Ferragamo

A FlORENtINE tRIbutE tO AN AmERIcAN VENuS

 Marilyn Monroe,is the star of an exhibit at the amazing Salvatore Ferragamo Museum at the prestigious Palazzo Spini Feroni in Florence. A fitting tribute to the silver screen diva who simply adored Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. Ferragamo wrote in his autobiography that the size of a woman’s foot tells about her character. He divided women into three categories, the Cinderella, the Aristocrat and the Venus. Size six, the shoe that fit Monroe, was in the Venus genre. The designer claimed, “Venus is usually of great beauty, glamour, and sophistication, yet under her glittering exterior she is often essentially a home body loving the simple things of life. Because these two characteristics are mutually contradictory the Venus is often misunderstood. People accuse her of too much luxury-loving and frivolity.” Although he never met Monroe in person, the Florentine shoemaker made the star’s shoes for a number of her most famous films, many of which on display at “Marilyn,” an important exhibition fifty years after her death, now running until January 28, 2013. Thirty pairs of shoes and more than fifty wardrobe combinations worn on screen and off, along with film clips and original writings, reflect and juxtapose the star’s double nature as spiritualized female and pop icon. Beyond her sexuality and stardom was a complex modern woman whose every move was caught on film, still and moving. To honor the Venus aspect of the actress the last room of the exhibition shows the close connection between Monroe and the Renaissance cultu-

re by comparing several Marilyn’s portraits in ‘classic’ poses with famous works of art that represent similar poses and expressions. Stern’s famous picture of Marilyn standing on the beach wearing a cardigan is shown alongside a reproduction of Botticelli’s La Primavera. Side by side, the parallels between the two blonde Venuses rising from the sea is striking. You can also appreciate the resemblance between images of Monroe and the sensuous nudes of Canova and Boucher, and an extraordinary pairing of Tom Kelley’s famous Playboy nude of Monroe and the penitent Magdalene by the 17th-century painter Francesco Furini. Post the exhibition, purchase a fantastic limited edition handmade replica of the famous high-heeled pumps made for Monroe by Ferragamo. And you too can have a touch of iconic excellence in every step. museoferragamo.it

In your face

 The fashion and beauTy indusTry, as we know it today, wouldn’t be the same without Mario Testino’s lens. Born in Lima, Peru, Testino is one of the world’s most influential photographers. His work has been featured in prestigious magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ ; his advertising campaigns have contributed to the success of many leading fashion and beauty houses like Burberry, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. As a portrait photographer, he has captured contemporary actors and worldwide celebrities, as well as receiving royal commissions from Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince William and Stephanie of Monaco. London, Milan, Tokyo, Mexico City and Madrid are just a few of the cities that have hosted exhibitions of his talent. And in October 2012, another North American city joined this list, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston invited Testino to present his work, now on display through February 3, 2013. Titled “In Your Face,” the exhibition offers a stimula-

ting glimpse into some of today’s most elusive and exclusive subjects through the lens of this celebrated photographer. Known for the elegance, sophistication, irreverence, and contradiction of elements in his images, Testino gives us a career retrospective set in compelling visual stories that highlight an interconnection of mass media, celebrity, and glamour, and offer a new view of his influence and contributions to both worlds fashion and photography. The MFA exhibit in Boston represents the brilliant range and quality of Testino’s thirty-year career through more than 125 of his most iconic advertisements, portraits, editorials, and private party snapshots, all of which were personally selected by Testino himself. Among these images you’ll encounter Kate Moss, Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga, Madonna, David Beckham and Mick Jagger, among others. “In Your Face” recreates the photographer’s world and his subjects, actually making the visitor feel as if they have just stepped into one of his larger-than-life photo shoots. mfa.org

