At the EV Voice’s Business Resilience symposium (November 18th), consumer confidence was said to have the biggest impact on visitation. I also heard that building relationships (in person and online) is the most powerful tool to build long-term loyalty.

The Brownfield’s store is one of the best at that. Brownfield’s sage Jamie Palmesano visited the town board earlier in 2025 to talk about how to keep our summers strong. In a recent local article, she called on the Town Board to consider how our actions and policies impact summer tourism.

I very much appreciate her insights. I agreed then and I agree now with her comments. Hospitality, building customer relationship, and the overall visitor experience are our strongest assets as far as visitation is concerned (along with natural beauty and RMNP).

Jamie asked, “My challenge to our leaders is, how are we weighing the benefits and the consequences [of], and what is the return on investment for, every single decision that’s being made?” Yes, we must weigh those benefits and consequences on any decision that could impact tourism.

The Estes Economic Dashboard doesn’t identify causal relationships from specific policies. Does paid parking really drive away a measurably large number of potential tourists? Do new traffic patterns degrade the Estes experience and cause long-time multiyear visitors to choose a different destination this summer? Is the lodging tax itself the single factor that reduces the number of nights visitors stay in Estes?

Are there other Estes-centric factors that push people away or draw them in?

And are the policies and practices of Estes as influential as the economic, generational, cultural, political, social, and other factors, in the wide world, state, national, and global? The Estes factors must be properly weighted in the totality of factors.

If we put every factor on a scale of “excites more visitation” or “turns away visitation,” which of all these factors would be weighted the most? And second, and third?

Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, others – human beings all. All generations share certain themes: Starting families, educational costs, career options health care. Then there’s new and changing social, economic, and tech-

nological factors, including AI, remote workplaces, the mobile communication world, social media.

The forces of 2025 society in America are as different from the 1980s as the 1980s were from the 1950s and the 1950s were from the 1920s.

Jamie asks another excellent question: “How is the [economic dashboard] data is being reviewed, critiqued, discussed?” I do expect that the Chamber of Commerce and Visit Estes Park consider those indicators and evolve their approaches as appropriate, in addition to other data that they collect.

The Town Board hasn’t spent time as a group reviewing the dashboard in a general sense, or in regard to tourist traffic. It’s difficult to use that broad data as a referendum on any specific policy. Still, looking at the full set of dashboard data would be a worthy exercise; I will suggest it as a Study Session topic. The Town Trustees owe it to Estes to study and use that data (and

more) when considering policies, ordinances, other actions.

The need to keep Estes Estes should impact any related policy decision.

Jamie analyzed VEP and Town data, with a bit of AI help, and gave me a great “focus list” of potential directions/actions. I am studying that, learning, and adjusting my thoughts.

Her assignments are highly worthy!

As long as I’ve lived here, I’ve heard that we need to build the shoulder seasons. (In my time at the hospital, we needed that to give our medical and support staff year-round work.) We are now more of a year-round destination (much thanks to VEP), and most residents and businesses in the community survey say they like that.

Our identity since the 1870s has been a destination to visit and explore. Most of our sales tax is tourist-related. Estes is still a beautiful and desirable place to be. So, keep the summer strong. (I will continue to urge the VEP Board and the new VEP CEO to keep that top of mind.) Keep Estes beautiful. (I will continue to work with the Town Board to always consider that.). And then – everything else! Retain necessary workers, prevent fires, keep the population safe, maintain our roads and utilities and buildings, improve transportation, expand workforce housing – much to do and balance.

We must be Estes-centric to preserve the beauty and character of our town.

We must be Estes-centric in our expression of welcoming our visitors with the unique, magical Estes experience.

And – we must weigh the totality of factors (internal and external) that impact tourism.

I thank all who provide input to help the trustees shape policy. Your input does affect the arc of the Town’s future.

New “Sleigh the Games” Winter Adventure Festival Launches This Weekend In Estes Park This holiday season, the festive cheer comes with a side of friendly fire. Sleigh the Games, a new holiday adventure festival, is debuting in Estes Park this weekend, December 12–14, and it’s calling all fun-loving adults and families to join in the action. He was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

On December 6th, police served a misdemeanor traffic arrest warrant to a 26-yearold male at 2383 Highway 66. The suspect was booked and released.

On December 7th, police stopped a 29year-old female in the area of E. Riverside Drive and E. Elkhorn Avenue. The driver was charged with driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving a vehicle with blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more, and engaging in an exhibition of speed. She was booked and released.

On December 8th, police stopped a 28year-old female at 131 Virginia Drive. The driver was charged with driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive in a single lane (weaving), and driving a vehicle with a license under review. She was arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Colorado Creative District Celebration Rescheduled For December 13th Due to winter weather, the Colorado Creative District Celebration originally scheduled for December 6th is rescheduled for Saturday, December 13th, 2025, from 12–4 p.m. The celebration will still take place at 175 Cleave Street and remain a free, family-friendly community event.

This special kickoff celebration is hosted in partnership with Whimsadoodle and the Estes Arts District (EAD) to honor Estes Park’s new designation as a Colorado Creative District, as announced by Colorado Creative In-

dustries (CCI), a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT).

The event will feature live music by Cowboy Brad and more, along with kids’ crafts, a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m., food trucks, games, cozy fire pits, and activities for all ages. This celebration officially marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for creativity, arts, and community in Estes Park.

Town Prepares For April 7th Municipal Election Candidate Forum Scheduled For Jan. 6th The Town of Estes Park will hold the next regular Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 7th, 2026 to elect three trustee seats on the Board of Trustees.

Voters will determine who will occupy seats currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Marie Cenac, Trustees Bill Brown and Kirby Hazelton. Mayor Pro Tem Cenac is term limited. The other two Trustees are eligible to run for one of the three four-year terms.

For individuals who are interested in learning more about becoming a candidate, the Town Clerk will offer a candidate information forum on January 6th, 2026 at 6 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, at 170 MacGregor Ave. This forum will include a review of the candidate packet, including candidate eligibility, nomination instructions, the nomination petition, Fair Campaign Practices Act instructions, expectations of time commitment and the role of a Board member.

Registered electors 18 years of age or older may be a candidate and hold office if they have resided inside Town limits for at least 12 consecutive

months immediately preceding April 7th, 2026. Candidate packets will be available at the Town Clerk’s office, Room 130 of Town Hall on or after January 6th, 2026 and nomination petitions may be circulated beginning the same day. The petition must be signed by at least 10 registered electors who reside inside Town limits. The filing deadline for nomination petitions is January 26th, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Additional important dates for candidates: February 2nd: Last day to file a WriteIn Candidate Affidavit.

