Year in summary, lessons, directions in 2026? Sure, let’s do a bit of that.

National, global, economic, generational, societal, and other forces created much turbulence in 2025.

Some of the most impactful national items: the cuts to National Parks, Forests, Monuments; global tariffs; the elimination of most student loan relief; heightened tensions with other nations; slashed support for world health; erasing and ignoring science; denigration in words and deeds of people of other countries, cultures, color; a national culture of divisiveness and fabrication; and so on.

So, how do all of these broad factors affect Estes Park? Do some of these impact tourist patterns? Yes. Do some create societal stresses that lead to ever-increasing behavioral health issues? Yes. Do they impact caution in the family budget when shopping for groceries? Yes. Do they impact negatively how some of our residents and visitors treat each other? Yes. We are living in a time of cultural upheaval and economic uncertainty. In the meantime, and always, we must do the right things locally. We’ll keep working to maintain roads, repair infrastructure, strengthen services, hire strong leaders and good staff, listen to you, and try to improve things for Estes.

So, what in 2025 advises actions and behaviors in 2026?

Rocky Mountain National Park must prepare for more substantial budget cuts. Estes proved its compassion with great support for furloughed employees. Visitors and residents were good stewards as they treated the Park with respect even while support staff was significantly pared.

Hike in pairs or groups! I have great sympathy for the deceased Mt. Crosier female hiker. My wife and I have personal stories of dangerous wildlife close encounters and so we are very much touched by the tragedy, for the woman and her family.

Childcare services continue to be supported, nurtured, expanded, notably by Rut Miller and her amazing EVICS team and through the Town’s expansive efforts.

The artistic future of Estes is bright.

Whimsadoodle, the sale of the Stanley to safe perpetuity, renovated Cleave Street, the creative arts district designation, the jubilant Chocolate Factory, and more: Estes arts and entertainment are unique, growing, and inviting.

With most of the major road/street constructions completed in recent years, we had significantly less impedances on that front. 2026 should be similar.

The voters spoke and initiative 300 is now the law of the land. While I would always prefer 100% of voters to weigh in, we had around 40%, so if my arithmetic is right (53% in favor of 300 out of 40% of voters who voted), about 21.2% of the Estes voting population made that decision, and the Town now owns that ordinance. Democracy in action!

Nonprofits continue to provide critical and highly useful services: the Bridge of Estes, Estes Valley Crisis Advocates, Restorative Justice, the Education Foundation, Harmony, the Recycling Committee, the League of Women Voters, the Pet Association, Rocky Mountain Conservancy, and many others. Salud is still in operation, and I hope that their leadership can find a way to continue apace. In 2026, I will continue to support Mary Mesropian and Peter Sinnott’s progress toward Dementia Day Services.

Our work to maintain dependability and affordability while moving toward green electricity continues. There’s a possibility that the feds will tell us that we (through PRPA) can’t shut down the Rawhide coal plant as planned in 2029. This would disrupt our green plans substantially. I believe it should be left to the four municipalities to determine our green future, not the federal government.

In the meantime, our local electrical team continues to be superstars, and Trailblazer will continue to close the gap toward 100% coverage. Tech workers, come on up and use our bandwidth!

I’m encouraging business owners and other organizations to create a support group and path for our summer student workers (J-1s) to give them recourse when needed.

Transportation continues to evolve with expanded routes and options, though we have a long way to go to get to the glorious future of fast mass and micro transit everywhere in Estes, the Park, the Front Range and beyond. But incremental progress occurs each year.

Visit Estes Park had ups and downs but is now on a path of restructuring, including leadership by new CEO Sarah Leonard. I do expect them to focus on keeping summer strong, making winter ever more viable, and cultivating destination stewardship.

Superintendent Ruby Bode and her team continue to evolve an inclusive, forward-thinking student population.

I’ve seen more than a glimpse of the astuteness of our local students. I answered questions in high-school civics and government classes; had the sixthgrade classes visit the Board Room for an afternoon of fast-paced Q&A; and attended the elementary school job fair. All gave me faith in the future.

Finally, for now, we continue to have civility in our public discourse to a great degree. We need to continue to work on the trust factor. On a local level, it takes effort from all parties to maintain a positive atmosphere of public trust. Great achievements are possible when we can all share a trusting environment.

You have to have a little faith in people.

