FROM THE PUBLISHER

We start this edition with a sad farewell to the Cotswold Downs estate magazine, as estate management after much deliberation has decided to discontinue the publication. We have been publishing the magazine at no cost to the Estate or its residents, for seventeen years and we will miss being a part of the growth of the Estate. Having been part of the Estate from inception (literally since neighbour No. 1!), we look back at the years fondly, working with the developer and with the first estate manager, Vic Bonsor, with whom we have stayed in contact over the years. We love what we do, we love telling stories and being part of all things KZN!

FROM THE CEO LETTER

As we move forward into 2026, we believe that exceptional facilities are only part of what creates a meaningful lifestyle. What truly elevates an experience at the Leisure Centre is how it makes you feel, the welcome at the door, the consistency of service, and the sense that every visit reflects the standards of a world-class leisure environment.

Moving into the new year, we are proud to introduce the Welcome Home initiative at the Leisure Centre, a renewed commitment to hospitality and guest care across all Leisure Centre touchpoints. From golf, to dining, and events. This initiative is designed to ensure that every resident and member enjoys a warm, seamless and memorable interaction.

This programme brings together our teams behind a unified standard of engagement. It includes structured training, digital learning, experience mapping, and ongoing feedback tools, all aimed at fostering a culture of genuine hospitality and consistent delivery across every aspect of the Leisure Centre. Through this initiative, as a resident, you will be provided with a variety of proactive and deliberate opportunities to provide real-time feedback in helping us elevate the overall experience.

Why is this important? Because lifestyle is one of Cotswold’s greatest assets. When our Leisure Centre feels thoughtful, polished, and welcoming, it strengthens our brand, deepens member pride, and enhances the daily enjoyment of everyone who spends time here. In turn, this contributes meaningfully to the positioning of Cotswold Downs as a premier golf and lifestyle estate, supporting long-term value and desirability for all homeowners.

The Welcome Home initiative is, at its heart, a celebration of who we are: a community that values quality, connection, and the simple joy of belonging. As we roll out this programme, our focus remains clear: to elevate hospitality, enrich experiences, and ensure that every moment at the Leisure Centre feels like coming home.

CELEBRATING THE BUSY SEASON

The festive season at Cotswold Downs Golf Estate is always a special time of year - one filled with family gatherings, holiday cheer, and long summer days spent enjoying the Estate’s worldclass facilities.

With many residents welcoming visiting friends and family, the Estate comes alive with activity, and our championship golf course becomes a central hub for fun, relaxation, and shared memories.

This increase in holiday traffic means that booking your tee times in advance is essential.

The course becomes particularly busy over December and early January, and securing your preferred time helps us manage flow efficiently while ensuring you and your guests enjoy the best possible experience.

We truly appreciate your cooperation during this peak period.

Matkovich and the CLC team have worked tirelessly over the past few months to ensure this year’s spring treatment was executed flawlessly. Their careful planning, long hours, and hands-on commitment have resulted in a course that has bounced back remarkably well.

The fairways have returned to lush, consistent playing surfaces, while the greens are once again rolling true and performing at championship standard. Thanks to their hard work, the course is in excellent condition and fully ready to welcome members and guests for the busy season.

To keep the course beautiful and playing at its best throughout the season, we rely on the support and good habits of our members and residents.

A few simple rules make a world of difference: Pace of Play: With full tee sheets, maintaining a steady pace is more important than ever. Please

As we welcome another year-end at Cotswold Downs, we encourage everyone to enjoy the vibrant, festive atmosphere and make the most of this special time with family and friends.

always keep up with the four-ball ahead of you. This small awareness keeps the course moving smoothly for everyone.

Divots, Pitch Marks & Bunker Care: Course recovery and presentation depend on every golfer doing their part. Please repair all pitch marks, fill your divots using the sand bottles provided, and if you can fix an extra one, even better. Equally important is the raking of bunkers after use; smooth, well-maintained bunkers ensure fair play for the groups behind you and contribute to the high standards our members expect.

