties are here to craft the yummiest and cutest cakes!

Celebrating special occasions with your furry family members can be especially emotional. You can see their excitement in their wagging tails and their inability to sit still. They wait impatiently for the go-ahead to have their treats, and blow out their candles. Pupcakes and Pawties is a small business based in Durban North run by a team who are passionate about making every occasion exceptional for furry companions.

The pupcakes they make now began as a search for ideas on what to feed their sick fur baby, Cesar. It had to be healthy and delicious so that it could also hide the medication he had to take. Seeing how much he enjoyed it, his parents shared similar treats with friends and family. During lockdown, these were a welcome indulgence for pets and their humans. With those furry friends hooked, Pupcakes and Pawties was born to bring treats to more fur babies in KZN.

Transitioning from a corporate background into a creative role was a big adjustment for the team, but they now thrive on the colourful freedom of making these treats for clients for their celebrations. Their first cake was for Cesar, who sat quietly during his photoshoot and, once he was given the go-ahead, he devoured every piece! Even though he is no longer with them, having crossed over the rainbow bridge, his presence and memory continue to inspire them.

Making these cakes cute, safe and delicious takes meticulous planning and research. They had to use ingredients and portions tailored to their clients’ requirements and restrictions. Taking into consideration allergies, special diets, portion control and just the pets’ preferences, you can’t give them chicken when lamb is a favourite! Once they got the mix right, they also sent it to a vet to confirm if their products could be given the green light.

Sugar and preservative-free, their products are also safe for humans to eat too!

Once the content was perfected, they got to work on decorating options. They developed techniques to match party themes, favourite colours and toys. The cake is the centrepiece of any party, tying everything together, and each one is made with love, patience and attention to detail. Of course, these cakes don’t always come out perfectly on the first try! In their early days, they received an order for a cake shaped like Thor’s hammer (Mjölnir), and it started off looking like a certain part of the male anatomy no matter what angle you looked at it.

It took some reshaping but they got it right and have since perfected the cake, with it being one of their popular requests! Every order and fur baby is special and memorable in their own way. Pupcakes and Pawties cherish every photo, video, post and review. They strive to match the enthusiasm clients have, coordinating the cakes with costumes and décor.

Thanks to the sup-pawt of their community, they’ve been able to keep doing what they love—and are even exploring exciting new offerings! The team is excited to keep spreading tail wags, tasty bites, and paw-sitive vibes across KZN—one celebration at a time.

COMMAND

Following her passion for safety and people, Noku Meki shares her inspirational journey through her roles and responsibilities becoming a specialist in aviation safety within Airports Company South Africa.

From First Steps to Current Role within ACSA

My current role is Specialist: Aviation Safety, ARFF, and Licenses. It all started with a temporary position in the Customer Care Department at OR Tambo International Airport. When the Fire Department requested a temporary administrator, I volunteered and spent five months in the role, igniting a passion that would define my career path. This newfound interest led me to join King Shaka International Airport in Durban as an Aerodrome Emergency Management Officer (AEMO), a role I held for nine and a half years before transitioning to my current specialist position.

Duties and Memorable

Moments as an AEMO

My primary focus was to prepare the Airport Community (Stakeholders and Staff) to be ready to respond to any emergency that may arise at the airport or its vicinity. This included creating an Emergency Response Plan for the airport, which needs to be approved by the regulator, and testing the plan for adequacy by running aviation disaster simulations at and off the airport. Outside of testing the plan, I had to build

relations with local, district and provincial disaster management authorities to ensure that our plan fits into the bigger disaster management plans for the province and the municipalities we worked with. My most memorable moment was when we ran an air crash simulation at Westbrook Beach off the coast of Ballito in 2018. It was one of the biggest simulations we’ve ever done. Kudos to NSRI and all the other support services that made it unforgettable.

Overcoming Challenges

There were a few, but to mention two major challenges stand out. Firstly, I experienced culture shock, adapting to a new language, people, and mannerisms, including learning to address colleagues by their clan names. This required me to reassess my communication style, shed some habits acquired in Jozi, and refocus on proper speech. Secondly, navigating the new Fire Department as it presented its own set of challenges. Although some might argue that all firefighters behave similarly as if born by the same mother, the new place and the local station lingo were different. I observed staff interactions, socialised with different groups, and discovered cultural nuances, including Durban curry and Isigwaqane, a traditional Zulu dish. This insight enabled me to tailor my approach. By embracing these cultural differences, I was able to build stronger relationships and deliver my work more effectively.

