When I was growing up, I so looked forward to Fourth of July activities. My family would often join our church family for times of celebration. The July 4th celebration was always a highlight at the local park with picnics, games and contests, later topping off the day with drawing “pictures” in the air with sparklers, and of course, a fantastic fireworks display over the lake in the middle of the park.
I still look forward to July 4th celebrations, but for different reasons. Oh, I still enjoy fireworks, but what means the most is what our country has always stood for and the freedoms we hold dear. We feel so blessed to live in East Tennessee where we are surrounded by so many who share our love for America and the ideals our founding fathers set to paper in the Declaration of Independence.
Think about these words from the Declaration. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
I remember having a discussion with our then 16-year-old son one day at breakfast; he said “The Declaration of Independence says we have the right to PURSUE happiness - not the right TO happiness. It is our responsibility to go after it - not have the government give it to us.” That is the heart of the entrepreneurial spirit!
We are big supporters of the small business community. Anyone who truly embraces entrepreneurship has experienced the emotional roller coaster of managing and growing a company; those ups and downs can be dizzying in today’s ever-changing economic environment. Now that I have your attention with this crazy title, welcome back to the Our PLACE monthly update! We are already making plans for our annual Walk 2 Remember & Car Show at Lenoir City Park on October 4th, from 9:30-12:30. Please mark it on your calendar. More information will be available next month, but in the meantime, please discuss with your friends and neighbors the possibility of forming teams to walk that day.
This month, our focus is on another aspect of the program at Our PLACE, which involves animal therapy. Several times a month, volunteers or organizations bring animals to the site for our participants to interact with and learn. The benefits for those individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia, as well as seniors in general, of engaging with animals are many. They can express their emotions as they interact with the animal in a meaningful way. Individuals derive a sense of comfort and security through tactile and sensory experiences, and engage in positive social behaviors such as smiling, laughing, and maintaining eye contact. Many people remember thea pets they have owned, which stimulates both long-term and short-term memories. Animals can help to counteract social withdrawal, apathy, and restlessness.
So, who comes to see us? Shangri La Therapeutic Academy of Riding (STAR) in Lenoir City has visited with mini horses, and Creature Features from Athens has brought a variety of critters, to name a few: hedgehog, wallaby, porcupine, mountain coati (I had to look that up!), and parrot.
Several times a month, different volunteers bring their dogs to visit and interact with our participants. One volunteer who comes every week is Lisa, who brings Lily, a Lab mix, to see her friends at Our PLACE. Lily is a trained therapy dog who started as a therapy dog at age 3; she is now 7. To earn her certification, Lily had to undergo approximately nine months of training, starting with basic obedience training and progressing through four levels to advanced training. After that Lily had to pass the AKC Good Citizen Test, which consists of ten qualifications: accepting a friendly stranger; sitting politely for petting; appearance and grooming; walking on a loose lead; walking through a crowd; sit and down on cue and stay in place; come when called; react to another dog; reaction to distraction; and supervised separation. Lily is one smart canine!

