FROM THE PROVOST & THE HEAD MASTER

As I begin my last year as Provost I am beginning to reflect on the changes - and the continuity – I have seen at Eton since I first arrived here as a rather nervous twelve-year-old in the Lent Half of 1959. What is unchanging is the excellence of so much of what is achieved at Eton, by staff in all roles, teaching and non-teaching. It is a continual pleasure to witness our commitment to the precept written up in the early sixteenth century in the Head Master’s Chamber: “the task of the school teacher is to find the individual talent of the pupil.” That is unchanging; much else has developed and changed to keep up with changing needs.

We now have an ambitious programme of bursaries here at Eton, spending far more than ever before on helping boys to come here who need support with fees. We have a major external partnership with Star Academies, and with others. We are at the forefront of modern teaching methods and research. All this is underpinned by an efficient and modern development campaign to which some many generous friends have contributed.

Eton is flourishing, as its motto hopes, and has an enormous amount to give both to the boys who come here and more widely.

I look forward immensely to working with my chosen successor over the next year to ensure that all this momentum for good is maintained as I know it will be.

As a charity for the advancement of education with ambitious plans for the future, it remains the boys and staff who make Eton what it is. This is central to the College’s recently published strategy which has been designed to evolve through a period of enquiry and discussion.

We will ensure that our curriculum is well suited to the challenges of the modern world whilst rooted in the deeper values we hold dear. We will further develop our boarding provision and re-energise the tutorial system that so many of you will remember with affection. In addition, we will build our contribution to education more broadly in the United Kingdom – recognising that we can only do this whilst Eton itself continues to be an outstanding school.

I am delighted that the Government has approved our plans, made in partnership with Star Academies, to open three new sixth form Colleges through the Free Schools programme, in Dudley, Middlesbrough and Oldham. This is the culmination of much hard work and now sets us the significant challenge of building three new schools from scratch. Our partners have years of experience and expertise in doing just that and so we are confident of delivery but we are also determined to ensure that these new schools reflect Eton’s educational ethos, to the benefit of children living far beyond the banks of the Thames.

Whilst we are excited about what lies ahead, it is my purpose to thank you for all that you have done to get us to this point.

Your support is critical to our future. Your gifts make a material difference to the College. But your goodwill, your thoughtful advice and above all your enthusiasm for this great place sustains all of us who work here and gives us great confidence as we look ahead. THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT The 2021/22 year has been one of digging foundations.

The experience of the pandemic sharpened our thinking about Eton as an institution, about its priorities and what was required for these to be achieved. We were clear we wanted our thoughts to flow in logical steps, from focusing first of all on the School strategy and then ensuring that our fundraising plan was aligned with that. So, we have done a lot of work widely through the College to think about Eton as it is today and what its future might be.

This year we launched Esto Perpetua, our long-term fundraising plan. It sets out to explain to current and future donors our priorities and to set those in the context of an analysis of how Eton functions as an ‘evergreen’ institution. In particular, it highlights the role of the endowment and how donations to the endowment can support our work not for a few years, or even a few decades but for ever.

It also explains Eton’s financial needs by setting out our plans and attached costs and showing how an increase in the endowment will allow us to achieve a set of clearly defined goals.

In short, it is designed to allow the reader to come away with a clear understanding of why we fundraise in the first place.

At the heart of Esto Perpetua are three areas of need. The first is for Eton itself as a school and will support programmes and buildings on site, following the lead set by the campaigns for Tennis and Rackets. Gifts in this area will impact generations of Etonians now and in the future. The second is for bursaries.

These can be life-changing for the recipients, as you will have read in previous editions of this publication, but they also allow Eton to ensure that we welcome a wide spectrum of talented young men which has always been key to the spirit of the place.

Finally, we also look outwards to our partnerships work. This too has a double benefit both in creating new institutions of national significance but also placing Eton at the heart of a vibrant educational network which will strengthen us as much as it achieves its broader goals.

