When I began in my role as Head of School at Esperanza Academy this past July, I stepped into the leadership of a school emerging from its first decade of life. I chose to join the Esperanza family because I have spent my career dedicated to the belief that all students deserve an excellent education, and that adolescents, in particular, are at a pivotal juncture in their lives. I am excited by the opportunity to bring my love of middle school and all that I’ve learned about girls’ education to the Esperanza community, and excited to join you in supporting our students as they progress from little girls to confident, young women.

Sustaining and enhancing our impact requires an enormous, ongoing effort on all fronts; students, themselves, as well as their families, our teachers and staff, countless volunteers, our generous individual and institutional donors, and our Board of Trustees have stepped up in countless ways during this past year. This report is an acknowledgement of that devotion and an expression of our heartfelt gratitude.

It is a privilege to be a part of this remarkable school, and I have no doubt that our work is lifting our girls, their families, and the community of Lawrence to a brighter future. On and Off the Field THE THRILL OF VICTORY and the agony of defeat; working together as a team to score a goal; overcoming the odds to beat a tough opponent; pushing past your physical limits - these are common experiences for many children growing up in the United States; for Esperanza students however, opportunities to play organized sports are few and far between. When Esperanza launched our formal athletics program, almost none of our students had ever played organized sports before.

That all changed five years ago, with seed funding from the U.S. Soccer

Foundation, when Esperanza started our first soccer team. Since then, the athletics program has grown to accommodate all 62 students and is now a mandatory part of an Esperanza education. These days, going to practice or getting psyched up for their next game is just an everyday part of life for our students.

Esperanza’s athletic program allows our girls to learn how to overcome challenges and obstacles, while confronting cultural stereotypes about young women playing sports.

Participating in athletics also contributes to positive body image and higher self-esteem, and provides a number of valuable lessons for our girls that they carry into their everyday lives. The varsity teams compete against other local independent schools, which broadens our students’ horizons, builds school pride, and allows our players to practice sportsmanship. Additionally, many of the students at the schools we compete against will go on to the same secondary schools as our students and having this common background gives our girls a form of social capital and connection when they leave Esperanza and start high school.

Four different sports are offered in each of the three athletic seasons, and students are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones and try out for the varsity team or sign up for an intramural sport. Students have practice twice a week for two hours. Varsity teams play six games per season. Because we do not have our own athletic facilities, Esperanza relies on a number of valued partners to run our athletic program. Some of these partners share their facilities and coaches, including the YWCA and YMCA in Lawrence, which provide dance and swimming facilities, as well as instructors for both sports.

The City of Lawrence has also been tremendously generous with field access and permits.

Since launching this program, we have seen incredible strides in both our current students and our alumnae.

Our girls have displayed increased levels of confidence, sportsmanship, and leadership, and have also vastly improved their athletic abilities.

According to athletic director and assistant principal Jen Munoz, “Over the past few years, I have seen the growth in pride that our girls have in themselves. Their coaches demand a high level of commitment and effort at practices and games, and the girls continuously rise to this challenge.”

An increasing number of alumnae have gone on to play competitive sports in high school and college, which shows that our students are building the skills, character, and love of the game to be able to continue their athletic careers at postsecondary levels.

Making a DIFFERENCE Interview with Tutoring Program Coordinator Terrill Jennings Q: What led you to your passion for education?

I received my degree in Romance Languages from UMass Amherst and after a few years, I earned certification in early childhood education. During that time my husband was assigned to work for two years in Tokyo and fortunately, it was possible for our three young daughters and me to accompany him. I was able to enroll my youngest daughter in an international preschool where I also taught the three year olds. That was my first encounter with international education, and that’s what drove me to a passion for learning and teaching.

Language is the foundation for everything.

Q: What led you to Esperanza Academy?

Esperanza Academy relies on a committed corps of volunteers who share their diverse talents and time with our students. This group includes Esperanza’s Academic Program Volunteers, who meet weekly to tutor students on reading, math, and other core subjects. These volunteers, many of whom are former educators, not only enrich each student’s education, but they make a tremendous academic and personal impact on the students’ lives. A critical reason for 3

the success of the tutoring program is Terrill (Terry) Jennings, who partners with Esperanza Principal Annmarie Quezada to lead the program, trains and advises other tutors, and shares her immense talents with our students.

Terry is a lifelong educator; she taught for more than 40 years and was a founding teacher at the Landmark School in Beverly, which specializes in educating students with language-based learning disabilities.

I am a parishioner at St. John’s Church in Beverly Farms, and I learned about the school when Laurie Bottiger, Esperanza’s first head of school, came to speak about 10 years ago. When Chris Wilson, Esperanza’s second head came to speak at the church a few years later, I approached him after the service and asked if he was open to volunteers. He said yes, we figured out a plan, and I started volunteering at the summer school.

Q: Tell us about the tutoring program and how it is structured.

We currently have 17 volunteer tutors and 23 girls in the program.

The groups (1:1 or 2:1) meet for an hour once a week. The primary focus of the program is on leveled reading – as a guide, we check the girls’ standardized test reading scores, and I select passages from a readingleveled series that is appropriate for their different reading abilities. These factual readings offer a challenge, but the girls can be successful with them.

