ach year, this edition carries a little more focus and turns the spotlight, just a little more, towards the men of Umhlanga.
This isn’t about dividing lines or drawing circles too tightly. It’s about recognising the roles many men play quietly in our communities—the fathers, brothers, husbands, coaches, mentors, business owners and community-builders in all their forms. For those who lead with purpose, those still finding their way, and those somewhere in between.
To the men who already carry their share with strength and heart, this letter is a nod of respect. You are seen, and your contribution is truly valued and matters. And to those who perhaps haven’t quite yet recognised their place or value—I hope something in this edition helps you see it, or at the very least, shows you that the rest of us do; not in a loud or performative way, but with a deeper realisation that you’re part of the amazing community of Umhlanga. Your presence in your home, your business, your friendships, your community—it counts more than you might think.
I love that we’ve covered stories in this edition that introduce you to men who lead quietly, serve boldly, and dream loudly. You’ll read about Josh Klynsmith, who opens up about music, emotion, and timing. You’ll meet Gordon Reid, a man who turned a health scare into a purposedriven journey of endurance and impact.
And in The Dad Diaries, you’ll hear from local fathers reflecting on the chaos, humour, and
deep meaning of parenthood. Together, these stories offer a textured picture of masculinity— grounded in character, evolving with intention, and, most of all, deeply human.
Over the years, you’ll have come to know I’m a fan of the dynamics and the game of rugby. I love that it reflects the essence of something we all believe in: life is richer when it’s ‘played’ as part of a team. Some days we’re charging forward, other days we’re passing wide, looking for a gap—and sometimes we’re sprinting back in defence when there’s a break in our line. I’ve also come to realise that the best games aren’t won by individual brilliance, but by a team that understands the value of unity. It’s when everyone—on and off the field—plays their part, trusts one another, and leans into their unique strengths that something greater unfolds. That’s when we’re reminded we were never meant to do this alone.
So here’s to the men of Umhlanga—may you see your worth, play to your strengths, embrace those around you and always remember that the team is right here with you.
Till our next edition,
God Bless

WORDS ANNIE BYRNE
Your relationship with yourself is the most foundational relationship in your life. If you dare to embrace yourself fully and wholeheartedly, you dare to change every other relationship for the better. Have you ever considered getting to know yourself better through the lens of dating? This may seem a little strange at first but I dare you to open your mind to the concept. When you nurture a deep, loving bond with yourself, you stop abandoning your own needs, peoplepleasing, and settling for crumbs from others. You begin to show up in your friendships and partnerships, and work from a place of wholeness. This isn’t about replacing romantic love—it’s about enhancing it because when your relationship with yourself is strong, everything else aligns more authentically.
So, how do you begin?
Notice Your Inner Voice
Have you ever stopped to consider how you talk to yourself? Who is in charge—your inner critic or a kind bestie? Practise gently rewiring your inner voice with empathy and self-compassion.
Acts of Service (for you, by you)
Think about how you would show up for someone you love and start doing the same for yourself. Cook your favourite meal, clean your space with love, book the massage. These small acts whisper: “I’ve got you.”
Quality Time
Take yourself on novelty-filled dates that spark joy and curiosity:
• A new art exhibit
• Paddleboarding for the first time
• Sunset picnic and a book
• Journaling in a new café
Explore Intimacy with Yourself
Intimacy isn’t just physical—it’s emotional presence and honesty with yourself. Create rituals that help you feel connected: Give yourself permission to explore your likes and dislikes and practise self-acceptance in these moments.
Practise Consent & Respect
Treat yourself with the same care you'd offer a partner. Listen to the cues of your body and learn to honour your own boundaries and desires.
Boundaries with Compassion
Don’t be afraid to say “no”. Log off, rest, unfollow, and realign when you need to. Respect your own rules and practise gentle discipline as a form of self-love.
Open the Chat
Journaling or voice-noting with yourself can help you hear yourself clearly. Get curious about yourself, ask meaningful questions, express your deepest truths and hold space for your feelings.
Dating in 2025 may be a bit of a minefield but dating yourself doesn’t have to be. The relationship you have with yourself is one you can always come back to—nurture it, enjoy it and be open to meeting new parts of yourself along the way.
Spending time alone is not the same as intentionally spending time with yourself. ANNIE is a wife and mother of two daughters. She supports women by practising online as an Integrative Holistic Counsellor.

“Enabling our clients to live out the hopes and dreams they attach to their wealth drives our approach at Citadel,” says Nic Horn, Citadel Director and Regional Head in KwaZulu-Natal.
Securing and growing wealth so that our clients can choose their dreams requires a deep understanding of them and the markets. Part of understanding the markets is knowing which trends are impacting the market and the way people want to invest. Citadel Advisory Partner, Clare Ramsay, says, “There are four key trends that are impacting the way we invest for our clients.” She lists them as technology, externalisation of wealth, wealth transfer and relationships. Although none of these are new trends, she says, they are deeply embedded in the way we manage wealth.
Clients are looking for technology to enhance their investment outcomes while keeping their information safe. Horn says, “Technology is an enabler for us. It makes our processes quicker and enables us to implement our solution per client in realtime in a very dynamic environment.”
“Diversifying wealth with a global portfolio is becoming increasingly important for local investors," says Ramsay. She explains that all South Africans can effectively take R11 million offshore annually, subject to certain approvals.
Horn says, “Diversification is a risk mitigation strategy that means holding assets, in a portfolio, that behave differently given the same set of circumstances. It is not about transferring money abroad for the sake of it; it is about ensuring that you minimise risk while maximising global investment opportunities.”
Wealth transfer to beneficiaries beyond your lifetime is about ensuring that wealth is protected for future generations, but it goes beyond that. Horn explains, “Estate planning is about making sure that everyone is cared for at a time of their greatest emotional and financial vulnerability. It means life can continue when you are no longer around to provide.”
Horn says, “Citadel clients still want to have a conversation with their advisor.
They want someone who can hold their hand through an increasingly multifaceted financial journey. It is our role to turn the complexity of the financial markets into practical simplicity.”
Citadel has put relationships at the centre of its strategy for over 32 years. It is for this reason that the company has more than R107 billion assets under management and a client retention rate of above 99%.
Ramsay explains that while Citadel is first an investment advice company, it is backed up by a leading and acclaimed in-house asset management team, and a vertically integrated structure supplies a holistic financial solution to clients. Citadel’s services include investment advice, asset management, fiduciary, foreign exchange and treasury, investment administration and philanthropy. “It is about meeting the needs of our clients at every point on their wealth journey,” she says.

