Annual Report 20191

Esperanza Academy is proud to provide an exceptional education to the young women of Lawrence. The four years that our girls spend on campus at Esperanza, from the ages of 10-14, are a time of tremendous physical, emotional, personal, and academic growth. We believe strongly that spending these four years surrounded and supported by female peers allows our students to maximize their growth, take healthy risks, and reach their full potential. As a tuition-free, independent school, Esperanza is 100% privately funded and relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and community organizations.

DEAR FRIENDS, AT ESPERANZA, WE ARE FOREVER GRATEFUL

to our supporters who, through their generous commitment to our school, are invaluable agents of change. We are proud to have three classes of Esperanza Academy alumnae who have graduated from college, and this year marks the first time that we have had alumnae give back to the school by participating in the student sponsorship program. To see our alumnae, who have benefited tremendously from your generous contributions, play a similar role with our current students is truly inspiring. Students in Lawrence dream of being athletes, musicians, scientists, artists, and engineers. At Esperanza, they can explore these dreams. When you support Esperanza and its innovative approach to education, you are making a direct and immediate impact in the world; you are giving these students daily opportunities to reach their potential and close the achievement gap for young women of color. In the following pages, you will read stories about how the support of our donors continues to foster innovation, growth, and freedom and justice through education. Last year our school withstood the challenges and impact of the gas explosions that hit Lawrence, Massachusetts. During the crisis, if you drove by any of the makeshift shelters in Lawrence, you saw hundreds of volunteers in action. I saw folks crossing city and state lines to assist families in need. Our community was at its best. At Esperanza, our students and faculty processed the events through the gift of art. In response to these events, we saw how our Episcopalian values such as love, justice, community, and belonging carried us through. When we closed out the year with a visit by the Most Reverend Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, it was fitting that he shared a message about loving yourself, God, and thy neighbor. His message beautifully illustrated for our students how self-esteem, love for humanity, and humility can be woven together to form an unbreakable fabric. Through our annual report, you will experience our students’ multiple ways of thriving. Being an independent school has allowed us to be creative and unique in addressing the systemic challenges our students and their families face. By offering music therapy, a 12-year commitment to our students and their families, a rigorous and supportive curriculum, and an all-girls environment, Esperanza demonstrates the potential of holistic education. As a tuition-free school, we rely 100% on philanthropy, and we are fortunate to have such loyal supporters who believe wholeheartedly in Esperanza’s mission to close the opportunity gap for our students. In Gratitude,

“Students in Lawrence dream of being athletes, musicians, scientists, artists, and engineers. At Esperanza, they can explore these dreams.”

CAMP LAWRENCE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR JOY, community-building, and personal growth. The students challenge themselves on the ropes course, in canoes, and with bows and arrows. They laugh as they play tetherball, sing around the campfire, and enjoy boat rides. In community with their advisory, they reflect on their goals for the year and their growth. While at the beginning of the trip, many express trepidation about sleeping in the wilderness and outdoor bathrooms, by the end, almost all wish to stay longer!

Graduate Support Program

Our work begins with celebrating the identities and educational journeys of our current students and graduates. We work to provide guidance as they prepare for and consider summer programs, high schools and colleges, workforce placement, and other major academic, career, and life decisions. The main tools we use are mentoring and social-emotional support to build trusting relationships that grow and develop during their four years at Esperanza and beyond.

Viviana Cordero Garcia

Ashley Gonzalez

What is your role at Esperanza and what do you do?

As an alum, how did you come to work at Esperanza?

In many ways, my role as Director of Graduate Support is my best one yet. I am able to use the skills, knowledge, networks, and community empowerment processes that I gained in my previous roles in educational non profits and higher education institutions to provide support and celebrate our girls for their community cultural wealth, as described by scholar Tara J. Yosso. I love being a part of the Esperanza team because I am not doing this work alone—and we know social justice work is collaborative at its core.

