Business Retention and Expansion is another cornerstone of the Council’s work. The 2026 plan includes expanding programs to provide training— both broad and tailored—while creating supportive networking opportunities where business owners can share ideas, solve challenges, and thrive through shared experiences and partnership.

Kraft went deeper into discussing partnerships stating that “partnerships are the force multipliers of economic development.” The EDWC currently works with 13 community and statewide partners including the Small Business Development Center which brings coaching and classes directly to local operators, and the Economic Development Council of Colorado which connects local folks with communities facing similar challenges and opportunities to learn from shared experiences.

Kraft concluded her presentation with a question: What makes a community thrive?

“The answer,” she said, “is simple—it’s all of us, working together.”

Third Annual First Peoples Festival Celebrates Indigenous Culture In Estes Park January 17-18, 2026 at the Estes Park Events Complex The First Peoples Festival will return to Estes Park January 17th and 18th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Estes Park Events Complex, 1125 Rooftop Way. This annual event brings together Indigenous communities, residents, and visitors to celebrate and honor Native American cultures through art, music, dance, film, fashion, and storytelling. This is a free festival for all.

The festival will feature an Indigenous vendors and artists Marketplace, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship from prestigious Native artists representing 15 different federally recognized tribes. The First Peoples Festival began with this marketplace at its core and continues to welcome outstanding Native artists year after year. The vendor selection includes master silversmiths, pottery artists, painters, ledger artists, and other Indigenous creatives offering finely crafted handmade jewelry, original artwork, contemporary and traditional clothing, and distinctive cultural goods.

A cornerstone of the festival is the First Peoples Friendship Powwow, featuring Indigenous dancers and drummers in full regalia. The powwow reflects the cultural and spiritual significance of these traditions and will take place in the Pavilion behind the Events Center.

Grand Entries are scheduled for Saturday, January 17th at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, January 18th at noon.

The First Peoples Fashion Show takes place Saturday, January 17th, 2026, at the Estes Park Events Center. This groundbreaking event will celebrate and amplify Indigenous designers, models, and artists, providing a powerful platform for their creativity and cultural heritage. Designers from across North America will present collections that blend traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, telling stories through every thread and design. Tickets for the fashion show are available at eventsinestes.com/first-peoples-festival.

The festival will also feature an Indigenous Film Symposium at the Estes Valley Community Center 660 Community Dr.

Screenings will include Remaining Native, The Salmon People, and Untold Valor, followed by opportunities for audience questions and discussion with the directors. Screening times are Saturday, January 17th at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., and Sunday, January 18th at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

We are honored to have Mariah Gladstone from Indigikitchen as our keynote speaker on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.

Mariah Gladstone is the founder of Indigikitchen, a digital platform focused on revitalizing Indigenous foodways through traditional recipes and ancestral ingredients. An enrolled member of the Blackfeet and Cherokee Nations, she is a chef and food sovereignty advocate dedicated to reconnecting communities with culturally rooted, healthy Indigenous diets.

The First Peoples Festival provides an important opportunity for Indigenous communities to gather on their lands and for visitors to learn about, engage with, and support Native American cultures, artists, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs.

Shape Effective Management Strategies For Wetlands & Moose Populations In RMNP Rocky Mountain National Park staff are beginning a new planning effort to address the decline of wetlands and the growing impact of moose populations on these sensitive ecosystems.

The National Park Service invites you to participate in shaping effective management strategies for wetlands and moose populations in Rocky Mountain National Park. In January, the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment will officially launch Healthier Together: Larimer County’s Public Health Podcast.

Designed with our community in mind, this podcast will help our team connect with the community in a more accessible and human way. By meeting people where they are, we hope to make public health information easier to engage with. The podcast will let us break down complex topics in a friendly, conversational format, share the expertise from within our department, and highlight the important work of our community partners.

Starting in January, listeners can expect a handful of short mini-episodes each month, along with one or two longer conversations that take them behind the scenes of public health in Larimer County. Staff will share their “field notes,” provide updates, answer questions, and help showcase the depth and heart of the work happening across LCDHE. In 2026, Healthier Together will be available wherever you listen to podcasts. We want to hear from you! We would greatly value your input to help guide the development of our new podcast. Larimer County Offices Holiday Closures All Larimer County Administrative Services, Courts, District Attorney, Ranch Offices, and Landfill are closed on January 1st, 2026, to celebrate the New Year's holiday. Larimer County Administrative Services, and the Dis-

trict Attorney remain closed on January 2nd, 2026. The Landfill and Courts will be open January 2nd, 2026.