J´adore l’Absolu

u DIOR IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL of beauty and elegance for women, and there is no better way to illustrate this than with an emblematic fragrance, J’Adore l’Absolu. A captivating yet sophisticated perfume, with a perfectly floral bouquet. François Demachy, perfumer extraordinaire, blended the soft and sweet Damask rose, the seductive and luminous Arabian Jasmine and the powerful and robust Indian Tuberose together,

creating a true unforgettable olfactory sensation. The fabulous contemporary French artist and designer Jean-Michel Othoniel was commissioned to design the limited edition bottle. Inspired by a fairytale of exquisiteness and the splendor of triumphant femininity, each hand-blown Murano glass bottle is magnifique. The glass thread woven in a spiral fashion around the bottle is embedded with specks of

gold leaf, with a glass-bead top representing a gold universe. The bottle shape is actually not meant to stand upright - it is a treasure to be held in the palm of your hands, suggesting true and lovely intimacy. If you’re looking for that ideal gift, it has found you. Just 300 bottles are available world wide, and only at select Saks, Nieman’s and Bergdorf stores, watch the j’adore movie at dior.com

Chanel Bike

u COCO CHANEL ONCE SAID, , “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” And what’s happening now is an evergrowing concern for our planet, most specifically climate change and our effect on the environment. Every day we see more people around the world making efforts to drive less, sometimes even replacing their cars—with the goal to avoid traffic and reduce pollution—for more environmentally friendly transport, such as a bicycle. So now fashion is reaching the two-wheeled industry. While Chanel is not the first nor the only luxury firm to introduce a bike to the market—brands such as Arman and Gucci have as well—no one has presented a model as couture and elegant as the one created by the Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld maison. Focusing on divine luxury as well as all-important cosmetic details, there is no doubt that this is much more than just a pair of pedals, a chain and two wheels. The ergonomic, aluminum-framed eightspeed bike—the product of Karl´s imagination and a high-quality manufacturer—offers the owner both pedaling precision and elite luxury.

Impressive details define this unique bicycle: the quilted seat, leather handles, even the bike pump are replete with the stylish, signature double-C logo. The bike also features two quilted flap bags and a jewelry roll behind the seat, which are detachable and can be used as individual shoulder bags. The bicycle celebrates the heritage of the brand, which is steeped in Coco Chanel’s passion for sports. Paul Morland quotes Mademoiselle Chanel on the subject in his book, L’Allure de Chanel: “I dominated fashion for a quarter of a century. Why? Because I knew how to express the times. I invented sport suits for me. Not because other women were playing sports, but because I was playing them. In 1914, there weren’t any dresses to play sport in. When women went to watch sport, they looked like the women watching medieval tournaments in those conical hats… By inventing the jersey, I liberated the body, I got rid of the waistline, I created a new silhouette.” We are confident she would be very proud to ride this hand-finished, high-end creation. The home of the beloved “little black dress” and the iconic No. 5 perfume revolutionized fashion—both haute couture and prêt-à-porter—is it now revolutionizing the bicycle world? We’ll see… So far a fabulous Chanel bike is all you need to exercise more, look amazing, and make your life more eco-friendly in the most fashionable way. chanel.com

Brooks Brothers

 new york city, in the spring of 1922, sets the scene for “The Great Gatsby”, the new Baz Luhmann’s film based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic. New York City, in the spring of 1818, sets the stage for Brooks Brothers, an iconic American brand, to open its first store. Fitzgerald himself would soon become enamored with the ready-to-wear line of clothing. He mentioned the brand in many of his writings as “a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction.” Clearly a natural choice for producers Warner Bros and Bazmark, Brooks Brothers partnered as the official men’s clothier for Lurhmann’s highly anticipated movie earlier this year. How fitting that America’s oldest apparel retailer would work with two-time Academy Award-winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin to produce more than 500 evening and day ensembles as costumes for the male principal and background casts. Martin worked closely with the brand’s archivist, designers and merchants to research Brooks Brothers’ history, studying popular artifacts during the 1920s as well as specific merchandise introduced by the brand in the United States during that era. This allowed Martin to achieve a look that encapsulates the Jazz Age while addressing the storytelling needs of “The Great Gatsby”.