Immerse yourself in the world of style and creativity as we shine a spotlight on visionary designers and the art of bespoke tailoring, celebrating the perfect blend of heritage, culture, and elegance.
Story Behind the Stitch
As a third-generation tailor, tailoring runs deep in my veins. My grandfather, Ellan Narainsamy, founded Narainsamy Tailors in 1960, building a reputation for discipline, integrity, and quality. My father, Mike Narainsamy, later established Mike's Tailors,
refining his skills in the UK and developing a passion for fine fabrics and design. I joined the family business at 14, learning invaluable lessons from both my grandfather and father—wisdom I’ll always treasure. In 2016, I founded KNS Tailors. My experience in the family business, participating in South
African Fashion Week, and working with diverse clients set the foundation.
Fashion is the most personal form of expression—it’s how we introduce ourselves without saying a word. Trends come and
go, but style is about confidence and individuality. We craft bespoke garments tailored to your unique shape and personality, using the finest fabrics and trims. When you wear a KNS suit, the confidence that shines through is truly powerful, connecting you with yourself and the world. The moment a client puts on a KNS suit and smiles in the mirror, the confidence that shines through is truly powerful.
I always look to the past for inspiration— particularly the elegance of the 1950s. There was a refinement and attention to detail in that era that still resonates with me today. Whether it’s through vintage fashion, cultural traditions, or the personality of a client, I let the idea come naturally, blending timeless tailoring with personal expression. Staying inspired means staying honest. We take the long road to ensure every client gets the best, no corners cut.
In 2008, my father, brother, and I showcased our work in a fashion show for the first time. We were just three guys from Durban—not sure what to expect. But to our surprise, the show was a hit, and we gained recognition for our work. That moment showed me that authenticity always stands out. You don’t have to fit into the fashion world—you just have to show up as yourself. My advice to aspiring designers? Be the best version of you. The world doesn’t need another copy.
Mzansi is a celebration of our diversity. I see it as a vibrant fusion of tradition, culture, and colour—each person telling a story through what they wear. For me, it’s about keeping things polished and rooted in heritage. I work with quality fabrics that are both comfortable and luxurious. The designs are clean, striking, and thoughtful—allowing my clients to express their personality while looking refined and elegant.
Bespoke tailoring has stood the test of time, and we’re committed to preserving
its authenticity. At KNS Tailors, we’re expanding our reach—slowly entering the Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein markets. The goal is simple: bring bespoke tailoring to the nation, one suit at a time. Growth for me isn’t about getting bigger—it’s about getting better. Better quality. Better service. Better experiences for our clients.
Kuben Narainsamy is the founder of KNS
Tailors and a proud third-generation tailor from Durban. With decades of family legacy behind him and a deep love for refined craftsmanship, Kuben has become known for his dedication to quality and personalised design. His brand, KNS Tailors, continues to grow nationally— offering clients a chance to create garments that feel as good as they look.
Growing up in 1980s South Africa influenced my design aesthetic, characterised by bold, bright colours and eclectic patterns. My South African and Indian heritage inspires my collections, while family values and cultural traditions shape my attention to detail and craftsmanship. These elements combine to create designs that reflect my roots and heritage.
Fashion enables self-expression, cultural exchange, and empowerment. Get Elevated contributes to this conversation by celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity. Our brand prioritises community engagement and social responsibility, aiming to inspire confidence, individuality, and cultural appreciation.
I draw inspiration from culture, nature, art, and everyday life. Recently, the corals of Seychelles' seabed inspired my latest collection. I stay inspired through research, attending fashion events, and experimenting with new techniques. My passion for social justice also influences my designs and commitment to empower women.
For "Marvels of Mzansi," I would incorporate South Africa's natural wonders into bold prints and statement accessories. The fabrics would come alive with earthy tones and vibrant hues, paired with modern silhouettes that blend elegance and playfulness. Each design would be a testament to South Africa's stunning beauty and rich diversity.
Get Elevated's future involves expanding our collection, exploring sustainable materials, and entering new markets. Our focus will be on community-driven initiatives, socially responsible practises, and pioneering designs that celebrate individuality through fashion. Our goal is to make a lasting impact in the fashion industry while staying true to our values and heritage.
Deven Hurku, the founder of Get
Elevated, is a ladieswear brand that celebrates African and Indian heritage. Her designs aim to empower women to feel confident and beautiful. With a boutique and international exposure, Get Elevated showcases stunning Afro-Indo fusion collections.
She is driven by a passion for innovation, merging timeless traditions with contemporary elements to create truly unique and modern designs.
@devenhurkusa
Growing up in a Seventh-day Adventist home has greatly influenced my upbringing, instilling in me a strong sense of identity as a Christian. Consequently, my mother would always ensure that my little sister and I were well-presented. On Saturday mornings, she would dress me in pants, shirt, and tiean amalgamation that made me feel confident and poised. Upon entering university, I underwent a significant transformation in how I perceive, feel, and breathe the fashion world. As a result, my approach to fashion has evolved, and I am continually adapting to trends that are considered the norm, while also redefining the traditional gentleman's image.
The role of fashion in society lies in its ability to reflect diverse cultural perspectives and styles, rooted in our heritage. Our forefathers have gifted us with an understanding of how tradition can inspire and inform design fundamentals, even in a diluted form. Within the fashion community, we see our brand as being mysterious and stylish, proclaiming luxury as you walk the ground of Earth.
My inspiration is drawn by different entities that capture my prolonged attention, which I bestow upon myself. Crafting an ensemble for our collective various platform portfolios is where the process begins, and everything else turns to gold. I stay inspired by believing in something that I envision will be a valuable asset for future sales.
July
Interpreting the Durban July theme
correctly, I would draw inspiration from a Bridgeton-themed outfit. The textile fabric of choice would be Jacquard black fabric, featuring a black patch on the clavicle area with gold trimming. To add an extra touch, I would create gold straps to adorn the clavicle area and design a saddle-inspired element that symbolises a horse. A unique addition would be the incorporation of an Umqhele, commonly known as a headband, adding a distinctive flair to the overall design.
Our brand has received an overwhelming amount of love and acceptance from our discerning and prestigious clients. As a result, we plan to expand our global reach over the next five years, striving for greatness. The consistent referrals from our clients, coupled with our unique designs,
demonstrate our success—people continually seek transformation, and we are where the magic happens.