Cart Etiquette: Whether you’re using a club cart or a private one, the rules remain the same. Please avoid driving over ropes, stay clear of high-traffic wear areas, and keep carts off green surrounds at all times. These measures protect vulnerable turf and ensure top playing conditions throughout the season.

From all of us here, we wish you a joyful holiday season and a very Merry Christmas to our entire Cotswold Downs family.

Warm Regards,

If you have spent a Friday evening at Churchills Bar, you will know that the music often arrives before the drinks do, thanks to the smooth, soulful voice of waitron and baritone singer, Sabelo Ngcobo. One night, he serves you dinner; the next, he stops guests in their tracks with a Sinatra classic. I sat down with our very own Cotswold Crooner to learn more about the man behind the mic.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Born and raised near Shongweni Dam, Sabelo grew up in a large, close-knit family surrounded by rural life and gospel music. “We were always in church, and there was a lot of singing,” he tells me. His earliest musical step began in the Edamini Primary School Choir in 2008, under the guidance of Vusi Zwane, his music teacher.

Sabelo’s passion for music deepened over the years. In 2019, he began formal voice lessons with Ros Conrad, director of the Durban Symphonic Choir. He still sings for the choir.

MEET OUR COTSWOLD CROONER

A Conversation with Sabelo Ngcobo

His training continues today under renowned vocal coach Sandile Mabaso. Inspired by opera, especially Luciano Pavarotti, Sabelo became a solo performer, participating in major competitions and even winning first place in the eThekwini Eisteddfod adult section in 2019.

A particularly proud moment was representing KwaZulu-Natal at the South African Schools Eisteddfod and later performing a solo at the Mariannhill Monastery, accompanied by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

WEATHERING

THE STORM

COVID-19 slowed his musical journey dramatically. Gigs were cancelled, work hours were cut, and his small fast-food business closed. “I thought I was not going to be able to come back,” he says. The experience reshaped his thinking: “Music alone won’t make me successful. I needed something else - mobile coffee.”

FINDING A HOME AT CHURCHILLS

A friend introduced him to Brian Majola, and

within weeks of joining Churchills, Sabelo approached the owner, Michael Partis, who promised him a chance to perform on Friday nights. The rest is history - and harmony. “For me, singing is a God-given gift. Performing for the community is like giving back,” he says. One of his standout memories was being invited to sing at a SIKA golf day hosted at the club.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MELODY

He describes his musical style simply: “Music for the soul.” His favourite song to perform? “Fly Me to the Moon”. His theme song? “The Impossible Dream”. Outside of work, he enjoys anime and spending time outdoors at home. And his dream? “To open my own coffee shop - and employ musicians only, to give others the same chance I was given.”

A voice, a vision, and amazing talent right on our doorstep - Sabelo is truly one of our own.

Safe, Serene, and Secure: Summer Safety & Security

Keeping It Cool, Calm & Cotswold

Summer has arrived - that wonderful stretch of long sunny days, pool parties, braais, and well-earned relaxation. As we embrace the festive season, there’s a natural shift in energy around the Estate. Families spend more time outdoors, kids take to the streets on bicycles and skateboards, and many residents prepare for well-deserved holidays away. But amidst all the excitement, it’s also the perfect time to pause and think about safety and security.

At Cotswold Downs, we pride ourselves on being one of the safest estates around, but good security is always a shared responsibility. This summer, a few simple measures can go a long way in keeping our community as peaceful and secure as ever.

One of the biggest joys of summer is spending time around the pool. However, with children out and about, water safety must always come first. Supervision is the golden rule - never

leave a child unattended, even for a moment. Make sure your pool gate closes and latches properly, and keep rescue gear such as a pool hook or a floatation device within reach. It’s also important to teach children basic pool manners: no running, no pushing, and no diving in shallow areas. A few moments of awareness can prevent a lifetime of regret and ensure that every splash ends in smiles, not tears.