Go Behind The Scenes With The Community Police Academy Ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at the Estes Park Police Department? Find out by attending the 2026 Community Police Academy. This informative series of classes, sponsored by the Town’s Police Department and offered free of charge, will take place Mondays and Thursdays from January 26th through February 26th. Sessions take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Estes Park Museum, 200 4th St. The class size is limited to 30. Applications are available at the front desk of the Police Department at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Ave, and at estes.org/communitypoliceacademy. Applications must be received by Friday, January 16th and should be returned to Executive Assistant Peni Barnes at the Estes Park Police Department front desk or via email at pbarnes@estes.org. Applicants will be required to pass a limited criminal

background check prior to acceptance.

Community Police Academy familiarizes participants with everything from crime scene investigation to DUI Enforcement.

The classes will include topics that are common among law enforcement agencies, as well as issues that are unique to Estes Park, including patrol operations, investigations, the Estes Park Emergency Communication Center, the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership, and the Auxiliary Police unit. Following graduation, many academy graduates choose to continue involvement with the Police Department through its volunteer programs.

However, a commitment to future volunteering is not required.

On December 24th, police served a misdemeanor/traffic arrest warrant to a 60-yearold male at 453 E. Wonderview Avenue. He was booked and released.

On December 25th, police were called to 640 Columbine Avenue. On scene they contacted a 25-year-old female and charged her with second degree assault, false reporting to authorities, resisting arrest, and domestic violence. She was arrested and transported to Larimer County Jail.

On December 27th, police served a misdemeanor/traffic arrest warrant to a 46-yearold female in the 1200-block of Big Thompson Avenue. She was booked and released.

On December 27th, police stopped a 25year-old female driver in the 200-block of Moraine Avenue. The suspect was charged with driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving a vehicle with blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more, and

failure to observe/disregarded a traffic control device. She was booked and released.

On December 28th, police stopped a 27year-old male driver in the 100-block of W. Elkhorn Avenue. The suspect was charged with driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving a vehicle with blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more, driving with park lights when headlights required, and driving a vehicle with a license under restriction. He was booked and released.

On December 31st, police cited a 66-yearold male in the 300-block of W. Riverside for leaving a scene without providing required information.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Larimer Co. Treasurer Encourages Property Owners To Go Paperless Larimer County Treasurer & Public Trustee Irene Josey encourages property owners to sign up for eNotices, a secure and environmentally friendly way to receive property tax statements electronically.

Each year, nearly 90,000 paper tax statements and more than 70,000 postcards are mailed countywide. Tax statements for 2025 taxes payable in 2026 will be mailed by the end of January 2026. eNotices allows prop-

erty owners to access statements online, pay securely from anywhere, and reduce paper clutter. “eNotices is a convenient option that saves time and supports sustainability,” Josey said.

Warren Jones, Interim Fire Chief for the Estes Valley Fire Protection District Jon Landkamer, Division Chief of Support Services, and Logan Lasley, Wildland Risk Reduction Educator, will speak about: • The fire district’s current activities and plans for this Warren Jones year Interim Fire Chief • The overall wildfire risk in northern Colorado and collaboration with other fire districts • The highly successful wildfire Hazard Ignition Zone home assessments Warren Jones served for 27 years in Fort Collins at Poudre Fire Authority.

He then served as fire chief for the City of Evans, and later the Evans Fire Protection District. After retiring from Evans in 2014 he served in interim leadership roles at Glacier View Fire

District in NW Larimer County, Wescott Fire District in El Paso County and Aims Community College in Windsor.

Chief Landkamer spent almost thirty years of his career living and working at YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park Center, most of that as Superintendent of the Buildings & Grounds Department. Chief Landkamer then developed and led the new Facilities Division for the Town, as part of the Public Works leadership team.

Logan Lasley joined the Estes Valley Fire Protection District in the Spring of 2023 as a volunteer firefighter. Before moving to Estes Park, he lived and worked in Grand Canyon National Park where he was a training coordinator and assisted with Preventive Search & Rescue operations.

Kelly McDonald Returns To Estes Park To Help Community “Think Big” Free Estes Park Health Foundation Speaker Event Focuses on Growth Mindset for Personal and Professional Success The Estes Park Health Foundation is pleased to welcome back nationally recognized speaker Kelly McDonald for a free community event designed to inspire big thinking, meaningful growth, and lasting impact.

For the New Year’s Eve celebration Joe and I went to at the home of friends, I put together a 2025 year in review trivia quiz as part of the evening’s entertainment. After dinner and before the midnight countdown, we revelers delved into lively conversations prompted by the trivia questions, which were taken from the magazine The Week and were mostly about politics.

Thankfully, there were a few questions that were not political, which kept us from getting glum and spoiling the champagne toast.

Two questions in particular got the group wound up. (As much as folks between the ages of 65 and 91 can get wound up.) (We proved to be quite excitable, believe it or not.)