The Brooks Brothers files from the 1920s revealed innovative designs mixing textured fabrics and patterns. From formalwear to daywear – tuxedos, tailored suits, suiting separates (sport coats, waist coats and trousers), shirts, ties, shoes and accessories - all reinterpreted by Martin for the characters of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). “Catherine Martin’s costumes bring F. Scott Fitzgerald’s world to life,” said Brooks Brothers Chairman and CEO Claudio Del Vecchio. “She truly has redefined the menswear of the Roaring Twenties with her creativity, attention to detail, and passion for the era. We are proud to be a part of this unique project and to have had the opportunity to work with such a visionary team.” Luhmann’s 3D latest version of “The Great Gatsby” is now set to release in 2013. The film promises to be an illustrative, magnificent and alluring introduction to an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and skyrocketing stocks. Thanks to Brooks Brothers—a legendary international brand that since its founding has maintained a commitment to exceptional service, quality, style and value—the male characters will be stylishly captivating as they wrap you into the 1920’s world of the beautiful, attractive and super rich and their illusions, lies, loves and great deceits. brooksbrothers.com

LE LABO VETIVER 46 FOR BARNEYS NEW YORK, BESPOKE FRAGRANCE

Photos: Courtesy of Le Labo fragrances.

FROM THE EXCLUSIVE AND EVER FAVORITE BARNEYS NEW YORK comes a carefully handcrafted fragrance made by the renowned specialist in the industry. This magnificent bespoke scent will rise to the top of your holiday shopping list. Perhaps the most special aspect of this truly unique fragrance is its manufacturing model, “right on the spot.” The perfume is bottled only at the point of purchase, and the client has the option to choose how to label it. The Le Labo brand adds a new twist to a true classic with Vetiver 46. As illustrated by its name, this fragrance is made with a vetiver base, an essential oil and fragrance made from the roots of the eponymous perennial grass found in a majority of all western perfumes, and over 46 additional elements combined together, resulting in a unique and extraordinary product. The lotion is described as the “Rolls Royce of Vetiver.” Among its ingredients, you will find joss stick oil, labdanum, bergamot, vanilla, black pepper, cedar, and many more. Since its market release, Vetiver 46, with an intense masculine aroma, is considered the manliest creation of Le Labo. The fragrance itself is amaz-

ing; however, defining its smell is certainly an interesting experience. Once applied, different elements make an appearance, some quite obvious and intense, and others in a subtler manner. Vetiver 46 begins with a dry tone, brilliant with a light salty touch, thanks to the joss stick in the formula, the citrus accents, and, of course, the vetiver. Over time, the aroma truly develops, the strength of the highest notes becomes evident, and the fragrance gently lingers while the amber and vanilla reveal a softer side. Every stage of the Vetiver 46 is fascinating, for together they create a highly unusual and truly seductive smell. Each note that forms Vetiver 46 is added in an unconventional way, different from all the other perfumes based on this essence, like Guerlain or Creed, which are mostly associated with a “green” type of smell. The unusual results attained by the Tahitian Vetiver used by Buxton and Le Labo set it apart from the rest. The driving force behind this great, bespoke fragrance is to always be a step ahead, and to set a mark that will linger. We say, mission accomplished. See for yourself. store.lelabofragrances.com

he story of Cartier, like so many others, began at a small un pretentious workshop bought by a simple man with great dreams. It was 1847 when apprentice Louis-François Cartier took over the jewelry store that was owned by previous master Adolphe Picard. With extreme attention to every single detail and an unmesurable love for perfection, Louis- François ran the small business until 1874. At that time his son Alfred Cartier, along with his three grandsons, expanded the family legacy of high-end jeweled creations and unbelievable time keepers. The real magic began back in 1899, when the doors of the first Cartier Paris boutique opened on 13 of Rue de la Paix. It wasn’t long before the name became a desired brand across Europe. In 1909 the London boutique captured the love and attention of the British market. The Fifth Avenue Cartier boutique continues to allure New York clients. Today the intentional renowned company operates more than 200 stores in 125 countries. At the turn of the twentieth century, the era of the pocket watch, Louis-Francois built one of the first wristwatches for his Brazil-