Since the Loudon Courthouse burned in 2019, an ugly chain length fence surrounded the courtyard for almost six years. Finally, the renovations were completed in spring, allowing public events to be held once again on the grounds. May’s Memorial Day service was led by mostly Republican elected officials honoring soldiers who sacrificed while serving their country. Then on June 14th a group of protesters with mostly different views stood in the same courtyard for the “No Kings” movement. Both events were enacted peacefully by Loudon Countians displaying their constitutional rights to voice their opinions, and I was glad to see an abundance of American flags waving each day.
With Independence Day this week, it all takes me back to the patriotic images of my childhood at the Loudon Courthouse 4th of July celebration. Of course, it always started with the big parade, where antique cars, floats, politicians and the high school band lined up to entertain the crowds along Mulberry Street. They were always joined by a brigade of kids on bikes festooned with red, white and blue crepe paper. The Lions Club usually rode in the back of a truck and on every block would give out a huge lion’s roar to the delight of onlookers. The parade was always led by the honor guard of the American Legion with rifles hoisted on their shoulders. My memory recalls a few pot-bellied aging soldiers gasping for air after the first mile of marching. The parade planners always saved the horde of equestrians for the very end ... for a very strategic reason. Vast amounts of horse manure were always deposited on the street, so by being the last to parade, other participants didn’t have to “step in it.”
It was small town Americana at its best! We had unique entries which New York and Chicago parades could never match. My favorite involved the antics of Garland Lindsey, a real character who came in from Piney to share his flair for rural comedy. One year Garland dressed up in a bonnet and long dress, marching along to the howls of the crowd, long before cross dressing took on a different meaning. I remember him positioning an outhouse on the bed of a truck, and every time the truck jolted forward, he’d stick his head out the door, yelling something like “Slow down, I’m busy in here.” Then there was the time Garland had a hunting dog enclosed in a cage, with a live raccoon walking along in front on a leash. He was big on posing opposite roles, to say the least.
As the procession concluded downtown, parents picked up kids and bikes, horse trailers loaded the tired animals, and the various politicians and floats cruised off to the next parade in Lenoir City or Greenback. Most roadside viewers made a beeline for the courthouse yard, where the real fun was about to begin. There a bluegrass band would already be playing on a flatbed platform. Usually it was the Evans Brothers - Sam, Jess and Dock - from Paint Rock. Other years it could be the Piney Pickers, and I almost forgot about Rooster Knox, who wailed out a squawling rendition of “Kawl-iga the Wooden Indian.” All sorts of food and drink booths would be set up in the courtyard, as the festive mood mounted throughout the day.
I remember the greasy pig contest where a pig was greased up, and any kids who could
catch it and hold on would win a prize. The bigger drama was climbing the greasy pole, which seemed to be 50 feet high to a small boy. It was what looked to be a medium size tree with all the bark trimmed off and the entire length slathered with lard and grease. A $10 bill was stuck on top of the pole, and then the boys would start taking turns to climb up and claim the money. Climber after climber would fail but soak their jeans and tee shirts while sliding back down. This made the pole a bit easier for the next contestants. Eventually 3 or 4 teenagers would stack themselves on each other’s shoulders, allowing the smallest lad on top to reach the big prize, ending the madness.
Those were the days. People loved the 4th of July as a way to celebrate patriotism.
I don’t remember people getting mad at each other over political differences. A lot has changed since those memorable Independence Days of the 50’s and 60’s. The courthouse fun has been replaced by a huge Fireworks Show out at Municipal Park. The one constant is the parade, still ambling along the same route on Highway 11. You should come out and find a place along the road between Loudon High School and the courthouse downtown, starting at 10 am. A lot of things will not have changed since 1959. Some kid will be on a bike with training wheels, adorned in red, white and blue. And the tail end of the parade will be dominated by horses and mules from area farms, leaving their distinct markings along the way.

Way back when I was a girl, our Lutheran Church in New Jersey always started the fall Sunday school with a Rally Day! Ours was not the only church that held a Rally Day each year. Other churches in town did also. It was a time to get back to a regular church schedule after a long summer vacation. I looked forward to it each year as it was a great time - a party atmosphere with fun and games and, as is always the case with a church event, food!
This year, Shepherd of the Lake is aiming to bring back Rally Day! Coinciding with the start of the new school year, it will be a time to say goodbye to another summer, mark the beginning of new church activities and usher in the fall season. We are inviting our neighbors to join us for a good old car cruise-in with free food and entertainment!

If you’re reading this, you’ve been given another day of life. Do you consider that a good thing? In reality, all of us greet many days with dread due to emotional turmoil, family issues, health and financial challenges, etc.
A long life is a gift to be celebrated, but it’s a mix of blessings and challenges. In a long life, we experience childhood security, the wonder of new experiences, physical and emotional growth, the joys of love and family, and the thrill and fortune of success. Along with these, however, comes a grab bag of heartache – disappointments, broken relationships, loss of loved ones, victimization, financial setbacks, loneliness, and disease or injury.
Psalm 90, verse 10, penned by the prophet Moses, hits on this theme: “The years of our life are 70, or even by reason of strength 80; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.”
Moses knew earthly lives are short, so our focus should be long term (eternity); Moses also knew difficulty. With God’s inspiration and direction, he overcame an Egyptian regime that had enslaved his people for centuries. Once released from bondage, those same people wandered 40 years in the desert, often rebelling against Moses and God as they made their way to the Promised Land.
Do you think that Moses’ words in Psalm 90:10 capture what we all might feel as we reflect on many of our life experiences? It seems we experience toil and trouble every step of the way. How can we deal with this reality?
Some numb the pain with drugs or alcohol; others distract themselves with lifestyle and possessions. Moses, however, turned his eyes upward and cried to the Lord, continuing in Verses 12 and 14: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom ... Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.”
Moses lived in the light of a bigger picture. He believed that the incredibly good God he knew would one day return to restore order and blessing to His creation, which has felt deeply the effects of evil.

