The Town of Estes Park's free Christmas tree drop-off site will be open Mondays through Fridays beginning December 29th, from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The site will be open through January 16th. Please note the drop-off site will be closed New Year’s Day. The drop-off will be located at the Community Drive entrance to the Estes Park Events Complex/Fairgrounds; follow

the signs to the fenced drop-off location. Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel, and other decorations. No wreaths, garland, artificial trees, or tree stands will be accepted. Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the

identified area. Dropping trees after hours or in other locations will be considered illegal dumping and may be subject to a fine.

The Town offers this free service as a convenience and cost-saving measure for residents, with the added benefit of keeping discarded trees/slash out of the landscape. The trees are chipped and discarded in the Larimer County landfill. The high acidity of the chipped product makes it unsuitable for mulch or compost. Larimer County’s Heather O’Hayre Human Services Director Of The Year Larimer County’s Director of Human Services, Heather O’Hayre is the recipient of the 2025 Director of the Year Award from the Colorado Human Services Directors Association.

The Board of Larimer County Commissioners also celebrated and recognized O’Hayre at their Administrative Matters meeting on Tuesday, December 16th. CHSDA recognized her for her exceptional leadership, dedication to partnerships, and unwavering commitment and passion for strengthening services for children, families, and adults across Larimer County and Colorado.

“We know how crucial human services directors are, to be the shield of champions for our staff who are working so hard in difficult situations — especially now,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody ShadduckMcNally. “You ensure the need of our most vulnerable residents remain at the forefront of our state policy.”

The CHSDA is a nonprofit association that represents social/human serv-

ices directors from across the state of Colorado, encouraging self-sufficiency for families and communities and protecting vulnerable children and adults.

O’Hayre’s leadership has resulted in transformative results in Larimer County Human Services, advocating for the most vulnerable in our community, while being at the forefront of programmatic and policy decisions at the state level.

“I can’t think of a better person to sit next to in meetings, since you are the voice of reason and understand these policies so well. It’s no surprise you were nominated for this award. A state-wide leader in this space,” said Larimer County Commissioner Kristin Stephens.

With over 20 years in human and social services, her experience is farreaching, touching many aspects of human and social services, including child welfare, juvenile justice, and outcomes for vulnerable groups in our community.

On December 15th, police served a misdemeanor traffic arrest warrant to a 26-year-old male at 408 Elm Avenue.

He was booked and released.

On December 16th, police stopped a 29-year-old male at 1600 Fish Hatchery Road. He was cited for driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, driving a vehicle with blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above, and drinking from/possessing an open alcoholic beverage container.

On December 16th, police stopped a 34-year-old male at 1836 Wildfire Road for driving a vehicle while under the in-

fluence of alcohol. He was booked and released.

On December 19th, police stopped a 43-year-old male at 615 Community Drive for driving a vehicle with blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above. He was booked and released.

On December 21st, police arrested a 65-year-old male in the area of 17001853 Big Thompson Avenue for violation of a protection order. He was transported to Larimer County Jail.

The charge(s) are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

EVFPD firefighters generally respond to medical calls in their personal vehicles, allowing for a faster response. On other incidents, firefighters respond to a fire station to respond in department apparatus with specialized equipment.

Larimer County’s Ricardo Perez Receives 2025 Brendan Unitt Community Service Award Larimer County Office of Emergency Management coordinator Ricardo Perez is the recipient of the 2025 Brendan Unitt Community Service Award.

The Board of Larimer County Commissioners celebrated Perez’s work in the community, particularly in underserved communities, finding ways to help improve their lives. In his work role, Ricardo helps to fill in the gaps in preparedness and resources for those communities.

With his bilingual language skills, Perez has been able to reach out to those in underserved communities, assess what their needs are, and then work toward fulfilling those needs. He has volunteered in several community projects, including serving on the La Familia Board and working toward improving the lives of youth.

Perez noticed that children in a local mobile home park were playing soccer in a dirt field with no equipment or fencing for their safety. Being a former professional soccer player, he began working with his connections, leaders in the mobile home community and a variety of partners to donate equipment, netting,

and other accessories to transform the field into a new soccer park. “By building the soccer field, you made those kids feel special,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally. “That’s something you can’t put a price tag on.”

Building the soccer field enhanced the neighborhood even more. “The sense of joy that you gave to the kids to have a real soccer field instead of a flat piece of land and have something that was worthy of them — you saw that need and reached out to people and made it happen,” said Larimer County Commissioner Kristen Stephens.

Not being one to slow down, Perez is now working to create the Ricardo Perez Youth Soccer Program that will help pay for soccer supplies and equipment, and build more soccer fields for youth, as well as continuing in philanthropy.

The Brendan Unitt Award is named after a Larimer County Ranger who lost his life attempting to save distressed boaters at Horsetooth Reservoir. In addition to his job as a ranger, Unitt spent many hours volunteering his time in countless public service jobs in the community.