ian aviator friend Alfred Santos Dumont. A legendary iconic design that changed the world of watch wearing. More legendary designs came to life in those years, like the acclaimed “Bow-Knot Brooch”, a magnificent and unique platinum piece with sparkling diamonds that could also be worn as a choker necklace created for royalty and nobility, a crown for Elizabeth II, which features a swirl pattern and a royal laurel; and a century ago Cartier designed the infamous Mystery Clock with hands that appear to be suspended in the air. Many more distinguished clients have called on the talents of Cartier. In 1928 Cartier created the famous a necklace with 2,930 diamonds, including as its centerpiece, the world’s seventh largest diamond, the 428-carat “De Beers” for Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. Another historical sale was the illustrious “Hope” blue diamond to an American client Evalyn Walsh McLean, who truly fell in epic love with the gem when set by Cartier in the current platinum framework surrounded by a row of sixteen diamonds with alternating shapes. Jump ahead several decades to an additional fashion effigy, the “Love Bracelet” created in 1970. This year Cartier once again stops time with the design and mechanic excellence of the new “Tank Anglaise Watch”. Not

a revolutionary look, however evolutionary in the details. Certainly prestigious as well as classic, an object of affection for Tank fans worldwide. And we are absolutely sure there are plenty of them. The history and legacy of Cartier is filled with passion, international intrigue and an endless list of acclaimed royal and rich clients. Aside from those mentioned above are the great Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the always beautiful and incredible Marilyn Monroe and the lovely and sweet iconic Princess Grace of Monaco. Diamonds are forever, watches are wondrous and Cartier’s clique should include you. . cartier.com

The season for show jumpers competing in the United States wraps up with the prestigious indoor circuit. ‘Indoor’ indicates the venue is a sports arena built to house a crowd, vendors and fabulous sport. Although the locations and managements have changed over the years, in hopes of creating the best experience for both the competitor and the spectator, the indoor allure is intact. ruly a long lasting tradition, the acclaimed Washington International Horse Show is the epitome of equestrians in a metropolitan setting. Located at The fantastic Verizon Center in hip downtown DC, the equine athletes are temporarily stabled in the midst of the city's hustle, adding to the buzz of this established equestrian event. Offering classes for the top echelon, including the World Cup Qualifying $100,000 President’s Cup Grand Prix, presented by DC Events, the exciting Puissance high-jump, as well as the country’s best equitation, pony, junior and professional hunter riders, the show attracts hundreds of riders. Over the years several political leaders, many celebrities, CEOs and thousands of equine enthusiasts from all over the world have been delighted and entertained by them magnificent and splendor of equestrian sport. International players including Brazil’s Paulo Santana and Taloubet finished second and Australia’s Matt Williams and Watch Me VD Mangelaar third. Kessler has been competing at WIHS since she was a child. “I think I was champion here in the small ponies when I was little, I did the equitation final, then junior jumpers and now all the way to the President’s Cup. It is one of my favorite shows. I love being in the middle of the city.” Santana was very pleased to have the fantastic opportunity to compete at WIHS. “For me it is one of the best, if not the best show in the United States,” he declared. “The best restaurants, hotels, the crowd, the footing; it makes everybody feel good.” He also

In modern day Manhattan, the Chat Noir is a dining destination, as one of the city’s top French bistros. Located on the Upper East Side between Madison and Fifth Avenues, the

Chat Noir Bistro offers a taste of Montremartre with the charm and warmth of French country inn. Cream striped walls, impressionist painting, gilded mirrors and hand-made sconces all presented in soft lighting create a romantic Parisian scene in the middle of Manhattan. Suzanne Latapie, who considers service a top priority, owns Chat Noir. Welcoming guests as they walk in, Latapie visits every table making certain the evening is idyllic and each dish ideal. The ultimate in one of a kind customer service is one of the many reasons the Chat Noir has a long list of repeat customers. Bien sur they return for the wonderful cuisine, made only with the freshest and best high quality ingredients. Beloved by many amazing celebrities local and not, for example acclaimed director Steven Spielberg, the beautiful actress Michelle Pfeiffer and long-time Manhattan resident Woody Allen; this little and charming bistro is considered an all time favorite for New Yorkers looking for a little taste of the amazing Chat Noir. 22 East 66th Street Nueva York, NY 10065 212-794-2428