Critical county services are not disrupted by closures.

Town Prepares For April 7th Municipal Election; Candidate Forum Scheduled For January 6th The Town of Estes Park will hold the next regular Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 7th, 2026 to elect three trustee seats on the Board of Trustees. Voters will determine who will occupy seats currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Marie Cenac, Trustees Bill Brown and Kirby Hazelton. Mayor Pro Tem Cenac is term limited. The other two Trustees are eligible to run for one of the three four-year terms.

For individuals who are interested in learning more about becoming a candidate, the Town Clerk will offer a candidate information forum on January 6th, 2026 at 6 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, at 170 MacGregor Ave. This forum will include a review of the candidate packet, including candidate eligibility, nomination instructions, the nomination petition, Fair Campaign Practices Act instructions, expectations of time commitment and the role of a Board member.

Registered electors 18 years of age or older may be a candidate and hold office if they have resided in-

side Town limits for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding April 7th, 2026. Candidate packets will be available at the Town Clerk’s office, Room 130 of Town Hall on or after January 6th, 2026 and nomination petitions may be circulated beginning the same day.

The petition must be signed by at least 10 registered electors who reside inside Town limits. The filing deadline for nomination petitions is January 26th, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Additional important dates for candidates: February 2nd: Last day to file a Write-In Candidate Affidavit.

February 2nd: Last day for a candidate to withdraw from the election.

April 7th: Election Day April 28th: Swearing-in of newly elected Town Trustees at the Town Board meeting.

Sledding Conditions At Hidden Valley In RMNP

Thinking about going sledding in Rocky? Currently, sledding conditions in Rocky Mountain National Park at Hidden Valley are very poor. There has been little recent snow accumulation at Hidden Valley and the wind has blown some recent snow off the sledding hill.

Most of the sledding hill is bare, with rocks and vegetation exposed. The snow on the sledding hill is hard packed and icy.

Before going sledding, have a plan for how to slow down and how to stop.

When sledding, it is advised to sled feet-first down the hill for your safety.

For your safety, the Hidden Valley Sledding Hill is the only place in Rocky Mountain National Park where sledding is allowed. Hidden Valley is located on the east side of the park and accessed via Trail Ridge Road, about 7 miles from the Fall River and Beaver Meadows Entrance Stations.

The sledding hill is unstaffed. There are no tow facilities at Hidden Valley and there are no rentals available for

sleds or tubes inside the park. Plastic sleds, tubes and saucers can be rented or purchased in communities outside of RMNP. Sleds with metal runners are not allowed to be used on the sledding hill.

The walking path from the Hidden Valley parking area to the base of the sledding hill is hard packed and icy.

When walking from the Hidden Valley Parking Area to the sledding hill, traction devices are helpful.

above sea level, Hidden Valley can be very windy and cold. Flush restrooms are open daily. The Warming Hut may be open limited hours on weekends.

Make sure you are prepared for the conditions and dress warmly.

Peak-To-Peak Concert Series Presents Winter Winds January 24th

The Peak-to-Peak concert series is pleased to present Winter Winds featuring the Highland Brass quintet and the Pinehaven Clarinet Ensemble. The concert will be held Saturday, January 24th at 2 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Trail. The Peak-to-Peak concert series is sponsored by the Oratorio Society of Estes Park. The concert is free (though donations are appreciated), and a reception to meet the performers will follow. The music will be lively and varied, ranging from classical to folk, jazz, and movie favorites!

The Highland Brass, Estes Park’s own brass quintet, has been performing in concerts and special events in Estes Park and surrounding communities for more than 30 years.

All quintet members perform with the Estes Park Village Band and other performing ensembles in the Estes Park area and along the Front Range of Colorado. Members of the Highland Brass are: Dave Scott, trumpet and flu-

gelhorn; Neil Johnson, trumpet and flugelhorn; Jerry Brubaker, horn; Curtis Fox, trombone; Chuck Varilek, tuba; and Mark Vasel, percussion. The Highland Brass performs a wide variety of music: marches, ragtime, and jazz. We are especially proud to include arrangements by our own Jerry Brubaker.