LCSO Spring 2026 Citizens Academy Applications Open

Chamber Hosts ‘Un’ Book Club Join us for a truly special and unique gathering of our ‘Un’ Book Club, where meaningful conversation takes center stage. This session will be led by Shannon Jones, General Manager of YMCA of the Rockies, whose leadership journey powerfully embodies the principles of Red Shoes Living. His perspective and real-world experience will set this discussion apart and offer valuable insight for our local business community.

The ‘Un’ Book Club meets quarterly and is designed to bring business owners together to explore pivotal topics impacting Estes Valley businesses. The goal is to learn from one another’s experiences, openly share challenges and successes, and support

each other in growing stronger, more resilient businesses faster.

For Quarter 1, our reading selection is Red Shoes Living by Lonnie Mayne.

This winter, we are diving into the core ideas of the book and how they translate into leadership, culture, and accountability in real-life organizations.

Hermit Park Winter Closure

As of December 21st, 2025, Hermit Park Open Space is closed for the winter season. The open space will re-open weather permitting March 1st, 2026.

The Larimer County Sheriff ’s Office is now accepting applications for the Spring 2025 Citizens Academy. This informational program will start on February 10th and run through May 5th.

Classes will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday nights for 12 classes, and one Saturday field day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No classes are scheduled for the week of Spring Break.

The academy is designed to give community members an in-depth perspective on LCSO operations. After kicking off with an introduction to the Sheriff and his command staff, topics will include: • Patrol Operations • K9 Program • Bomb Squad/Terrorism • Frauds and Scams • Major Case Investigations • Crime Scene Investigation • Wildland Firefighting • Search and Rescue/Dive Rescue • SWAT/AHCR and Hostage Negotiations • Dispatch • School Resource Officers

• Jail Operations and Programs • Drug Task Force The classes are presented by deputies, commanders, and professional staff leaders responsible for each area. One of the highlights of the academy is field day, where students get to participate in live scenarios. The scenarios include responding to calls that involve shooting with simulated ammunition, making traffic stops, and actively participating in exercises similar to situations that we frequently respond to.

The academy capacity is limited and fills up fast. All applicants must be at least 18 years old and a resident or business owner in Larimer County.

Due to the depth of information and facility access during this program, participants may not have misdemeanor convictions within the last three years or any felony convictions.

RMNP Announces Opening Of 2026 Artist-in-Residence & Scholar-in-Residence Program Applications Rocky Mountain National Park and the Rocky Mountain Conservancy are pleased to announce that the summer 2026 Artist-In-Residence and Scholarin-Residence Programs began accepting applications on Monday, December 15th, 2025.

RMNP’s Artist-in-Residence program is open to artists of all creative disciplines and genres. Interested artists are invited to apply. Selected artists will serve in a two-week residency within Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer season. During their residency, selected artists will reside in a rustic cabin located inside RMNP where the artists can gain inspiration and create artistic works. Participating artists will also host and facilitate two public programs for audiences of all

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The panel will select up to six artists to participate in the 2026 Artist-in-Residence program. Selected artists will be notified in April, and upon selection, the artist will be able to choose a time block for their two-week residency from a list of available options.

Selected artists will stay at the William Allen White Cabin, a rustic, historic cabin located near Moraine Park. During their residency, artists will have the opportunity to explore the park, gain inspiration, share their art with the public, and create new works. At the completion of their residency, the artists will donate a fully furnished piece of work representative of their stay to the Rocky Mountain Conservancy. Rocky Mountain Conservancy will hold the rights to the piece of work and the National Park Service will have the right to share the donated works with the public.

Town Prepares For April 7th Municipal Election; Candidate Forum Scheduled For January 6th The Town of Estes Park will hold the next regular Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 7th, 2026 to elect three trustee seats on the Board of Trustees.

Voters will determine who will occupy seats currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Marie Cenac, Trustees Bill Brown and Kirby Hazelton. Mayor Pro Tem Cenac is term limited. The other two Trustees are eligible to run for one of the three four-year terms.

For individuals who are interested in learning more about becoming a candidate, the Town Clerk will offer a candidate information forum on January 6th, 2026 at 6 p.m. in the Town Board Room of Town Hall, at 170 MacGregor Ave. This forum will include a review of the candidate packet, including candidate eligibility, nomination instructions, the nomination petition, Fair Campaign Practices Act instructions, expectations of time commitment and the role of a Board member.

Registered electors 18 years of age or older may be a candidate and hold office if they have resided inside Town

limits for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding April 7th, 2026. Candidate packets will be available at the Town Clerk’s office, Room 130 of Town Hall on or after January 6th, 2026 and nomination petitions may be circulated beginning the same day. The petition must be signed by at least 10 registered electors who reside inside Town limits. The filing deadline for nomination petitions is January 26th, 2026 at 5 p.m.

Given continued forecasts for high winds, the Town of Estes Park would like to share some important reminders.

If you see a downed power line, stay clear and call 9-1-1.

