Some Sumptuous Shopping LOS ANGELES & NEW YORK

Synonymous with what’s hip, trendy and essential in fashion, Fred Segal is a collection of boutiques that will satisfy any shopping appetite – apparel for men, women, kids wear, shoes, hats, cosmetics and more – plus a cool cafe. An L.A. shopping institution since1958, Fred Segal opened a 700 s. f. retail store on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, with the vision of updated casual sportswear for men and women that coincided with the demands of the new decade. Two years later Segal, the man behind the name, saw the future and opened the first jeans-only store. It was a wild success – denim jeans were going for an unheard price of $19.95 when previous pairs had sold for $3. Fred Segal continued to grow and prosper, meanwhile staying true to the founding keywords—fashion, quality, satisfaction, service, selection and fun. Over the last half-century, the retail options expanded through a unique approach to retailing, employee store ownership. By taking an individual’s area of fashion expertise and empowering them with ownership, Segal’s employee-owners provided a unique and unparalleled collection of fashion that continues to attract trendsetters and entertainment royalty. Depending on the era, shoppers who frequented Fred Segal included Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson, Madonna, Oprah, Brad Pitt, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, Matt Damon and more. So after a long shopping excursion, customers and celebrities alike can relax at the salon and spa or eat at one of the two delicious restaurants, the Comfort Café or Umami Burger. 420 & 500 Broadway in Santa Monica. fredsegal.com

New York

It was 111 years ago when Edwin Goodman and Herman Bergdorf opened a small tailor shop in New York. Goodman was the first couturier to introduce ready-to-wear, changing the way New York woman dressed and making Bergdorf Goodman a premier American and French fashion destination. The small shop expanded and in 1928 moved their 5th Avenue location, the former site of the beautiful Cornelius Vanderbilt mansion. Bergdorf Goodman’s name has been attached to fashion over the decades, including designing Jacqueline Kennedy’s inaugural ball dress, the debut of Michael Kors, and the 1999 opening of The Beauty Level, introducing the US debuts of Amore Pacific, Guerlain, and more. The BG Restaurant, famous for its Gotham salad, has one of the best Central Park views. The best names in the footwear industry—Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Blahnik—are part of the Shoe Salon, one of the largest displays of shoes in the world. Bergdorf Goodman takes windowshopping to an entirely new level with their impressive and innovative decoration. Thanks to Linda Fargo, David Hoey and the talented creative team, the windows at Bergdorf Goodman are a spectacular museum, decorated with paintings, photographs and the best trends on extraordinary mannequins or even the occasional ‘live’ person. A sight to be seen on 5th Avenue inside and out. bergdorfgoodman.com

The Hendri Bendel store is an icon in Manhattan. Named for the original owner, a milliner (hat maker), who came to New York from Louisiana in 1895 to open his own shop. A pioneer in many aspects, by 1913 Bendel had created the brown and white stripe bag with his name, had one of the first stores on 5th Avenue, was the first to host a semi-annual sale as well as an in-store fashion show. In the 1960’s the store featured the work of Andy Warhol as an illustrator and began the concept of a ‘famed street of shops’ within the store. Receiving landmark status in the 1990’s, the store resides in two landmark buildings, the Rizzoli Building and Coty Building. Post renovation, new ownership and its 100th birthday, the retail haven is still true to the vision of delighting fashionable women through innovation. Herni Bendel is slated ‘A Girl’s Playground’. On the main floor you will find the “Gazebo shop” featuring the Henri Bendel accessories collection, and cosmetics brands such as Mally Beauty, Kevin Aucoin and Laura Mercier. On the second floor enjoy a tremendous costume jewelry selection, sunglasses, small leather goods and fragrances. And on the last level visit the prestigious Frédéric Fekkai hair salon. henribendel.com

Looks EXPRESSIONS

Keep it simple THE NEW SEASON is all about simplifying. This doesn’t mean going absolutely minimal, just be certain that each piece is essential. One idea is a solid color suit and shirt, in neutral tones like pale gray, but infuse it with a touch of the season - include a print tie, scarf or pocket square. A bright belt or a pair of colorful shades also adds a touch of fun to your outfit while still looking sharp. Loafers are definitely the shoes of the season, no longer strictly casual, also a great fit for the workplace.

Eton Shirts

EVERY DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN’S WARDROBE includes certain essentials, the building blocks that are used to create exceptional outfits. These may not be the pieces that garner the most attention, but without them no ensemble would be complete. Finding an exemplary shirt is a crucial element to a perfect outfit, the difference between knowing what to wear and simply getting dressed. Dress shirts all share certain characteristics, but the finest shirts stand out in several aspects: the material, the shape of the design, the patterns and colors of the fabric, the buttons and other embellishments. Annie and David Pettersson founded Eton in 1928, and their original craftsmanship, married with innovative weaving technology and a unique finishing process, allowed them to grow from a small, twoperson operation in Sweden to a company known worldwide for its superior quality. Attention to detail has always been at the heart of the process for Eton. It begins with designing the fabrics in house – Eton uses only the finest Pima and Egyptian cotton and the most vibrant dyes. And