The Pinehaven clarinet ensemble is composed of the Village Band clarinet section and friends. The ensemble has been performing for ten years. The Pinehaven name reflects that the group regularly performs at the Pinehaven resort during summer evenings, with performances open to all. Members performing at this concert include Madeline Alt, Randy Amen, Annette Dechant, Kristi Fjare, Joan Hansen, Susan Harris, Wendy Koenig, and Jan Scott.

Special performers will be joining both ensembles: Julie Varilek, piano Mark Vasel, percussion.

I was in the produce aisle looking for broccoli. When I found it I was shocked at the price. In the not so distant past I could buy broccoli on sale for oh, maybe $1.50 a pound.

Not anymore.

Broccoli was $4.99 a pound today.

(And most of it was trunk, not treetop. The farmer doesn’t make any more money by selling me the thick, woody stalk. I say, just chop off the trunk and sell me treetops please.)

It’s not only broccoli that has shot up in price. Everything in the store is outrageous. It used to be you could save a lot by shopping only in the perimeter aisle where the healthiest foods reside.

But nowadays, everything is expensive.

Bread, broccoli, beans, bacon, botatoes.

I walked over to the guy stacking lettuce into a pyramid. “I know you don’t have anything to do with the cost of the

produce you handle.”

He paused, a head of lettuce in his plastic-gloved hand, and looked at me with mild trepidation. I went on. “I came here to buy broccoli but I absolutely refuse to pay those prices,” I pointed in the direction of the broccoli.

He looked toward the broccoli, then back at me, unaffected.

“I have two choices, I guess,” said I. “I can go hungry or go broke.” I waited for his reaction.

Slowly, he placed the lettuce on top of the pile of other lettuce heads. “Gas used to be nineteen cents a gallon, too.”

He was right. Back in 1965.

I’m not complaining that broccoli doesn’t cost the same as it did when I was five years old. (Not that we ate broccoli back then. If it didn’t come in a can, we didn’t eat it. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen broccoli in a can, then or now. Thank goodness.) I’m upset that grocery shopping is painful these days and I didn’t vote for life to be

Know what else? I had an antique mirror in a gold frame I bought at a sale at the William James home 15 to 20 years ago. (James built the historic Elkhorn Lodge in 1874.) I donated the gilded mirror to the thrift store yesterday because I didn’t want anything gold in my house. It reminded me of the recent addition of excessive garish gold that is tastelessly adorning every spare space in the White House and I could’t stand to look at it anymore.

That may sound political but it’s not.

I would have let the gold-framed mirror go no matter who put up all that gluttonous, gaudy gold in the White House.

The year 2025 wasn’t as bad as 2020, when COVID changed every life on the planet, but it wasn’t all light and laughter either. That year is behind us now and it’s time for a reset. We get to start over with 2026. Life is way too short to spend energy on negative thoughts. (That’s why I got rid of the gold-framed mirror.) We must do all

we can to make 2026 a good year full of grace and mercy and generosity and forgiveness.

(By the way, Santa Joe not only gave me new slippers for Christmas, he gave me the Dyson vacuum cleaner I’ve dreamed of for years. You should see the amount of *stuff* this vacuum is pulling out of rugs I’ve been vacuuming for years. It’s an amazing machine that is multi-talented; I think it can even do my taxes.

Joe has been telling people that he can’t hardly get me to put the vacuum down. Every time he turns around, he says, I’m vacuuming someplace new. In reply, I say I’m going to give my new Dyson a pillow and a place next to me in bed. He laughs along with me but I think he may be worried.)

Skijor Returns To Estes Park January 23-25, 2026 groundwork exercises that teach the horse to ignore distractions and stay focused. Next, the horse learns to tolerate the presence of ropes and skiers moving around and behind them. A great way to get them comfortable is by practicing with a dummy skier or sled, gradually adding more speed until they’re accustomed to the feel and sounds associated with pulling.

For the rider, balance, control, and strong communication with the horse are key. The rider undergoes additional riding drills focused on refining steering skills and maintaining a hard pace.

