Welcome

I am delighted that you are considering Bede Sixth Form College.

Bede Sixth Form continues to go from strength to strength. Last year, we were inspected by Ofsted and were graded ‘Outstanding’ in the following areas:

• Education programmes for young people

• Behaviour and attitudes

• Personal development

• Leadership and management

I am also pleased to announce that we were successful in our bid to the Department for Education to secure funding towards a £2.4m annexe to our building which is now fully operational providing stateof-the-art facilities in health sciences, creative and business and legal subject areas.

I am proud to say that Bede students leave us fully prepared for their next steps. We have a three-year trend of 98% positive destinations – students leave us to go into higher education,

employment or apprenticeships. These figures are significantly higher than the national benchmark for sixth form colleges, and with our culture of continuous improvement, we can guarantee you a fulfilling and enriching post-16 education.

During the past year, we have continued to establish links with local employers and businesses to ensure that Bede students are provided with significant work experience opportunities. In the past year alone, our students have worked with Teesside University, University of Sunderland, Zest Theatre Company, HM Coastguard, Centre for Life, ARC, York St John University, NHS, Evora Global and many, many more. Add to that our Aspiring Young Engineers Programme in partnership with NETA Training, enhanced study skills development, High Achievers Programme, Student Ambassador Leadership

Programme, and so much more - it really is a fantastic time to be a student here at Bede Sixth Form College.

We continue to expand our Institute of Sport and Education (ISE) academies. Our teams performed at the top of the leagues that they took part in – I am especially proud of our women’s football team who finished top of the NECL Premiership. We are recognised for providing outstanding support for talented sports performers, ensuring that they excel both in competition and academically, and we are a Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) Accredited College.

So, what do our students say about us? Recent surveys have strongly agreed that we are providing an outstanding student experience. We listen carefully to the views of our students. In response to student feedback we have continued to

invest significantly in student learning areas, sports facilities, collaborative learning spaces, and private study areas. This, combined with our increasing portfolio of employability programmes and employer interactions, will help shape and develop your wider skills and career aspirations.

At Bede, we believe in and reward high aspirations, determination and resilience. The target grades that we will set you are designed to challenge you, and we will do everything we can to ensure that you meet your desired progression and career goals. Our, now well established, ‘10am start timetable’, continues to have a significant impact on the wellbeing and the achievement of our students as well as helping to reduce our environmental impact by avoiding peak travel times. Our comprehensive wraparound pastoral support also means you will be supported

by a talented team of Personal Progression Coordinators and careers guidance professionals. We understand that the move from school to sixth form is challenging; we are well practised in easing this transition and providing you with the platform to not only excel in your studies, but to give you full confidence in moving towards your own career goals.

I am certain that we can make your time at Bede Sixth Form an inspirational, enjoyable and rewarding experience. I know how important it is to make the right choice of college and study programme. So please, take the time to visit us on our open evenings, Twilight Events, ISE High Performance camps, speak to our staff and students and try out the courses during ‘Preview’ in the summer; you won’t be disappointed. I wish you the best of luck with your GCSEs and I look forward to welcoming you to Bede.

We have monthly themes including diversity celebrations, physical and positive mental health promotion, and respect.

The Union provides opportunities for you to get involved in influencing the College as well as opportunities for election to Bede President in early September. Look out for posters and information.

Charity and Community Projects

Here at Bede, we are proud to participate in a variety of charitable events and community projects. We work particularly closely with Billingham Food Bank, raising much needed supplies for the local community and recently raised just over £1800 to help support the crisis in Ukraine. In 2018 we launched the now established Institute of Sport and Education (ISE) here at Bede Sixth Form College.

Bede’s Institute of Sport and Education enables Bede students to study A levels, A level equivalents and full-time vocational courses whilst being part of our performance sports academies.

Sport and physical activity play a vital role in many aspects of health and are crucial to the learner experience. It is widely recognised that sport and activity offer an array of widereaching benefits for students, from boosting concentration to stress relief.

The whole ethos of ISE is about using sport as a vehicle for positive progression. The ISE

will provide opportunities unique to the Tees Valley for up-and-coming young sportspeople, and those passionate about sport and physical activity. The Institute of Sport and Education is committed to playing a key role within the community, clubs and schools to enhance physical and mental wellbeing through physical activity.

We recognise the pressures that young athletes face and the impact that this can have on academic progress and mental wellbeing. They can often feel they are being dragged in two different directions, having to decide whether they pursue their sporting ambition or academic success.

We have the infrastructure to fully support young athletes and have strategies in place to ensure they can make progress in both their education and sporting goals.

To apply visit: www.bede.ac.uk 85 T LEVELS

What Are T Levels?

T Levels are a two-year course, being introduced by the government, primarily aimed at 16 to 19-year-old learners.

The equivalent to three A levels, they are a level 3 technical option that combines classroombased learning with a strong element of on-the-job training through a 45-day industry placement.

T Levels have been developed in select subject areas, alongside employers and businesses to ensure they meet industry needs. The courses are being rolled out gradually to colleges and providers.

The qualification is made up of two main parts, a technical qualification and an industry placement.

Technical qualification:

• Core content (knowledge and skills relevant to all occupations covered by the T Level).