no detail is too insignificant – the buttons have a unique, patented design, and even the buttonholes feature 125 stitches, significantly more than other dress shirts. A standout series is the Eton Red Ribbon collection, business shirts that form the centerpiece of Eton’s portfolio. The Red Ribbon shirts feature a wide variety of exclusive patterns, colors and details, combined with artisanal tailoring and an assortment of collars and cuffs to ensure an unimpeachable fit. Thanks to a unique spinning, weaving and high-tech, 35-step finishing process, the sophisticated look of these shirts will last all day. The manufacturing expertise ensures that the shirts retain their true colors for long-lasting style. In addition to the Red Ribbon collection, Eton has launched a Black Ribbon series of formal shirts and a hand-made Diamond Collection. Eton shirts can be found worldwide, from Dubai to London to New York, indicative of the company’s global success. Eton prides itself on creating tomorrow’s vintage – update your wardrobe with shirts from their collections and join the legacy of flawless craftsmanship and singular fashion. etonshirts.com

OG Shades

ImagIne Holly golIgHtly In Breakfast at tIffany’s – portrayed by the lovely Audrey Hepburn – standing at the Tiffany’s window display while having a croissant and coffee. The quintessential 5th Avenue breakfast to go. To reenact this scene fashionably you must have the right shades. Make a scene with OG frames. With an incredible sense of creativity and flair, Olivier Goldsmith put sunglasses on the fashion map. OG put black spectacles on Michael Caine, white frames on Hepburn, star after star completed their look in designs by Oliver Goldsmith. Founded in 1926, P. Oliver Goldsmith’s company, first set out to make protective lenses for the eyes. A few decades later, protective lenses evolved into iconic fashion statements, declarations of individuality. Designers - Givenchy, Vidal Sassoon and Dior - approached Goldsmith to design frames to complement their collections. OG became synonymous with stars and style. Revolutionizing, OG was

the first brand to create a winter collection, runway editions and the first sunglasses featured in chic magazines like Vogue. The brand transformed sunglasses into fashion and pioneered a new concept: Eyewear. From bamboo frames, to butterflies, eyewear has become much more than protection; it is a must-have fashion accessory. A family business since the beginning, now with more than eighty years of experience, OG continues to provide clients with innovative and stylish ways of seeing the world. Committed to finding the best craftsman has led OG to work with frame-makers from England, their home base, as well as Italy, Japan and Germany. Eyewear as we know it today is thanks to the legacy of this house. Protect your vision in style with the original trendsetter, go lightly or go large but don’t go without a great pair OG frames. olivergoldsmith.com

BEAUTY AND THE DREAM

IN LOS ANGELES large pieces of land are few and far between. Drive just 30 minutes out of Beverly Hills to Santa Susana and find an exquisite piece of property on 123 acres, Hummingbird Nest Ranch. Welcoming with an oak tree lined road and wide expanses of gorgeous green grass, the ‘nest’ includes a Mission-style main house, several guest houses, one called Sitting Bull from the 1920’s, and a pristine equestrian facility. The property has been the setting for several Hollywood films and television shows, is the idyllic spot for a wedding, and a fabulous location for a social event, but focusing on the equine aspect, Hummingbird Nest is home to El Sueño de Amistad Training, the dream of Stefanie Saperstein and her partner Richard Padilla. With a magnificent thirty-seven stall main barn, surrounded by nature and all the amenities of an ideal show jumping place, there are gorgeous turnout paddocks, an all weather sand ring, a large grass grand prix field, and a derby field. The natural obstacles on the field are comparable to those found at Spruce Meadows, one of the top competition facilities in the world. With no hint of the city life, the ranch also boasts a lake and a bell tower that was built from the bricks of the original cattle barn. Stefanie’s parents, David and Suzanne, who share her love of horses, built the entire estate. Though only Stefanie continues to ride, her father maintains the facility to allow for the equestrian dream. Stefanie and Richard actively seek to offer the advantages of El Sueño de Amistad’s base at Hummingbird Nest to the show jumping world. With a goal to add extraordinary value, the pair already hosted several unique events and have an annual schedule that will bring in top clinicians, course

designers and riders from all around the world. Moreover, they are inviting trainers to trailer in and school with their own horses and clients. With a love for all things equestrian, a network for top of the line event management and the spectacular backdrop of Hummingbird Nest the sky is the limit for El Sueño’s calendar. Stefanie and Richard invite all show jumpers, derby horses and riders to consider El Sueño events as a part of their schedule. Whether a one-day sojourn or a long-term training plan, equestrian dreams are available in Santa Susana. esda.us

Grooming expressions

Smooth Shave

Although not extensive, there are a few essential grooming practices for gentleman. Among those procedures is shaving. Too often rough and irritating on the skin, if armed with the right tools, the act of removing facial hair can be a pleasurable, even pampering, experience. So men, read on. And women don’t neglect your men; this could change their, and your, life. Equ discovered a brand of products that are bound to become must in every man’s kits - Zirh’s, the best in man’s skincare. Focusing on the all-important shave, we recommend Zirh’s Shaving Products to achieve that clean-cut look, with a fresh and youthful texture. Zirh’s basic shaving kit contains three must-have products simply indispensable to making shaving a pleasure. First ready the skin for the razor with their Prepare Shave Oil, a fragrance-

free oil made from a combination of herbs, vitamins and plant extracts including passion flower and Vitamin E. Designed to add a protective layer and allow the razor to glide gently, this botanical oil helps prevent irritation. Follow with their Men’s Shave Gel, an aloe vera gel that moistens the skin, and instead of producing foam, remains transparent, so shaving is both easier and less messy. The foam-free aspect is also good for sideburns and other facial hair. Finish the process with their Soothe Post-Shave Treatment, with 60 nutrients, minerals and vitamins including aloe vera, ginseng and acacia, this moisturizing solution helps skin recover its natural smoothness post shaving. Look and feel barbershop fresh. ZIrh’s exclusive line of men’s skin care products are must-have at home and on the road. zirh.com

News SPIRITS

Draco et Phoenix

Photo: Courtesy of Tibaldi.