Awakhiwe Kona, an Actuarial Specialist, is the visionary behind Suitability, a lifestyle brand founded in 2016. Suitability began as a bespoke suiting brand, specialising in customtailored suits. Over time, it has evolved into a group of subsidiaries with interests in fashion, male grooming, and hospitality. The brand's name originates from his actuarial studies, specifically the concept of "Suitability of a Model" in Stochastic Modelling. This term resonated with the idea of tailored clothing designed to fit its purpose, inspiring the brand's identity.

Aesthetic Options is leading the way in integrative men’s health - no stigma, just science and self-care.
By Dr Francois & Dr Vincent Ehlers – Aesthetic Options
Let’s talk about something important, gentlemen. Your mojo. Your prime Your aura. You know—that magnetic energy that turns heads, closes deals, and makes you feel like you’re the apex version of yourself.
At Aesthetic Options, we believe men deserve to feel sharp, confident, and resilient at every age. That’s why we’ve designed an evidence-based, stigma-free approach to health optimisation across four key domains: hair, hormones, peptides, and performance.
Hair loss affects over 60% of men by the age of 40. But we’re here to tell you it’s not your fate—it’s a fixable feature. Whether you’re battling a receding hairline or a thinning crown, we offer tailored solutions ranging from FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplantation to powerful medical therapies like oral finasteride and minoxidil, or topical blends compounded with growth factors and peptides.
“Hair restoration isn’t about vanity,” says Dr Vincent. “It’s about identity. Your hair is part of your presence, your confidence, your aura.”
Peptides are the unsung heroes of modern medicine. These small protein chains communicate with your body to trigger regeneration, repair, and fat burning— without the side effects of more aggressive interventions.
For anti-ageing and vitality, we use CJC1295 + Ipamorelin, a dynamic duo that boosts natural growth hormone release. For injury recovery or that persistent gym niggle, BPC-157 and Thymosin Beta-4 are game-changers—accelerating healing and reducing inflammation. And if weight management is your battle, Tirzepatide and Semaglutide help crush cravings and support sustained fat loss.
“Think of peptides as secret agents,” says Dr Francois. “They work behind the scenes to help your body operate like it did 10 years ago. It’s not magic. It’s biochemistry with benefits.”
Low energy, brain fog, reduced libido, belly fat—sound familiar? These are all signs of androgen decline. We offer carefully monitored testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to restore vitality, improve lean muscle mass, and supercharge motivation.
“With hormone balance, men can return to their apex state,” Dr Vincent explains. “It’s not about becoming someone new, it’s about returning to who you’ve always been.”
Our protocols are tailored, evidence-based, and regularly monitored to keep you feeling sharp, focused, and strong without the crash.
Let’s drop the stigma—erectile health is real
health. The P-Shot, or Priapus Shot, uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to rejuvenate penile tissue, improve blood flow, and enhance performance and sensation.
“It’s not about dysfunction, it’s about optimisation,” says Dr Francois. “Whether you’re 35 or 65, the goal is simple: better confidence, better connection, better sex.”
At Aesthetic Options, we’re not selling you a fantasy. We’re offering tools to help you step back into your power—fully, confidently, and unapologetically. If you’re ready to reclaim your aura, reawaken your mojo, and live in your prime—we’re here to help.
You’re not past your peak. You’re just getting started.
A few local fathers give us a peek into everyday life and special moments with their little ones.
Funniest Moment
I would have to take a while to think about this one, but they are generally funny kids, always saying something you won’t expect.
Unexpected Skill
Having to keep up with the times we live in with the fast-paced, ever-changing social media and the internet.
Best Part Of The Day
Dinner time, watching TV, and talking about their day's adventures.
Advice
Parenting the second kid is going to be harder than the first!
Most Rewarding “Dad Moment”
When your kids ask you how you know so much about stuff.
What I Hope My Kids Always Remember
That we did everything we could to have a fun, balanced life, and that their parents were present and active.
Balancing Family & Work
Take the time to talk and play with them. Set aside a certain time to be one-on-one with them and let them know how much you love them as much as possible.
The funniest thing about him is actually happening in this season of his life. His mom occasionally calls him “baby”, so one day, while we were shopping, Lino decided to walk up to random strangers and call them “baby”!
I wouldn’t say unexpected, but possibly underrated for me, had to be emotional intelligence. The responsibility of the amount of roles one has to fulfil calls for emotional intelligence. Each role needs my appropriate response and consideration, one moment I am Dad, then husband, entrepreneur, friend, brother, son, etc.
"My best part is coming home. No matter what type of day I had, I know Lino is going to celebrate and be happy for the fact that I’m back home."
My best part is coming home. No matter what type of day I had, I know Lino is going to celebrate and be happy for the fact that I’m back home.
When others give you advice, eat the meat and spit the bones. It’s a metaphor my mentor used to say to us, which means take what works from anyone’s advice based on your unique life and leave out what doesn’t.
It will sound cliché, but it’s really the life that I live, the fact that having my own family and our son is an answered prayer. He is really a beautiful and blessed reward from God to me.
I hope he always remembers my love, my intentional presence, and teachings.
Well, I don’t know about secret hacks, but I can tell you what works for us right now. We do our best to build a routine. My wife and I are both in business, so it gets hectic, but we found a routine that helps us prioritise each other and our family.
Every two months, we take short breaks as a family. We are also grateful to have friends who are family-oriented which helps with our family vision.
Funniest Moment
With my girl, almost two, there’s some amusement for us every day. One of the things that always makes us laugh is her facial expressions! They are just too cute!
Unexpected Skill
How to do a poop explosion nappy change! Oh man, those are deadly! I’ve become skilled in that department, and I handle it like a pro now. Haha!
Bedtime routine. It's our special bonding time! From bath time to bedtime stories, we play and imagine adventures together, and I get to see her imagination grow.
Advice
To cherish the moments, even the chaotic ones, because they grow up fast. Enjoy the journey, rather than stress about perfection.
Most Rewarding “Dad Moment”
Watching her grow every day is rewarding. The sense of pride and accomplishment on their face when you see your baby learn something new is incredible.
The countless laughter-filled moments and adventures we shared. I hope she remembers me as a fun, supportive, and loving dad.