This article is the fourth in a series about people who were affected by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, and how local Tennesseans are responding to meet their needs. Today we introduce Elizabeth (Beth) Angel, a USAF Veteran. Beth is a mother of three adult children who were living in Asheville, NC at the time of Hurricane Helene. Here is Beth’s story.
Prior to Hurricane Helene, Beth and her family were living in a 4-unit apartment complex in Asheville, NC. The apartments were built on stilts and were not predicted to be in the pathway of flooding. But all that changed in an instant when the dam in Asheville broke. Within minutes, the water flowed into Beth’s neighborhood, rapidly rising from ankle to neck deep.
road was higher, a local pastor, along with Beth’s relatives, tied themselves to trees to pull each other in (like ants on a stick). At that moment Beth said to herself, “God’s people saved us!” Beth and her family watched dazedly as their own vehicles were swept down the river. They were shocked as their entire apartment building was uprooted and swept off from the force of the rushing waters. They witnessed neighbors getting swept away, some to be saved downstream, others floating face down. One man near a tree was washed away, sucking him under, uncertain what happened to him.
The heroic pastor opened his church to offer shelter and comfort. Beth felt that her farm girl upbringing and military training made the actual evacuation feel like second nature. Her faith declared, “Surely, We Will Not Die!” And her internal ‘Mama Bear’ fought fiercely for their survival, yet her mother’s heart was horrified. And today, the image of Beth’s grandson clinging to his mama’s head, astride her shoulders in the rushing waters, still haunts Beth.
The trauma of survival mixed with disbelief at the loss of their entire livelihood left a lingering unease that could not be easily shaken. Beth’s family lost everything they owned. In next month’s article we’ll update you on what’s happened in Beth’s life since this tragedy occurred. And a little teaser – she’s moved to Knoxville!
The Tents-To-Camper’s project continues to serve people affected by this tragedy, like Beth Angel. To date, team members have delivered 43 campers and donated many hours and supplies to meet a large range of needs. Could you help?
Quickly, Beth and her daughter, her infant grandson, and three dogs began an uncertain journey through waters that had swelled to 30 feet deep. With Beth’s grandson on his mother’s head and shoulders, they watched cars get flushed away as they struggled to swim against the powerful currents. Beth said that the wall of water coming towards them looked like a horror movie. A couple of times they almost drowned. As the six of them struggled to cross to the other side of the flooding where the

Congress loves using tax incentives to nudge us toward certain financial behaviors. Want to encourage home ownership? Allow mortgage interest to be deductible and exclude up to $500,000 of gain when the home is eventually sold—what a gift! Want to support charitable giving? Offer a deduction for donations.
Perhaps the biggest incentive of all is the tax break we get for saving into a 401(k). And it’s a generous one—up to $23,500 for 2025 (or $31,000 if you’re age 50 or older).
Since saving for retirement is essential, that tax deduction feels like a no-brainer. But what often gets overlooked is the “catch” that comes later in retirement—and it’s a big one.
The trade-off for today’s tax break is that you’ve agreed to share your 401(k) with the IRS down the road. As your account grows, so does your embedded tax liability. At a 25% tax rate, a $200,000 account means only $150,000 is truly yours—$50,000 goes to the IRS when you take withdrawals. If the account grows to $1 million, the IRS’s slice grows to $250,000. And it doesn’t go away—your
heirs will owe the tax if you don’t. Here’s the real kicker: it’s Congress that decides how much of your account they’ll keep by way of future tax rates. It’s a moving target beyond your control. In accepting today’s tax deduction, you’re giving them permission to claim a larger piece of your pie later—if tax rates rise. And given the growing national debt and the strain on programs like Social Security and Medicare, higher tax rates seem more likely than not. So, what’s the smart move?
Think long-term. Consider skipping the tax deduction today in favor of building tax-free savings through a Roth 401(k) or Roth IRA. You’ll own 100% of your account—forever. And you’ll be shielded from future tax hikes. If you already have a sizable pre-tax 401(k), look into Roth conversions as a strategy to gradually reduce the IRS’s future cut. Taking control of your tax picture now can give you lasting confidence in retirement.

