ace 25 años todo era diferente. Un pequeño y diverso equipo de profesionales acababa de publicar el número “cero” de una revista de fotografía y cultura y estaban a punto de entrar en imprenta con el primer número. Una publicación nada habitual en aquel momento. Posiblemente tampoco hoy sea nada habitual. Tal vez aquel tiempo puede parecer visto desde hoy, desde un entonces futuro improbable, más adecuado para la aventura. Pero no lo era, ningún tiempo que podamos haber vivido fue nunca favorable a la aventura, al riesgo o al desasosiego de un viaje sin certezas y con todos los vientos y el mar en contra. Que le pregunten a Ulises, o a Bas Jan Ader, si a mí no me creen. Aquella revista es la misma que tiene usted hoy en sus manos, EXIT. De aquel equipo ya no queda nadie, ni siquiera yo, que solo soy una voz en off, el narrador de esta historia. Porque 25 años son muchos años, y los redactores, los editores, los diseñadores, los traductores, los asesores... han ido cambiando con los años, moldeando la revista, que ha ido creciendo y mejorando gracias al esfuerzo de todos y cada uno de ellos. Ustedes también han cambiado, mis improbables y curiosos lectores. El tiempo pasa rápido y nosotros vamos arrastrados en el torbellino de su fuerza. Increíblemente aún conservamos bastantes de nuestros primeros sus-

criptores, y muchos de nuestros lectores que nos han acompañado estos 25 años y que son ya una parte esencial del equipo de EXIT. Lo que curiosamente apenas ha cambiado es la fotografía. Seguramente porque EXIT nace prácticamente con la eclosión de una nueva forma de pensar, de hacer y de ver fotografía. Porque el tiempo pasa rápido, pero los movimientos culturales y los cambios estéticos se cuecen a fuego lento. EXIT nace cuando nadie le presta especial atención, dentro del mundo del arte, a un movimiento que ya está en marcha desde finales de los 70 y que explota en los 80. Una nueva generación de artistas, no necesariamente formados en la idea canónica de lo que era entonces la fotografía, pero que se servirán de la fotografía para dar un cambio radical a la imagen y a la presencia fotográfica. Son jóvenes que provienen de las escuelas de arte, formados a partir de las derivas conceptuales de las generaciones anteriores, de los estudios de historia del arte, de filosofía, y de las escuelas de bellas artes. Algunos de ellos iban para pintores, para escultores, pero se les cruzó la fotografía y todos ellos, algunos cercanos entre sí, y otros cada uno por su cuenta, forman parte de esos extraños movimientos que en la historia clásica del arte se llaman ismos, y que hoy con la creciente velocidad del tiempo se llaman tendencias. Ellos y ellas (muchas ellas, por cierto) han subvertido la historia de la fotografía, han cambiado ya para siempre la idea de imagen y de fotografía. La han usado ya no solo como documento directo de la realidad, sino como crítica y transformación de esa realidad.

EXIT crece y se forma con ellos, a su ritmo, con su trabajo y sus cambios, en el mismo centro de esa revolución conceptual y formal que vive la fotografía y la imagen en estos 25 años.

En EXIT nos hemos dedicado todos estos años a hablar de ellos, a mostrar sus imágenes.

En estos años han pasado por estas páginas, sus páginas, más de dos mil fotógrafos de todo el mundo. Todos aportan una vuelta de tuerca más a este movimiento renovador y diferenciador que crece con cada uno de ellos y con su trabajo.

Esto es EXIT, ellos son nuestra razón de seguir aquí, todavía. Y en este número con el que cumplimos 25 años, cuando ya todo esto es historia y ellos son los artistas más importantes de su generación, les dedicamos este aniversario. Hablamos de sus influencias y de por qué ellos son ahora quienes influyen a las nuevas generaciones. Naturalmente no caben todos en una revista, por eso hemos hecho antes otras 96, les recomendamos a los que no las tengan todavía que las busquen, en papel o en digital, les aseguro que son esenciales para entender qué es la fotografía hoy, de dónde viene y cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí.

Hoy ya ninguna revista hace un “número cero” cuando empieza, por eso este es el número 97 de

EXIT. En él empezamos otra vez, y para empezar reunimos solamente algunos de los nombres esenciales de este cambio que ha vivido la fotografía, para recordar lo que hacían cuando nace EXIT y lo que hacen ahora, 25 años después. Mostramos sus obras de entonces y las de ahora. Ya nadie les puede cuestionar su importancia. Y es que el tiempo vuela y a su paso todo cambia. Y la fotografía ya no es lo que era, después de estos 25 años ya nada será igual. Por eso EXIT cambia para seguir estando dentro de ese cambio. Más fotografía, más análisis, y nuestro equipo en permanente renovación y cambio como la vida, como el arte.

En las siguientes páginas volverán a leer los nombres de una época, de una generación y verán sus obras más conocidas, pero también verán lo que llevan haciendo estos últimos años, lo más reciente, y a través de su evolución quizás comprendan mejor lo que es hoy la fotografía y cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí. Sus nombres ya los saben, los han visto en estas páginas muchas veces durante 25 años

verything was different 25 years ago. A small and multi-faceted team of professionals had just published issue “zero” of a photography and culture magazine and were about to go to print with the follow-up. It was no ordinary publication at the time, which quite possibly remains the case today. Viewed from what was then an unlikely future, those days might seem more ripe for adventure. Yet that was not the case. In fact, there has never been a time that has been propitious for adventure, risk and uncertain journeys in which wind and sea are against, with all the unease that entails. Just ask Ulysses or Bas Jan Ader if you don’t believe me.

That magazine is the same as the one you have in your hands today: EXIT. There’s no one left from that team, not even me. I’m just a voice off-screen, the narrator of the story. Twentyfive years is a long time, and in that time writers, editors, designers, translators, and consultants have come and gone, shaping a magazine that has grown and improved thanks to the hard work of each and every one of them.

You have changed too, my unlikely and curious readers. Time goes by quickly, leaving us trailing in its mighty wake. Amazingly, we have held on to many of our first subscribers and to many of the readers who have accompanied us

in these last 25 years and who are key members of the EXIT team.

One thing that has hardly changed is photography, strangely enough, probably because EXIT came into being with the emergence of a new way of thinking about, doing and seeing photography. Time passes quickly, whereas cultural movements and aesthetic changes are slow to come to the boil.

EXIT saw the light of day when no one in the art world was paying much attention to a movement conceived in the late 1970s and which exploded in the 80s. It was formed by a new generation of artists who had not necessarily been trained in the canon of photography of the day but who drew upon the art form to radically transform the photographic image and presence.

There were young and fresh out of art school, trained in the conceptual driftings of previous generations, art studies and philosophy, and schools of fine arts.

Some had designs on becoming painters, some sculptors, but they came across photography and all of them – some close to one another and others doing their own thing – form part of these odd movements that the classical history of art terms “isms”, and which today, as time moves ever faster, are known as “trends”.

These men and women (there are many of the latter, incidentally) have subverted the history of photography and changed the very idea of it and the image forever.

They have used it not only to document reality directly but also to critique and transform that reality. EXIT has grown and developed with them, at its own pace, through its work and transformations, at the selfsame centre

of the conceptual and formal revolution that photography and the image have undergone in these last 25 years.

We have devoted all these years at EXIT to talking about them, to showing their images. In that time, more than 2,000 photographers from all over the world have made it onto these pages, its pages. They have all brought their own twist to a refreshing and distinctive movement that has grown with each of them and with their work.

That is what has made EXIT and they are the reason why we are here, still.

Now that all this is history and they are the most important artists of their generation, we dedicate this issue celebrating our 25 years to them. We talk about their influences and why they are influencing new generations. We can’t fit them all into a single issue, of course, which is why we’ve done 96 before this one.

We recommend to those of you who don’t have these issues to go out and get them, either in paper or digital format. I can assure you that they are essential to understanding what photography is today, where it comes from and how we have got to where we are now.

These days, no magazine starts out with an issue 0, which is why this is EXIT 97, an issue in which we start over. In doing so, we bring together just some of the key names in the change that photography has undergone, to recall what they were doing when EXIT was born and look at what they are doing now, 25 years down the line.

We show their works from then and now, when no one can question their importance. Time flies and everything changes in its path, including photography, which is not what it was. Nothing is after 25 years. That is why EXIT is changing to remain part of that change, with more photography and more analysis and a team in a state of flux and ongoing renewal, like life and like art itself.

You’ll see the names that defined an era on the following pages and their best-known works.

You’ll also see what they have been up to in the last few years, their most recent work. Through their development, you will perhaps gain a better understanding of what photography is today and how we have come to where we are.

P

uede decirse que la fotografía “contemporánea” empezó con el fotolibro The Americans, de Robert Frank, publicado en los Estados Unidos por primera vez en 19601.

El libro de Frank estableció una fotografía nueva que combinaba el espíritu del documental pero con un nuevo punto de vista subjetivo. Sus imágenes, que rechazaban el inamovible dogma tradicional de la objetividad técnica, se caracterizan por composiciones poco convencionales, por carecer de un enfoque definido o por tener más grano que detalles. Esas particularidades las dotaban de un carácter más vital, dinámico, emotivo y subjetivo de la sociedad y sus integrantes. En lugar de hacer gala de una “neutralidad” insulsa y falsa, las imágenes de Frank se posicionan y ensalzan distintos puntos de vista. Sus fotografías muestran una sociedad repleta de contradicciones (ricos y pobres, relaciones raciales y de poder de carácter binario, etc.) y revelan los conflictos como consustanciales a la subjetividad (por ejemplo, la aliena-

ción, el aislamiento, el amor y la muerte). El libro de Robert Frank gestó una nueva forma de pensar y, como tal, constituye un ejemplo muy claro de un nuevo “paradigma” en la fotografía contemporánea. Aunque aquello ocurrió hace sesenta y cinco años, la obra de Frank marca el comienzo de una serie de cambios de paradigma sucesivos que podríamos especular que continúa con el surgimiento de las nuevas prácticas fotográficas computacionales generativas y de inteligencia artificial.

El concepto de “paradigma” como modelo para reflexionar sobre la práctica es consabido en la ciencia, pero en el arte y la fotografía sigue siendo una novedad. Un “cambio de paradigma” se produce cuando un conjunto de valores y un modelo de pensamiento nuevos se contraponen a un paradigma, tradición o convenciones existentes. Así pues, por ejemplo, es evidente que el fantástico libro The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1986), de Nan Goldin, se desarrolla a partir del innovador paradigma “subjetivo” instituido por el

libro The Americans, de Robert Frank, aunque al mismo tiempo lo supera. La originalidad de Nan Goldin radicaba en su uso del color y el tema, inspirados en una novedosa actitud íntima. Su enfoque íntimo plantea un nuevo formato híbrido en el que confluyen el punto de vista subjetivo de la fotografía analógica “instantánea” de 35 mm con la intimidad “privilegiada” de los retratos de Diane Arbus y su fascinación por los grupos e individuos marginados, tal y como se visualizan en la sociedad estadounidense moderna. La obra de Nan Goldin no resulta innovadora solamente por centrarse en la vida personal como imagen narrativa, sino porque consigue implicar al espectador en el espacio emocional de esas cuestiones de intersubjetividad. Entre las décadas de 1960 y 1980, los Estados Unidos

continuaron siendo un punto de referencia clave a nivel internacional en una sucesión de nuevos paradigmas creativos, cuya aparición se apreciaba también en otras partes, aunque en ningún sitio con tanta claridad como en ese país. En este punto, resulta significativo cómo Cindy Sherman convirtió en un arte la cuestión de la imagen propia, inspirándose en las representaciones de la feminidad en el cine, los medios de comunicación de masas, la publicidad y la historia del arte. Sherman toma esas imágenes a las que se ha visto sometida como los múltiples horizontes en los que se performa la imaginación del yo. Sherman las reelabora y “performa” de forma creativa como imágenes del “yo”: las fotografías que toma desgastan la superficialidad de cualquier autoaparición fotográfica y, al

mismo tiempo, demuestran su efectividad. Aluden a la identidad dividida subyacente que acecha a todas esas ideas del yo, porque se fundamenta en imágenes contradictorias. Aunque antes y después muchos otros han fotografiado su “yo” (una idea problemática para Cindy Sherman, que no muestra nunca ningún “yo” verdadero), es esa artista quien ha transformado de manera fundamental la identidad y la performance como espacios con valor crítico y las ha dotado de legitimidad visual. El paradigma de la creación de imágenes de Sherman ha sido transformador, no solo en cuestiones relativas a la feminidad, sino en toda la visibilidad y la cuestión de la política social de la identidad a gran escala.

