In Loving Memory
Dear Friends, As we enter our twelfth year educating underserved young women of Lawrence, we embrace change. One can hear a continuous echo of change in our hallways, in our classrooms, and in the larger community. Guided by our AISNE accreditation, we have improved our curriculum with the support of dedicated, mission-driven teachers. We have woven our core values of wisdom, service, leadership, and integrity into our daily school life and celebrate these values in all that we do. On the theme of exploring our place as global citizens, this year we are thrilled to partner with Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, Tennessee to support a small Haitian school in Boc-Banique, Haiti. We are proud to strengthen our dedication to social justice and global citizenship through this work; please read on for more information on this partnership.
ROSALYN KEMPTON WOOD Last December we were deeply saddened to learn the news of founding trustee Rosalyn Kempton Wood’s passing. A staunch supporter of Esperanza and the young women we serve since the school opened its doors, Rosalyn was a former board president, trustee emerita, student sponsor, and major benefactor. Esperanza Academy would not exist without Rosalyn’s incredible generosity and steadfast support. Rosalyn was a constant presence on Garden Street and at Esperanza events around greater Lawrence. She was a tireless cheerleader and champion for the school

We are immersed in a world where our students need to understand the complexity of global learning. Technology, world language, and collaborative learning are stepping stones that will enable our students to progress. We could not offer these exciting programs without the support of our Board of Trustees, donors, volunteers and families. Like our middle school students, Esperanza is entering a pivotal time of formation; this comes with change in the best way. Please know that your support is what ignites this amazing transformation that we see in each and every one of our students. We remain thankful for your continued support of our mission driven goals and of the young women of Esperanza. Sincerely,
Annmarie Quezada Interim Head of School
Where in the world are
Esperanza Girls?
As part of Esperanza’s mission to prepare our girls to be global citizens, we encourage all of our students to go out into the world and learn this global citizenship firsthand! Studying, interning, and working abroad gives students proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, skills that are vital for their academic and career development. At Esperanza, our Graduate Support Program provides the resources and support needed for our girls to thrive away from home.

GLOBAL CITZENSHIP Embracing Our Role in the World Community
Esperanza’s
Haiti Partnership “Pa bliye nou,” the children and teachers at the school in Boc-Banique, Haiti, said to us as we drove away and waved goodbye. “Don’t forget us.” This was a powerful sentiment to leave on after our whirlwind trip to Haiti, and is a testament to the importance of this new partnership. Thanks to a grant from the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), three Esperanza staff members were able to travel to Haiti and explore a partnership with an Episcopal school in Boc-Banique in the Central Plateau from June 27-June 30. Our trip was led by Roger Bowen, NAES liaison between Episcopal schools in the
U.S. and Haiti. On Tuesday the 27th we flew into Port-au-Prince and then drove about three hours to Hinche in the Central Plateau. Our host, Pere Noe, is the venerable archdeacon of the Central Plateau and the priestin-charge at St. Andre’s Parish in Hinche. He is also responsible for 12 satellite churches and schools (all within a couple of hours of Hinche), including our partner school in Boc-Banique. We stayed that evening in the rectory and the next day departed Hinche and drove about two hours to the school in Boc-Banique. Boc-Banique is a single “room” school of 200 students in grades K-6. They are served by six teachers and a principal. The
school building comprises a make-shift wood frame and corrugated tin panels. The school currently serves students food three times per week, but their goal is to serve a meal five times per week. Teachers are paid $50 USD per month, but the goal is to pay them $100 USD per month. Even though they had finished their school year and class was not in session, almost all of the 200 students showed up to meet us. After speaking to the students and presenting a handprint mural designed by Esperanza girls, we had the chance to speak to the teachers to discuss their priorities; the top priority is a new, permanent school building.
After leaving Boc-Banique, we drove about an hour to see an in-progress school construction project, funded by the Diocese of San Diego, CA. Pere Noe took us there to see what he has in mind for a building in Boc-Banique, which will likely be funded by our other partner in this endeavor, Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville, TN. On Thursday we had time to visit some other notable landmarks, so we left Hinche and drove to the original hospital built by Paul Farmer and Partners in Health in Cange. We then drove into Mirebalais and saw the new hospital that was constructed after the 2010 earthquake. We then returned to Port-au-Prince where we stopped to visit some art galleries and
markets along the way, before returning to the United States. We are so grateful for the incredible opportunity to travel to Haiti, and left fully committed to continuing this work. The partnership is still in the early stages, but objectives include building awareness and cultural understanding among our students (the majority of whom are Dominican) of the complex and contentious history between Haiti and the D.R., strengthening Esperanza’s Episcopal identity by serving as prayer partners with our counterparts in Nashville and Boc-Banique, and exploring ideas of community service and social justice. To keep this partnership alive and growing,
Esperanza staff members will incorporate aspects into our curriculum, for example, reading Haitian literature in English class, learning a song in Creole in music class, studying Haitian history, and expanding our chapel program to include more connection to our Haitian and Nashville partners. Part of Esperanza’s mission is to “inspire our students to be active learners and responsible global citizens…” and this partnership will be an important step toward fulfilling that mission.