THE TAO OF WRITING

TWO OF THE MOST DIVINE CREATURES in Chinese mythology are the dragon and the phoenix. Beyond representing seasons, elements and more, these sacred creatures personify the heavenly gods and symbolize precision and perfection, ideal qualities in a writing instrument. Tapping into this spiritual power, Tibaldi created the Latin-named “Draco et Phoenix” special edition fountain pen and roller ball collection. Limited to a production run of only 99 sets, these pens feature key elements from the legends of each animal. Fashioned from black resin, the regal dragon on the fountain pen impeccably complements the elegant phoenix that graces the ivory resin roller ball. Master craftsmen meticulously carve the pens from a single bar of raw material, ensuring dependable performance. The blank and white beauty of the pens evokes a sense of yin and yang, and the sacred dragon and phoenix are both aspects of those primal principles. Solar and lunar power, the imperial supremacy of the emperor and the empress – all intertwined in hand-painted brilliance on the pen barrels. Both the Draco and the Phoenix pens are embellished with the Clou de Paris pattern, found on premium timepieces and other luxury items since the 18th century. This diamond patterned finish is created with ster-

ling silver and plated with rose gold, and each Clou de Paris engraving is rigorously sized in divine proportion – a ratio believed to be among the most aesthetically pleasing in nature. Attention to even the smallest detail is evident in this spiritual set of divine writing instruments. Technological innovation meets sublime elegance with every pen created by Tibaldi, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, and has developed collectible showpieces for brands such as Bentley and Bugatti. Tibaldi’s Fulgor Nocturnus, adorned with diamonds and other gemstones, sold at an auction in 2010 for a record $8 million dollars. Capture the pure essence of writing with this timeless and exclusive collection. tibaldi.it

AS KIDS, WE ALL DREAMED OF finding a treasure chest, brimming with rare and priceless riches. That dream is still alive today, only now the difference is that the treasure is real, and we pursue a way to protect it. Luxury watches deserve an opulent and precious sanctuary, and the watch cases of Rapport London are truly unparalleled. A discussion of luxury watches inevitably revolves around several principle names: Patek Phillipe, Vacheron Constantine, Cartier, Ladoire, to list but a few. There is, however, another name that deserves mention among these greats of horology. Though he may not be associated with tourbillions, guillochĂŠ dials and complications, Maurice A. Rapport established a legacy of precision watch cases over one hundred years ago that continues to this day. In 1898, Rapport, an energetic entrepreneur only twenty years of age, created his first timepiece. Garnering great acclaim, the watch allowed Rapport the reputation to build a company and brand, that today, four generations later, continues to be an industry pioneer. Rapport London recently launched the Portman Collection, a stunning group of watch cases headlined by the limited edition Studded Cases. Accommodating up to four watches, these cases come in traditional brown leather with brass studs and edges, or black matte rubber with rose gold

Padparadscha Sapphire

Pretty in Pink. Exquisite in appearance and design, the Lugano Padparadscha sapphire ring is an elegant yet bold statement. Although the stone has not received the fanfare of other precious gems, the Padparadscha sapphire is truly unique. The original use of the term Padparadscha is derived from the Sanskrit/Singhalese padmaraga, a color akin to the lotus flower. Unlike other rubies and sapphires, the finest color of padparadscha is not directly a function of color intensity (saturation). This ring features a cushion cut Padparadscha sapphire with a delicate pink color. Lugano’s designers framed the stone with 1.98 carats of fancy pink gems and collection diamonds. The result is a breathtaking ring with a sparkling pink shimmer. Versatile, this piece can also be worn as a pendant. Simply stunning. An international jewelry firm established almost forty years ago, Lugano Dimaonds has a worldwide reputation as a leading diamond manufacturer. This entre into the business sets Lugano apart from other jewelry designers, as the stone is the main character in every creation.

As explained by Lugano’s C.E.O and Founder, Moti Ferder, “Whereas most jewelry designers create the design and then find the stone that will fit to their plans, we start from picking out a stone that is rare or unique or creates a story and we design around that.” Offering an unparalleled selection of jewelry from bridal to brooches, Lugano also creates pieces with exceptional custom design. Their skilled artisans and craftsmen will work with a client to bring an idea or vision to life. Polo Passion

High Season in Wellington, Florida

A

s sparking champagne pours into a flute, a stiff leather boot creaks when a loose spur is tightened. The reverberating vibration of galloping hooves passes by, just steps from where you stand, while a group of oversized hats, flowing print dresses and matching wedge heels prance by. A goal is scored. A cheer bursts from the crowd. This is polo. Polo can mean any number of things, depending on whom you ask. But for many who flock to Wellington in the winter months, polo is simply everything. Wellington exploded as a wintertime hub for equestrian sports about twenty years ago. The International Polo Club (IPC) began hosting tournaments in 2002, securing the area's status as an elite polo destination. It now attracts the very best in polo competition annually January through April. Three major high-goal tournaments take place during the winter season, and all of them host finals at IPC, which is by far the largest, and most high profile polo club in the United States.