Desde la década de 1980, han surgido paradigmas nuevos por todo el mundo. En Canadá, Jeff Wall reinventó el formato fotográfico del tableau vivant, que transformó en grandes fotografías retroiluminadas cuyas superficies alumbradas parecían un homenaje a las modernas pantallas de cine, los carteles publicitarios callejeros iluminados y las vidrieras. Sin embargo, la temática crítica de Wall no se parece a ninguno de esos otros formatos, pues él reconvierte la imagen pictórica del tableau vivant en un nuevo estilo fotográfico. Wall configura una nueva fotografía fija “fílmica” o “cinematográfica” en la que las escenas de la vida cotidiana se convierten en imágenes fotográficas a gran escala y alta fidelidad sobre la vida contemporánea.

En la Europa de la década de 1990, emergió también una nueva y revitalizada fotografía social a gran escala. En Alemania, Andreas Gursky reconvirtió el antiguo modelo tipológico de “serialidad” de la fotografía de la escuela de Düsseldorf de Bernd y Hilla Becher en un nuevo modelo de gran formato de fotografía social que, más que una “nueva objetividad”, proponía una práctica construccionista de “posobjetividad”. Las fotografías a gran escala de Gursky reconocían los procesos digitales para crear imágenes compuestas que a menudo nos llevan a desconfiar de lo que vemos: “¿De verdad que eso es de verdad?”. Sus imágenes suscitan esa duda estética, pero consiguen contrarrestarla con nuestra fascinación por la cultura consumista global, diseminada a su vez por la absorbente pasión

por la visualidad de alta fidelidad. Gregory Crewdson toma el aspecto cinematográfico de esa lógica cultural popular (la fotografía fija cinematográfica), lo sumerge en el espacio fantástico del cine de ficción y dirige su potencial narrativo hacia fantásticas historias crepusculares de una imaginación inquietante (al estilo de David Lynch). Ese paradigma fotográfico “posobjetivo” se ha adoptado de diferentes formas; por ejemplo, por los fotógrafos españoles Cristina de Middel, fotógrafa de Magnum, cuya obra explora las zonas grises de la creencia y la no creencia, y Joan Fontcuberta, cuyos trabajos se centran de maneras distintas en la ilusión y las pretensiones científicas que muchas veces también respaldan el valor histórico atribuido a las fotografías.

Con la caída del bloque soviético a principios de la década de 1990, surgieron en el escenario internacional prácticas nuevas, llegadas desde el “este” de Europa, que hasta entonces habían permanecido ocultas. El ucraniano Boris Mikhaïlov, por ejemplo, con su famosa serie Case History, de la década de 1990, sobre las personas “sin techo”, pero también con sus obras anteriores, ejemplificó que las diferentes prácticas “conceptuales” y las nuevas prácticas críticas de la fotografía contemporánea que se desarrollaban en otros lugares del mundo ya se encontraban presentes al mismo tiempo en la cultura soviética.

En el periodo de la década de 1990, también se aprecia un cambio de paradigma general más amplio en los usos de la fotografía en el arte, la moda y la cultura popular, un desdibujamiento y deslizamiento de los valores y distinciones visuales y técnicos de un conjunto institucional de valores a otro. Las imágenes de moda se convirtieron en arte, la fotografía documental se revalorizó por su capacidad para exponer hechos, el arte configuró nuevas ideas de vida.

Junto con esta “mezcolanza”, si algo ha sufrido un cambio verdaderamente radical en la fotografía contemporánea desde finales de la década de 1990 es la aparición por todo el mundo de otros espacios en las exposiciones y publicaciones internacionales de fotografía. Existe una conciencia mucho mayor de que las distintas regiones

del mundo tienen tradiciones marcadas como lugares de prácticas sociales, subjetivas y de imágenes culturales nuevas y originales. La creciente conciencia de la globalidad de la fotografía no se ha alcanzado solamente a través de exposiciones y publicaciones, sino también de los espacios ampliados de Internet. Las páginas web, las redes sociales y otras plataformas de contenido han generado actitudes nuevas hacia la distribución y el contenido; los fotógrafos y artistas pueden saltarse a las grandes instituciones y sus valores de comisariado y poner sus obras-imagen en contacto directo con diferentes culturas y públicos.

La famosa obra Women of Allah, de Shirin Neshat, basada en su niñez en Irán, no solo insufló nueva vida a la fotografía monocromática, sino que expuso la dura y estricta política del Irán posrevolucionario valiéndose del contraste de sus valores estéticos en “blanco y negro”. Esa atención al contraste monocromático también se desarrolla en la asombrosa obra sudafricana de Zanele Muholi, activista visual no binarie cuyos retratos fotográficos visibilizan a las personas LGTBQI. Los retratos de Muholi entroncan con un paradigma del retrato panafricano histórico, mucho más amplio y casi siempre basado en la tradición fotográfica de estudio (como Samuel Fosso, Sanlé Sory y Malick Sidibé, entre muchos otros). Los autorretratos de Zanele Muholi continúan al tiempo que rompen con esa tradición de pose frontal y sorprenden por su uso de elementos alegóricos que impiden caer en lecturas literales de las imágenes.

El uso del contraste monocromático y del hermoso énfasis en los profundos tonos negros también vincula las imágenes con una iconografía africana prefotográfica más antigua. A consecuencia de ese paradigma híbrido, las imágenes resultan completamente contemporáneas pero también históricas: parecen arraigadas en la cultura africana y, al mismo tiempo, transmiten una contemporaneidad radical.

Mientras en una parte del mundo la gente cobra conciencia de las imágenes tomadas por personas de otros lugares, los distintos paradigmas de la fotografía —ya sean sociales, subjetivos, políticos, culturales, activistas o autobiográficos—

empiezan a converger hasta formar nuevos patrones, nuevas combinaciones y mezclas. Quizás una de las fotógrafas más importantes que de forma sutil crea esta forma “diferencial” de trabajo sea Deana Lawson, afincada en los Estados Unidos.

La obra de Lawson, de orientación claramente “documental” e inspirada en los retratos de Diane Arbus (entre otros artistas), trasluce una contemporaneidad intensa, que es nueva y específica de la vida del siglo xxi: la presencia constante de imágenes al margen de la que se está contemplando. En las fotografías de Lawson, siempre parece haber otra imagen, ya sea de manera literal, en la escena, o por referencia asociativa. No son “citas” “posmodernas” de otras imágenes, como en la obra de Cindy Sherman, sino que estas fotografías exponen algo más: la conciencia constante de la omnipresencia de las imágenes, en pantallas, paredes, espacios sociales y domésticos. Vivimos en un mundo de imágenes que colisionan, no solo como parte de nuestro entorno, a modo de telón de fondo, sino integradas en las estructuras cotidianas de la comunicación humana, hasta el punto de que hoy en día las palabras y las imágenes fotográficas no suelen andar muy lejos las unas de las otras. Sin embargo, aunque esto parece deliberado en la obra de Lawson, confiere a sus imágenes una intimidad, especificidad y patetismo profundos. Ofrece una visión de la vida cotidiana afroamericana que no suele verse de esta manera. Se aprecia un nuevo paradigma fotográfico relacionado con la hibridación y la mezcolanza: aunque sus fotografías dan sensación de “casuales”, son profundamente deliberadas. Las escenas parecen fortuitas, pero cada detalle de la imagen parece representar de manera intencionada una complejidad de la vida. Las fotografías de Lawson, pese a rebosar información, resultan también enigmáticas y el espectador siente que hay más de lo que se ve a simple vista, en sentido tanto literal como metafórico.

Podría decirse que el fotógrafo alemán Wolfgang Tillmans fue el primer exponente de esa temática de la multiplicidad de forma más explícita, con su modelo “diferencial” de trabajo de la imagen. La obra de Tillmans es más diversa a nivel

formal y parece “ecléctica”: combina distintos formatos fotográficos (instantáneas, paisajes formales de gran formato, retratos, etc.) al tiempo que mezcla su contenido y su presentación. Algunas de sus imágenes están enmarcadas, otras sin enmarcar, otras clavadas en la pared o en una vitrina, una copia arrugada o cayéndose de la pared, etc. Tillmans, que fue el primer “fotógrafo” en ganar el Tate Turner Prize en el año 2000, mostró en la exposición ese ensamblaje diferencial de imágenes que ha continuado trabajando desde entonces. La característica fundamental de la obra fotográfica de Tillmans es un cambio constante de estilo y aspecto fotográficos, escala y formato de presentación como una multiplicidad de imágenes contemporáneas. Si desde la década de 1960 no hablamos ni escribimos siempre exactamente con las mismas palabras, es-

tructura de frases y sintaxis, ¿por qué íbamos a hacer o deberíamos hacer lo mismo con las imágenes? Los distintos paradigmas son también un reflejo de los cambios culturales.

Si, como he señalado antes, todas esas prácticas se ven desafiadas o potencialmente absorbidas por la invención de los sistemas informáticos CGI (imágenes generadas por ordenador) e inteligencia artificial generativa, que pueden acumular un gran número de diferentes imágenes existentes en un conjunto de datos para producir imágenes híbridas nuevas, cabe preguntarse qué será de la idea del cambio de paradigma. De momento, tendremos que esperar, pero no cabe duda de que los nuevos paradigmas surgen de la pasión humana por encontrar y crear formas nuevas de volver a presentar nuestras experiencias vitales subjetivas y objetivas

Contemporary photoparadigms —David Bate

C

ontemporary photography can be said to have begun with Robert Frank’s photobook The Americans first published in 1960 in the USA.1 Frank’s book created a new photography that combined a documentary ethos but with a new subjective viewpoint. Frank’s pictures rejected the traditional fixed dogma of technical objectivity, his images often have offbeat compositions, lack sharp focus or have grain more than details. These features gave them a more vital, dynamic, emotive and subjective sense of society and individuals within it. Instead of a bland fake ‘neutrality’, Frank’s pictures take a stance and eulogise different viewpoints. His pictures show a society of social contradictions (rich and poor, binary race and power relations, etc) and shows conflicts as internal to subjectivity (e.g. alienation, isolation, love and death). Robert Frank’s book created a new way of thinking, and as such is a very clear example of a new ‘paradigm’ of contemporary photography.

Although this was 65 years ago, Frank’s work marks the beginning of a number of successive paradigm shifts, which we might speculate, continues with the emergence of new generative (GAN) and AI computational image practices.

The concept of a ‘paradigm’ as model for thinking about practice is familiar in science but still a novelty in art and photography. A ‘paradigm

shift’ is when a new set of values and model of thinking sets itself against an existing paradigm, tradition or conventions. So, for example, it is clear Nan Goldin’s amazing 1986 The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is developed from the innovative ‘subjective’ paradigm established

by Robert Frank’s, The Americans, yet she goes beyond it too. Nan Goldin’s newness came through her use of colour and subject matter, informed by a new intimate attitude. Her focus on intimacy formulates a new hybrid form, merging the subjective viewpoint of 35mm ‘snapshot’ film photography with the intimate ‘insiderism’ of Diane Arbus’s portraits and her fascination with marginalized groups and individuals, as visualized in modern USA society.

Nan Goldin’s work is innovative not just because it focuses on personal life as a narrative image, but because it does so in a way to implicate the viewer inside the emotional space of these issues of inter-subjectivity.

From the 1960s to the 1980s the USA remained a key reference point internationally in a succession of new inventive paradigms, which could be seen emerging elsewhere too, but nowhere as clearly charted as in the USA. Significant here is the way Cindy Sherman turned the question of the self-image into an art, drawing on the presentations of femininity

across cinema, mass media, advertising, art history. Sherman takes these images she has been subjected to as the multiple horizons on which the imagination of the self is performed. Sherman creatively reworked and performed such images as a ‘self’ image, the photographs she makes both undermine the shallow surfaceness of any photographic self-appearance, and yet simultaneously demonstrates their effectiveness.

