e love all the seasons, but there is something about summer that is simply sensational. Sun and fun seem to harmonize this time of year. Relax on a Caribbean beach sipping on a refreshing margarita or stroll the streets of gay Paris stopping at a cute café for cup of espresso. We strive to find the best trends, to keep up the elite equestrian world, help find fabulous vacation spots and deliver this and more to you. Our Summer Vacations special offers three fabulous choices, certainly there’s one that suits your style. And speaking of style, take a peek at the Gucci luggage and other must-have items we feature from cool sunglasses to hot pants, iPad covers to Impalas. You’ll also find ‘Where To Stay’ in Los Angeles, London, Mexico City and Paris. While in Paris savor some Lauduree chocolate. Or if you’re feeling extreme, check out 5 Best. We traveled to the old continent for the inauguration party of the new and impressive MSC Preziosa, the latest jewel in the Mediterranean. During our time there we experienced not only the magnificence of the ship and all its trimmings but interviewed Maestro Ennio Morricone himself and dined at Soho. In this issue we take you south of the border into Mexico City for the first edition of the Audi Polo Cup by American Express, and overseas to catch a glimpse of the Alltech Windsor Grand Prix plus a taste of the equestrian life in southern California at the Blenheim Spring Series. Travel from Polo in Wellington to the Kentucky Derby in Louisville to the Pin Oak in Houston through our Picture Perfect pages. Toast the season with a classic wine from our sommelier’s selection. We also included a section on decanters to die for, gorgeous pieces that allow your vino to breathe. Enjoy some down time on the beach or at a café as you flip through the pages of our Summer Issue. As always we thank you.

Hollywood Shades ICONS OF STYLE

PERSOL 2720 S, DANIEL CRAIG / JAMES BOND, CASINO ROYALE

RAY BAN WAYFARER, TOM CRUISE / JOEL GOODSEN, RISKY BUSINESS To think that only two years prior to the movie release the brand was just about to pull these sunglasses off the market due to low sales. The now instantly recognizable trapezoidal frames gave just the right in-yourface look of audacity to suit Tom Cruise portraying Joel Goodsen in the film “Risky Business.” Casual and cool brought the brand back. Quickly adopted by a wide array of Hollywood artists, they appeared in over sixty movies and television shows adorning the faces of popular artists. With all styles projecting the air of rebellious bravado for which they are famous, the shades are most often seen in black. However, if black is not your color, the Wayfarer can now be purchased in eleven frame and nine lens colors. Truth is you can never go wrong when you don a pair of Wayfarers. ray-ban.com

Photos: Courtesy of Persol, Ray Ban, Mykita and Bernhard and Tom Ford.

If the edgy and elegant James Bond fits your self-image, the Persol 2720 S worn by Daniel Craig’s Agent 007 in the film “Casino Royale” are your sunglasses of choice. Initially developed by Italian designer Giuseppe Ratti in 1917 for pilots and sports drivers, all Persol sunglasses are made with his patented Meflecto system that introduced the world’s first flexible stem. Metal cylinders intersected with a flexible core of harmonic steel insert directly into the glasses’ high-quality acetate stem, allowing them to adapt to the unique shape of any face. Available in a variety of frame and lens colors, and with the signature silver arrow on the temples, Persols are still made by hand with the highest quality materials, providing not only eye protection and maximum comfort, but a wearable work of art. persol.com

MYKITA & BERNHARD WILLHELM FRANZ, SARAH JESSICA PARKER / CARRIE BRADSHAW, SEX AND THE CITY 2

TOM FORD JENNIFER SUNGLASSES, JENNIFER ANISTON / NICOLE HURLEY, THE BOUNTY HUNTER

Berlin is home to eyewear company Mykita, known for their creative use of modern materials. The frames feature their patented hingeless design and have this uncanny tendency to turn heads - as illustrated by fashionista Carrie Bradshaw in the film “Sex and the City 2.” Sarah Jessica Parker herself chose this special gold edition of the popular Franz sunglasses, created through Mykita’s collaboration with German designer Bernhard Willhelm. Named after the 1976 Olympic downhill skiing champion, Austrian Franz Klammer, these lightweight shades feature aviator frames and fuse the brand’s trademark featherlight sheet metal frame with dashing mirrored lenses that offer UV400 protection. Slip on a sexy pair. You won’t regret the quality and certainly not the style.

When a product bears your name, you can bet that you’re an inspiration for the designer. That’s the case for Jennifer Aniston, who inspired the Jennifer oval framed sunglasses by Tom Ford. Known for his sexy, modern fashion design, Mr. Ford is credited with the turnaround of the Gucci fashion house before starting his own brand. Likable with a great look, Aniston splashed into stardom back in 1994 as Rachel on ‘Friends’ and has remained in the spotlight for two decades. The Jennifer sunglasses feature a delicate and feminine design with open lens detailing at the temple. Lightweight and comfortable, they showcase the unmistakable Tom Ford aesthetic in their clean and innovative lines. If you prefer uncluttered, elegant lines without logo-overload, these Tom Ford sunglasses are for you.

Gucci Viaggio

SINCE 1921 WHEN GUCCIO GUCCI founded a small shop in Florence, Gucci has built a catalog, in fact a stylish world, of genuinely iconic trademarks and this line of luggage is no exception. As we’ve noted with numerous other haute couture brands, the founder, in this case Mr. Gucci, never dreamed that his small family-run luggage company would one day grow into an internationally sought-after brand and household name. Evidence that Gucci’s unmistakable style is still going strong is in this 4-wheel carry-on suitcase and companion briefcase. Gender neutral, you can share as a couple or each buy a set. Available in five variations from black to red and classy options in between. Featuring black GG imprimé with leather trim, nylon lining and retractable handles and locks, Gucci’s fine Florentine workmanship combines elegance with practicality – there’s an interior compartment with a double zip closure, one open pocket and a detachable identification tag and key holder. The details are impeccable. Personalize your piece with the detachable Gucci ID tag, keep the key on the Gucci key holder. Slip your laptop into the front pocket of the matching black briefcase featuring conveniently located compartments for your smart phone, pens and business cards. Now that you’ve got the right luggage, all you need is your passport, a destination – we recommend beginning your adventure in Florence as a tribute to its Italian maker - a firstclass ticket and you’ll arrive in style. Ready for business or pleasure. Or preferably both. gucci.com

MONTBLANC COLLECTION

MONTBLANC’S SPECIAL EDITION Princesse Grace de Monaco pen is truly a glamorous instrument. Celebrating the 20th century American beauty, who became her Royal Highness after her marriage to Prince Rainier, this elegant writing gadget has deep purple lines, reminiscent of the neckline of her iconic black velvet dress. With a lavish pink topaz clip, and an 18-karat champagne-tone gold nib, the cap and barrel rings are intricately engraved with a rhombus pattern, inspired by the Principality of Monaco’s coat of arms. The limited-edition collection also includes stunning jewelry and timepieces all embellished with filigree petal cut stones, honoring the Grace de Monaco pink rose, a flower named after the Princesse in 1956 for her wedding day. Sophisticated and alluring the collection is a result of a charity partnership between Montblanc and the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, which assists emerging talents in the performing arts. montblanc.com

Twin broThers AnThony And huberT TsAi, founders of TwinLuxe, understand that a truly good shave requires the best tools and a touch of skill. Their goal when starting the company in 2010 was to make products they would want to use themselves. Catering to the discerning customer who is willing to spend a bit extra on a high-end shaving kit and accompanying skin care products; TwinLuxe offers the finishing touches for an exquisite look. Purchase products for the entire shaving and skin-care process, including a pre-shave wash and scrub; a shave cream; a post-shave rescue gel and soothing face balm; an energy mist; a daily detox face wash and mask; and an anti-aging SPF moisturizer. Beautifully designed, their shaving instruments - a blade handle, brush, and stand - are presented in a sleek, minimalist style with a

pleasing feel and a generous heft. The shave brush, made by hand from unbleached silver-tip badger fur, lifts the beard for the closest shave possible. Luxuriously rich, their shave cream is formulated for a dry application. Sparing no expense, the brothers incorporated all the rich botanicals, including rice protein, white tea leaf extract, willow bark extract, and shea butter to ensure a nick-free, precision shave. It can be applied with the brush or by hand. Paraben free and not tested on animals, all the TwinLuxe skin-care products are gentle on the skin. The core products address all skin types, even the most sensitive, while their add-on booster treatments deliver quick results for problematic skin. TwinLuxe Fine Shaving Instruments shave sets, and Shaving Skincare bottle packaging are designed by world-renowned designer Marek Djordjevic, whose works include the exterior designs of the Rolls-Royce Phantom family of cars. Distinctive aesthetics and impeccable attention to quality and detail are evident. With their collection of eight shave and skin-care products, and their sleekly designed shaving instruments, TwinLuxe is fulfilling their stated mission: to bring the barbershop facial spa experience into the 21st century. So before donning that dashing suit – be it tailored or swim trunks – take advantage of a line of products made with you in mind. More than a bag...