The first was: QUESTION: Xania Monet, Velvet Sundown and Breaking Rust all had big hits on Billboard or Spotify this year.

What else do these artists have in common?

ANSWER: All three are AI generated.

Because we were all from generations that listen to rock ’n roll, folk and classical music, none of us had heard of any of the three “artists” mentioned in the question, ergo, we weren’t familiar with their music. So we brought up Xania Monet’s How Was I Supposed to Know? on YouTube and listened to the recording. I was surprised how real it sounded. I could even hear “her” breathe between phrases. But “she” isn’t real. She is computer generated.

Some real, live artists resent that they have trained, studied, practiced, and sometimes gone hungry or slept on somebody’s floor while trying to survive and hopefully thrive in the music industry. Plus, all of Artificial Intelligence is created by compiling already existing information to make new material. Live artists believe their work is being stolen by AI creators. I asked AI to explain itself. Here is what it said: “Yes, many artists and labels argue AI music is ‘stolen’ because AI models are trained on vast amounts of copyrighted music without permission, leading to lawsuits alleging infringement, unfair competition, and lack of artist compensation, while AI companies often claim ‘fair use,’ creating major legal and ethical debates about ownership, originality, and the future of human creativity in music.”

Gulp. It is hard to decide how I believe regarding the ethics of this topic. I tend to lean in favor of live artists, but then, isn’t everything built on what came before? After all the debate on New Year’s Eve, I still don’t have the answer. I just provided the question.

Here was the second trivia question that brought lots of laughs:

QUESTION: Thanks to a social media meme, math teachers across the country learned that to avoid sending students into a freeze of laughter they should avoid mentioning which two consecutive numbers?

ANSWER: 6, 7.

The whole 6-7 thing is a hoot! For those who got stuck living back in 2024 (I don’t blame you. Things were a lot less traumatic then), the dictionary.com Word of the Year for 2025 is “6-7.”

It has no definition and is primarily used by Gen Alpha and Gen Z-ers in a nonsensical, inside-joke manner. To say it right, you need to hold both hands face-up at elbow level and alternately move them up and down, as if you are tossing and catching a beanbag with each hand. If anyone of an earlier generation tries to sound hip by saying “67,” kids will crack up without explanation. We just aren’t in on the joke and we shouldn’t pretend we are.

I absolutely love the 6-7 phenomenon!

There is nothing else like it—this “word” that means nothing but which every kid understands. Adults are not allowed into the 6-7 clubhouse because we don’t get it. The catch-phrase is clever, droll, and utter nonsense—just what we need at a time when so much around us is beating us down.

At the New Year’s Eve party, after trivia fun, we booted 2025 out the door and celebrated the incoming, gotta-bebetter-than-last-year, 2026. We did this at 10:30 p.m. by slurping long soba noodles to assure long life, as they do in Japan. (Except I couldn’t find soba noodles so we used ramen noodles which means we’ll each live a long, zigzaggy life.)

More Than Just Getting By: EVICS Expands Mental Health Support For Families In The Estes Valley By: Rut Miller

Late in the evening, after the house has finally gone quiet, a parent sits alone at the kitchen table. Bills are spread out. Unanswered messages glow on a phone screen. Tomorrow’s responsibilities already feel heavy.

They think about reaching out for help—but worry about cost, language barriers, and whether anyone would truly understand what they are going through.

This is what stress looks like for many families in the Estes Valley—often invisible and rarely spoken aloud.

At EVICS Family Resource Center, these moments are often the starting point for conversations about mental health—and why accessible, culturally responsive care matters.

Families in our community are working hard every day: raising children, holding jobs, caring for loved ones, navigating change, and doing their best to move forward. But behind that strength, many are quietly carrying stress, grief, fear, and exhaustion with very few places to turn.

At EVICS, we see those realities every day.

And we listen.

Over the past year, EVICS paused to ask a deeper question: What is really getting in the way of families accessing

mental health support in our community?

The answers—shared directly by community members—were clear and humbling.

Families told us they face language barriers, limited affordable options, long wait times, stigma, and a lack of culturally responsive care. Many shared that they didn’t even know what mental health services existed locally.

That listening changed us.

Mental health is not a luxury. It is foundational to family stability, child development, and community well-being. When parents are overwhelmed, children feel it. When families carry stress alone, the whole community feels it.

In response to what we heard, EVICS took action.

In 2025, with support from Larimer County Behavioral Health Services and the Larimer Region 2 Opioid Abatement initiative, EVICS expanded access to professional, culturally responsive mental health care right here in the Estes Valley.

