Recently, we at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views were introduced to CASA Monroe. They are a great organization whose vision is for every child who has been abused and neglected in Monroe County, Tennessee, to be given the opportunity to thrive in a safe and loving home. This month, we at had the opportunity to speak with Becca Dodson, the Development Director at CASA Monroe, to learn more about this wonderful organization.
MV: Tell us about CASA Monroe and what its mission is.
Becca: CASA Monroe stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Our mission is to provide trained, dedicated volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are involved in the court system. These children often face uncertain and difficult situations, and our volunteers step in to ensure their voices are heard, their needs are met, and they have the best chance at a safe, permanent home. Through advocacy, education, and support, CASA Monroe is committed to helping children in our community thrive.
MV: Can you give us some information about your Rodeo Fundraiser on September 5 and 6?
Becca: We’re thrilled to bring back the CASA Monroe Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, September 5th and 6th! It’s two nights of action-packed fun for a great cause. The rodeo will feature bull riding, bronc riding, bareback riding, barrel racing, team roping, calf roping, and breakaway roping. We’ll also have mutton bustin’ and a calf scramble for the kids. Gates open at 6:00 PM, mutton bustin’ begins at 6:30, and the main rodeo starts at 8:00 PM. It’s fun for the whole family, and every ticket sold supports our work with local children.
MV: How much are tickets and how can our readers purchase them?
Becca: Tickets are available now at www.casamonroerodeo.com and www. casamonroe.org. Pricing details and VIP packages are available on the www. casamonroe.org site as well!
MV: CASA Monroe’s rodeo in 2024 won a special award. Can you tell us about that?
Becca: Yes! We were honored to be recognized as one of the Top 5 New Rodeos of the Year by the IPRA (International Professional Rodeo Association). IPRA is the second-largest rodeo organization in the United States and Canada. That recognition means a lot to us and to our
community — and we’re aiming even higher this year!
MV: We hear that Miss Rodeo USA will be at your rodeo this year. Can you give us some details?
Becca: Absolutely! We’re thrilled to welcome Miss Rodeo USA 2025, Megan Kelly. She’ll be with us both nights of the rodeo meeting fans, taking photos, and supporting our mission. She’s a fantastic ambassador for the sport, and a wonderful role model for young fans.
MV: CASA has other resources available to families. Can you tell us about them?
Becca: While our primary role is advocacy for children in the court system, we work closely with local organizations and agencies to connect families with supportive services — whether it’s counseling, parenting classes, or community programs. Our volunteers often help identify what a child or family needs and help ensure they’re supported during a difficult time.
MV: How can people volunteer?
Becca: We’re always looking for passionate, caring individuals to join us as advocates. No legal background is required — we provide all the training you’ll need. Just visit www.casamonroe. org to learn more and start the application process.
MV: We heard that you have something new this year at the rodeo.
Becca: We’ve been keeping a secret, and we are thrilled to finally announce that
“I’m grateful to be the voice a child may need! By working closely with parents and families, and providing support as they navigate life challenges, my role is to help ensure that every child is safe and is thriving in a healthy environment.”

Service. I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. Has service stopped being a priority in our society? There used to be service stations; those went the way of the dodo bird. You call a help line and get someone in another country whom you can’t understand – only after trying to navigate the menus with an automated operator.
I do think there are some who still care about good service. Our family has been blessed by exceptional service here in East Tennessee on many occasions, but one person stood out.
We were served by an excellent young woman at a family restaurant in Lenoir City; she was fast, efficient, cheerful, and anticipated our needs all while the restaurant was extremely busy. When we thanked her for her great service and attitude, she had the best reply. She said, “Thank you! I’m so glad you were happy. You know, God put us on this earth to bless others, so that’s what I try to do when I take care of our guests.” Needless to say, we were impressed!
The next time she served us, we received the same awesome service, but she also gave us a handmade card. The card said “Thank you so much. Have a wonderful week! God Bless!” She signed it and included a scripture verse: “Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10. That’s exactly what she did, she blessed us.
She got me to thinking about service and serving others. I know a couple who use their gifts of hospitality to bless others by reaching out to people who are lonely and providing them with a “family” and a support system that has lasted decades for some. I’d never thought about this as a ministry before; just something nice. But for many in this group, they’ve been a huge blessing, and our friends definitely put 1 Peter 4:10 into action.
We all have gifts we can use to bless our neighbors and make the world a better place. I’m so grateful to know that those small businesses owners who share their stories within these pages feel the same and strive to serve and bless their communities through their gifts. I believe this is what fuels the Tennessee Volunteer Spirit!
August has some great activities that you and your family can enjoy while the weather is still pleasant. Boating, hiking, and “all things outdoor” are abundantly available. Combine the awesome outdoor activities with the beauty of our area, then add to that the amazing people who live and work here – East Tennessee can’t be beat. And while you’re enjoying that beauty and fun, smile at someone, give a kind word, bless and serve those around you – and show them you really care; you’ll make their world a better place.