While we’re talking about open-air fun, it’s worth remembering that summer also brings more open doors and windows, which can tempt opportunistic thieves. Even within a secure estate, it’s wise to avoid leaving valuables visible through windows or on car seats. Phones, wallets, and handbags left near open doors or outside during a braai can disappear in an instant. Keep garages, sheds, and garden gates locked when not in use. A well-secured home is not only a deterrent to potential intruders but also offers peace of mind when you’re relaxing with friends and family.

The Estate comes alive during the holidays, and one of the most delightful sights is children on bicycles and skateboards enjoying their freedom. Still, that comes with responsibility for both parents and drivers. Encourage children to wear helmets, stay visible, and stick to quieter roads or sidewalks. Motorists should take extra care and slow down, especially at corners and intersections. During summer evenings, when visibility drops, reflective gear or bright clothing can make all the difference. Shared spaces mean shared responsibility - and keeping our roads safe ensures that fun and safety can coexist.

If you’re heading away for the holidays, don’t forget about your home’s security. Before you leave, ensure all doors, windows, and gates are properly locked and that your alarm system is on. Inform the security team of your travel dates so patrols can keep an extra eye on your property. Consider setting timers for lights to create the impression that someone is home, and ask a trusted

neighbour to collect any deliveries. Avoid leaving spare keys in obvious hiding spots and remember to store valuables securely. Those staying behind should also remain alert - a watchful community is one of the strongest security measures any estate can have.

Closer to home, summer brings its own set of household hazards. Fire safety is especially important during this windy season. Keep an eye on open flames from braais or fire pits, and make sure coals and ashes are completely extinguished before disposal. Store gas bottles and flammable liquids out of direct sunlight and take a moment to test your panic buttons and alarm systems. Storms and power surges can interfere with equipment, so it’s worth a quick check. And for our furry family members, keep pets safe and indoors during noisy gatherings - frightened animals often try to escape unfamiliar sounds.

Ultimately, the strength of Cotswold Downs lies in our sense of community. Security

isn’t just the job of guards and gates; it’s about neighbours looking out for one another, about awareness, kindness, and care. When residents stay alert, communicate, and take responsibility for their own spaces, everyone benefits.

As the festive season unfolds, let’s all do our part to make sure it’s one of laughter, rest, and good memories - not one of avoidable mishaps. Whether you’re poolside, hosting a summer lunch, or packing up for a beach getaway, take a few simple precautions to keep your family, your home, and our community safe.

From all of us in the Cotswold Downs Security Department, we wish you a joyful, secure, and sun-filled summer. Stay safe, stay mindful, and, as always - stay Cotswold.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Because there’s nowhere quite like Cotswold

There’s something truly special about this time of year at Cotswold Downs. The air feels lighter, the laughter a little louder, and everywhere you look, there’s a sense of celebration.

The year is winding down, schools are out, and families are finally exhaling, ready to rest, reconnect, and soak up the summer sunshine right here at home.

Downs

And that’s exactly what this season is all about: home. Not just the houses we live in, but the feeling we create together, the warmth of familiar faces, the comfort of community, and the joy of knowing you belong.

At Grimaldi’s, we believe in that feeling deeply. Every pizza, every plate of pasta, every glass poured is part of what makes this place feel alive during the festive season. While many are heading to the coast or the mountains, our

dedicated team stays right here, making sure that for everyone spending the holidays at Cotswold Downs, it feels every bit as magical.

From the early-morning kitchen prep to the late-night goodbyes, our staff bring heart, care, and laughter to every table. They are the heartbeat of Grimaldi’s, the smiling faces behind your favourite meals, working tirelessly so that every guest can unwind, celebrate, and feel at home.

So, this festive season, whether you’re joining us for a long lunch with friends, a sunset dinner with family, or a quiet glass of wine on the deck, know that it’s all prepared and served with love by people who call this community home, too.

Here’s to the season of sunshine, good food, and togetherness. Here’s to home.

Welcome to Grimaldi’s. Welcome home.

