El mundo entero en un rincón Rosa Olivares

La arquitectura no es solamente ese paisaje construido lleno de grandes volúmenes inexplicables, firmados por nombres ilustres. La arquitectura es también, y tal vez sobre todo, una obra de arte, como una pintura, como una fotografía, en la que vivimos nosotros. La única obra de arte habitable, la obra de arte por definición. Sin embargo, la realidad nos dice todos los días que no es así. La mala construcción, la escasez económica, los malos arquitectos… La realidad desgraciadamente nos habla de que el arte hoy ya no es lo que era. Pero nuestra casa sigue siendo nuestro castillo, nuestro refugio. Es en sus rincones donde somos felices, nos sentimos seguros, donde somos realmente nosotros. Es en esas habitaciones donde Louis Khan establece el principio de la arquitectura, en esas simples estancias cuadradas, en ese teatro primordial de nuestras vidas, donde está la semilla de un edificio. Aunque en un edificio todas las viviendas sean iguales, una vez habitados cada habitación, cada espacio, cada rincón, es diferente, como un autorretrato de sus habitantes.

Los más grandes arquitectos lo saben, todo es arquitectura, pero no toda arquitectura es habitable. Igualmente no todo los interiores son hogares. Las iglesias, los hospitales, los bares… pueden ser tres ejemplos de interiores paralelos al hogar, lugares donde también nos refugiamos, donde nos expresamos como somos. Más o menos.

En la historia del arte los interiores tardan mucho en tener una vida independiente de las figuras. Durante mucho tiempo son las figuras, ya sean santos, vírgenes

o mecenas, apóstoles o reyes, los protagonistas de las obras; el interior es un simple paisaje de fondo, un decorado en donde surge la acción, donde el personaje es colocado. Pero llega un momento en el que con el cambio de costumbres, con el triunfo de las ciudades, con la llegada de la burguesía, la arquitectura llega al mundo de la pintura y los edificios empiezan a convertirse en algo esencial; poco a poco las casas por dentro, los hogares, son el lugar donde se celebran las fiestas y los rituales, donde las familias se reúnen, donde se lee y se come y se duerme, y donde se mira por las ventanas. Porque las ventanas son esenciales en los interiores. La relación entre el interior y el exterior sucede siempre alrededor de una ventana, de una puerta. Igual que para la mayor intimidad parecen imprescindibles unas cortinas, un sofá, una butaca, una cama… Cuando el poeta norteamericano Wallace Stevens pregunta “¿Qué porción de sol entra en tu habitación?” está hablando de esto, de cuánto del mundo exterior llega a entrar en tu mundo interior.

Hace ya mucho tiempo que los interiores de nuestras casas son importantes no solo para nosotros, forman parte de un negocio, de un estilo de vida que es la base de la decoración, del interiorismo, de ese afán de acomodarnos en nuestro propio espacio pero no a nuestro gusto, sino a un gusto elegante socialmente estimable.

Hay publicaciones, estilos, y ahí las modas, el anticuariado y el diseño nos hablan de comodidad, aprovechamiento del espacio, de las tendencias y de los gustos.

Hasta series de plataformas digitales nos explican cómo vivir en nuestras casas, cómo ordenar nuestros armarios… Pero realmente un interior está decorado por la vida que haya trascurrido en él, por el uso que le dé quien habita ese espacio, su luz y sus sombras. La vida, una vez más, con su conjunto de experiencias, memorias, sentido que damos a los lugares, con todo lo que vivimos y soñamos en esos lugares, es lo que realmente hace que unos rincones parezcan más agradables, más cálidos, más atractivos que otros. De la frialdad cargada de belleza de la vivienda de Luis Barragán hasta el desastre cotidiano de los dormitorios de los jóvenes; desde el lujo de la clase alta británica hasta la supervivencia con nostalgia de las chabolas de los emigrantes. Cada interior tiene el ADN de quien vive en él.

La fotografía no tiene un nombre para todas esas miles, millones de imágenes que captan los interiores de las sociedades e individuos actuales. Si para la fotografía callejera tenemos el término Street Photography no hay nada parecido para toda esa ingente producción que significa el halo intimista de la fotografía, esas imágenes de dormitorios, de sofás, de luces tenues que llenan páginas en la historia de la fotografía e incluso en nuestras memorias particulares, en nuestros álbumes. No solo de viajes y exteriores vive la fotografía, se alimenta también de la intimidad, de lo que sucede de puertas adentro, incluso de lo que no sucede, porque en los interiores no se busca ni la acción ni el movimiento.

Se busca a veces la quietud, el descanso, los claroscuros, las sombras, descubrir facetas ocultas de nuestra personalidad, recalcar la vida cotidiana, a veces lo íntimo y a veces lo banal. Pero lo interior a veces es simplemente un reflejo del exterior, un lugar desde donde ver lo que está fuera, a veces una imagen compartida entre el aquí y el allí. Dentro y fuera en un solo plano, de una sola mirada, en una sola imagen.

Marwan Bassiouni nace en 1985 en Morge, en los Alpes suizos, de origen egipcio, trabajaba de camarero y tenía 23 años cuando decidió dejarlo todo y dedicarse a la fotografía. Su serie de imágenes New Dutch Views resume la idea de la relación entre los interiores y los exteriores. Desde un interior y a través de una ventana

nos ofrece diferentes perspectivas del paisaje holandés, de su arquitectura, son miradas al exterior. Pero estas miradas se hacen desde unos interiores que responden a la cultura y a la estética del Islam. Desde la memoria, el origen y una cultura se mira al exterior, a otra cultura ayer lejana que hoy es su paisaje de cada día.

Desde una mirada que puede ser de un emigrante que ve el país de acogida, este/oeste, sur-norte. Nada mejor para expresar esa forma de mirar que el Occidente visto desde el Islam, dos lugares en conflicto, uno que vive hacia afuera, abiertamente, y otro introvertido, oculto, misterioso. Las imágenes de Bassiouni no necesitan palabras, solo hay que saber que las imágenes son vistas reales de lo que podemos ver a través de las ventanas de diversas mezquitas en Holanda. Vemos lo que los creyentes islámicos ven de las ciudades donde viven desde los lugares donde rezan. No hay truco ninguno, como siempre la realidad es más surrealista, parece más falsa que la simple mentira. Inspirado por la ética islámica y la filosofía estética no occidental, Marwan considera que su práctica es una forma de “fotografía documental abstracta” que se centra en las cualidades contemplativas y humanísticas de la imagen fotográfica.

Javier Campano (Madrid, 1950) tiene otra mirada muy diferente del exterior desde sus interiores. En sus fotografías la superficie se comparte entre ese paisaje exterior, Madrid, y unos interiores silenciosos, ciudadanos, ventanas iluminadas por lámparas de sobremesa que dan a las calles, las arterias de una ciudad que él conoce palmo a palmo. Autodidacta y claro seguidor de Robert Frank y André Kertesz, la superposición de imágenes en sus fotografías, entrelazando la luz exterior con la sombra interior, es una constante. Una mesa con apenas un cenicero y el humo de un cigarro y en el exterior el perfil de los edificios, el sol o la noche de Madrid, o de cualquier otra ciudad, habitaciones de hotel pasajeras o de su casa, su torre de observación, mezclan momentos de intimidad con esa mirada de halcón que sobrevuela toda su obra. Si a Campano le preguntáramos “¿qué porción de sol entra en tu habitación?” la respuesta seria simple: toda la luz, toda la vida, todo cabe en un fragmento de interior con una ventana entornada.

Architecture is not only constructed landscape full of inexplicably large volumes, signed by illustrious names. Architecture is also and perhaps above all, a work of art, like a painting or a photograph in which we live. The only habitable work of art, the construction of art by definition. However, reality tells us every day that this is not the case. Poor construction, economic scarcity, bad architects … Unfortunately experience tells us that art today is not what it was. But our house continues to be our castle, our refuge. It is within its corners where we feel happy and safe, where we can really be ourselves. It is in these rooms where Louis Khan establishes the beginnings of architecture, between these four simple walls, in this primordial theatre of our lives, where the seed of a building can be found. Although all the homes in a building are the same, once each of its rooms have been inhabited, each space, each corner is different, like a portrait of its inhabitants. The best architects know that everything is architecture although not all architecture is habitable. Similarly not all building interiors are homes. Churches, hospitals, bars … are just three examples of interiors parallel to the home, places where we also shelter, where we express who we are, to a greater or lesser degree.

In the history of art, building interiors took a long time to have an independent life from the figures occupying them. For a long time it is the figures, be

them saints, virgins or patrons, apostles or kings who are the protagonists of the works; the interior is a simple background, a scene where the action takes place, where the main character is located. But then a time comes when the customs change and with the success of cities and emergence of the middle classes, architecture reaches the world of painting and the buildings start to become something essential; bit by bit, the inside of houses, homes, are the place where celebrations and rituals take place, where families meet up, where one reads, eats and sleeps and looks out of the window. Because windows are an essential part of a home’s interior. The connection between the inside and outside always takes place around a window or a door. In the same way that for greater intimacy the presence of curtains, a sofa, an armchair, a bed are vital…When the North American poet Wallace Stevens asked “How much sun gets into your bedroom?” he was referring to how much of the outside world reaches your internal world.