To achieve success, we have built a team to allow us to put forward our ideas effectively, to engage people with them and to identify and work with donors to allow our plans to take shape.

I have therefore taken on the role of Director of Communications, Engagement and Development to ensure that these three key functions of the College work in harmony. I am very pleased to introduce Benjamin Smith as our Head of Development.

Benjamin brings a wealth of experience on three continents and his professional skills will sit at the heart of a modern development office which can act as an effective advocate for this great School. Benjamin, together with Sarah Bridge and Jacob Ward who have both joined us from development offices in Oxford, will be reaching out to many of you in the coming months to have a detailed conversation about Esto Perpetua and they and I look forward to meeting and thanking you for all you do for Eton.

STUDENT ENRICHMENT If you visited the Willowbrook Tennis Courts in the first week of July in any year you would see the benefit of fundraising in action. It is always the week of the Independent Schools Tennis Association (ISTA) competition and every court is thronged with eager players. The expansion of Eton’s tennis provision in the first decade of this century has paid dividends, allowing us to host ISTA’s major season-topping tournament for the benefit of all.

The completion of the School Hall project offers the same thing for music with the space and context to host visiting groups in a perfect small concert hall.

By investing in our co-curricular spaces, we not only allow our own boys to enjoy their benefits but have the capacity to share with a far wider community – gradually making good on our promise to be a good neighbour and effective charity nationally.

Eton Fives and Eton Rackets It is very good to be able to announce the commencement of the works on the Fives and Rackets courts. Contractors are on site and have begun the delicate work of preserving the historic playing surfaces whilst upgrading and modernising the buildings that support them.

Jack’s is being completely refurbished to create a Fives centre which will be named to celebrate the generosity of the late Michael Constantinidi (JDU, DCW 46) – and will have both a space to change and a reception room below – the Fives equivalent of the Long Room at Lord’s – reminding us that Eton is, of course, the home of Fives.

The Rackets facility is also undergoing a similar remodelling with improved galleries and reception spaces. In both cases the playing spaces are left untouched, although better lit, allowing them to play as true and as fast as they ever did. This project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024.

School Hall School Hall opened with a magnificent concert in Lent 2023.

The acoustics are astonishing. The seating and sightlines are perfect for a hall of this size and the lavatories commodious both for men and women. In short, with the generosity of Jean and Melanie Salata, we have restored School Hall, itself a noble memorial to the South African War, to its former glory and its position at the heart of the School.

TEACHING & LEARNING Over the past few years, the development of technology in teaching has proceeded at a dizzying pace. A week hardly goes by without some innovation being announced and this is set to develop further with the much-vaunted innovations in AI. We have always maintained a watching brief on innovations.

Where a new technology has been proven, as with iPads, we have made a change in our practice. However, we remain committed to the belief that boys learn best with expert teachers, who have a deep and detailed subject knowledge, and that – up to now – the traditional curriculum approached with rigour, leads to the best outcomes.

The biggest change in the past few years has been the advent and growth of Computer Science as a separate strand of study with its own GCSE and A Level.

Computer Science involves a blend of STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Learning to apply Computer Science and STEM skills enriches pupils’ lives every day in class – and beyond – giving them immediate advantages in how to analyse data and optimise daily tasks and putting them in position for the most in-demand careers in the future. Regardless of the future career path considered by the boys, these skill sets go a long way to preparing the boys of today to become the innovators of tomorrow.

STEM Science continues to flourish following the completion of the Queen’s Schools refurbishment. The number of boys specialising in Science continues to grow and we have developed our own bespoke STEM project scheme for C Block boys. This has allowed us to facilitate a wide range of projects and a larger number of boys. We have just under 60 boys signed up for STEM projects this year ranging from investigating biodiesels and biopolymers to superconductors and building a wind tunnel. Boys have been working incredibly hard and it is fantastic to hear the shouts of triumph as they successfully complete an experiment or a computer model works for the first time. We have been thrilled with the success of the projects so far and look forward to the STEM Symposium in Michaelmas 2023 where boys will present their papers in an academic conference setting.