Meet the Reeds

When I popped in to meet Tayler and Chris Reed, I was greeted by the kind of cheerful chaos that only a happy young family can create - Willow’s giggles drifting down the passage, baby John flashing gummy smiles from his cosy spot, and Charlie the golden retriever trotting around as if he were personally hosting the interview. It was clear from the outset that this family has settled beautifully into life at Cotswold Downs.

A YOUNG FAMILY FULL OF HEART

“Hi, we are the Reeds,” Chris said with a grin. “I am the dad who is always running - literally. Everyone I meet says, ‘You’re the guy who runs!’ One day, I hope to run the Comrades.”

Tayler laughed. “And I am the mum who LOVES living in the thick of it. I am living my dream - being a mum, decorating our home, hosting, gardening, baking … all the fun things.”

Their children, Willow (two and a half) and baby John (almost three months), are the centre of their world. Willow is a confident, free-spirited little wildling who adores her brother, and John - lovingly called “John John” - has slotted into the family with the smiliest temperament imaginable. “And then there is Charlie,” Tayler added, gesturing to their golden retriever. “Willow’s best friend, shadow, and trampoline buddy.”

FINDING HOME AT COTSWOLD DOWNS

The Reeds moved into the Estate in May, and within months, it felt like home. Proximity to family was a major factor. “My mom and brother live here,” Tayler shared. “We are very close, so that played a big role. And then the parks, the pools, the tennis courts, the restaurant, the nature - it all just felt right.”

Their décor blends modern simplicity with meaningful antique pieces. “We want it to be cosy, warm and welcoming,” Tayler said. “Child-friendly and practical, but

still stylish. There is always space to play, create and make the kind of ‘happy noise’ that fills a house.”

LITTLE RITUALS THAT MAKE A FAMILY

The Reeds already have a few special family rhythms. “Pizza Sundays are our favourite,” Tayler said. “Slow, cosy, toppings everywhere, Willow helping with her little hands.”

“And on weekends, if there is rugby on,” Chris added, “you will find us braaing.” Willow now asks, “Where is my Bokke Bokke shirt?”

A daily ritual they treasure is Willow racing to the door to greet Chris the moment she hears his car. “It melts my heart every time,” Tayler said.

A BUSY, OUTDOORSY FAMILY

Chris is often spotted running around the Estate, sometimes with Willow in the pram. “I also love golf - and living on a golf course is very convenient,” he teased.

Tayler enjoys baking (“especially with little helping hands”), and the family loves gardening. “We spend many weekends at the nursery picking plants and herbs,” she said. They also enjoy exploring and travelling whenever they can. Charlie - also known as Charlie Brown, Cha Cha or Charlie Boy - is part of it all. “He and Willow are inseparable,” Tayler smiled. “They potter in the garden, she throws the ball, he rolls on the trampoline with her.”

A HOLIDAY FEELING & A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

“Since the day we moved here, we have said it feels like we are on holiday,” Chris said. “The amenities, the activities, the kids’ facilities - it all makes life incredibly enjoyable.” Their afternoons often include spontaneous playdates. “Two children from down the road come over almost every day,” Tayler shared. “Bikes, snacks, fantasy games, parks, picnics - such a wholesome way to grow up.”

They also enjoy the Estate’s events. “Bok Day was brilliant,” they said. “So festive and well organised.” They loved the Joker Draw evening too. Nature is another highlight. “Definitely animal life - the birds, frogs, snakes, insects, butterflies … there is always something to discover.”

FAVOURITE SPACES & MOMENTS

Early evening walks are a family routine, often ending with a search for golf balls.

Their home has a few beloved spots:

• The herb garden

• The upstairs balcony, perfect for morning tea

• The fireplace lounge, where all the best conversations happen

Decorating John’s nursery and creating Willow’s “big-girl room” were standout projects. “Our home is full of busy, happy noise,” Tayler said. “Kids’ drawings on the fridge, family photos everywhere, and perfectly imperfect things - like our Coricraft chairs that have become Charlie’s muddy spot.”

