Suppose Design Office - House in Kiirenakamyo is selected to be the modern house to analyze.
The vast scenery of Kagoshima Bay below is just beautiful and rich. However, due to the influence of ash fall from Sakurajima in this area, it is rare to live with the windows open on a daily basis, and relationship between architecture and outside is divided.
The architect handle this problem by expending the wall thickness and transforming boundary line to surface then to space.
Top Right:
By making eaves deeper and interior a little darker, the scenery emerges clearly and is treated as being closer to everyday life.
Top:
Large crossbar supports across the ceiling, while hanging pendants provide lighting below

12 sites are provided in North Point and site 4 is selected as the hypothetic site of this project. It is located at Tong Shui Road. Data regarding the site have been collected from the web and during the site visit.
Bottom:
Site visit has been conducted and photos have been taken.
Historical facts of the site, especially the North Point Tram Terminal
1953 - North Point Tram Terminal is built
1966 - Kiu Kwan Mansion is built
1980 - Photo taken in 1980
1985 - A pedestrian footbridge is integrated with the tram terminal
2020 - Fire at the bridge
The bridge is closed and will be demonished in 2 years together with the tram terminal
Existing plans of all buildings in site 4 are collected from BRAVO
Site scanning is done on site using LIDAR (an iPhone app called PolyCam)
Right:
Measurement done after 3D mesh is constructed from scanning
Bottom: 3D mesh of the tram terminal
Sketches are drawn about the site.
Bottom:
1:100 Plan drawing of the site, interior of tram terminal is shown.
Right:
1:100 Sectional drawing of the site, interesting features in the tram terminal is shown.
Observe the geometries of the in-between spaces within the site area. Look out for unusal forms (negative spaces), mis-opportunities, under-used leftover spaces, or neglected, unoccupied urban gaps.
Located a neglected, unoccupied space within the site area, following 6 different massing options for the occupation of this neglected space are designed.
The volume should be around 100m3, with minimum height of 2.1m, and minimum width of 1.2m.
Followiung axonometric drawings and collages are produced base on the 3 options.
One of the option has the staircase facing the direction of the habour, so user can experience the habour view while walking up the staircase, another option uses the existing staircase as the entrace of the dwelling.

Nolli-map is integrated with a Voronoi map to analyze how much space each building in the map can share. It shows the target site at the tram terminal can share relative large amount of space.
Bottom:
Nolli-map integrated with the noise level map caused by the traffic on the road, pink represents higher noise level and yellow represents lower noise level. It shows the selected site has relatively higher level of noise.
Top:
Based on above findings, opening is designed with no windows directly facing the road. while ribbon windows are created for the habour view. and skylight on top of the dwelling.
Bottom are rendering of the interior to see the effect of the openings.
Top:
A more interesting opening strategy is evolved, opening at the interlocking space of the 2 larger cubes. And a corner skylight at the 2/F borrowing the design idea of Carlo Scarpa.
Bottom are rendering of the interior to see the effect of the openings.
Final design, additional openings are added to increase the lighting of interior. Vertical partitioning and fencing is added to the staircase.
Collages of the interior of the final design of dwelling.