Advice for Young People Entering the Field

Passion and genuine interest in your job will go a long way when the will to carry on is no longer there. Loving your job is one thing, but for an Emergency Management Officer or a Chief Fire Officer who lacks passion for their work, the results can be catastrophic. Firefighters will test your soul and sanity, but if you really enjoy what you do, nothing and no one can deter you, as you are always self-motivated.

State of MindEmpire

Join Umhlanga locals, Sayantha and her husband Kinesh on their New York City adventure as they take in iconic sights, try new things and celebrate a few special occasions!

Takeoff

We celebrated a triple milestone in the Big Apple, combining our honeymoon, my 30th birthday, and a bucket-list New Year's Eve ball drop experience in one unforgettable trip to NYC.

First Impressions

When we got off the plane and into a yellow cab taxi, Alicia Keys' lyrics kept playing in my head: “In New York, concrete jungle, where dreams are made of”. It was literally a dream and a concrete jungle!

It was absolutely beautiful, and to actually witness it in the middle of winter was something else, completely different from the movies! Their winter was extremely cold and our Durban attire —jeans and sneakers with a K-Way jacket—didn’t cut it! We rushed to get some thermal socks and my husband a beanie.

Must-Visit Spots

We definitely wanted to see the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the 9/11 memorial site, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty!

DID YOU KNOW?

The first ball drop occurred in 1907, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition. The ball drop symbolises hope, new beginnings, and the collective anticipation for the new year.

(I don’t have lots of photos because it was so cold we kept our gloves on.)

And of course, we had to go see the Macy’s on Herald Square and pop into a Sephora for a quick restock of my favourites!

The Local Cuisine

We definitely ate a lot of different foods and tried out different fast-food places that we usually saw on TV, but for me, it was the street food that stood out! One particular wrap caught my attention—it was filled with lettuce, shredded chicken, and sauce, and it was absolutely delicious. In fact, it was so good that I sent my husband back to find the vendor the very next day!

A Treasured Memory

Standing in the middle of 42nd street in the freezing cold, while it rained with thousands of people around us, screaming, partying, and counting down the seconds as we were watching the ball drop, bringing in the new year!

Caffé Italia Where Flavour Always Comes First

Caffé Italia sits elevated, overlooking the Indian Ocean with views of the passing ships and clouds on the horizon. Walking into the restaurant feels like coming home for a meal with your family, with its cosy layout and Italian-inspired décor. They have an indoor and outdoor seating area, perfect for taking in the seaview, which is also great for your year-end functions! This owner-run restaurant prides itself on its exceptional service and high-quality meals, bringing people back for more to explore their menu for new dishes or return for their favourite meal.

Settling in, we took a look at their menu for a few starters and drinks. Our friendly waitress, Siya, helped guide us through some of their iconic options. Their extensive menu, suited for both takeaways and a sit-down meal, gave us a lot to think about. For starters, we were recommended the garlic prawn tails and the grilled halloumi bruschetta. Paired with crispy ciabatta and cooked in garlic butter, the garlic prawn tails were a great variation of the snail dish. A low-carb variation of the classic bruschetta and the two slices of halloumi

are served with chopped tomato, red onions, olives and basil—a delicious combination. To complement our starters, we tried some of their signature cocktails. The tequila sunrise, ocean breeze and cheeky grapefruit made for great companions while snacking and enjoying the ambience.

Keeping starters light, we decided to splurge on the main course with a few of their classic and speciality dishes. Hearing about the incredible chef’s special lamb shank gnocchi dish, we knew it had to be on our list. Smoked in the woodoven for roughly 14 hours, the lamb practically melts in your mouth, with the handmade gnocchi being light and fluffy. From their pizza selection, we chose their Trentino pizza. Topped with spicy chicken, balsamic caramelised onions, peppadews and avocado, every bite was memorable. If you’re in the mood for seafood, their fresh linefish options won’t disappoint. We were lucky enough to have the swordfish option during our visit. Wood-oven grilled, topped with herb, garlic and napoletana sauce and served with fresh chips, it was your beloved “fish and chips” combination with flair! And, of course, we couldn’t skip out on the meatball pasta.

The classic spaghetti and meatballs, made with a family recipe, a tomato base infused with fragrant spices, made it a dish with that comforting quality, warming you from the inside. We were absolutely stuffed, but there’s always room for dessert, especially a homemade baked salted caramel cheesecake! Light and crumbly, served with fresh cream and strawberries, it was the perfect end to our experience. It also pairs well with a delicious cappuccino, to balance the sweet with a little bitterness! It was truly a one-ofa-kind experience, and the combination of the amazing team, scrumptious food, and welcoming atmosphere made it unforgettable for us.