To prepare, skiers often practice their balance, quick directional changes, and jumps to stay in control while tethered to a horse. They need to be comfortable using hand grips and working with ropes, as they’ll rely on both to maneuver. Some skiers prepare by training in ski parks or with other motorized pulls, like snowmobiles, to simulate the speed and resistance they’ll experience in skijoring.

Skijor is a unique competition where skiers are towed at high speeds by horse and rider teams, navigating

It is said to have originated as a mode of winter travel, however now it is primarily a competitive sport.

Estes Park has a long-standing connection to skiing through Hidden Valley, once the town’s popular ski resort within Rocky Mountain National Park.

For decades, Hidden Valley drew skiers from all over, making it a vibrant hub for winter sports until its closure. Christmas Bird Count Next Sunday, January 4th

The annual RMNP, Estes Park Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday, January 4th, 2026. Interested participants should meet at the Estes Park Visitor Center at 8 a.m. Participants will be separated into small groups and move within designated areas inside the count circle and count every bird they see or hear, making sure not to count the same bird twice.

We will be meeting at the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library at 1 p.m. for lunch and a preliminary tally to see what areas of the circle have been counted and which ones will still need to be covered.

Common species expected to be seen during the count include Black-billed Magpies, American Crows, Common Ravens, Cassin’s Finches, House Finches, House Sparrow, Rock Pigeons, Red-shafted Flickers, Hairy Woodpeckers, American Dipper, European Starling, Evening Grosbeak, all three species of Rosy-finches, Pine Grosbeaks and Canada Jays.

Species that we are hoping to see on the count day include Northern Pygmy-Owls, Great Horned Owls, Northern Saw-whet Owls, Northern Goshawks, Red Crossbills, Bohemian Waxwings, Common Redpolls and Red Crossbills.

Everyone is welcome to participate. If you are new to birding, we can place you with someone who is a bit more knowledgeable. Furthermore, anyone with bird feeders on their property can simply watch the feeders through the day and count the birds seen. Estes Park Woman's Club Benefit Concert January 10th, 2026

On January 10th, 2026, with doors opening at 6 p.m., the Estes Park Woman’s Club is presenting Brad Fitch in concert at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. Brad has graciously agreed to help the Woman’s Club raise money for their Scholarship Program.

Every year, the Estes Park Woman’s Club honors two young women graduating from Estes Park High School with a scholarship worth over two thousand dollars. In order to do this, the Estes Park Woman’s Club takes donations, sponsors a Trunk Treasures Sale in July and has many members offer their craft and baking skills to help fill their scholarship coffers. This year, the organization is sponsoring Brad Fitch in a concert entitled “Songwriters of the Seventies,” a show he has not done for some time. Song writers such as Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, The Eagles, James Taylor, and John Denver will be featured.

Tickets are $35 and are available from any Woman’s Club member and at Macdonald’s Bookstore.

Prior to the concert and immediately after, the Woman’s Club will do what they do best…offer up their wonderful baked goods and craft items for donation. The club figures that if they can build a library, buy city property, contribute to our schools’ needs, come to the financial rescue of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park like they do, surely Estes Park residents will help them continue their philanthropic programs.

So make an evening of hearing Estes’s own local song bird, Brad Fitch, in concert singing the songs that defined a decade. Songs and service go handin-hand on January 10th. Come be a part of this fabulous concert that will help so many to finance their dreams.

Calling all Plein Air artists! Estes Valley Plein Air, a National Juried Show, will be accepting applications through

Online Juried Shows (OnlineJuriedShows.com) for our 2026 season beginning January 2nd through April 5th.

Open to any artist using oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel or gouache. Participating artists must paint from life, on location. Studio work is not allowed. To be considered for participation in this event, artists must submit three images (required) representative of their best plein air work and pay a non-refundable $60 jury fee by the entry deadline.

The Art Center of Estes Park has been sponsoring this event since 2018, taking up the tradition established by the former Cultural Arts Council’s Plein Air Rockies over 30 years ago. Lars Sage was a staff person with the Cultural Arts Council, assisting in the Plein Air Rockies program and after the closing of CAC, wrote a proposal for the Art Center to continue this event. Estes Valley Plein Air will begin August 18th with registration. Highlights of activities include Quick Paint August 22nd at Riverside Plaza, a 90minute paint out with an auction to follow. August 25th will be a Group Paint Out at MacGregor Ranch. A Gala Opening and Awards Ceremony will take place on August 28th with the Exhibit running through September 28th.