“I had done my research prior to applying to be an advocate with CASA. I was applying to grad school and was looking for volunteer opportunities, but I wanted to do something that would make a lasting impact. On the surface, they advocate for children who find themselves in the court system because of abuse or neglect, but they are so much more. They have created a community that builds up people from all walks of life. Any challenges that I face, I know that I have a great group of people at CASA Monroe behind me to help guide me. I try my best to be the voice for children, putting only their best interest as my focus. I build relationships with these kids and think about them often. These kids are put in my path for a reason. I like to think that I make an impact on these children, but I know the kids are the ones that make a huge impact on me. Each child is different and beautiful in so many ways. Becoming an advocate was the best decision that I could have made, and I would make that decision 1000 times over again.”
animals! The exclusive kangaroo encounter with Baby Jack is an additional $5 which includes holding and taking your picture with the baby kangaroo!
They are awesome supporters of CASA Monroe and will be donating a portion of their proceeds to this organization!
MV: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Becca: Yes! Recently, CASA Monroe was recognized and awarded as the 2025 Organization of the Year at the Annual Awards Banquet and Auction held by the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce in May.
Also, we’d like to thank Tate’s Building Supply as our
headlining Diamond Sponsor of the rodeo for the 3rd year in a row! We’re also incredibly grateful to our community for supporting CASA Monroe and helping us make a difference in children’s lives.
The rodeo is not just a fundraiser — it’s a celebration of community, compassion, and hope. We hope to see everyone there on September 5th and 6th!

Curious minds ask what lies behind the name of Loudon’s popular gathering place known as Monkey Town. Well, it is of world changing significance and all related to one of this area’s most legendary events. Monkey Town Brewing Company came to our community after being founded in Dayton, just a short drive from here. It is so named because of the landmark Scopes Monkey Trial held in the Rhea County courthouse 100 years ago, played out between July 10th - 21st of 1925.
John Scopes was a substitute biology teacher, and he allegedly taught Darwin’s theory of evolution one day to Dayton high school students, a violation of state law. Like most small East Tennessee towns, Dayton was a solid God-fearing community with allegiance to biblical teachings and the written word. Business leader George Washington Rappleyea saw an opportunity to stage a controversial legal battle. He called a meeting at the Robinson Drug Store with civic leaders, including lawyer Sue K. Hicks, supposedly with an agreement by Scopes to accept whatever charges might come his way for the benefit of putting Dayton on the national map.
My old friend Sam Morgan told me his father was playing tennis with Scopes when the authorities arrested the teacher as the first action in the big controversy
The nationally famous legal celebrities elevated it from a misdemeanor squabble to a “trial for the ages.” Initially, Sue Hicks and his brother served as prosecutors. Sue got his name when his mother died in childbirth. When a country music songwriter encountered him years later, he wrote the hit song for Johnny Cash, “A Boy Named Sue.’ Sue preferred to be understudy to a bigger celebrity, so they brought in William Jennings Bryan, who had served as Secretary of State and ran for President three times. For the defense the famous labor and
criminal lawyer Clarence Darrow entered the fray, backed by the American Civil Liberty Union. His role was played by Spencer Tracy in the award-winning movie Inherit the Wind, depicting the trial on a Hollywood scale. H. G. Wells was asked to team up with the defense, but he was busy with projects in London.
Bryan argued the Book of Genesis and creation, with Darrow countering the theory of natural selection as defined by Darwin. It was the first trial to ever be broadcast on national public radio. The owner of the Baltimore Sun put up $500 for John Scopes’ bail, in what may have been the first example of the national media taking sides in a political controversy. To top it off, the Sun sent world famous journalist H. L. Mencken to Dayton to cover the trial. He posted daily articles using satire and derision to not only condemn Bryan’s religious leanings but also to promote Darrow’s agnostic positions. As an unflinching atheist Mencken ridiculed the local fundamentalist populace for their simple ways, labeling them “morons.” At least he accurately positioned the fight as that of fundamentalist believers versus evolutionist doubters. The conflict mirrors today’s battles between advocates of science and individualism.
On the 7th day of the trial, the 2nd floor courtroom was so hot the proceedings were moved outside on the courthouse lawn. Darrow called Bryan as an expert witness on the literal interpretation of the bible. To this day the exchange is historically acclaimed as “The Examination of Bryan.” Despite Darrow’s calculated defense, John Scopes was found guilty and assessed a $100 fine. It was overturned on appeal due to a technicality, but the big story was the media event which made it the trial for the ages.