THINK OF IT LIKE YOUR ‘MOOD’ BAG, WHICH COLOR IS YOUR MOOD TODAY? To help you make that decision, the prestigious French House of Longchamp introduces its new offering for spring 2013, a smooth supple leather tote bag in tremendously rich and dazzling colors. Illustrating the brand’s affection for the equestrian world, the LM Cuir shopper handbag is embossed with the brand’s timeless logo: a galloping horse and intertwined belts. Choose from cool, classy neutrals for your conservative days to brilliant, bright accent shades like orange, indigo, red, and sunshine your ‘Hello I’m here’ days. These soft stylish bags are made from the highest quality leather by artisans steeped in leathermaking expertise. All are trimmed with gold or silver metallic piping, and include a matching zippered pouch for quick retrieval of important things like a buzzing cell phone or car keys. The Longchamp brand began with Jean Cassegrain in 1948, and the company remains in the Cassegrain family to this day. Originally producing artisanal smoking pipes in a building next to the famous Parisian racetrack for which the company is named, in 1964, M. Cassegrain decided that the market for smoking

accessories was on the decline, and the House of Longchamp began a change in direction. The fine leather goods came to the U.S. when his son Philippe Cassegrain journeyed to the 1964 New York World’s Fair, and with a simple kit of shelves, put together a booth to showcase Longchamp’s new line. If eight tantalizing colors are not enough, another eight are available through the LM Cuir on Demand service that allows customers to choose from exclusive shades having their tote bag made by special order. Bubblegum Pink or Zesty Lime your preference? Cool blue lagoon or bold Ultramarine? Vibrant Vermilion or on-trend Khaki? And what about perennially chic Honey and Terracotta? ‘C’est vrai, vous n’avez que l’embarras du choix’ – French for ‘It’s true, the only problem is choosing!’ Big enough to hold everything you need plus your purchases of the day, the LM Cuir shopper makes an elegant statement of style and quality. So . . . which color are you feeling is perfect for you today? longchamp.com

Nespresso LIMITED EDITION, THE TASTE OF ITALY

Any caffeine connoisseur knows that a fine coffee should possess the right balance of crema, aroma, taste, body and intensity. Crema, formed by mixing air and liquid to produce the foam on the top of the cup, develops and protects the rich aroma of the coffee. Taste is the ratio of bitterness, acidity, and sweetness, each detected by a different part of the tongue, and the body is determined by how dense it ‘feels’ in the mouth. Full bodied coffees such as the Napoli feel more syrupy, and lighter bodied roasts feel more fluid and silkier when running across the tongue. The experts behind Nespresso’s Limited Edition coffees take their jobs quite seriously and approach coffee tasting in the same way that sommeliers approach wine tasting. This dedication to their art resulted in the Nespresso Coffee Codex, a handbook designed to help gourmet chefs and sommeliers expand their coffee knowledge. To taste the true essence of their labor, though, act soon as these Limited Edition coffees, Trieste and Napoli, won’t be around for long. nespresso.com/trieste-napoli

Photos: courtesy of Nespresso.

INSPIRED BY ITALIAN COFFEE CULTURE, Nespresso’s Limited Edition Grand Cru takes your taste buds on a delicious journey to the beloved Italian cities of Trieste and Naples. Imagine yourself sitting in a sidewalk cafe watching impeccably dressed Italians stroll by as you sip a cup of “nero”. In Trieste there’s a specific and unique coffee lingo: for example “nero” is a classic espresso, “capo” has a dash of frothy milk, and “capo in b” is coffee served in a glass rather than a porcelain cup. Paying homage to this beautiful city, Nespresso has crafted a delicate blend of South American and Eastern African Arabica beans, characterized by a rounded texture with notes of chocolate and fresh hazelnuts, and finished with refreshingly fruity notes. With an intensity level of 9, it is best enjoyed in true Italian style as a Ristretto (25 ml), a more concentrated espresso style coffee. However for the coffee and milk lover, Trieste reveals another aspect of its character when served as a Cappuccino. No matter how it’s prepared, Nespresso’s Trieste captures the essence of this European city’s coffeecentric culture. It was in Naples that the “caffettiera napoletana”, the first domestic appliance to prepare coffee, was invented, and it transformed coffee from an aristocratic drink enjoyed only in cafes, to a domestic pleasure available at home. Neapolitans take their coffee short and dark, and it’s an experience best described as a jolt to the senses. With an intensity of 11, Nespresso’s Limited Edition Naples fits the bill with its syrupy body and an aroma of dried black tea leaves. The Limited Edition Naples is an entirely different taste experience. In Naples “caffe” is the word used to order what others call “espresso.” This custom blend brings together Arabica beans from South America, Asia, and Africa in a bold coffee with a smoky flavor.

Les Marquis de Ladurée

TRÈS BON

SIMPLY MAGNIFIQUE. Mouthwatering must-have delicacies rich in history as well as taste, we present an ‘incroyable’ house of chocolates. Ladurée, a quaint French patisserie and macaroon maker, has launched Les Marquis de Ladurée dedicated to the delights of chocolate. Fabulously presented in an exquisite pastel palette of bright orange and blue, the brand sells chocolates and chocolate rich macaroons, cakes and pastries online, as well as at their locations all over the world. The acclaimed French brand makes an entire colorful array of epicurean desserts but they’re best known for their invention of the double-decker macaron and can sell an astounding 15,000 of them a day. In 1862 by Louis-Ernest Ladurée, a prolific writer and social activist as well as a miller, established the Parisian bakery Ladurée. A half of a century later his grandson, Pierre Desfontaines, created the delicious concept of the double-decker macaron, which would become Lauduree’s claim to fame. The innovative Parisian also opened a tearoom at the pastry shop where ladies, who were not admitted to cafés reserved for men only, enjoyed meeting in the freedom of the tearoom rather than their homes.

Their famous macaron is built from two delicate shells that bookend a creamy ganache filling and have a light crunch on the outside and just the right amount of moist chewiness on the inside. They come in a dizzying assortment of flavors and colors, including salted caramel, pistachio, basil, rose, cherriesamaretto, apricot-ginger, rose, violet, orange blossom and coffee. Laudurée is also known for other delectables including niniches -thin cylindrical pieces of sugar candy with natural flavors. Sweet-lovers will also delight in a pastry known as Le Plaisir sucré - a hazelnut “dacquoise” biscuit, flaky praline, with thin slices of milk chocolate, ganache and milk chocolate whipped cream. Their stores, as well as their packaging, are beautifully designed and their boxes of jewel-colored macarons or exquisite chocolates make an elegant gift for a host or hostess. But most importantly, those with an incurable sweet tooth don’t have to go to France to indulge. Laudurée now has locations in Monaco, Japan, Italy, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, America, Brazil, Sweden, Australia and Hong Kong, to name a few. lesmarquisdeladuree.com

WALK TOWARDS SUCCESS IN HAND-MADE SHOES.

SOME MEN GO THROUGH THEIR ENTIRE LIVES with only a few pairs of shoes. They are either unaware or apathetic to the fact that nothing they wear will look quite right. Other men, the stylish men, know the value of a well stocked shoe collection. To some, a pair of Ackerman’s is just another set of expensive footwear. However, the stylish man will walk a little taller knowing that they are very special indeed. Every pair of Ackerman’s are made by hand in Leon, a Mexican city positioned in the middle of the country within the colonial state of Guanajuato inhabited by master artists. These cobblers have inherited the special talents that have been handed down for generations. The hundred year old process remains unchanged. The brand is now available in the US Market thanks to the efforts and vision of Jose Luis Rocha, CEO of San Diego based Ackerman Shoes; He personally over sees the process from design to final product traveling back and forth between Leon and San Diego frequently. These extraordinary shoes made from extraordinary animals are created using only calf skins. Smooth and shinny with a soft and durable finish, calf leather is the most versatile of leathers thanks to its strength and flexibility. A pair of calfskin shoes can last as long as 50 years.

A Sweet Spring For Equestrians

ith a warm welcome to the spring season, this year’s three week Blenheim Spring Classic series along with Showpark's Ranch & Coast offered a combined total of $190,000 in Grand Prix prize money, as well as $20,000 between two USHJA International Hunter Derbies. The competition was intense and the victories sweet.

