Everyman Theatre Brochure September 2025

Welcome

Everyman theatre to raise £1 million to create a new education and community venue in west cheltenham

I hope you’ve had a great summer and are looking forward to the upcoming season, featuring a fantastic line-up of shows at The Everyman this Autumn. As ever, the highlight of our year is our annual Pantomime Spectacular. This year, we are eagerly anticipating Tweedy, taking on the role of Friar “Tweedy” Tuck in Robin Hood and His Merry Men (page 20).

While most of you are aware of the tremendous impact our productions have on the people of Gloucestershire, you may not be aware that The Everyman Theatre is a charity and that we reinvest the proceeds from our creative output into education and community outreach for the county.

Our charitable work for many decades has been extensive and wide-reaching; however, we have been searching for an opportunity to expand our offering into new areas and have a greater impact on the community. Fortunately, I was permitted by our board to acquire an underutilized facility on Grove Street in Cheltenham, which we will transform into our new Education and Community Centre. This new space will allow us to expand our provision of vital services for the young and underserved communities of Gloucestershire through participation in our summer schools, choirs, youth theatres and other artistic engagement endeavours.

I am determined to make our Grove Street facility a centre for excellence in creative arts, but we need your help to realise our vision. To that end, we are launching a £1 million fundraising campaign which will allow us to refurbish the existing facility and make it a welcoming, safe space for the entire county. This is an opportunity for all our supporters to contribute to this worthy project. Please visit our website (everymantheatre.org.uk) and see some truly inspirational videos about the work that we do, which we hope will persuade you to contribute to this project. This brochure also contains more information on our new centre (page 44).

The Everyman Theatre is the cultural heart of Cheltenham, and I know how many of you love visiting this historic building. Our new education centre is your chance to help us extend that love of the arts to others. Please help us if you can.

Sincerely,

Architect's rendering of Grove Street

A comedy thriller by Torben Betts.

Starring national favourites Jason Durr (Heartbeat, Casualty) & Susie Blake (Victoria Wood’s as Seen on TV, Coronation Street) and Max Bowden, best known as Ben Mitchell in Eastenders and Katie McGlynn (Waterloo Road, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks).

A killer night out!

From the writer of Murder in the Dark, comes a deliciously twisted crime caper like no other.

It’s New Year’s Eve in a quiet corner of Kent, and a killer is in the house…

We meet Jonny ‘The Cyclops’ - the notorious gangster, his glamorous wife, his trigger-happy sidekick, his mum, who’s seeing things, her very jittery carer, plus a vicar who’s hiding something, and a nervous burglar dressed as a clown.

Throw in a suitcase full of cash, a stash of deadly weapons, and one infamous unsolved murder… What could possibly go wrong?

As midnight looms, tarot cards foretell doom, police lights flash in the distance, and a killer is in the house.

Everyone’s hiding something—but who’s telling the truth?

Join us for a murder mystery with a difference. One house. Seven suspects and a Murder at Midnight…

From the mind of acclaimed writer Torben Betts and produced by the award-winning Original Theatre (Birdsong, Murder in The Dark and Agatha Christie’s The Mirror Crack’d), Murder at Midnight is a gripping murder mystery filled with twists, chilling suspense and wickedly dark humour – guaranteed to keep you guessing until the final stroke of midnight.

Ardal O’Hanlon: Not Himself

After an alarming experience at the supermarket, Ardal reflects on who he is as a man and a comedian. He examines his ethnic and religious background and thinks twice about the very core of his identity as a voice of reason.

Is everything a big lie? With no major trauma of his own to draw on for material, apart from the drag of getting older, he also turns his gaze outwards at the joys and follies of contemporary life. Towel Animals? A.I.? Chair Yoga? Cauliflower as a main course? Yes. Yes. Yes. No current idiocy is left un-examined. With a highly developed sense of the ridiculous and proper comedy bones, Not Himself is a testament to the healing power of humour. And the joy of jokes.

Guys And Dolls

Frank Loesser's celebrated musical comedy about rolling the dice and falling in love under the bright lights of Broadway.

Ukrainian National Opera

We are delighted to welcome back the Dnipro Opera from Ukraine performing two classic operas

Madama Butterfly

No opera can match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini's Madama Butterfly.

Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy.

Though infinitely sad and tragic, the compelling tale of Madama Butterfly remained Puccini’s favourite opera – his supreme theatrical achievements also gave the world its most sublime and beautiful arias in history - One Fine Day and Love Duet, as well as the Humming Chorus, which has been popular with opera-goers for over a century.

This touching tale of innocent love crushed between two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

The infatuated Don José abandons his childhood sweetheart and neglects his military duties, only to lose the fickle Carmen to the glamorous toreador Escamillo.

English Touring Opera

English Touring Opera returns to the Everyman Theatre with Leoncavallo’s drama Pagliacci and Gilbert & Sullivan’s comedy of errors The Gondoliers. Both are sung in English with English surtitles.

The Gondoliers by Gilbert & Sullivan

Two handsome and charming gondoliers discover that one is the long-lost heir to the throne of Barataria - but which one?

In the pursuit of the truth, a bewildering series of events threaten both their marriages and their claim to the throne.

The Gondoliers, Gilbert and Sullivan’s last great success, is a fizzing comedy of mistaken identity that marries joy and chaos with a sharp satire of monarchy and class.

This new production is helmed by Liam Steel, who directed ETO’s Olivier Award-winning production of Paul Bunyan.

Pagliacci by Leoncavallo

When Canio, leader of a theatre troupe, sees his life reflected in rehearsals for an upcoming opera, he becomes convinced that his wife is having an affair.

Can Canio temper his spiralling emotions, or will his jealousy get the better of him?

Art imitates life in English Touring Opera’s new production of Pagliacci. Ripped from the headlines about a real-life crime case from composer Ruggero Leoncavallo’s own childhood, Pagliacci packs passion, melodrama and revenge into an intense 90 minutes of drama.

Eleanor Burke (founder of the pioneering sustainable opera company, Green Opera) makes her directorial debut with ETO alongside ETO Music Director Gerry Cornelius.

Making A Killing Marcella's Minute To Midnight

1590, Nuremberg. Europe teeters on the edge of modernity, but in the shadow of the gallows, executioner Frantz Schmidt has more immediate concerns.

Torturer, hangman and—most unusually—a meticulous diarist, Frantz wrestles with a family curse that haunts his every step. When a brash new assistant arrives, tensions ignite, and the stage is set for a clash that could tear their brutal world apart.

Inspired by the notorious diary of Frantz Schmidt, Making a Killing plunges into a gritty world of power, betrayal and ambition.

Marcella’s awakening happens in her mid-sixties when a botched eBay order forces her into the loft and prompts the decluttering of a lifetime.

Faced with artefacts that provoke a host of vivid memories, Marcella embarks upon an unpredictable and unexpected journey through her past. Choosing what to hold on to and what to let go of brings her close to a full-blown late-life crisis.

Surrounded by seemingly discarded objects and aspirations, Marcella begins to feel strangely alert and starts to wonder if she is still allowed a dream or two.

Stripped of ensemble, staging, and spectacle, what remains is raw: one man, one voice, and the ghosts that will not let him rest.