We have a highly active Scientific Society that meets every fortnight hosting guest speakers from across the broad spectrum of science domains.

The EtonSTEM website hosts a range of articles from boys of all Blocks and across the science disciplines. It also contains key information about the various science competitions, Olympiads, and events throughout the year, with the goal of improving the communication of STEM events within the School, such as The STEM House Challenge which saw 13 houses compete to build the best volleyball machine from simple materials.

In 2023/24, there are a variety of projects in the works including a STEM Hackathon, F Block Explains segment in EtonSTEM, a STEM newsletter and a regular F Block STEM Club led by STEM Committee members.

Entries in internal and external competitions continue to grow alongside the number of boys pursuing science-based disciplines at university, in the UK and abroad.

College Collections The College Collections are made up of exceptional holdings of art, artefacts, documents, books and natural history specimens that have been built up over the centuries by the College, Old Etonians, beaks, fellows and friends.

As such, College Collections has come to serve as both memory and microcosm of this community as it has evolved.

They also offer extraordinary material for teaching and research as new generations approach them with their questions and perspectives.

We were delighted to see the full return of in-person visits by both internal and external audiences in 2021/22 when visitor numbers not only matched but exceeded pre-pandemic levels. In addition to providing access to facilitate learning by a variety of audiences, much goes on behind the scenes.

Last year, generous gifts directly supported vital work on preserving, documenting and developing the collections.

Some of the star items in the Museum of Eton Life were conserved following delays brought about by the pandemic.

Thanks to gifts from 49 donors, flamboyant jackets, plumed velvet caps and slashed silk breeches have been returned to their former glory by treatment to support their fragile fabric. These articles of fancy dress worn in the 19th century by boys taking part in Eton’s Montem procession are now in a fit state to feature in the special exhibition Ad Montem on display until 15 October 2023. A further gift supported the treatment of four monumental working designs for the Lower Chapel tapestries commissioned a century ago as a memorial to Old Etonians who fell in the First World War.

Donors have allowed us to build the collections through acquisitions. Interventions by supporters brought into the College Archives an 18th-century manuscript, previously thought lost, by a College fellow and distinguished educationalist; and into College Library a rich and extensive archive of Sir Malcolm Arnold, one of the best-known British composers of the 20th century. In addition, nearly 30 individuals generously made gifts in kind of historic materials including documents, photographs, artworks and rare books.

Highlights include a bequest of watercolours, oil paintings and prints, including works by JMW Turner, Peter de Wint and David Cox; Thomas Gray’s extensively annotated copy of The Naturalist’s Journal and six contemporary prints by Tom Hammick (DNC 81).

One of the key priorities for College Collections is to complete the first-ever comprehensive catalogue of the items in our care. Recent gifts have sponsored specialist cataloguers to focus on projects now underway in two areas. One focuses on literary, musical and personal archives and another on the College’s wonderfully varied holdings of fine and decorative art. This work opens up the discovery of the objects here to a global audience.

They also underpin all of our other efforts in managing and in interpreting the collections for Etonians and other schoolchildren, researchers and specialists, museum and exhibition visitors, and tens of thousands of others who encounter and engage with these items online.

The Tony Little Centre For Innovation And Research in Learning (CIRL) CIRL ensures that Eton remains at the forefront of changes in education and has received international recognition for its work. We are a powerful symbol of Eton’s commitment to developing our pedagogical excellence, evidence-informed practice and research into teaching, learning and leadership in education.

We play a key strategic role in Eton’s approach to teaching and learning, working with departments to create a comprehensive Study Skills course across all five Blocks and offering Masters a range of professional development opportunities.

Research we conduct supports the work of the School in designing and processing data from surveys on race, the co-curriculum and the use of iPads in the schoolroom.

