WELCOME Welcome to our Annual Report, which highlights our school partnership activities from the academic year September 2022 to August 2023.

Eton Connect coordinates over 1,000 cross-sector partnerships between schools, charities and other organisations working together for the benefit of children and teachers. Through research, digital resources, summer schools, visits and events, Eton Connect brings together people who are determined to provide extraordinary learning opportunities for young people.

INTRODUCTION Welcome to the second Eton Connect Annual Report. After we produced this document for the first time in 2022, we had two common reactions.

The first was “Blimey! I had no idea that Eton did so much partnership work. Well done.”

The second was, “It was really interesting to read it – but can you condense it a little bit more so that I can understand the headlines?”

We have taken note of this feedback in the 2022/23 report and tried to be comprehensive, again, in telling the story of what we do, but also tried to be selective in emphasising those aspects of our programme which are most impactful and transformative.

While keeping our doors open as a welcoming and inclusive educational institution, we also have to learn to focus, and to identify the areas – whether as a catalyst, funder or progenitor of ideas – where we can really make a difference. We must invest in making those things as magnificent as they can be.

You will see some of these guiding lights highlighted in this report.

First: EtonX – We believe very strongly that the provision of expertise in the creation of digital resources, made available for free to state sector customers, is an area where we can add great value. Our partner schools are very excited by the potential here – and we will spend a lot of time in the next year working out the best ‘route to market’ for tip-top resources which fill gaps and are of genuine use.

Second: the new Eton Star schools – We were thrilled to get the nod on August 22nd 2023 that, in partnership with Star Academies, we have been granted the licence to

open all three of the new schools we bid for. Now the hard work starts, and over the next year, it’s likely to revolve around securing sites, planning permission and building design. We are at the end of the overture on this very exciting project, and need to move forward seamlessly and with intent into the first act.

Third: the Eton family of schools – With the new Eton Star schools developments, there is masses to be done as we start to build our family of schools, whether in the establishment of programmes of educational opportunity in Oldham, Middlesbrough and Dudley, in the creation of a teacher development centre (CIRL @ Holyport) at Holyport College, or in the ever-widening ambitions of the Eton-LAE Leadership Institute, we are seeing the development of common practices across Eton’s family of schools – most of which by 2030 will be in the state sector and free to attend for children.

Expect to see lots more along these lines as we move forward. It should be stated here that everything we do is enriched and made possible by dedicated staff who work very hard to make all the things in this report happen.

They are brilliant, and it is the greatest pleasure of my working life to be able to work with them to amplify Eton College’s intention to be a genuine force for good across the world of education.

HOLYPORT COLLEGE Eton College is the sole educational sponsor of Holyport College, which opened in September 2014 as the first boarding school established under the government’s free schools scheme.

Eton and Holyport work together closely within a framework which encourages innovation, as well as partnership. The relationship is managed by Italian teacher Nick Roberts (Eton College) and Politics teacher Frank Hardee (Holyport College) with support from the Eton Connect Coordinator, Eleanor Chownsmith. Both schools follow a partnership development plan which seeks to set out a process for evaluation and improvement, especially regarding its reciprocal elements. The new Centre for Innovation and Research in Learning (CIRL) at Holyport College, not to mention plans for Eton Fives courts on site, will add even more visibility to what is already an extremely successful partnership.

Through joint events and partnership activity, over 80% of Holyport students have interacted with Eton College pupils and staff.

There have been 504 Holyport attendees at Eton Society meetings over the course of 2022/23. Model United Nations, Politics, Huxley (English) and Journalism Societies have been particularly popular.

LONDON ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE, STRATFORD London Academy of Excellence (LAE) Stratford is a state sixth form for 16–19-year-olds located in Stratford in the London Borough of Newham.

LAE was founded as a collaboration between six independent schools (Brighton College, Caterham, Eton College, Forest, Highgate and University College School). Over the 2022/23 academic year, Eton sponsored LAE’s Biology Department by providing one teacher on part-time secondment and playing a significant role in its governance, providing a governor and two committee members. Throughout the year, joint activity has strengthened the relationship between students and staff at both schools.