February 2nd: Last day for a candidate to withdraw from the election.

UCHealth Activates Extra Measures To Protect During Respiratory Illness Season Health system urges Coloradans to protect themselves and others UCHealth is seeing an increase in respiratory illnesses across Colorado as the season of holiday gatherings and travel approaches.

“We are officially in respiratory virus season, which includes everything from the common cold to more severe illnesses,” said Dr. Michelle Barron, senior medical director of infection prevention and control for UCHealth.

To protect patients, visitors and staff, UCHealth is implementing seasonal visitor restrictions at all of its hospitals and clinics. The following seasonal visitor policy is now in effect: • Most patients may have multiple visitors per day, but no more than two visitors or support persons at a time.

Visitor hours are from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Visitors younger than 12 years of age are prohibited from visiting these

high-risk areas: all intensive care units, transplant locations, oncology inpatient floors and pediatric units, including NICUs and special care nurseries.

Restrictions also apply to some units where ICU and oncology patients are being treated.

• Visitors with coughs or other signs of respiratory illness will be asked to wear a mask while in the facility or to wait to visit when they are healthy.

Now is the perfect time for Coloradans to protect themselves and others, Barron added.

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the flu shot and other vaccines to become fully effective. So, Barron is urging people to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccines now (if they haven’t already). That way, they’ll be fully protected when holiday gatherings begin later this month. Barron is also encouraging people to stay home if they aren’t feeling well.

Community & Estes Arts District Celebrate Colorado Creative District Designation A crowd of more than 40 artists, patrons, and community members, including Town Trustees Frank Lancaster and Bill Brown, Town Administrator Travis Machalek joined in the festivities, along with Sarah Leonard, Visit Estes Park’s new CEO, and Colleen DePasquale, President of the Estes Chamber, gathered with the Estes Arts District Board on Saturday afternoon, December 6th, to celebrate the EAD’s new headquarters and recognize the honor of being named a Colorado Creative District by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. The EAD is an umbrella organization representing the various arts organizations and artists in the Estes Valley community, including painters, sculptors, glass blowers, ceramic and fiber artists, leather makers, writers, poets, musicians, dancers, songwriters, filmmakers, storytellers, actors, brewers, and chefs...

Co-Chairs Lars Sage and Dana Paiement conducted the event and introduced the other Board members: Greg Miles, Amber Lausted, David Hernanadez, and newly elected Ravit Michener.

Among the attendees were State Senator Janice Marchman, County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally, both of whom offered comments. Mayor Gary Hall shared an official Proclamation: “Now therefore, be it resolved, I, Gary Hall, Mayor of the Town of Estes Park, Colorado, do hereby proclaim and celebrate the official recognition of the

Estes Arts District as a certified Colorado Creative District, and commend all those whose vision, collaboration, and perseverance have contributed to achieving this milestone. Let this certification serve as a symbol of our community’s ongoing commitment to creativity, collaboration, and cultural prosperity.” After was a ribbon-cutting, giving recognition to the achievement

by Estes Arts District in being awarded the Creative Arts District designation.

Greg Miles, a founding member of the EAD, spoke before the ribbon was cut to proudly announce that “the Estes Arts District is the officially recognized and certified Creative District entity for the Town of Estes Park.” The recognition was achieved over several years and three applications involving extensive planning, compliance, and site evaluations with the State of Colorado.

Miles explained that the designation, governance, reporting, responsibilities, branding, and statewide recognition belong to the Estes Arts District as the certified entity. “Any organizations in Town, whether that’s an arts business, nonprofit, studio, gallery, or an artist, are absolutely welcome to describe themselves as ‘located within the Estes Creative District,'” said Miles. The new designation comes with a $10,000 grant, which needs to be matched locally, and marketing assistance from the state to promote the area as a creative district.

Estes Park Schools To Host Free Holiday Concert On December 17th Join us for an evening of music, community, and holiday cheer! The Estes Park School District will host a free, district-wide holiday concert featuring students from across all grade levels on December 17th. This festive community event will take place at the Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA, with the per-

Twinkling lights, sparkling trees, heartwarming carols, stockings, candles, eggnog, cookies and candy canes—they all add up to a wonder shared among family and friends not felt at any other time. (This is the ideal, of course. The holidays aren’t perfect, but there are magical moments when we’re in the right frame of mind.) For my family, the walk to midnight Mass was an especially meaningful tradition.

No matter how cold it was, we bundled up and made it down the three blocks to the glowing church. We playfully tussled to land a place on the pew next to Dad so we could best hear him sing carols in his sweet and pure singing voice and hold his always-warm hand.

Easter presents some of that same magic, with bunnies, baskets, dyed eggs, chocolate, hiding and seeking.

When I was a youth, we got home from church on Easter Sunday and Mom would suddenly remember that we were out of milk. Off she’d send Dad, with all of us kids in the back seat of the car, to get milk. Every year. When we arrived back home, to my amazement, the Easter Bunny had been there.

I loved the enchantment of Easter, including women in church wearing fancy hats, getting dressed up in the pastel colors of spring, and the delight of finding hidden eggs.

All of the holidays have had that enthralling effect on me. Valentine’s Day. (Who sent that unsigned valentine?

Could it be Matt Wheeler, my grade school heartthrob?) May Day. (Who left that homemade paper cone filled with pansies hanging on our doorknob?) The Fourth of July. (How can anything be as mesmerizing as the fireworks lighting up the sky?) Halloween.

(All those crazy characters!) Thanksgiving. (When time together is the most important thing.) Each of these special times brings something dreamlike to everyday life. I love the ritual, the tradition, and the mystique of the different and unexplainable.

There are a few things I grew up with that were not as grand as the holidays but offered their own level of mystery.

These smaller activities left me intrigued and enchanted. I was reminded of one of these activities when I was cleaning up the turkey carcass after this past Thanksgiving. With slippery hands trying to hold onto what was once a 10-pound bird, I wrestled to separate the wishbone, in one piece, from the skeleton. I washed the wishbone off and set it on the kitchen windowsill to dry out, just like my mom used to do and her mother before her. I knew that in a few days I would get someone to compete with me to “win” a wish-come-true. We would each grasp one half of the arch-shaped bone and press our thumbs against the flat plate at the top. Then we’d each make a silent wish and at “Ready. Set. Go!” we would pull the bone apart until it snapped. Whoever got the larger side would have their wish come true. The

spell would be broken if the winner revealed their wish, so there was an element of secrecy to the ritual. This made it all the more alluring!

This practice goes back to the 16th century, where in England they called it “Merrythought.” The term “wishbone” emerged in the U.S. in the mid1800s. The superstition symbolized luck, hope and good fortune, which evolved over time into a wish-cometrue.