The Head of Research and Impact is working with College Collections on enhancing the use of the College’s collections in the schoolroom and the co-curriculum and with the Stephenson Centre for Wellbeing on the use of data to inform their decision-making. CIRL has also contributed to the creation of evidence-based resources for the new SPHERE (Social, Political, Health, Economic, Relationships and Environment education) curriculum.

Another vital role we have is trialling innovations, including the use of AI technologies. We create free online professional development courses on pedagogy, research and character education that are hosted on our online EtonX platform.

A new post of Head of Digital Teaching and Learning has been created to support our digital education provision and works with partnerships/schools to share best practices.

The Eton and the London Academy of Excellence (LAE) Leadership Institute is now in its fifth year and has provided a blueprint for successful year-long partnership engagement among students. LAE is running CIRL’s Academic Resilience course and we are collaborating on another project.

In 2023, students across the Thames Valley Learning Partnership (TVLP) were offered the opportunity to take a leadership course over three sessions. Several times a Half, we welcomed senior leaders and groups of pupils from state schools who discussed Eton’s approach to teaching and learning and our uses of evidence to inform practice.

The pupils also had a session on ‘leadership through self-leadership’.

The CIRL at Holyport College is complete and the two CIRLs are collaborating on professional development, gathering baseline data to assess the impact of Holyport CIRL and impact-assessing the roll-out of iPads at Holyport, which was enabled by Eton. This partnership will act as a proof of concept for a network of CIRLs that will operate between Eton, Holyport and the proposed Eton-Star Academies.

In April 2022, the decision was taken to bring our EtonX learning platform and team in-house to support our work with state-funded schools nationally, with a particular focus on our partnership plans with Star Academies.

Eton will also be strengthened by sharing resources and collaborating within departments and with external partners.

Pupils at Eton will benefit from the focus on developing and sharing best practices in teaching, as well as by having access to high-quality learning resources.

CIRL ensures that Eton remains at the forefront of changes in education and has received international recognition for its work.

Ivan’s Story I was born in London but raised in Ghana by my grandmother until I was around 9 years old. Both of my parents are Ghanaian and came to the UK for work. I went to a lovely primary school in the heart of Accra and then moved to a London primary school in Year 4.

When I was around 10 my teachers realised they had this kid who wouldn’t stop talking and thought they might as well throw that passion into the debating programme they had just started.

Our school team did well, coming in third in London our first year and then second when I moved into Year 8. I competed in public speaking competitions from the age of 9 until 12 getting to the grand finals every time.

My journey with applying for the Orwell Award began with losing an argument! I initially resisted coming to Eton because I viewed it as “unrealistic” and wasn’t included on the list of sixth forms I was considering.

But then COVID happened and there was no escaping my parents tag-teaming me about Eton until I thought I’d reluctantly apply to appease them. But once I started putting my application together,

I found myself falling in love with Eton’s Drama and Music programmes (which is what finally sold me in the end). I also decided to apply for the Michael Meredith Award for Drama and a few months after the audition, we received a letter from the School confirming I’d got the Drama scholarship alongside the Orwell Award, which was mind-blowing!

Before coming to Eton, I had enjoyed drama as an actor but not nearly at the esoteric standard that Eton Drama provided. In my first year I was approached to associate direct and conduct the Lower Boy Play and enjoyed getting to pair my love for modern opera with postmodern theatre.

I hadn’t led a production until I got to Eton and was fortunate enough to lead the cast of Equus as Dysart in the Michaelmas school play. Whilst incredibly nervous to take on a part where Dysart speaks for the majority of a two-and-a-half-hour production, the support from the crew, cast and director made what I thought was impossible an experience that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

I’ve exceeded my expectations here in every direction. One of my biggest achievements was launching a series of talks called Eton Experiences which highlighted the experiences of minority-ethnic backgrounds. We’ve also had some girls from our partner schools come in and talk about feminism as part of the Counterparts conversation programme that I was able to create with the support of the Inclusion Department. People were so eager to listen and discuss issues which were outside of their usual experience. That’s the joy of spending time at a place like this.