For some time now, the inside of our homes is not just important to us but has become a business, a life style that is the basis of decoration, interior design and this desire to arrange our space, not necessarily to our own taste, but in line with a socially accepted understanding of style. There are publications, each setting style trends; the worlds of antiques and design tell us about comfort, space maximisation, trends and

styles. Even various digital platforms explain to us how to live in our houses, how to organise our wardrobes …

But an interior is really decorated by the life lived there, the use given to it by its inhabitants, its light, its shadows. It is life, once again, with its experiences, memories, meanings we give to places, things we have lived and dreamed there, that really make a corner look nicer, warmer, cosier and more attractive than another.

From the cold beauty of Luis Barragan´s home, to the everyday chaos of an adolescent’s room; from British upper class luxuries to the nostalgic survival of an immigrant´s shack. Each interior wears the DNA of the person who lives there.

Photography does not have a name for all these thousands, millions of images that capture the interiors of today’s societies and people. Whilst the photographing of street scenes is given the title of Street Photography there is no such term assigned to the huge production of this more intimate photography, the images of bedrooms, sofas and soft lights that fill pages in the history of photography and even our own memories and photo albums. Photography does not just live off travel and the outdoors, but also the privacy of the indoors, even what does not happen because one tends not to seek action or movement indoors.

Sometimes one seeks peace, quiet and rest, the chiaroscuro, the shadows, to discover hidden sides of our character, to emphasize everyday life; sometimes intimacy, sometimes banality. But the interior is sometimes simply a reflection of the exterior, a place to view the outside from, sometimes an image shared between the here and there; the inside and outside of one scene, from a single viewpoint, in a single image.

Marwan Bassiouni, of Egyptian descent, was born in 1985 in Morge, the Swiss Alps. He was 23 years old and working as a waiter when he decided to give it all up and dedicate himself to photography. His series of images, New Dutch Views capture the idea of the relationship between the interior and exterior. From the inside looking out, he shows us Dutch landscapes and architecture from different perspectives as seen

through a window. But these gazes come from an interior that belongs to Islamic culture and aesthetic.

One looks to the outside world with their memories, heritage and culture, they look to another culture, a culture that was distant yesterday but forms part of their everyday landscape today. One looks out from the view point of an immigrant looking at their host country, from East to West, South to North. There is no better way to express this way of looking than the West viewed from the perspective of Islam, two places in conflict, one that lives outwards and openly, and another more introverted, hidden and mysterious.

Bassiouni’s images do not need words, we only need to know that the images are real views taken from various mosques in Holland. We see what Muslims see of the city where they live from the places where they pray. There is no trick, as always reality seems stranger than fiction. Inspired by Islamic ethics and a nonwestern aesthetic, Marwan considers his approach a form of “abstract documentary photography” focused on the contemplative and humanistic qualities of the photographic image.

Javier Campano (Madrid, 1950) has a very different way of looking out at the world from the inside. In his photographs, the external Madrid landscape is shared with silent interiors, windows illuminated by table lamps looking out onto the streets; the arteries of the city he knows like the back of his hand. Self taught and obvious follower of Robert Frank and André Kertesz, the superimposition of images, weaving light from outside with the shadows inside, is a theme throughout his photographs. A table with just an ashtray and the smoke of a burning cigarette and on the outside the profile of buildings, day or night in Madrid or any other city, rooms in passing hotels or in his house, his observation tower mixes moments of intimacy with the falcon gaze that hovers over all of his works. If we were to ask Campano “How much light enters your room?” the answer would simply be: all the light, all the life, everything fits into a fragment of the interior when a window is left slightly ajar.

Entrevista con Thomas Ruff por Rosa Olivares

“No se puede fotografiar el futuro”

Al margen de aquellos fotógrafos que simplemente nos gustan, existen otros que definen una época. Hay otros que se convierten en maestros de las generaciones posteriores. Los hay que con su obra desarrollan una actitud social, tal vez urbana, o aquellos que se guían por una línea invisible que les dicta la naturaleza, una cierta sensibilidad poética. La realidad nunca es tan importante, pues al fin de todo el fotógrafo no reproduce la realidad sino aquello que su mirada define como realidad. Es mucho más un trabajo subjetivo, un trabajo que marca un mundo interior que paulatinamente se abre a través de sus imágenes, de sus creaciones.

Thomas Ruff es uno de los artistas que han marcado toda una época y un lugar con su trabajo. Ha realizado series muy distintas en apariencia pero que mantienen un hilo de continuidad que no es solamente la mirada de su autor. Pero Ruff es, también, un artista con muchos matices, que abarca con su mirada un conjunto de intereses tan amplios como la propia vida. Alumno de Bern Becher, Thomas Ruff se diferencia de todos los discípulos de la Kunst Academie por la imposibilidad de estarse quieto, de quedarse en una sola forma de hacer. Él lo deja claro en sus breves palabras de esta entrevista: “empecé mirando mi entorno, mi casa, las casas de mi familia, los rostros de mis amigos, las calles de mi ciudad…” para seguir mirando los periódicos, internet, las estrellas… En general todo lo que hoy miramos

todos. Pero él los ha atrapado en el tiempo, sin valorar exageradamente la idea de autor, valiéndose de imágenes todas en observatorios espaciales, en la NASA, simplemente interviniendo en esa mirada colectiva que él individualiza y convierte en una imagen para la historia, en un pedazo de historia del arte, y de la fotografía.

Inquieto en su mirada, pero tranquilo en su método, siempre ha investigado su entorno con las herramientas que ha creído necesario, y nada en su trabajo es simplemente casual. Desde los formatos, los contenidos de cada serie, todo tiene un sentido que se puede encontrar si se sabe mirar.

La primera serie que realiza es un formato pequeño y un tema aparentemente íntimo, tranquilo. Los Interieurs. Fragmentos del interior de las casas de sus padres, de sus tíos, de su familia. Pedazos que definen un ambiente, una forma de vivir, un gusto estético, que nos hablan de la vida privada de una sociedad, de una generación, pero también del gusto, de las costumbres. Esos rincones, esa decoración nos enmarca una vida familiar, asentada en el paso del tiempo, con un mobiliario de años anteriores, años 60, y también de una vida silenciosa, comedida. De todo lo que un rincón de nuestra casa dice de cada uno de nosotros. Estas imágenes son, tal vez, lo más íntimo que vamos a llegar en la vida de una familia alemana, lo más cerca que se puede llegar al corazón de una época.

En tu trabajo Interieurs, una breve serie de fotografías realizadas en 1979, muestras rincones, fragmentos de las casas de sus amigos y familiares; salas, habitaciones con objetos de adorno y mobiliarios, baños, salas, dormitorios. Allí donde la vida cotidiana se realiza. Esta serie marca un inicio sutil y una cierta tristeza poética.

Casi cuarenta años después de su realización, ¿qué te sugieren estas obras y qué querías mostrar con ellas?

En ese momento, mientras era estudiante de Bernd Becher, realmente creía que la fotografía podía captar la realidad. Así que no intervine nada, solo fotografié las habitaciones como estaban. No usé luz artificial, sino solo la que entraba por las ventanas. Eran las habitaciones de mis padres, tíos y tías, etc. Una especie de documentación del entorno, donde mi generación creció.

Las últimas fotos tuyas que he visto se llaman Mars, y son las antípodas del primer trabajo tuyo que vi (Interieurs). Esta obra, basada en imágenes de la NASA tratadas con nuevas tecnologías, se aleja totalmente de aquellas pequeñas imágenes de interiores caseros, rincones privados, lugares dentro de una casa cualquiera.

Es cierto que ya hace tiempo en Cosmogonías mirabas hacia el exterior. Desde el espacio interior al espacio exterior, el más exterior al que hemos llegado por el momento. ¿Exactamente qué ha pasado entre unas y otras imágenes? ¿Se puede establecer algún vínculo, alguna conexión, entre unas imágenes y otras?

En los últimos cuarenta años miré en diferentes direcciones. Primero, eché un vistazo a las casas de mis parientes (Interiores), luego eché un vistazo a la ciudad (Häuser), luego miré la cara de mis amigos (Retrato) y seguí mirando el periódico (Zeitungsfoto). Luego miré hacia el cielo (estrellas) y así sucesivamente. Yo diría que siempre es una mirada muy simple a las cosas y situaciones, el reflejo de cómo tomamos fotografías y cómo percibimos el mundo a través de estas imágenes.

Desde Interieurs has realizado retratos, paisajes, nocturnos, arquitectura, máquinas ya obsoletas y has in-

dagado en Internet, en la pornografía on line; has profundizado en las nuevas tecnologías aplicadas a la imagen, a veces rompiendo los límites que definen la fotografía. ¿Podríamos decir que tu interés se aleja de la vida de la gente que le rodea, algo que siempre ha estado muy presente en su trabajo?

