CERT HE STUDENT, LOUISE, ACHIEVED UNIVERSITY OFFER FOR MIDWIFERY This is one of the best decisions I have ever made! It was daunting returning to education, but the support and encouragement from my tutors and peers has been amazing. I received so many 1:1 tutorials and my placement at The James Cook University Hospital was invaluable, because I was learning first-hand from the midwives!

Next Steps:

Mum-of-three, Louise, was delighted to have received her university offer for the midwifery degree at Teesside University. Louise’s aim is to graduate as a midwife and work in the delivery suite of a local hospital.

FUTURE PARAMEDIC, JESSICA, ACHIEVED UNIVERSITY PLACE I’d been out of education for a while when I decided to retrain in the healthcare sector. I was confident verbally, but not academically. This course has improved my writing, referencing and research skills. My dad is a retired firefighter and he’s my hero. I’m so happy that I’m making him proud and showing my two daughters that I am career driven!

Next Steps: Jessica received her place for the paramedic science and out of hospital care degree at Sunderland University. Her ambition is to complete her degree and serve in the local community as a paramedic. 14 Advanced Learner Loan

FROM STUDENTS TO BUSINESS PARTNERS JAMILUN AND YAN OPEN THEIR OWN SALON Although we were both nervous going back to college as adult learners, it was the best decision we could have made. The course itself was great, not only did we learn a range of different treatments, we also explored the business and customer service side of things as well. The tutors were really helpful and supportive when it came to setting up our salon and we are both really excited to see what the future holds.

Next Steps:

Both Jamilun and Yan have completed their Level 3 in Beauty Therapy and are exploring the idea of progressing on to the Level 4 in Laser and Light Treatments. As well as studying, they are continuing to run their salon Sparkling Skin which is based in Stockton town centre.

LAURA SECURES DREAM JOB AFTER DISCOVERING HER PASSION FOR TEACHING DURING LOCKDOWN It was during lockdown that I realised how much I enjoyed helping my son with his school work. After working in retail for a long time, I finally plucked up the courage to apply for the course and I’m so glad I did. I love working in a school; no two days are the same and I can officially say I am doing something I love.

Next Steps:

As well as securing temporary employment as a teaching assistant, Laura has also been accepted to study FdA Supporting Teaching & Learning at Stockton Riverside College. Advanced Learner Loan

CREATIVE CAREER CHANGE PROVES TO BE THE RIGHT DECISION FOR NATALIE Before starting the hairdressing course, I was a mental health nurse, however when I had my little boy and went on maternity leave, it just made me think about what I really wanted to do as a career. I have always thought about being a hairdresser but never pursued it, but now I’ve done the level 2 course I regret not doing it straight out of school! The course was so much fun, I loved taking part in all of the regional competitions, I really surprised myself by coming third.

Next Steps:

Natalie has set up her own mobile hairdressing business and is also looking forward to starting her Level 3 Hairdressing course at Stockton Riverside College.

IAN GAINS PERMANENT EMPLOYMENT HELPING OTHERS After suffering from mental health issues in the past, I decided that I wanted to help others and that is why I signed up for the Level 2 Counselling course at Stockton Riverside College. I have loved it so much that I recently applied for a permanent position as a wellbeing practitioner and was successful. Work no longer feels like work, it is such a rewarding career and I love knowing that I am doing my best to help others.”

Next Steps:

Ian has secured permanent employment as a wellbeing practitioner at MIND in Redcar. Alongside his new role, Ian will look to complete his foundation degree with the hope of eventually progressing to a BA Hons in Counselling. 14