FAMILY MOTTO, FUN TOUCHES & THE ROAD AHEAD

“Our motto is: home is our happiest place,” they said.

“And as ‘perfect’ as this all sounds,” Tayler added, “our home is the most beautiful kind of chaos.” Their go-to hosting favourites include Boursin salad, potato bake, and peppermint crisp pudding - “all easy peasy!”

Their advice for new residents? “Embrace everything the Estate offers - go to events, use the amenities, make friends with your neighbours.”

And looking ahead? “To make many more happy memories here and watch our children grow up.”

Spending time with the Reeds was a reminder of what makes Cotswold Downs

so special - families who fill their homes with warmth, joy, and genuine connection. It was a privilege getting a glimpse into their everyday life, and we look forward to watching their beautiful family continue to grow here.

YOU’RE A NATURAL-IST!

WORDS THE LIONHEART EXPERIENCE

Imagine being able to get an immediate answer on the identification of any flower, butterfly, or spider just by taking a photo with your phone and selecting a few actions? Imagine being able to contribute like a wildlife scientist, just by walking around your garden or down the road, with your phone or camera? Imagine being the first person in the world to ever photograph a new species?

So, what are we talking about? The best worldwide database for wildlife, and one of the key ways we at The LionHeart Experience document all the fantastic wildlife that we find in Cotswold Downs Estate.

So, what is it and how do we use it? Well, technology has made this so easy. There is an online platform called iNaturalist, one of the world’s most popular

nature apps. It is a social network with a community of over 1.8 million ‘naturalists’ sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. It is a lot of fun. What’s more, by recording and sharing your observations, you’ll create researchquality data for scientists working to better understand and protect nature. It is as easy as taking a picture of a plant, butterfly, lizard, or anything living, and uploading it!

Glenda Walter and her mantis named after iNat

iNaturalist is a free app available on the App Store or Play Store. Simply download the app, create a profile, and start logging your sightings within Cotswold Downs (or anywhere you go, for that matter). You can use it to record your own observations, get help with identifications, or collaborate with others who collect this kind of information for a common purpose - like our Cotswold Downs Estate Project.

Any sightings logged within the Cotswold Downs boundary will automatically be included in the project, which has been set up by The LionHeart Experience. If you need some convincing, here are some cool stories:

In 2019, a 15-year-old student in Texas uploaded a photo of a strange-looking planthopper he’d found in his backyard to iNaturalist. Professional entomologists spotted the post and realised it didn’t match any known species. After examination, it turned out to be entirely new to science, now formally described as Neotibicen sp. nov ., with the young observer credited as the discoverer. The same thing happened to Glenda Walter, a retiree in Australia, who went on a walk and saw a mantis. It was a completely new species. It was then given the name Inimia nat, where the ‘nat’ refers to iNat (the nickname for iNaturalist).

Abigail del Pozo is a student who photographed a butterfly in Ecuador. She uploaded it to iNat, and it turned out to be a new species!

The next story is a classic! Juan de Roux, an architect in Colombia, was visiting his parents in a remote cabin in the cloud forest of the Andes. He saw a strange animal that was stuck in the outside bathroom. He photographed it and uploaded the images to iNaturalist. The scientific community lost their minds. It was confirmed that these were the firstever photographs of the rare Colombian Weasel, known to science from a few

You don’t need to be a scientist to make real discoveries; you just need curiosity, a camera, and iNaturalist!

skins in a museum. Well, as things go, the sightings of the first ever weasel were comical to say the least. Here are the photos that went viral of the #toiletweasel. There are so many of these amazing stories! A single image can literally bring a species “back from extinction” in the scientific record.

So let’s bring it back closer to home. How can we use this in Cotswold Downs?

First and foremost, we want to know exactly WHAT we have, so this is an amazing way to document ALL the biodiversity on the Estate. Once we know WHAT, from a conservation point of view, we can then look at WHAT NOW? And the list of what we can do with this valuable information is endless:

• Do we have endangered species?