Yoga: The Path to Health and Peace

In the pace and pressure of today’s world, peace can feel distant—but if we want to create it outside, we have to begin inside ourselves. That’s the power of yoga. It’s not just a tool for flexibility. It’s a complete system for building physical vitality, mental clarity, and emotional balance.

Yoga offers us something medicine alone can’t: the integration of mind, body, breath, and awareness. It teaches us to become conscious— to move with intention, to breathe with presence, and to embody qualities like patience, compassion, and strength. These qualities don’t just make us better people—they make us healthier ones.

We now know from both ancient texts and modern science that chronic stress is a silent wrecking ball. It impacts everything from digestion and hormones to sleep, recovery, and immunity. But when we practise yoga consistently, we actively recondition the nervous system, bringing the body back into its natural state of healing and equilibrium.

Through breathwork, movement, and mindfulness, yoga strengthens what’s known as the parasympathetic (rest

and digest) system, improves heart rate variability (HRV), and enhances our ability to recover—physically and mentally.

Here’s a simple but powerful breath practise to begin with:

Sama Vritti - “The 5-5-5-5 Method”

• Inhale for five seconds

• Hold for five seconds

• Exhale for five seconds

• Hold for five seconds

Do this for five minutes each morning. Focus entirely on your breath. This practise—known as Sama Vritti or “equal breath”— sharpens focus, balances the

nervous system, and supports deeper sleep, emotional regulation, and improved energy.

As a yoga teacher and wellness professional, I’ve seen time and again how these simple tools change lives. Whether you’re an athlete, a student, or someone simply navigating the stress of modern life, the consistent practise of yoga builds strength and softness, power and peace—not just in the body, but in the way we live.

GOOD HAIR DAYS

Because when we choose presence over pressure, we create health. And when we cultivate peace within, we influence the world around us.

JARED teaches yoga classes, through his daily practise, designed to help people optimise their health, find peace of mind and connect to their hearts—this is the complete opposite of the fastpaced, stressful way most of us live. JaredHolcroft01@gmail.com

She Means Business

Shirley’s story of passion, determination and abundance.

Step aside, boardroom bros, there’s a different kind of leadership in town. She’s wearing heels, and she’s probably already two steps ahead of you. Meet Shirley Pearson, the woman who eats KPIs for breakfast and built her empire with a laugh, a spreadsheet, a team of fierce females and a few brave men!

Shirley's corporate beginnings saw her lead the Industrial Relations Department of the OK Bazaars—back when it was South Africa’s largest retailer— managing more chaos than taxis on the road!

She went on to open her own Industrial Relations and Strategic Management Consultancy, adding training and development, and served as a CCMA commissioner, all while remaining a hands-on mom to her three children. We’re convinced she has a twin. Then, in 2012, Shirley said “yes” to something big—buying an ActionCOACH franchise. In true bosslady fashion, she made the brand her own and expanded it into a firm of coaches, known as ActionCOACH iNala. Today, ActionCOACH iNala is a force to be reckoned with. Working with more than 50 Business owners at any one time. iNala's clients consistently achieve best business

results with many reporting their best trading months ever, even in South Africa's see-saw economy!

What sets Shirley apart isn’t just her razor-sharp business acumen; it’s her passion. She believes that South Africa (and the world) is an extremely abundant place. Every day, she gets up to help and support her clients (and her team) to tap into that abundance.

Focusing on increasing business profits, improving team performance, and most importantly, ensuring that her clients’ businesses serve them. Shirley’s mission is to support and enable businesses to scale. She believes that for people to live meaningful and dignified lives, they need to be able to have the opportunity to be part of and contribute to a stable economy. Privately owned businesses are the most dynamic and agile contribution to a stable economy

and can provide opportunities that corporate and public companies can't. Adding to this, the statistics are clear. Companies with women in leadership roles experience tangible benefits. Businesses with a higher rate of gender diversity are 25% more likely to financially outperform their counterparts. Empowering women economically is not just about fairness, it’s a strategic move that impacts families, communities and overall economic growth.

This Women’s Day, we raise a glass of bubbly to Shirley Pearson and her courageous, brilliant band of businesswomen. Because who says you can’t rule the boardroom and laugh so hard you smudge your mascara?

She’s proof that when women lead with courage, joy, and just the right amount of sass, the world doesn’t just change— it blooms.