Her pictures hint at the divided self beneath them that haunts all such ideas of self, because it is founded in contradictory images. Although there have been many other photographers before and since who photograph their ’self’ (a problematic idea in Sherman anyway, as she never shows any true ‘self’), there is no one like Cindy Sherman who has so fundamentally transformed and visually legitimated identity and performance as space of critical value. Sherman’s paradigm of image-making has been transformational, not only for questions of femininity, but the whole visibility and question of the social politics of identity on a widespread scale.

Since the 1980s, other new paradigms have emerged from all over the world. In Canada, Jeff Wall reinvented the ‘tableau’ form of picture, transformed into large backlit-photographs whose illuminated surfaces seem like a homage to modern cinema screens, illuminated street advertising signs and stained-glass windows. Yet Wall’s critical subject matter resembles none of those other forms, instead remakes the ‘tableau’ painting image into a new form of photography.

Wall constructs a new filmic or ‘cinematic still’ photography, where everyday life scenes become grand scale photographic high-fidelity images about contemporary life.

In 1990s Europe, a new revitalized largescale social photography emerged as well. In Germany, Andreas Gursky, reworked the old ‘seriality’ typology model of Bernd & Hiller Becher‘s Düsseldorf school photography into a new large format model of social photography, not so much a ‘new objectivity’ than a ‘postobjectivity’ constructionist practice. Gursky’s large scale photographs recognised digital processes to create composite images which often challenge our believability about what we see: ‘Can that really be real?’ Gursky’s pictures provoke this aesthetic doubt but manages to counterbalance it with our fascination for global consumerist culture - which itself is disseminated by the absorptive passion for high

fidelity visuality. Gregory Crewdson takes the cinematic aspect of such popular cultural logic (the film still photograph) and plunges it into the fantasy space of fictional cinema, with their narrative potential directed towards fantastic twilight stories of a (David Lynch type) uncanny imagination. This ‘post-objective’ photographic paradigm has been taken up in different ways, for example, by the Spanish photographers Cristina de Middel, a Magnum photographer, whose own art works explores the twilight zones of belief and non-belief; and Joan Fontcuberta, whose artworks differently focus on illusion and scientific pretensions that also often underpin historical value attributed to photographs.

With the end of the Soviet bloc in the early 1990s, new hitherto hidden practices emerged on the international stage from ‘east’ Europe.

Boris Mikhaïlov from the Ukraine, for instance, not only his famous Case History 1990s series on ‘homeless’ peoples, but his earlier works exemplified how far different ‘conceptual’ and new critical practices in contemporary photography developing elsewhere globally were already simultaneously present within soviet culture.

In the period of the 1990s we can also recognise a wider general paradigm shift in the uses of photography across art, fashion and popular culture, a blurring and slippage in the visual and technical values and distinctions of one institutional set of values into another.

Fashion images became art, documentary photography was revalued for its ability to present facts, art fashioned new ideas of living.

Alongside this ‘mixing’, if any single thing has dramatically changed since the late 1990s in contemporary photography, it is the opening up of other global locations in international photography exhibitions and publications. There is a much greater awareness of different regions of the world having distinct traditions as sites of new and original social, subjective and cultural images practices. The growing awareness of the globality of photography has not only been through exhibitions and publications but also the expanded spaces of the Internet. Websites, social media and other content platforms have generated new attitudes to distribution and content; photographers and artists can bypass big institutions and their curatorial values and bring their own image-works directly into contact with different cultures and audiences.

Shirin Neshat’s famous work Women of Allah informed by her upbringing in Iran not only revived monochrome photography but turned its contrasting ‘black and white’ aesthetic values to present the stark and severe politics of post-revolutionary Iran. This attention to monochrome contrast is also developed in Zanele Muholi’s amazing South African work at a visual activist, their [Moholi uses the third person to avoid gender distinctions] photographic portraits of otherwise invisible LGTBQI peoples. Muholi’s portraits can be linked to a historical and far wider pan-African paradigm of portraiture, most often rooted in a studio photographic tradition (like Samuel Fosso, Sanlé Sory and Malick Sidibé for example alongside many others). Zanele Muholi’s own self-portraits continue but also break with this tradition of frontal pose, astonishing in their use of allegorical props that disturb any literal reading of the pictures. The use of monochrome contrast and beautiful emphasis on deep black tones also links the images to an older pre-photographic African iconography. The result of this hybrid paradigm is that the pictures feel thoroughly contemporary and historical, they feel rooted in African culture, and yet completely contemporary at the same time.

As people in one part of the world become aware of the pictures made by people in other places, different paradigms of photography, whether social, subjective, political, cultural, activist or autobiographical begin to swirl together into new patterns, new blending and mixtures.

Perhaps one of the important photographers who subtly creates this ‘differential’ form of work

is Deana Lawson, based in the USA. Ostensibly ‘documentary’ in orientation, inspired by Diane Arbus’s portraits (among other artists as well), Lawson’s work shows something acutely contemporary, which is new and specific about twenty-first century life: the ever-presence of images other than the one we are looking at. In Lawson’s pictures there always seems to be another image, either literally within the scene, or referentially associative to it. This is not a conscious ‘postmodern’ ‘quoting’ of other pictures, as in Cindy Sherman’s work, but something else is being presented here: the ever-present consciousness of images everywhere, on screens, on walls, in social and domestic spaces.

We live in a world of colliding images, not only as part of our environments, as background, but as embedded in everyday human communication structures, words and photographic images are rarely far apart today. Yet at the same time as this seems aware in Lawson’s work, it nevertheless has a deep intimacy, specificity and poignancy. She gives insight into everyday African American life that is not typically seen this way before. We see here a new paradigm of photography that has to do with hybridity and mixing, her different photographs seem ‘casual’ yet deeply intentional. The scenes look incidental, but every detail in the image seems intentionally to signify a complexity of life. Her photographs are ‘information rich’ pictures, yet enigmatic, so that the viewer feels there is more to what meets the eye here, literally and metaphorically.

It might be possible to say that the German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans was the first exponent

of this multiplicity thematic more explicitly, with his ‘differential’ model of image work. Tillmans’ work is more formally diverse and looks apparently ‘eclectic’, he mixes different formats of photograph (e.g. snapshots, large format formal landscapes, portrait and so on), while also mixing their contents and their presentation.

Some of his images are framed, unframed, others pinned to a wall, or in a glass case, a crumpled print or falling off the wall, and so on.

Tillmans was the first ‘photographer’ to win the Tate Turner Prize in 2000 and demonstrated this differential assembly of images in the exhibition and ever since. The key feature of Tillmans’ photographic work is a constant shifting of photographic style and look, scale and format of presentation as a multiplicity of contemporary images. If we do not speak or write in exactly the same words, sentence structure and syntax all the time since the 1960s, why would or should we do the same with images? These different paradigms speak to shifts in culture as well.

If as I have hinted earlier, all these different practices are seen to be challenged or potentially absorbed by the invention of CGI (computer generated images) and generative Ai (artificial intelligence) computing systems, which can amass vast numbers of different existing images into a dataset to produce new hybrid images, what, it may be asked, will become of the idea of a paradigm shift at all? For the moment, we will have to wait and see, but there is no doubt that new paradigms emerge from the human passion to find and make new forms in which to present our subjective and objective life experiences anew

Cindy Sherman Retratos anónimos —Rosa Olivares

irar hacia atrás para ver la evolución en la obra de un artista que aún hoy sigue siendo imprescindible en el arte actual, realmente personal y característico, te puede llevar a analizar su obra desde otros parámetros. El trabajo de Cindy Sherman es de una magnitud difícil de abarcar, tanto por su cantidad como por su variedad. Desde sus primeras fotografías, sus series en blanco y negro de Bus Riders (1976) y Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) hasta sus últimos trabajos de 2023 en los que su rostro ocupa todo el espacio, manipulado como si fuera un collage, usando tecnologías digitales y analógicas para distorsionar sus rasgos y exagerar los gestos, y la mezcla del color y del blanco y negro para destacar unas zonas sobre otras, han pasado casi 50 años. Entre un extremo y otro hay una cantidad de series abrumadoras en las que pasa de los iconos de los medios de comunicación, de masas, al cine, a la publicidad, a la objetualización del cuerpo, a la frialdad y violencia del sexo… La fuerza y la frescura, la originalidad y la extraordinaria fuerza crítica que se transmite exclusivamente desde un rostro, desde una presencia física simple, son la esencia permanente de su trabajo, que evoluciona y se transforma sin repetirse, sin aburrir y sorprendiendo en cada nueva serie.

Siempre se habla incorrectamente de la obra de Sherman como de la depuración del autorretrato y de la capacidad performativa de la artista (que no solo es autora y modelo, sino estilista, maquilladora, peluquera, y encargada de vestuario, de decorados y de iluminación), sin embargo ella misma afirma que en su trabajo se siente de una forma anónima, como si no fuera ella exactamente: ”Cuando me veo en las fotografías, nunca me veo a mí misma, no son autorretratos”. Esa idea de que no son autorretratos, que no es ella disfrazada, que incluso no es ella cuando solo vemos su cara, es esencial para comprender su evolución y la importancia de la influencia de su trabajo en más de una generación de artistas. Lo que ella pretende en cada imagen es convertirse en otra persona, dejar de ser ella. Esa especie de abandonarse ante la creación de una identidad (no de un personaje, nunca hay nombres ni datos) es la clave para que su obra, en continuo cambio, pueda atravesar más de cuatro décadas sin repetirse, aportando en cada nueva serie aspectos formales y conceptuales de gran peso específico y a la vez de una forma que nadie más ha hecho.

en sus vídeos o Jeff Wall o Gregory Crewdson en sus fotografías, que trabajan como productores cinematográficos, con actores, decorados, cámara y acción, condensando en una sola imagen, prácticamente un film still, toda la idea y el proceso, todo el trabajo. No, Sherman trabaja ella sola toda la preparación, a partir de la idea va conformando el cuerpo, y después será un gesto, una mirada, lo que defina el momento de la imagen, del retrato, que no del autorretrato.

Porque no se trata de disfrazarse, de apropiarse de otra identidad, se trata de ser otra persona, de no ser ella sino de representar algo que ella ve fuera de ella misma, en la sociedad.

De algo que está afuera de ella. Ese es el punto de vista que la diferencia: no se transforma, sino que desaparece en cada una de sus imágenes.

Si por ejemplo Nan Goldin nos sorprendía con su propia intimidad en La balada de la dependencia sexual,

apelando a nuestra empatía para entrar y compartir su historia, Sherman no busca nuestra empatía en absoluto.

Ella solo quiere que observemos una realidad que tal vez se nos escape por los márgenes del encuadre habitual de un retrato, y nos coloca enfrente una imagen de la que no podemos apartar la mirada, una máscara atroz y terrible que es la verdad simplemente, eso que no queríamos ver.

Desde los personajes casi naifs que viajaban en el autobús que la llevaba a la escuela de Bellas Artes en 1976 (donde dejó atras la pintura para convertirse en una artista que renueva la idea de fotografía desde parámetros de la creación artística), la presencia de la imagen de la mujer en la historia del arte, del cine negro social o policiaco de los años 50 y 60, por supuesto a las mujeres como elementos publicitarios, a las mujeres violadas y asesinadas, arrojadas a la basura, las señoras de la alta clase social, o esas

otras mujeres que la vejez va disolviendo en el paisaje, es una constante en la obra de Sherman. Hasta el momento actual, el momento de la manipulación digital o quirúrgica de nuestros rostros, un nuevo planteamiento de cómo presentarnos a través de las nuevas tecnologías; el horror de construirnos y destruirnos nosotros mismos.

La idea de identidad, de representación, subyace como una espina dorsal en prácticamente todo el arte creado en las últimas décadas, y muy especialmente en la historia de la fotografía contemporánea. Quién soy, cómo se me ve, quiénes son los otros, cómo representamos a los individuos, a los grupos sociales, a las propias ideas que asumimos como parte de nosotros mismos. A nosotros mismos. ¿Somos eso que vemos en el espejo de una imagen fotográfica? Igual que no reconocemos nuestra voz cuando la oímos en una grabación, tampoco nos reconocemos en nuestros

retratos. Sin embargo, sí reconocemos a esas personas que no existen cuando las vemos en las fotografías de Sherman. Toda su obra desarrolla un mismo argumento, mostrarnos una especie de tipología humana, social y cultural a través de su propio y desconocido cuerpo, de su propio y anónimo rostro, que modela cada vez alejándose más de su verdadero yo. No es coincidencia el esfuerzo de Sherman por no estar presente en sus exposiciones, por no dar práctica-

mente nunca entrevistas. Es una maestra no del disfraz, sino de la desaparición. Justo al contrario de lo que marca el espíritu de los tiempos: la sobreexposición del yo, la era del selfie obsesivo. hen we look back at the development of the work of an artist that remains as essential as ever to modern art, a work so personal and unique, we can begin to analyse it from different angles. Yet Cindy Sherman has produced so much work, and of such variety, that it can be hard to take it all in.