09/05/13 13:10

THE PLAYERS Despite its glittery reputation as a sport of princes and kings, the men and women who play polo spend long days with horses involving many hours of practice, as it is not an easy game to play well. The pace is fast, the ball is small and the competition fierce. Equally intense is the fact that polo is the only organized team sport where woman and men compete on equal ground. Naturally, the best polo players in the world gather here at this time of year to compete in top rated tournaments. With a 'see and be seen' atmosphere lining the field every week, Sunday polo at IPC attracts thousands who come for the high level of sport, and thousands more who come to be part of the over-the-top fashion scene on the sidelines. A sharp eye can spot celebrities such as Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Bo Derek, amongst others in their box seats, intently watching the game. At press time, the end of March, through most of April 2013, this passionate polo set will watch, and if warranted participate, in the most prestigious tournament in the United States, the 109th U.S. Open Polo Championship. Held in Wellington since 2004 and newly sponsored by Maserati, the U.S. Open is a unique display of top-level riding by the most well-known and highest-ranking players in the sport. (A rating system from -2 to 10 ranks players according to ability, with 10 being the highest ranking a player can achieve.) With bracketed teams that sport sponsorship from the likes of Audi and Piaget, the backing required behind each enterprise is enormous, and as polo grows, it continues to attract more sponsors. There are just eight 10-goal players in the world, and at this time of year they are all living and competing in Wellington. Ten-goaler Sapo Caset spends the entire season in this Florida town, and in early March was entered in the 26-Goal USPA Piaget Gold Cup, riding for team Piaget. Caset’s skill is almost inborn; like so many professional players he was born into a polo family, and it’s all he’s ever known. Why does Caset, who grew up playing polo on his family’s ranch in Argentina, come to Florida in the winter? “This is one of the best seasons in the world,” he says. “Polo is my life, it’s my passion. It’s a way of living, and to anyone who hasn’t seen it, I say to them, come out and watch it. You combine the players with the horses, and the speed, and there is nothing like it.” The story is much the same for other legends of the sport; tengoaler Adolfo Cambiaso, brothers and fellow ten-goalers Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres, and even Nic Roldan, who at 8 goals is one of the highest rated Americans in polo. They all come from families with deep roots in the game that go back generations. Polo is in their blood, and it lives on through their passion.

THE GAME On a field that is the largest in organized sports, teams of four players compete in up to six “chukkers,” the name for every seven and a half minute period of the game. Even the fittest horse can’t play for much longer than one chukker. With eight players on the field at any given time, a large group of horses is needed to field each team, requiring a team of skilled grooms on the sidelines to manage the equine athletes. Between each chukker, riders rush to the side of the field and switch horses, sometimes leaping from saddle to saddle without ever touching the ground. On any given week, a dozen or more polo matches are held at IPC and other ancillary clubs in the immediate area. During most of these events, an unpretentious tailgate atmosphere welcomes all to pull up their vehicle to the side of the field and take in a game. Players of all levels gather in Wellington to admire the sport’s most famous names, while working their own way up the ranks. Professional polo player Brandon Phillips, originally from chilly Toronto, Canada, moved to Wellington full time a handful of years ago. “I play here now anywhere from four to seven months per year. It’s the one place every year where I know I will be,” says the 5-goal player. “It’s the biggest season, and the longest season, and I really enjoy it.”

THE TOWN Throughout Wellington, private farms and polo clubs sport long tracks where grooms exercise their polo ponies twice a day. Green grass polo fields are more common than parks, and in the local tack shops and delis, men and women in dusty white jeans gather to talk about the week’s games. On Sundays, social scene of coastal Palm Beach comes inland to Wellington, but for the rest of the week, polo belongs to those who mostly drive dually trucks and love to get their hands dirty. From the top, high-goal level on down to beginners on trusted school ponies, everyone involved in polo is passionate about the game. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a two or a three or a ten, it’s the only place to be,” Phillips adds. “You have the best players, the best horses, the best everything in the world here at this time of year.” Whether polo means dressing up on a Sunday and sipping champagne, or donning white jeans with a bright polo shirt and galloping a few ponies, truly, there is nothing quite like polo in Wellington. The thousands of passionate polo-ites who live the life pre, during and post the game would ask, “What else is there?”

The location was surreal, with planes passing close to the penthouse and Central Park beneath our feet. Besides this shoot, some of my favorites memories from Manhattan: opera at Lincoln Center and having dinner at Rue 57.”

PAZ VEGA (LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA) “This actress has a fierce look and intensity. She does have some similarities to Penélope Cruz; but she does seem to have her own light, and her photos turn out perfectly. I have great memories of travels through California around the time of this shoot: Long Beach to Manhattan Beach, then up the Central coast for amazing food and drinks at the Hearst Castle.”