Today, EVICS offers individual, family, youth, and couples services in

both Spanish and English. Licensed therapy services include up to eight free sessions, beginning with a 90-minute initial visit dedicated to truly understanding each individual or family, followed by confidential, judgmentfree care centered on dignity and trust.

Licensed therapy services are provided by a credentialed mental health professional. Coaching and peer support services are non-clinical and focus on guidance, connection, and practical support.

This program exists so families don’t have to choose between getting help and feeling understood.

But healing doesn’t end when a session does.

Through this expansion, EVICS is also training three bilingual community members as Peer Support Specialists—individuals with lived experience who can walk alongside others with empathy, understanding, and connection. Peer support groups offer a powerful reminder: no one is alone, and healing is stronger when shared.

Support at EVICS is not only about crisis or diagnosis. It is about creating space—space to breathe, to talk, to reflect, to heal, and to simply be human.

A Message From The Superintendent: Ruby Bode Announces End-of-Year Resignation Dear Estes Park Community, I am writing to share that I will be resigning from my role as Superintendent of Estes Park School District at the conclusion of this school year.

I came to this district in 2005, and over the past twenty years I have had the incredible privilege of serving this community as a teacher, coach, principal, director, and superintendent. I have spent nearly my entire career growing alongside your children, your families, and this remarkable mountain community.

This decision was not an easy one and is rooted in personal circumstances that require me to prioritize my family while remaining fully committed to serving the district through the end of this school year. I share this with great care, as my love for Estes Park School District and this community runs deep.

Leaving Estes Park is incredibly diffi-

cult. I have been supported, cared for, and embraced by this community in ways I will be forever grateful. You trusted me with your children, partnered with our schools, and allowed me the grace to learn, grow, and lead with authenticity. I am a better educator and a better person because of this community.

The Oratorio Society of Estes Park will begin rehearsals for performance of Mozart’s Requiem on Sunday, January 18th at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. The chorus meets from 4:30 – 6 p.m. and the orchestra meets from 6:30 – 8 p.m. weekly. Performances of this iconic work will be May 8th at 7 p.m. and May 9th at 2 p.m.

New singers are welcome to join us in preparing for this work. All voice parts are welcome, but there is a particular

need for sopranos. Singers should be able to read a vocal line and be available for weekly rehearsals. Auditions are not required.

Instrumentalists are also needed, especially string players. In addition to the Mozart Requiem, the orchestra will also perform “Schindler’s List” by John Williams.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is investigating a suspected fatal mountain lion attack on the Crosier Mountain trail in unincorporated Larimer County on January 1st, 2026. Around 12:15 p.m., hikers reported seeing a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground from approximately 100 yards away. As they approached, the witnesses scared the lion from the area by throwing rocks at the animal. The hikers then attended to the adult woman victim but did not find a pulse.

CPW officers, Larimer County Sheriff deputies, Estes Park police, and Glen Haven Area Volunteer firefighters responded to the area to launch an extensive search for any mountain lions.

A CPW biologist who was conducting aerial deer surveys in the county was able to assist in spotting and personnel transportation. Houndsmen assisted by using dogs to track the scent of lions.

Officers located one lion at the scene, shot the animal and it ran from the area. Officers tracked the mountain lion and it was euthanized. A short time later, a second mountain lion was found nearby and euthanized. It is unknown if one or multiple animals were involved in the suspected attack. According to CPW policies, wildlife involved in attacks on humans must be euthanized to ensure public safety.

CPW pathologists will perform a necropsy on the animals, checking for abnormalities and neurological diseases like rabies and avian influenza. Larimer County Coroner will release the identity of the victim and cause of death.

Mountain lion attacks on humans in Colorado are considered to be rare, with 28 previous attacks reported to CPW since 1990. The last fatal attack was in 1999.

Along the Front Range and Larimer County, hikers and people enjoying the outdoors should expect to encounter wildlife. Mountain lions are more visible in winter as they follow deer and elk to lower elevations. If lions are spotted, make noise to scare them from

the area, hold objects overhead to appear bigger and start backing away from the animal. Pets should be kept on-leash and not interact with wildlife.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has ended the active search for a third mountain lion in the area of the fatal attack on a woman on the Crosier Mountain Trail in Larimer County.

CPW officers, federal agency staff and houndsmen with trained dogs searched thoroughly for more than 72 hours. No fresh tracks or scents were detected. Crosier Mountain Trail is back open to the public, and mountain lion signage with education messages will remain. Permanent signage warning of lion activity and how to handle conflicts has been in place on the trail for years.