Fifty years separate her first photographs in the black and white series Bus Riders (1976) and Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) from her latest work, in 2023, in which her face fills the whole space, handled as if it were a collage, using digital and analog technology to distort her features and exaggerate her movements, and mixing colour and black and white to emphasise certain areas over others.

In between come a number of overwhelming series in which she switches from the icons of mass media to cinema, advertising, the objectification of the body, and the coldness and violence of sex.

The strength, freshness, originality and extraordinary critical power conveyed just by a face, a mere physical presence, provide the innate essence of her work, which evolves and transforms itself without becoming repetitive, without inducing boredom, surprising us in each new series.

Sherman’s work is always mistakenly discussed in terms of the refinement of the self-portrait and the artist’s performative ability – more than just the creator and model, she is the stylist, make-up artist, hairdresser, wardrobe supervisor, set designer and lighting technician. She maintains, however, that she feels anonymous in her work, as if she is not exactly herself: “When I look at the pictures, I never see myself; they aren’t self-portraits.”

This idea that they are not self-portraits, that it is not her in disguise, that it is not even her when we only see her face, is crucial to

understanding her development and the importance of the influence of her work on more than a generation of artists. What she strives for in each image is to become somebody else, to stop being her.

This form of abandoning herself in creating an identity, and not a character – there are never any names or details – has been key to her ability to produce work that has continually evolved over a period of more than four decades without ever repeating itself. Each new series contributes extremely weighty formal and conceptual aspects, all in a manner that no one else has ever done.

The way in which Sherman constructs her work is very different to artists who build their photographic images, their tableaux vivants, such as Bill Viola in his videos or Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson in their photographs. They operate in the same way as movie producers, with actors, sets, lights, camera,

action, condensing the whole idea, process and work in itself into a single image, which, to all intents and purposes, is a film still.

Sherman does something else, doing all the preparatory work herself. Working from an idea, she shapes her body, later adding a gesture or a look that defines the moment at which the image, the portrait – not the self-portrait – is captured.

It is not a question of disguising herself and assuming another identity. It is a question of being another person, not being her but representing something that she sees outside of herself, in society, something that is outside of herself.

It is that viewpoint that sets her apart.

She does not become someone else but disappears in each of her images.

While, for example, Nan Goldin took us aback with the intimacy of The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, appealing to our empathy in entering and sharing her story, Sherman is in no way looking for this from us. All she wants is for us to contemplate a reality that would otherwise perhaps slip through the frame of the portrait and evade us. She places us in front of an image that we are unable to avert our eyes from, an unbearable, terrible mask that is merely the truth, that which we did not want to see.

Ever since she showed us the almost naïve figures that travelled on the bus that took her to her fine arts school in 1976 (where she left painting behind to become an artist who uses the parameters of artistic creation to renew the idea of photography), the image of women in the history of art, black cinema and the crime films of the 1950s and 60s, and, of course, of women as advertising props, raped and murdered women – discarded in the trash – upper class women, and other women who have dissolved into the landscape with old age, has been

a constant presence in Sherman’s work. Up until now, that is, the age of the digital and surgical manipulation of our faces, a new approach to how we present ourselves through new technologies, the horror of creating and destroying ourselves.

The idea of identity, of representation, is an underlying, spine-like element in virtually all the art created in the last few decades, particularly in the history of contemporary photography: who I am, how I look, who the others are, how we represent individuals, social groups, the very ideas that we take on board and become part of ourselves, how we represent ourselves.

Are we what we see in the reflection of a photographic image?

Just as we fail to recognise our voice when we hear it recorded, we do not recognise ourselves in our portraits, though we do recognise people that don’t exist when we see them in Sherman’s photographs.

Her entire oeuvre develops the same premise. It shows us a human, social and cultural typology through her own and unknown body, her own and anonymous face, which she models in such a way that it becomes increasingly distanced from her actual self.

The effort Sherman puts into being absent from her exhibitions, to giving interviews only very rarely, is no coincidence. She is a master not of disguise, but of disappearance, moving in the opposite direction to the spirit of the times: the overexposure of self, the era of the obsessive selfie.

Sherman has made her mark on this point in the history of art with a body of work that could only find its place in photography, but which only an artist who knows their way around the history of art and contemporary culture could ever put together

Jeff Wall El umbral de la fotografía posmoderna —Víctor del Río

C

uando intentamos valorar en conjunto la trayectoria de un artista quizá los datos más reveladores se encuentran en las omisiones voluntarias o involuntarias que contienen las reconstrucciones retrospectivas de su obra. En el caso de Jeff Wall, la omisión sintomática podría reconocerse en su decisión de eliminar de la muestra que se desarrolló en la Tate Modern de Londres, en 2005, algunas de las obras conceptuales de los años 70 en contra de la idea inicial de la comisaria, Sheena Wagstaff.

Particularmente llamativa resultaba la ausencia de Landscape Manual (1972), un fotolibro que el artista había autoeditado en Vancouver bajo la sombra de una evidente afinidad con obras fototextuales publicadas con anterioridad por Robert Smithson o Dan Graham, las más obvias: A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey (1967) y Homes for America (1966-1967). Para cualquiera que se acercara a su trabajo desde una perspectiva temporal generosa, aquella pieza resultaba ilustrativa del origen de los planteamientos de Wall, constituía cierto eslabón perdido que lo conectaba con la generación anterior. Sin embargo, sería él mismo el que se empeñara en descartar esa especie de documento iniciático.

Wall ya no pertenecía a la estirpe de los artistas que operaban en las décadas de los 60 y 70 con usos de la fotografía irónicos y narrativos, pero consiguió dar un giro a los registros del arte postmoderno a partir de los 80 desde un profundo conocimiento de lo que significaba y lo que pretendía el arte conceptual. Era capaz de operar una brillante vuelta de tuerca a aquel marchamo del arte angloamericano mucho más allá de los tópicos de manual ya consagrados en el momento en el que se producía la

primera caja retroiluminada, The destroyed Room (1978), que daría formato al nuevo concepto de “fotografía escenificada” que consiguió capitalizar en aquella década.

Sin duda intuyó con bastante acierto la necesidad de una repoblación iconográfica que compensara el árido panorama de imágenes pequeñas, en blanco y negro, cuando no directamente fotocopias clavadas a la pared que relataban algún proceso autorreferencial, vídeos interminables de acciones grabadas en tiempo real, o documentos más o menos herméticos rodeados de una abundante textualidad burocrática, que habían sido los recursos habituales de aquellos artistas algo mayores que él, y que, sin duda, habían ganado un enorme prestigio intelectual. En su lugar, Wall regresó a la idea del cuadro, recuperó el objeto de museo y la imagen nítida y minuciosa que invitaba al espectador a algún tipo de desciframiento prioritariamente visual, aunque con numerosos trasfondos textuales o culturales. A partir de los 80 del siglo xx, Wall encontró la fórmula de lo que luego se denominaría fototableau o fotocuadro, y comenzó a producir, cada vez con mayor sofisticación, fotografías de gran formato escenificadas y montadas en algunos casos sobre cajas retroiluminadas que conferían aún más presencia a unas imágenes ya de por sí imponentes. Todas ellas eran escenas o paisajes de una calculada ambigüedad. Personajes situados en un contexto u objetos dispuestos para sugerir narrativamente que allí estaba pasando algo que el espectador no podía determinar. Además, en la imagen se reconocían referencias pictóricas o cinematográficas a veces explícitas, aunque transfiguradas siempre por un

halo de cotidianidad que buscaba resultar inquietante.

En realidad, Wall no fue el primero en intuir esta idea, existen obras de Ian Wallace como The Calling (1977), en las que el también artista canadiense reproduce mediante una escenificación fotográfica una obra de Caravaggio, La vocación de San Mateo (1601). Pero Wall desarrolló sistemáticamente un método en el que la fotografía objetualizada se hacía portadora de una memoria cultural de amplio espectro, y que servía como un artefacto para combinar distintos imaginarios. En muchas de ellas, el método de trabajo ha sido estrictamente cinematográfico, generando una escena como si se tratara de un director artístico de una superproducción y, al mismo tiempo, actuando como un director de fotografía. El artista montaba un set de rodaje para recrear una especie de momento decisivo que estaba lejos de ser espontáneo, algo que también volteaba la retórica documental de una parte de la fotografía artística.

La película entera es un solo fotograma detenido, de modo que todo lo que allí ocurre está sugiriendo una narrativa irresuelta y en cierto grado frustrada. Al mismo tiempo, la génesis de la imagen es manifiestamente pictórica, remontándose a la más ortodoxa tradición del arte moderno. Al ver cualquiera de sus obras, tenemos la impresión inequívoca de estar viendo un cuadro que, en ocasiones, esconde una composición declaradamente alusiva a obras de Delacroix, Renoir o Velázquez. Por último,

la propia fotografía, que es el soporte que amalgama todas esas tradiciones implícitas, muestra su propia historia y remite, en otros casos, a una tradición documental que aparecería trastocada.

Estas tramas de visualidad conviven con diferentes grados de protagonismo en cada una de las obras de Wall, algunas escoradas hacia lo cinematográfico, otras hacia lo pictórico, y todas ellas empeñadas en reinterpretar el fenómeno de la fotografía contemporánea con un invariable método de trabajo.

Podría decirse que Wall ha seguido un plan perfectamente programado para este giro del guión de las artes visuales en Occidente que lo vincularía con la mejor versión de lo que se ha denominado posmodernidad. Podemos afirmarlo a juzgar por los numerosos y lúcidos textos teóricos que ha producido a lo largo de su carrera y que constituyen una obra paralela de indudable valor. En ellos ha mostrado sutilmente las polémicas con otros prestigiosos teóricos que se mantenían fieles a cierta ortodoxia conceptual. En su obra escrita, ha construido un relato convincente de otros muchos fenómenos de la historia de la fotografía y el arte contemporáneo que comparecen en su obra de manera paradigmática. Todo ello, sin duda, le ha convertido en un actor problematizador de la tradición que le había precedido y que le otorga un lugar en la historia del arte contemporáneo que muchos otros artistas han sabido reconocer en sus derivas y potencialidades

Jeff Wall A pioneer of postmodern photography —Víctor del Río

P

erhaps the most revealing aspect of any attempt to assess an artist’s career are intentional and unintentional omissions in retrospectives of their work. In the case of Jeff Wall, his conceptual 1970s works were significant omissions from the exhibition of his work held at London’s Tate Modern in 2005. Initially included by the curator, Sheena Wagstaff, they were later removed by the artist himself.

Especially noteworthy was the absence of Landscape Manual (1972), a booklet the artist had self-published in Vancouver and which is patently similar in nature to the photo-essays of Robert Smithson and Dan Graham, the most obvious influences being A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey (1967) and Homes for America (1966-1967).

Anyone approaching Wall’s work from a broad time perspective would see Landscape Manual as an illustration of how his art took shape. It is to some extent a missing link with the generation that came before him, even if he later made a point of discarding such early works. Though he no longer belonged to the line of artists who made ironic and narrative use of photography in the 1960s and 70s, from the 80s onwards he tweaked the registers of postmodern art, based on a profound understanding of the meaning of conceptual art and what it sought to achieve.

Wall gave a brilliant twist to a brand of AngloAmerican art that went far beyond the acclaimed textbook clichés that prevailed at the time when he was creating his first backlit transparency, The destroyed Room (1978), which provided a framework for the new concept of “staged photography”, a highly productive area for him in that decade.

Wall correctly identified the need to rework iconography and compensate for an arid landscape composed of small, black and white images and photocopies pinned to walls and recounting some self-referential process, never-ending videos of actions recorded in real time, and documents sealed to some extent or other and surrounded by excessive bureaucratic textuality. These were all resources adopted by artists a little older than him and who had amassed great intellectual prestige.

