Welcome Back It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly a year since we released our last brochure, following our most successful pantomime ever. We looked to that year ahead with a great sense of anticipation for what promised to be our strongest line-up of events ever. As we know that sense of anticipation was turned on its head on March 23rd with the announcement that all theatre’s in the country were to shut. Over the last nine months we’ve done a tremendous amount of work to keep the theatre viable and ensure our survival during this pandemic. We were fortunate that our application for a Culture Recovery Grant was accepted and we were awarded £832,000 by Arts Council England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The grant has been a lifeline allowing us the opportunity to navigate this difficult period until we’re able to return to hosting performances at our full auditorium capacity. As a result of the Culture Recovery Grant and the hard work of the Everyman Theatre’s dedicated staff we are able to present shows to a reduced capacity, socially distanced audience. Following trial performances in September and October and a comprehensive Health and Safety audit by one of the theatre industry’s most trusted organisations, R&B Health and Safety Solutions, we have reconfigured our seating plans to make your visit as safe as possible. Additional protocols have also been put in place. Among these are hand sanitiser dispensers stationed throughout the theatre, temperature checks and face coverings worn by all theatre staff and visitors.
Christmas magic you’ve come to expect from the Everyman Theatre. Our season continues after the pantomime with two new comedies in collaboration with Cirencester’s renowned Barn Theatre, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and a barking mad adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. We are very happy that we will have the opportunity to present The Everyman Theatre Company production of The Birthday Party, starring Michelle Collins and Tristan Gemmill, which was in the final week of rehearsals when we entered lockdown for the first time. The upcoming season will also see us hosting socially distanced versions of the ever popular Mischief Theatre production, The Play That Goes Wrong and a star studded staging of Michael Frayn’s comedy Benefactors, starring Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the Everyman Theatre who have continued to work hard during our enforced closure and our loyal customers who have supported us by purchasing vouchers and remaining patient and encouraging while we navigate the complicated process of rescheduling events that were due to take place in the previous year. Now, more than ever, theatre needs your support, and we all need the communion and shared experience that theatre provides. We hope you will join us so that we can all move forward together. Our first priority for socially distanced productions is to present some version of our annual pantomime. While we will not able to deliver our planned production of Jack and the Beanstalk until December of 2021, we have created an all new show, which we hope perfectly encapsulates and finds the humour in this particular moment in time. The Everyman Theatre Company brings together a star cast, including Michelle Collins and Tristan Gemmill, to present Pinter’s classic and most performed darkly-comic masterpiece. Best known for her roles as Cindy Beale in EastEnders and Stella Price in Coronation Street, Michelle has graced our screens and stage for over 30 years. “Fairness and tidiness and truth are for people who’ve got what they want already.” In their comfortable period house, David is busy designing a new architectural scheme for a run-down area of South London while his wife, Jane, is doing her best to help its deprived and struggling tenant. They also have a redevelopment project nearer to home: David’s old school chum Colin and his wife Sheila, whose lives aren’t quite as desirable as their neighbours.