Even more spellbinding was the Ouija Board, which I only ever remember “playing” with my grandmother. We sat facing each other, with the board between us on our lap. She would have me ask a question, which was usually something like, “Will I get married someday?” and then we would place our fingertips lightly on the triangular planchette resting in the center of the board and wait for it to move. My heart would skip a beat at the first sign of motion! Slowly the wooden plate would glide on its felt-covered feet, pointing at one letter and then another, spelling out the answer. (In this case, “Yes.”) Was Gram moving the planchette? I wondered, giving her a sideways glance. She revealed no signs of trickery and she wasn’t the type to deceive. I watched her fingers.

They rested lightly on the planchette, just as mine did.

But…really?

Could it be a spirit from beyond? Did Gram believe in the paranormal?

When I was older I was disappointed to learn some people accused Ouija Board players of using the game as a tool of the devil to manipulate innocent minds. For me, it was an experiment in suspended disbelief and I felt closer to my grandmother for sharing the mystery with me. Even though I was never completely sure about the Ouija Board, I knew my grandma was someone I could trust who had a heightened appreciation for simple fun.

(One time she sent her grandkids on a treasure hunt in her yard. The treasure at the end of the trail was a bowl of popcorn.)

We only have one chance on this planet, we might as well make some magic while we’re here. May baskets, fireworks, wishbones and Ouija Boards. Why not?

Trailblazer Broadband Named A Finalist For 2025 World Broadband Association Awards Trailblazer Broadband has been named a World Broadband Award Finalist for our project, “Estes Park’s FiberEnabled Smart Grid.”

For a small mountain town to be recognized on a global stage—among cutting-edge broadband and energy innovation projects from around the world—is a tremendous honor. We’re incredibly proud of our Power & Communications team, our partners at Platte River Power Authority (PRPA), and most of all, our community. Estes Park has always been willing to think big, even from our remote corner of the Rockies. This nomination shows just how far that boldness can go.

A Category Filled With Global Trailblazers The category Trailblazer was nominated in is one of the most forwardthinking of the entire awards program, honoring broadband projects that integrate next-generation technology, automation, and community benefit.

It was also highly competitive—this year’s winner was a large-scale initiative delivering broadband to 67 rural communities across Africa, a project with massive scope and global impact. Being named a finalist alongside efforts of that scale underscores the significance of Estes Park’s work and the strength of our long-term vision.

The Project Our award nomination centers on Estes Park’s effort to build a “Smart Mountain Community”—an initiative that blends municipal fiber, modern grid technology, and community-focused resiliency.

Since 2019, the Town’s Power & Communications division has built out Trail-

blazer Broadband, our town-owned fiber network. That fiber now powers much more than high-speed internet. It forms the communication backbone for: Smart electric meters Substations Grid monitoring and operations Public-safety and emergency systems This foundation allows Estes Park to

take major steps toward a more resilient and efficient electric grid. In partnership with Platte River Power Authority (PRPA), the town is expanding redundant regional fiber routes and planning a 5-MW/20-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to support faster outage restoration, protect essential facilities, and prepare for future microgrid capabilities.

PRPA’s upcoming Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) will add AI-driven analytics that help balance renewable energy, improve reliability, and automate grid operations—solutions typically seen in much larger cities.

The result is a practical, scalable model for rural communities: use municipal fiber as the foundation for smarter energy, safer operations, and greater long-term resilience.

Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Donates $1,000 To Support Police Department’s Blue Santa Program

The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary Club has donated $1,000 to the Estes Park Police Department’s annual Blue Santa Program, helping ensure that local families in need experience a brighter and more joyful holiday season.

The Blue Santa Program, organized by the Estes Park Police Department, provides gifts, food, and essential household items to families who may be struggling during the holidays. With rising costs affecting many area residents, community support plays a critical role in meeting the growing need.

“Our Rotary Club is honored to support the Blue Santa Program again this year,” said Gordon Slack, President of Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary. “Blue Santa reflects the spirit of service that defines Estes Park—neighbors helping neighbors. We are grateful to the Estes Park Police Department for their leadership and for the care they show to families in our community.”

Police Captain Rick Life expressed appreciation for the Rotary’s contribution, noting that donations like this directly support children and families identified by local schools, nonprofits,

Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge Unites Ultrarunners On Estes Park's Local Gem By: Kevin Benes, Running Wild Events

On a snowy December 6th morning, 35 dedicated runners gathered at the Thumb Open Space on Peak View for the annual Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge. This unique 8-hour endurance event requires competitors to repeatedly climb to the summit of The Thumb, collecting a poker chip at the top before descending and repeating the process.

"It's a beautiful day to suffer in the mountains," commented Estes Park local John Grotenhuis, who completed his second year in the challenge, achieving a personal best of 18 climbs and 10,100 feet of vertical gain.

The event’s quirky format is specifically designed for intimacy and community.

Each chip collected represents 562 feet of vertical ascent and 2 kilometers of distance.

Race Director Kevin Benes explained, "We limit the race to 35 runners to keep things intimate and limit the amount of passing.

Since the Thumb is only a 1km trail, every competitor will pass each other dozens of times throughout the day. By 4 p.m., everyone knows each other's names, and this event has a history of developing long-lasting friendships.”

Running Wild Events has spent the last few years working to establish Estes Park as a premier ultrarunning destination. Due to National Park restrictions and private land blocking most Forest access, the organization has focused on creating unique races that highlight accessible local trails.

“Thumbs Up is the shining example of using a local hidden gem and making a race that is truly special for the athletes,” Benes added. Unlike most ultra trail races, which are solitary endeavors, Thumbs Up preserves the difficulty of an 8-hour mountain climb

while infusing a sense of community and spirit rarely seen in the sport.

RWE’s races attract a wide audience, with 90% of competitors coming from across the country and internationally. Four competitors at Thumbs Up call Estes Park home: Shane Taylor: 2nd place overall with 21 climbs and 11,802 ft.

Dennis Shaver: 19 climbs and 10,678 ft.

John Grotenhuis: 18 climbs with 10,100 ft.

Kendrick Callaway: 15 climbs with 8,430 ft.

The overall winners of the challenge were Devin Cann from Golden, with 22 climbs and 12,364 feet, and Bridget Flynn from Littleton, with 19 climbs and 10,678 feet.

The winning number of climbs has remained 22 in all three years the event has taken place.

Climbers earned commemorative patches representing significant local milestones: Estes Park Patch: 14 climbs (more than 7,522 ft.)

Deer Mountain Patch: 18 climbs (more than 10,100 ft.)

Longs Peak Patch: 26 climbs (more than 14,259 ft.), a reward that remains unclaimed.