rider combinations, German course designer Olaf Petersen Jr. developed a technical track which made for some excellent show jumping and only nine fault free rounds. Stanford student Saer Coulter set the stage early on with Julie Des Brumes, blazing around the difficult elements in a time none of the other entrants were able to beat. It wasn’t until Coulter herself on her second mount, Graciella 50, came in towards the end of the class and cruised around just over a quarter of second faster that the leaderboard changed. A one-two win for the young star who also competed successfully on the east coast indoor circuit this season.

Many rounds later in a similar scene to Coulter’s the previous night, Cook come close to making it a one-two win with his second mount, Bamba, but fell short by less than one thousandth of a second to settle for first and third, with Stewart earning the second place spot.

LAS VEGAS NATIONAL

Saturday: $10,000 Royal Champion Winning Round Classic & $50,000 Fisker Automotive World Cup Grand Prix The first class of the evening offered an interesting format – the top ten scoring teams (with or without faults) qualify for a second round with a clean slate. So it is any of the top ten’s game upon return. Brazilian Eduardo Menezes qualified two for the second round. He won on Quintol Mercedes Benz and captured fourth on Audi’s Reflection. Over a deceivingly challenging course, thirty-five attempted and only five went clean in the evening’s highlight event, the $50,000

Fisker Automotive World Cup Grand Prix. Youth persevered as three of the five clean were Coulter on Graciella 50, Cook on ASB Conquistador and Jonkheer Z and Lucy Davis riding Nemo 119. Add top British rider Helen McNaught on her experienced mount Caballo and you have quite a jump off. Going for the win caused several rails and refusals. Last to go and already in the lead with ABS Conquistador, Cook knew all he had to do was jump clean on Jonkheer Z to clinch the win as well as second place. Lady luck was on his side, as he did exactly that finishing the week with the top two spots in the grand prix. With Vegas as the backdrop, it is interesting to note that the winners of all the above classes also placed in the top four on a second mount. What are the odds?

“It’s not fresh…It’s alIve.” Naoe’s motto entices the palate, and award-winning Chef—and owner—Kevin Cory will do everything in his power to ensure just that. Located at the Courvoisier Centre II on Miami’s exclusive Brickell Key, the restaurant is surrounded by Miami’s Biscayne Bay. Bringing in only the highest quality seafood from around the world, Cory also makes daily trips to local fishing boats to guarantee the freshness of his Japanese cuisine. At the age of 19, Cory

began learning the intricacies of Japanese cuisine, and after studying on his own for several years, he traveled to Toyama, Japan, and joined his uncle Yasushi Naoe—Executive Chef of Kawai Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn—for his final lessons. Returning to America, Cory took control of the sushi at Siam River at a tiny sushi bar in a Thai Restaurant. Several years later, inspired by his uncle and the shoyu (soy sauce) and sake breweries owned by Kevin’s grandfather in Japan, he opened his first restaurant and called it Naoe after his family name. Today, the exquisitely prepared Bento box, uber fresh sushi, innovative flavor combinations and gorgeous presentation combined with the exceptional service have earned Naoe the honor of one of the top three Japanese restaurants in North America, according to Forbes. Zagat deemed it one of the top thirty restaurants in the country. A final note – the setting is intimate and seats few, so plan ahead for one of the two seatings. 661 Brickell Key Drive Miami, FL 33131 305-947-6263

eginning in April and ending in November, select equestrians and their mounts ventured across Europe and the Far East with their eyes not only on the prize of each individual event, but the cumulative points at the end of the season. Exotic and elegant venues greeted the competitors, including Doha (QAT), Valencia (ESP), Hamburg and Weisbaden (DEU), Cannes and Chantilly (FRA), Monte-Carlo (MCO), Estorial (PRT), Valkenswaard (NLD), Lausanne (CHE), Vienna (AUT) and Abu Dhabi (UAE). Truly the world’s premier show jumping circuit, these were the locations of the 2012 Global Champions Tour (GCT). Finishing its seventh year the GCT is known for producing superior competitions at the finest locations, while offering the highest ranked riders in the world a chance to earn top prize money. The GCT Gucci Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi, on November 24th, 2012, marked the end to the biggest and most successful GCT season to date. On a fashion note, Gucci launched a lovely pop-up store with the new equestrian collection and a selection of handbags and accessories. Honorary President of GCT Monaco, Charlotte Casiraghi has

