Ask for recommendations.
The easiest way to start is to ask neighbors, family members, and friends for their recommendations. Word-of-mouth recommendations speak volumes about a company’s work and reputation. After all, you’re hearing from people with first-hand experience!
Search social media.
Social media sites shouldn’t be your only source of information when it comes to finding a good contractor, but they can be a valuable resource.
Search for the companies on your list and check their social media feeds for customer testimonials. You might also find photographs of the company’s workmanship.
Research your choices.
Look online for the following about each contractor on your list:
1. Qualifications. Make sure that the company you hire has plenty of experience in the type of work you need to have done. A company that has been in business for decades is great, but don’t automatically write off companies that are newly established. Their staff members might have years of industry experience.
2. Certifications. Not all home improvement jobs require specific trade certifications, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Certifications typically mean extra training or education, and that’s never a bad thing.
3. Licenses. Most states require contractors performing major home improvement or renovation work to hold a license. A company that doesn’t have its state- or county-required licenses is waving a red flag that you shouldn’t ignore. In fact, many homeowners’ insurance carriers will deny damage claims resulting from work performed by an unlicensed contractor.
4. Bonding. A company that is bonded has an extra layer of accountability if you need to file a claim against them. A bonded company has access to money that will go directly to you if something goes amiss with the job and you file a claim.
5. Insurance. Any company doing work at your house should have active general liability insurance coverage. Depending on your state, the company might also be required to have workers’ compensation insurance.
6. Areas of specialization. Doing home improvement and renovation work well takes a lot of skill and experience. If the job is detail oriented or specialized, that skill and experience is even more important. Be sure to ask whether the company has experience with jobs similar to yours.
7. Professionalism. Everyone wants to be treated with respect, especially when large sums of money are involved. Skim the company’s online reviews. How do they respond to negative or neutral feedback? How does the company handle your calls or emails? These details will give you valuable insight into the company’s professionalism.
8. Assurance and guarantees. A guarantee can help you feel more at ease with a company, and it speaks volumes about the company’s confidence in the quality of their work.
Most of this information is available online, usually on the company’s website. For details you can’t immediately locate, a quick phone call can usually help fill in any gaps.
Use a verified directory and online reviews.
Look for unbiased customer reviews in independent business directories like Five Star Rated. Online home improvement forums and review websites are helpful, too.
Avoid sites that let companies buy highly rated reviews. This practice is unethical, but it does happen. Watch for several extremely positive reviews posted on the same day following a negative review. Lots of good reviews that sound similar are also a red flag.

Spring
Turn your outside spigots back on and remove their insulating covers. Check each spigot to make sure it’s secure and doesn’t leak, and give your garden hose a once-over to check for cracks.
Have your gutters cleaned. Make sure downspouts are still attached and directed away from your house and foundation.
Schedule a routine HVAC maintenance appointment. Clear away any debris from around the outside condenser unit. Also test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace their batteries.
Have your lawn service aerate your yard and spread pre-emergent for weed control. Now is the time to prune trees, shrubs, and bushes.
Inspect the outside of your house for siding cracks or holes, peeling paint, and failing sealant or caulk. Repair and replace as needed.
Summer
Water your lawn and landscaping regularly. Aim for early-morning hours to minimize water evaporation in the heat.
Stain and seal your wood fence and deck. Be sure to pressure wash them first so the stain will last longer and look nicer over time.
Set your ceiling fans to turn counterclockwise. This creates a breezy downdraft, which can help you use the air conditioning less.
Fall
Fall is the time to overseed your lawn and plant perennials. Your work now will have a big payoff come springtime.
Get in the habit of raking leaves (or mowing over them with your lawnmower) periodically so they don’t build up and smother the grass.
Have the gutters cleaned in late fall, after the bulk of the leaves have fallen. Fall is also a good time to have your roof inspected.
Schedule your second annual HVAC system maintenance appointment. Your technician should ensure the heat works and that all components are in safe working order.
If you’ve noticed drafts coming from the windows or doors, seal any gaps with caulk or weatherstripping. This will cut down on heat loss through the winter.
Winter
Drain your outdoor water spigots, and then shut off the water to them. Cover the faucets with insulating covers. Drain your garden hose and store it indoors.
Test all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace their batteries.
Make sure you’re ready for snow and cold temperatures. Test your snow blower and dig out the snow shovel.