Where The Moose Roam

Moose have intrigued me since the early 1980s when I had my first close encounter on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Maybe it’s the size, a thousand pounds plus of long, lanky legs, thick bodies, camel faces, and an expression with an intimidating glare, especially if they take exception to your presence.

So in December 2025, I ventured to Grand Teton National Park in search of the massive land beasts - Shiras moose. I had a Canon R5 mirrorless camera, a 100-500 mm lens and a 600 mm prime lens with a 2x extender that could keep me safe while bringing moose up-close and personal through the camera’s viewfinder.

Other photographers had shared that moose in the Tetons like to forage in winter among the bitterbrush plants.

Apparently, they gather in lower elevation areas and sagebrush flats where the wind keeps the snow shallower, exposing their main winter food, bitterbrush.

After a comforting drive diagonally across Wyoming where antelope grazed along the fence lines, I drove the mesmerizing mountains over Togwotee Pass. Arriving in the Grand Teton National Park, I began my search for the massive ungulates.

To my wonder, almost immediately I found moose. Black spots among the sage green and brown, they were a half mile into fields filled with bitterbrush. Their heads were

down, their antlers barely visible among the brush, as they ate their favorite winter shrub.

I pulled off the side of the road, amazed that there were actually big, beautiful bull moose visible like boulders in a wheat field. Through my viewfinder, I was impressed with the details but wished they were closer. As the sun set over the massive peaks to the west, their dark bodies glowed around the edges - back lit.

The next morning I was out at sunrise, and so were the moose. I relished the morning light, brightening their dark winter coats with the fur edges glowing gold. Their antlers, free of velvet, were

light tan with long, pointy tines, the color contrary to their dark coats.

My camera in hand, zoom lens attached, I knelt low in the sagebrush. The lower I was the more dynamic the moose appeared rising above the old west prairie. I saw the image, and clicked the shutter. A ground of sage and tan was the setting bringing forward the dark gray-brown of an intimidating antlered bull moose.

There were two here, three there. Where one group grazed another three lay digesting their breakfast, hints of impressive antlers peaking out above the sage. It wasn’t just the moose, it was the setting. Flatlands of wandering moose feeding before the towering, sharp peaks the Native Americans Shoshones called “Teewinot” meaning many pinnacles.

It was on the third day that the moment happened. Water traversing the natural meadow drew the moose in. Driving, I crested a small rise to see an impressive bull nearing the water’s edge on the far shore. Then, I could see behind a clump of prairie grass a calm, massive, mellow bull resting. I knew once he stood, he would be frightening in his size and the glare of his eye.

I captured images, one after another.

Then I saw a third bull, smaller but feisty

moving directly across the field toward the water. As he did, the most impressive animal stood to a awe-inspiring size.

To me, it would be ice cold. To the moose it was refreshing, and they drank.

Revived, they exited the water moving toward the group of photographers where I stood. Skilled in our own movement, we backed away while capturing shots at the same time. How we walked backwards through the tangled web of bitterbrush while looking through a tiny viewfinder and pushing the shutter to capture special pictures was a talent in itself.

Moving behind my vehicle, I lowered my camera watching them. Dark spots in a field had become towering animals with powerful chests and daring antlers of imposing paddles. The largest bull’s antler spread exceeded forty-five inches with long tines extending from their paddles.

As they moved, I captured their actions. Then one bull turned to the west, the sunlight brightening his winter coat as he did, and the pointed peaks of the snow covered Tetons rose up behind him.

I took the classic shot. The white covered Tetons were a backdrop to the prairie sagebrush surrounding him, and one bold, impressive moose dominated in the foreground. More than a moose picture, it was a dynamic scene capturing nature’s incredible beauty.

An Incredible Journey: From Hope To Happy New Year

For all of the differences between her birthplace and Estes Park—including an elevation gain of about a mile—they share one vital characteristic: kindness.