• Where do they live?

• Are there biodiversity hotspots/ areas that need the most protection?

• Are there areas with low biodiversity (areas that we need to focus on improving)?

• Do we have invasive alien species? If so, where exactly are they, so we can target and remove them?

• Follow-up assessments - how is the same area doing after two years, five years, 10 years?

Abigail del Pozo and the Corades Yanacocha

ENVIRONMENTAL

The following image shows how much had been observed on Cotswold Downs before The LionHeart Experience joined. A total of 96 observations of 75 species had been documented from the start of iNat until 2023. We then created a project (a border around Cotswold) and have been documenting all that we could from 2023. We currently have an incredible total of 1,722 observations of 617 species!

We at The LionHeart Experience are just two people (and the majority of these records are ours), but we have over 2,000 people living on the Estate. Can you imagine how many observations and species we could get if even 10% of the residents started getting involved? If you look at the map, you will see we also need to fill in the gaps. We spend a lot of time in the greenbelts and along the golf course, but we are lacking data and records from all the gardens. We don’t think we would be very popular if we started sneaking around your gardens to photograph butterflies and shongololos (millipede), so that’s why we need you! Help us turn this whole map into records! We need YOU!

Observations from private properties, even one or two a month, can make a measurable contribution to South Africa’s national biodiversity data.

Just one thing to bear in mind, there are certain species that are best kept a secret, and need protection. For example, we do not share locations of rhinos for obvious reasons. It is helpful to ask an expert which species to avoid sharing locations with, such as orchids, reptiles, cycads, and succulents. We unfortunately have very unscrupulous people who have no issue with poaching species out in the wild.

IN ADDITION TO THE NEW LOOK, COTSWOLD DOWNS HAS ALSO INTRODUCED A WORLD-CLASS FILTERED STILL AND SPARKLING WATER DISPENSER.

THE REVAMP OF THE HIT THE TEE GOLF STORE

The Hit the Tee Golf Store at Cotswold Downs has recently undergone an exciting revamp, giving the Pro Shop a fresh, elegant, and modern new look. The goal was to bring the store in line with the stylish and contemporary feel of the Cotswold Leisure Centre and the overall estate, resulting in a space that golfers and visitors can truly enjoy.

From the moment you walk in, the change is clear. The new design features clean lines, softer tones, and a welcoming layout that feels both modern and relaxed. The clothing shelves, shoe displays, and fixtures have all been upgraded to showcase the top-quality golfing apparel, gear, and accessories available in-store. Every detail was considered to create a space that not only looks great but also makes the shopping and check-in experience smoother and more enjoyable.

WORDS STEPHEN VAN DEN HEEVER

One of the biggest improvements is the new check-in counter. The old setup could get a little tight during busy times, but the new counter has been designed to give golfers more space and allow staff to serve guests more efficiently. The result is a much easier, faster, and friendlier check-in experience - exactly what members and guests deserve when starting their round at Cotswold Downs.

In addition to the new look, Cotswold Downs has also introduced a world-class filtered still and sparkling water dispenser. This new feature allows golfers to refill their bottles with clean, chilled water before or after their rounds. By offering this system, we’ve moved away from single-use plastic bottles and taken another positive step toward being more environmentally friendly. It’s a small but meaningful change that supports Cotswold Downs’ ongoing commitment to sustainability.

The revamp of the Hit the Tee Golf Store has breathed new life into the Pro Shop. It’s now a space that reflects the style and standards of the Cotswold Downs community - elegant, practical, and welcoming. Whether you’re popping in to check in for your game, browse the latest golf apparel, or simply grab a cold drink, the new Hit the Tee experience is designed to make every visit a pleasure.

Meet Chtee & Noel

Sfrom Deerhurst Village

WORDS

CHRIS RADLOFF

ome families carry a gentleness about them, a grounded presence that makes you exhale and settle into the moment. Sitting with Noel and Chantelle, that was exactly the feeling. Calm smiles, meaningful conversation, beautiful views from their patio, and a young husky named Dam-Dam weaving circles of happiness around our chairs.