ELSA BENÍTEZ (STUDIO, MEXICO CITY)) “Aside from being Mexico’s most recognizable top model, Elsa was chosen by Sports Illustrated to appear on their special swimsuit edition. I admit it was quite intimidating to work with a woman like that. She has perfect height and proportions, she has appeared in numerous magazines, but my idea this time was to present a different Elsa—one not so

LIV TYLER (CONDESA, MEXICO CITY) “The concept of this shoot was incredibly difficult, taking photos of Liv posing with exotic birds. Not an easy task, but she stayed very cool the entire time. She is absolutely enchanting. The pictures I shot that day traveled around the world for magazines like Elle in Belgium, the Czech Republic and more.”

“I went to Paris for a fashion shoot. No city on earth has better light than Paris—there is 180 degrees of sky—just imagine the photos you can take outdoors. Even though I was working with really gorgeous models, the truth is that all Parisian girls have style; even on the subway you feel like you’re watching a catwalk. My favorite adventure in Paris would include picking up falafel at Le Marais for a picnic at the Jardin du Place des Vosges, or a bike ride from the Arc du Triomphe to the Place de la République.”

ELSA PATAKY (STUDIO, MEXICO CITY) “She is one of the most amazing women I’ve ever worked with; she has unparalleled natural beauty. We had a photo session in my studio in Mexico City. Even though she is a huge celebrity, not only in Spain but worldwide, she was comfortable enough to let her guard down a little bit so the photos would have a more natural feel.”

MEXICO’S NEXT TOP MODEL AND THE BOOK PORTRAIT ALOUD (MEXICO, NATIONAL SCALE) “I recently completed a book featuring 25 portraits of Mexican artists, Portrait Aloud, that included Soriano, Angliano, Cauduro, Javier Marín and Leonora Carrington, among others. It was seven years in the making. I’m also judge for Mexico’s Next Top Model; it is such a fun set, plus I get spend time with the most beautiful women on the fashion scene.”

A Great Pairing:

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Bella Donna are Brilliant in the Inaugural AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix at HITS Thermal

O

n her flight home to Germany after winning the AIG Thermal 1 Million Dollar Gran Prix, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum happily took her hefty check through customs. Both literally and figuratively, the winning rider returned to Europe with prize money totaling $350,000 as well as the oversized lottery-esque check presented to her after she and her London Olympic Games mount Bella Donna mastered the inaugural million-dollar class at HITS Thermal. After the pair’s clean round guaranteed a jump-off, Michaels-Beerbaum exited the arena all smiles, bending over to wrap her arms around the neck of Bella Donna. Raised in southern California, Michaels-Beerbaum was ecstatic to come “home” and win the big class. “California is my home and it was great to compete here again and ride for this kind of prize,” she said. “Money like this is more often given away in Europe and it is bringing the American standard to a whole new level. It’s a tremendous step and the future of the sport is becoming more and more exciting in this country.” Her words were music to many ears after the level of American show jumping has been questioned in recent years and a quest to raise it to match or best the caliber seen in Europe has come to the forefront.

Acclaimed as one of the more difficult jumping tests presented on American soil, designed by world-renowned rider Conrad Homfeld, Michaels-Beerbaum and Bella Donna channeled their inner Olympians and appeared cool, confident and focused when they entered the ring near the end of the order. “The course was brilliant and a very good test for $1 million,” said Michaels-Beerbaum. “There weren’t any bad pictures out there today – some rails came down, but overall it was very good competition.” Seven-weeks of anticipation culminated this week with the premiere of a million-dollar class on the West Coast. There were 40 competitors vying for a slice of that pie, and after 32 had completed the first-round course without a single clear, it appeared that potentially there would be a jump-off of four-faulters. Spectators looked on in anticipation as the thirty-third entry to go, Canadian John Pearce, now residing in Bermuda Dunes, California, rode in on his long-time equine partner Chianto (owned by Forest View Farm /Allison Moore). The crowd burst into cheers and applause when the pair left all the rails up and within the time allowed. The second clear round over the jumps came from New Zealander Duncan McFarlane and Simone Coxe’s Mr. Whoopy. The duo, a West

Coast favorite, broke the beam just fractions of a second over the time allowed, resulting in an unfortunate time fault. No jump-off but an eventual third place effort. With three countries represented in the top three, nine different nations made it into the top-twenty money on this eventful afternoon. The Million Dollar Class also enticed East Coast riders Kirsten Coe, Margie Engle, McLain Ward, Peter Wylde and Candice King to fly West. Michaels-Beerbaum had a few choices for mounts, but Bella Donna was her first pick. “I have the most experience with Bella and when I walked the course this morning I was 100% positive that I made the right decision,” she said. “I trained Bella Donna with her last owner and said that if she ever wanted to sell the horse I wanted to be the first in her mind and I was. It took me a long time to get her ridable, but she qualified for the World Cup Final as a nine-year old and that just shows how good she is.” Pearce piloted a relatively older, yet wildly successful, horse to second-place honors, riding the 17-year-old Chianto. “I can’t even count how many grand prix he has won for me and I am

just so proud of how far he has come,” he said. Pearce and Chianto are regular million-dollar competitors and were third in the first Pfizer Million in Saugerties, New York in 2010. Duncan McFarlane admits that high-stakes classes are keeping the sport alive. “It gives the owners a real desire to invest in these horses and keep the business thriving,” he said. McFarlane was second in the 2011 Pfizer Million in Saugerties and admits that his next goal is to head east again in September for the fourth-annual event, now under the title Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix. (Zoetis was formerly known as Pfizer Animal Health). As the sun set on the 2013 HITS Desert Circuit, the question to HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri was: ‘After offering two million dollar classes, how will he up the ante?’ In the post-event press conference, Struzzieri answered: 2014 will welcome the Triple Crown of show jumping. Million-dollar classes will be featured at HITS Thermal, Saugerties and now Ocala with a significant monetary rider bonus for any horseand-rider pair that wins all three.

