Experience Fall’s Many Book of Colors with Tennessee Tourism’s Colorblind Viewfinders
Fall often brings sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes and the colorful splendor of autumn leaves. Tennessee Tourism realized that many with red-green color deficiency often can’t experience the full bloom of fall colors. In 2017, the state
installed EnChroma lenses engineered with spectral lens technology so that people with color blindness could participate and share the true colors of fall. Now, those wishing to experience Tennessee’s vibrant colors can find Colorblind Viewfinders at destinations such as Chickasaw State Park, Ruby Falls, I-26 Westbound Scenic Overlook and more.

As I write this, I am sitting on my porch swing on my deck overlooking the woods behind our home. This is my happy place! The leaves are beginning to change, and I know that soon the rich, vibrant colors of fall will take over the landscape.
The pre-holiday season has begun, and from now until January, so many activities will be focused on holiday events and preparations. From October’s Harvest festivals and November’s Thanksgiving family dinners to December’s Christmas gift exchanges and New Year’s celebrations, it is a very busy three months. And all our advertisers help to make your preparations less stressful by highlighting products and services that will enhance your holiday time with friends and family. This edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views is packed with helpful information, as well as product and service descriptions that can benefit you, our readers, during these holiday months. What do you need to do to get ready?
You may notice a repeated theme in this month’s issue: the beautiful colors of Fall in East Tennessee. For many, this is their favorite time of year, however brief this vibrant spectacle may be, even though it leads to a barren season which then makes us yearn for Spring. Fall is about change; shedding of the old, preparing for the new.
But most of us don’t like change. It’s hard. Many of us shy away from it, even when we know it’s for the better – in favor of staying in our comfort zone, in favor of what’s familiar.
As I sit on my swing, drinking in the beauty of nature, I am reminded that God is the creator of all, and He never changes. Maybe the beauty and splendor of fall, especially here in East Tennessee, is God reminding us that change can be beautiful if we embrace it and count our blessings. Getting out of our comfort zone can lead to new experiences and new personal growth.
So, enjoy fall. Enjoy the beautiful colors of nature and the cooler weather. And remember that change can lead to something beautiful.

Ghosts of the Oldest Blair Homes
By Bo Carey
The town of Loudon was largely settled by the Blair family, who arrived on the north side of the Tennessee River shortly after the Revolutionary War. Pioneer James Blair married Jane Carmichael and began raising a family in the area now occupied by a couple of large industrial parks. By 1799, it was known as Blair’s Ferry, and James sons operated the ferry as well as the sprawling farmlands along the river. His son Wiley was a most enterprising young man, credited with starting what became Loudon’s greatest growth period in the 1850’s. Three of the historic buildings associated with his family are reportedly inhabited by spirits who return to haunt visitors time and again. Wiley began building his beautiful country home around 1852 on land inherited from his parents. Alas, he died of cholera in August, 1854, and never had the chance to enjoy the finished estate. His descendants still occupy the house today but rented it to numerous families throughout the years. More than one of these renters have claimed to see a ghost appearing in different parts of the house. Their stories and sightings seem to match in detail.
About the same time the Cannon Calloway House was being built just south of Loudon. It was not completed until about 1870, and eventually one of Wiley’s descendants bought the home, still owning it to this day. About 50 years ago, visitors to the home began seeing a spirit appear in a couple of rooms within the beautiful southern mansion. My youngest brother was one of these overnight guests who shared space with the scary resident.
The Blair Storehouse was constructed about 1828 by the Blairs to store goods from their ferry business. Allegedly the Cherokee leader Pathkiller briefly gained control of the waterfront, the ferry and the storehouse, until he lost a lawsuit to the Blairs and relinquished all his land holdings along the river. It was a bitter and lengthy legal process, ultimately settled in the Tennessee Supreme Court. About 70 years ago, a small grocery store occupied the brick storehouse, and they began seeing a small, dark figure moving from the rear of the building to a front window, then forlornly staring out at the river. One guess is this is the ghost of Pathkiller, returning to the place of his most glorious and prosperous years before losing it all.
I had been telling this story about the mysterious return of Pathkiller on my Ghost Tour of Old Loudon, not sure if such a tale was believable. On a recent tour, a couple of middle-aged ladies began staring at each other while I was sharing the story. When I asked what was bothering them, they said they were sisters and had grown up just down the street. As little girls while playing near the storehouse, they had spotted the little man with Indian features more than once sitting in the entrance window. Cold chills ran up my body, and for that instant I felt the presence of one of Loudon’s ancient ghosts.

