SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT

Rachael’s journey from adult education to graduation

Rachael enrolled at Stockton Riverside College in 2017 on a Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning. This 30-week course was the catalyst for a long-term return to adult education.

Reflecting on her decision, Rachael said: “it has been the most challenging yet most rewarding decision that I’ve made coming back to education, but yet one I would make again in a heartbeat.”

After completing the Level 2 qualification, Rachael progressed further onto a Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning, further strengthening her skills and confidence.

Fast forward to today, and Rachael has achieved an incredible milestone. She recently graduated from Stockton Riverside College, completing a two-year FdA in Supporting Teaching and Learning, followed by a one-year BA (Hons) Education and Training top-up. Her dedication and hard work were recognised when she was chosen as valedictorian speaker for the Class of 2025 at her graduation ceremony.

Huge congratulations, Rachael - an inspiring example of where a part-time course can lead.

Fees and Finance

English and Maths

All GCSE and Functional Skills maths and English courses are free to adults aged 19 and over who do not hold a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths.

Free Level 2 Distance Learning Courses

Level 2 distance learning courses are fully funded if you are aged 19+ and have lived in England for a minimum of 3 years. Please note, a £120 withdrawal or non-completion fee applies if you do not complete your course.

Advanced Learner Loan

What is this?

Those planning to study a level 3-6 further education course, or an Access to Higher Education course, may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the upfront costs of their qualification.

How does it work?

If eligible, the loan will be paid directly to the college on your behalf. This funding gives adults the freedom to study without the worry of financial barriers. It is only repayable once you earn the threshold amount, or more.

The loan application is a credit agreement between you and the Student Loans Company.

When do I pay the loan back?

You’ll only repay when your income is over the threshold amount. For a plan 1 student loan, the threshold is £26,065 a year. Please note, the threshold amounts change on 6 April every year.

Eligibility

Whether you qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan depends on your:

• Age (you must be 19 or older on the first day of your course)

• Course

• College or training provider

• Nationality or residency status

Full eligibility criteria can be found online. Please visit www.gov.uk/advancedlearner-loan.

Access to Higher Education (HE) courses

Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balance owed from an Access to HE course if the learner goes on to complete a higher education course.

If you would like further information or require support when applying for your Advanced Learner Loan, please visit the Student Services Hub at your college site or email studentfinance@the-etc.ac.uk.