Recently at Shepherd of the Lake, our Sunday worship focused on the parable of the Good Samaritan. “Good Samaritan” has come to mean anyone who performs an unexpected, good deed for another, but ironically the phrase would have sounded very different to Jesus’ audience. Samaritans were a group who shared a lot in common with the Jewish people, but the Jewish people suspected them of worshipping gods besides the God of the Bible.
Samaritans may have been treated with even more suspicion than Gentiles. Gentiles were at least completely ignorant of the law of God and therefore had an excuse. Samaritans had the law but treated it as one way of devotion among many and therefore treated it poorly. The phrase “Good Samaritan” then was an oxymoron. Samaritans were not thought to come in good.
And yet, in Jesus’ story, a priest and a Levite both pass by a robbed and wounded man while the Samaritan is the one who is moved with compassion, stops, and takes care of him. “Which of these three was a neighbor to the robbed man,” Jesus asks. The lawyer who had stood up to test him answers: “the one who showed him mercy.” Jesus tells him to go and do likewise.
Neighborliness had come from an unexpected place. Jesus’ parable serves at least two purposes. First, it challenges prejudice. People very different from us can be our neighbors, and neighborliness can overcome our suspicions and prejudices.
Secondly, this story gives a blueprint for action. In the dictionary neighbor is a noun, but in Jesus’ language of faith neighbor is a verb. We are called to go out and neighbor those we encounter. Jesus wants us to treat all people with the same compassion we show those who are closest to us. This isn’t always easy. Sometimes it might include sacrifice on our parts. When we do so however, we know that we are following the way of Christ. Thanks be to God for the people that God places in our lives! Every day brings us the opportunity to neighbor those who need us. The blessing we get in return is a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose. We are made in God’s image, and so when we do those things
Suffering – the state of undergoing pain, distress or hardship. It’s an inescapable part of life, though sadly some among us suffer more than others.
Suffering isn’t measurable, except in general terms (medical professionals often ask patients to rank their pain level from 1 to 10). Fact is, every afflicted person is different, and each of us has our unique threshold.
Suffering comes in two forms – physical and emotional, often experienced simultaneously as a result of each other, with the emotional often being more debilitating than the physical. Some suffering is self-induced by poor life choices that lead to tough consequences – risky behaviors, addictions, ill-fated relationships and associations. Other times, the root of our suffering comes from outside ourselves – congenital conditions, abuse, accidents, disease.
People react to suffering differently – it beats some, while others flourish despite it. But even those who overcome their situation always carry the physical and/or emotional scars. Often, the difference in outcome is an inspirational person or opportunity. Suffering can be soothed in the company or by the counsel of others who have suffered the same condition. And, the presence or influence of someone or some entity often helps sufferers look beyond their plight to see brighter days and healing ahead.
We often hear folks give glory to God for their successes, but our challenges – even extreme ones – can be even more meaningful if we learn from them and use their lessons. Does your physical or emotional pain seem too heavy to carry on your own? Consider turning to our Creator – He made us, watches over us, and can help us. In our weakness, God can be our strength. And through that strength and comfort from God, we can even help comfort others. As 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 tells us: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
The bottom line is that current suffering is insignificant compared to the glorious eternal reward that awaits those who have a relationship with Jesus Christ. God’s Word helps believers look beyond today’s challenges. Whatever we experience, God can be trusted, through Jesus, to carry us through it. Look to Him. Confide in Him. Peace both in this life and the hereafter will be your reward.