The term “mulligan” is a common one in our everyday vocabulary. Its most accepted origin is of a Canadian golfer named David Mulligan who, after duffing his drive off the first tee on a Montreal golf course, re-teed his ball and swung again. “Taking a mulligan” was born.
Mulligan – a second chance or do-over – is a word invoked in a wide range of human activities today. In most cases, that second chance has to be allowed or condoned (forgiven). Thus, forgiveness and second chances are related concepts – you generally need the first to get the second.
While there may be limits on forgiveness and second chances among humans, no failure is too great where God is concerned. If you confess and repent, Jesus Christ will forgive and restore you, and the Bible gives numerous examples of this.
For instance, King David, after committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging her husband Uriah’s death in battle, repented. God forgave him, his reign continued, and his link in the lineage of the Messiah was secured.
Meanwhile, the apostle Peter denied knowing Jesus three times before dawn after Jesus’ arrest the night before. Yet, he was forgiven and tapped by Jesus to lead His church.
Sadly, and unnecessarily, many of us live our lives in a winter-like state – lonely, anxious, burdened with regrets. It may be regret for actions done or left undone, comments said or left unsaid, lost or broken relationships, apprehensions about the future, lingering bitterness or negativity.
Just as Earth emerges from winter’s cold grasp to a new season of warmth, color and new life in the spring, how wonderful would it be to have a clean slate, to shift a heavy burden of negativity from the melancholy of winter to the verdant brightness of spring?
If you’ve lived your life without Jesus, ask for your mulligan today – a fresh start that is possible only because of His willing death for you on the cross. If you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, He will forgive you your sins and never hold them against you again. You can rest from the weight of sin, and from your fears, forever. If you have questions about how to do this, see the contact information below. First Baptist Church Tellico Village is ready to help! – Joe Roybal

Lives Filled with Short Sermons
By Pastor PhiL ViCkers
On a recent Sunday at Shepherd of the Lake, we welcomed guest speakers during the fellowship hour from The House That Mercy Built, a ministry with which Shepherd of the Lake has partnered for some time. This ministry provides housing and support for women recovering from substance use disorder, helping them get back on their feet. One of the young women who spoke was a graduate of the program. She shared how, just two years ago, she was in the bondage of deep addiction, but today she is working and living substance-free. It was moving to realize that through our church’s donations we are helping to support people whose lives have been turned around by God’s grace. What struck me most about her testimony was the way she spoke, just as my preaching professor once advised: she used God as the subject of active verbs. “God delivered me,” she said. That short sentence is a sermon all by itself. It acknowledges that God is real, that God is active, and that she is both a witness to and a recipient of God’s grace-filled action. In recovery, one of the important steps is to acknowledge a higher power. This is necessary because, at times, life takes us so far astray that we finally recognize we cannot fix everything on our own. We need God to open our eyes to new realities and give us the strength to do what is sometimes the hardest thing of all: to change. Our struggles may not be the same as those of the women at The House That Mercy Built, but our lives go astray, too. We fall into apathy, depression, isolation, fear, and all the other traps of this life. And we, too, need our eyes opened to what God is doing to set us free. We, too, need stories where God is the subject of active verbs: God delivered me. God set me free. God comforted me. God gave me meaning. When our lives are filled with these short sermons, they add up to a life of deep and rich faith. And it’s not because of how good we are, but because of how good God is. Thanks be to God for the witness of lives touched and transformed by grace in so many different ways.
The House that Mercy Built is located at 184 Bank Street in Tellico Plains, TN. It is a non-profit faith-based residential program that provides a safe environment for women to be transformed from the inside out. The goal is to be a place that helps women bring order and accountability where there has been chaos, lack of boundaries and instability. They provide tools and opportunities for women to become productive member of both their family and community. Volunteers are welcome in many areas, including driving and childsitting. You can contact Director Roma Payne at 423-519-7472 or housethatmercybuilt@gmail.com for more information.