BLENHEIM SPRING SERIES WEEK I The $40,000 Blenheim Spring Classic I Grand Prix, presented by the Orange County Register, welcomed twenty-two horse and rider participants onto the International Field at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park. The Peters were in stride on this pre-Easter Saturday - Peter Cottontail handled Easter brunch for exhibitors, Canadian Peter Holmes set an inviting course and New Zealander Peter Breakwell took home the top prize. With fifteen of twenty-two riders completing the course with a score of four faults or less, course designer Peter Holmes did an excellent job setting for the field. "I thought it was a very challeng-

ing course. I noticed almost every rider was clear or had four faults. So everybody thought they could jump it clear. Two horses spooked to the combination and I think that might've been the shadows. But that's horses, it happens. The standard was very high and they just had to be very precise for a no fault score," commented Holmes. Seven riders piloted their mounts to that fault-free score to secure a spot in the jump-off. And of that group only two were double clean, Breakwell and second place finishers Michelle Spadone aboard Tembla (Morgan Hill Partners, owners). As the seventeenth pair to go, Breakwell and Lucas joined Canadian Jennifer Serek on Eleonora (Shin Shin Group, owner), American Karianne Boyce-Lockhart on her own Hopscotch and Austrian Peter Petcshenig on his own Saint Quentin. Each of the three had a rail in the jump-off, ultimately finishing fourth, fifth and sixth

sented by Summit General Insurance Agency. Some of our nation's top riders made a bid to no avail, including veteran Hap Hansen, Olympian Will Simpson and young phenom Lucy Davis. It wasn't until the twenty-fifth galloped in, Canadian Ben Asselin riding Rush, did spectators see all the rails remain in their cups. Opening the door to the possibility of a clean round, directly after Asselin, Australian Lane Clarke was clean on Semira de Saulieu (Charlotte Gadbois, owner), then Colombian John Perez mastered the course on his first ride Utopia, a feat he repeated later in the class on his second mount, Ranville (Tani Zeidler, owner). Former World Champion Eric Navet aboard Signe Ostby's Quanto Fino 2 made it a four man battle for the win. Towards the end of the first round, two young female talents joined the jump-off group, American Paris Sellon on her own Heracross and Brazilian Josephina NorLantzman aboard Chello Z (Josephina Nor Stables, owner). Just time faults kept Rusty Stewart, Leslie Steele and Paris Sellon on her second mount from returning for round two. Ten horse and rider combinations finished with a four fault score in round one, resulting in just under half the class completing the challenge with one jump down or better. After a trying course and a competitive field, the day belonged to Clarke. "I really believe a lot in Semira. She's fantastic. I've only done one other grand prix on this horse about a year and a half ago and she was amazing. She won that, too."

BLENHEIM SPRING SERIES WEEK III Blenheim EquiSports presented two stellar high performance events, the $50,000 Blenheim Spring III Grand Prix, presented by Equine Insurance, and this season's first $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Exciting twists and turns captivated competitors and spectators alike. With grand prix prize money increased by over 20% for week three of the Blenheim Spring Series, internationally renowned course designer Leopoldo Palacios intentionally built a tough track for Saturday’s class. "From the three weeks this is the week with the most money. I needed it to be a touch harder than the other weeks. The field of riders is good, so I built a more difficult course." Thirty-nine pairs attempted to master the tight time allowed, distance and scope challenges presented by Palacios. Two top-notch young women, Saer Coulter and Lucy Davis, mixed with two male veterans, Einrique Gonzales and John Pearce, competing in a jump-off with long galloping lines meant speed and agility would prevail. Pearce and Chianto claimed victory with the fastest jump-off time of 38.62 seconds. On Friday, Joe Lombardo's $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby course offered long flowing lines with several options giving the four esteemed judges a chance to carefully study the twentyseven derby rides and twelve handy rounds. As we often see in the Handy Round, spooks, stops and mishaps changed the final result. The victory gallop was ridden by Haness aboard Conor Perrin's Gelato, who was superb in the handy after finishing fifth in round one. The pair barely beat Jenny Karizissis rid-

ing Harriet Posner's Victory Road. Hap Hansen and Shelly Lachow's Anomaly leapt up to third place after earning solid handy scores.

Showpark ranch & coaSt On two gorgeous southern California afternoons, two fabulous rides earned the lead in the high performance victory gallops for the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, sponsored by Equ Lifestyle and presented by Ferrari & Maserati of San Diego, and the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, both on the grass Grand Prix Field. Grand prix course designer Oscar Soberon of Mexico made a wise prediction. "I think since it's $60,000, it should be tough enough, not too tough, but appropriate for the amount of prize money given today. Because we have really good horses and riders I think we will get to see a good class. I'm expecting somewhere around four to eight clear rounds." Thirty-seven couples attempted but only four men, representing four different countries, managed to master the questions asked: fifth to go, Saint Quentin and Austrian Peter Petschenig; the tenth entry, Calavda with Brazilian Eduardo Menezes; then fourteenth to gallop in, Quilebo du Tillard and Mexico's Enrique Gonzales; and finally the eighteenth couple in the ring, Signe Ostby's Jonkheer Z with American Karl Cook aboard. Despite the competitor’s three rival attempts to take the lead, faults prevailed. The only double clean, Eduardo Menezes and Calavda, led to the win and a sweet victory ride in a Ferrari. Course designer Joe Lombardo presented an inviting hunter derby

track on Showpark's large grass field. The Handy Round, with options for tight turns and a challenging trot jump after the hill, once again changed the top twelve positions. The victory gallop went to birthday girl Hope Glynn on C.R. Haribo, while Blenheim Spring Derby winner and leaders going into round two, Nick Haness and Gelato, bumped down to ninth with a disappointing rail in the second round. Glynn commented on the course and her winning horse. "C.R. Haribo is a smaller horse at 15.3 hands but has a great jump in him so he just needed to be able to show off a little. I thought that second round derby course allowed us to do that. It was a really tough course with that trot jump down the hill so I tried to revert back to my equitation days [she laughs] to ride that."

Signorina Eau de Toilette enhances your personal scent each day - a versatile individual who can conquer the world with wit, intelligence, beauty and personality but also a romantic and sweet young woman in search of her dreams. All that captured in a single essence of unique and lasting character. Signorina is designed to be a “fresh, sophisticated and subtly cheeky olfactory celebration of chic girls” and certainly a head turner for their suitors. Perfumers Sophie Labbé and Juliette Karagueuzoglou gave this fragrance top notes of pepper (rose/pink) and blackcurrant buds (cassis); middle notes of jasmine, peony and rose; and base notes of patchouli, musk, pannacotta. An easy, lighthearted scent, the package’s traditional Vara bow - a classic signature of Ferragamo - is done with a modern mix of pink

and violet, surrounded with a hint of pink gold that adds sweetness to this new edition. Salvatore Ferragamo’s signature seals this wonderful wrapping. The beautiful bottle makes a graceful addition to the top of any young woman’s bureau. Celebrated Italian designer, Salvatore Ferragamo, was best known for his shoes. By the time he passed away in 1960, he had filed 350 patents and created some 20,000 designs. Resolved to carry on her husband’s legacy, Salvatore’s widow, Wanda Ferragamo, took charge and their six children—Fiamma, Giovanna, Fulvia, Ferruccio, Leonardo, and Massimo—went to work to expand the family empire, branching out into clothing, handbags, silk scarves and ties, and fragrances. Thanks to her efforts, one fabulous floral fragrance, Signorina Eau de Toilette, is available in 30, 50 and 100 ml sized bottles, as well as in matching body products. ferragamo.com

Genoa awaits for you to discover all the magic of the Mediterranean.

he MSC Preziosa invites you to come aboard for an unforgettable odyssey while traveling in luxury and splendor. Your journey will begin in Genoa on the Italian Riviera. History comes alive in this charming port city with its steep streets, pastel terracotta-roofed houses, and warm, welcoming people. With your ship scheduled to sail at five o’clock, get an early start and make the most of your day in Genoa. Plan to visit the beautiful Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, a crowning achievement of the famous nineteenth century Catalonian architect Antoni Gaudi. Explore the luxurious boutiques and cozy alleyways along Via Garibaldi, and tour the home of Christopher Columbus. The Aquarium of Genoa, one of Europe’s largest, is wonderful. As you make your way to the Stazione Marittima to board the ship, you will want to stop at the Restaurant Soho & Champagne Bar (also known as the Soho Restaurant & Fish Work) to enjoy the freshest fish in the port, and their house specialty, handmade pasta. After your day in Genoa, the gracious, attentive staff and crew of MSC Preziosa will welcome you aboard. Once you have transformed your cabin into your home on the sea - hopefully with an ocean view and a private terrace - it will be time to attend the reception, where an elegant piano and the exquisite Swarovski staircase await. After choosing a light fare post your fresh fish experience at port, consider dancing the night away in the Safari Lounge The first port of call will be Naples, and you will have seven hours to immerse yourself in this charismatic city. Start with a cup of coffee, the traditional drink of Naples, the place where the home coffeemaker was born. Neapolitans take their coffee seriously, they like it short and dark, in the form of what they call a ‘ristretto,’ best described as a jolt to the senses. Now that you are awake, go explore!