They are thoughtful, kind, well-rooted people - and the kind who quietly make a place feel like home.

A BLENDED FAMILY FULL OF HEART

“Noel is a Durban boy through and through,” Chantelle told me proudly. He works as a Specialist Surgeon and Surgical Gastroenterologist at Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital,

while Chantelle - originally from Port Elizabeth - has moved through several cities before settling in KZN. She is the Director of a Practice Management Company based in Hilton.

Together, they have five children - aged 10, 12, 16, 18 and 23

- a beautifully blended family with big personalities, shared roots, and a tapestry of cultures and connections tying them together. The younger children stay with Noel and Chantelle during holidays and weekends, filling the home with laughter, pool splashes and long table dinners on the patio.

They moved into Cotswold Downs in March 2025, but have embraced estate living as if it were a long-awaited, perfectly timed chapter.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW

“We were looking for a home in Hillcrest,” Noel explained, “but after seeing Cotswold Downs, we knew immediately. We did not even consider any other estates.” Chantelle smiled at him as she recalled the moment. “The first time we walked in, I knew we had found our home. Noel saw my face light up, and he just knew.”

Warm, earthy interiors reflect their love for simplicity - wooden furniture, natural tones and a soothing palette of neutrals. The house still has room to grow with them, and they hope to fill the walls with curated art and pieces collected from future travels. There is always a soft pool of sunlight somewhere, and always space for the family to gather.

LIVING WELL, AT A GENTLE PACE

Their lives are full, but beautifully balanced. Work is busy, routines are steady, and nature anchors everything.

“We try to walk twice a day, when schedules allow,” Noel said. “It resets us. The husky also insists on it,” he laughed, and Dam-Dam wagged in agreement.

Outdoors is where they thrive, and there are big plans ahead. “We would love to climb Kilimanjaro in the next year or so,” Chantelle shared. Noel enjoys boxing, while Chantelle has completed numerous half marathons and is slowly easing back into running. Their four-legged shadow, Dam-Dam, is now firmly part of the family. Adopted from the Husky Rescue Centre earlier this year, he arrived with sparkle, mischief, emotion … and a lot of fur. “Our world revolves around him now,” Chantelle admitted fondly.

FINDING PEACE, CONNECTION & BELONGING

“What is there not to love?” Noel said thoughtfully, when I asked how they are finding estate life.

After long days, driving through the gates feels like home. The views soften the edges of work, and spotting wildlife on evening walks

brings a kind of quiet joy - duiker, dassies, birds, butterflies. Small but magical moments.

They are still getting to know neighbours, but Halloween cemented something for them. “Kids knocking, laughter at the door, costumes everywhere. It made us feel part of something bigger.” Their favourite rhythm? Long weekend walks with Dam-Dam along the Nkutu Trails, ending at Clementines for takeaway coffee and something delicious. And on the really good days, a sprint through the dog park for DamDam, who seems to have become somewhat of a local celebrity amongst the Estate’s furry residents.

WHERE MEMORIES LIVE

Their patio is the heart of the home - a place where summer lingers, conversations stretch, and children splash happily in the pool. It is where birthdays have been toasted, where meals have been shared, and where blended family becomes simply family. Theirs is a home of layered culture, shared history, and new beginnings - and those who walk through their door feel that warmth straight away.

MOTTO, FLAVOURS & FAVOURITE MOMENTS

Their philosophy for life is as gentle and powerful as they are: “Be kind - you might be the reason someone holds on.” They follow a plant-based diet, but entertaining is an art they have perfected for guests who enjoy meat. Noel’s Butter Chicken and Chantelle’s fillet steak on the braai have earned a reputation of their own. Theirs is a family that cooks generously, loves wholly, and gathers deeply.