Whether it’s in the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, or closet, ShelfGenie® has Custom Pull-Out Shelves for your biggest frustrations.
You may have a particular challenge in your kitchen related to storage, organization or access. Luckily, ShelfGenie has some organizational tips and solutions to help transform these frustrations into joy.
Issue #1—Deep or Narrow pantry shelves: Deep or narrow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like categories and keeping frequently used items up front can help. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier
Issue #2—High overhead cabinets: If you have a high cabinet that is hard to reach, consider putting in vertical dividers to use this space to store flat items such as baking sheets and trays. You can reach each item at the bottom
which makes access much easier.
Issue #3—Blind corner cabinet: Some homeowners struggle with cabinets that extend back to a corner which makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50 percent and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility.
Issue #4—Tricky space under the sink: The area under the sink is hard to reach and keep organized. A ShelfGenie under-sink Glide Out with a riser shelf is custom designed to your cabinet to avoid pipes, hoses and the garbage disposal so it maximizes your usable spaceand increases access.
Issue #5—Hard-to-reach spaces: For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab pots and pans in
lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie Designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval.
Issue #6—In-the-way trashcans: Keep your trash / recycling out of sight- but always within reach- with a Glide Out trash / recycling unit installed in a lower cabinet. The unit pulls out for easy access and can be attached to the cabinet door for an elegant, functional solution.
To bring these solutions to your home and begin turning your frustration into joy, schedule a complimentary inhome consultation with a ShelfGenie Designer today. ShelfGenie® 865-270-5465 www.shelfgenie.com

Home mortgages – an area of many options and growing confusion. From reverse mortgages to programs for first-time homebuyers, credit lines, construction loans, investment loans, and refinances, it’s difficult to figure out the opportunities and pitfalls. In this environment, it helps to have a mortgage professional that can help you navigate those sometimesdangerous waters. This month, we had the opportunity to interview Michele Albohn at In Good Hands Mortgage Solutions. Michele is a Certified Mortgage Advisor experienced in retirement mortgages, conventional, VA, FHA, second home, construction, HELOC, refinance, and others. In addition, she even lives in Tellico Village!
MV: Tell us a little about yourself and In Good Hands Mortgage Solutions.
Michele: I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Family
is at the heart of everything I do—I’m blessed with two daughters and a supportive wife, Alissa, whose encouragement always inspires me. A while ago, I worked for a prominent elder-law attorney to run her Medicaid department where I helped clients navigate estates, trusts, and wills. I noticed how complex—and at times impersonal—the long-term-care system could be. In 2014, I founded In Good Hands Medicaid Consulting. Since then, I have guided thousands of families through intricate Medicaid plans, asset protection, nursing-home transitions, and home-care coordination.
MV: How did you get started in the mortgage business?
Michele: As with many others, when COVID hit, I had to reevaluate my future. With a strong background in eldercare—spanning Medicaid planning, estate law, and nursing home admissions—I knew my heart was still in serving people through life transitions. I also loved real estate, and becoming a mortgage broker felt like the perfect fit
MV: What do you like best about what you do?
Michele: The chance to be a trusted partner in some of life’s most meaningful moments. Helping families untangle complex financial and care-planning questions, then watching the weight lift from their shoulders is incredibly rewarding.
I also thrive on problem-solving. No two situations are alike, and I get genuine satisfaction from crafting customized strategies, whether that’s designing a reverse-mortgage solution that lets someone stay in the home they love or coordinating a seamless transition into long-term care without jeopardizing hard-earned assets. Seeing clients relax, confident that we’ve covered every detail, reminds me why I chose this path. Finally, I enjoy the relationships with my clients.
What is your goal in working with clients?
My primary goal is to give them confidence and peace of mind every step of the way. From our first conversation, I listen to what matters most—whether that’s protecting your hard-earned assets, preserving the lifestyle you love, or making sure you buy your new home while preserving assets.
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
With access to over 200 lenders and a certification in reverse mortgage, I offer customized options that many other lenders simply do not. I am also licensed in
I aim to simplify what can feel like an overwhelming process, breaking down each option into clear, jargon-free steps so you can make informed decisions. Whether we’re structuring a reverse mortgage to unlock your home equity or coordinating the purchase of your new home, I’m here to guide you with honesty, empathy, and expertise—so you can focus on enjoying the next chapter of your life, knowing everything is truly In Good Hands.