“Paraguay is a place known for its warmth, of its people as much as its weather,” said Miller. “It’s a country where tereré, a traditional iced tea, is shared from one person to another as a gesture of friendship and connection.

When Miller arrived in Estes Park in 2021, she was impressed by its strong sense of community and the warm welcome she received from its residents, including the staff of EVICS itself.

“My journey to Estes Park began, like so many others, with hope — hope for opportunity and for a safe place to raise my children during the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic. We sought a fresh start and a community where our family could grow and belong. The beauty of these mountains first caught my heart, but it was the people who made this valley feel like home.

EVICS provided Miller with the same sense of belonging and togetherness that she had left behind in Paraguay and inspired her to join its efforts to serve families in need in the Estes Valley.

“I still remember my early days here — learning, adjusting, and realizing that while this is one of the most breathtaking places in the world, it can also be one of the most challenging for working families trying to balance the cost of living, child care, and stability.

When I first joined EVICS, I didn’t know how deeply this work would shape me. The first time I helped a woman find employment, I went home with tears in my eyes. Soon after, I helped another family, and then another. Each story was different — but the emotion was the same: relief, hope, and gratitude. I began to see how one connection, one act of support, can ripple through an entire community.

The celebration of the holidays in Estes and approach of a new year prompt Miller to reminisce about her life’s journey and ponder the future.

“In Paraguay, New Year’s was a warm, joyful tradition. We ate together as a family, and when midnight arrived, we said “Felicidades!” and everyone stepped out into the street to greet our neighbors. Because the New Year’s holiday occurs during the summer in the southern hemisphere, it’s a cultural tradition to go outside and celebrate together. We lived close to relatives— nieces, cousins, aunts, and uncles—so we all walked to my grandmother’s house, where the whole family gathered to watch fireworks and spend time together. It was a beautiful mix of family, community, and celebration that I still hold close to my heart.

“For me, the transition from one year to another symbolizes renewal—a chance to reflect, realign, and step forward with clarity and purpose. Each new year feels like an open door.”

The beginning of a new year will also herald a renewed effort by EVICS to help strengthen and support Estes Valley families via the provision of affordable childcare, mental health support, parenting resources, and youth programs.

“I look forward to continued growth for EVICS—strengthening our programs, deepening our community partnerships, and expanding the ways we support families. We will be more strategic, more proactive, and more sustainably structured. Local conservation and wildlife photographer Deena Sveinsson received an Honorable Mention in the 2025 National Wildlife Magazine Photo Contest in the Baby Animals Category for her photograph, “A7's Twins.”

The annual contest, now in its 54th year, received nearly 30,000 submissions from more than 3,200 photographers across the United States and around the world. The winning images highlight the diversity and majesty of wildlife, plants and landscapes from across the globe.

“I am delighted that my moose photograph of deceased celebrity moose A7 and her twin calves, can bring joy to many people,” said Deena. “This photograph is so special since this was taken many years ago in Rocky Mountain National Park, and shows celebrity moose Poppy as a baby calf.”

Estes Park Archives Program This Saturday, January 3rd The Fall River entrance gate to Rocky Mountain National Park (originally the most popular entrance choice, also referred to as the Fall River Gateway) had three different locations between the time the park was created in 1915 and the first time a $1 per car per season entrance fee was implemented in May 1939.

What was the need for an entrance gate when no fee to enter was being charged? Why were locations for these substantial and seemingly costly entrance gates so impermanent?

The Estes Park Archives will present a 45-minute program on the early history of the Fall River Gateway this Saturday, January 3rd, beginning at 1 p.m.

at the headquarters at 240 Moraine Avenue. Slides and show and tell photos for pass-around examination will be part of the study. There is no charge to enter (or leave), and light refreshments consisting of leftover holiday cookies will be served.

Parking near the meeting space this time of year is ample and free, and no reservations or memberships are required. Call 586-4889 for directions or more information.

King Of Hearts By: Larry Strong

“Let the King of my heart be the mountain where I run, the fountain I drink from, Oh, He is my song. Let the King of my heart be the shadow where I hide, the ransom for my life, Oh, He is my song.” (Bethel Music) As you read this, you may be a person who many consider having a “heart of gold.” Hopefully, you are not a “hard hearted” person with a “heart of stone.” Perhaps, you are “pure of heart,” a person of good character.

