WINTER EDITION 2022

Health and social care students help save lives WITH THE

CHRIS CAVE

Our amazing health and social care students gave their time to help lend a hand to The Chris Cave Foundation, filling potentially life-saving stab-packs. These pocket-size emergency kits were sponsored by GRAHAM Group and Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, and they will be shared with colleges, youth clubs, and taxi drivers. Well done everyone!

A few hours of bag packing might not sound like much, but the efforts of these Stockton Riverside College students could turn out to be lifesaving.

The college’s health and social care team volunteered their time to fill potentially lifesaving “stab packs” as part of a drive to get the emergency packages into the pockets and bags of young people across Teesside.

Driving the initiative is Redcar mum, Theresa Cave, whose 17-year-old son, Chris, was stabbed and killed in Redcar in 2003, and since then has worked tirelessly to help tackle knife crime.

Theresa said: “The stab packs are light and easy to carry but they could make all the difference in the event of a stabbing.

FOUNDATION

They contain essential emergency supplies that could help stem the bleeding until paramedics arrive.”

Each pack contains a tourniquet, bleed gauze, gloves, antiseptic, and instructions.

Eager to lend a hand, health and social care students from Stockton Riverside College packed up to 1000 of the kits.

Stockton Riverside College student Bethany, 17, of Middlesbrough, said: “I feel that I have learnt a lot from this. It is so important and can make a real difference in a serious situation.”

Pitching in with the students’ effort Pam Green, social value advisor at GRAHAM commented: “The packs can make a real difference in an emergency and by working with young people to fill them it is a real practical experience that will stick in their minds making the project even more impactful.”

WINNING ONE WEEK WORTH OF WORK EXPERIENCE AT PORSCHE

Motor Vehicle tutor, Dave, gave his students the opportunity to win one week worth of hands-on practical experience at Porsche, the reputable car dealership!

The names of students with the most attendance were placed into a hat, and pulled out by campus principal, Lesley. toThe names of students with the most attendance were placed into a hat, and pulled out by campus principal, Lesley. This was a fantastic opportunity for any student studying a Motor

Vehicle course as it offers a chance to get your hands dirty and explore the real-life working environment, so here’s to a big congratulations to Dylan, who won himself a full week’s worth of experience working at Porsche with the experts!

Dylan said he enjoyed his experience at Porsche and worked on some amazing cars. Aftersales Manager, Tim Copeland, told us that although Dylan was nervous to start with them, he quickly settled in and enjoyed his experience at Porsche Centre Teesside.

Stockton Riverside College rated ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ features

‘It’s fantastic to see our incredible teams recognised’: Ofsted says education group has ‘outstanding’ features.

In its first full inspection since the merger of Stockton Riverside College and Redcar and Cleveland College, the group, which also includes Bede Sixth Form College, NETA Training and The Skills Academy (Billingham), has been rated ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ features.

The report describes a college group where students are “very proud to study” and they benefit from “a strong culture of positive respect”.

Group principal and chief executive, Phil Cook, said: “As a group our aim, above all else, is to provide high quality local colleges for local people. Gaining outstanding for leadership and management is a fantastic accolade for the group, but also and importantly for those stakeholders we work with; you do not achieve outstanding without excellent partnerships that have a direct impact on our students learning.”

The college group was also rated ‘Outstanding’ for behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and education programmes for young people, and rated ‘Good’ in all other areas.

Inspectors also recognised the support that learners, of all ages and abilities, receive and the enrichment programme that “helps them to develop their wider employability skills, confidence, and resilience.”

Former chairman of the Etc. governing board, Mark White OBE DL, said: “As a board of governors we welcome this Ofsted result which is testament to the commitment of all our teams and the work they do to deliver for our communities.”

Mark, who retired in the summer after 27 years on the boards of the colleges that make up the Etc., added: “I am extremely proud to have been a part of this incredible group of colleges, of everything it has achieved and everything it will go on to achieve in the future.”

NEW INDUSTRY-STANDARD T LEVEL FACILITIES ARE COMING TO STOCKTON RIVERSIDE COLLEGE, THANKS TO A RECENTLY APPROVED INVESTMENT

Recently, the Department for Education announced the successful recipients of T Level Wave 4 capital funding, for further education facility investments, and Stockton Riverside College has been invited to deliver a capital project under the scheme, at its site in Thornaby.