$4,500 Matching Gift Doubles Community Donations For Cancer Screenings At Estes Park Health

The Estes Park Health Foundation has announced a generous $4,500 matching gift that will double all donations to its Cancer Screening Fund, dollar for dollar, up to $4,500. This limited-time match provides a fantastic opportunity for community members to expand access to life-saving cancer screenings for residents of the Estes Valley.

The Cancer Screening Fund helps cover the cost of breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancer screenings for individuals who are underinsured or uninsured, ensuring that financial barriers do not delay early detection and care.

The impact of this fund is already being felt in the community. One local resident recently received her first mammogram through a donor-funded screening voucher after losing her health insurance due to a small wage

increase. With a strong family history of cancer, she nearly delayed her screening because of cost and fear. Instead, she was able to receive compassionate care at Estes Park Health and learned later that same day that her results were clear.

“I was given the gift of ‘no worry,’” she shared. “Knowledge and health are power. This experience changed my trajectory.”

All donations made while matching funds are available will be matched dollar for dollar, effectively doubling the number of screenings the Foundation can provide through this program.

Local Bank Reports Record Year & Impacts On Community

As I attended the recent “State of Estes Park” event at the YMCA, it dawned on me that as the town’s only local bank, Bank of Estes Park should really report back to the community about this record-breaking year, especially since we owe our tremendous results entirely to you! Truly, there are no banks producing similar results to ours, or performing for their communities the way that Bank of Estes Park is, so it is with extreme gratitude that we report the following to you—the 2025 “State of Bank of Estes Park!”

Competitive and Financial Summary: According to FDIC data, this was the year that we reclaimed our long-term historical position as the largest market share bank in Estes Valley. We continue to maintain the highest Safety and Soundness rating possible (five stars) as scored by Bauer Financial Ratings. According to FDIC data, our competitors and peers have mid-single digit loan growth, while Bank of Estes Park shows loan volumes of two and three times theirs at 15%—making us by far the highest volume lender in Estes Valley, and one of the top in the state. All of the bank’s main measures of profitability are stronger than both market and peer, including common measures such as Return on Assets and Net Interest Margin; but the most staggering accomplishment is in our 150% yearover-year Net Income growth, which is due to the extremely large volumes of new business we’ve done in 2025.

from the all-summer promotion. To help local businesses, we also reduced the interest rate and increased the maximum limit of our easy-to-get locals-only “Grow Estes” line of credit.

Then when Crossroads lost the venue for its main annual fundraiser, Vintage, we converted our lobby into a venue and hosted the event in our lobby. When EP Learning Place lost the necessary funding for its GED program, we formed and funded the Bank of Estes Park Bright Futures Program to fund local students seeking their GED’s. When Crossroads was struggling with funding (even struggling to provide eggs, etc.), we formed and funded a ”Top Sponsor Program,” providing more funding, and a longer-term commitment for that funding, to ensure continuity of services that we deemed vital to our hometown’s safety net. Two bank executives, Dwight Pfeiffer and Jenny Miles, took the lead in reviving the local Lion’s Club, including restarting the seyeglass collections in town and local vision testing at the schools.

And Plant a Book, Grow a Child (founded by Brandi and Scott Applegate) celebrated 10 years—5,314 books given to 2,491 local children, at a total cost of $38,600.

LCSO Spring 2026 Citizens Academy Applications Open The Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office is now accepting applications for the Spring 2025 Citizens Academy. This informational program will start on February 10th and run through May 5th.

Classes will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights for 12 classes, and one Saturday field day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No classes are scheduled for the week of Spring Break.

The academy is designed to give community members an in-depth perspective on LCSO operations. After kicking off with an introduction to the Sheriff and his command staff, topics will include: • Patrol Operations • K9 Program • Bomb Squad/Terrorism • Frauds and Scams • Major Case Investigations • Crime Scene Investigation • Wildland Firefighting • Search and Rescue/Dive Rescue • SWAT/AHCR and Hostage Negotiations • Dispatch • School Resource Officers • Jail Operations and Programs • Drug Task Force The classes are presented by deputies, commanders, and professional staff leaders responsible for each area. One of the highlights of the academy is field day, where students get to participate in live scenarios. The scenarios include responding to calls that involve shooting with simulated ammunition, making traffic stops, and actively participating in exercises similar to situations that we frequently respond to.

The academy capacity is limited and fills up fast. All applicants must be at least 18 years old and a resident or business owner in Larimer County. Due to the depth of information and facility access during this program, participants may not have misdemeanor convictions within the last three years or any felony convictions. The fee for the academy is $35, which covers the cost of student materials, and meals served at field day and graduation. Estes Park Woman's Club To Host Brad Fitch Concert To Benefit Scholarships For Young Women

On January 10th, 2026, with doors opening at 6 p.m., the Estes Park Woman’s Club is presenting Brad Fitch in concert at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. Brad has graciously agreed to help the Woman’s Club raise money for their Scholarship Program.

Every year, the Estes Park Woman’s

Club honors two young women graduating from Estes Park High School with a scholarship worth over two thousand dollars. In order to do this, the Estes Park Woman’s Club takes donations, sponsors a Trunk Treasures Sale in July and has many members offer their craft and baking skills to help fill their scholarship

coffers. This year, the organization is sponsoring Brad Fitch in a concert entitled “Songwriters of the Seventies,” a show he has not done for some time.

Song writers such as Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, The Eagles, James Taylor, and John Denver will be featured.

Tickets are $35 and are available from any Woman’s Club member and at Macdonald Book Shop.

Prior to the concert and immediately after, the Woman’s Club will do what they do best…offer up their wonderful baked goods and craft items for donation. The club figures that if they can build a library, buy city property, contribute to our schools’ needs, come to the financial rescue of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park like they do, surely Estes Park residents will help them continue their philanthropic programs. So make an evening of hearing Estes’s own local song bird, Brad Fitch, in concert singing the songs that defined a decade. Songs and service go hand-in-hand on January 10th. State Of Estes Park: What We Learned & How Local Businesses Are Approaching 2026

The inaugural State of Estes Park was held last week, with 110 attendees braving a snowy morning to listen and learn with experts from the Town, county, and state. During the event, a number of speakers presented results from the 2025 year and a look-ahead at how businesses should be envisioning 2026.

Presentations included remarks from the event title sponsor, Platte River Power Authority, whose General Manager/CEO Jason Frisbie took a look at the changing energy landscape and its potential impact on the Estes Valley: “The energy landscape is changing rapidly, driven by technology, noncarbon goals, and customer expectations,” Frisbie said. “We see this as an opportunity to innovate and bring value to the communities we serve, by taking a balanced approach to our clean energy transition – expanding renewables, reducing emissions, and maintaining affordability and reliability, all while making sure our infrastructure meets your expectations,” he added.