No hay un alejamiento de la vida de las personas, estoy trabajando en las imágenes que las personas ven.

La fotografía europea se ha vuelto cada vez, poco a poco, más fría, más aséptica, más alejada de las personas. ¿Se está perdiendo el interés por la vida privada, por esa faceta oculta del individuo social o, al contrario, es una forma de respeto por la privacidad?

Hay fotógrafos que toman fotografías de personas, hay fotógrafos que hacen naturalezas muertas, fotógrafos que hacen arquitectura, etc. No creo que la fotografía europea se haya vuelto más fría; los fotógrafos siguen retratando el mundo entero…

En todas tus series siempre ha estado presente una cierta idea de historia, de documentación de la pertenencia a una época, a un tiempo concreto. Desde la decoración de las casas y la forma de vivir de las personas de su serie Interieurs, los “portraits”, el porno, la arquitectura, las máquinas, en todas se podía ver un tiempo concreto… ¿cómo se puede ver esta idea en tus imágenes de Mars o de Cosmogonías?

Al hacer una foto hay un tiempo específico que se congela. No puedes fotografiar el futuro.

Tu trabajo siempre se basa en una investigación formal, a veces tecnológica. ¿Cuáles son los avances tecnológicos que más te interesan en la actualidad?

Interview with Thomas Ruff

“You cannot photograph the future”

There are photographers who we like and there are others who define an age, who become the teachers of future generations. There are those who, through their work, develop a social perhaps urban attitude, and others who are guided by an invisible line dictated by nature; a certain poetic sensibility. Reality is never that important because in the end the photographer does not depict reality but that defined as real by their gaze.

The work of a photographer is much more subjective, it captures an internal world which gradually opens up through its images, through its creations.

Thomas Ruff is one of those artists whose work has left its mark on an entire period and place. He has produced series of photographs that differ greatly in appearance but share a common thread beyond the gaze of the artist. But Ruff is also a highly nuanced artist whose outlook encompasses as wide a set of interests as life itself. A student of Bern Becher, Thomas Ruff stands out from the other pupils of the Kunst Academie because of his restless nature, unable to stick with just one way of doing things.

He makes this clear through his brief words in this interview: “I started off looking at my surroundings, my house, my relatives´ homes, my friends´ faces, the streets of my city … ” and continued looking at the newspapers, the internet, the stars … in general everything that everyone looks at these days. But

he has captured them in time, without exaggerating the role of the artist, making use of images in space observatories, in NASA, simply intervening in the collective gaze making it individualized and turning them into images for posterity, a piece for the history of art and photography.

Restless in his gaze but settled in his method, he has always investigated his surroundings using the tools he thought necessary, nothing in his work is coincidental; from the format, the contents of each series, everything has a meaning that can be discovered if you know how to look.

His first series was produced in small format and on an apparently quiet and intimate theme, Interieurs.

This showed fragments of house interiors, those belonging to his parents, his uncle and aunts, his family; pieces that define an environment, a way of living, aesthetic preference, revealing something about the private life of a society and of a generation but also telling us about tastes and habits. Those corners, that decoration, is a presentation of family life, set in time with furniture from years gone by, the 60s and a quiet restrained life. Everything a corner of our house says about each one of us. These images are perhaps the most intimate view we are going to get of German family life, the closest we are going to get to the heart of an age.

In your work Interieurs, a brief series of photographs taken in 1979, you show corners, fragments of houses belonging to friends and family; rooms with decorative objects and furnishings, bathrooms, bedrooms.

Spaces where daily life unfolds. This series contains a certain poetic sadness. Almost forty years on , what would you say about this work? What would you want to reflect on?

At that time, while I was still a student of Bernd Becher, I really believed that photography could capture reality.

So I did not arrange anything, I just photographed the rooms, as they were. I did not use artificial light, but only the light that came through the windows. They were the rooms of my parents, uncles and aunts, etc.

It was a kind of documentation of the surroundings my generation grew up in.

The last photos of yours that I have seen are called Mars, and are the antithesis of the first work that I saw (Interieurs). This work, based on NASA images, treated with new technologies, are totally different from those small images of homemade interiors, private corners, places inside any house. Some time ago in your Cosmogonias series you had already started looking outwards. We could say that there is an evolution from interior to exterior space, the most exterior being your current work. Exactly what happened between the two series? Are there any connections between both sets of images?

In the last 40 years, I just looked in different directions.

First, I had a look at the houses of my relatives (Interieurs), then I had a look at the city (Häuser), then I looked into the faces of my friends (Portrait) and I continued looking into the newspaper (Zeitungsfoto) then I looked up to the sky (Stars) and so on. I would say it is always a very simple way of looking at things and situations and the reflection of how we take photographs and how we perceive the world through these images.

Since Interieurs you have photographed portraits, night landscapes, architecture, obsolete machines. You have also researched the Internet and online pornography.

You have gone deeper into new technologies applied to image, sometimes breaking the boundaries that define photography. Is it true to say that your interest has moved

away from the life of people around you; something that has always been very present in your work?

There is no move away from the lives of people, I am working on the images people look at.

European photography has become increasingly colder, more aseptic, more removed from people. Are we losing interest in private life, in that hidden aspect of individual life, or is it a way of respecting privacy?

There are photographers who take photographs of people, there are photographers who do still life, there are photographers who do architecture, etc. I do not think that European photography has become colder, all photographers together are still capturing the whole world …

In all your series a certain idea of history has been present. From the decoration of the houses and the way of life of the people in your series Interieurs, the “portraits”, porn, architecture and machines; in all of them we could see a specific time ... How do you see this idea in your images of Mars or Cosmogonies?

As soon as you take a photograph, this specific time is frozen. You cannot photograph the future.

Your work has always been based on formal research, sometimes even technological. What are the technological advances that most interest you today?

I am looking for a camera that records, but that does not fix the image. I am looking for a camera that records the whole scene, but not from a specific angle.

I am looking for a camera, where I can interact … with the scene …

Las ferias del libro suelen ser sobre todo eso, ferias. Es decir: una celebración, una excusa para que las familias echen el fin de semana y los feriantes saquen unas monedas. Un requisito de las ferias es su banalidad: ningún escritor debería ir a una feria con ánimo de salvar el mundo. Ni tan siquiera la literatura, ni mucho menos a sí mismo. En una feria se salva la tarde, todo lo más. Por eso, cuando viajo a una me gusta ir con las manos en los bolsillos y la ocurrencia en la boca, más entertainer que intelectual.

La de Lima es una feria grande, como todo en esa ciudad, y cuando me invitaron a ella participé en un proyecto artístico que me gustó mucho llamado Maletas viajeras. Un grupo de escritores españoles y peruanos escogimos cinco objetos que nos explicaban. La disposición museográfica incluía unas vitrinas en forma de maletas abiertas con los objetos dispuestos en exposición y un vídeo donde nosotros mismos explicábamos la selección y su sentido. Para presentarlo, montaron una mesa redonda con algunos de los participantes.

Aunque mi selección era trágica (una foto de mi hijo muerto, un analgésico que me recuerda mi dolor crónico, un libro que me conecta con la intimidad de mi madre, etcétera), entendí que la feria estaba para bromear, así que procuré ser lo más banal posible, eludiendo el discurso sobre la muerte en cuya trampa me había metido yo solo. Creo que lo conseguí razonablemente y me recliné en la silla dispuesto a escuchar al

siguiente invitado de la mesa, José Carlos Agüero, un poeta flaquísimo, moreno y desgreñado que no tenía sitio en su cuerpo para un solo gramo de banalidad.

Agüero dijo que le costó elegir cinco objetos porque había sido criado en una casa comunista. Sus padres fueron dos militantes de Sendero Luminoso sin el menor apego por la propiedad privada. Tenía, dijo, muy pocas cosas. A partir de ahí, ligó su selección autobiográfica con la historia más dolorosa y trágica de Perú. Sobre la mesa desfilaron millones de fantasmas, víctimas de la guerra que reclamaban su derecho a acaparar todo el aire del salón.

Si me hubiera tocado intervenir después de él, habría declinado hablar. Tras sus palabras sólo cabían el aplauso y el silencio.

Pensé mucho en José Carlos Agüero y en su relación con los objetos y las casas. Hablaba de una infancia clandestina y ambulante, de viviendas que eran más refugios que hogares. La incomodidad se imponía como un ideal de vida.

Mis padres no fueron terroristas ni he conocido los rigores de militancia alguna, pero de alguna forma que me resultaba inexplicable entendía y compartía ese desapego por las cosas y los espacios. Agüero es un asceta.

Yo soy todo lo contrario: me cuesta mucho desprenderme del objeto más ridículo y convierto en desvanes las habitaciones que habito. Me gusta estar en casa y me gusta estar cómodo en casa. A fuerza de viajar y de

salir, la intemperie se me ha vuelto insípida y no hay placer que supere al de amodorrarme a oscuras en el sofá una noche cualquiera.