“This was Windsor Girls’ School’s first year in TVLP and what a year it has been. We have participated in such a wide range of events from a Forensic Criminal Investigation with fake blood and bodies to a French Spelling Bee. We have enjoyed traditional sporting activities such as football as well as academic events such as a Model United Nations debate and Philosothon.

We were successful in many of the ventures, with some Year 12 students being very proud to belong to the winning Dragon’s Den pitch and even better, to see their ideas to stop knife crime reach fruition. We targeted many of the activities to our Year 12s, to help them as they prepare for university and have been excited by the confidence that participating in many of these events has given them. Our Student Leadership Team have benefitted hugely from the Leadership events and many students have had articles published in the TVLP magazine.

THAMES VALLEY LEARNING PARTNERSHIP Thames Valley Learning Partnership (TVLP) has gone from strength to strength since it was established in September 2019, under the TVLP Coordinator Clare Matheson, expanding in size from 8 to 11 schools. A wide range of cross-school events, competitions, staff networks and actions have been undertaken in this academic year, including an art competition exhibition at Wexham Park Hospital, opened by the Mayor of Slough; a Make a Change environmental event, resulting in tangible student-led improvements across two TVLP state schools; a willow sculpture workshop, resulting in dolphin and deer sculptures for Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice; and the creation of anti-knife crime badges, following a winning Dragons’ Den pitch at the TVLP Student Leadership Conference.

This year, 19 inter-school events have brought together students from all year groups and staff from all schools.

There are 11 schools in the TVLP from Windsor, Slough, Maidenhead and Eton.

“This year, St Joseph’s have loved participating in TVLP events, including the Student Leadership Conference, Model UN, Bulb Planting, French Spelling Bee, Festival of Music, Philosothon, and many more!

All of the staff that have brought the students on the trips have been amazed by the level of planning and collaboration within the partnership and all students and staff have been motivated to participate in more. A particular favourite of mine as the champion for St Joseph’s was the ‘Make an Environmental Difference’ event with guest speakers about butterfly conservation and eco-schools. Students fed back that it was great ‘seeing everyone come together and share ideas’ and that it was ‘interesting and educational’. As a result of the students becoming so enthused about protecting our environment, the TVLP supported us in gaining items such as a water butt to conserve water and apple trees to plant, so that we can make our school more environmentally friendly! We are extremely excited for the events that are to come in the next academic year and look forward to continuing to work with our partner schools.”

SLOUGH AND EAST BERKSHIRE CHURCH OF ENGLAND MULTI ACADEMY TRUST Eton’s engagement with the Slough and East Berkshire Church of England Multi Academy Trust (SEBMAT) has been established to form a group of schools which can support each other to ensure the best possible outcomes for young people in Slough and nearby areas. The Director of Local Partnerships serves as a Director of the Trust and the Deputy Head (Partnerships) as a Member.

INTOUNIVERSITY IntoUniversity provides local learning centres in disadvantaged communities, supporting young people from the least privileged families to gain a university place or achieve another chosen aspiration. IntoUniversity currently operates 39 centres and extension projects in 22 towns and cities across the UK.

“Eton College provides strategic support to IntoUniversity centres in Clacton-on-Sea, Coventry and North Liverpool and is a long-standing partner of the charity. In the 2022/23 academic year, the IntoUniversity centres in Clacton, Coventry and Liverpool supported over 4,300 students, which would not have been possible without the support of Eton College. Through the partnership, IntoUniversity students have been given many valuable and unique opportunities including:

This May, Eton pupils and staff participated in IntoUniversity’s Peterborough Pedal, a 60km cycle to raise funds for the organisation. Eton raised close to £2,000 for the charity and were the highest fundraisers out of all the participants.

The Collections ran 108 Primary Learning Sessions, for a total of 3390 students from 49 state primary schools and six education events for 184 visitors from schools and families.

COLLEGE COLLECTIONS This year, the Collections Primary Programme ran the full complement of teaching sessions which were already in place in addition to adding a new Climate Change workshop. A new Shakespeare session focussing on A Midsummer Night’s Dream was delivered to mark the national celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s First Folio, and by happy coincidence, it debuted on midsummer’s day. Outside of the Collections Primary Programme, the Education Officer visited Gerrard’s Cross Primary’s all school their creative writing day.