Instead, Wall returned to the idea of the painting, recovering the item from the museum and with it the crisp, detailed image that invited the viewer to decipher it in a primarily visual sense, albeit with a host of textual and cultural undertones.

It was in the 1980s that Wall came across the formula for what would later become known as the “photographic tableau” and began to produce, with ever more sophistication, staged large-format photographs mounted in some cases on backlit boxes that would lend even more presence to images that were already imposing in themselves.

They depicted intentionally ambiguous scenes and landscapes, people placed in a context and objects arranged to suggest, in a narrative sense, that something is happening that is beyond the viewer’s comprehension. The image also contains sometimes-explicit pictorial and cinematographic references, though always transfigured by a sense of everyday life at its most disquieting.

The fact is, Wall was not the first to come up with this idea. Fellow Canadian artist Ian Wallace produced similar works, among them

What Wall did, however, was to systematically develop a method in which the objectified photograph conveyed a broad cultural memory and served as an artefact for drawing different imaginations together.

In many of Wall’s images, the method is strictly cinematographic. He creates scenes as if he were the artistic director of a major production, while, at the same time, operating as a director of photography. The artist comes up with a film set as a way of recreating some kind of decisive moment that is far from being spontaneous, something that also turns the documentary rhetoric of part of art photography on its head. The whole film is a single still. Everything that happens within it points to an unresolved and, to some extent, frustrated narrative.

The image is manifestly pictorial in its inception, a nod to the most orthodox tradition of modern art. To look upon any of his works is to have the unmistakable impression that, on occasion, they conceal compositions that clearly allude to the work of Delacroix, Renoir or Velázquez.

Finally, there is the photograph itself, the medium that brings all these implied traditions together, shows its own history and recalls,

in other cases, a documentary tradition that appears to have been subverted. These visual nuances exist side by side with varying degrees of prominence in each of Wall’s works, some of them leaning towards the cinematographic and other towards the pictorial, and all of them devoted to the task of reinterpreting the phenomenon of contemporary photography through an approach that is unchanging.

It could be argued that Wall has pursued the perfect plan for this plot twist in the story of the visual arts in the Western world, one that links him with the finest expression of what is known as postmodernism. This is backed up by the many clearly expressed theory texts that he has produced throughout his career and which constitute an unquestionably valuable parallel oeuvre. In them, he subtly reveals arguments with other prestigious theorists, who have remained loyal to a certain conceptual orthodoxy. In his written work, Wall produces a convincing account of many other phenomena in the history of photography and contemporary art that appear in his work as paradigms. This has unquestionably made him a disruptor of the tradition that preceded him and has given him a place in the history of contemporary art that many other artists have recognised in his drifts and potentialities

Hiroshi Sugimoto De la existencia de la realidad —Rosa Olivares

ara Hiroshi Sugimoto la fotografía es la confirmación de que el mundo existe realmente. Aunque no totalmente. Según él mismo dice, lo que realmente hace con sus fotografías es crear una especie de modelo del mundo y así confirmar su existencia. La realidad es que la filosofía de Sugimoto tiene mucho más que ver con la idea oriental de la fotografía y de la realidad que con la que se tiene en la fotografía occidental, especialmente la contemporánea. Su trabajo se basa en la exploración de la intersección entre la naturaleza, la historia y la percepción humana. Para él es esencial la relación con la naturaleza, con el tiempo, con la luz y la oscuridad. A través de su trabajo de más de cuatro décadas, Sugimoto trabaja en el borde de lo real y de su apariencia, investigando no solo a través de la técnica y del lenguaje de la fotografía, sino yendo mucho más allá, desmenuzando la apariencia de lo real y de su representación. Lo que para él se resume en una doble trampa: una doble mentira puede construir una verdad, igual que la negación de una negación se convierte en una afirmación.

Para entender su obra y percibir su importancia en la fotografía actual hay que alejarse de la idea de tendencia, de narración, de documento, y de alguna manera pararse a pensar en el mundo, en la naturaleza de las cosas y en nuestra relación con ellas, para poder alcanzar mejor el punto inicial de la sabiduría y la capacidad de contemplación de su trabajo. Sugimoto trabaja siempre en series que, aunque tienen un inicio concreto, se prolongan en el tiempo durante décadas. Hay series que, aún antes de tomar una sola fotografía, le ocupan años,

como en la serie de Seascapes (1980 en adelante), para la que recorrió gran parte del mundo, costas, acantilados, gran parte de esa geografía que limita el fin de la tierra y el comienzo del mar, allí donde se puede ver el horizonte limpia y definidamente. Solo esa línea del horizonte es lo que él quería fotografiar. Con imágenes construidas durante más de tres horas de exposición. Igual hará con la serie Light, fotografías en blanco y negro de la llama de una vela, sobre una serie de pinturas de Gerhard Richter. La luz que él estudia a partir del blanco y negro aparece sistemáticamente en su obra, en una fotografía en blanco y negro, analógica, positivada por él mismo, en la que el blanco, los diferentes negros y los grises son esenciales, como la realidad y la mentira, como el tiempo y su cuidado.

Su primer trabajo lo realiza en el Museo Natural de Historia de Nueva York, fotografiando los dioramas de escenas de animales. Es 1975 cuando realiza esas imágenes de animales en su entorno natural, cazando, pastando… todos están muertos y disecados, pero en sus fotos aparecen como seres vivos. Desde entonces, durante décadas de experimentación en la técnica fotográfica, ha creado un conjunto de obra no solo ingente, sino con unas características únicas: una obra que se origina en una mente que pone a prueba los límites de la realidad.

Sus imágenes nos sitúan en los límites entre lo real y la fantasía, entre la verdad y la ficción, entre la vida y la muerte; al contemplarlas Sugimoto nos obliga a colocarnos en el borde de nuestro mundo y de la percepción de la naturaleza. Hay que decir que, desde 1975 hasta los primeros años del siglo xxi,

todas sus series son en blanco y negro, todas ellas fotografiadas con una cámara de gran tamaño, y con unas exposiciones muy largas, muchas de ellas de más de tres o cuatro horas. En el más puro estilo de la fotografía más clásica.

Luego, es él mismo quien trabaja con los negativos y su positivado, Hiroshi Sugimoto se reconoce como el último fotógrafo analógico vivo. Pero toda su obra está basada en la experimentación con el lenguaje y la técnica fotográfica. De todos los fotógrafos contemporáneos, ninguno es tan riguroso como Sugimoto en la exploración de la naturaleza de la fotografía como medio.

Su segunda gran serie (1978 en adelante) es Theaters, en la que fotografía en una sola imagen la proyección de una serie de películas en teatros vacíos. La primera fue Fiebre del sábado noche (Saturday Night Fever). La exposición de la película durante todo el metraje de la película solamente produce la imagen brillante de la pantalla. Y comprobó que cada película produce un brillo diferente en la pantalla. Nuevamente la luz y la oscuridad del teatro, de su platea, sus butacas, todo existe simplemente para que veamos el vacío, la luz de la pantalla. En 1999 inicia su serie de Wax Portraits, en museos de figuras de cera, que inicia con Enrique VIII y alguna de sus esposas, como Ana

Bolena, y que prolongará hasta Lady Di, Dalí, Bonaparte… Una vez más la ficción se hace realidad. Retratos en blanco y negro, tomados en una aproximación de tres cuartos, iluminados como un retrato de alguien vivo. Si la gente cree que una fotografía es una evidencia de una presencia, la fotografía se convierte en un engaño con su apariencia de realidad. Estos personajes aparecen vivos, en movimiento en sus cuerpos de cera.

Una doble mentira fuerza una verdad.

El color aparecerá momentáneamente en 2002, cuando consigue el original del libro de Isaac Newton, Opticks, de 1704, sobre cómo la separación de la luz crea los 7 colores. Pero, como Sugimoto cuenta, en Japón los nombres de los colores no son siete, sino más de mil. En su serie los colores se cuentan por cientos, como todas sus series. Diversas formas de contar los colores, el tiempo, la realidad. Para Sugimoto la fotografía puede ser una máquina en el tiempo para estudiar etapas anteriores de la mente humana, y es ese aspecto filosófico que subyace en todo su trabajo el que él afirma que le hace seguir preguntándose a sí mismo “¿Qué es la consciencia? ¿Qué es el universo? ¿Por qué estamos nosotros aquí ahora?”. Seguramente tardaremos mucho más tiempo en comprender su trabajo en su entera importancia

I

n Hiroshi Sugimoto’s eyes, photography is confirmation that the world really exists, albeit not completely. As he himself says, it is an art form that allows him to create some sort of model of the world to confirm its existence.

The reality is that Sugimoto’s philosophy has a lot more to do with the oriental idea of photography and reality than the western one, especially contemporary photography.

His work is based on the exploration of the area where nature, history and human perception intersect. What is essential for him is the relationship with nature, time, light and darkness. In his more than four decades of work, Sugimoto has operated on the edge of what is real and its appearance, investigating through the technique and language of photography but also going much further, analysing the appearance of reality and its representation in

great detail. This boils down for him into a double trap: two lies can make a truth, just as the negation of a negation can become an affirmation.

To understand Sugimoto’s work and its importance in modern photography, we have to move away from the idea of trends, narration and documents, and think in some way about the world, the nature of things and our relationship with them.

Only this way can we gain a deeper insight into the source of the wisdom and capacity for contemplation in his work.

Sugimoto’ series may have a specific starting point, but they stretch on for decades. He devotes years to some before even taking a single photograph, such as Seascapes (from 1980 onwards), for which he travelled extensively around the world, taking in coastlines, cliffs and large parts of the geography where land and sea meet, where the horizon can clearly

be seen. That line of the horizon was all he wanted to photograph, with images created with an exposure time in excess of three hours.

He would do the same with Light, a series of black and white photos of a candle flame, based on paintings by Gerhard Richter.

The light he studies through black and white appears systematically here, in a black and white analogue photograph that he himself developed and in which the white and various blacks and greys are essential, like reality and lies, like time and the conserving of it.

His first work involved photographing wildlife dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, in 1975. Though the animals portrayed hunting and grazing in their natural habitat are dead, stuffed, Sugimoto gives them the appearance of being alive.

photographic techniques, he has created a vast and unique body of work, one that has emerged from a mind that tests the boundaries of reality.

His images place us on the boundary between reality and fantasy, between fact and fiction, life and death, and in contemplating them, Sugimoto take us to the edge of our world and the perception of nature.

His series from 1975 through to the early years of the 21st century are all in black and white, all of them captured with a large-format camera and very long exposure times – in excess of three or four hours on many occasions, in the purest possible expression of photography in its most traditional form.

Recognised as the last living analogue photographer, Sugimoto works with the negatives and develops them. His entire oeuvre is based, however, on experimentation with photographic language and technique. No contemporary photographer is as meticulous as Sugimoto when it comes to exploring the characteristics of their chosen art form as a medium.

His second great series (from 1978 onwards) is Theaters, in which he captures the interiors of empty cinemas and theatres using the projection of a movie as the only lighting.

The first such venue was Saturday Night Fever, and in leaving the shutter open for the entire duration of the movie he creates the bright screen in the image. He found that each film created a different level of brightness. Once

again, the light and darkness of the theatre, its stalls and seats, exist only to show us the void, the light of the screen.

In 1999, Sugimoto began Wax Portraits, a series of images of wax museum figures that begins with Henry VIII and some of his wives, among them Anne Boleyn, and takes in the likes of Lady Di, Salvador Dalí and Napoleon. Once again, fiction becomes reality: three-quarter portraits in black and white, lit as if an actual person is depicted. If people believe that a photograph is proof of a presence, then it becomes a deception, with its appearance of reality. These figures seem to be alive. Their wax bodies appear to be moving and alive. Two lies make a truth.

Colour made a momentary appearance in 2002, when he came across an original copy of Isaac Newton’s 1704 book Opticks, on the physicist’s seven-colour spectrum. Yet as Sugimoto tells us, colours have over a thousand names in Japan, not just seven.

In this series, as in all of them, colours can be counted in their hundreds. His series present various ways of counting colours, time and reality. For Sugimoto, photography is a time machine for delving back into the stages of the human mind, a philosophical exercise that underlies his entire oeuvre and leads him to continually ask: “What is consciousness? What is the universe? Why are we here now?”

