Mi vida más leve My life at its lightest I drank like a fish, mainlined heroin, and smoked it too. I smoked joints as well and I never turned my nose up at pills, amphetamines or coke. The only thing I didn’t like was acid. I had a couple of bad experiences and I think that’s what put me off. I was an addict who took every kind of drug for more than 20 years. That’s a long time to forget, though it sometimes feels as if it happened to someone else. It’s not the same when you’re 30 as it is when you’re 40, let alone 50 and even less so now that I’m into my 60s. You change a lot over the years. You become a different person with different interests. And you don’t get those years back. So who was I? A manic photographer drugged-up to the eyeballs? Or was I just deluded? 6

I remember Susana in the 80s reproachfully asking me what I got out of drinking all day long. What could I say? My job was the only thing keeping me going. There were photoshoots in the early 90s when my PA would try to haul me out of bed after a night on the booze, while customers and models waited for me in the hall. I must have cut a pathetic figure emerging for a shoot in that state. I’d have one Negrita rum and coke after another to get myself going and I thought nothing of it. They gave me a push, made me feel brave. They even hid my restlessness and my fear. I chased the dragon for years too. Time and again, when the stylist was busy changing the models’ outfits, I’d

Café Lehmitz was a small joint in Hamburg where a motley crew from the local underclass would gather to drink beer and coffee, a bunch of people dragging their problems through life like a heavy, unrelenting burden. Café Lehmitz was like home to them, a safe haven where no one would judge them, where they were all equals, despite their differences. Then one day, in 1967, a timid, young Swedish photographer walked through the café’s doors. He sat down in a corner and placed his camera on the table, thinking he would go unnoticed. It wasn’t long, though, before

the customers were passing his camera around, laughing and posing as they took pictures of themselves. Now Café Lehmitz is synonymous with all those cafés and places where we seek refuge, where we feel among equals, among different lonely people who share their problems without ever putting a name on them, over a cup of coffee or a few beers, which serve as both respite and a pretext. The young Swede in question was Anders Petersen (Solna, Sweden, 1944) and those images would be his first major series of prints. And yes, despite DOSSIER