How I came to Esperanza starts back in 2006 when I entered the school with only 41 other students for the first ever first day of class. Esperanza has been a major part of my life ever since. When I graduated college three years ago I found my way back here for what was only supposed to be a temporary job while I finished graduate school. Now I am here as part of the graduate support team helping our students go through a similar path.

What inspires your work? Through our Graduate Support Program’s 12-year commitment to all girls, my team and I provide socio-emotional and academic support for all our students and graduates. This is a big responsibility that I do not take lightly. I am motivated to continue this work by the students themselves and their families. My commitment to creating more inclusive spaces and more positive student experiences has been strengthened throughout these two years at Esperanza. It has been strengthened through every conversation, call, text, hug, and through

my experience of living and working in Lawrence, a place that, much like my beautiful Jackson Heights in Queens, NY, is full of immigrants, light, resilience, and hope. And, there is nothing more beautiful than being part of a community that perseveres. If you could have a picnic with anyone, who would that person be? Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez would be my dream picnic partner. We would each grab a bacon, egg, and cheese from a corner bodega, and then talk about local Queens and Bronx politics and community activism, about what it means to be the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress, and end with a “yurrr.”

Describe the work you do. y main focus in graduate M support is helping the current 8th graders apply to high school. As well as helping them prepare for what that experience may look like by providing tips for how to study, how to communicate with teachers, how to get involved, and for some students it is helping them prepare to enter spaces that look very different from what they are accustomed to here in Lawrence. I do this work because I have seen it first hand and can attest to its success. It’s not easy work I have learned, but it is so rewarding and I am glad to be able to help our students and alumni.

EsperanzaAcademy.org

Who would you have a picnic with if you could? I f I could have a picnic with anyone it would be my great grandmother. I would want to tell her what our family has been up to and how she has left quite a legacy.

Douglas Kennedy What is your role at Esperanza and how did you come work here? Like most paths I’ve taken, the trail to Esperanza has been a wandering one. But looking back, it doesn’t seem to meander at all. In my search for meaningful work, I’ve helped entrepreneurs open businesses, developed missions and visions for non-profits, and even brought dinosaur fossils through the backdoors of museums. However, my work at

Esperanza has proven to be the most meaningful so far. I came to Esperanza as a Teaching Fellow, a twoyear teaching and learning partnership between Esperanza, AmeriCorps, and the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Alumnae Spotlight Natalie Lara graduated in 2013 from Esperanza Academy. She is currently at Center College in Danville Kentucky with aspirations to practice law. We caught up with Natalie while studying abroad in Japan for the Fall semester.

What made you want to study abroad in Japan? I decided to study in Japan because I wanted to get myself out of my comfort zone and immerse myself in a culture that is entirely different from my own. My friends that did this program always ended up applying to the JET program after graduating because they wanted to come back. That’s how I knew I wanted to apply. What’s the food like in Japan? The food here is amazing! It is so incredibly healthy and there are always so many options, every time I open up the menu it is overwhelming. Food varies from raw/cooked seafood, steak, noodles, miso soup, sushi, it is so good. Do you have any advice for immersing yourself in a new culture? I would definitely suggest learning a few words/phrases before traveling to a different country because it is not fair to expect that everyone knows how to speak English. Also, I would say to be as open minded as possible! Try new things, because not many people get the opportunity that you do. It is truly a wonderful thing to see how everyday life can be so different depending on what part of the world you live in.

6

What have you learned about yourself in the first few weeks of being in Japan?

In what ways does this study abroad experience inform your future goals?

I have learned that it is okay to be different. I think when I first got here I assumed people would want me to assimilate in their culture, but that is not true. That is the beauty in traveling, learning different customs but also showing people your culture as well. People want to learn from you just as much as you want to learn from them.

I hope to become a lawyer one day so this was probably going to be the only time I was going to be able to study abroad for a while. It is giving me the opportunity to witness how laws and government works in a different place.