Walking is your best choice, as public transportation is tricky, so follow the ‘street art’ posters to interesting places. Just remember that in Naples, red lights are looked upon as ‘decorations’ and pedestrians need to be wary, particularly of motor scooters. Via Toledo, Naples principal shopping street, is also the best place to find a great meal. Throw the calorie-counter away and sample some Neapolitan delicacies: a true margarita pizza made with fresh basil and tomatoes, olive oil, and garlic; and a rum baba, a decadently rich yeast cake sometimes filled with cream, and saturated with rum and molasses. Upon your return to the harbor at seven, MSC Preziosa will be ready to set sail, as your journey continues. Relax after your day of sightseeing with a drink and some great music in the Green Sax Jazz Bar before calling it a night. As you wake up for another adventurous day, be certain to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean from your balcony. This might be a good day to try Maya and Inca Restaurant for a delightful breakfast. When MSC Preziosa puts into the sickle-shaped port of Messina, the magical sounds of Maestro Ennio Morricone and the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra from the ship’s christening come to mind. Known as the door to Sicily, this city is a melting pot of cultures, once an important stop on the trade routes. Visit the Cathedral of Messina and check out the world’s largest astronomical clock. Set in a 197-foot bell tower, when the clock strikes noon, the carillon begins to play the Ave Maria, and the mechanical bronze figures come to life: lions roar, birds flap their wings, maidens ring the bells, and Jesus rises from the tomb. A true visual and auditory feast. Don’t miss the Messina Giants, two fifteen foot statues of a man and a woman both mounted on horseback, that represent the mythical founders of Messina. Be certain to savor the local Sicilian cooking delights, delicious dishes with the essence of sun and sea. After reboarding at the end of another awesome day, consider a visit to the Platinum Theatre, a Broadway-size venue that boasts an impressive playlist.

Travel EXPRESSIONS The next stop is exotic Tunis with its bustling medina quarter, magnificent mosques, and the neighboring site of ancient Carthage, from where mighty Hannibal and his elephants set sail. Go ahead and take a camel ride, not particularly comfortable but great for a laugh and some pictures. The medina, found at the center of the city, is a dense aggregate of narrow alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and colors, and a wide range of local crafts to take home. A must-do is the Bardo Museum, with its outstanding collection of important Roman mosaics and other beautiful antiquities. After returning to the Preziosa from your long and busy day, an exquisite dinner at The Golden Lobster is a good way to re-energize for an after-dinner walk on the deck. Here you’ll soak in an incomparable gift of nature: a view of the stars from the middle of the Mediterranean. The ship will be underway for all of the next day, giving you an opportunity to enjoy the exciting amenities on board. You might want to indulge your inner child on the exclusive Vertigo waterslide, which rises 120 meters above the sea; or maybe you’d like to indulge your inner peace with some elegant pampering in one of the MSC Aurea Spas. Whichever indulgence you choose, the casual but delectable Eataly Restaurant would be a good choice for lunch or dinner.

Le Corbusier’s most important works. Book a short boat trip to the island fortress of Chateau d’If, made famous as the setting of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. And the Provence jewels of Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, and Cassis are all in close proximity. Explore the remarkable Palais Longchamp, built in the 1830s with lovely apartments for rent, interspersed with lavish private mansions. It now houses a Fine Arts Museum, a Museum of Natural History, and an amazing observatory. Take the time to stroll the grounds and explore its treasures. But the sun itself remains one of the major attractions of this lovely city. No matter where you explore, remember to bask in the light that inspired famous painters like Cezanne, Braque, Dufy . . . The splendid adventure aboard the MSC Preziosa is about to end, and Genoa is waiting with open arms to welcome you back to port. Before you go ashore, enjoy an elegant dinner at L’Arabesque. An ideal goodbye outing, the experienced staff will make you feel like royalty. This increidble voyage on the MSC Preziosa traveled across centuries of coastal wonders to cities and cultures dotting the ‘sea in the middle of the world.’ Now that you have a tiny taste of the travel treasures that await, discover the Mediterranean origins of this luxury cruise line for yourself. The Mediterranean cruises are updated with new and exciting travel itineraries each year. Picture yourself and your favorite cabin mate aboard the newest jewel in the MSC family crown: MSC Preziosa. msccruceros.com.mx

You have crossed the Mediterranean and will land in the vibrant city of Barcelona, with its acclaimed beaches and astonishing architecture, notably that of Antoni Gaudi. Bring your camera, as most moments in Barcelona will be worth capturing. Visit Gaudi’s creations: La Pedrera, Casa Batilo, and of course, the magnificent Sagrada Family Cathedral. Up for some uphill exercise? Climb to the turrets of the Cathedral for a breathtaking view of the city. A stroll down Las Ramblas gives you a taste of the flavors of Barcelona. Back on board, you try your hand at bowling in the Sports & Bowling Diner. ‘Happy Days’ are here again, so relax with a gourmet cheeseburger and think poodle skirts. The final port of call before Preziosa returns to her home, is the picturesque Marseille. Like walking into a living postcard, Marseille is one of Europe’s most beautiful destinations with spectacular vistas and celebrities at every turn. As France’s oldest city, Marseille has a wealth of monuments, places of interest, and museums to visit. Architecture buffs won’t want to miss the Unite d’Habitation, the modernist residential housing that is one of

WINE ROUTES BURGUNDY: CASTLES, COUNTRYSIDE, AND WINE Imagine relaxing on a summer evening while enjoying a glass of fine red wine. Not just any red vino, but one discovered on your travels on the Burgundy Wine Road to the world’s finest vineyards. By Francisco Masse.

I The most difficult task on this journey will be to decide which wine to savor.

n the third century, an East Germanic tribe called the Burgundians, emigrated from the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea (now part of Denmark), and started a mass migration to Central Europe. Coming first to Pomerania (now Poland), then to Gaul on the Rhine River, they finally, in the early Middle Ages, settled peacefully in the Rhone Valley and named their home the Kingdom of the Burgundians. Today one of the most prestigious wine regions worldwide, their name survives in the appellation, Burgundy. Join us as we explore this region: its vineyards, towns, heritage and history, nature and landscapes, and of course, its cuisine and wines. Wine experts say that in order to know about wines one must know French wine and to know about French wines one must try the Bordeaux wines. Bordeaux Wine districts such as Médoc, Graves, St. Emilion and Pomerol, and wine producers like Château LafiteRothschild and Château Haut-Brion are classified year after year, among the best wines worldwide. But there is another region that, while less famous, could be said to produce “the other great French wine,” and that region is Burgundy. Unlike the Bordeaux wines, which are easily found on the shelves of almost any wine shop around the world, the Burgundies

are rather scarce. This is partly because the large vineyards of the Bordeaux region produce four times as much wine as Burgundy, whose vineyards are fragmented into small parcels. The Burgundy region lies in the east of France, southeast of Paris, and is made up of the old provinces of Côte d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne, and Nièvre. It has an oceanic climate with a continental influence, hot summers and cold winters, with calcareous soil. The capital is Dijon, known in the culinary world for its mustard. Regarding wine production, there are five major districts in Burgundy, each of which produces its own distinctive wine: Côte d’Or, where the most expensive and prized Burgundies are found, and Chablis, Côte Châlonnaise, the Mâcon, and Beaujolais.

This “golden coast” lies at the heart of Burgundy’s wine region. A thin strip of land about 60 kilometers long, it is located beneath the city of Dijon, and is the birthplace of the world famous red Burgundy wines, made exclusively from the Pinot Noir grape. Its north side - the one nearest Dijon, Côte de Nuits, is named after the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and is divided into the following districts: Marsannay, where rosé wines prevail; Fixin, which produces strong, rustic reds; Gevrey-Chambertin, which produces eight full Grand Cru red wines such as Chambertin Clos

Travel EXPRESSIONS de Bèze; Morey Saint-Denis, which produces bold, full-bodied wines and Grand Gru like Clos de la Roche and Clos Saint-Denis; ChambolleMusigny, with soft and elegant reds; Vougeot, with medium-bodied wines like Clos de Vougeot; Vosné-Romanée, with its velvety wines such as Romanée-Conti and La Tache; FlageyÉchezeaux, with its namesake Grand Cru, and Nuits-Saint-Georges, which produces robust and earthy wines. The southern part of Côte d’Or is Côte de Beaune, named for the wine capital of Burgundy, Beaune. This region contains some of the great names of white Burgundy, such as Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet. The white wines of Côte de Beaune are straw-yellow, robust, smooth, and very dry. The reds are produced a little farther south, in the villages of Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Saint-Romain, and Saint-Aubin. These have a tendency to a slightly lighter body than other red Burgundies.