Balancing Family & Work
Prioritising family is important. Even small moments, like having dinner together or play time before bed, can make a big difference. Setting boundaries between work and personal life helps maintain that balance.
When Kyla was three-years-old, we thought ballet would be a great idea… until we arrived at class and found her asleep in the middle of the dance floor, with her school bag still on her back, while the rest of the class danced around her. That was the day we realised ballet probably wasn’t for her!
As for Jordan, when he was around age four or five, he repeated a swear word. We warned him that if he said it again, he’d have to take a teaspoon of hot sauce. Of course, he tested us, and we had to follow through. He took it like a champ and then said, “Can I have some of that sauce on my food for dinner?”
Definitely ninja skills—being stealthy, fast, and always alert. You never know what they’re up to, so you have to be ready for anything!
Taking them to school every morning. It’s our time to chat, laugh, and for me to check in on what’s going on in their lives. I love seeing them off happy—well, most of the time! Dinner time is also sacred in our house. No phones allowed at the table, and it’s our chance to reconnect and talk about the day.
Something I wish someone told me is just how much money kids require! Between daily expenses and school fees, it adds up fast!
One that really stands out is a tradition I have with my daughter. Every year, I take her out the night before her birthday, just the two of us. She gets to pick any restaurant she wants, we both dress up to the nines, and we go out on a “date.” It’s our special time together, and seeing how much she looks forward to it each year makes it incredibly rewarding.
Similarly, I've had the pleasure of sharing adventurous experiences with my son. We spent hours exploring the Kamberg area on a motorbike ride. I wasn’t sure he’d be able to handle some of the more difficult sections, but he showed remarkable grit and determination. Eventually, we stopped beside a peaceful dam and had lunch together. It was a day filled with adventure, resilience, and connection—an experience I’ll always treasure.
I hope they remember the sense of adventure we shared, the laughter, and the quality time spent together—whether on the motorbike, surfing, at the dinner table, or just talking about life. I hope they carry with them the feeling that they were truly loved, supported, and never alone.
It’s not always easy, but I try to be fully present wherever I am. When I’m at work, I focus on work—but when I’m with my family, I make a conscious effort to unplug and give them my full attention.
With a reimagined interior and curated additions, The Chefs’ Table steps into a sophisticated new era.
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
Luxury dining in Umhlanga recently got a breath of fresh air at The Chefs’ Table. Building on the already exceptional quality synonymous with the restaurant, they have revamped the interior and introduced a whole new bar menu, amongst other additions and improvements.
When The Chefs’ Table opened in 2016, the original concept was to create a theatrical experience around an open-plan kitchen where qualified chefs would wow patrons, displaying the art of cooking. Staying true to that concept, the chefs curated the original menu around seasonal meals, using fresh local ingredients. While keeping
that vision, they have recreated and extended their menu offering without compromising the initial design.
Executive Chef Mathew Armbruster explains how he expanded the main menu and introduced the bar menu, which still uses the techniques and quality the restaurant is known for.
Steak lovers will be pleased to know that the offering has expanded, with premium, dry-aged cuts sourced directly from trusted local farmers. Chef Mathew has built personal relationships with each of them, working closely to ensure the produce reflects the restaurant’s vision and standards.
This farm-to-table approach is something they take seriously. Every ingredient on the menu is local and seasonal, and that commitment is reflected in every plate. With a steady supply of fresh seafood, the menu has also grown to include elevated
coastal dishes—think whole rock-cod, crayfish, and of course, the signature octopus. A curated range of sides and refined sauces enhances the overall dining experience, offering greater variety and appeal to a wider range of patrons.
They have expanded but haven’t changed the quality of ingredients and attention to detail in every dish, which sets them apart in the Umhlanga food scene. An especially unique element they have introduced is finishing food in the wood-burning oven, giving creations like the octopus an amazing aroma and
caramelisation all kissed by wood and flame for that unmistakable depth of flavour. The sophisticated fine dining options are still available, curated with garnishes that complement the main ingredients and add more finesse, dishes and experiences The Chefs’ Table is well-known for. Interior and décor-wise, the restaurant aesthetics have been softened, making the space lighter and great for lunch dates or business meetings during the day. At night, the new table accents make it an
elegant setting for dinner and special celebrations. A beautifully appointed Private Dining Room also offers guests a more intimate setting—ideal for special celebrations or discreet business meetings. One of the most noticeable physical changes to the restaurant has been in the bar area.
They have created an inside-outside setting with couches and cocktail tables offering a relaxing social atmosphere to enjoy the Umhlanga nightlife while sipping on delicious cocktails. The guest experience is further elevated by an award-winning wine list, with their knowledgeable
sommelier, Karl Rohlandt, ready to guide guests through thoughtful pairings. A resident mixologist, Shaun Cooper, adds another layer to the experience, crafting cocktails that highlight seasonal ingredients and premium spirits with the same care and creativity found in the kitchen.
The Chefs’ Table may look different, but it remains the same beloved restaurant we’ve all come to love. Through the newly revamped space, the restaurant conveys an air of welcome for its loyal patrons and for those looking to try something new. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner space or a lighthearted lunch with friends, The Chefs’ Table invites you to step inside and experience their amazing food and excellent service.

Local musician Josh Klynsmith talks music, releasing a solo record and his inspirations.
WORDS CRISTINA GOVENDER
PHOTOS LEON STRYDOM: SLOW BURN MEDIA
When I listen to music, I love listening to each component that makes up the song. From the bassline to the hidden meanings in the lyrics. Every song is like a story to unravel. So, listening to“Rescue Me" by local musician Josh Klynsmith, the song evoked strong feelings in the listener through its blend of soulful lyrics and a sweeping melody.
Going into music was a natural progression for Josh. He was exposed to music and playing instruments at a young age while growing up in a musically inclined home, “I started playing drums from the age of 10 and was playing in my first little band by age 11,” Josh explains. With music engrained in him, it’s the only thing he could ever see himself doing, following his calling, he studied music at UKZN for five years after high school. During this time, he
also formed a band with his brother and two friends, “We formed a “side project” band called Gangs of Ballet. We got to do some amazing things and travel all over the place to play shows,” he recalls. This band grew to be their full-time job for a few years as they toured together! “Around 2015, I met Matthew Mole at a show. We were playing the same line up together and we became good friends,” Josh reminisces. Soon after, Matthew asked him to tour with him as his drummer which Josh is currently doing.