Secondary teaching sessions also increased this year, including a visit from students at Blessed Hugh Faringdon Catholic School who wanted to start their own school archive. The Collections team ran workshops about archives as well as collecting and displaying items.

Collections Education ran two public family learning events, one on dinosaurs, in conjunction with West Berkshire Museum, and the other on the Montem ceremony in the Verey Gallery’s temporary exhibition, Ad Montem. Also, to tie into Ad Montem, the Collections held their first post-pandemic primary CPD. The College’s Archivist used the Montem odes as a lesson in looking at primary sources, the Educational Officer led a session on literacy and creative writing and guest speaker Charlotte Hogben, Senior Fashion Technician at Middlesex University, created an art lesson all about textiles. In connection with the temporary exhibition, To Botany Bay and Back, the Collections and Science department hosted the Sir Joseph Banks A Level Study Day. Held in the Edgerton Theatre, Banks Garden, and Natural History Museum, 40 local state school pupils joined Etonians to hear talks from external speakers from Kew Gardens, Cambridge University, the University of Sheffield and the Natural History Museum.

ETON SUMMER UNIVERSITY PREPARATION COURSE The Eton Summer University Preparation Courses (ESUPC) ran for the second time during the first two weeks of July 2023. ESUPC is a series of free non-residential subject-based courses designed for Year 12 students from state schools and led by Eton teachers. The courses showed participants what it might be like to study certain subjects at degree level, with the course content extending beyond the A Level curriculum. The summer school enabled like-minded students to work and socialise together.

A total of 406 Year 12 pupils from 40 local state schools travelled to Eton College for three to five days to study one of nine available subject courses taught and curated by Eton’s teachers.

State schools were asked to nominate students who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to gain extra university application support. These students were then asked to make a direct application to the course. A team of Eton staff reviewed the applications and allocated places based on both the students’ grades and level of need.

As part of the summer school, university preparation talks were led by external speakers. These talks covered university preparation topics such as student life at university, how to write a personal statement, understanding student finance, and the support available for students at university (including mental health support).

ETON CONNECT SUMMER SCHOOL The Eton Connect Summer School (ECSS) was run for the third time in July 2023. Partnership schools were asked to nominate four students each to attend the summer school, focusing particularly on students who otherwise would be unable to attend a summer school and who might benifit from the independence and aspiration implicit in spending a week in a boarding school.

The free five-day residential summer school was based at Eton College for two cohorts of 60 Year 10 students from 30 state schools.

Created by EtonX, the summer school ran the ‘Skills for Success’ course teaching students through skills-based learning, covering topics such as public speaking, verbal communication, resilience and creative problem solving.

As well as the ‘Skills for Success’ course, the students took park in a variety of team-building activities including various sports, a ‘Fun Facts’ tour and treasure hunt, an Eton Mess-making competition, a philosophy lecture, performing in a talent show and celebrating everything they had achieved during the week at the final night’s BBQ and disco.

ETON DORNEY ROWING COURSES In July and August 2023 two non-residential Eton Dorney Rowing Courses took place at Dorney Lake, Eton College’s Rowing Centre and venue for the 2012 Olympics. The courses were non-residential and lead by experienced coaches, tailored to cater for both ‘Learn to Row’ and advanced rowers. There were a number of free places for students who attend UK state schools. The aim of such places is to give as many students as possible the opportunity to learn to row.

A total of 98 students attended the courses including 38 students who attended on free places.

All participants spend five days learning to row or developing the skills they already possessed. Participation, progression and performance were instilled into any rower taking part in the courses with the aim of providing each participant with the skills to flourish along their rowing journey.

Overall, 78% of the students who attended a free place had no previous rowing experience.

ROWING The Dorney Lake Schools Rowing programme has been running for several years introducing hundreds of young people to the sport of rowing. Sessions are offered to local schools and can range from curriculum PE lessons, GCSE PE, after-school club sessions or rewards day. Dorney Boat Club is open to any young person who wants to row but may not be attending with a school as well as being a pathway for those introduced to it through a school session or the Eton Dorney Rowing Courses

DORNEY LAKE SCHOOLS ROWING New this year has been the introduction of a rowing festival which helped give young people from local schools an opportunity to try rowing in our Cornish gigs without the risk of falling in. With a round robin of activities and prizes for the fastest team during the relay, this helped open up rowing to more participants. This year the Dorney Lake Schools Rowing programme delivered over 250 sessions and enjoyed continuing to support the active participation of Holyport College, Langley Academy, Wycombe Abbey and Upton Court Grammar in rowing.