This hotel has attracted the attention of famous international figures. It features fifteen rooms, each with a distinct personality. For example, the legendary guitarist Eric Clapton, a frequent guest, likes to stay in Le Roy—the most beautiful guest room in the hotel, with a magnificent four-poster bed, which once used to be reserved for the kings of France; film-maker Milos Forman prefers the Jadeite room, overlooking the Morvan National Park; and famous French writer Michel Houellebecq, antiques lover, stays in the comfortable Le Prince room. During your stay, you may want to do some trout fishing if the season is right, or you might prefer a swim in the stunning indoor pool, which is built in the old castle vaults. As expected, the restaurant lives up to the standards of this five-star hotel. Traditional Burgundian cuisine acquires an interesting twist in dishes like breaded scallops, morel risotto, and pork dipped in honey. Vegetables are grown in the hotel’s own vegetable gardens, and fish and meat are obtained from nearby properties, ensuring their freshness and quality. And it goes without saying that the wine list is extraordinary. Very close to the hotel are some notable historic attractions such as the Abbey of Vezelay; the Musee de l’Avallonnais in Avallon’s historic downtown; the clock tower Tour de l’Horloge, dating from the fifteenth century; and Parc des Chaumes. lugny.fr Top Right: The Le Roy suite, fit for a king, is the finest room in the chateau, with magnificent views of the countryside and a tremendous bathroom.

Center Left: The beautiful label and extraordinary color of this Verre de Pinot Noir reflect the quality of the region.

Bottom Right: Chateau Andre Ziltener, dating from 1709, houses a hotel and winery.

Where to stay? One of Burgundy’s most luxurious hotels is Château de Vault de Lugny, a luxurious thirteenth and sixteenth century castle located in the beautiful town of Vault-de-Lugny which lies on the River Cousin, between Vezelay and Chablis. Converted in 1986 to a luxury hotel, its style is classic and elegant, very European, allowing you to drift back to the days of nobility and aristocracy.

Where Do you finD inspiration for your Designs? Do you accept special requests from players like cristiano ronalDo or aDD your oWn flair? The best way to answer your question is that athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo and other elite players like him, definitely serve as an inspiration for the final product. However, it’s also important for me to keep all athletes, as well as the general consumer out there, in mind. So I also try to spend time with 16 year olds who are wild about this sport. We are focusing a lot of energy on the biomechanics of the foot - details such as how it moves, how it comes to a stop, and how it interacts with the ball. These things have a significant influence on design decisions. And it’s also important to follow pop culture trends. That’s where I find my cues for colors and styles. In the end, the recipe for success is the mix of all these ingredients.

you’re an inspiration to young Designers. WoulD you share a bit about your backgrounD anD hoW you enDeD up at nike?

Collin Eder Creator and Designer for Nike. Photo: courtesy of Nike.

Collin Eder describes his inspiration and passion for foot mechanics, modern trends, creating cool shoes and the sport of soccer.

Do you like soccer? Of course! I couldn’t possibly dedicate my life to this if I didn’t have a passion for the game. As a kid I loved to watch soccer, even though back then it wasn’t a popular sport in the U.S.

I grew up in the U.S. and moved around a lot. I have lived in New York, Oregon, Colorado, and Arizona. I went to college in Colorado, and also studied abroad for a while. It was while living in the Netherlands that I really came to understand the passion for football (soccer). Back in the states, soccer just couldn’t compete with basketball, baseball, and American football. I had to live in Europe to really get it. Once I was hooked on the thrill of this sport, I realized that I wanted to work for a company that understood the game and helped athletes achieve their goals. I saw Nike as an industry leader. I wore their products, and I knew I wanted to work for them so, right after college my goal was to get a job there. Now, Nike has been home to me for over 10 years.

Which is your favorite innovative Design? I think it would have to be Nike Skin. This was the first time we ever designed a shoe like this, so we decided to produce only a small batch of them to start. We have some top players as spokesmen out there talking about their experience wearing the shoes. Our inspiration for the design comes from how the foot operates. We started thinking about players in places like Copacabana Beach in Brazil where young kids play barefoot in the sand and have amazing control over the ball. Then we began to wonder why they chose to play this way. The answer, we realized, is that barefoot, they are able to get better control because there is nothing between the foot and the ball. The tough part about playing barefoot though, is that you have no traction, so it’s easy to slip. Our solution to this was Nike Skin. With this shoe, there are only 3 layers between the foot and the ball, allowing the player to have the feeling of being barefoot, while still being able to maintain control.

is there a particular player out there you like to Design for? We are currently spending a lot of time with Neymar, the Brazilian player. The most exciting thing about working with him is that he reflects what Nike is all about: he’s not afraid of taking chances or trying something new and different. It is so much fun watching him play.

Which is your all time favorite team? My favorite team? Well, I actually have two. One team I always enjoyed watching whenever I could was Liverpool. I am still a huge fan - well, as much a fan as an American guy can be of a British team. And the other team I just love watching is Barcelona. I truly believe that the way that team plays has completely changed the sport. They have pretty much reinvented the game, and you can’t say that about many teams.

Dialing In To The Equestrian World

Haness aboard the fabulous mare Zeppelien (Kendall Perrin, owner), set a blazing time that couldn’t be beat. The Blenheim Spring Classic III qualifier winners, Kandi Stewart on C-Scooter, came in a close second to Haness. However, by earning 38 points for the victory, Haness takes the lead in the standings. With five qualifiers remaining and add back increasing the prize money for the September finals, there’s still a chance to be one of the top fifteen to compete for the final purse now worth $30,550 and growing. Haness summed it when he said, “This class opens the door for horses and riders to step up. It certainly made my first big jumper win feel special.”

Loans aside, CashCaLL is supporting developing riders and horses with a brand new futures program launched in association with Bleheim EquiSports. New in 2013, the CashCall Mortgage Futurity Series offers eight qualifying classes throughout the Blenheim EquiSports season. Each qualifier is a $7,500 class with a final in September. Add back from each of the classes will increase the final purse, plus there will be no entry fee for the 15 top finishers invited to participate. Competitors have already jumped for a chance to rank in the top fifteen with three of the eight qualifiers in the record books. Entries continue to rise while the purse for the finals grows larger. Saturday, March 30th: CashCall Mortgage Futurity Series Kicks Off with a Canadian Win The inaugural qualifying class at Blenheim Spring Classic had twenty-five entries, nine jumped clean and four of those went double clean. The fastest by less than half a second was Canadian Ben Asselin riding Attaché Stables’ Macavoy and the appropriately named Miss CashCall with Joie Gatlin in the irons earned the red ribbon. Sunday, April 7th: And the Victory Goes to… Blenheim Spring Classic III hosted the CashCall Mortgage Futurity Series second qualifier had fifteen entries with eight jumping clean and once again four double clean. Kandi Stewart led the field on her C-Scooter. Second to Stewart was Chris Pratt aboard Indigo Farm’s Everleigh. Sunday, May 12th: Nick Haness Takes the Lead The third qualifier at Showpark’s Ranch & Coast Classic hosted thirty-seven horse and rider combinations - the largest group of entries to date. With almost half the class going clean, sixth to go in the jump-off,

Her Majesty the Queen attended and His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh is Show President. On Sunday, May 12th an exceptional field of starters, including three Olympic gold medalists, set out to claim the title at this year’s Alltech Grand Prix at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. After a thrilling jump-off with plenty of nail-biting moments, the victory went to Ireland’s Shane Breen aboard Balloon. It came down to the second to last jump-off effort when Breen nimbly took the lead from Great Britain’s Olympic Gold Medal anchor rider Peter Charles by just over half a second. The course, designed by Britain’s own Bob Ellis, generated 17 clears from the field of 39 starters. An internationally recognized course designer Ellis designed the tracks for the intensely competitive and fabulously thrilling 2012 Olympic Games. The first real attack at taking the title came from Charles riding Murka’s Odie de Fervent. As he galloped the length of the arena, in front of the stunning backdrop of Windsor Castle, the crowd gasped and roared with delight when he cleared the final fence to take an early jump-off lead. Ten riders followed but as the final fence repeatedly fell, in their attempt to better his time, it looked as though he may have wrapped up the win. That was until Breen stepped into the arena aboard Breen Equestrian’s bay stallion Balloon. The Hickstead-based, Irish team rider opted for a different tactic than the rest; gaining more time on the first half of the course rather than the second. It paid off and he moved into the lead by 0.53 seconds. Last up to tackle the course was American rider Lauren Hough. Despite a determined effort she stopped the clock at just .85 seconds beyond the leading time, settling for a solid third place with Tackeray.