The project, which represents a total spend of more than £2.5m, will be funded, in part, by the Department for Education’s T Level Wave 4 Capital Funding grant, which has been allocated to further roll out the new T Level qualifications which offer students classroom-based practical learning alongside an industrial placement of approximately 45 days.

Stockton Riverside College will see significant development of facilities across construction, motor vehicle, health and hair and beauty curriculum areas.

Stockton Riverside College principal, Lesley Graham, said: “I am delighted with the announcement and look forward to seeing the positive impact that this investment will have on learning spaces, across college. “For some time now, we have been working with employers to design curriculum and plan the industrial placements, and we are primed to hit the ground running with our first cohort of T Level learners in September – the invitation to deliver these improvements to our learning spaces will ensure that our already outstanding

facilities will remain aligned with the latest innovations in industrial workplaces, which will ultimately lead to our learners leaving college with the skills and workplace experiences they need to achieve their career aspirations.”

T Levels were introduced by the Government in the last academic year, with a primary aim of ensuring that teaching, learning and resources match the skills needed for the workplace, delivered through a mixture of classroom and on-the-job training, and are available across a widerange of sectors including construction, engineering, digital, health and many more.

Speaking of the announcement, Matt Vickers, MP for Stockton South, added: “I am thrilled with the news of this approved investment into Stockton Riverside College. The college sits at the heart of my constituency, and has far-reaching positive impact on our local community, so these additional funds will not only improve the fantastic facilities and learning areas of the college – which will be great for so many students long into the future - but they will also ensure that local people are wellpositioned to access jobs and secure better futures for themselves.”

Work is expected to commence on site from January 2023, with minimal disruption to current learning schedules.

MEET OUR NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AND GROUP PRINCIPAL Grant Glendinning

The Education Training Collective (Etc.) governing board has announced the appointment of Grant Glendinning as its new chief executive officer and group principal. Grant is due to join the Etc. after the summer, taking the reins from Phil Cook who has led the group since 2013.

Mark White OBE DL, chair at Etc., said: “Phil Cook has had such significant impact – for which the board is incredibly grateful - and his leadership has transformed this group to such an extent that we needed someone with the skillset and background to be able to pick up the baton and run with it.

“I am delighted that Grant has been appointed to the role and I know that the board is very much looking forward to working with him when he joins.”

Stuart Blackett, newly appointed Chair of the Etc. governing board

As a part of the Education Training Collective (Etc.) we are pleased to announce the appointment of Stuart Blackett, as chair of the Etc. governing board. Stuart took the reins in the late summer, from our former chair of the board Mark White OBE DL.

Stuart looks forward to the opportunities ahead, and to leading the group to further success. Stuart said: “It is an exciting time to be a

part of the college group, and to be here in the Tees Valley where there is so much potential.”

Looking to his fellow board members and colleagues across the group, he said: “Being surrounded by fantastic people has made my role as governor, and now the transition to chairman, so much easier.

“I didn’t set out to become chair of the board, but what an honour!”

ART AND DESIGN

STUDENTS

‘A

WAY OUT’ IN TEESSIDE.

SUPPORT LOCAL VULNERABLE WOMEN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES CHARITY,

Take a look at some of their designs so far.

Our Level 2 Art and Design students have the opportunity to design a T-Shirt to help support a local Stockton charity. ‘A Way Out’ is an outreach and prevention charity that aims to engage, empower, and equip vulnerable and excluded women, families, and young people to live lives free from harm, abuse, and exploitation and to reduce life limiting choices and behaviour.

The charity provided our students with a list of words from their clients, that were based on what the charity means to them. These included freedom, hopes and dreams, friendship and empowerment. The students have been busy working away on their design ideas and will present these to Donna Walker and the

CEO of the charity in December where they will then select and winner.

Liz Dixon course leader said “This has been an excellent opportunity for the students to work on a live project brief. The students will learn about designing for a specific brief for a client as they would in industry. They have also been able to develop their graphic design skills and learn the importance of layout, use of colour and using text and images together ”

The winning design, which will then be printed and sold to help raise money for the charity, will be announced on our social media in the coming weeks so remember to follow us to see the updates. @stocktonriversideart

Ready… Set… Whitby!