Sin embargo, nunca le he dado importancia a la casa. A pesar de ser hogareño y de acumular objetos sin medida, hasta convertir todo el espacio habitable en un almacén sin catalogar, la casa es más un cuartel general que un semillero espiritual. Aunque esté cargada de vida y de muerte, aunque no quepan más fantasmas en las habitaciones, mi relación con ella era utilitaria. Se puede vivir en cualquier parte, pensaba. La vida entera es un campamento que se puede montar en cualquier parte. En esa paradoja que nunca había explorado era donde me sentía cercano al desapego de Agüero por la propiedad privada.

Poco después de mi viaje a Lima (apenas unas semanas, de hecho), cambió para siempre esta relación.

Compramos una casa grande a quinientos metros de la antigua —por no apartarnos del colegio-, en un bulevar animado y céntrico lleno de bares y comercios. Es un piso de techos altos y artesonados y molduras, una casa burguesa construida justo después de la guerra que había conocido muchos vecinos y muchas reformas. Las ventanas dan al bulevar, integrando el dentro en el afuera, no dejando que olvidemos nunca que estamos en el corazón latiente de la ciudad y que formamos parte de ella. Supongo que, en su concepción, esto era una demostración de poder: la burguesía que habitaba aquí en el franquismo necesitaba sentir que poseía la calle, y certificaban su dominio con la vista desde el mirador. Nosotros nos sentimos parte de una corriente y de un tumulto que se filtra un poco —apenas nada— por los muros gruesos y el doble cristal.

Desde la primera noche que dormí en ella, sentí que ya no tenía sentido todo lo que había escrito sobre los interiores, que todas mis especulaciones y teorías literarias eran fruto de un desapego que ya no podía sentir más. Estaba en casa. En mi casa. Por primera vez, con todas las consecuencias.

Entendí aquella noche, de golpe, por qué las biografías de los escritores dedican tantas páginas a sus domicilios y sus mudanzas. Siempre me habían parecido un tanto frívolas. ¿Qué más daba si vivían en casas bonitas o feas, en la ciudad o en el campo, con vistas o sin ellas? Hasta el propio Thomas Bernhardt, el antipoeta de las ciudades bellas, el que escribió contra la armonía y la coquetería urbana, se obsesionó con una choza campestre allá en lo alto de las montañas de Austria.

La vida de muchos escritores es la historia de sus casas. Algunos, como Hemingway, parecen el catálogo de una inmobiliaria. Otros, la metáfora de un mundo que se extingue, como entiende quien recorre las casas de Machado en Sevilla, Soria, Baeza, Segovia y Valencia, hasta la morada final, el hostal de Collioure.

De joven leía con impaciencia e irritación las descripciones de las cocinas y los balcones, las piscinas y los jardines, los despachos y las bibliotecas. De joven, claro, me daba igual vivir en un banco del parque.

También contemplaba extrañado cómo, al salir de la universidad, muchos amigos abrían una cuenta ahorrovivienda y cómo se apresuraban a firmar una hipoteca en cuanto conseguían un trabajo.

La casa en la que vivíamos hasta ahora era la que compró mi pareja antes de conocerme y nunca sentí la necesidad de empezar de cero en otro sitio. Quizá porque tuve una educación sentimental un poco anacrónica (Dylan, beatniks y alrededores), concebía la vida como una improvisación, no como la ejecución de unos planes.

En la casa pequeña, donde nacieron nuestros hijos, yo no tenía despacho. Una esquina del salón me hacía las veces. Allí escribí unos cuantos libros, en el centro de la casa, entre baberos, pañales, juguetes y gritos, junto a una ventana que daba a una calle secundaria, sin apenas tráfico y muy arbolada. Fui muy feliz así.

Nunca he necesitado silencios de monasterio, me concentro mucho y escribo en cualquier parte, y esta situación desordenada y ruidosa armonizaba con mi poética: si defendía una literatura en primera persona que confunde el autor con el narrador y donde lo íntimo es social y lo social sólo importa cuando es íntimo, sentarme a escribir en el salón y mezclar mi trabajo intelectual con el trasiego en la cocina era lo más coherente.

En mi literatura, el interior formaba parte del exterior, como lo profesional era también personal. Las fronteras convencionales entre lo público y lo privado y entre el oficio y lo íntimo se diluían. Era la mía una rebelión sin víctimas ni ofensas, pero con resultados radicales: sentado en el centro de la casa, dinamitaba los espacios y los roles. Estaba dentro y a la vez fuera: en el salón y en el ágora, porque mi salón era un ágora.

En una sociedad donde todo está compartimentado y se vende ropa para cada ocasión, yo era el mismo siempre, una constante indistinguible: amante, padre, escritor. Imposible saber dónde empezaba uno y dónde terminaba el otro, como era imposible disociar el Sergio

del Molino que narraba mis libros del Sergio del Molino con DNI que hacía la compra.

Con esa convicción nos instalamos en el nuevo piso, y haciéndolo nuestro, colocando las lámparas, eligiendo las paredes que íbamos a forrar de estanterías para meter la biblioteca y asomándonos por la ventana en silencio y en la oscuridad de la madrugada, mientras los noctívagos y los taxis con luces verdes marchan en cualquier dirección, entendí al fin por qué se da tanta importancia a las casas de los escritores en sus biografías. Al entenderlo, temblé de miedo: ¿y si no volvía a escribir un libro? Toda mi obra se había creado en el desorden y en el ruido, me había abierto paso a machetazos de las circunstancias para levantarla palabra por palabra.

Incluso me había burlado de la teoría de la habitación propia. Qué idiotez, querida Virginia Woolf: el escritor (la escritora, qué más da) no necesita autonomía, no precisa fingir que no pertenece a un mundo y a una familia ruidosa. El mundo y su incomodidad forman parte de lo que escribe. Un interior que no remita a un exterior no fermenta, sino que esteriliza cualquier intento artístico.

Me decía: Heidegger escribía en una cabaña aislada en la Selva Negra. El pobre Walter Benjamin, en cambio, lo hacía donde podía: en cafés, en casas de alquiler de una sola habitación, en pensiones, en el suelo de una vivienda de campesinos de Ibiza. Benjamin escribía en interiores que eran exteriores. Heidegger, en interiores que eran solo interiores, autorreferenciales y absolutistas. ¿Cuál de los dos filósofos ha sobrevivido a la erosión del tiempo? ¿Quién nos interpela y quién nos resulta ilegible? ¿Y si en mi nuevo piso, con un despacho donde encerrarme, sin los gritos de mi hijo, sin sus urgentísimas necesidades, sin el centrifugar de la lavadora a dos metros de mi mesa, me convertía en Heidegger? Tal vez, me decía, la razón por la que algunos de mis libros hayan conectado con su público sea que llevaban incorporado el aroma de las judías pintas y el bullicio de Bob Esponja en su prosa. Si escribo como siempre he soñado escribir, en un despacho con la puerta cerrada, inmerso en mi propio mundo, sin más distracciones que las que yo me imponga, ¿no produciré libros quietos, asintomáticos, blancos?

Fue un miedo fugaz, pero aún no lo he descartado.

El interior de la casa se confunde con el exterior no sólo en la arquitectura, sino a través del tiempo. Nuestra nueva casa es vieja. Se construyó al terminar la guerra, cuando la ciudad retomó un proyecto de ensanche bur-

gués que había interrumpido en 1936 y que conectaba mediante un bulevar (el mismo al que se asoman las ventanas del salón) el centro con el campus universitario, que también era uno de esos campus de inspiración norteamericana que se proyectaron por influjo de la Junta de Ampliación de Estudios desde la década de 1920. Latidos para un corazón más ancho y oxígeno para alimentarlo. La élite media de la ciudad (sus médicos, sus abogados, sus arquitectos) se mudó allí y allí envejeció. Los que no han muerto, son nonagenarios, y poco a poco, profesionales de treinta y cuarenta años, con niños pequeños, estamos rejuveneciendo la zona.

Por tanto, el salón de mi casa también se conecta con el ágora a través de la historia. Cuando me siento en la butaca y levanto la vista del libro para perderla en las molduras del techo, me integro en la historia de mi polis. Estar sentado, amodorrado, con un libro en las manos, se convierte en un acto político: si un pintor me hiciera un retrato entonces, los historiadores del arte entenderían el cuadro como el triunfo de la democracia. Por supuesto que se puede leer también como un simple aburguesamiento, un capítulo más de un desclasamiento, pero la escena tiene mucho más contenido social que intimista, porque los desclasamientos en mi generación no corresponden a interiores como ese.

Los nacidos en la década de 1970 hemos vaciado esos interiores, en vez de llenarlos. Nos fuimos (y tienen que disculparme el nosotros generacional, nada mayestático, de este párrafo) de esos ensanches a los bloques de las afueras, a las urbanizaciones o, en el caso de los bobos (bohème bourgeais), en antiguos barrios populares del centro que destruimos con Starbucks y especulaciones inmobiliarias. Los ensanches burgueses, con sus casas desproporcionadas y su cadencia de mecedora, se fueron perdiendo sin que les prestásemos la menor atención ni derramásemos una lágrima por ellos.