• An occupational specialism (the knowledge and practical skills to enter employment in a particular occupation).

Industry placement:

• Every T Level will include an industry placement with an employer, which will last a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) but can be longer.

The difference between a T Level and an A level

T Levels are the technical equivalent to three A levels. They will cover core theory, concepts and specialist skills and knowledge

for a specific career or occupation. The main difference between the T Level and A levels is the compulsory industry placement. This will last a minimum of 315 hours and make up 20% of the course.

If you opt to study a T Level, you will study one stand-alone full-time subject. When studying A levels, you choose a combination, usually of three subjects. Academically demanding, T Levels incorporate English, maths and digital content.

The difference between a T Level and an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are built for those who know what occupation they want to pursue and are ready to enter the world of work. They are typically made up of a combination of 80% on-the-job training and 20% in the classroom. T Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers and providers so that the content “meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work”. T Levels are based on the same industrial standards as apprenticeships, created specifically by employers and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

Formula 1 Success for Sam

90 Bede Sixth Form College Prospectus 24/25 STUDENT SUCCESS
The dream of a career in Formula 1 is now a reality for former Bede student Sam. Hard work, dedication and the right combination of subjects has seen this successful former Bede student rise to the pinnacle of his career, securing his dream job at Red Bull Racing.

Sam, 25, studied at Bede Sixth Form College for two years before progressing on to Newcastle University, studying mechanical engineering. He then continued his studies, completing a master’s degree before securing a place on a graduate scheme at Caterpillar Articulated Trucks.

After three and a half years at Caterpillar, Sam received an offer to work as a designer in Formula 1.

“I am currently working as an electronic system design engineer at Red Bull Racing which means I am responsible for taking electrical systems and schematics and finding ways to fit them onto the Formula 1 car,” he said.

Looking back on his first impressions of Bede, Sam said: “After visiting on open days, I knew Bede was for me. I found the tutors very friendly and easy to chat to, alongside them being knowledgeable and passionate about what they were teaching. The modern building and environment on campus was also a big draw for me and I thought it would be the best place for me to continue my studies.”

Sam chose a mixture of subjects, ensuring he considered his future progression and his career aspirations.

He explained: “I was still unsure what I wanted to do at university, I tried to take a mixture of subjects I enjoyed as I think you do best in those, and subjects I felt would leave the most doors open down the line. I therefore decided to take Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I then also tried to take one subject which wasn’t like the other three subjects to break up the week and again leave options open which for me was Music Technology.”

When we asked Sam what advice he would give the students of Bede Sixth Form today, he said: “Make sure you do what you enjoy. You will find it easier to learn as you will be more interested, and you will be more likely to go the extra mile. It’s nice to see your job as a hobby rather than something you do to earn money. It has been said so many times before but it’s very true!”

And would he recommend Bede?

“Absolutely! The facilities are first class no matter what subject you are studying, and the quality of the teaching is excellent. For me it felt like all the tutors wanted you to succeed and gave their all to make sure this would happen, going the extra mile at every opportunity”.

Congratulations Sam, from everyone here at Bede Sixth Form!

Celebrating our amazing students at Bede

The hard work paid off for students at Bede Sixth Form College, with results day providing plenty of reason to celebrate.

Overjoyed learners from the college in Billingham picked up the grades they needed to secure a place at their first-choice universities, higher apprenticeships and job offers.

Results day success included an impressive 100% pass rate in 12 A level subjects and 12 vocational courses, while 37.5% of Bede’s A level students received A* to B grades and 13.5% achieved the highest A* or A grades.

Patrick said: “We are really pleased with our students’ results, and particularly proud to see the majority of our learners successful in gaining their first-choice places at university.

“For us here at Bede, destinations are just as important as grades. After all that is what we

are here for, to see our students aim high and achieve their ambitions.”

A former Bede student himself, results day 2023 proved an extra special one for him, as the first since he has been officially in post as Bede principal, and also seeing his own son complete his studies at the college. Alfie has now successfully progressed to a higher apprenticeship.

Happy to take the helm of the college in what was Bede’s 50th anniversary year, Patrick has also overseen the development of the college’s all-new £2.4m annexe, making space for more students. Wow, what a year!

92 Bede Sixth Form College Prospectus 24/25 A LEVEL RESULTS DAY 2023

Sport student Alisha is feeling on the ball after achieving a triple distinction star in sport and exercise science at Bede Sixth Form College. The result has paved the way for the former All Saints pupil from Ingleby Barwick to continue her studies in the same subject with a place at Leeds Beckett University.

Next stop is the University of Glasgow for Bede student Tess, after achieving a handful of A* and A grades. The 18-year-old from Stockton described seeing her results on paper as a relief, particularly after all the hard work she put in. The former Yarm School pupil will now study English Literature and the History of Art at university. Of her time at Bede, she said: “I have loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat!”

Alfie, who is a former Northfield student, was very happy and very pleased to receive a Distinction * in Music Technology, a Merit in Health & Social Care and a D in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. Other than his dad being the principal of the college, Alfie chose to study at Bede Sixth Form for his love of music and the college being on his doorstep! Having secured an apprenticeship as a Environmental Protection Officer with Stockton Borough Council, Alfie hopes to find a career in environmental sector. Well done Alfie!