Taking the best six scores from twelve events, Edwina TopsAlexander and her extraordinary horse Cevo Itot du Chateau topped the leaderboard for the second year in a row. The thirty-eight year old accomplished Australian and GCT Champion won a total of Ð294,500 ($381,760) this season which brings her total GCT earnings since 2006 to Ð2.24 million ($2.9 million). Edwina (AUS) and Rolf-Goran Bengtsson (SWE) and his fantastic star stallion Casall La Silla were tied going into the 12th and final leg. Coincidentally both riders had four faults at the same fence near the end of the course. Although still tied, Edwina was named the champion as she won the first grand prix on the tour in Doha, whereas Rolf had several top placings, but no wins. With an unmatched international flair and a who’s who in the world of show jumping competing at each event, the GCT epitomizes the superior in all aspects. Riders, spectators, sponsors alike praise the efforts made by GCT president Jan Tops and his team. At Equ we appreciate all that is luxurious, top of the line, desirable and simply fabulous and The Global Champions Tour is certainly all that.

ARGYLE SPIRITHOUSE PINOT NOIR Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon Dundee Hills, Willamette valley, Oregon Lamb and Pinot Noir are time-honored partners; Pinot also pairs delightfully with beef. Argyle offers a very seductive Pinot Noir wrapped in an aromatic robe of clove and allspice notes with juicy red raspberry and kirsch. It exudes class with an inviting structure of satiny tannins and a delicate balance of morello cherry-driven fruit, lifted by clean acidity and supported by the perfect amount of oak structure.

LEONETTI CELLAR MERLOT

CALERA VIOGNIER

Walla Walla Valley, Washington

Mt. Harlan, Central Coast, California

Merlot goes beautifully with grilled and charred foods, as does cabernet; smoking will highlight the oak components. The Leonetti Merlot is dense, dark, and lush but with amazing focus and levity. Each bottle is loaded with dark blue and black fruits, and its gorgeous high tone aromatics are reminiscent of brambleberry reduction compote. Long and plush on the palate, but with a fine-grained tannin structure and brilliant acidity, this may be the finest Merlot in Leonetti’s history. A truly complex wine.

Viognier is amazing with cheese courses, because of its ideal texture and acidity. Try it as an alternative cocktail wine matching well against salty sweet appetizers, cured-meat and smoky food. Aromas of stone fruit and jasmine spring from this gorgeous Mt. Harlan wine. Silky and smooth, it boasts beautiful, bright, layered flavors of Asian pear and gooseberry with a gentle tartness and creamy accented finish.

Langer Equestrian Group

Langer equestrian group jumped into 2012 with a yearlong celebration of its 40th Anniversary. LEG is one of the largest and oldest horse show management companies in the United States, captained by Larry Langer, the President and CEO. “There were some major zigs and zags through the years, and I never dreamed I would be here for this length of time,” comments Larry Langer, who started LEG in 1972, known then as the Pacific Horse Center. “The sport has been very good to me.” Competitors benefitted from the 40th Anniversary as LEG offered extra prize money incentives, each totaling $40,000. Throughout the year hunter riders competed for a total of $40,000 in hunter derbies, and jumper riders also had $40,000 on the line in the 1.35 Anniversary Jumper Classics. Michael Leon and First & Goal were consistent performers throughout the year in the hunter derbies, and they were awarded the series bonus award.