Era una herencia que a nadie le apetecía reclamar.

Quienes ocupamos ahora esos salones los resignificamos. Hay algo de asalto bolchevique en nuestra forma de decorarlos. En contraste con el tono casi artdèco de las molduras, y aprovechando los techos altos, compramos una lámpara enorme y negra de diseño industrial que contrasta hasta el insulto con las arañas de cristal o los plafones tristes que debieron colgar allí en la década de 1940. Presidiendo una de las paredes, dialogando con la lámpara, hemos puesto una litografía de edición muy corta y numerada de un paisaje urbano de Pepe Cerdá. Es un atardecer muy avanzado en un

puente de las afueras sobre el río Ebro, adivinándose un arrabal industrial. Cerdá domina las luces de la anochecida y, tirando de escuela goyesca, convierte sus paisajes sin personajes en formas abstractas, apenas fogonazos de luz. Su pintura es una ventana a la ciudad de la que vengo, otra incursión del exterior en el interior.

Es, también, una ventana a mi literatura, que siempre escarba en los márgenes, en el limes de la ciudad y de los países.

Cerdá, con otro nombre, fue personaje de una novela mía de la que no quiero acordarme.

Frente al concepto monacal de la casa como retiro, la mía me coloca en el centro del mundo. A pesar de que mi pareja me acusa a menudo de vivir en una burbuja intelectual, porque apenas me relaciono con personas de fuera de mi mundo artístico y periodístico, me siento profundamente contaminado de mi aquí y de mi ahora.

Ni el despacho, ni el salón, ni la cocina me abstraen de la contemporaneidad. Al contrario: me arrastran a ella.

Nunca dejo de sentir que el interior viaja en el exterior, por el espacio y por el tiempo. Todo el barrio, el bulevar, la heladería, los taxis, las fruterías, los bares de tapas y las terrazas de la plaza están integradas en el salón. Mi casa abarca mucho más que sus paredes y se extiende, si no por la ciudad entera, al menos por mi barrio.

Sigo comprendiendo, a mi manera, el desapego del poeta Agüero por la propiedad y los objetos. Lo entiendo desde la paradoja y la hipocresía, desde mi casa llena de objetos, desde esta ingenuidad burguesa que tan insultante y banal puede resultarle a algunos. Lo entiendo porque comparto con él una noción básica: lo íntimo es social, no existimos fuera de la polis y no hay soledad posible si no es en medio de la multitud.

En los últimos años me he interesado mucho por la literatura y las cuestiones judías. No me ha poseído ningún arrebato místico ni sueño con emigrar a un kibutz, pero siento una afinidad poderosa con la cultura hebraica y creo que se debe a que, a diferencia del resto de las grandes religiones, es más privada que pública.

plos, como bien sabe todo el mundo, fueron destruidos dos veces en Jerusalén). Al contrario que sucede con el cristianismo y con el Islam, la fe judía no se expresa en grandes manifestaciones públicas relacionadas con el poder político, sino en ceremonias sencillas que tienen por escenario el salón de la casa. Es una religión doméstica, de rituales familiares.

No fue así en tiempos bíblicos, claro, y Jesucristo fue un reformista que luchaba contra el boato institucionalizado de la élite sacerdotal, pero se impuso una visión no proselitista centrada en la casa, porque los judíos creen que hay que honrar al innombrable llevándole a todos los aspectos de la vida cotidiana. La Torá (y los comentarios del Talmud) no son más que consejos de cocina, limpieza y modales. Si se obvia lo prolijos, ridículos y demenciales que son y se atiende a su espíritu, se puede sentir una enorme simpatía por una religión que quería organizar la sociedad a partir de los interiores hogareños, en lugar de encuadrando a la gente con uniforme en las plazas. Para los que preferimos pasar la vida leyendo en una butaca antes que fundirnos con la masa en un estadio, el judaísmo es nuestro ideal estético. No es extraño que su némesis, el nazismo, fuera un movimiento que idolatraba las masas y los espacios abiertos.

No me identifico con el judío errante, sino con el estático, el que limpia la menorá con un plumero y el que deja una silla libre para el profeta Isaías en la cena de Pesaj. Detesto el gregarismo, me angustio en los lugares bulliciosos, pero mi solipsismo hogareño no es huraño ni eremita. Como los judíos, he metido a dios en casa, pero como soy ateo, lo que he metido en el interior es el mundo entero.

The static Jew Sergio del Molino

Book fairs are usually just that, book fairs. In other words: a celebration, an excuse for families to take the weekend off and for the exhibitors to make some money. Banality is a requisite for attending these fairs: writers shouldn’t go to these events hoping to save the world. Not even literature can be saved, let alone oneself. In a book fair, the only thing that is saved is the afternoon. That is why, I travel with money and amusing remarks at hand, more as an entertainer than an intellectual.

The Lima International Book Fair is a big one, like everything in Lima, and so when I was invited, I participated in an artistic project I liked very much called Maletas Viajeras (Travelling Suitcases). A group of Spanish and Peruvian writers, myself included, chose 5 objects that represented us. The open suitcases displayed the selected objects and a video where we explained their significance. To present it, we had a round-table discussion with some of the participants.

Although my selection was tragic (a picture of my dead son, an analgesic that reminds me of my chronic pain, a book that connects me with my mother, etc.), I was aware that the fair was for pleasantry, so I tried to be as banal as possible, avoiding the death discourse I trapped myself into. Thinking I was somewhat successful I leaned back in my chair ready to listen

to the next guest at the table, José Carlos Agüero, a skinny and dishevelled poet who had no place in his body for a single gram of banality.

Agüero said he had a hard time choosing the five objects because he was raised in a communist home. His parents were Shining Path militants without the slightest attachment to private property. He said he had very few things. From there, he linked his autobiographical selection with Peru’s most painful and tragic history. Millions of ghosts paraded on the table, war victims who claimed their right to monopolise all the air in the room.

If I would have had to speak after him, I would have declined to participate. His words were followed by applause and silence.

I thought a lot about José Carlos Agüero and his relationship with objects and houses. He spoke of a clandestine and itinerant childhood, of houses that were more shelters than homes. Discomfort was imposed as a life ideal.

My parents were not terrorists, nor have I ever known the rigours of any militancy but in some inexplicable way, I understood and shared that detachment from things and places. Agüero is an ascetic. I am the opposite: I find it hard to get rid of the most ridiculous object and turn the rooms I live in into attics. I like to be at home and I like to be comfortable at

home. By dint of traveling and going out, being outside has become insipid and there is no greater pleasure than nodding off on the couch on any given night.

However, the house in itself was never important to me. In spite of being homely and of unmeasurably accumulating objects until converting every habitable space into an uncatalogued warehouse, the house was more of a general headquarters than a spiritual nursery. Even if it was full of life and death, even if no more ghosts could fit in the rooms, my relationship with it was still utilitarian. You can live anywhere, I used to think. Life is a camp you can set up anywhere. It was in that unexplored paradox where I related to Agüero’s detachment from private property.

Shortly after my trip to Lima (just a few weeks, in fact), this relationship changed forever. We bought a big house five hundred meters from the old one — to be close to the school — in a lively and central boulevard full of bars and shops. It is a bourgeois house with high, coffered ceilings and mouldings, built just after the war. It has endured many renovations and neighbours. The windows overlook the boulevard, integrating the inside with the outside, not letting us forget that we are in the beating heart of the city and that we are part of it. I suppose it was conceived as a demonstration of power: the bourgeoisie that lived here during the Franco regime needed to feel that they owned the street, and they certified their dominance with the view from the bay window. We feel part of the energy and the commotion that faintly filters through the thick walls and the double glass.

From the very first night I slept in it, I felt that everything I had previously written about interiors no longer made sense, that all my speculations and literary theories were the result of a detachment I could no longer feel. I was home. In my house. For the very first time, with all the consequences that entailed.

That night I suddenly understood why writers’ biographies dedicate so many pages to their homes and change of residencies. They had always seemed a little frivolous to me. What difference did it make if they lived in a beautiful or an ugly house, in the city or in the countryside, with or without views? Even Thomas Bernhardt, the anti-poet of beautiful cities, who wrote against harmony and urban coquetry, became obsessed with a country house in the high mountains of Austria. The life of many writers is the history of their homes. Some, like Hemingway, look like a real

estate company’s catalogue. Others, are a metaphor of an extinguishing world, as can be seen in the houses of Machado in Seville, Soria, Baeza, Segovia and Valencia, and in his final resting place, a hotel in Collioure.

As a young man, I used to read — with impatience and irritation — the descriptions of kitchens and balconies, pools and gardens, offices and libraries.

As a young man, of course, I did not care if I lived on a park bench. It also puzzled me to see how, after graduating from college, all my friends rushed to open a home savings account and signed a mortgage as soon as they found a job.

The house we were living until now, was bought by my partner before meeting me and I had never felt the need to start from scratch somewhere else. Maybe because I had a somewhat anachronistic sentimental education (Dylan, beatniks and surroundings), I conceived life as an improvisation, not as the execution of a plan.