DORNEY BOAT CLUB Dorney Boat Club continues to provide opportunities to young people. New this year has been the Adventure into Events programme broadening the participants’ horizons into umpiring and event organisation. A number volunteered at Wallingford Regatta working as part of the start team helping get crews aligned and ready to race. From this they then volunteered at Henley Women’s Regatta in Henley On Thames in June.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SWIMMING PROGRAMME In September 2022, the Eton College Primary School Swimming Programme was launched. Throughout the academic year, swimming lessons were taught to 572 swimmers from seven local state primary schools. A team of 16 swimming teachers were especially hired and the primary schools pay a nominal fee to cover the cost of the staff required to run the lessons.

Each swimmer attended a weekly 40-minute lesson over the 12-week term.

Each session has a capacity of 36 swimmers; eight swimming lessons were taught per week, with four Eton College swimming teachers running separate ability lessons each session. The programme is open to children from Years 3–5 from schools within Slough and Windsor.

ETON FIVES The Eton Fives courts and the coaching expertise of Eton’s Lead Eton Fives Coach were utilised throughout the year by Holyport College. Every student in Years 7, 8 and 9 were coached in Eton Fives over the year. A core group of Year 12 and 13 pupils have also continued to play, progressing their skills following their enjoyment of the game in earlier years. From this, now established, sports partnership, Holyport pupils are now entering the Eton Fives National Championships. In recent years, two Holyport College students reached the semi-finals in the Girls’ U14 Eton Fives competition.

Every Holyport College student in Years 7, 8 and 9 were coached in Eton Fives over the year.

Over the year, other local schools such as the Iqra Primary School in Slough have also been introduced to playing Eton Fives on the courts. After the 2023 redevelopment of Eton’s courts is completed, the aim is to engage many more local schools, playing on the courts and enjoying Eton Fives.

FACILITIES LETTING The Eton Willowbrook Centre is regularly used by local community clubs under our lettings programme. The Willowbrook Centre is home to two full-sized astros, a warm-up cage astro and 20 tennis courts. Under the Community Use Agreement held with Slough Borough Council (SBC), the facility is available for SBC community usage during the mornings and the afternoons, all free of charge.

Alongside the SBC usage, several local community clubs hire the facility in the evenings and at the weekends throughout the winter and spring terms.

The Willowbrook Centre also host a number of events for the Slough School Sports Network and often have local state schools use our sports facilities to facilitate their GCSE moderation.

Through Athens, Eton College’s swimming pool and sports hall, the College offers 10 hours of use per week to staff and residents of Eton and Eton Wick. In the School holidays Athens offers a wider range of times to the community use group. Local clubs Windsor Swimming Club, Maidenhead Marlins Swimming Club and Reading Water Polo are now well established in their use of Athens.

The sports hall is now seeing regular usage by outside organisations and Athens currently has a pickleball club and a cricket coach using the facility.

ETON COLLEGE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The Eton College Community Engagement (ECCE) programme involves pupils, mostly in Year 12, giving service to a wide range of different organisations in our local community. In 2022/23, this included eleven different schools, five charity shops, and a variety of care homes and elderly clubs, Slough Mencap, and other community organisations. Pupils also assisted with access to our museum collections and sporting facilities, such as teaching rowing at Dorney Lake. New activities established over the past year are debating workshops with Cox Green School and reading support with Year 10s from Slough & Eton CofE Business and Enterprise College. Collaboration with Environment at Eton continued with projects on biodiversity enhancement and environmental education.

Over 2022/23, 162 Eton pupils collectively gave 3760 hours of service across 11 schools, five charity shops, and a range of other organisations such as care homes, libraries, charities and cultural centres.

ETON ACTION An independent charity founded by pupils at Eton College over 50 years ago, Eton Action raises funds for five charitable causes each academic year.