Any mountain lion sightings or conflicts should immediately be reported to CPW by contacting either the Denver office at 303-291-7227, the Fort Collins office at 970-472-4300 or Colorado State Patrol at *CSP (*277) to reach an on-call officer. Crosier Mountain Trail lies in mountain lion habitat.

Residents and visitors should continue to remain vigilant.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family,” said Mark Leslie, Regional Manager for CPW’s Northeast Region.

“This is a terrible tragedy. This hiker did what many people did on New Year’s Day. She went out in nature on the first day of a new year, and the fact that she did not return to her family and friends is nothing short of heartbreaking. We encourage the public to have compassion and empathy for her and her loved ones.”

CPW thanks the agencies who assisted in the initial response and search: Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office, Estes Park Police Department, Larimer County Parks and Open Space, Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department and U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services.

Necropsy results: Necropsies were performed

by CPW pathologists on two mountain lions. Initial results indicate a family group consisting of one approximately 12-month old male subadult lion and one approximately 12-month old female subadult lion in very good body condition with no signs of organ abnormalities (subadult refers to lions older than kittens but not yet to breeding age, typically breeding age is 2.5 to 3 years). Human DNA was found on all four paws of the male subadult lion. No human DNA was detected on the female subadult. Both lions tested negative for rabies. The final necropsy report has not yet been completed.

On January 1st, witnesses observed a mountain lion standing over the victim on the Crosier Mountain Trail. As they approached, they began throwing rocks to scare the lion from the area and attend to the woman. Witnesses also called 911. When officers arrived on scene, the male subadult lion approached the incident area, was shot by an officer and ran off. CPW officers on the ground and houndsmen tracked this lion and euthanized it, noting it had a wound from the earlier officer’s shot. The second lion, the female subadult, was seen in close vicinity to the site and was tracked and euthanized by CPW. Shortly after, a third lion was observed by officers approaching the incident area. This lion was also pursued by hounds but CPW officers were unable to locate it. Due to multiple lions present at the attack area and evidence found at the scene, CPW officers suspected a family group was responsible.

“It is very unlikely that these lions were in such close proximity to the scene by coincidence,” said Leslie.

“This is not a decision we take lightly.

CPW is charged with protecting human safety. Given the gravity of this situation and the rarity of this type of behavior, this was a necessary, if unfortunate action.”

Recent mountain lion activity in the Glen Haven area reported to CPW and subsequent management actions: On 10/28/2025, a man was hiking with a dog off-leash in the 2000 block of McGraw Ranch Road in Estes Park.

A mountain lion attacked and killed the dog. The incident was reported to CPW on 11/20/2025.

On 10/29/2025, a woman was hiking with her dog off-leash on West Creek Road in Larimer County. A mountain lion suddenly appeared and took her dog. The incident was reported to CPW on 10/30/2025. A CPW officer responded to the scene and was unable to locate any lions.

On 11/12/2025, a man was trail running on Crosier Mountain Trail and observed a lion in front of him in the trees. The lion approached the man but never made contact. The man success-

fully hazed the mountain lion with a tree branch and by throwing objects.

The incident was reported to CPW on 11/12/2025.

CPW officers responded to the area and were unable to locate any lions.

Mountain lions in Colorado mainly prey on deer and elk and are known to be solitary and reclusive. They are “spot and stalk” predators, often taking their prey by surprise by attacking at the neck, windpipe or skull from behind. Once lions take their prey, they will create a “cache” by covering the kill with sticks, rocks, leaves and branches to hide their meal. Lions will return to a cache over the course of several days to continue to feed. They may aggressively defend caches from any perceived threats or other predators.

“Although lions are generally solitary, it is common or typical to see family groups of a mother and offspring living and hunting together,” said CPW Mammals Researcher Mat Alldredge.

“Offspring will stay with their mother for about a year-and-a-half while learning to hunt and become independent. They are generally dependent until 18 months old when they disperse in the spring from their mother’s home range.”

Living with mountain lions: While it is not possible to remove all risk posed by mountain lions or other wildlife, there are ways to reduce the risk to people and pets. Lions can be active at any time of day or night, but they are most active dusk through dawn.

Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid wearing ear phones or other devices that limit your senses.

Recreate in groups keeping children between adults.

Keep dogs on leash. Do not let dogs outside, especially dusk through dawn, unsupervised. Use a bright light to check surroundings and make noise.

If you see a lion make a lot of noise, raise your arms to look big, back away slowly and do not run. Throw rocks or other objects at the lion.

Be prepared to fight back, a lion may be deterred if it perceives a threat.

Avoid attracting prey species such as deer or racoons to your yard, do not feed wildlife.