In the small house where our children were born, I did not have an office. I used a corner of our living room for such purposes. There — in the centre of the house — I wrote a few books, among bibs, diapers, toys and screams, next to a window that faced a small street, with hardly any traffic and a lot of trees. I was very happy like that. I have never needed monastery silences, I concentrate a lot and can write anywhere, and this disorganised and noisy situation harmonised with my poetics: if I defended a first-person narrative that confuses the author with the narrator and where intimacy is social and what is social only matters when it is intimate, the most coherent thing was to sit down and write in the living room mixing my intellectual work with the movement in the kitchen.

In my writing, the inside had always been a part of the outside, my professional and personal lives intertwined. The conventional boundaries between the public and the private and between the work and intimacy were diluted. My rebellion did not have any victims or offences, but it had radical results: sitting in the centre of the house, I shattered spaces and roles. I was inside and at the same time outside: in the living room and in the agora, because my living room was an agora. In a society where everything is compartmentalised, and clothes are sold for every occasion, I was always the same, an indistinguishable constant: lover, father, writer. It was impossible to

know where one began and the other ended, as it was impossible to dissociate the Sergio del Molino who narrated my books from the Sergio del Molino who made the purchase.

With this conviction, we settled into our new home and making it ours — placing the lamps, choosing the walls for the library, and peeking out the window in silence and in the dark of dawn, while the night wanderers and taxi cabs with green lights went in all directions — I finally understood why so much importance is given to the writers’ houses in their biographies. When I understood it, I trembled with fear: what if I never wrote a book again? All my work had been created amid disorder and noise, I overcame hardships to build it word by word. I had even made fun of the theory of having a room of your own to write in. What idiocy, dear Virginia Woolf: the writer does not need autonomy, or pretend that he or she does not belong to a noisy world and family. The world and its discomfort are part of what is written. An interior that does not relate to the exterior sterilises any artistic attempt more than it ferments it.

I told myself: Heidegger wrote in an isolated cabin in the Black Forest. Poor Walter Benjamin, on the other hand, wrote where he could: in cafes, in one-room houses, in pensions, on the floor of a house owned by peasants in Ibiza. Benjamin wrote in interior spaces that where exterior. Heidegger, in interior spaces that were only interior, self-referential and absolutist. Which of the two philosophers has survived the erosion of time? Who can we relate to and who is illegible?

What if in my new apartment, with an office to lock myself in, without my screaming child, without his most urgent needs, without the noise of the washing machine two meters from my table, I became Heidegger? Maybe, I said to myself, my books had connected with their audience because the aroma of black beans and the bustle of SpongeBob were embedded in its prose. If I write as I have always dreamed of writing, in an office with the door closed, immersed in my own world, with no other distractions that what I impose on myself, will I produce quiet, asymptomatic, white books?

It was a fleeting fear, but I have not ruled it out yet.

The interior of the house is confused with the exterior not only in its architecture, but also through the pass of time. Our new house is old. It was built at the end of the war when the city resumed a project

of housing development it had interrupted in 1936 where a boulevard (the same one that can be seen from our living room windows) connected the city centre with the university campus —one of those American-inspired campuses designed by the Board for Advanced Studies since the 1920s. Heartbeats for a wider heart and oxygen to feed it. The city’s elite (doctors, lawyers, architects) moved here and grew old here. Those who have not died, are nonagenarians, and now the area is slowly being rejuvenated by thirty and forty-year old professionals.

Therefore, the living room of my house is connected with the agora through history. When I sit in the chair and look up from my book and my eyes rest on the ceiling mouldings, I blend in the history of my polis. The act of sitting down, drowsy, holding a book in my hands, becomes a political act: if a painter were to make a portrait of me in that precise moment, art historians would understand that painting as the triumph of democracy. Of course, it can also be interpreted as mere gentrification, one more chapter of downward mobility, but the scene’s content is more social than personal, because in my generation, class mobility does not correspond to interiors like this one.

Those of us born in the 1970s emptied these interiors instead of filling them. We left the urban expansion areas and moved to apartment blocks on the outskirts, to the residential areas or, in the case of the bobos (bourgeois-bohème), to old popular districts in the city centre which we destroyed with Starbucks and real estate speculation. The bourgeois neighbourhoods, with their disproportionate houses and rocking cadence, were lost without anybody noticing it or shedding a tear. It was an inheritance that nobody wanted to claim.

These rooms are granted new significance by those of us who now occupy them. Our way of decorating them has a Bolshevik assault element to it. In contrast to the almost art-deco tone of the mouldings and taking advantage of the high ceilings, we bought a huge black industrial design lamp that heavily contrasts with the crystal chandeliers and the ceiling lights that probably hung here during the 1940s. Presiding one of the walls and in dialogue with the lamp, we placed a shortedition lithograph by Pepe Cerdá. It depicts a sunset over a bridge on the outskirts of the Ebro River with a glimpse of an industrial suburb. Cerdá is an expert in the light effects at dusk, and pulling from the school

of Goya, he converts his desolated landscapes into abstract forms, mere flashes of light. His painting is a window to the city where I come from, another external intrusion into the internal. It is also a window to my literature, which always searches in the limits of a city or a country.

Cerdá, with another name, was a character in one of my novels which I do not want to remember.

In regard to the monastic concept of the house as a retreat, my house places me in the centre of the world. Although my partner often accuses me of living in an intellectual bubble because I barely interact with people outside my artistic and journalistic world, I feel deeply contaminated by me here and now. Nothing can disengage me from contemporaneity, not my office, nor my living room, nor my kitchen. On the contrary, they drag me to it. I never stop feeling that the internal travels in the external through space and time. The entire neighbourhood, the boulevard, the ice cream parlour, the taxis, the fruit stores, the tapas bars and the terraces at the public square are integrated in the living room. My house covers much more than its walls and extends, perhaps not over the entire city, but at least over my neighbourhood.

In my own way, I continue to understand the poet Agüero’s detachment for property and objects.

I understand it from a paradoxical and hypocritical standpoint, from my house full of objects, from this bourgeois naivety that can seem insulting and banal to some. I understand it because I share a basic notion with it: privacy is social, we do not exist outside the polis and the only possible solitude is in the middle of a crowd.

In recent years, I have become very interested in Jewish literature and events. I haven’t been possessed by a mystical outburst, nor do I dream of emigrating to a kibbutz, but I do feel a strong affinity with the Hebrew culture and I think it is because, unlike other great religions, Judaism is more private than public. Strictly speaking, it does not even have a temple (a synagogue, in spite of being a sacred site, is not a temple but rather a meeting place for the community. The Jewish Temple,

as everyone knows, was destroyed twice in Jerusalem).

Contrary to what happens with Christianity and Islam, the Jewish faith is not expressed through great public manifestations associated with political power, but in simple ceremonies carried out in the living room of a house. It is a domestic religion, of family rituals.

Of course, this was not the case during Biblical times, and Jesus Christ was a reformer who fought against the institutionalised pageantry of the priestly elite. However, a house-focused non-proselytising vision was imposed, because the Jews believe that He (whose name cannot be pronounced) should be honoured by incorporating Him in all aspects of everyday life. The Torah (and the commentaries of the Talmud) simply provide advice on cooking, cleanliness and manners. If you can ignore how meticulous, ridiculous and insane these advices are, it is easy to feel a great sympathy for a religion that aimed to organise society from inside their homes, instead of placing uniformed people in the town square. For those of us who prefer to spend our lives reading in an armchair rather than merging with the mass in a stadium, Judaism is our aesthetic ideal. It is not strange that its nemesis, Nazism, was a movement that idolised the masses and open spaces.

I do not identify with the wandering Jew but with the static one, the one who cleans the menorah with a feather duster and leaves and empty chair for the prophet Elijah at the Passover table. I hate gregariousness and noisy places cause me distress, but my homely solipsism is not hermit-like. Like the Jews, I let God come inside my house, but since I am an atheist, what I have invited in is the whole world.

Silencio. En los jardines y las casas diseñadas por mí, siempre me he esforzado por permitir el murmullo del silencio, y en mis fuentes, el silencio canta.

Soledad. Sólo en la íntima comunión con la soledad puede el hombre encontrarse a sí mismo. La soledad es buena compañía y mi arquitectura no es para aquellos que la temen o la rechazan.

Serenidad. La serenidad es el gran y verdadero antídoto contra la angustia y el miedo, y hoy, más que nunca, es deber del arquitecto convertirlo en un huésped permanente en el hogar, sin importar cuán suntuoso o humilde sea. A lo largo de mi trabajo siempre me he esforzado por lograr la serenidad, pero uno debe estar en guardia para no destruirlo mediante el uso de una paleta indiscriminada.

Alegría. ¿Cómo se puede olvidar la alegría? Creo que una obra de arte alcanza la perfección cuando transmite alegría silenciosa y serenidad.

Muerte. La certeza de la muerte es el nacimiento de la acción y, por lo tanto, de la vida, y en el elemento religioso implícito en la obra de arte, la vida triunfa sobre la muerte.