Describe your favorite day so far. My favorite day so far would have to be when I visited the elementary school in Yamaguchi. We got to visit 5th graders and it was so wholesome. They were all practicing their English while also teaching me Japanese, they were just so adorable! We played Dodgeball, and our team Dominika (Dominican Republic) won, they were adorable. I was smiling the entire time I was there.

EsperanzaAcademy.org

What does it mean to be an Esperanza graduate studying abroad in Japan? Are there things you learned while at Esperanza that you have carried with you through high school and college and now abroad? As an Esperanza graduate studying abroad seemed like a dream come true! I never would have imagined being in Japan when I was a student there. Esperanza has taught me to take advantage of all the opportunities that come my way. You never know where you can end up, so getting out of our comfort zones and saying ‘yes’ to opportunities that may seem intimidating at first can take us a long way.

ON A MISSION

“... no school like it in our membership” “As I look at the landscape of our member schools, there’s probably no more distinctive, and I would say, no more compelling school, in terms of its mission, than Esperanza. What it is trying to do to address and in some way disrupt the cycle of poverty in our country, what it is doing for girls education, and what it’s doing for those middle years of a child’s education which are so vitally Why Esperanza Matters to The Rev. Daniel Heischman, D.D. important in a child’s development. You bring those three things together in this one institution, there’s no school like it in our membership, in that way. What’s here at Esperanza is inspiring, but also truly distinctive.” The Rev. Daniel Heischman, D.D. Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools

EPISCOPAL IDENTITY The sum of a human’s parts is not simply what they can learn, what they can produce or how they can perform. Esperanza’s continued emphasis and integration of its Episcopal Identity marks a departure from understanding the role of education as simply rote accumulation and dissemination of knowledge, and instead approaches each student as a whole and valuable child of God, as they already are.

8

at Esperanza

Episcopal Schools prioritize education as a way of life, cultivating wonder, curiosity, and delight in the gift of creation and the varied skills that we each possess. We believe that understanding religion, not simply through the lens of doctrine but as a discipline in itself, allows us to dive deep into the larger questions of meaning, history, literature, art and music, and the ethical questions which ground us and our actions every day. Through corporate, communal worship, we set aside the to-do lists regularly, to be reminded that, ultimately, we are part of a community who cares, listens and is committed to one another. At Esperanza, we don’t need to have a school of Episcopalians to be proud of our Episcopal Identity. Through Chapel, we listen to the holy stories of communities trying to understand what it means to be in a relationship with oneself, one another and with God. We are led by each grade and faculty member in this worship—we notice how the stories of scripture shed light on our lives today, and how our students learn to make those connections of meaning through their reflections, prayers, and song. We offer our students EsperanzaAcademy.org

the opportunity for spiritual leadership— this is their service, and they plan, lead, assist at the altar, and support one another week after week. Prayer grounds us throughout each day at Esperanza. Silence and mindfulness are integrated into classroom time. Knowing one another—the faculty, the students, the staff, the families—is part of this holy practice too. In committing to the hard work of learning about the varied aspects of love—joy, forgiveness, atonement, mercy—we are able to serve and support a whole person: in heart, soul, strength, and mind. Through all of this, we aim to enable every single person who walks through the purple doors of Esperanza to engage the holy work of transformation, of themselves, their communities and our world.

“Believe in your dreams” Visit from The Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church Bishop Curry spoke to our students of the power of love, selfaffirmation, and he reminded our girls to believe in their dreams because anything is possible. During the Q&A with the students, one student asked him, why did you decide to come to Esperanza and the Bishop quickly responded... “Because we want to let the world know what is happening here at Esperanza Academy.” 10

Frank & Ruth Butler — Agents of Change

In this year’s annual report we are thrilled to highlight two very dear friends and long term supporters of Esperanza Academy, Frank and Ruth Butler. Frank and Ruth were instrumental in the founding of the school and have been loyal supporters and volunteers since Esperanza’s beginnings in 2006. Recently, we had the privilege of visiting with the Butlers as they celebrated Frank’s 90th birthday and their 65th wedding anniversary. In our conversation with them, we reflected on the early years at Esperanza and what drives them to be such impactful agents of change.