It will surely be a long time yet before we come to understand the importance of his work in full

Thomas Ruff Ontología fotográfica —Rosa Olivares

a serie que convirtió a Thomas Ruff en una referencia inevitable de la nueva fotografía europea fue una serie de retratos de gran formato (Porträts, 1981 en adelante) y en color de una serie de personas de su generación: es decir, jóvenes alemanes entre 25 y 35 años, de clase media. Sus compañeros de estudios y sus amigos, y los amigos de sus amigos. Unas fotos topológicamente iguales a las de tantos carnets o fichas, pero en un formato grande (muy grande para los primeros años de la década de los 80) y en color. Los retratados aparecen sin nada que les identifique. Mirando fijamente a la cámara, en ambientes vacíos. Enseguida se le vincula con las series de August Sanders, retratos de personas en sus oficios, identificados por el nombre y el oficio y en ambientes que definen quienes son, en blanco y negro y pequeño formato. Dos épocas, dos siglos, dos generaciones de alemanes: una clasificación social, dijeron algunos. Pero esa serie había empezado años atrás, en blanco y negro y pequeño formato, de esas imágenes nunca se supo nada más.

Tampoco de sus primeros paisajes. Otras series, alguna anterior como Interieurs, interiores de las casas de esos mismos personajes de sus retratos, en pequeño formato, irían apareciendo lentamente.

Después Häuser (1987-1991), retratos de edificios característicos. Ruff diría de ellos ”este tipo de edificios representan más o menos la ideología y la economía en la República Federal Alemana en los pasados treinta años”.

Mirar el mundo, las cosas, y fotografiarlas es una forma de comprensión, de acercamiento a las cosas, y a las ideas que las forman. Aunque el artista no da mucha información, simples huellas aparecen en sus títulos, como criptogramas para aquellos que pueden alcanzar la comprensión de esas imágenes, títulos como Jpeg pt01; phg.s 05; m.a.r.s. 17; d.o.pe.

13 I entre otros. Pero por supuesto todo tiene su razón, en los temas, en el método o en sus influencias.

Por ejemplo la serie d.o.pe. se basa en The Doors of Perception de Aldous Huxley, en la que se habla de las experiencias extrasensoriales. Ruff trabaja sobre los límites de la percepción humana y la utilización de la tecnología digital, y sus referencias son las obras de Jerónimo Bosco y Matthias Grünewald, y de experiencias con ciertas drogas.

6 preguntas a Thomas Ruff Tu primera serie, Interieurs y Porträts, trata sobre lo que conoces, parte de tu vida cotidiana: las habitaciones de las casas de tu época, tus compañeros de estudios... Pero en tus series posteriores tratas de arquitectura, paisaje, los desnudos, los objetos, las abstracciones, el espacio, Marte y el cosmos. Has utilizado internet, fotografías de otros, del Observatorio Europeo Austral... ¿Hay algún vínculo entre estas series consecutivas?

Quizás pueda decir que al comienzo de mi carrera me interesaba fotografiar el mundo que me rodeaba. Pero en cierto momento me di cuenta de que la fotografía artística solo cubre una pequeña parte de nuestro mundo, así que amplié mi práctica a la fotografía no artística, que me pareció más auténtica e interesante. El hilo conductor en mis diferentes series es un examen y análisis de las imágenes fotográficas.

Sin duda, eres una de las grandes influencias en la fotografía actual, pero ¿cuáles fueron tus influencias y quiénes son hoy tus artistas de referencia.

Como ser humano de nuestra época, todo es importante: la política, la naturaleza, la sociedad y todos los medios que influyen o manipulan nuestra conciencia. Los artistas que trabajan sobre estos problemas son una parte importante de mi interés.

En los años 80 estudiaste con Bernd y Hilla Becher y formaste parte de un grupo de jóvenes fotógrafos que acabarían convirtiéndose en figuras destacadas. ¿Qué otros fotógrafos os interesaban en ese momento?

Los años 80 fueron una época importante y única. Creo que lo que ocurrió

entonces fue irrepetible. Pero, por supuesto, hubo un grupo de artistas en Vancouver con Jeff Wall y Rodney Graham, y en Nueva York un grupo con Cindy Sherman y Richard Prince, cuyo trabajo realmente apreciábamos. ¿Qué diferencias puedes señalar entre la escena artística y su relación con la fotografía hace 40 años, en 1980, cuando empezabas, y hoy en 2025?

Tal vez el éxito de nuestro trabajo hizo que la fotografía se volviera muy popular, por lo que en 2025 hay más artistas trabajando con fotografía.

La modernización de la fotografía en los años 70 y 80 fue obra de jóvenes artistas que la utilizaron como herramienta para construir formalmente sus ideas, no de los fotógrafos clásicos o documentalistas de prensa. Es algo natural. No hay una única manera de fotografiar, hay un número infinito, o tantas como personas que trabajan con una cámara.

Hoy en día, la fotografía se ha expandido hasta ocupar prácticamente todo el espacio, pero ¿crees que este exceso mejora la percepción de la fotografía como arte o, por el contrario, la dificulta?

Como ya he dicho, la fotografía artística solo cubre una pequeña parte de lo que existe en el mundo. No importa si una fotografía fue tomada con intención artística o no. Lo que cuenta es la calidad de la imagen

Thomas Ruff Photographic ontology —Rosa Olivares

orträts (from 1981 onwards) was the series that established Thomas Ruff as a prominent exponent of new European photography. It comprises large-format colour portraits of people of his generation, namely young, middleclass Germans aged between 25 and 35: fellow students, friends, and friends of friends. Though similar in style to passport photos, they are much larger, and very large indeed for the early 1980s.

There is nothing in them that identifies the subjects, who look straight at the camera and have blank backdrops behind them. They are reminiscent of August Sanders’ series of people going about their jobs, identified by their names and occupations and depicted in surroundings that define who they are. Sanders’ portraits are small in size and in black and white.

Two eras, two centuries, two generations of German people. Some called it “social classification”. Ruff’s series had begun years earlier, however, in black and white and small format. Those images were never seen or heard of again, nor were his first landscapes.

Other series slowly began to appear, some of them earlier, such as Interieurs, which showed the houses of the figures in his portraits, all in small format. Then came Häuser (1987-1991), portraits of typical buildings, of which Ruff said: “Buildings like this more or less represent the ideology and economy of the Federal Republic of Germany over the last 30 years.”

What we have here is an ontological study of German reality, the construction of a typology that grew in tandem with the development of the artist’s eye. The problem, and the solution to the problem, was to be the sheer voraciousness

of Ruff’s eye, which from that point on took in a whole range of themes, formats and technologies.

Extending beyond Germany and the world even, it embraced the cosmos, Mars, the past and the future, and all forms of manipulation.

To look at the world, at things, and photograph them is a way of understanding and approaching them and the ideas that lie behind.

Although the artist provides little in the way of information, the merest traces begin to appear in his titles, like encoded messages for anyone able to gain any insight into these images. They include Jpeg pt01, phg.s 05, m.a.r.s. 17, and d.o.pe. 13 I. But everything is there for a reason, of course: his themes, method, and influences.

For example, d.o.pe. is a series based on Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, in which he speaks of extra-sensory experiences. Ruff operates on the edges of human perception and the use of digital technology, and his points of reference are the works of Hieronymus Bosch and Matthias Grünewald, not to mention his experiences with certain drugs.

In going about his work, Ruff builds answers to questions we are not party to. He moves from one series to another because he finds everything suggestive, feels the urge to study it, which he does through photography.

The result is a cryptic body of work that we followers of Ruff break down, analyse and observe with a mix of curiosity and surprise at his incredible range of forms, concepts, ideas, themes and photographic solutions. Some have sought to define him on the basis of a single series, but in actual fact it is just one footprint on a never-ending path

Just 6 question to Thomas Ruff Your first series, Interieurs and Porträts, are about what you know, part of your everyday life: the rooms of the houses of your time, your fellow students... But in your later series you really deal with architecture, landscape, nudes, objects, abstractions, space, mars and the cosmos, you have used the internet, photographs from others, from the European Southern Observatory... is there any link between these consecutive series?

Maybe I can say that at the beginning of my career, I was interested in photographing the world around me. but at a certain point I realized that artistic photography only covers a small part of our world and so I expanded my practice to nonartistic photography, which I found more authentic and interesting.

The common thread in my different series is an examination and analysis of photographic images.

You are undoubtedly one of the great influences on photography today, but what were your influences, and who are your reference artists today?

As a human being in our time, everything is important - politics, nature, society and all media that influence or manipulate our consciousness. Artists who work on these problems are an important part of my interest.

In the 1980s, you were studying with Bernd & Hilla Becher and were part of a group of young photographers who would all become leading figures. What other photographers were you interested in at that time?

The 1980s were an important and unique time. I think what happened then was unique. But of course there was a group of artists in Vancouver with Jeff Wall and Rodney Graham and in New York a group with Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince whose work we really appreciated.

What differences can you point out between the art scene and its relation to photography 40 years ago, in 1980, when you were starting out, and today in 2025?

so there are more artists working with photography in 2025.

The modernisation of photography in the 70s and 80s was the work of young artists who used photography as a tool to formally construct their ideas, not the classical photographers or the press documentarists; however, now, all photographic languages are mixed in today's art scene. What is your opinion on this?

That's only natural. There's not just one way to photograph, there is an infinite number, or as many as there are people who work with a camera.

Nowadays photography has expanded to practically occupy the whole space, but do you think that this excess improves the perception of photography as art or on the contrary hinders it?

As I have already said: artistic photography only covers a small part of what exists in the world. it doesn't matter whether a photograph was taken with artistic intent or not. What counts is the quality of the image

Gregory Crewdson El misterio de lo cotidiano —Rosa Olivares

ara comprender la obra de un artista siempre es importante conocer las características de la infancia. Y no solo de la vida de los artistas del Renacimiento, también, y tal vez especialmente, de los artistas contemporáneos. Sin embargo la actual crítica no parece muy interesada al respecto, y todavía la historia no se ocupa de los artistas vivos. Gregory Crewdson es uno de los pocos artistas de su generación que elige la fotografía como medio para su trabajo desde el principio y sin dudas. Desde los diez años, cuando descubre la obra de Diane Arbus, la elección parece cerrada. Visto desde hoy podemos pensar que la forma en que Arbus mostraba el horror a través de las personas más corrientes, en lugares corrientes, impregnó al Crewdson niño. Un niño de familia media, que veraneaba y vivía en barriadas periféricas, con un padre psicólogo… ¿Puede haber algo más terrorífico que la normalidad?

Su primer trabajo, su proyecto final en la Escuela de Bellas Artes, consistió en una serie de retratos de sus vecinos de la zona de Massachusetts donde veraneaba con su familia: unas cabañas de un barrio de los suburbios, como los que más tarde serían los escenarios de sus fotografías. Su primera serie, Natural Wonder (1992-1997), serán fotografías de pequeños animales, cadáveres mutilados y fragmentados presentados en entornos domésticos. Estos conceptos que conforman su obra, como lo cotidiano, lo doméstico, lo terrorífico o lo inexplicable, son aparentemente contradictorios, opuestos: por un lado la normalidad, por otro lo siniestro, algo que sentimos terrible y que no puede tardar en aparecer. Esa es la base de una obra que va creciendo según se suceden sus series. El artista aclara su fascinación por lo siniestro: “Probablemente lo que más me asusta es

la realidad. Cuando una representación está separada del mundo, se vuelve poética o hermosa sin esfuerzo”.

Lo normal suele ser bastante poco normal.

Crewdson es un “fotógrafo nativo”, es decir, su construcción de la imagen es connatural a su memoria vital, todo está aprendido de forma natural, de la experiencia desde la infancia. Su obra es una forma de mirar aprendida viendo cine, viendo fotografía. Su trabajo se basa en una narración visual, en la que cada detalle, cada objeto, cada centímetro de luz, cada color y cada gesto es esencial. Todo está medido, probado, controlado. Realmente cada una de sus imágenes es una historia completa sintetizada en una sola imagen.

Nosotros solo vemos el resultado final, una imagen que pretende condensar todo el misterio, toda la trama, en una sola escena. Crewdson es no solo el fotógrafo, sino el constructor de ese momento.