Frisbie’s remarks were followed by a retrospective of the work of the Estes Chamber from outgoing Chair and founding member Keith Pearson: “As my tenure on this Board winds down, I want to reflect back to 2018,” he began. “Estes Park had been without a Chamber of Commerce for more than a decade. But the needs of our community and its businesses continued to get more complex. In the absence of a chamber, an alphabet soup of organizations filled the void, with most being volunteer organizations, and as the needs continued to increase, they exceeded the capacity of these volunteers. So, a task force was formed to evaluate the benefit of a Chamber and many of these task force members became the inaugural Board of our newly formed Chamber, incorporated in May 2019. We stood on the shoulders of giants! But not any longer… our team has established a solid foundation on which we have built a strong Chamber and continue to build,” Pearson added.

He also recognized two other founding members who have reached their term limits. Teresa Mueller, who had been the Chamber treasurer since the inception and helped shape all the organization’s fiscal policies and processes, and Derek Vinge who had served as the inaugural Vice-Chair, then Chair of the Board, and sat on numerous committees, including being the title sponsor

of the annual Chamber Cup and several other signature events.

Incoming Chamber Chair Breeyan Edwards accepted the reigns of the position with a recognition of Pearson’s work and crediting his “immeasurable guidance, dedication and commitment.” She continued, “I’m very grateful to stand alongside so many people who care deeply about the future of the Estes Valley. When you look around this room, you can feel it — the passion, the grit, and the heart that make this business community what it is.

This past year, our Chamber has shown what’s possible when we move with intention. This momentum matters, because it proves that when we collaborate, we create real change.

As we look ahead to 2026, my focus is on deepening that progress and expanding what’s possible. My approach is simple: we move farther when we move together. Collaboration doesn’t just strengthen our Chamber — it strengthens our economy, our workforce, and the quality of life we all share,” she added.

Given the notable successes of 2025, the path forward for the Estes Chamber seems clear – they will be focusing on expanding programming and events, supporting business growth across all sectors, increasing their state and local advocacy work, and expanding their Economic Development & Workforce Council (EDWC) and Foundation activity impact.

The Chamber Foundation, a charitable division of the Chamber, is spearheaded by Harriette Woodard who gave an update on their work for 2026 – include new scholarships available for graduating seniors. Every dollar we steward, every program we support, is designed to keep our business community vibrant, resilient, and full of possibility. “The first scholarship,” Woodard explained, “will be in memory of Kent Smith, to be awarded annually to a qualified graduating high school senior. We also will be continuing our business-relief efforts and developing clear criteria for future support, though we sincerely hope our community never faces a situation where it’s needed again,” she added, referencing the traumatic loop construction and impact grants awarded to businesses that saw massive declines in revenue during the project.

The EDWC Chair, Christina Kraft, spoke in detail about the council’s vision for 2026 – stirring the crowd with excitement and drumming up requests for more resources to support local businesses in the new year. “Economic diversification will be a priority for us

in 2026,” Kraft said. “Reducing seasonal effects by broadening the economic base, providing support for entrepreneurs and small businesses, growing our reach in professional services, trades, and remote work, and expanding regional collaboration on emerging industries will be top of the list for the council,” she added. “That’s only a fraction of our goals, though – we will help our businesses to thrive by uniting the skill sets, experiences, and learnings of all of our local partners,” Kraft added.

The State of Estes Park was not solely about the Chamber and EDWC, though. A key component to both organizations and to the success of local businesses rests on local tourism. Visit Estes Park, therefore, gave an in-depth look at the value of tourism in Estes Park and it was quite eye-opening.

“This past year, tourism generated over 3,400 jobs,” said CEO Sarah Leonard. “Direct travel-related spending resulted in more than $510M and nearly $29M in local tax revenue – that’s 82% of our town tax revenue,” she added.

Seeing the numbers laid out so simple and clearly enhanced the attendees’ collective understanding of the importance of tourism, seasonal marketing, and business-to-business partnerships to maintain steady growth. Leonard also spotlighted major community developments including the Estes Arts District’s Certification as a Colorado Creative District by the Colorado Creative Industries, a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade; Colorado Tourism Office partnership with Wheel the World Accessibility Program; The Sundance Film Festival collaboration; The Stanley Chocolate Factory, The Stanley Film Center, and expansions at The Stanley Hotel.

“These new developments enhance residents’ quality of life, strengthen our local economy, and help ensure Estes Park remains a thriving, sustainable place to live and visit,” she remarked.

“They also bolster Estes Park’s profile as a premier visitor destination with a thriving tourism economy offering meaningful arts, culture, and heritage experiences,” she added.

Additional speakers for the day included Mayor Gary Hall who spokes about Town projects including upcoming trustee elections, new police department work, and the need for new water purification facilities to replace our two aging plants, as well as Town environmental sustainability efforts, and trail buildouts. He also spoke about what makes the town “healthy” and the work being done to ensure Estes Park as a healthy fire department, school system, hospital, library, and sanitation system. He wrapped his remarks praising the civil discourse and neighborly support he has seen this year, during tough times and positive times, encouraging us all to rise above the fray and put our best selves forward every day to make Estes Park a great place to live, work, and play.

From Dragon Fire To Garden Flowers With Z.S. Diamanti

Colorado’s award-winning fantasy author and illustrator, Z.S. Diamanti, is visiting our mountain village to share stories and insights about his newest book, “The Guard in the Garden.” This cozy fantasy tells the story of Felton Holdum, an elite dwarven warrior who, after an injury, learns to embrace a new life he never expected. Classical Music With Dr. DeYoung Returns For 19th Year This January, Dr. Derald DeYoung returns to the Library for the 19th year, offering a free, six-week deep dive into the life and music of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose work is widely considered the high point and culmination of the Baroque music period. Bach may arguably be the most important and influential composer of Western art music, as almost every subsequent composer looked to his music for instruction and inspiration.

This class will present the many genres of music for which Bach is so well known, including organ, keyboard, chamber, orchestral, cantatas, the St Matthew Passion, and Mass in B minor. As in previous classes, the goal is to introduce listeners to iconic music of the past and assist in the greater enjoyment of classical music in general.

Participants will learn what to listen for in the music and receive an education on the composer's background, including historical moments of their time and culture. No formal musical background is required to appreciate the music presented, because we believe music is for everyone. The only requirement is a desire to learn, hear, and acquire insight into some of the greatest music of Western civilization.

Bach’s music remains among the most profound, powerful, and complex ever

composed. This series is sure to provide an uplifting and potentially even spiritual experience for those who listen attentively. Join us in the discovery and exploration of Bach’s works and life beginning January 13th, 2026.