Smoking Pipes CONTEMPLATE AND CHILL OUT

THE AURA OF CONTEMPLATION AND RELAXATION that comes from smoking a great pipe is irreplaceable. And with our fast-paced, want-it-now lifestyles and demanding schedules, having the time to enjoy a good pipe is a rare occurrence. Equ aims to entice you to indulge by presenting these five fabulous pipes. For those who enjoy the pleasure of a pipe, we recommend that you thoughtfully consider every aspect of the process: finding the perfect specimen that slides effortlessly into your hand, and then choosing the perfect blend of tobacco, and finally discovering that undisturbed and tranquil location for a peaceful smoke. Whether it is a peace pipe or you are simply at peace when smoking it, the experience should be in done in style.

TYPES OF TOBACCO There are several key types of natural tobacco plants, each a descendant of the original Nicotiana tabacum line. Virginia, named after the state where it was first introduced, is the most widely grown type of tobacco in the world. Also known as “bright tobacco”, it features colors ranging from yellow to mahogany. It has a mild, smooth strength with just a touch of sweetness. Burley tobacco originated in Kentucky, and has a medium strength and an aroma that features chocolate highlights. Its colors can range from light reddish to dark brown leaves. The Orientals – Turkish Izmir, Yenidje, Bafra and Samsoun – are among the most unique types of tobacco. They generally produce smaller leaves and are often sun-cured, sometimes even fermented to bring out a stronger aroma. Over time, many hybrids have emerged, some valued for bountiful yields, others for resistance to disease or pests, while others for their distinctive aroma or flavors. Though pipe tobacco companies do not release specific details on the genetics behind their particular mixes, discerning pipe smokers will recognize creative concoctions such as tobacco infused with Kentucky bourbon or tobacco matured in oaken Sherry barrels.

he iconic image of the famous detective from Baker Street smoking his pipe is the source of inspiration for several collections from Peterson of Dublin. The Mycroft, named after the fictional Holmes’ older brother, is made with carefully selected briarwood and mounted with the hallmark Peterson sterling silver band. As with any pipe in this collection, it is available with a Peterson lip or fishtail mouthpiece and in natural gold mounted, ebony or rustic finishes.

Hermès:

Equine Beginnings, New Innovations & Equestrian Excellence BY JACKIE MCFARLAND

Fabrice Crepsel, Anais Bernier, Courtney Caverzasi, Mathieu Pinon & the new Hermès Cavale saddle.

A

lthough an introduction isn’t necessary for a name like Hermès, it is notable that the name was that of a young orphaned German immigrant, Thierry Hermès, who had a gift for leatherwork. In 1837 he opened a shop focused on creating fine bridles and harnesses for the most elite horse carriages, at the time an essential mode of transportation. Since this beginning of craftsmanship in leather, six generations of enterprising descendants, artisans and designers have created pristine pieces encompassing elegance and exquisite style. A sixth generation member of the family, PierreAlexis Dumas, leads the artistic direction of the iconic brand. Utilizing the strong and strikingly handsome saddle stitch, which can only be done by hand, Hermès created a long line of products including the Hermès signature saddles and handbags. The beautiful

pieces and accessories originated from imported leather materials using the distinct Hermès craftsmanship, beginning with 1900 Haut a Courroies bag designed to carry saddles. Yet another equine inspiration, is the well known, must-have scarf creations which evolved from jockey silks in 1937, marking their 100th anniversary year. A brief chronological study reveals the strength of family members into the Hermès culture, both by birth and by marriage. Thierry’s son Charles-Emile, continued the Hermès tradition of creating harnesses and bridles for elite clients around the world. The business moved to the Paris address rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in 1880, which is where retail sales commenced and continue to this day. At the turn of the century, third generation, Emile-Maurice and Adolphe, obtained exclusive rights for the use of the new American mechanism called ‘the zipper’, and produced the first French-

