A Small Step in 2012 After spending several years strengthening our multi-drug resistant tuberculosis program in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), EugeneBell added two new sites to our network of treatment centers in 2012. This means that we now have a total of eight treatment centers where we can enroll patients who are fighting for their lives against MDR TB. As a rule, we try to focus on people rather than numbers. Still, sometimes statistics are helpful in giving the big picture. We can admit 50-60 new patients at each treatment center annually. Growing by two new centers means that we can now enroll an additional hundred new patients each year! Not all of the patients treated at our centers are cured of MDR TB. Still, I am sure you agree that giving one hundred more people every year a chance to live is something to celebrate. With eight treatment centers, EugeneBell will now be able to admit almost 500 new patients to our program each year. Adding more treatment centers in 2012 was a big step for EugeneBell. But sadly, this was just a small step forward for North Korean tuberculosis sufferers. Even with eight centers EugeneBell is only able to reach about 10% of North Korea’s estimated MDR TB patients. Still we are hopeful. With continued support from our generous donors, we hope to take more small steps to reach even more patients with life-saving treatment. Thank you for playing such an important role in this effort in 2012! Stephen W. Linton, Ph.D. Chairman

Eugene Bell Foundation

What motivated our spinsors? Your sincere concern saves TB patients lives. We will always keep you in mind and do our best to communicate your love.

Sponsor Jinhak Byeon

I trust EugeneBell for its sincerity in helping North Korean patients. I want to aid our fellow compatriots.

Sponsor Huisan Noh

When there are many humanitarian efforts that reach African refugees, our fellow Koreans were suffering from MDR TB without proper medication. Yet, I saw foreigners reaching out to help them selflessly.

Sponsor Jinyoung Kim

I became interested when my mother and I were screened for tuberculosis.

Sponsor Seonggyu Park I want to join in fighting tuberculosis in North Korea. Sponsor Jongjin Park

I was inspired while watching a TV program on EugeneBell’s provision of medicine and medical supplies to North Korea.

Sponsor Jaenam Hwang

I want to make this little donation, for the day when the two Koreas unite and all Koreans live healthily and happily together.

Sponsor Hwanwook Kwon

My deceased father's hometown is in North Korea. I hope that I can be of some help to the people in North Korea because we are all related.

Sponsor Giseop Kim

Watching Dr. Linton, I felt like I found a true patriot and I was impressed. I always knew there are needy people around me but I never really reached out to them. But I will now extend my hand to help our North Korean patients. For the rest of my life, I will donate $20 a month to show my support.

Sponsor Inkwon Choi

I want to help our North Korean neighbors who have no choice but to live in difficult conditions.

Sponsor Jiyoung Seo

After seeing Dr. Linton on television, I was surprised at the realities of North Korea and wanted to give this small donation. I hope to contribute more in the future.

Sponsor Jongseop Kim

I want to help save even one life.

Sponsor Hyeonsuk Kim

It is my desire that hope will fill the hearts of North Koreans leading such difficult lives‌

Sponsor Eunchong Byeon It is wrong to neglect our compatriots because of our history

12

and current relationship. Rather, we should reach out our helping hands to save them.

Sponsor Changmin Lee

Wishing for all hearts to unite as one in love.

Sponsor Dahwa Lee

Because it brings me such joy to know that I can bring hope to them.

PVtech (Incorporated)

Because North Koreans are our compatriots, I believe that the South Korean government and citizens must wholeheartedly help them. I hope to gradually increase my donations.

Sponsor Dongwok Park

I would like to send my regards to our compatriots in the North. I will send my small but continuous donations.

Sponsor Seonghee Ra

I want to show my support to the North Koreans who are suffering from tuberculosis.

Sponsor Taegeun Kim

I was born in Hwanghae Province, and contracted tuberculosis as a teenager. I am cured now. I hope to be of some strength to our neighbors in the North going through TB treatment.

Sponsor Chanmi Park

I attended Dr. Linton’s lecture at the Hannam University Chapel. As I listened to his words, I came to realize that this work is meant for us to step in and help. My grandfather had a long battle against cancer and passed away. Ever since, my heart aches whenever I see patients in pain. That is why I was able to empathize with the patients and their loved ones in the video clip. When my grandfather was suffering in the hospital, a North Korean defector woman took care of my grandfather as a caretaker; her sincerity allowed me to feel a closer connection to North Koreans. This is the reason that I show my support. Although I’m just a student and cannot donate as much as I would like, I will show support with what I have.

Sponsor Haneul Lee

I would like to make a donation on behalf of my child who just turned one year old. It is my hope that my child will later help others in need as well.

Sponsor Changlang Kang

Because I trust the Eugene Bell Foundation and that each and every valuable donation goes to treating the patients.

Sponsor Sooyoung Kwon

My children and I want to support North Korean children. My fiveyear-old and eight-year-old are contributing their New Years Day earnings and wish the patients the best.

Sponsor Seohyeon Kim

My sister recently passed away from tuberculosis. In remembrance of my sister and to show my heart for her, I give this donation to aid tuberculosis patients.

Sponsor Hyoungjae Lim

My parents were born in North Hamgyong Province. My deceased father’s childhood stories taught me that we must take care of and embrace North Koreans. I would like to show my gratitude to EugeneBell for its efforts.

Sponsor Myounghoon Lee I was under long-term treatment for lymphatic tuberculosis. I send my support to those who are suffering from TB. Sponsor Wonjoon Lim

I am a high school student. I was writing about Korean reunification and learned more about North Korea. That is when I started to believe that reunification must occur –I want to dedicate my career to work towards reunification.

Sponsor Seungyeop Hwang

When I was young, I underwent three years of tuberculosis treatment. By chance through the media I learned about Eugenebell’s work in providing humanitarian aid to North Korea and wanted to dedicate my support to this cause.