Being so involved in music for most of his life, Josh has written and composed songs, with the goal of releasing one in his solo career. “I’ve never given it too much focus. It was only very recently (with a push from Matt) that I decided 2025 was going to be the year I gave the solo venture a real swing,” Josh elaborates. This determination paved the way for
“Rescue Me" to be brought to life! Like all good things, this record also took time to come together. “Some songs just fall onto the page in a matter of minutes and then others are a bit of a journey. “Rescue Me" was written over the course of four years,” he recalls. Josh composed the verses during the pandemic while living in Sri Lanka. “I loved the verses but just could not find the right chorus to live with them, so I kinda just pushed pause on it.” Then, living in South Africa again, the chorus finally came to him last year and in the place where most of us get inspired—the shower! The song took a while to come into itself but Josh wanted the timing to be right since a big theme for the song is finding the right timing. “Back when I wrote those verses I (like most people) had no idea what my life was going to be or where I was going,” he says.
For Josh,“Rescue Me" is meant to be a reminder to keep faith that everything will work out how they are supposed to even when the situation may seem hopeless at the time, “I would love it if this song could
"I would love it if this song could give hope to someone who is maybe in a bit of a hopeless headspace”
give hope to someone who is maybe in a bit of a hopeless headspace.”
Drawing inspiration from his own feelings and experiences, there is no strictly defined genre you could place Josh’s music in, “I never really know how to describe the sound of my music but I guess it would be described as alternative,” he expresses. “I think the best songs are the ones that make the listener feel what the writer was feeling.” Even in “Rescue Me", both acoustic and electronic elements give it a unique sound that blends with the lyrics.
“If I was to pick one instrument as the kind of hero it would have to be the piano. There is a lot happening around that piano but I think if I muted all the other instruments and just left the piano and vocals, I think it would still maintain the integrity of the song,” he elaborates.
So, now that Josh has opened himself towards composing solo records, what’s next? “I’ve been fortunate to do a couple of tours along the Garden Route and in some of the major cities but this being a new venture for me means I still have so many
shows to play in South Africa,” he says. While the immediate goal is to continue touring locally, he also has a goal to play on some international stages, “Last year, I played two shows in Europe and I would really love the opportunity to tour there again at some point!” he exclaims.
If you haven’t yet, give “Rescue Me" a listen—you might just find a piece of your own story in its melody. My Spotify already has it on a few playlists!

A husband, father, and everyday man turned adversity into action and continues to inspire with every kilometre he runs. Twelve years ago, Gordon Reid’s life looked very different. But five operations in one year changed everything. What began as a health scare became a mission—a purpose-driven life of ultra-marathons, and a deep commitment to giving back.
Before the turning point, life was good. A bit of squash here and there, a career ticking along, and no real sense that anything was amiss. But under the surface, there were signs. A family history of heart disease and the silent weight of stress loomed. Still, the urgency to make a change hadn’t quite taken hold.
“My mum taught me about eternal optimism,” he reflects, “and while my mental state was solid, it took five operations in one year to realise I wasn’t immortal.” At age 40, reality hit hard. The surgeries weren’t just physical wake-up calls—they were life-altering moments that brought everything into sharp focus. “I’d seen my dad have a quadruple bypass at the age of 53 and still thought it was a lifetime away.”
Then came what Gordon jokingly refers to as his “Healthy Midlife Crisis”. But there was nothing midlife about the lessons he learned. “I regret not discovering the power of giving back earlier,” he says. “But better late than never, right?”
When Gordon was just 32, his father passed away before meeting his second granddaughter. He has only three photographs of his dad with his eldest child. “That breaks my heart,” he admits. “I want to be healthy enough to walk both
my girls down the aisle—and be a greatgrandfather someday.”
Then came another profound loss. Watching his mum battle leukaemia was, in his words, “heartbreaking but it awoke a dragon inside me.” Her courage and strength inspired him to dig deep and transform his life completely. The mission became clear: to live a life of experience, health, purpose, and impact. From couch to Comrades, his journey began not with a grand plan, but a decision to support a friend and the wonderful work The Cows do for childhood cancer. Delene Mulley was raising money for Children with Cancer and signed up for a half-ironman. “I joined her and KZN Herd, but she sadly lost her battle to cancer in 2016. I needed a training partner, and Deon van Niekerk became that guy. We later did a marathon together—his dream.”
From that point on, the goals got bigger, the causes more meaningful, and the challenges more intense. “Running changed my inner voice,” he says. “It showed me that the human body is capable of far more than we believe.”
But it wasn’t just about crossing the finish lines—it was about consistency, accountability, and courage. “Fear of failure kept me showing up,” he says, “and knowing I was doing it for someone else gave it greater meaning.”

Amongst the toughest feats? Riding the 106km Amashova on a 65kg ice-cream bicycle and completing the 50km MontAux-Sources trail run—a brutal 11.5-hour endurance test. “That one broke me,” he admits. “I thought of everyone I knew who’d lost their battle with cancer. I ran for them.”
But it was his first Half Ironman at age 40 that changed him the most. “It broke me open—mentally and physically—but it showed me I could achieve anything. It wasn’t about the medal; it was about the meaning. Every event I do raises money. That’s the fuel.”
Gordon’s mantra is simple: Live a life filled with experiences. Give more. Inspire others.

" I’m just an ordinary guy doing extraordinary things."
His father’s words still echo in his mind: “You’re never too old for a happy childhood.” That sense of joy, adventure and doing things for others drives him forward. “I want my wife and daughters to be proud. I want to show them the importance of living with purpose.”
The causes close to his heart speak volumes—from raising funds for cancer awareness to protecting wildlife. “I want my grandkids to see rhinos and elephants in the wild—not just in books. And health awareness? It’s everything. You can have all the money in the world, but if your health fails you, what’s left?”
He’s not alone in this journey anymore. What started with one Half Ironman has grown into a movement. Together with Iris Varty, he co-founded a Midmar Mile swim for CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of SA). From 35 swimmers and R40,000 raised, it has grown to over 400 swimmers and more than R800,000.
“That’s the magic,” he says. “Watching others discover their power when they do something scary for a cause bigger than themselves. That’s where the real change happens.”
To anyone feeling stuck or afraid to begin, his advice is powerful: “Find a BHAG—a Big Hairy Audacious Goal—and commit. Tell someone.