made leather products that zipped, including a leather jacket for the Prince of Wales. A handbag collection started soon after, when Emile-Maurice’s wife couldn’t find a suitable bag. Expansion ideas proved good business, as motorcars were replacing carriages. By 1835 the Hermès Frères unknowingly established the ‘Kelly’ bag, which Grace Kelly made famous by using it to hide her pregnancy. The move into the aforementioned scarves was another ingenious transition. “Leather, sport and a tradition of fine elegance” was how Emile-Maurice described the Hermès philosophy. Succeeded by Robert-Dumas-Hermes (who was related only by marriage, so added the Hermes name to his own), Emile-Maurice’s ideas continued on. Mid twentieth century the carriage logo and signature orange became a part of the brand. However it was the fifth generation that took the business of Hermès to soaring new heights. Through Jean-Louis Dumas’s vision and management, the company blossomed from a beautiful family flower to a well-manicured garden of offerings in ready-to-wear as well as haute couture, jewelry and watches, leather products from shoes to handbags to equestrian and more. He also added an element of unusual yet chic with items such as ostrich-skin jeans and python motorcycle jackets, which attracted a young, hip audience. The annual numbers increased exponentially (from millions to billions) in a little more than a quarter of a century. After Dumas retired in 2006, the first non-relation took the reins as co-CEO and then CEO, Patrick Thomas. Along with Pierre-Alexis handling artistic direction, the company is steadfast on the same values from which it was originally built – style, enduring quality and true craftsmanship. In today’s fast-paced technological world, we don’t often see a well-established, successful business remain ‘in the family’. Over the years, Hermès has grown beyond its original roots, however that essence remains intact.

The Hermès DerbyC ourse. A sampling from the Catalogue D’Equitation.

EquEstrian ExcEllEncE The name Hermès is known in equestrian circles on many levels from leather goods to fashion, on and off the horse. As a tribute to the animal that was truly their first customer, the company chooses to sponsor an elite group of equestrian events each season. The first of the year was a lovely and daring class on the grass, the $50,000 Hermès Jumper Derby during the seventh week of the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FLA. The setting was idyllic, the competition exciting and Hermès hosted a fabulous party with a perfect view of the rather tricky course. A jumper derby by definition is a stamina test – the challenging class incorporates an open field, natural and often difficult obstacles, hills and banks plus combinations and other technical questions. It is essentially a mix of a show jumper and a crosscountry course. British course designer Richard Jeffery, set a demanding track for the $50,000 Hermès Jumper Derby that featured a liverpoolliverpool combination, derby bank, table bank, open water, devil’s dyke and plenty of other challenging obstacles that numbered twenty in total. With only two clear rounds, speed was key, and the top three riders, all Irish ironically, finished with just three onehundredths of a second of each other. Irishman

Andrew Bourns and his relatively new mount Gatsby topped the field. “I am very happy with Gatsby today. It was a big step up for him and he really answered the call. I was a little worried about the length of the track and the heat. I thought it might take its toll, but he actually held up very well. Coming to the last fence he was pulling me just as hard as he was to the first fence. I was actually very happy with that, “ Bourns said with a smile. Bourns agreed that the class was a real crowd pleaser. “Any time a class goes down to the wire with such a tight margin, it makes it fun for everybody. It was thrilling,” he noted.

innovation and artistry Although Hermès continues to create stunning products for the horse, rider and stable, the brand is

also vested in the best fit for the athlete. Beautiful craftsmanship is just one layer of a multi-dimensional piece like a saddle sitting on a powerful grand prix show jumper, hunter, dressage horse, polo pony or eventing mount. Every saddle made by Hermès is created from beginning to end by one craftsman in their Paris location. The skill and in-depth knowledge of the maker is mixed with the expertise of a panel of international riders, veterinarians, new technology and as always the best materials. Those in attendance at the fabulous Wellington Hermès Jumper Derby soiree in the stylish secondstory cabana above the field were some of the first to receive an introduction to the new Hermès Cavale saddle. Fabrice Crespel, European equestrian sales manager for Hermès France, and equestrian ambassador Mathieu Pinon presented the gorgeous and meticulously designed creation. Simon Delestre, a member of the French Olympic equestrian team and Hermès International-sponsored rider, participated in each step of the design process. Seeing the saddle in action, newly appointed Hermès of Paris-sponsored rider Nicholas Dello Joio competed in a Hermès Cavale saddle at the event. The saddle is officially launching at the Saut Hermès competition in the heart of Paris. A CSI 5* and Young Riders competition, the Nave of the stunning Grand Palais is magically transformed from April 12 -14 for this spectacular Hermès sponsored show jumping event.

Opulent yet young, this wine is lively, clear, imposing, earthy and spicy, revealing intense flavor hints of prunes, berries and currants that add greatness to its full body. Unbelievably smooth, it has an unparalleled grace and harmony. You can enjoy it until 2030.

Oyster 825

Few moments are as cherished as those spent out on the open seas. The hypnotic peacefulness of waves lapping the sides of the boat, the tranquil absence of traffic and city noise, the rush of the wind as it pulls at the sails. A sailing sanctuary that can only be fully appreciated once experienced. And few sailboats are as luxurious as the elegant Oyster 825, the new pearl from the acclaimed Oyster brand that celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Oyster’s custom superyachts are renowned throughout the sailing world for their quality, comfort and performance. The 825 yacht features two deck mould layouts, both with state-ofthe-art, sliding glass companionways that enhance the feeling of light and space below decks. The deck saloon layout, featured in the photos above, highlights a fully open entertainment area; the raised saloon version incorporates a larger covered space. The Oyster 825 has nearly 15% more interior space than its predecessor, the wonderful Oyster 82. The additional space allows for three double cabins aft, each with larger hullports featuring ‘Seascape’ windows, and

the layout allows a clear separation of space for up to four crewmembers to discreetly run the yacht. Oyster world rallies and regattas are organized exclusively for owners and their families – truly an unequalled way to see and experience the world. So set sail on the open seas with your own custom Oyster 825. oystermarine.com