Scammers are getting more sophisticated—and unfortunately, retirees and pre-retirees are often in their sights. In 2024, Americans aged 60 and older lost an estimated $4.8 billion to scams and fraud, according to the FBI. If you’ve ever thought, “That would never fool me,” some of today’s newest tricks might surprise you. Here are two scams making headlines right now, and how to protect yourself.
1. AI Voice Cloning
By yVonne
Imagine getting a phone call from your grandson. He’s in trouble—he’s crying, scared, and says he needs money wired immediately. But here’s the catch: it’s not him. With just a short clip from social media or voicemail, scammers can now use artificial intelligence to clone a loved one’s voice. These calls sound eerily real and are designed to make you act before you think. How to protect yourself: Always pause and verify. Hang up and call your family member directly. Even better, create a family “safe word” to confirm their identity in emergencies. And review your social media privacy settings—voice clips and videos are now more valuable to scammers than ever.
2. Phishing Texts, Emails & Gift Card Scams
You get a text or an email that looks like it’s from Amazon, the IRS, or your bank.
means to secure your account.
How to protect yourself: No legitimate company or government agency will ever ask for payment in gift cards or by wire or bitcoin. Never click on links from unfamiliar texts or emails. Instead, go directly to the company’s official site or call their verified phone number. These scams rely on urgency, fear, and isolation. So, take your time and talk to someone you trust before acting.
At Marsh Wealth Management, we’re not just here to help you grow your wealth - we’re here to help protect it, too. If you ever receive a suspicious call, text, or email, don’t hesitate to reach out. A quick second opinion could save you a lot of stress—and money.

hen I started this journey, my dream was simple: create a space where women of all ages could find clothing that made them feel confident, beautiful, and completely themselves. Decades later, that mission has only grown stronger! It brings me so much joy to see moms, daughters, and grandmothers walk through our doors together… and even better, walk out with something each of them truly loves.
At The Lily Pad, we believe fashion shouldn’t be limited by age. Whether you’re 13 or 103, we’re here to help you find pieces that fit your personality and lifestyle. That’s why my store manager and granddaughter, Ivy, and I do all of the buying together. She brings such a fresh perspective, especially when it comes to younger shoppers, and together we strike a balance that keeps our racks full of timeless pieces, fun trends, and everything in between.
This fall, we’re especially excited about the trends that are bridging the generations. Matching sets, straight and wide-leg jeans, short sweaters, and stylish sneakers are just a few of the styles that are flying off the shelves.
It’s so fun to see a grandmother and granddaughter both try on the same pair of pants and love them for completely different reasons! That’s the magic we strive for… finding pieces that feel uniquely “you,” no matter your age.

GRIP
In golf, although boring, you must nail down your basics. Number 1 is the grip.
The grip is so important because your starting grip controls the club face. Sorry to burst your bubble but hitting a golf ball is not a hand/ eye coordinated motion.
The leading hand (left hand for right-handed players) needs to have the grip close to the lifeline of your hand.
The heel pad is ON TOP OF THE GRIP. If the club is palmed, then the wrists won’t hinge, and the elbows will hinge instead. The leading thumb (left for right-handed players) will be slightly on the left side of the club and the right hand (for right-handed players) will cover the left thumb. Grip pressure is also a necessity to maximize your clubbed speed. If all your fingers are clenched on the club, you have eliminated the ability for your wrists to freely hinge. The last 3 fingers of the leading hand (left for right- handed players) can be firm but keep the thumb and index finger relaxed and the trailing hand as a support.
Remember, the purpose of the hands is not to control the face of the club but only to hold the club. Do not control your swing with your hands but swing your arms instead.