Estes Park Village Band To Present Christmas Concert The Estes Park Village Band will present a Holiday Concert of traditional Christmas music as well as newer songs for the holidays on Sunday, December 14th. The free concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the Estes Park High School Auditorium, 1600 Manford Ave. The Estes Park Jazz Big Band will not perform on this concert but will present their own concert on Sunday, December 21st at Hyde Chapel, YMCA of the Rockies beginning at 7 p.m.

Sharing the conducting duties for Sunday’s program will be Judy Vasel, Melinda Workman, and Chuck Varilek.

Village Band selections will include “Happy Holidays/White Christmas,” “Candlelight Carol,” “Greensleeves,” “Coventry Carol,” and “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year.”

For the band’s traditional end-of-concert sing-along, Scott Anderson will lead the audience in singing a medley of well-known Christmas songs, “The

Ultimate Christmas Sing-Along,” arranged by Village Band member Jerry Brubaker. Songs in the medley include “Jingle Bells,” “Deck The Halls,” “Silent Night” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

The Village Band has been performing free concerts for the Estes Park community and its visitors for the past 44 years.

The Estes Park Village Band and Jazz Big Band are community bands made

up of adult and school age musicians from the Estes Park area as well as from surrounding communities. New members are always welcome to perform with the bands.

Getting To Know Salud’s Dentist, Dr. Hong Editor’s note: Part I of this interview ran in the December 5th, 2025 edition of Estes Park News, available online at epnews.com.

Q: How many staff currently work for the Salud Dental Clinic?

A: We currently have five, including myself. We have two back office dental assistants, one front desk assistant, and Susan, who is a dental hygienist. We provide a variety of vital services including fillings, extractions, oral surgery, crowns, bridges, partials, full dentures, root canals (if we can save a tooth,) cavities, etc.

We also provide oral pathology to identify if cancer is present; it’s part of the comprehensive screening. Biopsies are done on site.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about working in Estes Park?

A: The outdoors is what drew me to CO in the first place. I love to mountain bike, camp, hike, paddleboard. I would like to find something in Estes Park, a piece of land. I don’t need much by way of a house but would love a plot of land to build on.

Q: What is some of the best advice you would give to parents (and adults) in regards to maintaining a consistent dental routine, including yearly check ups?

A: I think, you know, a good practice for adults is to come in for an annual checkup. Kids, every six months.

Try to focus on home care—brushing and flossing at home as a part of your daily routine.

Also be aware of what you are putting in your body—it’s not much different than how dietary choices affect your overall health. Highly processed foods, foods high in sugar, those things will lead to more cavities usually. Take a

look at some parts of your diets and try to cut back on those things, especially soda. Sweet tea, coffee, things that don’t seem so obvious but we’re adding sugar to, can also be something that adds to your body’s health and what your teeth are exposed to.

Q: What and who do you see the most of in relation to dental issues?

A: We see everyone. As a community health center and as a safety net to those that are underserved or Medicaid is their provider, we are the only clinic that provides these services.

Q: I read that tooth decay is the most common, unmet health care need in children and untreated, can lead to pain, infection and even result in issues with speaking and learning.

A: Dental decay is the most prevalent issue impacting children. Tooth pain is going to affect their ability to attend school, leading to absenteeism, selfconfidence issues and their self-esteem (missing teeth or decayed teeth).

Q: I know, as a Board member of Salud Foundation, that we are sponsoring a free dental care program, which includes a variety of services, for ages up to 21. What free services are being offered with the dental care program?

A: The free services program is specifically for children and young adults, up to age 21. That includes any treatment we offer here including initial exam, cleaning, any preventive needs we identify that they have including sealants (the areas where a tiny little crevice or pit isn’t getting a thorough brushing—a bit of food gets left behind and sits there and creates a cavity). In our younger children, we recommend sealants to cover up these little pits to prevent food from getting trapped in there and then you are less likely to develop a cavity in that area.

A: Salud Family Health is a clinical training site for residents that are in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program through NYU Langone Health. These recently graduated dentists participate in a one-to-two-year program to gain additional training and experience in general dentistry before starting their careers, typically as general dentists.

When I worked at the Longmont clinic, I worked with residents regularly. Now that I’m based in Estes Park, I spend one day per week with the resident in Longmont. In addition, many Salud clinics, including Estes Park, host fourth year dental students from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine to broaden their clinical experience. I really enjoy teaching students and residents as they refine their skills and grow into excellent clinicians.

‘Holiday Songs From The Movies’ Chorale Concert December 13th

The Estes Park Chorale’s seasonal concert will be presented at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 13th at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.

Denise Stookesberry is the Artistic Director, Steve Tice will narrate the concert and Michelle Gergen-Wisner is the group’s expert piano accompanist. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door, from any chorale member or at the Macdonald Book Shop.

Denise reports that the concert is designed to present popular and familiar songs selected to help all of us feel secure and safe in these uncertain times.

“Sleigh Ride,” from the movie “Castaway,” originated in 1948 with music by Leroy Anderson and words by Mitchell Parish. “Christmas Time is Here,” from the movie “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” has been recalling what children call their “favorite time of year” since 1966. “Linus and Lucy” also comes from the same movie.

Several smaller choral groups present numbers in the concert, including the Simpatica Quartet, the Luciana Ensemble and the Nada Ensemble. “Snow,” was originally presented in the movie “White Christmas,” and was sung in 1954 by Bing Crosby. Watch for the “Mozart Fa-la-la,” “An Irving Berlin Christmas,” and “Silver Bells.” Nostalgia wraps us warmly with a solo by Nelson Burke in “Blue Christmas,” from an original Elvis Presley record album from 1964.

A special appearance by swing dancers Pam and Robert DeJong will accompany Chorale’s lively, toe-tapping “Gettin’ in the Mood (for Christmas).”

In the spirited, high-energy section of the concert, Mark Hayes has arranged a mash-up of two tunes from the 1950’s, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” with “Jingle Bell Rock.”

Rudyard Kipling’s poem, “The Seal Lullaby,” was liltingly set to music by Eric Whitacre. Images of baby seals (flipperlings) help remind us of singing babies to sleep at the holiday time.

Two other nostalgic numbers are

“Somewhere In My Memory,” from “Home Alone,” and “Believe,” from “The Polar Express.”

It is fitting that the concert ends with the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s “Messiah.”

The Chorale is a 501(c)3 nonprofit

Cree Carrico To Perform At YMCA Of The Rockies

On Sunday, December 14th, Cree Carrico will present a Christmas Concert featuring a variety of classical, modern, and sing-a-long Christmas favorites beginning at 7 p.m. in Hyde Chapel.