LOOKING AHEAD, WITH OPEN HANDS & FULL HEARTS

Their hope for the future is simple: To keep living fully here. To

keep finding joy in the everyday. To make memories with children, grandchildren, friends and four-legged family, and one day, to retire here, in a place that already feels like home.

Meeting Noel and Chantelle was a reminder of the kind of grounded, authentic people who quietly shape the heart of our Estate. Their warmth, kindness and gentle approach to life radiate through every part of their story, and it is families like theirs who make Cotswold Downs feel like more than a place to live, but a place to belong. We are grateful to have them as part of our community and look forward to watching their family continue to create memories here for many years to come.

Nature’s Living

My journey with orchids began a few years ago when I gifted my wife orchids on special occasions. Over time, friends and family added to our collection. Some of those gifted plants are still going strong seven years later, blooming year after year - beautiful, living reminders of those moments. Most people are familiar with the Phalaenopsis , the brightly coloured orchids often seen in grocery stores, doctor’s rooms, restaurants, and weddings. These elegant plants are the most widely recognised type and are usually where people begin their orchid journey, as I did. They’re easy to love: beautiful, stylish, long-flowering, and often lightly fragrant. With a little care and the right environment, their blooms can last for months.

But the world of orchids stretches far beyond the common “Woolies Phal.” Orchids are one of the largest and most diverse plant families on the planet, with thousands of species and hybrids to discover, each with its own charm and growing needs. Some orchids smell like chocolate, such as Oncidium “Sharry Baby”. Others, like Dracula simia, resemble tiny monkey faces. The Cattleya gigas produces giant, fragrant flowers, while Paphiopedilums have such intricate shapes that they look unreal. Orchids can be small enough to sit in the palm of your hand or large enough to steal the spotlight in any room.

In nature, most orchids grow as epiphytes, clinging to trees with bare roots in humid forests - no soil needed. Our familiar Phalaenopsis is one of

these. Others are terrestrial, growing in the ground. Some enjoy bright light, others prefer shade. Some like it moist, others thrive when left to dry out between waterings. With the right match, many orchids can thrive indoors, on a sunny windowsill, shaded patio, or even mounted on a tree in your garden. At first, the variety can seem overwhelming, but that’s part of the magic - there’s always something new to learn. For beginners, one of the best ways to get started is by joining a local orchid society.

The Natal Orchid Society (NOS) meets every third weekend of the month in Durban North. Meetings are open to the public for a small entry fee, or you can join as a member and enjoy added benefits. These gatherings offer demonstrations on orchid care, talks by experienced growers, and even outings to see wild orchids in their natural habitat. Vendors often attend, selling interesting and rare plants, along with expert advice.

One highlight of every meeting is the plant table - a showcase of blooming orchids brought in by members. It’s a feast for the eyes and a great way to see what’s possible in your own growing space.

Orchid growing is more than a hobbyit’s a rewarding, social, and endlessly fascinating experience. Whether you care for one plant or many, orchids can bring joy, colour, and life into any home.

They’re easy to love: beautiful, stylish, longflowering, and often lightly fragrant. With a little care and the right environment, their blooms can last for months

The Quandary........ Open Mandate or Sole Mandate?

Hello, I’m Jason

The meaning of an exclusive sole mandate versus an open mandate. known as an exclusive mandate, means you authorize only one estate agent or agency to market your mandate means that multiple agents or agencies will be able to market your home. When you see multiple advertisements posted for the same home, it’s usually because the seller has provided an open mandate.

Local Real Estate Specialist

Should you sign a sole mandate? Yes, and here’s why... quality over quantity. It may seem intuitive that more agents marketing your properties mean more them. However, that is not the case. One of the greatest myths amongst sellers is that the more working on their property, the higher their chance of selling the property, quickly. The truth is, that in time, there is only one pool of buyers searching for property. If your property is priced correctly, the buyer will invariably end up with your chosen agent.

I’m family-oriented and a happy waterfall resident with a passion for property. It would be an honour to represent your home should you find yourself changing from one address to another.