Remove thick bushes and low tree branches from your yard to limit cover and increase visibility.

The Plant, Audrey 2, is a character of great importance in this story, but has no lines other than those provided by the actor above, Voice of the Plant. Not getting a call back doesn’t mean that you won’t be cast.

Each person will have three minutes to perform and can extend the length of the vocals, add an additional monologue or choose a longer monologue to utilize the time.

Eugene Brave Rock is a celebrated Canadian Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) actor and storyteller from the Kainai Nation in southern Alberta, known for bringing authenticity and pride to Indigenous representation in film and television.

He first gained wide attention for his role as Chief in the blockbuster hit Wonder Woman, in which he spoke traditional Blackfoot on screen—an impactful moment of Indigenous visibility in mainstream cinema.

Raised on the Blood Tribe reserve, Eugene began acting as a teenager and

later honed his skills as a stunt performer, working on major productions like The Revenant and numerous television series. Alongside his acting career, he has continued to elevate Indigenous voices and stories.

In addition to his work on screen, Eugene is the founder of the Oki Language Project, a cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and celebrating Indigenous languages and traditions across Turtle Island. Through this work, he travels to Indigenous communities, learns from elders, and promotes cultural continuity and pride.

First Peoples Festival Film Symposium Celebrates Indigenous Stories & Filmmakers The First Peoples Festival is proud to present its Film Symposium, featuring an exceptional lineup of films that highlight the rich history, culture, and voices of Indigenous communities. Audiences will have the unique opportunity to experience these stories on the big screen and engage directly with the filmmakers and special guests.

Some of the strongest support came from current and former HP employees who had had so many wonderful memories of time at Hermit Park with friends and families. Some of these folks no longer lived in Larimer County but had moved up in the organization to some powerful management positions. Many of these folks worked quietly behind the scenes to make this deal happen. It took a lot of creativity, partnerships with other organizations, such as the Estes Valley Land Trust, and other governmental entities to put together a package that HP accepted, and the rest is history.

Since that acquisition, we moved to Estes Park and use Hermit Park Open Space frequently for camping and day use. The campgrounds are some of the best in the area. If it weren’t for the community members of Larimer County approving the Open Lands Tax, this area would have been chopped up into 35-acre parcels with McMansions, probably most as second homes for out-of-staters. Every time I visit the site, I am thankful for saving this wonderful outdoor treasure.

Q: Is there a memory or moment from your time with LCDNR that stands out as especially powerful, either personally or for the community?

A: The protection of Red Mountain Ranch is another highlight of the system. Also, the preservation of Long View Farm Open Space, guaranteeing some open space separation between Loveland and Fort Collins, was another key important acquisition.

I also greatly appreciate the dedication to not just acquisition, but to wise stewardship of these lands as well. I remember several discussions when I was County Manager about the mix of spending on acquiring new properties vs. maintaining the properties we have.

Acquiring and protecting property is important, but with acquisition comes the moral responsibility to protect and manage those properties as well. I believe the County Open Lands Program has done a great job with that balance.

Q: How have you seen Larimer County residents, families, or visitors

benefit from the protection, restoration, and enjoyment of open spaces?

A: I see this all the time. Certainly, in the Estes Valley, Hermit Park Open Space comes to mind. Its campgrounds and trails are used all the time by locals.

Although we have the National Park in our backyard, Hermit Park Open Space is heavily used by the locals and is usually less crowded. It is unique in the Estes Valley in that its trails are dog friendly and mountain bike friendly, both activities that are prohibited in the National Park.

Q: What message would you want to share with future generations about why conserving and stewarding lands in Larimer County is important?

A: Preserving key open lands for the enjoyment of the residents, ecological protection, and the overall quality of our natural environment is fundamental to why most of us live in this area. In 50 years, no one will look at our county and say, “I’m so glad we developed that empty open space land for houses and industry,” but they will look back and thank the previous generations and say, “I’m so grateful they had the foresight to protect these unique and special places.”

“We’ve come a long way from the days where we had to beg for a few hundred dollars to buy materials and count on volunteer labor to just chink a cabin to the wonderful Open Lands Program we now can be so proud of. As the baton is passed to future generations of citizens and leaders, let’s make sure the progress continues for generations to come.”

Guest speakers will be Business Development Advisor Kelsea Bigelow and Care Manager Becky Boynton from Home Instead, serving Larimer and Weld Counties. Boynton also serves as the territory manager for Estes Park clients.

During the presentation, attendees will learn about the range of services Home Instead offers, including per-

sonal care, Alzheimer’s and dementia support, hospice assistance, light housekeeping, and more. The speakers will explain eligibility requirements, how care plans are structured, visit frequency, and an overview of costs and coverage options.