Esperanza College Graduates Tell us about your experience at Esperanza Academy.
FC: I had a great experience at Esperanza! What sticks out to me most is how I learned to love learning. It was great to be part of the first class of students, and the support I received from the teachers set me up for success. AG: I moved to Lawrence from the Dominican Republic with my parents and brother in 2000, and was excited to be part of Esperanza’s first class of students. The school has changed a lot since I was a student, but what’s stayed the same is that there are really good people who care about you and want you to succeed. BK: I moved to the U.S. from Africa when I was in the sixth grade, and attending Esperanza was one of the best opportunities I could have had at that time. I started at Esperanza not knowing English and I was really nervous about going to an all-girls’ school, but the teachers supported me so much and taught me everything I needed to know.
Where did you go to high school? How did the Graduate Support Program help you with this process?
FC: In high school I moved from Lawrence to Springfield and attended Cathedral High School for my first two years, then after that school was destroyed by a tornado, I went to Springfield HS of Science and Technology. It was hard to transfer, but even though I moved away from the area, Grad Support always checked up on me and my family. It didn’t matter that I moved away, they were always there. AG: I went to Austin Preparatory School; to get ready I came to Esperanza every day over winter break and worked on my application with the graduate support staff. Coming from the Dominican Republic to Lawrence where it’s all mostly Hispanic and then going to a majority-white high school was a big culture shock for me, but I felt supported by the Esperanza staff. Austin Prep’s workload was challenging, but I came to Esperanza every Thursday for study hall with Mr. Lynch.
BK: I went to Notre Dame Cristo Rey, after lots of discussions with Graduate Support! I was really torn between two schools, but the staff helped me assess what my best fit was based on size, opportunities, and financial aid. I definitely made the right choice in going to Notre Dame. Where did you go to college? How did the Graduate Support Program help you with this process?
FC: Grad Support was a huge help in assessing what my “best-fit” college was. I ended up choosing Westfield State, and really appreciated how the staff checked in with me constantly when I was there. AG: I went to the University of New Hampshire where I studied sociology and international affairs. Both Austin Prep and Esperanza helped me through the college application and financial aid process; the most helpful part was having Mr. Lynch read and review all my essays. BK: The college application process was one of the hardest

things I’ve ever done. I can’t imagine figuring all that out without the Graduate Support Program, who helped me get the scholarships I needed to attend Providence College. Although it was really intimidating to go there and the classes were really hard, it was so nice to have Esperanza checking in and sending me care packages. It meant a lot to me to get letters from Esperanza students, and these connections helped me to persevere. What activities did you do in college?
FC: In college I was a communications major. I also was part of a dance company, vice president of the Latin Association for Empowerment, an academic advisor, a member of the communications club, and a peer mentor. AG: I was really involved in college. In addition to my double major, I also did a ton of extracurricular activities. I worked for the Multicultural Student Affairs office, became a mentor for low-income, first generation, multicultural students,

In the spring of 2017 we reached a huge milestone in Esperanza’s history as we celebrated students from our first class of sixth graders who graduated from college! We caught up with these three college graduates in June to hear about their experiences during and after Esperanza. Please read on to find out what they’re up to now!

and was also the president of “Mosaico,” a Latino/Hispanic student organization. I also had the amazing chance to study abroad in France my junior year, which I loved. The graduate support program encouraged and supported me throughout everything I did in college, and even sent me care packages. BK: In addition to my health management major, I did a lot of volunteering. I was a “Big Sister” in a group called Step Up – I really liked being a mentor to younger students. I was also an RA, and a member of a scholarship board.
i re
BK: I started off not sure where I was heading, but I graduated feeling like a well-rounded person who can have a conversation with anybody about anything. What are you doing now? What are your future goals?
FC: I’m currently an administrative assistant at the Crestview Country Club in Agawam. Eventually I want to get my MBA and start my own event planning company!
FC: The biggest change I notice in myself from college is confidence. I learned to trust myself, put myself out there, and try new things.
AG: I’m so excited to be back at Esperanza, working as the family engagement coordinator! In addition, this fall I am starting graduate courses at UMass Boston at night to get my master’s in applied sociology. I am really grateful for all that Esperanza has done to support me, and love that I am back where I started!
AG: I’ve changed a lot! My experiences in college really helped me grow as a person. I got comfortable with public speaking, learned how to organize, and became a better leader; overall I am a more well-rounded person because of my college experience. College changed me tremendously.
BK: Ultimately I want to go back to school and get a master’s degree somewhere in the health field; I’m thinking about a Physician Assistant or a Nursing program. Right now I’m interning at an electronics company sharpening my skills and figuring out my next steps!
How have you changed since going to college?
