I approached MOTHER WAR with the hopes of dedicating a piece towards my ethnic background as a Korean, however the painting slowly evolved into another theme of motherhood, with the twist of personal family relations, more specifically, my grandmother. My grandmother grew up during the Korean War and lost her childhood because of the constant fear she had to face in the motherland. However, the moms’ in that era suffered more than anyone, for they not only had to take care of themselves but their children. For years, they have properly protected and well-fed their young ones regardless of the condition outside. However, when comparing the love of an old fashioned mom to the future of automaticity in technology, what if moms are substituted by these methods? I wanted this piece to show the controversy between new generation expectations versus traditions by contrasting the fetus in colour and all alone and the old lady carrying the little boy.