GORDON, AMY, ERIN AND SIMONE REID
Write it down. Visualise the win. Then do it, not for you, but for someone else. That’s where purpose is born.” Gordon’s eyes are now set on one of South Africa’s most gruelling endurance races: the Comrades Marathon. “It’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on. But after last year’s Run for Rangers—100km over two days—I knew I had to do it.”
He’s raising R66,000 in 2025 across three causes: SAN Parks Honorary Rangers via Comrades, Project Rhino and Sport for Lives via Run for Rangers, and the Endangered Wildlife Trust via the Rhino Peak Challenge. Recently, he was a guest on The Incredible Machines Podcast, where he spoke about his challenges and life.
This is more than a story about running; it’s about transformation. It’s about what happens when pain meets purpose. It’s about the everyday man who dared to change and, in doing so, started a ripple effect, inspiring hundreds to step into their own strength.

This article explores how Trellidor has become a trusted part of Durban North, protecting homes and businesses for over 50 years. From classic trellis gates to sleek modern solutions, discover how the brand continues to evolve with changing lifestyles and property trends.
Sometimes a brand is so much a part of the landscape that it feels like it has been around forever. In the unique context of the South African crime situation, Trellidor has become a well-known company in the north of Durban. This has been their home for over 50 years of protecting (and employing) generations of locals, and there is
scarcely a family that hasn’t had contact with them in some way.
In the mid-seventies, when the Trellidor factory opened, Umhlanga was a tiny village, and there was not much urban development beyond it. Today, it is no longer a sleepy village. Expansion northwards has been rapid, and Trellidor has a flagship showroom in town and
a gallery in Ballito. Through it all, Trellidor has been like all good neighbours—just down the road and easily accessible to those needing help or advice.
In the early days of free-standing houses on large properties, Trellidor trellis gates were the go-to barrier for doors and windows. They were fitted in large sugar farming estates,
suburban homes, seaside cottages, small business premises and national chain outlets. A generation later, they are still the top-selling security barrier in the Trellidor range.
The trend today is for protection that doesn’t look like metal gates. Living in protected communities with peripheral security means the threats are not always from hardened criminals. It’s more about preventing petty theft, creating privacy from neighbours and keeping out insects, monkeys, snakes, and the weather.
The property profile in the area has changed considerably too. Secure estates and apartments have rapidly been added to the lifestyle options available. The north of Durban has also become a commercial hub
with businesses spread throughout. These new ways of living and working require a new generation of products, and Trellidor has been quick to adapt to the change.
The company pioneered see-through mesh security screens 15 years ago. They proved to be a winner for Umhlanga and Ballito homes because they don’t look anything like traditional burglar-proofing. The screens fit beautifully into modern lifestyle needs, screening out heat, wind, dust, and sand, without spoiling our gorgeous views of gardens or sea.
Louvre shutters are completely at home in coastal properties and have been given a Trellidor twist. The design is clean, minimalist and has in-built strength to take them beyond the ordinary. There are two different options—a lighter design for homes in secure estates and a stronger
one for more vulnerable properties. “We’ve expanded our selection of burglar proofing for windows too, so there is something for every style of home. On the business side, we have Rollerstyle roller shutters, which is also popular for home safe zones, and Coroview safety glass sectional overheads, amongst other designs,” says Trellidor Durban branch manager Wayne Bachmann.
“Whatever the style of your home or business and whatever it is that you want to protect, we have a solution for you. We usually work in existing buildings, but if you’re still in the process of planning or building a new property, call us in so that we can help you design around your barriers and make sure your security is seamless.”
When you’ve been waiting for something so long, it almost feels like it goes by way too fast once you get there. Although it lasted for 12 hours, the 10th edition of ULTRA South Africa felt like it was just a few seconds. It was so much fun to see some of our favourite
artists live and celebrate a decade of the biggest electronic dance music festival in Africa! Here’s how our ULTRA South Africa experience went this year:
While we scouted where the other stages were, we made our way to the main stage. It was everything we were hoping to be:
massive, vibrant, and loud. We had local artists bringing the energy and getting the crowd to dance – and it was just the beginning. Artists like Cinimin (Kyle Cassim has played at every ULTRA South Africa since it began!), TiMO ODV, and Jordan Arts. What’s great about the Johannesburg festival is the four stages, so you can
switch between them to experience the different sub-genres of EDM. Set in a large exhibition hall, the Resistance stage gives you more of the club rave atmosphere. We got to hear some of Sona’s deep cuts and had a temporary escape from the cold wind that started to stir. At some point, I got separated from my group, and it gave me some time to check out The Groove Room stage before joining them again to head back
to the main stage for the headliners. The temperatures started to drop, but we hardly felt it with the DJs who kept us moving all night. Gil Glaze brought some classic progressive house and big room hits to kick off the evening. He had us feeling his energy with a blend of nostalgic tracks and some original records of his own. With his family being from South Africa, it was a special set for him to be able to play for us.
Next up, it was time for KSHMR to take the stage. This was a special set for us, with Dhivashni and I screaming almost every song and eventually losing our voices in the process. With his unique, Indianinspired visuals and sound, the whole crowd was entranced by his songs. We also got to hear favourites like “Karate", “Bazaar", and “Carry Me Home". In addition to his signature blend of progressive house
and big room, he also included high-energy hardstyle edits of songs like “Tsunami", taking the crowd to the next level. As a way to integrate South African culture, he also played remixes of “Sister Bethina", “Jerusalema", and “Nkalakatha". We were all out of breath by the time his set was over!
But there was no time to rest. ISOxo, an artist who brought bass house, melodic bass, dubstep and riddim to the main stage, showed everyone the heavier and rockinspired side of EDM. I might need a neck brace after that set, but it was well worth it. Hearing “STARsound (pt2)" live was incredible, and we even ventured into the crowd to join in on the mosh pits!
The king of trance music, Armin Van Buuren, himself brought his nostalgic and serene tracks, and after the high energy ISOxo brought, it was a welcome slow down of pace. Don’t be fooled, we did not stop moving, we couldn’t! I don’t think I ever screamed “blah blah blah” that loud in my life. Adding a few classics like “This Is What It Feels Like" and “Great Spirit", the crowd was on their feet and chanting along.
The closing act for the night, Martin Garrix took the stage. With his custom visuals and gripping intro made up of all his hit songs, the anticipation in the air was palpable. We all waited for him with bated breath, and when he stepped on the stage and actually spoke to us, it hit us that this artist is right there playing for us! He had the crowd singing “Tremor", one of his big room hit records from 2014, which doesn’t even have words! He also included “Animals" and my personal favourite–“Carry You". He brought out artists like Lloyiso and Lauv, who sang live, elevating the experience of the songs. Fun fact: Martin Garrix actually played his first ever ULTRA in South Africa!
