The project is named "Wood's Up" because it is about the upcycle of boat wood, which was sinked in sea water for decades until it is brought "up" to the land for further upcycle process.
Hong Kong fisherman history is studied, Aberdeen is naturally an optimal shelter for fishing boats as it is surrounded by mountains and with opening at both sides to the outer sea. In the early 60s there are lot of fisherman living in the boats which parked tightly within the area. Since the 60s, Hong Kong government built public housing around the area to settle the fisherman population. Also with the development of the industrial activities in Wong Chuk Hang in 70s, a lot of fisherman moved to work in the factories.
Today, according to the census data, Wong Chuk Hang district has higher aged population with lower education attainment compared to other districts, which is directly related to the migration of the fisherman population in the area. Our project aims to develop a facility for not only upcycling the boat wood but also serving as a community and training space for these population.

Left: The map shows the building polygon with the pedestrian network highlighted in the area, it also overlays the actual current satellite image of the sea with the boats parking in the area. The dotted line is the travelling path of the boats within the shelter.
Bottom: The selected site is located at Sum Wan, with 4 existing shipyard relocated.
A visit to Y Park is conducted on 21 Feb 2024. Y Park is a facility to recycle urban tree wood. Equipments used in there are documented and their size and space requirement are referenced in the later design process of this project.
Following is the boat wood recycle and upcycle process which can be divided into 2 parts.
Disassembling the boat and preprocess like wood splitting and shreddering, which will be carried out by worker staff of the facility at the ground floor, the processed wood products will be carried away by truck to other parties.
Part of the wood pieces will be sent to upper floor of the facility where we will have CNC workshop for the public participants.

1/F will be the public access area with the exhibition about fisherman history and boat wood types and upcycle process.
Top: Following are some materials about Wood type and its post-processing steps collected from Y Park.
Bottom: Following are some materials about fisherman history collected from Aberdeen Pier 6.
After the background studies and research, we collected the following key concepts which will be used for the design process of the buildings.
• Keel structure - use the form in roof or building structure design
• Bridge - tranditionally in Aberdeen people walk on bridges over the fishing boats, this concept is used in the design of a sky bridge in the building for visitors
• Linear circulation - Shipyard is linear shaped, thus circulation of visitors and workers will be designed in a linear form
• Wave - wave form is used in the skin design, like a wave coming from the sea onto the shore
• Sail - sail concept is used in building form initially, but found too symbolic
• CNC - CNC made building components, e.g. wood panels on the roof skin
The design composes of 2 buildings, one for the parking and disassemble of the boats and the other behind it houses the following functions
- workshop and equipments for internal worker
- loading area for trucks
- connect sky bridge to Broadview Court podium and Shipyard, sky bridge allows visitors to view the facility from the top without disturbing the worker staffs
- CNC workshop for public visitors
- Cafe
In the first iteration, a sail is used as the form of the buildings, it is found too symbolic shortly afterward
The idea is further evolved to wave form roof skin which connects both buildings. Following are some sketches from the discussion. The semi-open podium space at the 2/F is a product of this evolution. The curved shape is formed by an intention to maximize the space within it. Not to mention, Rhino Panelling Tool is used to generate the skin composed by trianglar panels.
The skin is composed of wood panels, glass panels, and void panels, which controls the ventilation and lighting in different zones of the buildings. E.g. shipyard side is mainly composed of wood panels, while main building side has more glass panels and void panels.