Partiendo de una idea, de un guion, se construye cada imagen con un plan perfectamente definido y un equipo propio de un rodaje cinematográfico, donde el artista es el director: iluminación, maquillaje, guardarropa, equipo de producción, director de fotografía… Tomar cada fotografía puede ser un trabajo de semanas, meses. Es todo lo que está detrás de una producción, al otro lado de la pantalla.

Es cine sin movimiento. Una narración a través de la puesta en escena, de la creación de una atmósfera pensada detenidamente hasta en el último detalle. No hay nada más alejado de ese famoso “instante decisivo” en la fotografía que la obra de Gregory Crewdson. Esa es su más destacada característica: él produce ese instante y lo convierte en su obra. El arte del siglo xx (y por el momento cada vez más del siglo xxi) es el cine, es el lenguaje más cercano al habitante de la sociedad actual.

Venimos de la fotografía para encontrarnos finalmente con el cine. Son muchos los fotógrafos que saltan al cine, al vídeo, pero Crewdson no necesita dar ese salto, al menos no todavía, porque ya hace cine con su fotografía: en ella está el misterio inherente a todo un estilo de hacer cine. Todo lo que hemos visto en las grandes películas que nos han formado la mirada.

Un aspecto del que se habla menos es el de la importancia del color en

la fotografía de Crewdson. Aunque parte de su obra está en blanco y negro, es en el color donde alcanza su máxima dimensión. Es el color lo que le permite utilizar la realidad no como un fin en sí mismo, sino como un punto de partida desde el que demostrar el poder emocional y cultural de la imagen, incluso disolviendo la línea que separa el documento y la ficción. Es el color lo que ha cambiado la misma naturaleza de la imagen fotográfica, transformándola

en el medio artístico dominante en la realidad. Lejos ya de la idea del blanco y negro como lenguaje puramente artístico. El auge de las tecnologías digitales es lo que finalmente impulsa que la fotografía adopte claramente los matices, la escala e incluso los temas de la ficción cinematográfica en una evolución formal de un núcleo narrativo que está presente en la fotografía desde su nacimiento: el misterio, lo desconocido que está detrás de cada imagen.

La fotografía congela la acción, la vida, la conecta con la muerte, y en esa fricción salta el misterio; y eso es lo que consigue Crewdson en cada una de sus imágenes, en las que no pasa nada, pero sabemos que hay algo más que lo que vemos. Esas figuras hieráticas que miran fijamente, el uso dramático de la luz, los juegos de espejos y ventanas, de interior y exterior. Todo nos trae a la memoria una tradición visual muy americana de la

pintura contemporánea (Edward Hopper, Ed Ruscha) y sobre todo del cine (Steven Spielberg, David Lynch); todo nos dirige a una narración condensada en una sola y única imagen. La característica narrativa de la fotografía es diferente de las formas narrativas del cine o de la literatura, pero está vinculada con ellas: la ambigüedad de crear un momento único, exento de un antes y un después, sin palabras, sin sonido, es más inquietante, no aclara la situa-

ción, no cuenta finalmente nada, y por lo tanto deja al espectador la posibilidad de completarla. El propio Crewdson lo resume, finalmente: “Me interesa este momento ambiguo que atrae al espectador a través de la belleza fotográfica, a través de la repulsión, a través de algún tipo de tensión"

Gregory Crewdson The mystery of the everyday —Rosa Olivares

T

o understand the work of an artist – and this applies not just to the artists of the Renaissance, but also, and perhaps especially, to contemporary artists – it is important to have an insight into their childhood. The art critics of today do not seem at all interested in such details, however, while history has yet to take an interest in living artists.

Gregory Crewdson is one of the few artists of his generation to choose photography as their preferred medium right from the outset and without hesitation. From his discovery of the work of Diane Arbus at the age of ten, the choice was clear.

We can deduce that the way in which Arbus depicted horror through the most ordinary of people in ordinary places resonated with the young Crewdson. For a young boy from a middleclass family that lived and spent its summers in suburban neighbourhoods and whose father was a psychologist, what could be more terrifying than normality?

His first work – his Master of Fine Arts thesis – was a series of portraits of his neighbours from the Massachusetts town where he and his family would go for their summer holidays, taken in cabins on the outskirts, like the ones that would provide the settings for later photographs.

His first series, Natural Wonder (1992-97), comprises photographs of small animals and

body parts presented in domestic settings.

The concepts showcased in his work, such as the everyday, the domestic, the terrifying and the inexplicable, are seeming contradictions, opposites – on the one hand is normality, on the other the sinister, which we sense to be awful and imminent. This is the foundation for a series that grew in size.

Shedding light on his fascination with the macabre, the artist said: “Ultimately, probably what scares me most is reality. When it’s a representation, when it’s separate from the world, it more effortlessly becomes poetic or beautiful.”

What is normal is usually anything but normal.

Crewdson is a “native photographer”, in other words, his construction of the image is innate to his vital memory. Everything is learned naturally, from experience acquired since childhood.

His work is a way of looking learned from watching films and contemplating photos. It is based on a visual narration in which every detail, every object, every centimetre of light, every colour and every gesture is essential. Everything is measured, tested and controlled.

In reality, each of his photographs is a story in itself, synthesised in a single image.

We see only the end result, an image into which the entire mystery, the whole plot, is condensed, in a single scene.

Crewdson is not just the photographer but the creator of that moment. Working from an idea, a script, he builds each image according to a plan that is perfectly mapped out and using a set-up worthy of a film set, where the artist is also the director: lighting, make-up, wardrobe, production team, director of photography, etc. A single photograph can be weeks, months even, in the making. This is everything that lies behind a production, on the other side of the lens.

It is cinema without movement, narration through staging, the creation of an atmosphere that is thought-out down to the last detail.

Nothing in photography is further from the “decisive moment” than Crewdson’s work. And that is his defining characteristic: he produces that moment and turns it into his work.

The art form of the 20th century – and increasingly it would seem of the 21st – is cinema, its language the most relatable to the inhabitants of modern society. We come from photography and find ourselves with cinema. Many photographers jump over to film and video, though Crewdson is in no need of following them – not yet at least. He makes cinema with his photography. In it resides the mystery inherent in a style of filmmaking, of what we have seen in the great films that inform our outlook on life.

One feature of Crewdson’s work that is less commented upon is the importance of colour. Although part of his oeuvre is in black and white, it acquires its fullest dimension in colour, which allows him to use reality not as an end in itself but as a starting point from which to demonstrate the emotional and cultural power of the image, with even the line separating document from fiction being dissolved.

It is colour that has changed the very nature of the photographic image, converting it into reality’s most dominant artistic medium, far removed from the idea of black and white as a purely artistic language.

The boom in digital technologies has ultimately led to photography adopting the nuances, scale and even themes of cinematographic fiction in a formal development of a narrative core that has resided in photography since its inception – the mystery and the unknown that lies behind every image.

Photography freezes action, life, connecting it with death, creating mystery in that friction between the two. That is what Crewdson achieves in each of his images, in which nothing happens but where we know that there is more than what meets the eye.

The inexpressive figures – staring intently – the dramatic use of light, the play of mirrors and windows, interior and exterior: everything recalls the visual tradition of uniquely American contemporary painting (Edward Hopper and Ed Ruscha) and, above all, the movies (Steven Spielberg and David Lynch).

Everything leads us to a narration condensed into a single, unique image. Though photography offers a different form of narrative to cinema or literature, it is linked to them. The ambiguity of creating a specific moment without a before and after, without words or sound, is more troubling. It does not clarify the situation and relates nothing in the end, opening up to the viewer the possibility of completing it.

Crewdson sums it up thus: “I’m interested in this ambiguous moment that draws the viewer in through photographic beauty, through repulsion, through some kind of tension.”

The Bears es un proyecto fotográfico que desafía cuestiones de percepción de género a través de la representación de un grupo de mujeres que formaron parte del equipo de rugby de la Universidad de Brown entre 2013 y 2015. Estas jugadoras han decidido unirse a un deporte que, además de retarlas a superar sus límites físicos y mentales, las introduce a una nueva comunidad con una identidad fuerte que les permite explorar su propia identidad libre de prejuicios. La intención de esta serie radica en dar mayor visibilidad a deportistas que, con su presencia en un campo mayoritariamente dominado por hombres, ponen en cuestión cómo definimos lo masculino y lo femenino. Aquellas que practican este deporte son a menudo asociadas con estereotipos masculinos y encasilladas en prejuicios sobre su sexualidad e identidad. Estas fotografías nos invitan a cuestionarnos qué significa ser una mujer que juega al rugby y qué determina que un deporte sea visto bajo la lupa de una percepción de género en concreto.

Alejandra Carles-Tolrá es una artista fotográfica, profesora y mediadora barcelonesa afincada en Londres, cuyo trabajo se centra en las cuestiones que definen nuestras identidades y el papel que desempeña el grupo en nuestra búsqueda de pertenencia. Su obra ha sido expuesta y publicada internacionalmente en instituciones como la National Portrait Gallery, Photo Miyota, The Guardian, FotoFever, Somerset House, el Museo Finlandés de Fotografía, el Museo de Arte de Wuhan, PhotoEspaña y los premios Jerwood/Photoworks. Su obra también forma parte de colecciones privadas y públicas como la Arts Council Collection de Inglaterra y la Col·lecció Nacional de Fotografía de Catalunya.

The Bears is a photographic project that challenges issues of gender perception through the representation of a group of womxn who were part of the Brown University rugby team between 2013 and 2015. These players have chosen to join a sport that, in addition to challenging them to push their physical and mental limits, introduces them to a new community with a strong identity that allows them to explore their own identity free of prejudice. The intention of this series is to give greater visibility to sportswomxn who, with their presence in a field that is mostly dominated by men, question how we define masculine and feminine. Those who practice this sport are often associated with male stereotypes and pigeonholed in prejudices about their sexuality and identity. These photographs invite us to question what it means to be a womxn playing rugby and what determines whether a sport is seen through the lens of a particular gender perception.

Alejandra Carles-Tolrá is a London-based photographic artist, teacher and mediator from Barcelona, whose work focuses on the questions that define our identities and the role that the group plays in our search for belonging. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally at institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery, Photo Miyota, The Guardian, FotoFever, Somerset House, the Finnish Museum of Photography, Wuhan Art Museum, PhotoEspaña and the Jerwood/ Photoworks Awards. Her work also forms part of private and public collections such as the Arts Council Collection in England and the Col·lecció Nacional de Fotografía de Catalunya. Petrus nace de la oportunidad que tuvo la artista de acceder a la antigua casa de su ex vecino y explorarla con total libertad. A medida que iba descubriendo su espacio, tenía la impresión de poder verle de niño, de adolescente, de estudiante, de ingeniero, de marido. Albrecht con chaqueta. Sintió la construcción de una forma y, ligada a esta forma, una pérdida íntima. La herida derivada de todo lo nuestro que dejamos atrás en el momento en que describimos quiénes somos.

La obra nació en casa de Albrecht y luego continuó fuera, en la búsqueda de formas. Petrus trata sobre el impulso humano de definirnos a nosotros mismos y al mundo a través de una forma definida. Pero las formas nunca son estables. Son el resultado siempre cambiante de tensiones y presiones interminables. A través de un análisis cínico, tierno y arbitrario de lo que probablemente no se puede cortar en rodajas, Catastini juega con arquetipos e imágenes considerando el modo en que nos esculpen y dan forma a nuestros puntos de vista. Petrus comes from the opportunity the artist had to access her ex neighbour’s former house and to explore it in total freedom. As she went on discovering his space, she had the impression she could see him as a child, a teenager, a student, an engineer, a husband. Albrecht in a jacket. She felt the construction of a form. And, linked to this form, an intimate loss. The wound stemming from everything about us which we leave behind the moment we describe who we are.

The work was born at Albrecht’s place and then continued outside, in the search for forms. Petrus is about the human drive to define ourselves and the world through a definite form.

Forms are never stable though. They are the ever-changing result of never-ending tensions and pressures. Through a cynical, tender, and arbitrary analysis of what probably cannot be sliced and diced, Catastini plays with archetypes and images considering the way they sculpt ourselves and shape our views. Looking for subtle discrepancies these images try to go beyond their figurative meaning in order to activate new analogies and connotations.