As his set was ending, it felt like it was too soon. He closed with “Starlight (Keep Me Afloat)", which was an emotional performance with the combination of the culmination of the night, lyrics, melodic progression of the drop, pyrotechnics and Garrix’s parting words. There were several tears shed at the end. 40000 steps and 25 hours well spent.
Until next year!
Meet the visionaries behind L’Atelier Paris Concours d’Elegance Durban WORDS KAI COATES PHOTOS BASIL STATHOULIS PHOTOGRAPHY
In a world where horsepower and heart rarely align, the L’Atelier Paris Concours d’Elegance Durban is a rare exception. Founded in 2017 by classic car enthusiast and hospitality expert John Aritho, this annual celebration of vintage vehicles and refined living blends elegance with empathy, proudly supporting Project Rhino. Held in over 60 cities globally, Durban’s edition stands out for its commitment to both style and social impact.
We caught up with the passionate minds behind the event to explore how a love for classic cars and heartfelt values has shaped one of Durban’s most stylish and meaningful lifestyle experiences.
John Aritho
What inspired you to start the Concours d’Elegance in Durban?
The inspiration came from a deep, lifelong passion for classic cars and restoration. Having collected vehicles across Dubai, Kenya, and South Africa, I always believed Durban had the potential to host a worldclass motoring event. In 2017, I saw an opportunity to bring together likeminded enthusiasts to celebrate heritage, craftsmanship, and style. The event reflects not just my journey with cars, but a desire to share that passion with the city I now call home.
How did you blend your hospitality background with motoring heritage and lifestyle elements?
My career in hospitality taught me that the best experiences are immersive
and thoughtful. With Concours Durban, I wanted to offer more than a car showcase—it had to feel like an elegant retreat. We integrated gourmet cuisine, fine coffee, fashion, art, and live music to create a setting where guests could enjoy luxury in all its forms, alongside the beauty of classic motoring.
Tell us more about the community you’re building through ‘Classics & Life’
‘Classics & Life’ is more than a movement; it’s a community of people who appreciate the finer things, from vintage craftsmanship to cultural storytelling. The most rewarding part
has been watching friendships form and seeing people light up when they connect over shared passions.
What is it about restoring to the Concours standard that captivates you?
It’s the journey of transformation—taking something forgotten and giving it new life. Every curve, stitch, and polish is a tribute to the past. What captivates me most is the storytelling behind each restoration. It’s art, history, and engineering coming together to create something truly timeless.
Tell us about your plans to expand the Concours experience
The vision has always been to take the Concours ethos nationwide. We’re currently exploring opportunities in Cape Town and Johannesburg, where the
appetite for luxury motoring and lifestyle is growing. Each city has its own character, and we aim to tailor each edition while keeping the essence of elegance, heritage, and community at the core.
What drew L’Atelier Paris to the event as a headline sponsor?
Every great project starts with people. When I met John Aritho, I was immediately inspired by his profound passion and exceptional vision for the event. I felt that what he was creating stood out in the South African cultural landscape. At L’Atelier Paris, we’re always seeking meaningful collaborations that reflect our commitment to excellence, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance—values that are very much aligned with the spirit of the Concours.
How does your love for luxury watches and jewellery connect with classic cars?
Timeless design never goes out of style. Whether it’s in fine watchmaking or classic automobiles, true craftsmanship
stands the test of time. Take, for example, the TAG Heuer Monaco, first introduced in 1969—today, it still closely resembles the original, yet remains as iconic and desirable as ever. The same philosophy applies to classic cars; they embody design, precision, and a legacy that continues to inspire.
What excites you most about bringing this world-class celebration of elegance to the heart of Durban?
It’s incredibly exciting to see a world-class classic car event take place right here in Durban. While cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg often take the spotlight, Durban’s car culture is incredibly vibrant and passionate. We’re proud to work alongside John Aritho to help put Durban on the global map through the Concours. And this, we believe, is only the beginning of something truly special.
Tell us about the experience you’re curating for guests through the event
As with last year, we’ll continue our partnership with TAG Heuer and the
Concours, showcasing a selection of rare and special timepieces for the occasion. In addition, we’re planning a series of exclusive VIP events in the lead-up to the Concours, designed to generate excitement and offer our clients and guests a taste of luxury, elegance, and anticipation.
What does ‘elegance’ truly mean in today’s world?
The very first Concours d’Elegance dates back to 17th-century France, where aristocrats would parade horsedrawn carriages through Parisian parks during the summer. Elegance, then as now, is not a trend—it’s a way of life. It’s about refined taste, grace, appreciation for beauty, and living with intention.
Whether it’s in the lines of a classic car, the design of a watch, or the presence of a woman, elegance is timeless.
Join us on the 7th of September at the L’Atelier Paris Concours d’Elegance in Umhlanga—you’ll see for yourself what elegance truly looks like.

What’s the first thing kids look for when they go to a restaurant? A play area and meals they can devour quickly, so they can get back to the fun. Blueberry Beacon in Cornubia Mall has quickly established itself as that spot where both parents and children can relax, grab some good food, and have fun.
The concept of creating a place where kids and parents can enjoy together started with owner Dane Hartley and his business partner, Chris Mouzouri and his wife, Anessa. With their diverse backgrounds in the restaurant industry—Dane in nightclub and lounge entertainment, and Chris and Anessa in child-friendly restaurants— they combined their expertise to create something unique. Their vision was for a spot that brought joy and light to the lives of families, their inspiration being to create a place of fun and happiness. The name comes from their first location, Blueberry Square, and the restaurant’s ability to attract children to it like a beacon. It became a viral hit, spreading love and joy, allowing parents to relax without taking away from family time.
And the Cornubia branch does just that. We got to visit Blueberry Beacon
and experience what makes the place so special. Approaching from the upper level, you can see the giant play area with children running, climbing and laughing all over, having the time of their lives. Immediately, I could see the excitement in my brother’s eyes, it was like heaven for kids.
As we took our seats, you could see how they managed to fuse aspects that appeal
to both adults and children. The lights and disco-type atmosphere with the characters dancing and interacting with the children creates something for them to do and entertains the adults who look on, amused by the shenanigans the children get up to. The indoor and outdoor seating also provides a great view of the play area for parents to keep an eye on their kids. Our friendly waiter helped us choose some great drinks to start off with.
