So, whilst the benefit of your gift will be felt immediately its impact on the endowment will be perpetual.
Esto Perpetua asks one simple question: would you like to support Eton?
We hope you will say yes and, if you have happy memories of playing sport at Eton or have a son today who is a keen sportsman then this is the perfect project to donate to.
In 2023 Eton launched Esto Perpetua, a new approach to fundraising which moves from campaigns of short duration to a continuous funding plan which will provide financial security over the very long term. Building this complex is a key priority over the next three years.
This project lies at the heart of what we call ‘Eton Fundamentals’. We believe that the quality of an Eton education lies in the totality of its offering. Each boy has an opportunity to build a bespoke programme, often unique to them. In the academic and co-curriculum alike they are able to choose from a great range of possibilities so that no two boys' experiences are the same. The scale of the building and the many different spaces within it are critical to delivering this.
Your support will make a very considerable difference.
The Provost and Fellows have underwritten the programme with funds from the endowment. This was necessary to allow the lengthy period of planning and consultation which led to the design and permission.
But every pound donated to this project ensures that more of the endowment stays invested and continues
to supply the annual drawdown which makes such a difference to the life of the institution. So, whilst the benefit of your gift will be felt immediately, its impact on the endowment will be perpetual.
So: would you like to support Eton?
THE ETON COLLEGE INDOOR SPORTS COMPLEX
Since 2014 when the plan for the sports complex was first initiated we have been focused on transforming sport at Eton. We have a simple premise based around three aims: participation, performance and enjoyment.
Our start point, then, is participation. As a full boarding school we have a responsibility to provide the very best opportunities for as many boys as possible in as many areas as possible. Therefore, although this building will contain some spaces dedicated to key sports such as fencing or squash, the vast sports hall, the studio, the dojo and the Athlete Performance Centre are designed for versatility, supporting a broad range of activities. Scale is essential to ensure the building remains lively and energetic each afternoon, while also preventing congestion around more popular pursuits. Particular attention has been given to storage solutions enabling staff to quickly repurpose spaces and minimise downtime throughout the day. Our ambition is to ensure that every boy can find an activity in which he can thrive, regardless of whether he is adept or not.
We are also committed to ensure that boys can perform at the top of their ability. Many schools pride themselves on the performance of their elite athletes. We celebrate both those who are excellent in absolute terms whilst also recognising that relative performance – challenging oneself to improve – is critical to every pupil. The facilities will allow cricketers, golfers, squash players, and fencers of all levels from beginner to expert to improve and prepare for competition. All boys will be able to benefit from conditioning programmes that might be sport-specific in nature or focused on general athletic development. A large facility is able to be inclusive rather than exclusive.
Finally, we never lose sight of the fact that enjoyment is key. Etonians are ambitious and determined in many areas of their lives. Competition for places at the best
universities is intense and the pressure on young people is well understood in contemporary society. This building, like Athens, is designed as a place of resort – somewhere to come and enjoy a competitive game of squash with a friend, to take a turn on the climbing wall or hone one’s skills in a martial art. It also provides a place to relax and enjoy the company of one’s friends, perhaps playing in an informal five-a-side competition.
In 2027, when this building is formally opened it will provide a long-needed facility for Eton. Many projects are called ‘transformative’ – this one certainly will be. Finally, we will have a sports complex capable of accommodating the energy and enthusiasm of our pupils - designed to meet their needs and support their passions.
Our ambition is to ensure that every boy can find an activity in which he can thrive.
Main Sports Hall
At the heart of this complex will be the ‘large hall’. This is designed to be a single open volume which can be divided and used in multiple ways. It will be critical to the development of a ‘whole school’ sports programme.
As a school with care for thirteen hundred boys our ambition is to provide every boy with sporting opportunities tailored to his needs. As a result, this hall will encompass the ambitions of our top sportsmen as well as provide a broad opportunity for many for whom sport is an enjoyable activity, underpinning mental health and physical wellbeing.
Put simply the hall will allow us to run a varied and active sports programme. It is designed to enable multiple simultaneous uses, from cricket nets running alongside gymnastics and trampolining practice. It will also ensure that on a wet afternoon large numbers of boys can enjoy a vigorous work out with five-a-side football, simultaneous games of badminton or volleyball or more idiosyncratic activities organised by the sports staff.