Francesca Catastini is a photographer based in Tuscany. Raised in a family with a strong scientific background, she developed an early interest for ethology and medicine, but shifter her interest towards keeping images, instead of things. Holding a MA in Photography and Visual Design in Milan in 2009, she has published several books and participated in national and international exhibitions. Her work has won the ViennaPhotoBookAward 2016, ITmakES Art at PHotoESPAÑA 2019 and the Gibellina PhotoRoad Project 2019

Desde el ataque de Rusia a Ucrania, se ha vuelto a cerrar un telón de acero en medio de Europa. ¿Qué se siente al tener a Rusia como vecino? ¿Qué significa vivir ahora, en este momento, en este punto de ruptura mundial? ¿Cómo es la vida cotidiana de las personas que permanecen invisibles en los mapas?

En Iron Curtain Kepesz se embarcó en un viaje por cinco países, desde Estonia hasta Ucrania, para explorar las realidades de la vida en medio de la tensión geopolítica. Por el camino, se encontró con jóvenes que lidiaban con un futuro incierto, personas mayores atormentadas por el espectro de la repetición de la historia y niños a los que se enseñaba la terrible necesidad de manejar armas de fuego. Esta expedición desvela un mundo a menudo ignorado, pero que se encuentra en el corazón de nuestro continente.

La fotógrafa polaca Natalia Kepesz vive y trabaja en Berlín, donde se licenció en estudios culturales e Historia del Arte y estudió fotografía tanto en Berlín como en Leipzig. Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, an Iron Curtain has closed again in the middle of Europe. How does it feel to have Russia as a neighbor? What does it mean to live now, at this time, at this global breaking point? What does everyday life look like for people who remain invisible on maps?

Kepesz embarked on a journey through five countries, spanning from Estonia to Ukraine, to explore the realities of life amidst geopolitical tension. Along the way, she encountered young individuals grappling with uncertain futures, older individuals haunted by the specter of history repeating itself, and children being taught the grim necessity of handling firearms. This expedition unveils a world often overlooked—yet one that lies at the heart of our continent.

The polish photographer Natalia Kepesz lives and works in Berlin, where she graduated in cultural studies and History of Art and studied photography both in Berlin and Leipzig. She uses photography as a means of self-expression to identify with hidden qualities of her character, to better understand her reality, and to express her interpretation of the world around her. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has won several prizes such as the World Press Photo Contest 2021 Portrait Series, Portraits- Hellerau Photography Award 2021, Prize winner of Les Boutographies (Rencontres photographiques de Montpellier) 2021, the Nikon Grant 2023 and was the exhibition winner of Belfast Photo Festival 2021 and Photo Israel 2021

Marisol Méndez Cochabamba, Bolivia, 1991

Madre y Padre son los últimos dos proyectos que la fotógrafa boliviana Marisol Méndez ha estado desarrollando en los últimos años.

Madre desafía la mirada machista y clasista que impera en Bolivia, explorando la influencia del colonialismo y la religión en la percepción de la mujer boliviana. Partiendo de imágenes de su archivo familiar, subvierte iconos católicos colocándolos en relación a la cultura andina. Situadas entre el documental y la ficción, las mujeres encarnan una multiplicidad de versiones de los arquetipos de La Virgen María y María Magdalena a modo de protesta ante representaciones injustas que borran los matices de lo que significa ser mujer y reformulan su existencia desde la potencialidad, la mutación, la pérdida, la declinación y la muerte.

Por su parte, Padre desmonta la construcción de la masculinidad desde una mirada femenina, cuestionando el machismo arraigado en las culturas latinoamericanas. Toma como motivo central la caza y como punto de partida una colección de cartas que su padre le dejó antes de fallecer, en las que su abuelo reflexiona sobre su propia paternidad ausente y aconseja a sus hijos sobre "cómo ser un hombre". El proyecto examina las expresiones contemporáneas de la virilidad y su impacto en nuestras estructuras sociales, navegando la filiación y la ausencia, el consuelo y el conflicto, y la lucha interna entre las expectativas de dureza y contención emocional y el deseo de vulnerabilidad y conexión.

Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en numerosas exposiciones internacionales y ha recibido varios premios como el Photolucida’s 2020 Michael Reichmann Project Grant, PhMuseum 2021 Photography Grant New Generation Prize, Sony World Photography Award - Environment, PhMuseum 2024 Women Photographers Grant, Lucie Scholarship Program 2024 Fine Art y ambos proyectos formarán parte del Festival PhotoVogue y de Foam Talent en 2025

Madre and Padre are the latest two projects that Bolivian photographer Marisol Méndez has been developing in recent years.

Madre challenges the sexist and classist gaze that prevails in Bolivia, exploring the influence of colonialism and religion on the perception of Bolivian women. Using images from her family archive, she subverts Catholic icons by placing them in relation to Andean culture. Situated between documentary and fiction, the portrayed women embody a multiplicity of versions of the archetypes of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene as a protest against unfair representations that erase the nuances of what it means to be a woman and reformulate their existence from potentiality, mutation, loss, decline and death.

Father dismantles the construction of masculinity from a feminine point of view, questioning the sexism rooted in Latin American cultures. It takes hunting as its central motif and as its starting point a collection of letters that her father left her before his death, in which her grandfather reflects on his own absent fatherhood and advises his sons on ‘how to be a man’. The project examines contemporary expressions of manhood and their impact on our social structures, navigating sonship and absence, comfort and conflict, and the internal struggle between expectations of emotional toughness and containment and the desire for vulnerability and connection.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions and has received several awards including Photolucida's 2020 Michael Reichmann Project Grant, PhMuseum 2021 Photography Grant New Generation Prize, Sony World Photography Award - Environment, PhMuseum 2024 Women Photographers Grant, Lucie Scholarship Program 2024 Fine Art and both projects will be part of the PhotoVogue Festival and Foam Talent in 2025

At Least Until the World Stops Going Round es un proyecto muy personal del fotógrafo Charlie Tallot, quien recurrió a la fotografía como una forma de escapar de un periodo difícil de su vida, siendo interno en un centro de salud mental tras un intento de suicidio. Utilizando la fotografía como refugio y con la cámara como ventana momentánea a un mundo diferente, capta instantáneas de su vida cotidiana y de la gente que le rodea. La complejidad de la vida resuena en todas sus imágenes, con fugaces momentos tiernos, violentos, solitarios y raros, todos ellos transportados al desconcertante universo cargado de flashes de Tallott. Con una estética claramente sobresaturada, sus imágenes son dichosas pero difusas y parecen recuerdos medio olvidados o miradas robadas, más que fotografías de alta definición. Su calidad onírica, con un trasfondo eufórico, se desprende también del título, influenciado por aforismos que solía decir su madre, como "siempre te queda el mañana" y "siempre va a salir el sol", que encarnan la idea de que todas las cosas deben pasar, al tiempo que sirven de recordatorio para vivir el momento.

Su interés por la fotografía despertó durante la adolescencia, no a través de una formación formal, sino hojeando fotolibros en una librería local.

Esta experiencia transformó su comprensión del medio, revelando su potencial para fomentar la comunidad. Empezó a crear fanzines fotocopiados, adoptando un espíritu DIY que sigue influyendo en su obra. At Least Until the World Stops Going Round is a deeply personal project by Leeds photographer Charlie Tallot. He turned to photography as a form of escape from a difficult period of his life being a mental health intern following a suicide attempt. Using photography as a refuge and with the camera acting as a momentary window to a different world, he captures snapshots of his daily life and the people around him. The complexity of life resonates throughout his imagery, with fleeting tender, violent, lonely and rare moments all transported into Tallott’s mystifying, flash-laden universe. With a distinct over-saturated aesthetic, Tallot's images are blissful but hazy and resemble half forgotten memories or stolen glances, rather than high definition photographs. Their dreamlike quality, with an euphoric undertone follows its title, which was influenced by aphorisms his mother would say, such as ‘you've always got tomorrow’ and ‘the sun's always gonna come up’. This embodies the idea that all things must pass, while serving as a reminder to exist within the moment.

His interest in photography was sparked during his teenage years, not through formal training, but by browsing photobooks in a local bookshop. This experience transformed his understanding of the medium, revealing its potential to foster community. He began creating photocopied zines, embracing a DIY ethos that continues to influence his work. Just one year after graduating from Camberwell College of Arts with a degree in photography, he was named the 2024 London x Nikon Emerging Photographer of the Year and published his monograph through New Dimension

Arbus, Diane (Nueva York, Estados Unidos, 1923 – Greenwich, Estados Unidos, 1971) Figura clave en la historia de la fotografía, Diane Arbus rompió con los estándares de su época al retratar a quienes vivían en los márgenes de la sociedad. Fue alumna de Lisette Model y comenzó en la fotografía de moda junto a su esposo Allan Arbus.

Tras ver Freaks (1932) de Tod Browning, Arbus dejó atrás la fotografía de moda para centrarse en desarrollar un trabajo más documental, retratando a sujetos que le devuelven fijamente la mirada.

En 1963 recibió la prestigiosa beca Guggenheim y en 1967 expuso en el MoMA, consolidando su legado. Frank, Robert (Zurich, Suiza, 1924 – Nueva Escocia, Canadá, 2019) Hijo de padres judíos alemanes –su familia tuvo que cambiar de nacionalidad durante la II Guerra Mundial–, Frank llega en 1947 a Estados Unidos, aunque vivirá en París un tiempo, y se instalará en Canadá finalmente. Robert Frank une la tradición de la fotografía alemana y una mirada educada en la historia de una cultura europea, con la observación de una nueva sociedad. Su libro The Americans, publicado en París en 1958, marca un antes y un después en la historia de la fotografía. Sin duda es el libro de fotografía más influyente del siglo xx, en todo tipo de fotografías. Una beca, dos años de viaje en coche por Estados Unidos y 28.000 fotografías después –de las que el libro solo incluirá 83– The Americans se erige como una obra que hoy sigue siendo el marco definitorio de la fotografía contemporánea. En 1966 Ganó el Hasselblad Award y, además de sus grandes exposiciones y publicaciones, su trabajo tiene especial importancia en el cine, al que se dedicó especialmente desde que en 1959 publicaran este libro en Estados Unidos, realizando 20 películas hasta 2008.

Goldin, Nan (Washington, Estados Unidos, 1953) A veces a un artista le basta una sola obra para marcar una época, para hacer escuela. Es el caso de Nan Goldin con su Balada de la Dependencia Sexual, 1985. A través de instantáneas de su vida cotidiana en una proyección de diapositivas, con música de la época, nos muestra a “su familia”: los amantes, los amigos, los padres, los muertos y las relaciones tóxicas.

Retrata la época de auge del SIDA y la huella del suicidio de su hermana mayor desde una intimidad mostrada sin filtros. Su evolución hacia el cine (León de oro en el Festival de Cine de Vene-

cia en 2023) y el activismo político ha resignificado su lugar en el mundo de la cultura. Ganó el Hasselblad Award en 2007 y en 2022 el Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis, en Berlin. Hay obra suya en las colecciones del MoMA, el Guggenheim y el Metropolitan Museum of Art en Nueva York, en el Centre Pompidou de París o la Tate Modern de Londres, entre otras muchas instituciones.

Frank, Robert (Zurich, Switzerland, 1924 – Nova Scotia, Canada, 2019) Born to German-Jewish parents - who had to change their nationality during World War II - Frank arrived in the United States in 1947, later living in Paris before settling in Canada. Robert Frank combined the German photographic tradition with a European cultural perspective to observe a new society.

His book The Americans, published in Paris in 1958, marked a turning point in photographic history and remains the most influential photography book of the 20th century. A Guggenheim grant, two years of traveling across the U.S. by car, and 28,000 photographs - of which only 83 made it into the book - led to The Americans becoming a defining work in contemporary photography. In 1966, he won the Hasselblad Award and, beyond photography, Frank also made a significant impact on film, creating 20 films between 1959 and 2008.

Goldin, Nan (Washington, United States, 1953) Sometimes, a single work is enough to define an era and establish a legacy. This is the case with Nan Goldin’s The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1985).

Through snapshots of her everyday life presented as a slide show with music from the time, she depicts her "family"—lovers, friends, parents, the deceased, and toxic relationships.

Her work captures the AIDS crisis and the impact of her older sister’s suicide with raw intimacy.