Or, you “wear your heart on your sleeve” making it easy for others to know your feelings.

For certain, you may find yourself in a situation where your “heart is broken.”

Or you’re close to “losing heart” wondering how much more you can take. My encouragement for you is—TAKE HEART! My “heart to heart” message is simple.

Someone or something is the king of your heart. But is it the King? What fountain do you drink from? What song do you sing? Whose shadow do you hide under when things get tough?

Is it Thae King?

Have you poured out your heart to the King of Kings, Prince of Peace and Lord of Lords? You know, the One Whose birthday we celebrated last week? He may have come into this world not looking like much. But He

Why The Most Important Thing On Your Calendar Should Be…Nothing There’s a reason I always coach my clients to schedule their rest first.

Not last. Not “if there’s time.” Not “once everything else is handled.” First.

Because when rest, play, and downtime don’t get intentionally placed on the calendar, they get pushed off entirely—like a cat slowly shoving a vase off the counter while making direct eye contact with you. You see it happening.

You know exactly what’s coming. And somehow, you still don’t stop it.

Rest works the same way.

Most of us genuinely believe we’ll slow down after things settle. After the holidays. After the deadline. After the kids’ schedules calm down. After the busy season at work. After we finally get our act together.

But “after” is a moving target. There is always one more thing.

I see this across the board. The working parent who hasn’t taken a full day off in months because someone always needs something. The small business owner who feels guilty resting when there’s still money to be made. The retiree who stays constantly busy because slowing down feels unsettling. The caretaker who can’t imagine prioritizing themselves without feeling selfish.

Different lives. Same pattern.

And the cost adds up.

We like to think of rest as a reward— something you earn once you’ve been productive enough, responsible enough, disciplined enough. But biologically speaking, that logic is backward.

Rest isn’t a reward. It’s a requirement.

Your nervous system depends on it.

Your brain consolidates learning during rest. Your immune system repairs itself during downtime. Creativity, emotional regulation, and problemsolving all improve when you’re not running on fumes.

Without rest, everything starts to feel harder than it needs to be. Motivation drops. Patience thins. Small problems feel enormous. Goals that once mattered begin to feel like burdens. (*Queue the New Year’s resolution burnout.) And then we blame our-

selves for being “unmotivated” or “off ” when really, we’re just exhausted.

Even God, so the story goes, rested on the seventh day. And I feel pretty confident saying he wasn’t being lazy.

Rest doesn’t always mean lying on the couch (though sometimes it absolutely does). It can look like taking a walk without turning it into a workout. Sitting outside without scrolling. Laughing with people who know the real you.

Doing something purely because it’s enjoyable, not because it’s productive.

Taking a day off before you hit burnout instead of waiting until you’re forced to stop.

It also means protecting your downtime like it matters—because it does.

When rest lives only in the margins of your life, it’s the first thing to go. When it’s treated as optional, it becomes negotiable. And when it’s negotiable, it disappears.

So here’s the gentle challenge: Put rest on the calendar the same way you would a meeting, an appointment, or a responsibility you wouldn’t cancel without good reason. Decide ahead of time that it matters. Because if you don’t decide, life will decide for you— and it rarely chooses rest.

This isn’t about doing less for the sake of doing less. It’s about recognizing that sustainable health, meaningful growth, and genuine enjoyment of your life require periods of pause. You can’t be “on” all the time and expect your system to stay regulated.

If you’re working toward something right now—better health, a career change, a personal goal, a calmer life, or perhaps a New Year’s resolution all your own—rest isn’t a detour from the path. It’s part of it.

And sometimes, the most responsible thing you can do…is nothing at all.

Taking Inventory For The New Year By: Brian Schaffer

This is the last week of the year, and for an organization like ours, we will be taking inventory of the resources we have available on the shelf to take into 2026. An inventory is not only for businesses, but can be used in your personal life as well. What do you have on the shelf that you will be taking into 2026? Some things have a Shelf Life, and are no longer suitable for use.