Before reporting a power outage, please check the real-time outage map at tinyurl.com/EPOutageMap. Our system immediately alerts us to the vast majority of power outages. When an area is shown on the outage map, we are already responding and there is no need to report the outage. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Did you know you can sign up to receive email or text alerts for power outages and service restoration at specific addresses? Use your utility account number(s) and service address(es) to sign up at notifier.estes.org.

When multiple outages are occurring, typically due to weather-related events, our crews must prioritize their response by the types of services affected, such as schools and hospitals, followed by the number of people affected.

Residents who require oxygen or other electric-powered medical equipment should have a 24-hour backup plan in case of any type of emergency.

This concert will include music from James Taylor, The Eagles, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, and a bit of John Denver on Saturday, January 10th, 2026, at 7 p.m. at Estes Park High School Auditorium.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for shopping of our baked goods and craft items available for donations. The concert supports our Scholarship Fund, baked

goods and crafts support our other philanthropic works.

Recycle Holiday Lights With Interact & Rotary Attention Estes Park! The Christmas season is approaching, and with it come decorations, lights, and even more decorations. The Estes Valley Sunrise Rotary is partnering with the Estes Park Middle and High School Interact Club to recycle Christmas lights this holiday season.

So, whether your lights won’t turn on, or they go out halfway through the season, come drop them off!

Through January 15th, donation bins will be located at the Estes Valley Library, Estes Park Elementary, Middle,

and High School, as well as at the National Park Village. The Rotary and Interact are dedicated to helping the community in any way we can.

All funds from recycling the Christmas lights will go straight back to the community. Interact is currently focused on donating to the National Parks Service through current and past fundraising, and you can be a part of that! We hope to see your lights soon!

There is something wondrous about fresh snow on a cold winter day. For one, we desperately need the precipitation so when we get it in our neck of the woods, we sigh deeply with relief.

But the wonder I’m referring to is from snow days when we were young, when school was canceled and the sparkling white world outside the window caused us to jump with glee. This was why snow pants, snow boots, scarves and mittens were invented.

The first thing I’d do when I stepped into the virgin snow was to tromp out a love message to Mom, who would see it looking down from the kitchen window. I’d create either a big heart or an “ILY” or a snow angel topped by “MOM" spelled out with my bootprints. (These days I stomp a path for the dog to follow when he needs to make yellow snow. It’s not the same as an “ILY” although I do do this for Chance out of love.)

Fifty-plus years ago we ice skated in Illinois when we lived near a park with a lake. Once the snow was cleared, we could rent skates and glide about, hearing the cracks and pops deep below the thick ice, which I always found a bit unnerving. What if the ice broke and I

fell in? I skated cautiously but still enjoyed it.

We could sip hot chocolate in the warming hut when our ankles started to give out or when we’d fallen one too many times. There was always someone who knew what they were doing out on the ice so we’d watch as they dipped and whirled on the glistening glaze, leaving flourishes etched in the ice. And there was usually a pick-up hockey game at one end of the lake, where guys would skate like the wind and slap the puck with gusto while elbowing each other out of the way.

When we moved to Nebraska we no longer had ice nearby to skate on but we had good sledding hills. And we had snow! Several feet of the stuff.

When we had multi-generational family sledding parties, we used the classic wooden sled with metal runners and later, plastic saucers. We never had a toboggan because we’d heard too many stories of people who broke their backs flying uncontrollably down a hill on a toboggan.

When we got too cold to feel our fingers and toes and our cheeks were wind-whipped red, we trudged home, where Dad’s glasses fogged up as soon

This national program brings together teams of students and educators dedicated to transforming their schools into more equitable, inclusive, and engaging learning environments.

The Changemaker Cohort is about reimagining what's possible in schools.

The Changemaker Cohort is a unique professional development experience designed for student–educator pairs who are committed to creating meaningful change in their local contexts.

Over the course of the one-year program, participants will engage in intensive, hands-on sessions focused on leadership development, equity-driven school improvement, and strategies to strengthen belonging for all students.

as he stepped inside. Steam rose from our wet snow-clothes as we stripped down to our long johns. We were tired but happy as we replayed the afternoon—that one wipe-out nephew Jeff had and the time we got three people on the sled and then we tipped over.

I dream of those diamond snow days as I look out the window today and see dry, bare ground. In the big picture, I’m not a fan of the cold. I like to hibernate in the winter—hunkering in with books and art projects and tea and afghans. But fresh snow on a cold winter day—that is a wonder I can’t ignore. If the snow is packable, I’m ready to build a snowman!

Here is a poem by one of my favorite poets, George Bilgere, who captures the pure pleasure of such a snowy day.

But I want death to be like my father in his big boots and heavy sweater, lifting down my sled for winter, taking me with him into the day.

The Estes Nonprofit Network is inviting nonprofit partners, community stakeholders, donors, and funders to participate in our annual community survey, Imagining the Estes Valley Nonprofit Community in 2026.

In past years, your feedback has meaningfully shaped our direction, programming, and outreach. This year’s survey builds on that foundation while also inviting reflection on what is working today and what support, connection, education, and collective action could look like for the Estes Valley nonprofit community in the years ahead.