How long have you been involved with Esperanza Academy?

What aspects of your involvement with the school have given you the most joy?

Frank: From the very beginning. When it was a dream in Founder Jeff Gill’s mind. Jeff was the pastor at Christ Church in Andover. He wanted to do something in Lawrence that he could get the parishioners involved in. He was acutely aware of the economic disparities that existed just across the river and it troubled him. We’ve always been involved in education and tried to seek out ways to help children. Ruth worked as an elementary school teacher and knew the importance of education. When Jeff told us about his idea we were on board.

Ruth: Seeing the families and the girls as they came to school. I remember one of the very first gatherings we had with the girls. It was a dinner to get to know the students at the beginning of the year. When we asked the students what they hoped to do in the future some of their answers were to be a waitress or hairdresser and within months their answers had changed to wanting to be a lawyer or a doctor. Their whole persona had changed. The energy was contagious.

How did you get started with educational philanthropy? Ruth: Probably as a result of my needing so much help when I was going to school and having a wonderful, wonderful benefactor help me. I borrowed all the money to go to college. My folks just weren’t able to help. There were 3 of us and they just couldn’t do it. So I had borrowed money from this wonderful man, Mr.Stevens. When it came time to pay back the money instead of letting me pay it back, he insisted I pass it on. I remember crying because I couldn’t believe someone would do that. Frank and I felt we needed to start paying it forward right away and not wait until we could afford to do it. We went over to the president’s office of Gordon College and told them the story and that we wanted to sponsor a student.

EsperanzaAcademy.org

What has been one of the main reasons for your continued support and involvement with Esperanza? Frank: It’s transforming lives, expanding young people’s views of what’s possible and what they can do. It’s working! This interview won’t do it justice. The best way to see the impact is to visit the school and meet the girls. The staff is so enthusiastic about what they do. It’s life-giving.

A DAY IN THE LIFE at Esperanza

“The girls are a part of defining, 'What is an Esperanza girl?' We don’t come up with that idea, it’s a collaborative effort. We can provide them opportunities, but they have to be the ones to do it. Every day they are scientists, they are writers, they are mathematicians.” — Kristina Dolce, English Teacher Closing the Imagination Gap through Literature

What Our Students Are Grateful For

Ways to Give ESPERANZA ACADEMY SEEKS TO END THE GENERATIONAL CYCLE OF POVERTY FOR ITS families through education. We make a 12 year commitment to our girls, 4 years of a transformative independent middle school education at Esperanza, followed by 8 years of graduate support. In order to be tuition-free and independent, we rely 100% on private funding through the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, and community organizations. Donations to our Annual Fund have a direct and immediate impact on all aspects of the school- the academic program, graduate support, music therapy, professional development, and campus life.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER ESPERANZA ACADEMY RELIES on a committed corps of volunteers who share their diverse talents and time with our students. Our Academic Program Volunteers tutor students on reading and other core subjects. These volunteers not only enrich each student’s educational program, but they make a tremendous academic and personal impact on a young life. We welcome those generous individuals who believe in and wish to support Esperanza’s mission and promise you that the students of Esperanza Academy will provide you with a memorable and richly rewarding experience. For more information on these or other volunteer opportunities, please contact: Ariel Aggarwal ariel.aggarwal@esperanzaacademy.org or call (978) 686-4673 ext. 32

“Esperanza is a unique place. It not only empowers young women but it is a place that follows their progress through their years at the school, but also their high school and college years. That’s a pretty unique type of situation. The proof is always in the pudding though, and the success rate of these young women from Esperanza is just phenomenal. I can’t think of a better place to invest in the young women that are going to change this world.” Marty Doggett, Trustee Emeritus, Esperanza Academy, Former Head of School, Governor’s Academy Why Esperanza Matters to Marty Doggett