Their colourful menu is designed to attract the eye, and we found the gourmet milkshakes with ease, eager to try them out. We opted for the “To the Moon” milkshake, a combination of strawberry and bubblegum flavours, topped with a frosted ring doughnut, whipped cream, astros and sprinkles! A colourful explosion of flavour.
While we sipped on our drinks, the leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime made an appearance! This unique concept that they introduced to the restaurants is what initially attracted the children and increased the popularity of the brand.
Bringing these characters to life for the children is a special part of what they do. When a little kid meets Elsa or fist bumps Bumblebee, it’s a special experience, and Blueberry Beacon lets them make those memories. Imagine having a dance party with Spider-Man and Bluey!
Satisfying the little ones’ fussy palates can be a challenge sometimes. Blueberry Beacon’s menu offers a range of meals that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters. We got a little spread for our table, consisting of a pizza, some fries (a must), jalapeño poppers, and crumbed chicken strips and chips. While we ate, we heard

the music turn up, and we turned around to see Spider-Man leading a dance competition on the other end of the restaurant! Not wanting to miss out on the fun, the kids joined in for a while before returning to the table to finish their meals.
One of the reasons why the Cornubia branch is so beloved is the surrounding communities of families which flock to the restaurant. They visit for family time, and with the June holidays coming up, it’s bound to be a choice destination. They encourage families to stay longer and allow the children to play to their hearts’ content until they tire themselves out. Bedtime will be a breeze!
The restaurant plans to expand its offerings to keep everyone busy. Activities like face painting, pottery, arts and crafts, rides and toy ranges will be coming to the Cornubia branch. So, be on the lookout for them when you visit! After the kids tired themselves out, reluctant and yawning, they returned from the jungle gym. It was an amazing experience that entertained us, seeing the kids having so much fun.

In 2025, sports nutrition is going beyond just protein shakes and energy bars. As people become more health-conscious and want more personalised choices, the industry is shifting to meet those needs. Whether you are a gym regular, a weekend runner, or just trying to eat better, these are the trends to look out for this year.
People still love classic milk-based drinks and whey shakes, but there’s a growing demand for lighter, more natural flavours. Clear whey is now available, which is fruity, and refreshing, making healthy drinks more enjoyable, especially in the summer months.
Plant-based diets are booming, and sports nutrition is catching up. Expect to see more veganfriendly snacks and plant-based supplements that actually taste good and are packed with nutrients.
It’s not just about muscles anymore, it is a more holistic approach. Sports nutrition is expanding to address gut health and cognitive function, with targeted products designed to support everything from digestion to mental clarity.
Protein Is Still King
Protein is still at the core of sports nutrition and is a huge focus of athletes and consumers. In fact, the number of people focusing on getting enough protein has jumped a lot—from 59% in 2022 to 71% in 2024. Whether from shakes, bars, or meals, high-protein products are here to stay. This trend is expected to continue, driving demand for innovative, protein-rich products.
Inspired by longevity-focused diets like the Blue Zone diet (my personal favourite), consumers are looking for products that not only enhance performance but also promote healthy ageing. Foods that support long-term wellness are gaining traction as more people take a proactive approach to their future health.
Supercharged Water
Water is getting a major upgrade. “Functional waters” are drinks with added vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and antioxidants. They help with hydration, recovery,
and overall wellness, and I believe are essential to good sports performance.
Probiotics in Everyday Foods
Probiotics are no longer just in pill form. You’ll find them in drinks, snacks, and even protein powders, all aimed at keeping your gut happy and your digestion on point.
The Main Trend: Tech-Infused Functional Nutrition
The biggest shift? Technology is playing a bigger role in how we eat. From apps that help you plan your meals to personalised supplements made just for you, AI and smart tools are making nutrition more tailored than ever before.
As these trends grow, expect to see more personalised, tasty, and health-boosting options available. Whether you want to build muscle, feel more energetic, improve performance or just live healthier, 2025’s sports nutrition trends are all about making it easier—and tastier— to take care of yourself.

The early sun breaks through the trees outside the Durban North factory, casting light across the quiet building as the day begins. Dane Forman walks the floor, not as a distant director, but as someone who once packed boxes here. Raised on the Durban surf and local slang, Dane was “bru’d” for this. He's been at Phormpak 23 years. It’s not just a job, it’s a legacy. And Dane holds its success like a treasured heirloom entrusted to him, refining it and taking it to the next level.
It’s not about flashy titles or hollow slogans. It’s about employees staying not out of necessity but because their work gives them a place of belonging and meaning. Phormpak smells of effort, brewing coffee, of machine oil and determination. You hear laughter between shifts, the clink of tools, and the crisp tear of packaging. “People dedicate their lives to businesses,” Dane says, “and they wouldn’t do it if it was a terrible working environment.” He pauses, “That’s why we create a place where people feel accepted, safe, and like they belong.”
Phormpak is growing a tree. It sways, bends, expands. It adapts. And Dane nurtures each branch. "Trying to force a piece in the wrong place ruins the picture," he says with a grin. "But when the fit is right,
it's clear for all to see." The factory hums as machines craft packaging for pain relief, beauty creams, and cough syrups. These containers might seem ordinary, but Dane sees more. Phormpak creates packaging for the stories of life. “We’re integrated into people’s journeys,” he explains. “Every customer, and every customer’s customer has a story, and we fit into those stories.”
All the pieces were in Dane’s mind - culture, care, courage. So, over the last two years, with the support of his business coach, Dane took everything he carried in his head, laid it out and began implementing. Coaching helped turn quiet wisdom into actionable steps. The impact? Increased productivity and profitability. And a business where people pay attention to their work, see their worth,
and feel their impact. Dane doesn’t just lead, he inspires. "Defining our values and vision was most important. It meant team members had clarity and direction, and we had the right people on the Phormpak journey."
Creating the correct framework for effective management is crucial. Dane has implemented systems and processes to manage the team’s productivity. Scorecards track progress; visibly and tangibly. “They look at their scorecards and go, oh, I’ve done a great job,” Dane smiles. “It gives them drive and purpose.” Knowing what winning looks like and managing employee productivity is the basis of good management. People take pride in being a part of and contributing to a winning team. When people come first, growth isn’t a goal... it’s a given.