At the same time, the hall will support the development of a more intense programme in those sports which
require a court. Hitherto, the numbers of boys who could access those activities was limited by the number of sports that could be played together in the space available. In future, substantial numbers of boys will be able to train and play different sports in the same area.
The sports hall will also allow Eton to become a hub for competitions. It will allow the sports staff to timetable major competitions with multiple schools and clubs ensuring that our pupils have access to a broad and competitive timetable where we can run many different teams at all levels of ability and age group.
As a boarding school we are also adept at offering leisure time activities, where the accent is as much on fun and participation as it is competition. We already have a healthy culture of house sport and the hall will augment this by allowing boys from different houses to enjoy activities on a Saturday evening, for example.
Underpinning any competitive sport today is the need for a participant to understand his body, to be able to strengthen it and to have access to an ideal training facility.
The Athletics Performance Centre is designed for this. It will provide a dedicated space, which is well lit and airy where boys can safely train with resistance machines, free weights and cardio-vascular equipment.
As school sport becomes ever more competitive the physical challenge that boys face has intensified. As a result, it is essential that they have access to a wellmanaged ‘performance centre’ where they can learn to train themselves. The Centre will inhabit a dedicated space on the first floor. It will be well equipped with a range of equipment and be managed by experts in strength and conditioning.
Boys will be able to go in after their field sport training either to work together as a team or at other times of
the day to follow their own programme. The emphasis will be on learning good training practice, of ensuring that boys follow a scheme tailored to their needs and to bear down on unsafe or slack routines. Associated with this will be a room on the ground floor with more standard ‘gym’ equipment such as watt bikes, treadmills and ergos where more intense ‘cardio’ workouts will be possible.
The design team have ensured that the APC will be an open space with plenty of natural light and good ventilation. A central feature will be the reopening of the great arched window out on to Common Lane. We expect this to become a key space where many boys learn the good habits and training techniques to sustain a life of full activity and physical challenge.
THE ETON COLLEGE INDOOR SPORTS COMPLEX
Eton has a long and distinguished history as a centre for climbing. More recently, boys have been enthusiastic and successful competitors in sports climbing, now an Olympic sport. The new facility will have a competition-level climbing wall and a bouldering wall on the mezzanine. Both areas will be fully adaptable, allowing for the regular creation of new routes and training challenges—enabling Etonians to develop their skills on site.
Ever since the Italian fencing master Domenic Angelo opened ‘The School of Arms’, Eton has taught fencing. The building will provide a dedicated salle with all the necessary equipment to both train and compete at the highest level. The room will be on the second floor and will cater for school matches and training for all abilities. Eton will be able to build on the traditional strength of this sport and continue to compete for national honours.
Golf is a sport for life and a good grounding in the key techniques is the critical foundation for a lifetime in the sport. Our golf simulator will have its own designated room and will transform the training we can offer boys, year-round and at all times of the day. We will be able to work on all aspects of a boy's swing and be able to ‘play’ some of the great courses in the world. This, coupled with our nine-hole golf course, provides the perfect preparation for an enthusiastic golfer.
Eton has had a ‘dojo’ for many years and this will be a multi-purpose space allowing boys to learn the skills required for a range of martial arts. This wellproportioned room with ample storage will be able to also offer quieter activities such as yoga which are key to enhancing boys' wellbeing and allowing for periods of relaxation and meditation in the midst of a busy school life.
Our existing 25-metre rifle range will be restored and refurbished. Its central location within the School will allow a renewed focus on house shooting competitions, providing opportunities to identify talented shots who can join the VIII and represent the school at a variety of external events.
Eton will provide a dedicated squash centre with two types of courts: one set glass backed allowing ease of coaching and as ‘show courts’ in competition. The other set, fully walled, will be ideal for beginners and those developing their confidence. Squash is growing in popularity at Eton, with increasing numbers of pupils taking part. The new facilities will support this growth by enabling both internal competition through the squash ladders and a full programme of inter-school matches.