What this survey entails: The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and includes a mix of reflection and forward-looking questions. Responses are confidential and reviewed in aggregate, and candid feedback is both welcome and encouraged.

Why Now? The nonprofit landscape continues to evolve, and this is an important moment to pause, listen, and plan intentionally for what our nonprofit community needs next.

EP Rotary Accepting Organization Applications For 2026 Duck Race The Rotary Club of Estes Park (Noon Rotary) has begun preparations for the Great Estes Park Rotary Duck Race to be held on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026. It is time for participating organizations to sign up!

The 2025 Duck Race Festival was a great success. Over $204,000 was donated to our 74 participating organizations through duck adoptions. Thank you to all the organizations that sold adoptions and supported the event. The race awarded nearly 400 prizes, including a grand prize of $10,000 in cash, to excited winners! Once again, this year’s race will be held live on the river, and adoptions will be available online.

Participating organizations need to complete the online application form

by January 31st, 2026, by going to epduckrace.org/organization-signup.

Organizations that have changed their contact person or will not be participating this year are asked to contact Rotary. Qualifying organizations will have their names listed online at epduckrace.org and will receive $23 for every $25 duck adoption they sell.

Organizations selected will need to have a local presence and provide a

benefit to the local community. Organizations and associations may either hold a valid 501c3 or 501c4 tax status with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service or be deemed to benefit the local community.

Each organization must sell at least $625 in duck adoptions (equivalent of 25 single duck adoptions or five Quack Packs.)

At least one adult volunteer from each group will be needed to help with the race. This person may be asked to work on Race Day or earlier.

Kickoff and Instructions Night will take place on February 19th, 2026, at the American Legion at 6 p.m. An 8foot table is offered on a first-come, first-served basis on race day in the Visitor Center parking lot finish line to promote your organization.

Volunteers can choose the job that suits them. Some choices are river security, merchant prize collection, poster distribution, starting line and finish line assistance, and other activities. Some volunteers will be needed prior to Race Day. Please contact Rotary at organizations@epduckrace.org for more information.

Whimsadoodle Announces Stewardship Of Historic Park Theatre Whimsadoodle Inc. proudly announces the investment in and future stewardship of the Historic Park Theatre from longtime owners and operators Jenna MacGregor and her mother, Sharon Seeley, continuing a cherished family legacy that began in 1968 with Mickey and Ola Stanger.

This transition marks an exciting new chapter for one of Estes Park’s most beloved cultural landmarks.

The Historic Park Theatre is widely recognized as the oldest single-house motion picture theatre in the United States originally built as a movie theatre and still continuously operating.

Today, the Park Theatre is not only a centerpiece of downtown Estes Park, it is a nationally recognized cultural treasure.

Originally constructed in 1913

by J.L. Jackson and completed

by C.H. Bond, the theatre has stood as a gathering place for generations. In 1928, owner Ralph Gwynn added the iconic tower, creating what locals now affectionately call the “Tower of Love.” Today, the tower remains a star attraction in the mountain town and one of the

most photographed and recognizable features of downtown Estes Park and a glowing symbol of the town’s creative spirit.

For generations, the Stanger family has preserved the warmth, character, and community-centered mission of the Park Theatre. Today, that legacy continues through Jenna MacGregor and Sharon Seeley, whose dedication has kept the theatre thriving yearround as a gathering place for film, live performances, and shared community experiences.

“We are incredibly grateful to Jenna and Sharon for their years of stewardship and for entrusting the future of this treasured place to Whimsadoodle,” said Walter Dietrich, President of Whimsadoodle Inc. “Their care and commitment have ensured the Park Theatre remains a living, breathing part of our downtown and our shared heritage.”

Looking Ahead: A Creative Future Rooted in Community Whimsadoodle Inc. has reached an agreement to invest in the next chapter of the Historic Park Theatre, with plans to begin thoughtful renovations in the spring. These updates will honor the soul of the theatre while preparing it to serve future generations with enhanced facilities, expanded programming, and increased accessibility.

Whimsadoodle Inc. is more than an arts organization, it is the living legacy

of Barb Marshall, a passionate advocate for the arts and a tireless champion for Estes Park’s creative community. Barb believed the true heartbeat of a town is found in its artists, storytellers, performers, and makers. Following her sudden passing in 2024, her vision continues through Whimsadoodle, the foundation she built to ensure arts and culture remain central to the life of Estes Park.

“I have the profound privilege and honor of leading Whimsadoodle, the foundation created by Barb Marshall to support the arts and artists of Estes Park,” said Dietrich. “Stepping into stewardship of the Historic Park Theatre is a responsibility we carry with deep respect, for the families who came before us, for the community who loves this place, and for Barb’s vision of a vibrant, creative Estes Park.”

Under Whimsadoodle’s care, the Historic Park Theatre will continue to operate as a dynamic, multi-use cultural venue supporting film, live music, theatre, special events, and community programming while strengthening its role as a creative anchor in the heart of downtown.