“I think Bob had been quiet lenient with the height of the fences on the first half of the course,” said Breen, who also won the 2010 Alltech Grand Prix at Royal Windsor Horse Show with Carmena Z. “But it was a tough jump off; as big as any four or five-star international grand prix.” Breen continued, “With the field of riders what else could you expect? It wasn’t just top riders either; it was top riders with their top horses. It was a really good class and sponsored by Alltech, who are such great supporters of equestrian sport.” After stepping up to sponsor the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, Alltech continues to take great strides to support the sport. From the Alltech National Horse Show, also based in Lexington annually in November, to the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, which will be in Normandy, France.

he amazing story of Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon began in 1966 and continues on to today. In 1966 Joe Heitz produced a wine so distinctive that a partnership was born. The Heitz family of Napa and the May family of Martha’s Vineyard joined forces to produce a signature wine. Only 500 boxes are produced from this single vineyard Cabernet each year. Martha’s Vineyard is a complex wine known for its unique mintiness with hints of graphite, red berries, black currant, green tea, and sage. With its refined but persistent palate, smooth flavor, and incredibly silky closure, it is a wine to be savored and enjoyed.

ingus is considered a cult wine, sold at extremely high prices while remaining relatively inaccessible. It’s made from the tempranillo grape, the great grape of Spain, which is widely grown to make full-bodied red wines. Produced in an artisanal way, completely free of fertilizers and pesticides, the vineyard can generate only 500 boxes a year, given the proper environmental conditions.

Decanters EXQUISITE AIR FOR WINE by Francisco Masse

MANY RED WINES, especially young ones, and some white wines as well, benefit from the ability to “breathe”, defined as letting the bottle stand for a few minutes after opening and before consuming. However merely uncorking the bottle and leaving it for a while, is an ineffective method: the small opening of the bottle is not enough to allow an adequate oxygen input. The true connoisseur uses a fine glass container - a decanter - to oxygenate the wine, reducing the tannins that can produce a rough, astringent feel on the palate. As the wine breathes, the sediment settles out before pouring.

Riedel Eve

T

he long, winding neck of this elegant vessel allows a deep wine fall during the pouring, providing time for aeration to work its magic. Designed by Maximilien Reidel, whose family has been producing fine glass in the heart of Europe for 250 years, the winding spirals at the bottom make this piece the only decanter in the world that creates a ‘double decanting‘ as the wine moves through it. As noted in “Time” magazine, this Austrian clan of glassmakers has never bottled a wine, but they have done more to enhance the oenophile’s pleasure than many winemaking dynasties.

Riedel Amadeo

D

esigned for the house of Riedel’s 250th anniversary, this piece, like the other two Riedel decanters pictured here, is hand blown of fine leaded crystal. Only the most accomplished of glassblowers can produce the Amadeo, and each piece is numbered, a unique work of art. Its freeform shape provides a generous surface for oxygenation, and the narrow mouth means drip-free pouring. Sure to delight the wine aficionado, this fluid and elegant decanter is certainly an impressive presentation of fine vintages.

68 [ equlifestyle.com ]

18EQU_Decanters.indd 68

30/05/13 15:11

Riedel Mamba

I

nspired by the sleek form of a mamba snake, this piece speaks for itself. Its sheer beauty strikes within seconds and makes a stunning presentation (“Wine Enthusiast”). The wine opens up as it flows down the long, graceful neck and through the air pockets of its coiled base, emitting a soft gurgle as it moves. Mamba’s elegant upright tail serves as a handle, making pouring easy as the wine flows back out through the neck. This one of a kind piece with its alluring shape doubles as a fine piece of art when not being used for your prized vintages.

Peugeot Panier Duck

S

o named because of its shape - that of a French canard - this decanter is made of hand blown crystal with a shiny pewter neck, base, and handle. Designed to decant young red wines, its tilted shape facilitates oxygenation by keeping air in contact with the surface of the wine, giving it a chance to bloom. Elegant and durable, the design of this piece makes it easy to serve the wine, and minimizes the risk of dripping.

Spiegelau Loop

T

his German brand is dedicated to producing “the best glasses and containers for wine in the world.” Created by artisan craftsmen, the Loop is made from ancient mineral deposits free from impurities, resulting in brilliant and immaculate crystal. An innovative cut-out hole in the middle of the body makes for easy pouring, and provides a visual delight when filled. A standard bottle of wine aligns perfectly with the center of the hole. Simply a must-have for every wine connoisseur.

Wild Classic Chevrolet impala 1967

The SS also featured vinyl-clad Strato bucket seats, wheelhouse moldings, a black-finished grille, special SS badges encircled by red, white and blue, as well as special wheel covers. Undoubtedly, the central feature of the SS 427 was the 385 horsepower, 427-cubic inch (7.0L) Turbo-Jet V8 under the hood. The ’67 Chevy Impala is an impressive reminder of America’s glorious muscle car era.

Photos: Courtesy of Chevrolet.

When you find yourself lost in the plot of a popular supernatural TV series, don’t blame the handsome lead characters; likely it is their 1967 Impala that has you mesmerized. Introduced in 1958, these powerful cars were always among Chevrolet’s most celebrated passenger automobiles and the passion of millions of American drivers. Its distinctive symmetrical triple teardrop taillights and winged tailfins set it apart from other full-size models of the era. Through the first half of the 1960s, the Impala was the best-selling car in the United States, setting trends in both design and size. In 1966, the Impala Caprice was America’s second-most popular convertible, surpassed only by the Mustang. And then the redesigned 1967 Impala arrived. The ’67 model featured a rounded body with Corvette-inspired fender ridges, called “Coke bottle styling”, after the soda’s curvy container shape. The ’67 model traded in the triple round taillights for rectangular units. Boasting an eight-cylinder, 327 A-Barrel engine, yielding 275 horsepower, the Impala ‘67 had enough swagger to rival any leading character: Magnum P.I.’s Ferrari, Michael Knight’s incredible Trans Am or the signature bright orange Charger that the Dukes drove through Hazard. The rare Impala Super Sport (SS) took the sleek line to the next level. The Impala SS 427 was sold with a full assortment of muscle-car extras: a special dome hood, a rally-type electric clock and gauge package, a refined sports suspension, larger wheels and red-stripe tires.

SOHO

On a quiet Old tOwn street near GenOa’s pOrt, Soho Restaurant & Fish Work takes its inspiration from the hip New York neighbourhood of the same name. Since the 1960s SoHo in Manhattan has been the creative and intellectual heart and soul of New York. Soho Restaurant & Fish Work recreates the metropolitan and cosmopolitan atmosphere of its namesake with black, white, and grey old-style tiles and luxurious black leather furniture designed by Kenzo. It’s a fancy fishmonger’s where you can sit and savor the best of the morning’s catch. After choosing from the artfully displayed selections, watch the expert chefs in action. Champagne, oysters and sushi are the local favorites for evening “aperitivi,” or there is a full menu served in the venue’s two stylish downstairs rooms, featuring modern takes on old Genovese traditions such as baccala (salted white fish) with potatoes and tiny Ligurian olives. The fish is always at the height of freshness and imaginatively prepared, and the dessert selection is exceptional.

Service is impressive: friendly and helpful, efficient but unobtrusive. The staff is familiar with the more than 300 fine wines on the extensive wine list, and knowledgeable about food and wine pairings. Whether you are seated upstairs, downstairs, or outdoors in the quaint gazebo, soft music provides a nice accompaniment to dinner. On my visit to Soho, I chose the Risotto with Clams and St. Pierre’s Fish, paired with a Gewurtztraminer as recommended by the server. My companion ordered the Ravioli, which was served in a delicious broth and topped with shellfish. Every dish was exquisite. We finished with a pear and chili chocolate dessert for me, and a creme brûlée for my friend, and both exceeded our expectations. A fish shop by day, a lounge bar at sunset, and a restaurant by night, Soho Restaurant and Fish Work is a not-to-be-missed experience for the discriminating diner. A bit of Manhattan chic combined with Italian ambiance. Via Al Ponte Calvi, 20r, Génova, Italia. ristorantesoho.it

Angelini Osteria

Angelini OsteriA is surely the best itAliAn restAurAnt in lOs Angeles. If you have been to Italy, you will be reminded of the exquisite flavors of food as Italians have it at home, not the stuff they serve tourists. Anyway, I arrived with some friends on a Sunday afternoon and was really lucky to find a table, as the place is usually very crowded. We tried different antipasti but my favorite was the Capricciosa with Mixed Baby Greens, Carrots, Cherry Tomatoes and Mozzarella, it is really to die for! For the main course, I enjoyed the Lasagne Verde “Omaggio Nonna Elvira”,

that has beef and Veal Ragu. it is rich, creamy and beautifully presented and the fried basil adds an interesting texture to it. I’d say its reputation is absolutely well deserved! The Risotto with mixed seafood Ragu is also superb. Thank you, Italians, for inventing sharing at the table! I also tried the Tagliatelle with duck ragu the texture of the tagliatelle was amazing! I had a bit of the Whole Branzino Roasted in Sea Salt with Aromatic Herbs, which is filleted right before your eyes. It is salty, of course, but very fresh and tender, delicious! I have to go back to try the Grilled Lamb Chops on a bed of arugula: the best lamb chops one of my friends has ever had: he wouldn’t even want to share! As for the wine, you should really bring a connoisseur (or you can consult with their sommelier) for their wine list is definitely overwhelming. I had an awesome 2009 Chianti. It’s just great that you can order by the glass or a bottle. For dessert, I had the Tiramisu, which was just exquisite. I also had a chance to try my friends’ Pear Cheesecake, which was really nice, and Panna Cotta, which I just loved! Now I’m ready to come back with my family and enjoy one of their Weekly Specials, maybe the Stinco Veal Shank Roasted in the Wood Oven with Vegetables they serve on Fridays or the Porchetta Leg of Pork Roasted in the Wood Oven you can enjoy on Saturdays only. But this time I won’t take any chances: I’m going to reserve in advance. I don’t think I’ll get that lucky twice in such a crowded and popular place! Meanwhile, I’ll enjoy the Angelini Amatriciana Sauce I took home with me, it’s delicious! 7313 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90036 +1 323 297 0070

The Macallan single malt, simply perfect

Photo: courtesy of The Macallan.