I know some photographers that feel it’s not worth going out on foggy mornings, but some of my best landscape photos have had some fog in them. In these summer months, there’s also something about the contrast of the green of trees and grass that just “plays” well with the fog. It’s so peaceful to me standing in a field and watching fog move around you with the warm sunlight trying to break through, especially in

The most common causes of hearing loss are exposure to loud noises and natural age-related degeneration, both of which affect the inner hair cells of the ear. Everyone will develop some degree of hearing loss during their life.
Studies can’t explain why hearing aid use is linked with reduced deaths – it may be because hearing aids help mitigate risk for other conditions such as depression, dementia, and social isolation.
It’s interesting how hearing loss impacts a lot of health outcomes. Regular hearing aid users tend to belong to a higher socio-economic class and have fewer medical conditions. A research team from the National Health and Examination Survey studied 10,000 adults. Out of the 1,700 adults with hearing loss, only 13% used hearing aids regularly. After 10 years, compared to people who had irregularly or never used hearing aids, 24% fewer of the regular hearing aid users had died. That was the case even when taking into
account things like income, medical history, and other demographic differences. According to Dr. Doug Backous, president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, “It’s probably the most under-screened symptom in a primary care office.” Primary care physicians may not be recommending a hearing specialist to patients as often as needed. On top of that, there remains a great deal of stigma around the use of hearing aids. Many people with hearing loss and communication difficulties are not willing to try hearing aids. They say, “I don’t think I’m there yet” or “I don’t want to look old.” However, in reality, it’s very hard to see the new hearing aids. With the U.S. population aging and more younger Americans turning to hearing aids, the research may contribute to the data that hearing aids are a protective medical treatment against worsening disease or death.

Welcome to the “Dog Days” of summer! The forecast for the next several weeks will be hazy, hot, and humid with the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. If you need rain, it will go elsewhere. If you don’t need it, the cloud will stall out over your house. Some of your plants will have given up the ghost for no discernible reason. Others will be devoured by insects and various critters or destroyed by fungus.
Welcome to summer in the South. There are things you can do to mitigate the damage, so here’s your list:
» Keep an eye on moisture levels.
Mother Nature has been very fickle with the rainfall. I can watch the radar and see this lovely band of rain headed our way - only to watch it fall apart just before it arrives. On the other hand, there can be nothing in the forecast, and you spend two hours watering - only to have a deluge. Mother Nature is not always kind.
As I have told you probably 100 times, sprinklers are for grass and flowers, not trees and shrubs. They simply cannot deliver an adequate amount of water. Trees and shrubs that have been planted in the last three years are especially vulnerable and will need hand watering any week that receives less than 1” of rainfall. Drip irrigation and tree bags will help but should be monitored weekly.
» While you’re watering, do your monthly checkup. Look up, down, and all around. Check tree canopies for broken, damaged, or stressed branches. Look down for mole tunnels or vole holes. Look all around at plants to check for problems. You can’t fix a problem if you don’t know you have a problem.
» I don’t know when I have ever seen more insects and diseases. The mild winter didn’t kill the bugs off, and the damp spring worked like an incubation chamber. Start treating with the least toxic products first, such as insecticidal soaps and horticultural oil. Some susceptible plants may require systemic products. If you’re dealing with fungus, you’ll need to be vigilant. Powdery mildew, rust, shothole disease, and black spot seems to be on everything this year. Root rot fungus is also prevalent. Good hygiene is critical, so keep those fallen leaves off the ground. If you suspect a root fungus and want to replant, talk to us before you replace it. You may need to try another species of plant.
» Did you plant vegetables? How are they doing? Some of you have veggies coming out your eyeballs, and some of you have had a host of problems. Here are the main issues I’m seeing:
1. Sporadic watering does more harm than good, causing tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons to split. Overhead sprinklers set the stage for fungal diseases. Regular drip irrigation or hand-watering at the base of the plant is best. A layer of mulch will keep soil and moisture levels more stable.
2. So many creatures, from tiny insects to big bucks, want your plants! Physical barriers and preventive planting will help, but you may need to use insecticidal soaps or bT.
3. You need to monitor your garden daily. It’s astonishing how fast those cute little squash will turn into baseball bats or the perfect tomato will become a bird water source.
» Keep fertilizing annuals and container plants to keep them looking nice. Cut back scraggly plants or pull them out and replace them with fresh ones.
» August is not the time to prune. Most of your plants are already stressed, and pruning is super stressful for them. You should keep deadheading, however, to keep your blooms going on annuals and some perennials.
» Keep weeding, and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent such as Preen every three months to keep weeds at bay.
» Keep birdbaths and birdfeeders clean and filled as our feathered friends prepare for fall migration.
Now comes the hardest thing I have ever had to write. All good things must end, and Meadow View is one of them. After almost 30 years, we have made the difficult decision to sell. Pope’s Garden Center will be taking over on September 1st, and we wish them well. Between now and then, we are going to have some sales! Starting August 1st everything (except bulk goods) will be 50% off. On August 15th, anything left will be 75% off. We would all like to give a tremendous thank you to our loyal customers. You guys are the best, and we will miss you. Live long and prosper.