Pastor Dave’s Prayer: Lord, You are to be praised for the forgiveness – “the mulligan” – You extend to us because of Jesus Christ. Please, draw people who read this short article to You so that they can know the forgiveness that only comes from knowing You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Smart Ways to Refresh Your Finances This Fall
Fall is a natural season for fresh starts. The kids are back in school, the pace picks up after summer, and we often find ourselves back in “get organized” mode. It’s also a perfect time to give your finances a quick tune-up. Here are four easy steps to make sure your money is working as hard as it should:
1. Revisit Home and Auto Insurance
When was the last time you shopped your coverage? Rates creep up quietly, and comparing quotes could save you hundreds. While you’re checking, make sure your coverage matches today’s home values and consider an umbrella policy—it’s inexpensive protection against big liabilities. Raising your deductible is another simple way to lower premiums if it fits your budget.
2. Review Life and Disability Coverage
Insurance needs change as life changes. Nearing retirement? You may not need as much coverage. Still building your career? Protecting your paycheck with disability insurance could be your most important safety net. Take a fresh look and adjust as needed.
3. Audit Your Cell Phone Plan
Cell phone bills love to creep upward. Are you paying for unlimited data you don’t use—or getting stung with overage fees every month? A quick call to your provider could save you money month after month.
4. Cancel “Set It and Forget It” Subscriptions
Streaming, apps, memberships—it’s easy to lose track of what’s hitting your credit card each month. Scan your statement for recurring charges and cancel anything you don’t use. It’s like finding hidden free money!
A quick fall refresh can uncover savings, protect your family, and simplify your finances before the busy holiday season. And the best part? The money you save can go toward something more enjoyable—whether that’s extra holiday fun or simply a bigger cushion for peace of mind. And as always if you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m happy to help.

CHIPPING
(a low running shot)
Ilove to chip. It is an easy shot, and when learned successfully can also help your understanding of the full swing.
A chipping stance has your back foot (right foot for right-handed players) pointed at the target line and your front foot angled at approximately 45 degrees towards the target with your heels almost touching. For more control, you can grip shorter on the club’s grip. The ball will be positioned in front of the right foot, and your weight can be slightly on the left foot. The hands will be towards the inside of the left thigh.
Think of the shaft as an extension of your left arm throughout the swing. There is no wrist hinge, it is an arm swing. If the shot requires a longer motion, there could be a little hip rotation, and a slight right heel lift on the thru swing. The key to good chipping is keeping your hands ahead of the clubbed at impact! Have you ever heard the terminology, “hit down on the ball”? Wonderful terminology, but I have yet to find a person who understands what it means. Here is your answer: the hands must be ahead of the clubbed at impact, and your weight should be on the left side. This concept is crucial for the full swing as well. If you need a lot of run, then you can chip with your lower lofted clubs like a 7, 8, or 9. For less run and a little more elevation, you can chip with your sand wedge. A good rule for short game, is maximum ground time and minimum air time.

East Tennessee Area Beauty:
By Kalley CooK
Being able to get closeup photos of our Tennessee wildlife is always a pleasure - as well as getting a wonderful landscape shot - but sometimes I like to back off and look at a scene as a whole and capture an animalscape.
Animalscapes don’t happen often for me, because I feel like the animal has to be positioned just right in the frame, or the lighting and environment have to be a specific way, but it’s a great feeling when I’m able to combine both landscape and animal. These scenes are special to me because they can tell more of a story by sharing the animal’s world and allows people to have more of a “sense of place” feeling. When I’m out taking photos, these animalscapes are pretty much how I’m seeing my subjects anyway, except my viewers are only getting the zoomed in version. Of course, the zoomed in versions are still enjoyable, but it’s nice to be able to share these animalscape moments since they have a special beauty of their own.
Most people could guess that this was taken up in Cades Cove because it pretty much shows a typical morning up