Before heading out into the backcountry, make sure that everyone in your group is avalanche aware. If recreating in these areas, all members of your party are advised to have rescue equipment, education and experience to make informed decisions about traveling in avalanche terrain. Thinking about going sledding? Sledding conditions inside RMNP are currently poor. There is very little snow and exposed bare ground on the Hidden Valley Sledding Hill.

Planning to visit Rocky Mountain National Park for Christmas? It is a great time to get outside and enjoy the beauty of winter. The park is open, but some visitor services will be closed in honor of the holiday.

Fall River, Beaver Meadows and Kawuneeche Visitor Centers and the Information Office will be closed on Thursday, December 25th. The RMNP Wilderness Office will be closed December 24th, 25th, and 26th.

If planning for wilderness overnight backpacking trips beginning on December 26th, please call 970-586-1242 to make arrangements to pick up your permit.

If visiting when the entrance stations are unstaffed, park entrance fees can be paid using automated fee machines.

Interested in going camping? Campsites are available on a first-come, first served basis at Moraine Park Campground.

Third Annual First Peoples Festival Celebrates Indigenous Culture In Estes Park January 17–18, 2026 | 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Estes Park Events Complex The First Peoples Festival will return to Estes Park on January 17th and 18th, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Estes Park Events Complex. This annual event brings together Indigenous communities, residents, and visitors to celebrate and honor Native American cultures through art, music, dance, film, fashion, and storytelling.

The festival will feature a High-End Indigenous Vendors and Artists Marketplace, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship from Native artists representing 15 different federally recognized tribes.

The First Peoples Fashion Show, taking place on January 17th, 2026, at the Estes Park Events Center, will feature Indigenous Designers from across North America who will present collections that blend traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, telling stories through every thread and design. The festival will also host an Indigenous Film Symposium at the Estes Valley Community Center.

Angels Among Us: A Celebration Of Community Spirit At EVICS Christmas Family Night

At the EVICS Family Resource Center, our mission is to nurture the well-being of every family in Estes Park. This year, planning our annual Christmas Family Night had two central goals: to provide the most joyful and memorable experience possible, and to have every family leave saying, "I can't wait for next year!" For the over 100 attendees who joined us, the night was a resounding success.

My years of coordinating events and programs, combined with my cultural upbringing, laid the foundation for our hospitality. Growing up, Hmong gatherings taught me a simple but profound rule: the food must be abundant and excellent, ensuring that guests always felt welcomed and cherished.

This year, we were determined to meet that standard while delivering a spectacular experience.

The preparation for this event became

a testament to the generosity of our town—a beautiful illustration of the "Angels Among Us" in Estes Park.

The final piece of the puzzle—the catering—was resolved with immense relief and grace. Days before the event, the kind owners of La Cocina De Mama, including Miguel, agreed to cater the evening. Their commitment ensured that every family enjoyed not just plenty of food, but high-quality, delicious warmth that nourished the body and soul.

In the final 48 hours, our village materialized. Pam Leitner confirmed several of her friends would join the volunteer team, and a mother and daughter enthusiastically offered to manage the Hot Cocoa bar. The wonderful students from Eagle Rock High School would also be in attendance to help serve. These were quiet acts of goodness that built the foundation of our night.

mosphere was transformed into a festive dream, thanks to the generosity of the Presbyterian Church for the use of their facility. Pam Leitner and Greg Leitner arrived with an incredible collection of decorations, turning the hall into a wonderland with custom centerpieces, red linens, and twinkling lanterns.

They truly poured their hearts into making the space magnificent for our families.

As the doors opened, the evening unfolded into pure magic. Our official Santa Claus, Tim Orel, arrived ready to take requests, and professional Photographer Michelle Tapia was on hand, capturing every smile and memory.

The air was filled with joyful laughter, amplified by a surprise appearance from the Newcomers Toy Soldiers and Elves. The children were thrilled when Kirt the Toy Soldier marched in, followed by the elves and Santa, to kick off the Christmas Limbo. The kids loved it so much that shouts for "Round Two!" echoed through the hall.

Later, the Eagle Rock students helped create a marvelous moment by gently "making it rain" with 60 red and white balloons for the Keepy-Uppy dance.

The children exploded with excitement, chasing the bouncing balloons, and absolutely refused to let the music and dancing stop.

The success of Christmas Family Night was not just a measure of abundant food and smooth logistics; it was

a reflection of the genuine warmth and community spirit that created a truly joyful experience. Seeing the parents engaged and the children beaming with unbridled excitement was the greatest reward. It was the staff, the families, and, most importantly, the Angels Among Us who made the experience one we hope families remember all year long.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the individuals and organizations whose kindness created this beautiful evening. There’s Still Time To Give In 2025 It’s the week of Christmas, and there’s still a few more things to do before we unwrap presents on Thursday. Crossroads will be open on Monday and Tuesday, but will be closed the rest of the week. We will open back up on Monday and Tuesday with reduced staffing, but enough to serve neighbors who need our help. I’m thankful we have staff and volunteers who are stepping up to serve on these days. 2025 is coming to a close and as we look back over the past 12 months, we can celebrate the good work that has been done through the hundreds of people who have joined hearts and hands with us to take good care of our neighbors.