The Peak-to-Peak concert series is pleased to present Winter Winds featuring the Highland Brass quintet and the Pinehaven Clarinet Ensemble. The concert will be held Saturday, January 24th at 2 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Trail. The Peak to Peak concert series is sponsored by the Oratorio Society of Estes Park. The concert is free (though donations are appreciated), and a reception to meet the performers will follow. The music will be lively and varied, ranging from classical to folk, jazz, and movie favorites!

The Highland Brass, Estes Park’s own brass quintet, has been performing in concerts and special events in Estes Park and surrounding communities for more than 30 years.

All quintet members perform with the Estes Park Village Band and other performing ensembles in the Estes Park area and along the Front Range of Colorado. Members of the Highland

Brass are: Dave Scott, trumpet and flugelhorn; Neil Johnson, trumpet and flugelhorn; Jerry Brubaker, horn; Curtis Fox, trombone; Chuck Varilek, tuba; and Mark Vasel, percussion. The Highland Brass performs a wide variety of music: marches, ragtime, and jazz. We are especially proud to include arrangements by our own Jerry Brubaker.

The Pinehaven clarinet ensemble is composed of the Village Band clarinet section and friends. The ensemble has been performing for ten years. The Pinehaven name reflects that the group regularly performs at the Pinehaven resort during summer evenings, with performances open to all. Members performing at this concert include Madeline Alt, Randy Amen, Annette Dechant, Kristi Fjare, Joan Hansen, Susan Harris, Wendy Koenig, and Jan Scott.

The holidays are over and the Estes Park Woman’s Club is back in action.

On Saturday, January 10th, the “oldest philanthropic organization in Estes Park” presents Brad Fitch in a concert entitled “Songwriters of the Seventies.”

Artists such as James Taylor, The Eagles, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, and John Denver will be represented in a concert presented at the Estes Park High School Auditorium with doors opening at 6 p.m. The ladies of the Woman’s Club have been baking up a storm and crafting items for donation that will be available prior to the concert, during intermission and following the last song.

Brad Fitch has generously offered to help the organization replenish their scholarship fund so funds raised by ticket sales go to scholarships while baked items and craft donations will help to replenish the Club’s revenue for philanthropic projects all over town.

Please plan to use cash or checks for donations made for the baked items and crafts. The beautiful wreaths and table decorations that member Pam Leitner is famous for will be available and other members will be furnishing wild flower books, stenciled bags of all kinds and wine bags, homemade cards, crafted jewelry, and other items. Don’t Break The Bank On Valentine’s Day In the 1989 film, “When Harry Met Sally,” Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan discuss their love lives over sandwiches at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City.

At that time, Harry’s pastrami sandwich and Sally’s turkey sandwich each cost about $12. Today, if Harry and Sally met again at Katz’s to talk about their grandchildren, each of their sandwiches would be close to $30. Times change, prices rise, but love will always be with us, so on this Valentine’s Day, enjoy the time you share with your beloved — but be careful about how much you spend.

For starters, a Valentine’s Day celebration can be costly. On average, individual Americans will spend $180 on their valentines this year, according to Drive Research — and, as a result, about a third took on new credit card debt.

Of course, $180, by itself, won’t put you in a debt crisis (though you may spend much more than that). And if you pay your card off each month, you won’t incur interest — plus, depending on your card, you may earn points and cash back. Unfortunately, though, many of us don’t pay our cards in full each month and end up paying interest, sometimes at a high rate. To avoid this situation, consider these steps: • Establish a budget — for all celebrations. Valentine’s Day isn’t the only celebration or holiday for which you’ll spend money on gifts. You’ve also got birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other special days. Together, these events can add up to a lot of money, which is why you should set a budget for each celebration — and stick to it.

• Create a “celebration fund.” If you haven’t set aside any money for a celebration, you may well end up putting it

all on your credit card. So, why not set up a “celebration fund?” Each month, move some money from your checking or savings account into a fund that you don’t use for everyday expenses. You don’t have to move a lot of money, because over time you should be able to accumulate enough to pay for those special days. And when you get a windfall, such as a tax refund or a yearend bonus, you might also put some of that money into your celebration fund.

• Consider your priorities when making gifts. Whether it’s a dinner out, or a dozen roses, or any other present you give for Valentine’s Day — or other celebrations — you’ll want your gift to be meaningful. At the same time, you should always think of other priorities.