In my final year, I was lucky to be able to put on Eton’s first-ever Black History Month concert, from gospel choirs to string orchestras and jazz bands with the wonderful support of the music department.

I’m taking A Levels in English, History and Politics. I’ve got an offer from Cambridge to read Human Social and Political Sciences next year and have been offered a choral scholarship at my college. If you’d asked me what I wanted to do with my life a couple of years ago I’d have said acting. But my parents have stepped in again and suggested I find something more stable.

So, I’m considering diplomacy and politics.

Ignacy’s Story I was born in Poland and I was around one year old when my family moved to Stoke-on-Trent in England. My parents were looking for work.

I suppose I was a very quiet, bookish only child. I really liked computers from an early age and I was quickly drawn to maths.

I enjoyed numbers and problem-solving. I loved reading magazines about space and books on astronomy. I had academic aspirations but a private education was never really considered when I was young. It didn’t seem possible.

My decision to apply to Eton’s sixth form – for the Orwell Award – was entirely spontaneous. It only happened because a friend had heard about it and he told me he was applying. Listening to him talk about the opportunities I decided to give it a go.

I was only vaguely aware of what the School was. I applied without a real sense of what I was getting into. But this was also during the pandemic and so quite a lot about that time didn’t feel very real. But I definitely got a sense of how special Eton was. I looked at all the pictures online and the place seemed very strange and exciting. I really wanted to see what it was like.

I had academic aspirations but a private education was never really considered when I was young.

It’s such a beautiful place – my favourite part of the College is the Chapel. The most difficult thing was coming into a House where the boys in your year have already lived together for several years. They’ve already bonded. So, I was surprised by how welcoming they all were.

In my first Half I did too much of everything. I did kickboxing – which I’d never attempted before – and I was quite committed to that for a while. I tried rowing very briefly but the other boys told me they’d never seen anybody so bad at it before! It was quite funny. I went along to a few science societies too. The societies have some amazing evening speakers - the leading academics in their fields. We once had the first person to have cloned an animal come to speak to us - that was a really interesting talk.

For A Levels, I’m studying double maths, physics and music.

I’ve always loved music and the support I’ve had for that passion has definitely been the best part of being at Eton. I’ve really enjoyed playing in concerts, and now I’m an honorary Music Scholar. I started playing electric guitar in Year 3 because I was really into rock music. I took up the piano in Year 7 and started getting more into classical music so I also took up the classical guitar. During B Block I started having lessons on the lute and became involved with the English Lute Society. I formed a duet with a boy in my House and we’ve performed in various song recitals together.

It’s hard to articulate but there’s definitely a link between my passion for maths and music. In maths you need to come up with solutions to problems you don’t know how to approach and in music you’re also searching and solving.

Being at Eton has really boosted my confidence. I feel emboldened to try new things now in a way I never would have done before.

After my A Levels I’m hoping to read maths at Cambridge. I’m very interested in cryptography and I was involved in the National Science Challenge for which they released a cipher each week and you had to crack the code.

I might be quite happy to spend the rest of my life in academia.

But I’m also curious to see where the cryptography might lead me.

Perhaps into data analysis or the intelligence services.

Adam’s Story When reflecting on everything I gained from my time at Eton the word opportunity comes to the forefront of my mind. I vividly remember my first day as a Sixth Form Scholar in September 2016 and I distinctly remember being amazed at the range of opportunities available. As someone who had never played rugby before I was enamoured with the opportunity to give it a try.

What amazes me about Eton is the breadth of people that I met there and it really opened my eyes up to the broader world. In my final year I was fortunate enough to be head of the Political Society and welcome two former Prime Ministers, an opportunity that will forever remain with me as someone who grew up on a council estate in South London. Eton is however about more than just opportunity, as it also connotes community for me. Being welcomed into an environment that was distinctly different to where I’d come from is something I’ll forever be grateful for.

What amazes me about Eton is the breadth of people that I met there and it really opened my eyes up to the broader world.