Complexities of Selecting the Right Paint Color
It happens all the time. There’s a
and eagerly run off to get a
your home?
There’s many different possibilities, great photogr aphy with
lig hting inside and out which can cause the most overl ooked reason - metamerism. “Metamerism, in the context of color, refers to the phenomenon where two colors a ppear to match under one lighting condition but loo k different under another.” This happens a lot with i nterior lighting when there are different color tem peratures of light bulbs and instances of clashing undertones with the paint color. This is often why when selecting colors in your closet, your outfit l ooks fine, but when you walk int o the sunlight you might notice you’re actually wearing one black sock and o ne navy sock.
Believe it or not, even the direction your room fac es, ie north, south, east, west, also affects the a mount of light and the color temperature of the nat ural sunlight coming in from outside. A north facing roo m will receive the least amount of light and is coo l leaning, whereas south facing rooms have warmer l ight. East is warm in the morning and cool in the evening , and west is cool in the morning and golden in the evening. These rooms will also experience “golden hour” at dawn and at sunset respectively. It’s also good to remember that paint colors that work great in a home in Florida might not feel the same in a home h ere in Knoxville. Got a large window in the room? What is outside it reflects into the room as well. For exam ple, A room that has a lot of natural light filtere d through trees will have a green cast to the room during the day. In addition, what is currently in the room wi ll affect how the the paint colors appear. This is the case with a warm red oak floor against a cool blue wall or having a soft aged gray floor and a warm mustard accent color. All of these examples have a large a ffect to how a new color is perceived in a room. When selecting colors for our clients, we consider all of the possibilities above. Autumn has arrived, and change is in the air. The leaves on the trees are shifting through so many spectacular hues, and the rest of nature is moving into high gear to prepare for the coming winter. As the temperature begins to fall, and dry leaves crunch beneath your feet the summer routines give way. We are all focusing on cozy living and enjoying special evenings at home in front of our fireplaces with friends and family. Autumn is our chance to assess where we are and make sure we’ve sufficiently prepared for what’s around the corner, be it snow, icy roads, long chilly nights, or for many, an encroaching loss of hearing.
Have you had difficulty hearing the wind rustle through the trees, or catching the different bird songs when you’re out on a brisk walk? Are you regularly having to turn up your tv volume higher than those around you, resulting in a battle for the tv controller?
Changes like these are the ones we don’t like to think about, but they keep coming up. And we have the temptation to ignore them, hoping inaction will make them go
Taway. Unfortunately, in the case of hearing loss, inaction all too often makes it worse.
If you haven’t yet experienced the negative changes to your life brought on by hearing loss, the odds are high you have a dear family member or close friend currently experiencing these downward shifts. There is a huge temptation for them to withdraw from friends and loved ones because it’s too much of a bother.
“When you lose your vision, you lose contact with things. When you lose your hearing, you lose contact with people.” – Helen Keller
We know change is difficult. It can be downright frustrating sometimes. We can help. Come and get either yourself or your loved one scheduled for a FREE hearing test and evaluation. It’s that easy, and a small step to start heading in a positive direction. Get to know the thoughtful, heart-felt care you will find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Call us today and take hold of a change for the better.