Ashlee Bond and Southern Girl sped to the win in the $7500 1.35 Anniversary Classic at the LA National and the top bonus award as well. When LEG added a grand prix to its line up for the year, $50,000 Anniversary Grand Prix (National Preview) seemed to be the suitable name, and Marilyn Little was thrilled to lead the victory gallop. LEG also added two new events, the $12,000 Children’s/Adult Amateur and $12,000 Junior/Amateur Jumper Championships, both sponsored by Equitex and LEGISequine.com. The two new championships are modeled after the North American Junior & Young Rider Championships, with both team and individual medals. “I have long wanted to have some kind of team competition,” says Larry, “and since it is our 40th Anniversary, I thought this would be the perfect time for these new events. I have seen how much the NAJYRC kids benefit, and now we can provide a similar experience for Children’s, Adult Amateur, Modified, and Low Junior and Amateur Owner riders.”With medals designed especially for these championships, riders felt the rising thrill of team and individual victory. LEG’s 40th Anniversary year may be over, but the good times will continue. “We are always looking for innovative ways to make our shows bigger and better,” Larry says. “It’s not good enough anymore to just have a good show. There’s too much competition. You have to make your shows special and offer good value. That’s what we strive to do.” The momentum created by its 40th Anniversary will surely carry LEG forward to its 50th Anniversary!

5 Ultimate Destinations for New Year’s Eve

2013

Start 2013 in style at one (or more) of these amazing destinations. Who knows what may follow the stroke of midnight in these hot spots.... BY JIMENA FIGUEROA. BE AMONG THE FIRST TO WELCOME 2013, by celebrating Australian style in the fantastic and very chic city of Sydney. Sydney’s New Years Eve (NYE) on the Harbor, with an impressive seven tons and 11,000 shells worth of fireworks, is widely known as the most watched celebration in the world and the source of many stunning New Years Eve images. Definitely worth a trip down under to catch this display first hand. One intriguing aspect of this annual event that peaks the curiosity of locals and visitors alike is that each New Years Eve on Sydney Harbor has a new innovative theme, not revealed until the revelry begins. Past themes, “Creation,” “ Final Year of the Millennium,” “Year of the Outback” and others have left onlookers looking for more. Until the fireworks begin no one is quite certain how the theme will unfold, certainly a marvelous way to embrace the New Year. At nine, he began work on building a small boat with plans to use it to visit a pretty girl whom he admired. Several years later, a friend of his father hired Fraser to work as part of the working crew on the “Anna R. Heidritter” boat on an extensive trip lasting more than three months. Despite being the youngest member of the crew, he showed the most dedication and greatest effort when completing his tasks. Casa Dragones

HANDCRAFTED IN SMALL BATCHES IN THE REGION of Tequila, Mexico, Casa Dragones is a relatively new tequila made 100% of blue agave. Boasting an exceptionally smooth flavor, it is best sipped and slowly savored. The distinctive taste has allured celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, as well as top chefs and experienced sommeliers. Only a limited amount of this superb tequila is released annually, as the meticulous attention to every single detail can only be achieved by hand. The innovative manufacturing process includes only the finest blue agave plants, carefully selected by the brand’s “Maestro Tequilero”. Then multiple-distilled with pure spring water in an advanced column process that eliminates any natural impurities, the next step, a high tech filtration system exclusive to Casa Dragones, results in a dazzling platinum color. The “Maestro Tequilero” finishes the process by hand, adding an extra hint of aged tequila, stored in American oak barrels for

five years, the final touch to creating am exquisitely smooth and unique taste with no harsh aftertaste. Each limited edition bottle is handcrafted and engraved, including a batch number that corresponds to the tasting notes of that year. With meticulous attention to detail, the 100% Blue Agave Joven Tequila is one of the five official classifications of tequila. The name Casa Dragones is inspired by the legendary Dragones from San Miguel de Allende, who led one of the movements that sparked the Mexican Independence. The award winning and talented executive chef Tom Colicchio declared the smooth taste of Casa Dragones is the reason why he loves tequila. He is a profound enthusiast of the artisanal procedure of its creation, from the harvest of the agave plant to the manufacture of its bottle. Thanks to its exquisite and unparalleled taste, Neiman Marcus chose to include Casa Dragones on its 2012 exclusive gifts lists. casadragones.com