Are there things you’d like to discard in 2025, and make room in 2026 for something new? As I look back on the past 12 months, my wife and I had quite a few things on our list to accomplish, and I believe we successfully completed most of them. One thing we had on the list was to periodically sort through items in our closet, storage bins, and even things in the attic as a way of taking inventory of all our earthly goods. It was a little tough at times, because we had to make decisions on what to keep, what to sell, and what to donate or throw away. We said good-bye to a few things that were sentimental, but not necessarily something we needed. Sometimes, it’s good to wrestle with the reasons why we think we need something that we haven’t used in a decade.

You may or may not be aware of this, but the phrase "taking an inventory of your life" originated from the 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, where "taking inventory" is a core practice referring to the process of honestly examining your thoughts, actions, and behaviors to identify areas needing improvement, particularly regarding addiction recovery; essentially taking stock of yourself and your life to make positive changes. I have met hundreds of people in my lifetime that have put this into practice, and it’s been amazing to watch their personal transformation.

I’m hopeful in the new year to accomplish a few things, but I realize it won’t happen by accident.

I’m planning to embark on a reflective journey through the chapters of the past year. This will provide me an opportunity to pause, sift through the pages of the year, and discern lessons learned. I’m anticipating this will give me a better perspective of myself, and

help me take appropriate steps into the new year. As I mentioned earlier, I am celebrating some of the achievements, big and small, that happened in my life.

Overcoming challenges and setbacks in life have helped me discover things about myself that I never knew were deep within me. Ultimately these experiences have fueled my faith and motivation for life’s chapters that are yet to come.

There are many ways to get started in taking an inventory of your life. I found a few ideas that I’d like to share with you. Feel free to try them out to see if they ignite the fire within you to create a new plan for 2026.

1) Personal Achievements: This is a reflection on accomplishments, both big and small, that brought me a sense of fulfillment.

2) Challenges and Setbacks: Yes, there were some hurdles and obstacles faced this year. Understanding how I navigated difficult circumstances provides insights into strengths and areas for improvement.

3) Relationships and Connections: This is a very broad area that includes faith, family and friends. Does my life exemplify my faith? What has been the impact of my interactions on others?

Have I nurtured meaningful connections and/or are there areas for improvement?

4) Personal Growth and Learning: How have I invested in personal development? What educational pursuits, skill-building, or efforts did I consciously make toward self-improvement?

5) Personal Well-Being and Self-Care: How did I care for myself from a physical, mental, nutritional and emotional perspective? What adjustments are needed to enhance my overall sense of balance and happiness?

I trust your time reflecting on the past year will help you find some transformative potential that may be lying dormant within you. Sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know, so get others involved to help you on the journey ahead. I look forward to hearing updates from you on how you’re doing. Let’s stay in touch!

AA & Al-Anon Meetings Jean Ann Morse, age 93, passed away on December 19th, 2025 at her Estes Park apartment. Jean was born on January 24th, 1932 to Glenn and Laura (Scales) in Elgin, Illinois. Before getting married, she worked as a secretary at the Elgin Watch Factory. She married her Elgin High School sweetheart Stephen M. Morse on August 29th, 1951.

While Steve was attending College at Colorado State University (Boulder), she had their first child Diane. They lived up Boulder Canyon, in a cabin (Henson’s) alongside Boulder Creek. They fell in love with Colorado. On completion of college, they returned to Elgin. Steve worked at his father’s (Orville) pharmacy, Morse Drug Store.

They had three more children, Ronald, Kimberly, and James. When Orville retired, they purchased the pharmacy. Once the kids were old enough, Jean did bookkeeping and gift buying for the gift store. In 1983, they closed the drug store and moved to Estes Park, Colorado fulfilling their lifelong dream of living in Colorado.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; parents, Laura and Glenn; and her brother, John. She is survived by her children, Diane (Scott Sutter), Ron (Kit), Kim (Joe Thalman), and Jim (Sally); grandchildren, Diane: Wendy (Terrence Fletcher), Jeff Rieger, and Derek (Erin); Ron: Glenn (Becky) and David (Grace); Kim: Jordan and Michelle; Jim: Jacob (Brynn) and Caleb; greatgrandchildren, Wendy: Jace; Derek: Colby, Bradon, and Anna; Glenn: Nadia and Jared; David: Seth, Angela, Olivia, and William.

We will all miss her dearly. Her faith has become sight, she now rests in God’s loving arms.