The cost of expanding services to meet the needs of our neighbors is real, and we have a strong desire to continue offering wraparound services. I’m not sure where you’re at in your giving for 2025, but we would like to help you take full advantage of charitable giving benefits as you get ready to file your taxes.

duo, Share the Road, plays a wide variety of songs, including folk tunes, Americana, Great American Songbook pieces, Broadway melodies, rock & roll, and other genres. They both play in the rock & roll band Buster & the Boomers, which will be the opening act for the third year in a row at the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival in March in Estes Park. They play at many places around town with those musical groups, including from time to time at the American Legion, Elk Meadow, Lumpy Ridge Brewery, Full Throttle, Cousin Pat's, and other venues. Gary's played in many other bands in and around Estes, including with Nick Molle, the Mountain Town Rockers, the Blue Sky Mountain Band, Amplified Souls, and others.

Linda & Gary have lived in Estes since 2003, moving here after both of their daughters completed their college careers. They've run many hundreds of road races over the years, and they climbed all the Colorado 14,000-foot peaks between 2004 and 2012, calling themselves "Peak Partners" in that ven-

ture. They still hike throughout the year so you're likely to encounter them on the trails from time to time. Gary is currently the Mayor of the Town of Estes Park and Linda is the Membership Secretary for the Trail Trekkers hiking group. She also sings with the Estes Park Oratorio under the direction of Denise Stookesberry and was privileged to sing at Carnegie Hall with the EP Chorale in 2024. How About A Piece Of Peace?

Want a radical idea for your “New Year’s Resolution?” Want to make it a “New Year’s REVOLUTION” instead?

This one is easy peezy and there’s no gym membership required, no Doritos or ice cream withdrawals and no stepping on the scale with your eyes squinted. Ya ready? Celebrate Christmas every day! That’s rad.

Now, I’m not suggesting you leave up all the Christmas decorations unless you want to.

There are some folks who actually do that and I think it’s pretty awesome. And time saving. What I’m suggesting is that we keep the Christmas mindset going each and every day. What’s the downside? A little more joy, gratitude and peace in your life?

I bet over 80% of the churches who had a candlelight service on Christmas Eve sang “Silent Night” as the closing song. The last line includes the lyrics, “sleep in heavenly peace” and when you think about it, who doesn’t want that? With all the crazy stuff happening in our world, who wouldn’t welcome a deeply calm, untroubled and protected rest? How about trading in tossing and turning and grabbing a piece of piece?

While “sleep in heavenly peace” from “Silent Night” most likely refers to baby Jesus sleeping peacefully I think it can apply to us as well. The key is the One the song refers to—Jesus. No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus, know peace!

Normal folks desire tranquility, divine protection for all, and being free from

fear and anxiety. Heavenly peace transcends any temporary peace from this world. It implies a blessed sleep, a surrender of worries to God, and a state of spiritual rest which can only happen when we have the hope and trust of eternal peace. The hope and trust of true eternal peace only comes through Jesus. He loves you, died for you and wants a personal relationship with you. Do you know Him? Men on Fire (MOF) meets every Saturday at the American Legion at 8 a.m. MOF is a brotherhood of men dedicated to continuing to grow in our personal relationship with Jesus.

“Ya see, we’ve found Him but we want to know Him better than anyone else in our life.”

Harvest Farm Recovery Program Having Long-Term, Positive Impact In Larimer County

Participants graduating at record rates; 93% remain in stable housing a year later Turning east onto dusty County Road 66 in Wellington, Colorado, Jorda didn’t know what to expect of his first experience in a recovery program.

What he found at Harvest Farm surprised him.

“Pulling in, you’re greeted by Charlie the llama,” a white and gray, wooly camelid who strides up to the fence near the front office and makes friends with those who stop to visit – or simply park nearby.

Then, about 15 to 20 staff and program participants formed an impromptu line and introduced themselves to the 26-year-old Larimer County resident. Behavioral Health Services is using only first names of participants to protect their privacy.

“It was very, very, very welcoming,” he said, and a stark contrast to the institutional recovery center he imagined. So he settled in for the journey ahead.

“I just showed up and trusted God to take the wheel.”

Jorda is one of 75 men who, as of mid-October 2025, live and work on the 100-acre farm and recovery center operated by the Fort Collins Rescue Mission, under the umbrella of the Denver Rescue Mission.

As part of the New Life Program, men focus on breaking the cycles of addiction, homelessness or both. Over the course of nine months to one year, they receive counseling, develop critical life skills, obtain sustainable housing and jobs and, generally, find solace in life and work on the farm.

“It does work. This place works,” said Roger, who took a break from tending to grapefruit, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, and onions in the greenhouse to share some of his story. “This is a good place for anyone who wants to straighten up.”