The Single MalT ScoTch is a Scottish whisky that has been processed in a single distillery, with malted barley as the only grain ingredient. It is matured in oak cases for several years, which provides a unique taste. Ask James Bond his choice in fine whisky. He’s certain to pour you a glass of Macallan. The Macallan in Lalique marries the craftsmanship and history of two celebrated companies, one Scottish, one French. This limited edition series of Macallan single malt scotch, in specially designed decanters, represents the historic alliance between master craftsmen. Each one of four varying aged varieties of Macallan’s rich amber single malt scotch comes housed in one of four uniquely designed Lalique decanters. Roderick Kemp, the late nineteenth century architect of the quality spirit, committed himself to creating an unparalleled whiskey using only the finest ingredients. More than one hundred years later, his legacy remains thanks to the skilled hands of the Masters of Spirit and Wood, the keepers of the secret

to The Macallan’s excellence. Also gaining prominence in the late nineteenth century, Renè Lalique, the creator and artistic spirit behind Lalique crystal, saw himself as a sculptor working in glass and light, a tradition carried on by his son Marc who perfected revolutionary methods of crystal making. Twenty-five craftsmen sculpt, etch, smooth and decorate each of The Macallan in Lalique decanters. The Macallan is one of the most awarded and applauded single malts in the world. Together it is perfection in a beautiful bottle. Relish the masters of perfection - one formed in crystal the other in the distillery while you pour and savor The Macallan in Lalique IV (pictured here) is the fourth decanter in the collection. It contains whiskey that has been exclusively matured for 60 years in a Sherry seasoned cask before being released. A unique blend of artistry and excellence, this fine specimen is certainly a collaboration to be toasted, with or without Bond. themacallan.com

HELI-SKI

RAFTING

Extreme Sports

Unyielding Waters By: Verónica Aguirre and Mariana Vega

Experts in five extreme sports describe life on the edge, and why they would risk everything for the thrill of adventure. GUILLERMO MASCAREÑAS AND HIS BRAVE GROUP OF FRIENDS have a few simple reasons why they love to heli-ski: impressing the ladies, enjoying an adrenaline-filled rush, hanging in the air and experiencing the feeling of weightlessness as you descend down the mountain. Reaching paths that can only be accessed by helicopter, heli-skiing started in the 1960s and its popularity grows each year with new generations of adventurers. According to Mascareñas, Alaska lays claim to some of the world’s most dangerous and highest cliffs, along with many glaciers. Dropping in via helicopter to ski these areas can be a treacherous journey, and is not for novice skiers. Less extreme conditions, along with some of the best powder, can be found in Canada during its peak season, January to March. A great group of guides, essentially other experienced extremists, is an absolute necessity for a fun and successful trip. Veteran extreme skiers have an uncanny ability to find the perfect path down the mountain, and it’s nice to have one by your side in case you need a little bit of help, unlikely but possible. Our expert rates this sport as a nine on a scale of ten, as long as you are skiing with an experienced crew. And why go alone, if part of the adventure is to have someone there to witness the amazing things you see and do on your way down? We also encourage you to bump up your life insurance policy before you head up in the heli. wiegee.com

water per minute, falling from 300 feet above you. This is exactly what happens at Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. The Zambezi forms a natural border between Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and it is the location of some of the world’s most extreme river rafting trips. The journey begins smoothly, according to Jerónimo Vega, our rafting expert, but just a few miles away from the falls you begin to hear (and feel) an intense rumble of water crashing against rock. The Zambezi starts in Zambia almost one mile above sea level, at a width of over a mile. The Middle Zambezi, where whitewater expeditions begin, narrows to a width of about 600 feet where the water races through the savage rapids and drops hundreds of feet in elevation. The rainy season, from November to April, is one of the best times to make the journey. And if you are looking for something wild, but not quite as dangerous, you can head south to Veracruz, Mexico and raft across the Filobobos River. Summer is the best season to hit the Filobobos, from May to September. Jéronimo rates the Zambezi River a perfect ten on our extreme sport scale, and rates the Filobobos a solid eight. The easiest way to make the journey is to lease your equipment, that way you won’t have to deal with luggage. Like our heli-ski expert, Jéronimo also suggests getting a life insurance policy to keep you covered while you’re on the water. safpar.net

would never choose to knowingly swim with sharks, sailfish and marlin, but it’s exactly what Jero Prieto and his Pelagic Life Excursions company offers to those who are bold enough to join him. The best place to swim with these dangerous but gorgeous fish is off the shores of South Africa. Aside from the great white, there are five other different species of shark that you will encounter. If you don’t feel like taking the plunge to that extreme, you can head down to Playa del Carmen in Mexico and swim with the bull sharks there. The season in Mexico runs from November to March; or take a trip to the Bahamas and you can swim with the Tiger shark practically all year long. Prieto is a passionate protector of all sea life, and he advises everyone to bring their own swimming and diving gear, as he believes that you ought to be as comfortable as possible when interacting with sharks. Our expert grades this activity an eight out of ten. For your own safety, and that ofthe sharks, this adventure should only be attempted with professional supervision, though you’re unlikely to need additional life insurance.

jumping, wakeboarding and gymnastics, and you have one of the most extreme sports in the world: kite surfing, also known as kite boarding. Athleticism meets bravado as the wind rips you from a standstill to typical speeds around 30 mph. The world kite surfing record is currently 55.65 knots (over 64 mph), held by American Rob Douglas. Our kite surfing expert is Andrés Barrios and his top spot for the sport is the beautiful state of Hawaii. Acapulco, Veracruz, Baja California and the Dominican Republic are also consummate locations for novice and veteran alike. For private, remote kiting, the Cargados Shoals in the middle of the Indian Ocean and the Marshall Islands, halfway between Hawaii and Australia, are two wonferfully secret spots (shhh). Barrios rates this intense sport with a well-earned score of nine. He encourages anyone interested in kite surfing to get additional personal accident insurance, as the risk you take can be significant. Taking a lesson with a top-notch coach helps lessen the steep learning curve, and can reduce the bumps and bruises from your first trips out on the waves. The best instructors typically carry a certification from the International Kiteboarding Organization.

the excitement and freedom of flying across the blue sky like a bird? For Susana Valdés, jumping out of a plane 12,000 feet above the ground at speeds of over 125 mph, is a rush she gets to relish every day. Valdés, our expert skydiver, explains how the best locations for this extreme sport combine crisp, clean air and gorgeous scenery. Your initial jumps will most likely be tandem parachuting, where you’ll be closely connected with your instructor with a harness. And in addition to your main parachute and one in reserve, most companies use automatic devices that will deploy the reserve if you and your instructor continue at freefall speeds past a certain minimum altitude. Just like all activities involving aviation, keeping an eye on weather conditions is crucial. Though skydiving is a year-round sport, skydiving companies monitor weather and will only head up when skies are clear. Valdés rates this exhilarating activity as a four out of ten, if performed with an instructor, and as a nine once you’re cleared to jump on your own. Life insurance is always a good idea,

Mercedes Benz E 400 ENGINE: Mercedes’ e-class e400 Hybrid is a gas-electric sedan tHat coMbines HigH-tecH and eco-friendly features witHout coMproMising on perforMance.

T

he Mercedes Benz E400 Hybrid is a gas-electric, midsize sedan that combines the high-tech amenities and spacious cabin typical of E-Class series models, with the standard E350’s 3.5-liter V6 gas engine as its power base. The E400 Hybrid also sports a robust electric motor and a 0.8 kWh lithium-ion battery that adds an extra 27 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. The sedan’s total output reaches 329 horsepower, capable of launching the hybrid from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. And the E400 Hybrid still averages an impressive 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. A seven-speed automatic transmission borrowed from the standard E350 gives power to the rear wheels, while an automatic start/stop system reduces fuel consumption and emissions when the vehicle slows or stops. Then regenerative braking takes over and harnesses otherwise wasted energy, using it to recharge the lithium-ion battery. Intelligent distribution of the hybrid components in the engine bay means that, unlike many of its gas-electric counterparts, the E400 Hybrid offers as

much cabin or trunk space as conventional gas-powered cars. A performance sports car at heart, the E400 Hybrid responds to feedback from each driver’s style and the car’s motion, adjusting individual shock absorbers or braking individual wheels for sharper handling, a smoother, more composed ride and to keep the car moving in the intended direction.