This concert is a part of the Chapel Ministry’s 2025 “Holiday in Hyde” Advent Celebration. This performance is free and open to the public. A love offering will be collected.

Soprano Cree Carrico is “a notably versatile performer” and “sensational actress” who is continuously praised by critics for her “crystal clarity at the center of every note” making it “hard to watch anyone else when she’s on stage.” As a lead interpreter of 20th and 21st century works, Carrico collaborates closely with a number of com-

posers and librettists and performs in many premières of contemporary pieces, including the New York première of Jake Heggie’s monodrama At the Statue of Venus.

A member of Actor’s Equity, Cree earned her union card as an ensemble member in the New York Philharmonic’s performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, sharing the stage with Nathan Gunn, Kelli O’Hara, and Stephanie Blythe.

Cree received a Bachelor’s of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory and a Master’s of Music from Manhattan School of Music. She was a finalist in the Ades Competition, the Lotte Lenya Competition and the Houston Grand Opera Studio.

Cree currently lives in Estes Park, where she is a personal trainer at Estes Park Community Center and teaches specialty classes on occasion.

Estes Park Jazz Big Band To Perform At YMCA Of The Rockies

On Sunday, December 21st, the Estes Park Jazz Big Band will perform a concert “Home for the Holidays” at 7 p.m. in Hyde Chapel. This concert is a part of the Chapel Ministry’s 2025 “Holiday in Hyde” Advent Celebration. The concert is free and open to the public, with a love offering collected to support the band.

The Estes Park Jazz Big Band has been entertaining the Estes Park community and its visitors for over 30 years. Made up of local musicians, and

a couple from neighboring communities, the 20-piece big band provides musical entertainment and also provides a venue for musicians to express themselves by performing on their instruments. Concert selections include hits from the Big Band Era, with some newer selections for big band included.

The band perform concerts throughout the year, with summer concerts usually at Performance Park and winter concerts at Estes Park High School.

EVICS Begins 2025–2026 FFN Program To Boost Childcare In Estes Valley EVICS Family Resource Center has launched its 2025–2026 Family, Friends, and Neighbors (FFN) Cohort, aimed at increasing access to safe, high-quality childcare in the Estes Valley. Each month, the participants will take part in two Zoom lectures to learn the material, and two Community of Practices where they can interact with the material and ask questions as they've had time to practice. In addition, there will be several in-person training courses such as CPR/First Aid, a selfcare workshop, and sessions focused on the importance of play and outdoor learning.

To meet grant requirements, each section of the program includes a brief assessment. EVICS emphasizes that these are not graded tests but tools to measure program impact. All sessions are recorded, and participants who miss a class must notify the program lead and watch the recording before their next meeting.

Those who complete the full program may receive a $950 childcare start-up stipend, available only to 10 individuals planning to provide care for children outside their own household.

Karen Sheek is a retired middle school educator and business owner.

She taught in the Cortez school district for over 30 years.

In 2011 Karen served out the term of a departing City Council member and went on to be elected to two four-year terms, serving as Mayor for six of those years.

In 2020 Karen took on the role of President for the Colorado League of Women Voters. She served in that role for two years, and now continues to serve on the Board as Director of Local League Support.

Historic Park Theatre Shows Free Movie “Silent Night” To Support Crossroads Ministry The Historic Park Theatre in downtown Estes Park will show the movie “Silent Night” on Friday, December 12th, at 7 p.m.

Admission is free and moviegoers should bring a canned food donation to support the Crossroads Ministry.

Local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are coordinating the theatrical showing.

“Silent Night” is a 90-minute movie that tells the little-known origin story of the sacred song that was first sung in a small Catholic church in Oberndorf, Austria, on Christmas Eve 1818.

Filmed on location in Austria, this powerful story was inspired by the true events leading to the creation of the most popular Christmas carol of all time.

Austrian writer and director Christian Vuissa created a film that honored the Catholic priest and the spirit he shared through his poetry and song.

The film also honors Franz Gruber, whose melody still accompanies the timeless words.

In 1818 Joseph Mohr was the new assistant priest in Oberndorf, a small Austrian town near Salzburg, a young man full of ideas and ideals.

Mohr’s passion to bring the church

closer to the common people set him on a collision course with his new superior, Father Nöstler when Mohr organized a church choir that included outcasts from the local tavern and performed in German instead of Latin.

The night before Christmas the chapel organ broke down, and Mohr quickly re-arranged the composition to be performed by his choir, accompanied by guitar.

“It is a beautiful testament and reminder to all of us that out of small and humble circumstances God can make something great and everlasting,” said Vuissa. “The story of Joseph Mohr represents our own hopes as we live our lives and strive to do good… it encourages us to never give up.”

In 2017 the Historic Park Theatre held the U.S. premier of the movie “Silent Night” and has had free showings nearly every year since for the Estes Park community.

“Silent Night” debuted on BYU-TV in December 2012. The following year, the Catholic Academy of Communication Professionals honored the film with a Gabriel Award. It has appeared on television many Christmas seasons since.

The Estes Park Senior Citizens Center (EPSCC) invites the community to a special holiday musical event at 12 p.m., noon, on Tuesday, December 16th, at 1760 Olympian Lane. This special concert promises beautiful music, warmth, and community spirit. All are encouraged to attend.

The trio Going for Baroque features Linda Bensey on hammered dulcimer, Fred Jennes on bass, and Robert Johnson on guitar. Their Holiday Recital will blend selections from the Baroque period, featuring works by O’Carolan and Handel, with traditional Christmas favorites, including several engaging sing-alongs.

The musicians bring rich and varied backgrounds to the ensemble. Jennes began as a drummer performing along the East Coast in the 1960s before relocating to Greeley, where he transitioned to bass and played across Northern Colorado in rock, pop, country, and jazz groups.

Bensey first discovered the hammered dulcimer through her friendship with famed artist John McCut-

cheon. She has performed in Fort Collins and Denver in productions of The Quilters. She and Johnson started playing as a baroque duo as a way to bring peace to their lives.

Johnson jokes that he has been trying to learn guitar for sixty years, yet his playing has become a staple of the local music scene. He also performs with the Estes Park Jazz Big Band and occasionally joins the Estes Park Village Band on percussion.

Guests are welcome to bring their own lunch or pre-purchase a hot meal.

Meal orders must be placed by 1 p.m. on Monday, December 15th. The Senior Center will be serving Chicken Marsala with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The cost is $9 for EPSCC members and $12 for non-members.

Annual EPSCC membership is only $35 and provides meal discounts along with access to many wonderful programs and activities. It’s time to renew for 2026!