Roger, 62, had been to rehabilitation, or “rehab,” three times in his life before he found “the farm.” Through those stints, he learned the typical 30- or 60day programs weren’t enough. He needed something more – something like Harvest Farm – to get sober and start to heal.

Substance-use disorder, or addiction, doesn't discriminate based on age, race, spirituality or income. Jorda and Roger are two among about 40.3 million people, ages 12 years and older, who reportedly have a substance-use disorder in the U.S., national data show.

The disease is treatable but often brings with it layers of complexity and hardship for the people suffering from it. It also demands a commitment to treatment.

“This program is good therapy,” Roger said, reflecting on his two months at Harvest Farm thus far. “If you can get through this, you can get

through anything.”

The ‘why’ behind the work Anyone who tours the farm with Kyle McPherson, senior director for Northern Colorado, can tell he is deeply invested in the people he serves and the broader community.

On a windy October afternoon, he talked with an almost reverence about the men of Harvest Farm, as well as the staff, whose work started roughly 35 years ago.

Wellington had no stoplights and talk of addiction was taboo when the Denver Rescue Mission purchased the rural property, located about 70 miles from its city-based shelter. All of that made it “incredibly ambitious” and “visionary,” McPherson said, for the Mission to buy the farm, intending to provide recovery services there for those experiencing homelessness.

Although it’s not a requirement to be in the program, being without permanent, stable housing is something many of the men have in common.

“I was definitely drinking myself to being alone and on the street,” said Jorda, who feels blessed that it didn’t become his reality like so many of his Harvest Farm roommates.

“The amount of fear they have is absurd,” he said, from surviving with no food for days at a time to being robbed of all their belongings.

As he has listened to and learned from others, Jorda said those experiencing homelessness and addiction: “They’re all just people.” They are healthcare workers and members of the military, like him. They are neighbors and spouses, CEOs and frontline workers.

“You are all one bad paycheck or bad happenstance from being homeless,” he said.

Leah Guerrero, case management supervisor with Harvest Farm, said it’s a common misconception that being homelessness or having an addiction is “a choice.” In reality, it’s more complicated.

The science of addiction tells us a person’s desire for drugs or alcohol vastly outweighs their desire for even food or water. That substance use over time fundamentally changes the brain, as explained in this Changing Minds Larimer campaign video, and cravings can continue for even two years after a person is in recovery.

On top of that, other factors may come into play.

Every man at Harvest Farm takes an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) assessment that looks at the number of stressful or traumatic events (called ACEs) experienced by children under the age of 18. These go beyond normal life stressors and include things like abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, or having a family member with a substance-abuse disorder.

epnews.com Continued from previous page The more ACEs a person has, the greater their risk for chronic health conditions, mental illness, and substance abuse in adulthood.

The highest possible score is 10 out of 10. Among the 75 men currently at Harvest Farm, the average number of ACEs is six.

“These are kids who were abused and terribly treated,” McPherson said.

“We’re just trying to give these kids the love they deserved.”

Life at Harvest Farm What makes Harvest Farm’s New Life Program unique – aside from its plethora of pigs – is the lack of a price tag.

Because there is no cost, thanks to donations and grants, the farm becomes a real option for men who can’t afford alternatives.

The length of stay at an inpatient rehabilitation center varies but is typically 30 to 60 days; depending on the location, length of stay, and center, the cost can range from $5,000 to $80,000, according to the American Addiction Centers.

“It makes it significantly easier for people to get the help,” said Guerrero.

During their stay at Harvest Farm, men do individual and group therapy with clinicians on-site and can meet with a psychiatrist for medication management. They attend Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and are rooted in the community

through sober activities, from Bible study groups to knitting clubs. In some cases, they get to do things they never have before – even as children –, like playing mini golf.

A key component of their recovery is working at least 20 hours a week on the farm. They might build furniture as part of maintenance duty, prepare meals in the kitchen, feed the animals, or tend to the greenhouse that generates fruits and vegetables destined for their plates.

“Caring for a creature has intrinsic value,” said McPherson, and can be therapeutic. Not long after he said this, one of the men chased down a loose piglet and returned it to its pen – much to its chagrin.

After about two months at the farm, the men partake in a 10-week course, where they learn about anger management and self-awareness, build strong resumes, and how to budget and eliminate debt. These skills are key to the community-based work component of their recovery, during which they get a job and save money for housing after they leave Harvest Farm.

As a results-based program, each man must meet four criteria to graduate: Have income sufficient enough to support themselves, be rooted in the community, no longer engaging in destructive habits, and have stable housing.

Graduations have spiked in recent years, McPherson said, quickly pulling data up on his phone while riding shotgun on a driving tour of the farm.

There were 39 graduates in 2021, 46 in 2022, 45 in 2023, and 78 in 2024. Notably, 93% of those men remain housed a year later.

So what’s propelling their success?

