El Silencio es una serie de dípticos desde la urgencia de evidenciar y mostrar la violencia intrafamiliar, la violencia de género, como toma de postura. “Muchas somos las mujeres que callamos los maltratos por el miedo a las amenazas contra nuestras vidas, el rechazo, abandono, dolor, humillación, torturas, odio, indiferencias, desconfianza, al derecho a la participación social y política.” Es la voz de la activista y fotógrafa Diva Estela Chota (Colombia), que a su vez es la voz de la mujer amazónica, que no está dispuesta a ser silenciada. Retratos que funcionan como lugares de la memoria y de resistencia. Para Chota ellas son mujeres que tienen que aprender a sonreír, en estos rostros miramos el porqué de su preocupación. La historia de la fotografía ha sido cimentando desde la mirada del otro, cuando la mirada del otro se convierte en la mirada de uno mismo desde la vulnerabilidad, es un espejo nítido de lo íntimo, lo desconcertante y perturbador. Mujeres sentadas en el interior de sus casas de tablones de maderas amazónicas, el espacio como telón y testigo al igual que los objetos fotografiados. Machetes, cintos, botas pantaneras, tijeras, fotografiados de manera cenital a la manera de la fotografía forense, objetos cargados de violencia, evidencia muda. El miedo tiene rostro, nombre conocido y vive en casa. La presencia del ser que intimida y oprime desde su ausencia: lo demencial. Lejos de ser una tipología, Chota va detrás de una fotografía de valoración ética, del como son los hechos desde la denuncia, con la intención de cambiar las cosas desde el activismo social, donde la fotografía es densidad expresiva, desde la alteridad, desde un mal cultural que radica aun en todas las sociedades, y no es privativo de las mujeres amazónicas aquí retratadas. Poco espacio para la subjetividad cuando lo privado se convierte en público y lo público en privado. Un tema tan caudaloso y tan actual como el río que no se puede silenciar. G . M . K .

El Silencio [Silence] is a series of diptychs that come out of the urgent need to bring to light domestic violence and gender violence, as a way of taking a stand. “There are many of us women who who keep quiet about our abuse, out of fear of the threats to our lives, rejection, abandonment, pain, humiliation, torture, hate, indifference, or out of suspicion of the right to social and political participation.” These are the words of activist and photographer Diva Estela Chota (Colombia), relaying the voices of Amazonian women who are unwilling to be silenced. Her portraits function as sites of memory and resistance. For Chota these are women who have to learn to smile; in their faces we can see why they are troubled. The history of photography has been built upon the gaze of the other. When the gaze of the other becomes one’s own gaze upon oneself, from a place of vulnerability, it serves as a mirror that reflects the realm of the intimate, the disconcerting and the disturbing. We see women seated in their homes, made of planks of Amazonian wood. We see belts, rubber boots and scissors photographed from above as if by a forensic photographer: objects charged with violence, mute evidence. Fear has a familiar face, a familiar name, and it lives at home. The one who intimidates and oppresses is present, even in his absence: the demented. Far from offering a typology, Chota goes beyond an ethically valuable photograph, beyond the facts, adopting a denunciative standpoint with the intention of changing things through social activism, where photography is expressive density, the standpoint of alterity, the standpoint of a cultural disease that is not exclusive to the Amazonian women portrayed here, but still rooted in all societies. There is little space for subjectivity when private become public and public, private: a subject matter that is as turbulent and as present as the river that cannot be silenced. G . M . K .