October In the Garden
By lisa GruGin
Have any of you been watching football? October is the gardener’s version of halftime. The game’s not over, but you’re sweaty, tired, and wondering why you planted so many tomatoes. The pumpkins are glaring at you from the porch like smug orange overlords, and your lawn looks less like a suburban oasis and more like a freshly mown hayfield. But here in East Tennessee, October is actually kind of magical. It’s the month when summer finally packs up its mosquito swarm, fall sashays in with crisp mornings, and we get one last glorious chance to dig, plant, prune, and pretend we’re in total control of our yards.
Why October is Prime Gardening Time
For those of you new to the area, we are Zone 7. Our zone stretches across parts of the Mid-Atlantic and South and sits in that sweet gardening middle ground - hot summers, relatively mild winters, and enough frost dates to keep you humble. October here is also one of the most forgiving months on the calendar. The soil is still warm, but the air has cooled, which means roots can settle in without heat stress. Bugs are slowing down, weeds are less aggressive, and you can finally work outside without sweating through your underwear. It does tend to be dry, so don’t put those hoses away or shut off the sprinklers yet! Think of October as both an ending and a beginning: a garden intermission (if you like plays better than football) with snacks, mulching, and maybe a little pumpkin spice!
What’s Still Happening in the Garden
• Late-season harvests: If you planted a fall garden back in August or early September, October is when you can pat yourself on the back. Kale, collards, lettuce, arugula, radishes, and other fall crops are happily thriving now. Some of these greens will sweeten up after the first frost, so don’t yank them out too early.
• Herbs galore: Rosemary, thyme, parsley, and sage are still going strong. If you want fresh herbs for Thanksgiving stuffing, now’s the time to snip and dry them.
• Surprise stragglers: Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants may still be hanging on if frost hasn’t arrived yet. (Our average first frost is October 28, but it can run earlier or later.) Harvest what you can, and don’t feel bad about frying green tomatoes or roasting under-ripe peppers.
The October Garden To-Do List Here’s your monthly checklist - practical, manageable, and with only a few back-breaking tasks. (You’re welcome.)
1. Plant spring-blooming bulbs. Tulips, daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths - get them in the ground before the end of November while the soil is workable. Your future self in March will thank you.
2. Divide and conquer perennials. Hostas, daylilies, and irises often get overgrown. October is a perfect time to dig, divide, and replant them.
3. Add cool-season annuals. Pansies, violas, and ornamental cabbages love the cooler weather and will carry color through winter. Bonus: Pansies look pretty and cheerful while everything else turns brown and yucky.
4. Mulch like you know how. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and perennials helps retain moisture and regulates soil temperature. Please remember to make donuts and not volcanoes! In other words, don’t pile mulch around the base of the plant.
5. Clean up vegetable beds. Remove diseased plants, spent vines, and any weeds before they re-seed. Compost what’s healthy, trash what’s not.
6. Prune lightly. Cut back dead or diseased wood from shrubs and trees, but resist the urge to go Edward Scissorhands on everything - major pruning should wait until winter dormancy. You can also cut back peonies if you haven’t yet.
7. Give you lawn some love. Overseed bare patches, aerate compacted soil, and spread fall fertilizer. October is the best time to rehab grass before it goes dormant.
8. Bring in tender plants. If you’ve been summering tropicals outside, it’s time to bring them inside. Closely check them for unwanted tenants before you do, and treat them with a systemic insecticide or a good spray of Neem oil.
9. Decorate (some of you started that weeks ago). Stack your pumpkins, put up cornstalks, and scatter some mums around. Half of the fun of gardening is making the neighbors jealous. October gardening is about balance. You’re cleaning up while planning ahead and winding down while planting new beginnings. It’s busy but not like spring. And while it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the list of chores, remember this: A garden is never truly “finished.” It’s always in motion, always evolving, always giving you something to do when you really want to kick someone. So, sip your cider or your pumpkin spice lattes, sharpen your pruners, and get the pitchfork ready. Happy fall, y’all!

Plus, it keeps the flow of laundry moving efficiently. Hidden Storage
One of the secrets to an organized laundry room is hidden storage. Enclosed cabinets above or around your washer and dryer provide a place to store laundry supplies like detergents, softeners, and stain removers—keeping them within easy reach but out of sight. This keeps the room looking tidy and clutter-free while allowing you to grab what you need without a second thought.
Comprehensive Storage
Solutions
Our designs go beyond just laundry essentials. We offer comprehensive storage solutions, including cabinets and drawers to accommodate both everyday and bulkier items. Tall cabinets are perfect for storing seasonal or larger items like extra linens, ensuring your laundry room stays neat and organized year-round.
Quick Ironing and Hanging Solutions
Touching up clothes with a quick press is made easy
with a pull-down ironing board that stows away when not in use. No more dragging out a bulky ironing board—our solutions make this process quick and simple. Need space for hanging freshly laundered clothes? We
offer versatile pull-down or stationary rods, giving you a place to hang clothes immediately after drying, which helps prevent wrinkles and keeps clothes looking fresh. For extra hanging space, pull-out valet rods can be used and tucked away when not needed.
Dirty Laundry Made Simple
Sorting dirty laundry is often a hassle, but our builtin pull-out hampers or baskets make it effortless. Keep whites, colors, and delicates separate with ease, maintaining a cleaner and more organized laundry routine. At The Tailored Closet, we design laundry rooms that work for you—efficient, stylish, and customized to your needs. Let us help transform your space into a wellorganized, attractive area.