Simon Nizri SIMON SAYS LIFE IS GOOD

So hooked on horses was he, that when his friends and family would invite him to go on vacation, he would choose to stay home and ride. While he was getting his law degree in Mexico City, five years of intense studying, Nizri rode, worked at his dad’s company and trained a private client. And he finished third in a class of 250 students. By Jackie McFarland. Double H Farm’s Rebozo LS, ridden by Rodrigo Pessoa and Global Champions RolfGöran Bengtsson and Casal La Silla. Nizri is the ambassador and contact for La Silla horses in the United States. Natasha Traurig, a young rider from a solid background, assists Nizri with the young horses. “Through La Silla we can provide the American market with top quality show jumpers. We currently have five young horses coming along. After spending some invaluable time in Europe with Bengtsson this year, I was second in the Del Mar Fall Festival Grand Prix with the eight-year-old mare Chela LS,” explained Nizri.

CALIFORNIA CALLING

WILD ABOUT WILDFLOWER

Nizri came to California as a seventeen year old to train with the legendary Judy Martin. “I made her crazy, poor Judy.” But the avid rider loved his coach, “I stayed for three months. We finished the season placing 12th in the Queen Elizabeth’s Cup at Spruce Meadows. She was wonderful.” Many years later, California trainer Penny Wahler was in Mexico at Nizri’s barn. At the time, Nizri was set on moving to Wellington, Florida to further his career. Wahler convinced him to visit Wildflower Ranch, a private facility in Del Mar, CA. Nizri not only loved it, he bought it. That was on his birthday, December 7th, two years ago.

The fabulous facility Nizri purchased sits on ten acres of manicured land with 60 stalls, three arenas, grass pastures, amenities such as a treadmill and eurociser, and is connected with a wonderful trail system that winds its way through Rancho Santa Fe and Encinitas.

SEE LA SILLA Not only the most important breeding facility in Mexico, Alfonso Romo’s La Silla is gaining notoriety worldwide. Producing a select group of young horses per year, several are now internationally known such as Columbian Daniel Bluman’s Sancha La Silla,

When asked about the most influential coach past, present and future, Nizri did not hesitate. “George Morris. He is one of the most educated, passionate yet strict people I’ve ever met. I honestly look at my life as 1978-2004 BG, “Before George” and 2004-Present AG, “After George”. And Jeff Cook, who worked with George for years, is also an exceptional teacher and listener. Both are true assets to the sport and the United States.” Aside from arranging for Morris to teach a clinic at his facility, Nizri is busy planning the 2013 season. Along with the La Silla horses, Nizri owns a nice coming ten year old, Wilco. He finds the climate and grand prix circuit in California ideal for bringing along these show jumpers. Wellington and Spruce Meadows are also in the schedule, as the horses are ready. “Wellington is a fantastic place to compete because it demands the best – that you ride at the top of your game. I was once 4th in an international class there amongst the world’s best riders. It is the competition I treasure the most – even more than the Pan American Games.” That said, Nizri has earned several top places starting in his teenage years through placing in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. As the avid equestrian explained, the path carved from his weanling years was the right one. “My life is horses. When I’m not riding I’m working at the farm. And I love it.”

The state-of-the-art Alltech Indoor Arena fittingly hosts the Alltech National Horse Show. 2012 Alltech Grand Prix winner McLain Ward stated, “To Alltech and Dr. Pearse Lyons I want to say thank you. We can sense your passion. The riders appreciate it, the owners appreciate it, and I want to thank you for that. This is such an incredible facility. There is a very high level of competition for the international jumpers, it has a great infrastructure, and I think this team has done a great job.” After four challenging rounds of competition, 18-year-old Jacob Pope’s horsemanship outshined the rest, for the win in the ASPCA Medal-Maclay National Finals. The 2011 USHJA Emerging Athlete Award winner, who literally rose through the ranks, beat over 150 finalists.