Reading comprehension is important, but it’s the vocabulary that we’re focused on. Many students are lacking in the breadth and depth of word meaning, so the tutors focus a lot of their attention on the vocabulary work before reading the passages.

Q: What advice do you give to tutors?

One of the keys parts of successful tutoring is to give the student sufficient processing time to respond when you ask them a question. Don’t answer for them, but give them the space to think about their answers. It is also important to validate responses that are given, even if the answers aren’t accurate. Give credit for what the student is able to provide, and build upon their successes.

Q: What changes have you seen in the girls since you started volunteering at Esperanza?

I’ve seen a willingness for the girls to take risks, more active participation during the sessions, and open and meaningful conversations between the students and the tutors. There’s a

social outreach going on here, which is so important for the girls in addition to the extra academic attention.

Q: What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned during your time at Esperanza?

Being at an all-girls school allows our students to take risks, and the tutoring program provides a space where they can do this. There are no distractions or fears of not having the right answer, and the girls are able to overcome the reluctance to put themselves out there. The tutors are extremely patient and validate what the girls share and engage them in sincere conversations. Sometimes, it’s more important to take a bit of time from the reading tutorial to talk about something meaningful to the student before proceeding to the day’s tutorial. This open exchange builds the bond of trust, which is huge for our girls. Through this program, the girls are learning flexibility, trust, self-advocacy, risk-taking, and relationship-building, all of which are incredibly crucial skills to have.

Full STEAM AHEAD How did you spend your summer? If you were an Esperanza girl, you started with a week at sleepaway camp and then spent four weeks building and programming robots, testing the water in local lakes and ponds for Cyanobacteria, and learning how to design and build bridges!

GRADE 5: BRIDGE BUILDING AND THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

The fifth grade studied bridge building, which started with learning about how engineers approach the design process and culminated with the construction of popsicle stick bridge models. The structural integrity of each team’s model was tested by seeing how much weight they could hold before breaking. Science teacher Alex Supple notes that the fifth graders “learned about thinking ahead, discussing their ideas with partners, and planning before jumping into the project.

The reality didn’t always match the plan, which is a valuable lesson to learn building popsicle stick bridges and not real ones.”

GRADE 6: ROBOTICS AND CODING

GRADE 7: FRESHWATER ECOLOGY

The sixth grade built Lego robots and learned how to program them on their iPads. Each group designed an obstacle course for their robot and then wrote code that would provide the robot with the necessary commands and instructions to complete the course. The girls learned valuable problem solving skills and how to maximize the trial-and-error process. After some initial frustrations, they were thrilled when their robots could go forward, back up, and turn on command. Esperanza’s Director of Technology, Bethany Wieczorek, who led the robotics project said, “I was able to learn alongside the girls through the problem-solving process, and I was so proud of their final projects.”

The seventh grade worked in partnership with the EPA’s Bloom Watch Study to monitor, document, and report harmful cyanobacterial blooms. Cyanobacteria is a hot topic within the field of water quality management, and the EPA was excited to spread this information, especially to kids, to spur communities to become more involved and invested in managing resources. This project tied into ongoing work from the academic year, where the girls learned about water quality, how to test bodies of water, and how to report on this data. The girls took several field trips to local lakes and ponds where they collected, analyzed, and graphed results of water sample testing that focused on cause-and-effect relationships.

SINCE OUR FOUNDING in 2006, the school year at Esperanza has included a mandatory summer program. Until 2016, summer programming was a continuation of the traditional school year, allowing teachers and students to stay engaged during the summer months and to cover more material than the September to June school year allowed. While this program worked well and served its purpose, the faculty and staff thought that the summer could be used more effectively.

After much research and discussion about student needs, this summer Esperanza launched an innovative, project-based STEAM program.

STEAM ties together the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Studies have shown that middle school girls, especially girls of color, do not feel empowered to explore or excel in these academic areas. Additionally, women of color are severely underrepresented in professions relating to STEAM industries, a problem which can be traced directly back to a lack of opportunity and supportive learning in these fields from an early age. The Esperanza STEAM program was designed to foster curiosity, build confidence, and give our students a supportive space to explore new concepts. It was also designed to be FUN!

eats more s’mores than any human could possibly need. For many of our students, this trip is their first time away from their families, and for some it’s the first trip out of greater Lawrence. The isolated setting of the camp allows the girls to commune with each other and with nature, and there is significant time for community building and fellowship.

Back on campus in July, the girls spent their mornings on a humanities curriculum focused on organizational, writing, and study skills, which served as scaffolding for both the STEAM curriculum as well as academic success throughout the school year. Afternoons were devoted to hands-on STEAM projects including engineering, robotics, and fresh water ecology.

Lim-Tex, a North Andover-based environmental research firm. Led by Leland, Esperanza seventh graders participated in the EPA’s Bloom Watch Study. This partnership gave our girls the incredible opportunity to use innovative technology, learn about lake ecology and water quality, and participate in a program alongside other students and professionals.

Leland notes the power that Esperanza has in facilitating this type of experience: “It took a place like Esperanza to be flexible enough to even have this happen. It’s a real testament to Esperanza being as it is – to see something exciting and go with it.”

Based on feedback from students and teachers, the first year of the summer STEAM program was a great success!