Silence. In the gardens and homes designed by me, I have always endeavored to allow for the interior placid murmur of silence, and in my fountains, silence sings.

Solitude. Only in intimate communion with solitude may man find himself. Solitude is good company and my architecture is not for those who fear or shun it.

Serenity. Serenity is the great and true antidote against anguish and fear, and today, more than ever, it is the architect’s duty to make of it a permanent guest in the home, no matter how sumptuous or how humble.Throughout my work I have always strived to achieve serenity, but one must be on guard not to destroy it by the use of an indiscriminate palette.

Joy. How can one forget joy? I believe that a work of art reaches perfection when it conveys silent joy and serenity.

Death.The certainty of death is the spring of action and therefore of life, and in the implicit religious element in the work of art, life triumphs over death.

La casa debe poseer dos cualidades básicas para ser considerada arquitectura: 1. Debe apoyarse en una organización espacial simple que no se pueda reducir más.

2. Debe expresar alguna forma que implique “forma de casa”.

También es importante el significado simbólico y su efecto psicológico en el que la habita. Las imágenes tradicionales como el tejado, la ventana y la chimenea están arraigadas en lo más profundo de la mente. Estas formas concretas han sido interminablemente un cliché y en su mayoría percibidas como signos significativos, perdurando solo como algo kitsch. Pero a pesar de su degradación, algunos de estos signos simbólicos se requieren eternamente en el diseño de la arquitectura de la casa, por lo que se debe intentar expresarlos de la forma más exquisita posible.

The house must possess two basic qualities if it is to be considered architecture: 1. It must be supported by a simple spatial organization which cannot further be reduced.

2. It must express some shape which implies “house form”.

The symbolic significance of the house and its psychological effect on the dweller are also considered. Such traditional images as the roof, the window, and the fireplace are branded in the depths of the mind.These concrete shapes have been endlessly clichéd and mostly consumed as meaningful signs, remaining only as kitsch.

But despite their debasement, some of these symbolic signs are eternally required in the design of house architecture, so an attempt must be made to express them as exquisitely as posible.

En aquella casa había construido mi guarida. Era una madriguera en la que, cuando estaba triste, me escondía como un perro enfermo, y bebía mis lágrimas y lamía mis heridas. Allí dentro estaba como con una chaqueta vieja. ¿Por qué cambiar de casa? Cualquier otra casa sería mi enemiga, y yo habría vivido en ella con sensación de rechazo.

Veía desfilar ante mí, como en una pesadilla, todas las casas que habíamos visto y en algún instante habíamos pensado comprar.

Todas me inspiraban una sensación de rechazo. Pensamos en comprarlas, pero en el momento en que habíamos decidido renunciar a ellas habíamos sentido un profundo alivio, una ligereza, como quien ha escapado, de milagro, de un peligro mortal.

In that house I had built my den. It was a lair where I would hide when I was sad, and like a sick dog drink my tears and lick my wounds.

In there was like being inside an old coat.Why move house? Any other house would be my enemy and I would have lived in it with a feeling of aversion. I saw all of the houses we had seen and some we had thought of buying march in front of my eyes, as if it were a nightmare.

All of them produced a sense of rejection within me.We thought of buying them, but the moment we decided to pull out, we would feel such a deep sense of relief, a lightness, like someone who had narrowly escaped a mortal danger.

El poeta norteamericano Wallace Stevens dijo algo a los arquitectos (él quería serlo). Preguntó: “¿Qué porción de sol entra en tu habitación?” Es como decir que el sol no supo lo grande que era hasta que chocó contra el flanco de un edificio.

I think that the most inspiring point, from which we could start to try to understand architecture, is the room, the simple room, seen as the principle of architecture.When we enter our room, we know that we know it as nobody. As you know, at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, one of the largest centers for training in architecture, housing has never appeared in the programs of study.

No attention has ever been devoted to what makes up the life of all beings: the everyday, those moments and hours spent day after day, from childhood to death, in those rooms; square and simple places that can be exciting, constituting in reality the primordial theatre that give a stage to our acts of sensibility, from the moment we first open our eyes to life.

Juan Baraja. Toledo, España, 1984. Licenciado en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Barcelona. Ha desarrollado toda su carrera artística en el ámbito de la fotografía. Su obra se centra en espacios arquitectónicos abandonados o no habitados, y en cómo transcurre el tiempo de manera paralela y silenciosa en esos escenarios invisibles. Entre sus exposiciones individuales destacan Águas Livres (Espacio Líquido, Gijón), Catedrales (Utopía Parkway) o Archiitekturen (Ufferstudios, Berlín). En 2017 fue seleccionado por la Beca de la Real Academia Española en Roma.

La luz, el espacio y el tiempo son los elementos de una obra que intenta constantemente evitar una lectura narrativa, animando, por el contrario, al espectador a concentrarse en la percepción misma, enfatizando así el acto de ver y contemplar. Al explorar las posibilidades de la fotografía sin tema se emplea un punto de vista similar a la mirada de reojo para destacar el fondo sobre lo que está en primer plano. Light, space and time are the elements of a work that constantly tries to avoid a narrative reading, while instead encouraging the viewer to concentrate on perception itself, emphasizing thus the act of seeing and contemplating. When exploring the possibilities of photography without a subject, an out-of-the-corner-of-the-eye viewpoint is employed to promote background over foreground and the use of repetition and out of focus further underline Barth’s theoretical concerns.

Marwan Bassiouni. Suiza, 1985. Fotógrafo suizo, egipcio y estadounidense que reside actualmente en La Haya, Países Bajos. Con un gran interés en la ética islámica y en la filosofía estética “oriental”, Marwan considera que su enfoque es una forma de fotografía abstracta y positiva de “documental” / “arte”. A través de la fotografía fija, pretende inspirar experiencias visuales humanas y contemplativas. Marwan se graduó en la Royal Academy of Art (2018, Países Bajos). En mayo de 2019, Marwan publicará su primer libro New Dutch Views y tendrá su primera exposición individual en el Photomuseum de La Haya.

Marwan Bassiouni. Switzerland, 1985. Is a Swiss, Egyptian, American photographer who is currently based in the Hague, Netherlands. With a strong interest in Islamic ethics and ‘Eastern’ aesthetic philosophy Marwan considers his approach to be a form of abstract and positive ‘documentary’/’art’ photography. Through the still photograph, he aims to inspire humane and contemplative visual experiences. Marwan is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art (2018, The Netherlands). In May 2019, Marwan will publish his first book ‘New Dutch Views’ and have his first solo show in the Fotomuseum of The Hague.

Daniel Blaufuks. Lisboa, Portugal, 1963. Vive y trabaja en Lisboa. Ha desempeñado la docencia en diversas instituciones portuguesas y brasileñas. Sus imágenes surgen de sus numerosos viajes por el mundo, pero estas no se conforman con presentarse como meras anécdotas o documentos testimoniales de su desplazamiento espacial, sino que se engloban en un todo complejo que suele incluir diversos géneros y categorías fotográficas, y que en la mayoría de los casos está destinado a construir un relato en torno a la intimidad del autor.

Daniel Blaufuks. Lisbon, Portugal, 1963. Lives and works in Lisbon.

He has taught in various Portuguese and Brazilian institutions. His images arise from his numerous trips around the world, but these are not mere anecdotes or testimonial documents of his spatial displacement, but are encompass a complex whole that usually includes diverse genres and photographic categories, and which in most of cases serve as building a blocks of a tale involving elements pertaining to the author’s privacy.

Javier Campano. Madrid, España, 1950. De formación autodidacta, Javier Campano se inició profesionalmente en la fotografía en 1975. Sus comienzos están ligados a la revista Nueva Lente. Los grandes protagonistas de la fotografía de Campano son la ciudad y los interiores urbanos.

El artista busca en las ciudades que fotografía, ambientes y lugares cuya desaparición parece inminente, o instantes y atmósferas que sólo llegan a existir en la cámara, a veces con humor y a menudo con melancolía.

Sus fotografías presentan una sucesión de planos compuestos a veces geométricamente, en una construcción que parece casual.

Javier Campano. Madrid, Spain, 1950. Self-taught, Javier Campano began professional photography in 1975. His beginnings are linked to the magazine Nueva Lente. The main protagonists of Campano’s photography are the city and the urban interiors. The artist searches in the cities that photograph environments and places whose disappearance seems imminent, or instants and atmospheres that only come to exist in the camera, sometimes with humor and often with melancholy. His photographs show a succession of composite planes sometimes geometrically, in a construction that seems casual.

Rochelle Costi. Caxias do Sul, Brasil, 1961. Estudió comunicación en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Río Grande del Sur. Su obra se centra en temas relacionados con la vida cotidiana. Su mirada tiene un componente etnográfico, aproximándose al ámbito doméstico como índice de la vida y de las costumbres contemporáneas. En su serie Cuartos— Sao Paulo (1998), Costi invita al espectador a observar, con exhaustivo detalle, un universo humano específico, esto es, los espacios interiores de una de las ciudades más grandes de Brasil.