Without the support of Eton I would not have been able to make it to Oxford where I am currently studying History, and in turn, I would not have had the opportunity to have been the President of the Oxford Union in 2021. Above all, I gained a greater sense of self-confidence – be that through the debating, language classes and sports teams – a sense of self-confidence that has quietened my internal self-doubt.

Andrew’s Story I am aware that I do not look or sound like most people’s idea of an Old Etonian, nor do I look or sound like an individual that would be teaching here. I embrace it, however. Hailing from Liverpool, I am lucky that I can, momentarily, represent a black, scouse identity in this arena. Being able to bring my heritage into education is an achievement that I am proud of and I know that this would not have been possible without my time as a student at Eton.

Eton has moulded me in a way that has allowed this journey to be possible. Teaching is a vocation that should be cherished.

We as teachers can give students the strength of character to verbalise and critique the environments that they preside in, which can lead to positive and lasting change in society.

I come from a working-class background. I know how education can be a way to elevate oneself, however, I didn’t have all of the

necessary tools to verbalise this when I was younger. Then, I was full of ideas and youthful exuberance. I questioned most things – sometimes to the extremes, which had a former teacher of mine admonishing me with the phrase: “Don’t be the one to stick your head above the parapet.” I desperately tried to discard this statement, but over time it revisited and irritated me.

It was important for me to be in an environment where I was allowed to critically question. This burning desire to understand and question was given fuel, oxygen and room to burn here at Eton when I joined as a scholarship student (2013-15). The intense nature of the environment created the perfect melting pot for ideas to freely flow, which lead me to believe that real change could only be enacted by stepping into the unknown and making oneself vulnerable. The question of “What do you want to be in the future?” was not offered up to me as an afterthought but posed to me as an opportunity. Eton, more than any place that I have been, allowed for the impossible to seem probable.

Whilst on the path to the impossible, you need a community to support you and Eton provided the perfect incubator for me.

I was able to play 1st XI football which became a cornerstone of my time here, along with being able to play the ever-polarising sport of Field Game, which provided me with many moments that I will never forget. The collegiate nature of Eton ensured that I didn’t just survive after making the seemingly daunting switch to come here, but it allowed me to thrive.

Now as a beak, I have a different lens to view Eton, which has been eye-opening. I know and understand first-hand how special an experience this can be. It is so important that we ensure that no student here walks alone in any part of school life that they wish to engage in.

From day one I have understood how important it is to show passion here as a beak. As an Economics beak, I believe that my passions naturally show. I hope that my students would be able to tell you that I am outward-looking and constantly searching for the answers to the problems that we face.

The work that has been carried out in ensuring that the College is a more inclusive place has been remarkable and I am proud to say that I do a lot of work within the School surrounding diversity and inclusion. This means continually sticking my head above the parapet – in exactly the way I was once advised not to do.

This School is more than the sum of its parts. It’s an incredibly special place and Eton has the power to impact society in a way that only very few institutions can.

In spite of the challenges resulting from the pandemic, you helped us to continue to create transformational learning experiences for our pupils and enabled us to share these with the wider community.

In the 2021/22 financial year, (1 September - 31 August) cash donations totalled £7.9 million (including gift aid).

We have displayed your support in our four priority areas: Financial aid: Financial aid continues to be the largest area of support. In 2021/22, your support has enabled us to provide some form of financial aid support for over 20% of our pupils, including 100 boys on full bursary. This includes all donations designated for endowed and current use financial aid funds and ensuring recipients get the extra support they need to thrive emotionally, socially and academically while at Eton.

We have revived and renewed our founding mission of providing education for pupils from many different backgrounds with a range of different initiatives including the Orwell Awards and the New Foundation Scholarships. Each of these initiatives has brought new groups of boys into the College who wouldn’t otherwise have been able to access the educational opportunities on offer at Eton.

Your support has also enabled us to progress our ambitious new schools project with Star Academies which will benefit a far wider group of potential pupils.