Each December, the Stanley Home Museum and Education Center opens its doors for one of its most cherished traditions: the Yuletide Open House.

This year the event takes place on December 13th and 14th.

The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary is partnering with the Estes Park Middle and High School Interact Club to recycle Christmas lights this holiday season.

So, whether your lights won’t turn on, or they go out halfway through the season, come drop them off! From November 1st to January 15th, donation bins will be located at the Estes Valley Library, Estes Park Elementary, Mid-

dle, and High School, as well as at the National Park Village. The Rotary and Interact are dedicated to helping the community in any way we can. All funds from recycling the Christmas lights will go straight back to the community. Interact is currently focused on donating to the National Parks Service through current and past fundraising, and you can be a part of that!

Got A Light?

We were anything but an affluent family when I was growing up. Money was always tight and my mom sacrificed a lot to make sure I had what I needed. But somehow, Mom always figured out how to turn our little house into a winter wonderland at Christmas time.

I have vivid memories crawling under the Christmas tree and looking up through the branches at the lights. Ah, the smell of fresh pine and the glow of those big hunky bulbs shining their light off the ornaments. It was pure magic. At this time of year, I still love sitting in our living room with just the Christmas lights from the tree and garland Miss Sherie has so lovingly decorated. If I close my eyes I can flash back to those wonder years on Kentucky Avenue.

This is the season of lights, symbolizing hope, joy, and peace. From a faith perspective, lights symbolize Jesus Christ, the “light” of the world. Jesus brings hope by His birth into this world and conquering darkness and sin. The magi followed the light emanating from a star in the east and found Jesus lying in a manger. They discovered the Savior of the world laying in a feed trough as a makeshift cradle in a stable or cave where Mary and Joseph found lodging because there was no room for them anywhere else. This isn’t exactly the entrance one would expect for the Savior of the world. All the more reason to ponder

where Jesus ranks in your life.

God’s Word says a lot about light.

“God said, let there be light, and there was light.” “I am the light of the world.” “Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

“Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of the world.” “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

In spite of all the stuff of life pressing in on us, let’s let our light shine. If you feel surrounded by darkness my prayer is that someone will share their light with you.

Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Got a light? Share it.

A Bike For Christmas By: Tom Rogers

It’s funny how parents continually want their kids to know how rough they had it learning life’s lessons and don’t miss a chance to tell their offspring, in great detail mind you, of the heroic trials of their own childhoods.

And yet they struggle mightily every day to keep their own kids from going through those same life experiences.

Anyway, this is the story of how a smart-aleck, (my Dad would have used the more colorful term), baby-boomer kid got one-upped by his depressionera Dad. My Dad was always pretty quiet and not one to engage in verbal volleyball or quick comebacks. He was, however, one to keep his kids in line and was ready and able to take them down a notch or two verbally or physically if the necessity or opportunity presented itself.

One such opportunity came at Christmas, a time of relative plenty though not luxury in our mid-sixties household. Dad liked to make us appreciate what we had by making us feel a little guilty for having it. He often related how, as kids, he and his brothers and sisters didn’t really see a big difference between the days before the Great Depression and during it. They were perpetually dirt poor and though they generally had enough to eat on the farm, cornmeal mush got a little tiresome for my Dad and he hated the taste of plain rice from the thirties till the day he died. Maybe they moved from the poor farm to a poorer one during the depression, but that was about the extent of contrast, according to him.

In any case, one glorious day he got a bicycle. Someone’s junk bike was hardly new and lacked handle bars but my Dad, who was born with pliers, ingenuity, and more talent in his hands than I have in my whole being, quickly converted an old drain pipe to fit the worn out two-wheeler. It was quite a restoration for a pre-teen but he was more appreciative of his fortune than

proud of his mechanical accomplishment and never failed to tell the story to his children as they were about to be presented with bicycles of their own.

One Christmas, as I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of Santa Claus and a much asked for and coveted English race bike with real hand brakes, Dad once again dusted off his depression stories, which heaped guilt equally well at birthdays as well as other gift receiving occasions. And thus, on Christmas Eve, as I sat at his feet by the lovingly decorated tree, he began the long and arduous process of telling me how it was in the good old bad days back during the depression.

Now, I had heard that bike story more than a handful of times since I was the youngest of three, and as the spoiled baby brother of two older saintly sisters, I was not above showing my impatience and disdain for hand-me-down anecdotes. So just as Dad got into high gear about the dismal but meaningful Christmas of 1932, I cut him off at the knees with one of those kid comments that just kind of slips out. It was one of those remarks you immediately wish you could catch and retrieve and you also know in that moment that its expression will bring swift retribution.

“I know, I know,” I said with great boredom and continued in a sing-song voice, “That’s the year you got the drain pipe handle bar bike and you were grateful forever. Right?”

Dad sat back in his easy chair with a kind of subtle, disagreeable look, like he had just tasted soapsuds in his favorite pipe. It was one of those moments that you know you had, but wished you hadn’t won the battle of words and I immediately felt bad and momentarily, if not fleetingly, wished he’d even retaliate with his family-famous back-hand. At least then the justice would be swifter than the prolonged torture of the lecture.

But just as quickly his face changed from a wounded martyr to the strongwilled life instructor I knew so well.

“No”, he said looking at me thoughtfully, quietly, and straight on, “That’s the year I got the orange.”

Once, years later, when I had my own kids, we laughed heartily at a TV comedian’s joke about being perplexed with his own parents for saying they had had only dirt to eat during the depression but that they were SO grateful to have it. I recalled for my Dad how he had made me feel a little ashamed and had gotten the best of me that Christmas so long ago and how ever since then he was pretty much undefeated by his thickly educated but thinly experienced son.

Dad just smiled.

Margaret Carol Mendoza Margaret Carol Mendoza, a loving wife and devoted mother, passed away peacefully at her home just outside of Estes Park with her family by her side on December 9th, 2025.

Margaret was born November 30th, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Walter and Glayds Wright. She first came to Estes Park at the age of 15 and became a full-time resident in 1984. She worked at Safeway for many years and after retirement Margaret enjoyed her bridge and mahjong clubs, but most of all, she loved all her children.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Esteban Mendoza; daughters, Lela Price and Susan O’Neil; son, Eric Randall; and sonin-law, Scott Doan.

She is survived by children Marci Wittles (Kevin), Keelee Doan, Todd Randall (Lisa) and Jacobo Mendoza, and 13 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. On the Mendoza side, she is survived by Enedelia Mendoza, Graciela Sholler, Esteban and Deedre Mendoza, Gema and Scott Campell, Virgina and Don Liley, Rodney O’Neil Joe and Mae Mendoza, Miranda and Juan Salazar, as well as 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