Thinking of Remodelling? Here’s How We Can Help!
You love your home, well parts of it anyway. Maybe the location is great, your view, your neighbors, b ut the kitchen is in desperate need of an upgrade, and the flooring you’ve been sick of since you moved in; th e list can be overwhelming! Luckily both of those a re fixable. Remodeling is a great way to invest in your home and update it with new features you’ll love in a fresh color palette, but where to start? After l iving in a home for years, it can be hard to envisi on what the possibilities are, much less how to make the change s happen while living there, but that’s where we co me in! Here’s the advantage of hiring a professiona l interior designer to assist you with your home remo del.
Vision - Perhaps the solution is adding another door to a wall, widening a window, or removing a closet entir ely. Sometimes the answer is to reshape the space of the room you are remodeling. Other times i t’s more the colors and finishes that will yield th e biggest impact. Either way, our team can provide you with designs and visual renders based on function a nd design principles that will give you the confide nce to move forward with your project.
Product Knowledge - Another benefit we provide is expertise and product knowledge. There’ s so many options out there, often times more than you might realize. For one example: countertops. There’s so m any more options on the market today beyond laminat e, quartz, and granite! Quartzite is a favorite for it’s natural stone character and the inherit lumino sity many of the pieces have. There’s also high qua lity stained porcelain pieces that can mimic the lo ok of delicate marble and granite for a fraction of the c ost per sqft and without the maintenance and care r equirements, and except under extremely close inspection, you’d never guess.
Guide - As designers we listen to what you want to accomp lish and can help you achieve those goals. We help design your vision and give actionable steps to achieve it. We can assist you with timelines by pro viding curated options for each step of the process that can align with your budget, style, and needs which will avoid costly change orders and revisions in th e process.
An Outside Perspective - Sometimes the solution that initially seems best , might not be the best solution to achieve your go als. It might even be exceptionally costly, and not worth the investment to make that change happen. Professionals such as o ur team, have fresh eyes and industry experience which gives us the ability to see your home in a di fferent light. We can provide solutions that you mi ght not have considered, or can give you the same e ffect in a more cost effective way. As an example, a clie nt recently wanted to increase her view of the lake while washing dishes by getting a larger window, b ut adding a new sliding door, she has a whole window w all so she can see the lake in her whole kitchen, i nstead of just at the sink. While we leave the actual demolition and installati on to a reliable network of professionals, we can h elp bring all the pieces together and collaborate a s a team, so you can be on your way to a home you love even m ore. Ready to get started? So are we! Reach out to us to have your discovery call and learn more about the possibilities for your home today!

The Tellico Village Volunteer Fire Department (TVVFD) is proud to announce that Fire Chief Jerald “Jerry” M. Dougherty Sr. has been honored as the 2025 Tennessee State Firefighter of the Year by the American Legion. The award was presented on June 14 at the Legion’s annual convention in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to recognize his exceptional and lifelong dedication to fire service and his courageous leadership and community engagement in his current role at Tellico Village.
“We are honored and grateful to have such a servant leader at the helm,” said Wayne Tinder, TVVFD chairman.