love photographing and observing killdeer, but sometimes they make me a nervous wreck because of the locations they choose to raise their young. Some of us have probably witnessed these birds all over parking lots or driveways because these locations mimic natural environments such as pastures, fields, or riverbanks. They also like rocky areas because their eggs mimic rocks and blend in better. Since killdeer nest on the ground, they also need a location that is very open because this helps them see a predator coming from far away and helps them find food sources.
Killdeers have an impressive way to divert a predator from their young or nesting site: the “broken wing” display. This display is done by one of the adults who will fall on the ground with a wing up in the air and act like it’s actually broken. Then when a predator walks towards it, the killdeer will then jump up and fly in the opposite direction of its young where it will repeat the display again, diverting the predator further and further away. Sometimes killdeer need our help to better protect them, especially if they have decided to nest in a heavily traveled area, so I encourage placing cones or signs around the nest which will keep them safe from cars. There’s also no need to worry about them abandoning the nest as I have never witnessed them doing so.

e are officially past the halfway point of the year, and it is time for a checkup. Head out into that yard and look up, down, and all around for signs of trouble. Check trees for broken or dead branches, woodpecker holes, and peeling bark. Do trees or shrubs have signs of a fungal infection or insect infestation? How are perennials and annuals doing? How about veggies? If you have questions, give us a call or stop by. I know that some plants are really happy with the cooler, wetter weather and some are not, so let us help with the unhappy ones!
Here are some tips for keeping your yard pretty through the summer.
Water Wisely
Nature has given us rain in abundance this spring, but we never know when the spigot will turn off. As temperatures climb, so does a plant’s need for consistent moisture. Early morning is the best time to water, allowing the moisture to reach roots before the sun evaporates it. Deep watering - where moisture penetrates several inches into the soilencourages deeper root growth and makes plants more drought-tolerant. Sprinklers are designed for annuals and grass and do not provide enough water for trees and shrubs. Overhead watering also contributes to fungal infections, so consider drip systems or hand watering for sensitive or demanding plants.
Mulch is your water saving friend. Applying a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Harvest and Replant
July is harvest time for many crops - think tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, squash, and peppers. Frequent harvesting encourages continued production. You can also plant or replant warm season vegetables for a later harvest.
This month is also a great time to start planning and planting for a fall harvest. In our zone, cool season crops like carrots, beets, kale, broccoli, and lettuce can be started in late July or August. Use a shade cloth or light mulch to protect emerging seedlings from intense sun and heat.
Prune and Deadhead
Pruning and deadheading your flowers helps extend their bloom cycle. For flowering annuals like petunias, zinnias, and marigolds, remove spent blooms to encourage more flowers. Perennials that have finished blooming or those that have gotten leggy can be cut back to encourage new growth.
Spring blooming shrubs can be trimmed as well. Pruning is an art and a science, so please don’t start chopping without educating yourself. Stop by if you don’t know how, what, or when to prune.
Control Pests and Disease
Pests can be particularly active in July, especially aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Japanese beetles, lace bugs, and Crape Myrtle Bark Scale are also showing up all around us. It is best to monitor your garden regularly, checking the undersides of leaves and the stems. Neem oil and insecticidal soap can help manage some infestations. Other plants may require systemic products.
Fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf spot thrive in warm, humid conditions. Proper spacing, air circulation, and avoiding overhead watering reduce the risk. If you notice signs of disease, remove affected foliage promptly and throw it away. Copper fungicides and Neem are the first step in controlling fungus.
If You Have Container Gardens
Container gardening continues to be very popular. Keep in mind, however, that potted
plants need extra attention, especially when it comes to watering. Containers dry out faster than in-ground gardens, often requiring daily watering. Group pots together to create a microclimate that retains humidity and reduces evaporation.
Feed container plants regularly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, as nutrients wash out more quickly in pots. Refresh any tired-looking containers by replacing spent annuals with heat-loving varieties like vinca, lantana, or portulaca.
It is also critical to keep containers tidy. Remove blooms that fall down inside and any dead areas to prevent fungal problems.
Wildlife and Pollinator Support
July is a busy time for pollinators. Support them by planting nectar-rich flowers like echinacea, black-eyed Susan, or bee balm. Avoid using pesticides during daylight hours when bees and butterflies are most active, and avoid them altogether if possible!
Birds and beneficial insects also appreciate a water source. A simple birdbath or shallow dish with stones for insects to land on can make a big difference during hot spells.
Final Thoughts
Gardening in July is a hot mix of gardening chores. While it may be demanding, it’s also one of the most rewarding months in the garden. With proper care, your plants will not only survive but thrive - delivering vibrant blooms, fresh produce, and beauty that extends well into the fall.