The five nominated charities for 2022/23 were: • Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (a local environmental charity) • The OSCAR Foundation (a non-profit empowering children from low-income communities in India) • Slough Food Bank (providing food banks and emergency food to people in crisis) • Fulham Reach Boat Club (which gives access to rowing for those in financial hardship) • The Dusty Yak Foundation (aiding impoverished and sick children in Nepal) The Eton Action Fair was the charity’s biggest fundraising event of the year.

Held in March 2023, the fair hosted stalls from all 25 Eton boarding houses, 32 charities and 34 local businesses. Thousands of local people, Eton alumni and families attended the event, which raised £28,160. Through pupil-led fundraisers, such as sponsored runs and swim-a-thons, an additional £12,476 was raised for the five chosen charities over the year.

Through the Eton Action Fair, house-led and pupil-led activities, and school fundraisers, Eton Action raised £75,365 over 2022/23.

Of the over £75,000 raised through Eton Action: • £40,636 was raised for our five charities (Trussell Trust, Fulham Reach Boat Club, Oscar Foundation, Dusty Yak Foundation, BBOWT) • £31,662 was raised for other charities such as Unicef, Save the Children, Music and the Deaf, United World Schools, Hands Up Foundation, and the DEC. • £3,067 was raised for Slough Mencap through our annual Mufti/Casual Change Day. The Eton Action Annual General Meeting took place in June. Pupils pitched the shortlisted charities and attendees were asked to vote upon the charities Eton Action would support in 2023/24.

1 pupil Guitar Workshops: Over the winter and spring terms, Inigo (Year 11) provided guitar 1 Eton Porny student lessons to a student at Eton Porny every Monday.

80 local residents 35 pupils, Christmas Deliveries: In December, 35 Eton pupils delivered 80 Christmas parcels 10 staff members to elderly members of the Eton and Eton Wick communities. Each parcel had lots of Christmas treats and cards designed and printed by an Eton student, with messages handwritten by the pupils.

Spring Term 2023

Geography Workshop: In January, Eton pupils in the Social Impact Forum and in the Eton College Community Engagement (ECCE) programme ran a workshop for Eton Porny’s Year 3 class to learn about different kinds of rocks and how they form.

Tree Trail: In April, Year 1 students from Eton Wick First School enjoyed a tree trail around College Field and Leg of Mutton. Two pupils led this activity supervised by a member of the geography department.

Summer Term 2023 STEM Mentoring: Over the spring and summer terms, Sebastian (Year 12) organised 10–20 Holyport students for 3–4 Eton pupils to visit Holyport College every Thursday to collaborate with Holyport’s Year 12 students on delivering workshops to Year 11 students to help them prepare for their GCSEs. 156

• Fundraising This year’s Social Impact Challenge for Years 9, 10, and 11 saw 4 teams (10 pupils total) present their charitable endeavours to a panel of judges, with the ambition of establishing their chosen charity as one of Eton Action’s charities for the next academic year. The team supporting Windsor Foodshare won the prize due to the deep level of engagement they showed with the charity and local community.

The Khemka Social Impact Prize for Years 11, 12 and 13 saw 7 teams (17 pupils total) presenting their proposed solutions on local or global social issues. Two prizes were awarded to the teams that proposed the most thoroughly researched and well-thought-out plans: one which focused on assisting the NHS and the other on supporting refugees in the UK. The Birchall Citizenship Prize is awarded to those who have shown a high quality of thought and introspection through their community service and effectively communicate this in a submitted essay. This year, 17 pupils entered the prize, with a winner chosen from each year group.

Pupil-led social action projects have also been active, with pupils taking the initiative in terms of mentoring students in STEM, teaching guitar to local students, giving tours to visiting students and teachers, and creating a computer science magazine with partner school students.

Overall, 105 Eton pupils have signed up and actively volunteer through school visits and community work outside of the Eton College Community Engagement programme.

A total of 75 Eton pupils, across all year groups, took part in 15 school visits, showing students and teachers around the college, and hosting them over lunch.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION This year, Environmental Education organised several events with partner schools. These ranged from hosting a Berkshire School Eco Network (BSEN) meeting to planting 60 native trees with students from Holyport College.