The return on Larimer County’s investment Multiple things may have contributed to the increase in graduation rates. For one, program participants are getting therapeutic interventions – think of any strategy designed to improve a person's mental, emotional, or physical well-being – earlier into their stay at the farm.

But one thing, in particular, stands out: the farm’s growing peer support program.

Peers are people with shared lived experiences – such as living with a mental illness or recovering from substance

abuse – who provide emotional, social, or practical support to others going through something similar. In the case of Harvest Farm, they are six men who graduated from the program and chose to stay longer to support others in their recovery.

“I think it’s beneficial to see hope and progress,” Guerrero said.

The peer program started with three men who agreed to live in a designated house on the farm and serve as peers, meeting one-on-one with men and leading groups. To their credit, they advocated to make room for more peers by sharing space in the house.

The broader public view of those in recovery is “still a stigma of broken addicts. They view them as lost causes,” he said.

“I view them as exactly the opposite. I think they’re some of the strongest people. They may be a little broken when they come in, but then they build confidence and start giving back.”

Caddell is responsible for selecting peers through an application process that’s becoming more and more competitive, as more men want to take part.

He looks for guys who want to do it

The program is made possible, in part, through the Larimer County Behavioral Health Services Impact Fund Grant Program, which has distributed $17.7 million to 77 unique organizations in the past seven years. Larimer County awarded $100,000 to Harvest Farm in the 2025 grant cycle for peers to receive specialized training.

“We would not have started this program if it weren’t for Larimer County,” McPherson said, adding later, “It’s not lost on us the impact of this funding.”

Jared Caddell went through The New Life Program twice before he was ready to get sober. When he decided it was finally time to change, he returned to Harvest Farm during the COVID pandemic and graduated.

His heart and passion is in supporting “others going through it,” and he started as a program coordinator, working overnight and weekend shifts on the farm. Today, he’s come full circle and serves as the associate director

for the right reasons and are committed to being a stable role model, sharing knowledge about addiction and recovery, time management, interpersonal skills, finances, their relationship with God, and more. Last year alone, the peers helped 55 men get jobs after hours of interview coaching and resume building.

By investing behavioral health tax dollars in the peers – and all men at Harvest Farm, by extension – Caddell said recidivism goes down, men learn to be self-sufficient, and they become better people in society. This leads to lower rates of homelessness, substance use, and crime, he said.

Asked about moments that stand out, Caddell said he recently saw a daughter jump into her dad’s arms after a long time apart. Doing this work also means that people get their fathers, brothers, sons, employees, and friends back.

“That impact on society as a whole is huge,” Caddell said.

AA & Al-Anon Meetings Bobbe Sue Fletcher Palmer Bobbe Sue Fletcher Palmer died at home in Pueblo, CO on November 9th, 2025.

Bobbe Sue was born in Denver, CO, on December 6th, 1932 to Charles and Cora Fletcher. The family moved to Cherry Hills Village in 1939 where Bobbe attended the rural Cherry Hills school, going into Denver to attend South High School where she graduated in 1950. She attended Grinnell College in Iowa for two years and then graduated with a BA degree from the University of Denver in 1954. She taught English in junior high school in Norton, Kansas, from 1954 to 1955.

In 1955 she married the Reverend Robert J. Palmer and they moved to Saratoga, WY, where he served the first Saratoga Presbyterian Church. In the years following they lived in Riverton, WY, and Sheridan, WY where Robert served the local Presbyterian Churches.

In Riverton they adopted John Charles Palmer and Margaret Anne Palmer. When they moved to Sheridan they added Martin Joseph Palmer and Susan Elizabeth Palmer to the family.

During the years in Sheridan Bobbe Sue worked as a teachers’ aide in the local schools besides helping in the church in various capacities.

In 1982 the family moved to Juneau, AK, where Robert worked for the Presbytery of Alaska, as Anna Jackman Minister and general presbyter Bobbe Sue was his office manager and helped with various programs, especially with the Anna Jackman Ministry’s summer program of young volunteers who came to Alaska to do Vacation Bible schools in the outlying villages and lumber camps. The work there with the Native Alaskans in the villages was especially rewarding.

After Robert retired, he did interim

ministry in churches in Billings, MT, Ellenburg, WA, and in Anchorage, Eagle River, and Skagway, AK. He and Bobbe Sue lived briefly in all those places. In 2005 Bobbe and Robert moved to Estes Park, CO, to the good Samaritan Village where Bobbe continued to live after Robert died in 2009.

Bobbe enjoyed painting watercolors, and writing. She published a small book of short stories, entitled “Can this be home?” in 2016.

Bobbe Sue is survived by a sister, Codie Wilson; by three sons, John Charles Palmer of Pueblo, CO, Martin Joseph Palmer of Juneau, AK, and Kimball Morgan of Corte Madera, CA; and by one daughter, Margaret Anne O’Dell of Casper, WY. Daughter Susan Elizabeth Palmer and son David James Palmer preceded her in death. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Interment of cremains will be in the family plot in the Sheridan Memorial Cemetery in Sheridan, WY on a future date.