Features The list of standard features included on the E400 Hybrid is formidable: leatherette upholstery, a sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, an AM/FM/CD/DVD entertainment system controlled by Mercedes’ Cockpit Management and Data (COMAND) system, a proximity key, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and 17-inch alloy wheels. And that’s just the starting point. Mercedes offers myriad optional packages for the E400 Hybrid, notably the Premium 1 Packa-

ge, which includes a navigation system with 10GB of storage space, heated and ventilated front seats, a premium sound system with an iPod/MP3 interface, Sirius XM Satellite Radio/Traffic/Weather, rearview camera, a power rear-window shade and an active multicontour driver seat. Additional options include the Lighting Package, which features full-LED headlamps, adaptive highbeam assist, headlamp cleaning system, and most impressive, the Active Curve and Corner Illumination that senses turns and curves in the road and adjusts the headlamps to follow the path of the car. If you’re looking to add a flashier feel to your hybrid, the Wheel Package features 19” 5-Double-Spoke wheels in a handsome Himalaya Grey finish. Opt for the additional three-spoke steering wheel to complete the ornate look. Other options available a la carte include leather upholstery, active cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, a rear seat DVD entertainment system, night-view assist and a heated steering wheel.

Safety

Other useful optional safety features are included in the Driver Assistance Package, such as the Active Lane Keeping Assist, which alerts the driver if the car drifts from its lane without the turn signals on, by simulating a rumble strip vibration in the steering wheel. If the driver continues to drift off-course, the system can selectively brake individual wheels to help guide the car back into its lane. Also included is Blind Spot Assist, which monitors blind spots behind and to the side of the vehicle

Fotos: Cortesía de Mercedes Benz Motors.

Additional to its ABS and ESP stability control, the E400 Hybrid sports nine complementary restraints, including two-stage front

air bags, a knee air bag for the driver and pelvic air bags, activated in collisions to give even further protection to occupants in the front seats. In the case of a rear impact, Neck-Pro front head move forward and upward to reduce the possibility of neck injuries. Driver fatigue is conservatively estimated to cause over 100,000 automobile crashes every year in the U.S., and the E400’s Attention Assist System is designed to monitor driving behavior and alert the driver if it detects signs of drowsiness on long trips. A steering sensor uses 70 parameters to establish a unique driver profile during the first 20 minutes of driving, and the system identifies signs such as erratic steering corrections drivers make when drowsy and triggers audio and dashboard video notifications.

SAFETY FIRST: ENGINEERS AT LEXUS INCREASED SAFETY ASPECTS BY WIDENING THE TRACK ALMOST TWO INCHES AND INCREASING THE BODY RIGIDITY THROUGH ADDITIONAL OPTIMALLY PLACED SPOT- AND LASER-WELD POINTS.

edesigned from the ground up, the GS luxury sedan is the new face of Lexus, and the GS 450h is the hybrid flagship of the series. Its 34mpg rating on the highway seems inconceivable given that the 450h leaps from 0 to 60 in only 5.6 seconds, and the motor boasts 338 total system horsepower. Though its stringent SULEV II emission status might be the envy of many 2.0-liter compacts, performance was not sacrificed in the development of the GS 450h. Equipped with the world’s first direct injected Atkinson-cycle engine and dual hybrid-motor system for greater response, the GS 450h generates the G-forces of a high-performance V8. Engineers at Lexus increased safety aspects by widening the track almost two inches and increasing the body rigidity through additional optimally placed spot- and laser-weld points. The GS is engineered to handle all types of curves - even those thrown by Mother Nature. By monitoring current driving conditions, available all-wheel drive automatically allocates engine power between the front and rear axles from 50/50 to as much as 30/70. This can provide improved traction and control on a wide range of road surfaces and in inclement weather.

Available Lexus Enform and Safety Connect offer live, 24-hour navigation assistance and the ability to request emergency services at the press of a button. With the new App Suite, you can make dinner reservations and order movie tickets on the fly using the industry’s first available 12.3-inch high-resolution split-screen multimedia display. Imagine an interior filled with sound so crisp and dimensional, it’s as if your favorite band were sitting in the car with you. And a system so advanced it can account for the volume and tone of unwanted ambient noise. This is the available 835-watt, 17-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio System. So you can stay focused on the road ahead, heightadjustable Heads-up Display can project key information to appear six feet in front of you. With this display, simple navigation directions, audio information, and speed, as well as your current gear and RPM, are always within your natural line of sight. Ennio Morricone Living for the music

Photo: Courtesy of Ennio Morricone.

Italian Ennio Maorricone has written music for more than 500 films and television shows, with numerous award-winning scores to his name. One of this era’s most versatile and talented composers, his scores span genres from spaghetti westerns to comedy to action to drama and beyond. Truly a legend Having done scores for hundreds of films, you have become a cinema legend. How does it feel to be an icon for so many generations of movie-goers? I don’t see myself that way. I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with talented directors, while doing what I love to do. Because I have understood them, they have allowed me to interpret their stories through my music. The result is not always what I expected but over the years I have learned to

follow my instinct and choose the projects that appeal to me. If along the way I have inspired someone, that’s an extra benefit.

In your long and full career, you have done scores as memorable as “Cinema Paradiso” and “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” What is Ennio Morricone missing? When you reach the age of eighty, you realize that the most important thing is to do what you really like. I’m very lucky and I think I always have been. I can say that I know every part of the world, I have had the experience of five lives, I’ve worked with people who inspire me, and I have a lovely family. What am I missing? Maybe learning to cook.

In recent days there has been talk about a comment you made regarding your collaboration with Quentin Tarantino on the movie “Django Unchained,” saying that you didn’t like the final result at all. How much of that is true?

I’ve never actually worked with Tarantino, and I honestly doubt that I ever would. His style is very different from mine. I know that he has used several of my songs in some of his movies, and I think that the music tells a story quite apart from what is being shown on screen. That’s not for me; I think it would be very difficult to compose an original “When you piece for him. reach the

age of eighty, you realize that the most important thing is to do what you really like”.

What music inspires Maestro Morricone? At my age one doesn’t listen to new music; I’ve tried to do so, by I always end up going back to the classics. Sometimes I get a little melancholy listening to old records, but I guess these things happen at a certain age.

Kentucky Derby Louisville’s crown jewel The first Saturday in May is traditionally one of the most special days of the year for devoted racehorse fans, friends, trainers, owners, jockeys and of course a talented group of young Thoroughbreds. The excitement stems from not only from the prospect of a great race, but also the underlying yearning we all have for another Triple Crown Winner. The run for the roses starts at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The horses are certainly gorgeous, but the fashion scene at the Kentucky Derby is famouslyfabulous. The celebration of the spring season begins here with exquisite colors and creations from hats to dresses to shoes. Over 165,000attendees come to cheer on their favorite equine. This year the rain poured down, making the scene a muddymess, but it didn’t damper the spirit or the speed of the race. Although there won’t be a Triple Crown Winner in 2013, Kentucky Derby winner Orb and his trainer “Shug” McGaughey with jockey Joel Rosario made the mud marvelous for owners Janney & Phipps Stable along with thousands of fans. The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show The Pin Oak Show debuted almost 70 years ago at J.S. Abercrombie’s private facility in Bellaire, outside of Houston, with the proceeds earmarked for charity. Soon after the show blossomed into the social event of the season. Tickets were as hard to come by as the famous run for the roses – the Kentucky Derby. Proceeds from Pin Oak helped to construct Texas Children’s Hospital in 1954 and the show continues to support the hospital. As the decades passed the prestige remained steadfast as well as the contributions to worthy causes, including Houston’s Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms and Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance. Along with fabulous VIP evenings, yet another Pin Oak tradition, long gone from most horse shows, are the perpetual trophies and special presentations awarded each year. In a photo below, Jana Arnoldy and Robert Gilroy are holding the traditional ‘Hatter Derby’ magnum of Moet & Chandon champagne. After the event the winner’s name is encrusted on the bottle in Swarovski crystals and presented to them at the Pin Oak “What to Wear to that Equestrian Affaire” fashion show coming up in February. Fabulous!

Great Times in SoCal From Grand Prix to Great Gatsby, equestrians celebrated spring in southern California with Blenheim EquiSports. Easter ‘Saturday’ included an Easter egg hunt, brunch and, of course, the Easter Bunny. The season’s social season went into full swing in April with the Great Gatsby Gala at the Vintage Steakhouse. Adjacent to the historic Capistrano depot, this ideal location includes a restored 1927 Pullman parlor car and 1887 Freight House bar, not to mention delicious dining and divine dancing. An evening at the unmistakably marvelous mansion, El Milagro near La Jolla, made the Ranch & Coast Classic in May even more magnificent.