Teaching and learning: All donations to teaching and learning enable us to build, strengthen and share our academic excellence and resources. As you can read in the update from CIRL, Eton has established itself as one of the most innovative forces in independent education.

We continue to drive forward our expertise in digital education, conserving and sharing our collections and supporting the new schools initiative through teacher training.

Student enrichment: Our co-curriculum is a crucial part of a holistic Eton education. Donations to student enrichment help build and strengthen our co-curricular programmes and our physical environment, which has over 400 buildings to care for, 150 acres of playing fields, a rowing lake and an arboretum.

The Endowment The endowment is fundamental to the long-term future of the School, providing funds for Eton’s substantial and growing financial aid programme and increased capital expenditure on both existing and new buildings infrastructure. The Investment Committee oversees the management of the endowment in line with strategic and tactical guidelines which are reviewed regularly by the Investment Committee and its advisers, Partners Capital. The Investment Property Committee is an offshoot of the Investment Committee and oversees the

College’s investments in property only. It is advised by Clearbell Capital. The value of the endowment was £568 million at the end of August 2022 and comprised £436 million in financial assets and £132 million in directly held property. This is an increase of £293 million over the past decade, which is inclusive of the proceeds of recent debt issuances, underlying portfolio performance, outflows to fund Eton’s spending, but also very generous donations from the Eton College community.

HENRY VI SOCIETY As well as life-time gifts, many Old Etonians and friends have made a significant donation through a gift in their will to Eton.

A legacy, large or small, is a thoughtful and easy way to recognise the role Eton played in your life or the life of a family member and support future generations of Etonians.

We are very grateful to the 360 members of the Henry VI Society.

The society holds special events at Eton throughout the year which enable members, friends and family of the group to stay in touch with each other and Eton.

This was a year of leadership change in the Henry VI Society, with one Chairman retiring and another assuming the role.

Sir John Nutting Bt. KC (RJNP 59), Former Chairman Having retired as Chairman of the Henry VI Society, I owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Provost who appointed me and who was a source of inspiration and encouragement throughout my ten-year tenure.

I discovered early on that an alternative and more engaging method of encouraging OEs to leave a legacy to Eton would be to entertain selected groups to lunch in the Provost’s Lodge on the basis that a better route to encouraging OEs’ philanthropy might be through their tummies rather than a letter.

The Provost responded generously as we suspected that those, like me, whose careers at Eton had denied them the opportunity

of regular visits to the Provost’s Lodge would be intrigued, at last, to visits the precincts, while those, like him, who were never out of the place when they were schoolboys would be delighted to return.

The staff in the Lodge and Development Office, as well as William and Caroline, could not have been kinder in wining and lunching scores of Old Etonians, most of whom I’m delighted to say have subsequently joined the society.

The talks which we organised as a means of engaging with members of the society also proved a great success. Among them, David Starkey on King Henry VI, the Provost on his predecessors, Michael Crumplin on whether the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton and Andrew Roberts on George III, stand out.

The Henry VI lunches held at Queen’s Eyot and at the Dorney Lake over the years also proved enjoyable, convivial and entertaining.

There were never less than a hundred members present at any of those occasions, which only goes to show how well supported is the society by its membership.

I wish my successor, Richard Briance, the best of luck in his stewardship of the society, which I hope will be a long and fruitful one.

Richard Briance (RDFW, ORSB 71), Chairman I was surprised and delighted to have been asked to take on the Chairmanship of the Henry VI Society from the capable hands of Johnny Nutting. My interview with Johnny was a delight. I then had the enormous privilege of meeting with Earl Cadogan, President of the Henry VI Society, whose death was announced on the 11th of June. He was in tremendous form and talked with gusto about his lifelong relationship with Eton.

We owe him and Johnny a great debt of gratitude for all they have done for the College and the society.

I can report that your Henry VI Society is in rude health.