On the 2nd of November, our Acting for Stage and Screen, Film and TV production and Makeup for Stage and Screen students embarked on an overnight trip in Whitby with the aim of creating suspense inspired films using the amazing local landscapes of Whitby Abbey itself and the surrounding areas. This trip provided the students with the opportunity to film on location under time restrictions that mirrored what they may face in a professional, industry setting.

Course tutor Kane said “The students did an amazing job,

battling through challenging weather conditions to get the footage that they needed.”

The finished films premiered on the UFilms YouTube channel on the 18th of November. Scan the QR code above to watch!

Scared of the dark?

Don’t worry, the ghost light is always on…

Stockton Globe’s Creative Learning department worked in partnership with our APTA department here at Stockton Riverside College to present a unique and immersive theatrical experience this past Halloween weekend.

Stockton Globes Ghost Light Tours provided our Actors, Film Students, Makeup for Stage and Screen and Art and Design students the opportunity to collaborate on their first site specific event of the year. After weeks of hard work, rehearsals, makeup trials and lots of determination, our students successfully delivered two days of sell out shows!

Here at Stockton Riverside College our APTA learners benefit from their ability to collaborate allowing all performing and

technical arts students the chance to get as much hands-on, real work experience as possible.

From black and white movie stars to deceased ballerinas, nothing was too much trouble for our makeup learners who did an excellent job bringing the characters of theatres past, to life. Art & Design students created a fantastic arrangement of pumpkins to set the scene for the start of these shows, all of which helped our actors get into character to lead these immersive tours.

MEET OUR T LEVEL AMBASSADORS for our childcare and Education, and Health and Science Routes!

Recently we caught up with students, Alfie, Mirren and Vivian, who have enrolled on our brand-new T Level in Childcare and Education. Now a term into this new qualification, we asked how they were finding the course and what they were enjoying most about it.

Vivian said “I love the placement, every week I go, I come back with a smile on my face and I want to stay there longer.” Mirren added “I also really like placement, going in twice a week to work with the kids. That’s when you know when you’re going to like something when you’re actually doing it.” Alfie said “I’m enjoying all of it, everyone is very friendly and welcoming and it’s not sitting down and writing pages of work, it’s practical orientated as well.”

Students Joseph and Jessica are also studying on a T Level with us here at Stockton Riverside College, but they opted for the Heath and Science route. Joseph told us “I decided on the T Level

over the Level 3 Diploma because there’s more hospital focus and placement involved and more science, and I’m a big fan of science!” He added, “The course has been really good, the teachers are really nice. We’ve been learning about the heart and genetics so far.”

Jessica told us that she chose the T Level because she wanted to put herself in the best position to start off her career. She said “I knew the T Level would give me more placement time and help me get more experience.” When asked if she was enjoying the course so far, she told us “Yeah, there’s lots of friendships being made and everyone is so welcoming. I enjoy the science element a lot more.”

We’re so glad our learners are enjoying their T Level experience so far and we’ll be following up with these students over the course of this academic year to see how their studies continue.

RACHEL IS HEADING IN THE FLIGHT DIRECTION!

Due to her high attendance and effort in assignment work, Level 2 Aviation student, Rachel has been awarded student of the term! Rachel was presented her award from former Stockton Riverside College students, Kelcie and Freya who came back to talk to our current Level 2 students, about their success in the industry since leaving the college. Both girls have successfully gained positions at Ryanair as Cabin Crew.

Earlier in the term, our Level 3 Aviation learners were also joined by former students, Jade, Sophie, and Rebecca who also came in to share their success with the class before getting involved with some practical activities on our mock

aircraft! Jade is now working for British Airways and Sophie and Rebecca are with Jet2. Catherine Carney, Aviation Course Leader, said “It is important for alumni students to return to college as they show to current students that it is possible to succeed in the industry and it provides our learners the opportunity to hear first-hand about their career options and what is involved, along with tips regarding the application process and training details. These visits inspire and motivate current students to work hard to achieve their goals. Our alumni often work in the classroom and take part in mock scenarios with the students.”

We caught up with some of our Level 3 Games and Animation students to ask how they’re enjoying college and why they chose their course!