For example, if you and your partner or spouse are saving for something like a down payment on a home or a long vacation, your contributions to these goals will have a big impact on your future happiness. This isn’t to say you should forego gifts for Valentine’s Day or other occasions — but you should realize that if you spend lavishly on these celebrations, there’s a trade-off involved — i.e., less money for your longer-term goals.

Ultimately, there’s no price tag on love — however you spend your time with loved ones on Valentine’s Day or other special occasions will be appreciated, no matter how much, or how little, money is involved. But by placing these celebrations within the context of your overall financial plans, you may be able to enjoy them even more.

Getting Down To The Wire In a world where we now feel a daily overload of bad news, we focus on the good in life, even during tough times.

I’ve got the after-holidays blahs. I ate far too much sugar at Christmas and drank one glass too many on New Year’s Eve. I don’t feel like doing a thing except watching Turner Classic Movies. Last night (Saturday), TCM aired three classic science fiction films from the 1950s in a row, and I watched two of them. I skipped the one about the 50-foot woman chasing her cheating husband because it was the third movie and I was too sleepy.

But it wasn’t a big deal because Attack of the 50 Foot Woman had been a favorite after-school movie of mine that I watched far too many times.

It’s Sunday morning, and the wind is howling again. Instead of turning on the TV or taking the dogs for a walk, I’m researching products in the online Alzheimer’s store for when we open the Estes Dementia Day Center. Their website features several interesting and unusual products that, when you think about it, tell a lot about dementia. Basic safety products on their site include refrigerator and cabinet locks, door alarm monitors, step stools with handrails for getting in and out of bed or the bath, and motion-sensor lights.

One item I think is brilliant is a peeland-stick door mural of a red brick wall with green vines climbing up the sides. It’s much prettier than a stop sign banner across the outside door would be.

There are tactile and sensory objects for fidgeters to keep hands busy: fidget widgets and marble mazes.

Comfort items like animated robotic dogs and cats are available that woof, meow, purr, and even breathe, according to the website. There are little wooden churches that play hymns, and you can buy flash drives full of golden oldies. Clocks of all kinds are available, including ones that indicate whether it’s day or night. Games of all kinds, too, including puzzles, activity cubes, coloring books, memory boxes, and cognitive skill-building tools, can be had. My absolutely favorite items are called “Life Stations”: wooden tables with a setback for holding tools of the trade. There are Life Stations for gardeners, handymen, or even fishermen and women. Unfortunately, those items are extremely expensive. But I can visualize where we set them up, and I can picture the delight on someone’s

face standing in front of one.

Why am I going on about all this?

Last week, I was writing the Employee Handbook, which was really boring but had to be done. So much of what we’re doing now at what I call the Dementia Project is paperwork that needs to be ready to open the doors for any nonprofit. The Employee Handbook is a good example because we can’t hire employees until it's ready as it has to be signed off on.

There are exciting things, of course, like hiring a new executive director (more on that next week, hopefully), but mostly it’s paperwork. The things that have to be done before we open.

Since we are heading quickly toward our opening date this quarter, we have to get it all done fast. This week’s todo list for me includes attending three afternoon meetings, finishing the policies and procedures manual, and making a list of needed items like two desks, two laptops, one bookcase, tables and chairs for our guests…

Well, you get it. The executive director and program manager will need chairs for their office, plus staplers, scissors, pens, and pencils. A landline phone! We will really need that. We will also need some of the items I listed above from the Alzheimer’s Store website. But the Program Manager will take care of ordering those things.

Sometimes a person gets bogged down in the minutiae of it all. That’s how I was feeling today. I forgot what all this work is for. I have to remember it’s the people. The ones with dementia and the ones who care for them. Both need this center. Both will get this center. And very soon now.

Then I’ll celebrate, give thanks, and laugh. Oh, how I will laugh – and probably cry a bit, too. We’ll have Open Houses and what they call Soft Openings. We’ll welcome our guests lovingly and say to others, “Goodbye now, caregiver. You go do something nice for yourself. Your loved one will be safe here.”

And now I have to stop writing. I’m having lunch with our new IT person at my house, and we’re going to update the Estes Dementia Day Center’s website, between bites of my killer vegan chili. None of our team is very computer savvy, so we have a lot of updating to do.

Happy New Year! I just know it’s going to be a good one.

The Epiphany St. Francis Of Assisi Anglican Church Epiphany is an odd word. It has several interpretations. In more modern times, it seems to describe that moment of clarity when something make sense or begins to make sense. Sometimes, it is an emotional feeling akin to

“For snow and rain in due season.”

The Epiphany, or the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, we celebrated at Saint Francis Anglican Church we celebrated last Tuesday on January 6th.

and retuned the church to its beautiful simplicity.
