This is a HKUspace school project inspired by a big chopper signage located at 221, Cheung Sha Wan Road, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, the shop is called Leung Tim Choppers Factory. This shop has 60 years history, they produce extraordinary good quality knives with passion and even export to overseas.
Top Right:
Visits had been made to the site from Sep to Oct 2022, through conversation with the shop owners I awared that the big signage will be taken off soon but they did not know the exact time yet.

Left: Building ordinance about the reqirement of signage dimension and distance from the street.
Bottom Left: The chopper signage of Leung Tim Choppers Factory doesn’t meet the requirements.
Right: An attempt to record the signage form by on site Lidar scanning by the IPHONE, Lidar in IPHONE only support few meter range, not enough for this exercise.
9
A visibility Test has been performed on this signage, I walked away from the shop to distances of 10m ,70m and 150m, and observed how well the signage can be seen at different spots, it is found it can been seen from a far distance. A visulization map is produced below.

Total Signage surface area is compare to Shop floor area. An adjacent shop with a similar floor area is used as a comparison.
LEUNG TIM CHOPPERS FACTORY
Shop Area: 63.06m2
Signage Area: 36.77m2
Signage/Shop Area ratio
58.3%
PLATANE
Shop Area: 63.06m2
Signage Area: 4.11m2
Signage/Shop Area ratio
6.5%
It is observed that the shop can be divided into two parts, left hand side selling Kitchen utilities (less space and very condensed), right hand size selling Knives (with more space for customers)
Left: A color map indicate the area that different signage of the shop can been seen.

Stage 2
Distillation & Conceptualisation

13
In stage 2 we are asked to extract some of the characteristics from the shop we selected and try to create a 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.5m size furniture.
The first idea is influenced by a secondary creation published in the social media about this signage. The form of choppers are used in the furniture, comments from the tutor is that it is not abstract enough.
To further explore, the concept of “Drawing attention” or 搶Fo in Cantonese is extracted as the main concept of the design process.
A drawing with a lot of singages overlap with each other competing space and attention.

A 1:30 study model is created, with a cube, knives cutting in from outside, and it is designed to be hanged on the ceiling, users walking into it can feel the a lot of knives pointing to themselves.

Stage 3 Intervention

17
In this stage we are asked to design a 5m x 5m x 5m shop at the selected site of Tsim Sha Tsui harbour side.
Left: Itration 1 design, a chopper cutting a cube into 2 half
18
Bottom: Iteration 2 design, a cube with a lot of signage as decaration. There is sky light and opening at the bottom, allowing shadow formed by the signage to appear inside the building.
Left: Front elevation of the design
19
As an attempt to try to escape from the cube form, a software called Rhino and Glasshopper is used to generate some randomize form.
Grasshopper script is highly influenced by the tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIVx90UX0XU in which a tool called Random Reduction is used to generate the randomized form compise of retangular cubes.
The modified script of this project has been uploaded to https://github.com/lexeric/school-project-2022
Below: a form like this is gernated by the script above.

Bottom:
As the Leung Tim Choppers Factory has a long history in Hong Kong, this shop designed is mainly for the exhibition of the information about the shop and its knives.
Left:
Visitor can come into the building through opening at one size and exit at the other side.
Bottom: There is some openings at the bottom of facade allowing vistors to see through the building to the scene behind.
Bottom: Actual dimension of the building
24
Top: Concrete will be used for the structure and Anodised aluminum finish will be used for facade
Bottom: Disassemble diagram

Site
analysis is performed
Top: Sky view is taken from the site, to analyze how much sky the site can see and evaluate influence of the adjacent buildings. A smart phone use fish eye lens is used for this.
A sun path and shadow analysis is performed in SketchUp
Below: The shadow at different season and time.

Left and Bottom:
A 1:100 site building model is created to analyze the relationship between the model and the site. (Site model of the harbour side is created in group)
27
As the building has irregular and randomized form, a folding paper approach is used to build the model, following is the folding paper sample for building the 1:30 model.

A chopper form signage is retained paying tribute to Leung Tim Choppers Factory