Two Eton pupils spent time teaching Eton Porny students about waste and biodiversity and over 100 local students were inspired by Dr Jane Goodall’s talk for the Environment Society. Eton’s first Model Conference of the Parties (COP) was led by Baroness Natalie Bennett and a Green Careers Networking event welcomed more than 10 professionals working in sustainability to the College. Over 100 partnership students participated in the inaugural SDGs Symposium, which focused on the interconnectedness of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and social action. Students from Holyport College were invited to write for Environmental Education’s magazine, The Florentina. Eton pupils were also part of the TVLP Make a Change event, with students brainstorming ideas to take action to help combat the climate and biodiversity crises.

A total of 231 local students engaged in eight Environmental Education activities alongside 413 Eton College pupils.

CAREER EDUCATION The Career Education department helps students to understand the need to develop their employability throughout their time at school. The department creates opportunities to enable students to be better informed about the world of work. Students at schools local to Eton College are invited to participate in a wide variety of career seminars and networking events.

Overall, 329 local students attended over 36 Career Education events with 282 Eton pupils.

SOCIAL CONSULTANCY Running from January–May for Year 12 pupils (two lessons a week over two terms), the scheme trains students in essential Management Consulting skills, in order to build their ability to explore solutions to a particular business issue facing a local charitable or council organisation.

This year, three teams of Eton pupils worked with three charities: • Eton College Collections, a charity that looks after artefacts, manuscripts, rare books, archives and natural history specimens associated with Eton’s historic estate. The Eton pupil team investigated ways in which awareness of the museums could be raised in order to attract more visitors.

• The Thames Valley Partnership (TVLP), a learning partnership of 11 local schools. The Eton pupil team worked with all 11 schools to understand the awareness levels about the partnership and the work still needed to ensure that students have access to potentially life-changing opportunities.

• Windsor Foodshare, a food poverty charity. The Eton pupil team carried out essential research that the charity needed to secure the funding stream for their work.

The pupils learnt about consulting techniques before carrying out client-specific project work. Throughout the process, they engaged with representatives from the three charities. A full report with all data and analyses was compiled, and the entire course culminated in final in-person presentations to their clients to communicate the results and recommendations.

ETONX EtonX, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eton College, creates innovative online courses for teenagers to develop the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

All EtonX courses are available to the state sector for free, with revenue from paid courses (individuals, and independent/ international schools) going towards financing our partnerships programme.

ETONX Over the past academic year, EtonX unveiled a brand-new Study Skills course through a large email campaign focusing on partnership with new state schools, promoting Study Skills and all EtonX courses. EtonX also began quarterly newsletters promoting the latest EtonX developments. There has been a notable increase in uptake of EtonX courses between May-August 2023 within the state school sector, with 67 new state schools signing up.

Everton Football Academy have also begun using a free subscription for its junior members and partnerships with additional football academies are being explored.

London Academy of Excellence (564), Archbishop Holgate School in York (192) and Fullhurst Community College in Leicester (65) leading the way with most completed courses on EtonX.

ETON COLLEGE AND STAR ACADEMIES In June 2021, the College signed a partnership agreement with Star Academies, a leading state school provider, with the intent of bidding for up to three selective state sixth form colleges in the next five years. Intended to be in Dudley, Middlesbrough and Oldham, the colleges will give young people, often from deprived communities, the opportunity to go to the most academic UK universities. It will do this by blending Eton’s educational philosophy, including a rigorous and academic curriculum, with the ethos and approach of Star Academies.

Eton College’s Head of Educational Opportunity has been highly successful in establishing new partnership networks and relationships in Teesside, Oldham, and Dudley. Significant strides have been made over the past year in fostering collaborative relationships with local schools, resulting in a highly successful period of growth and engagement. This robust partnership network has been diligently built to encompass more than 50 schools across the Teesside, Oldham, and Dudley regions. These schools have introduced academic enrichment groups, offering students unique opportunities to expand their horizons and enhance their learning experiences. These initiatives have been met with enthusiasm and active participation. As part of our commitment to educational excellence, students in partner schools now have access to EtonX courses, enabling them to acquire valuable skills and knowledge. This has opened doors to new learning avenues and skill development.

Eton College is working in partnership with 100% of 11–16 schools in Oldham.