Our excellent committee has successfully swelled our ranks and presided over a most engaging programme of events which hundreds of members and friends attended.

Our aim is to continue to do more of the same. We have set ourselves the target of doubling our membership over the next year or two. If you can help us in this ambition by ensuring that your OE friends and neighbours are aware of the Henry VI Society I would be most grateful.

The society has numerous special events at Eton, the most recent of which was an outstanding lecture by Lord Roberts on George III. The Provost has generously hosted a number of lunches in the Provost’s Lodge for prospective members, a series which we very much hope he will keep up during his final year in office. We intend to add Henry VI Society events in London and around the country in due course and hope that you will be able to join us.

1440 SOCIETY (regular or annual gifts) Named in honour of our founding year, the 1440 Society honours donors who contribute regularly or annually providing the consistent and cumulative support that Eton needs to thrive. Membership in this special community begins with a donor’s first gift and continues with ongoing support each academic year.

Benefactor Donors who have donated £5,000 or more in a year are recognised as a Benefactor. Benefactors receive recognition in Eton Onwards, an invitation to the 1440 Society Reception and regular communications from Eton.

Henry VI Society members receive invitations to the annual Christmas Carol Concert and Reception, the biannual lecture and the biannual lunch.

The names of bequests received in the year are read aloud by the Provost in College Chapel during the Threepenny Day service.

Many of our donors feel it is easier to set up a regular gift as this way they are able to give proportionately more than they might with a single donation by spreading the donation across the year.

Regular gifts: Donors who make regular gifts are vital to Eton’s philanthropy, providing the College with sustained funding throughout the year and allowing us to respond quickly to new funding opportunities. Overseas giving: Eton welcomes donors from all over the world. For our supporters living in America, there is the American Friends of Eton College (AFEC) to facilitate your donation. AFEC has been determined by the United States Internal Revenue Service to be a tax-exempt public charity with 501(c)(3) status. For donors in other regions we have the ability to accept international bank transfers. Matching gifts: Your employer may operate a scheme whereby it will match gifts you make to charities. You can usually find out about these schemes from your organisation’s Human Resources department.

Some people consider Eton to be simply an out-of-date and self-centred institution. It is true that we do dress differently to most schools and use specialised Eton jargon, however, it is only when you become part of the School that you understand how far from the truth that statement is.

From Eton Action to House charity walks to community engagement, only once you have experienced the environment at Eton do you realise the extent that boys and staff go to to look outwards and to constantly explore the ways we can support the local community and charities across the country.

There are a whole host of reasons why Eton sets itself apart from other schools. First are the relationships boys can have with their beaks. At some institutions, a teacher’s role is simply to get their students through their exams. I strongly believe that in order for boys to thrive in a boarding school a teacher must go further than that. Thankfully this is the case at Eton. The ability to be able to have frank conversations with Masters on any topic at any time is absolutely vital in the creation of well-rounded boys who will contribute to our society for the better.

Furthermore, Eton has an unparalleled ability to unlock people’s passions. The number of activities you can fit into a single day is staggering. You are able to continue passions already established at previous schools, while at the same time trying new activities, some of which take place solely at Eton. Eton has taught me to never pass up an opportunity. I strongly believe that at no other school would I have been able to take part in so many areas of school life, whether it be sport, music, societies or drama. Right from the start of F Block, Eton sets out to widen boys’ talents, rather than focus boys’ skills down one particular path. This way we learn how to thrive amongst all sorts of people and not to shy away from challenges.

The reason that Eton is able to expand boys’ interests and passions is due to the outstanding array of facilities, co-curricular activities and quality of teaching that the School contains. Crucially, all of these are largely down to your unending support for the School.

The ability to be able to have frank conversations with Masters on any topic at any time is absolutely vital in the creation of well-rounded boys who will contribute to our society for the better.

Boys tend to only truly realise their gratitude for this after they leave, and so on behalf of all the boys, I thank you for your invaluable support in making Eton the best place it can be, for itself, our partners and society as a whole.