Rochelle Costi. Caxias do Sul, Brasil, 1961. She studied communication at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Her work focuses on issues related to everyday life. Her gaze has an ethnographic component, approaching the domestic sphere as an index of life and contemporary customs. In her series Cuartos-Sao Paulo (1998), Costi invites the viewer to observe, in exhaustive detail, a specific human universe, that is, the interior spaces of one of the largest cities in Brazil.

Tania Franco Klein. México, 1990. Comenzó su práctica fotográfica mientras realizaba la licenciatura en Arquitectura en Ciudad de México, lo que la llevó a realizar un máster en fotografía en University of the Arts London.

Su trabajo está muy influido por su fascinación por el comportamiento social y prácticas contemporáneas como el ocio, el consumo, la sobreestimulación de los medios de comunicación, la desconexión emocional, la obsesión por la eterna juventud, el sueño americano en el mundo occidental y las secuelas psicológicas que generan en nuestra vida cotidiana.

Tania Franco Klein. Mexico, 1990. She started her photography praxis while gaining her BA Architecture in Mexico City, which took her to pursue her Master in Photography at the University of the Arts London.

Her work is highly influenced by her fascination with social behavior and contemporary practices such as leisure, consumption, media overstimulation, emotional disconnection, the obsession with eternal youth, the American dream in the Western world and the psychological sequels they generate in our everyday life.

Karen Knorr. Frankfurt, Alemania, 1954. Creció en San Juan, Puerto Rico, y estudió en París y en Londres. Su obra profundiza con ironía y humor en las ideas que subyacen bajo el patrimonio artístico. A través de escenografías artificiosas, envuelve al espectador en su particular mundo material para lanzar homenajes que critican o cuestionan la cultura y la ideología actual. Karen Knorr. Frankfurt, Germany, 1954. She grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and studied in Paris and London. Her work deepens with irony and humor the ideas that underlie the artistic heritage. Through contrived scenographies, she involves the viewer in her particular material world to launch tributes that criticize or question current culture and ideology. Her images always include some human or animal figure that opens a reflection on their relationship with space.

Todd Hido. Kent, Ohio, EE. UU., 1968. Viaja sin parar, haciendo largos viajes por carretera en busca de imágenes que conecten con sus propios recuerdos. Hido is also a collector, and over the last twenty-five years has created one of the most notable photobook collections, which will be featured in Bibliomania: The World’s Most Interesting Private Libraries (Random House, 2019).

En su primera serie Hors-champ, publicada en 2006, se sumerge en los talleres de otros fotógrafos como Nicolas Chassot, Yann Fudala o Christine Schmid, para ofrecer una serie de imágenes que muestran el espacio personal de cada artista. En 2007 publicó su segundo libro, The Kodak City, un trabajo que aborda como tema central el paso de la fotografía analógica a la digital.

Unai Mateo. Bilbao, Spain, 1991. Unai’s work uses an introspective aspect in documentary photography to reflect the topics that obsess him. The search for beauty in the mundane and in the irrelevant is a recurrent theme in his work, treating it through internal monologues that happen as he does the work. He usually discovers the narrative of his projects towards the end of the creative process, deliberately forcing the scenario in which the concept is expressed purely through the instinctive gaze.

Su fotografía es honesta, cercana al retratado y haciendo una selección de la toma directa y limpia, sin artificios adicionales. Ha colaborado en numerosos proyectos literarios, con escritores como Julio Llamazares o Caballero Bonald, o a partir de textos como El Quijote.

Nic Nicosia. Texas, EE. UU., 1951. Su trabajo cuestiona la ecuación entre fotografía y verdad, construyendo escenografías que sirven como marco y contenido de sus imágenes. Su mirada respecto a los espacios domésticos revela el aparato complejo y artificial que supone la intimidad. Ha mostrado su trabajo en exposiciones en el ámbito internacional desde 1980 y ha sido seleccionado para las Bienales de Whitney de 1983 y 2000, The Guggenheim Exxon Show en 1983 y Documenta IV, 1992.

Nic Nicosia. Texas, USA, 1951. His work questions the equation between photography and truth, constructing sets that serve as a frame and content of his images. His gaze on domestic spaces reveals the complex and artificial apparatus that intimacy implies.

He has shown his work in international exhibitions since 1980 and has been selected for the Whitney Biennials of 1983 and 2000, The Guggenheim Exxon Show in 1983 and Documenta IV, 1992.

Emilio Pemjean. Arquitecto de formación, concibe su trabajo desde un marco interdisciplinar conectando la arquitectura, la pintura, la escultura, el vídeo o la fotografía. En sus proyectos reflexiona sobre el tiempo, lo presente y lo ausente, lo que ha sido destruido o transformado, los sistemas de representación y la capacidad de conversión en símbolos de objetos y arquitecturas mediante su reconstrucción manipulada. Ha mostrado su obra en espacios como la galería My name´s Lolita art (Madrid), el Colegio de España en París o el Centro de Arte Complutense (Madrid).

Thomas Ruff. Alemania, 1958. Ligado a la llamada Escuela de Düsseldorf, su obra se caracteriza por una estética fría, una mirada lo más neutral y desafectada posible, para acabar erigiendo imágenes planas técnicamente impecables y con una calidad de detalles que pone de manifiesto su preocupación formal por la desnudez y la pureza de registro.

Los temas que trata van desde retratos, peculiares visiones nocturnas, emblemáticos edificios, constelaciones astrales hasta desnudos pornográficos, publicidad re-fotografiada de Internet, u objetos industriales.

Dayanita Singh. India, 1961. La obra de Dayanita Singh utiliza la fotografía para reflejar y ampliar las formas en que nos relacionamos con las imágenes. Su trabajo reciente, extraído de su extensa obra fotográfica, es una serie de museos móviles que permiten que sus imágenes se puedan editar, secuenciar, archivar y mostrar infinitamente. Partiendo del interés de Singh en el archivo, los museos presentan sus fotografías como cuerpos de trabajo interconectados que están repletos de posibilidades tanto poéticas como narrativas.

Adam Wiseman. Ciudad de México, México, 1970. Estudia Etnographic Film en NYU, EE. UU., (1992) y Documentalismo en el ICP de Nueva York (1996), ciudad en la que vivirá como fotógrafo de prensa durante 13 años y colaborando con Magnum como impresor. Ha vivido en Brasil y Escocia. En 2001 regresa a México. Su trabajo (ampliamente premiado y expuesto) se basa en la esencia del documentalismo, la fotografía de prensa y la objetividad de los hechos. Paulatinamente aumenta el proceso de observación y análisis, desarrollando un subjetivismo que transforma sus proyectos en obras muy personales al margen del hecho que documenta.

Alba Yruela. La Bisbal, Girona, España, 1989. Creció en el Empordà, donde aprendió su pasión por la naturaleza. Vive entre Barcelona y Londres. Ha publicado los siguientes libros: Coco (2015), Flora (2014), Laura Amanda escribe Alba (2013), Estaría bien poner un título aquí (2011). Su fotografía se caracteriza por imágenes sutiles y fugaces de la intimidad y de la subjetividad, empleando gamas cromáticas siempre relacionadas con entornos naturales.

Emilio Pemjean. Architect of formation, he conceives his work from an interdisciplinary framework connecting architecture, painting, sculpture, video or photography. In his projects he reflects on time, the present and the absent, what has been destroyed or transformed, the systems of representation and the capacity for conversion into symbols of objects and architectures through their manipulated reconstruction.

He has shown his work in spaces such as the gallery My name’s Lolita art (Madrid), the College of Spain in Paris or Centro de Arte Complutense (Madrid).

Thomas Ruff. Germany, 1958. Linked to the so-called School of Düsseldorf, his work is characterized by a cold aesthetic, a look as neutral and disaffected as possible, to finish erecting images technically impeccable flat and with a quality of details that highlights his formal concern for nudity and the purity of registration. The themes he deals with range from portraits, peculiar nocturnal visions, emblematic buildings, astral constellations to pornographic nudity, rephotographed Internet advertising, or industrial objects.

Dayanita Singh. India, 1961. Dayanita Singh’s art uses photography to reflect and expand on the ways in which we relate to photographic images. Her recent work, drawn from her extensive photographic oeuvre, is a series of mobile museums that allow her images to be endlessly edited, sequenced, archived and displayed. Stemming from Singh’s interest in the archive, the museums present her photographs as interconnected bodies of work that are replete with both poetic and narrative possibilities.

Adam Wiseman. Mexico City, México, 1970. He studied Etnographic Film in NYU (1992) and Documentalism in the ICP of New York (1996), city in which he will live as photographer of press for 13 years, collaborating with Magnum as printer. He has lived in Brazil and Scotland. In 2001 he returns to Mexico. His work (widely awarded and exhibited) is based on the essence of the documentalism, the photojournalism and the objectivity of the facts. But he gradually increases the process of observation and develops a subjetivism that transforms his projects into very personal works further than the fact that it documents.