Muon Speakers THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, the “White Album”, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. A taste of some of the truly timeless classics that deserve to be heard with ultimate state-of-the-art acoustic technology and innovative, organic design. When music lovers spend countless hours creating the ideal home audio setup, which typically incorporates banks of speakers and complicated cabling, aesthetics are often sacrificed for the sake of sound. For over fifty years, KEF has pioneered speaker audio technology, focusing on achieving natural sound in any location. Ross Lovegrove, KEF’s legendary industrial designer, whose history includes the Sony Walkman and the Apple iMac, found a way to obtain perfect sound without having to compromise on style - the Muon speakers. Carved out of a six-foot solid block of aluminum, and weighing over 250 pounds, each Muon speaker system is individually crafted and carefully tested. The Muon functions beyond the normal range of the sound frequency spectrum, reproducing some sounds too low or high for the human ear to register, but when added to the sound mix offer an enriching effect. The Muon speakers take advantage of KEF acoustic enhancement technology, enabling them to double the available volume through the adsorption of air molecules by activated carbon, performing like speaker units up to two times their size. The 6mm thick damped aluminum shell gives a rigid structure to the unit that keeps any sound-distorting vibrations to an absolute minimum. Lovegrove’s mission of organic essentialism – nothing more, nothing less than you need – is embodied in the Muon. Limited to a production run of only 100 pairs, these magnificent speakers deliver a remarkably clean and open sound in any room. Choose the ultimate soundtrack, turn up the volume and become one with the music listening via your state-of-the-art Muon speakers. kef.com

There is an infiniTe lisT of reasons why we love “The Big Apple”, and one of them is the opportunity to visit fabulous restaurants and of course to be a part of the hip scene, paying a visit to the everchanging list of places to go. Per Se is one of New York’s finest dining establishments that continuously tantalize palates from all over the world.

The magic started back in February 2004 when internationally acclaimed, award winning Chef Thomas Keller - known for the impressive French Laundry in Napa Valley, Bouchon, and Ad Hoc - created a food sanctuary with views of Central Park. Known as an “epic dining event” the experience as well as the service is second-to-none. This group of culinary genius creates two unique nine-course prix fixe menus daily. From this your food journey begins. Savor delicacies like the “Terrine” of Hudson Valley Moulard Duck Foie Gras made with “Dulce de leche” custard, Tsar Imperial Caviar, Avocado Mousse, Pisachio Oil and Brioche Melba, or the Butter Poached Nova Scotia Lobster with Heirloom Cauliflower, Hadley Orchard’s Medjool Dates, Crispy Yogurt and Sweet Carrot “Vierge” and make a toast with a top notch wine like the robust Hugel et Fils, Pinot Gris “Hugel”. When planning your Per Se evening, note that jackets are required. For those who happen to be without, you won’t be the first; they have a selection to choose from. La Palina

Photo: Courtesy of La Palina Cigars / Susan Magrino agency NYC.

A LEGACY OF CRAFT

LA PALINA CIGARS boast an interesting history beginning more than a century ago with a young Ukranian immigrant named Samuel Paley. Sam arrived in Chicago in the late 1800’s and took his first job as a “lector” in a local cigar factory. He got paid to read novels, magazines and newspapers to the crew in charge of rolling the cigars. Steeped in cigar culture, Sam soon became interested in how the tobaccos were mixed and rolled and devoted his spare time to studying the art of cigar making. His effort and knowledge didn’t go unnoticed and soon he was promoted to roller and eventually went on to become a master blender. In 1896 Sam opened the doors to his own cigar shop and factory in Chicago, the Congress Cigar Company. He called his first cigar the La Palina, in honor of his wife Golde Drell Paley. La Palina was his passion and devotion, and Sam was a true artisan who believed in quality and excellence. In 1910 Sam moved his company to Philadelphia, where Sam and his son William worked together and the business continued to flourish. A Wharton Business school graduate, William was interested in the new technology of radio and suggested the company sponsor a radio show in Philadelphia. They called it “The La Palina Hour”. The advertising increased cigar sales considerably and convinced young Paley of the value and potential of radio, leading him in a new direction. Eventually he purchased five radio stations in Philadelphia, which was the inception of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). Ultimately, Congress Cigar was liquidated in 1926, after Sam’s retirement. Generations later, Bill Paley never forgot his roots and decided to revive the all-but-forgotten La Palina brand. Aspiring to the tradition of La Palina of craftsmanship, the modern tobacco blend is still smooth and well rounded, making a cigar of elegance and finesse. The draw is easy, the burn is even, and the construction is flawless. To this day, smoking a La Palina is an unforgettable experience. Lapalinacigars.com

Luxury and exclusivity meet at top speed with the latest trend in automobiles, hypercars. BY DUNCAN MCFARLAND.

ENGINE - THE PERFORMANCE OF THE 8.0L ENGINE IS PEERLESS, PROVIDING OVER 1,000 HORSEPOWER WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE LEVEL OF COMFORT.

MEET THE FASTEST STREET-LEGAL PRODUCTION CAR in the world, clocked at a top speed of almost 270 miles per hour, the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 Super Sport. With gorgeous lines and rare appearances—supposedly only two Veyron models are currently located within the United States—this exceptional car is capturing attention and garnering multiple awards, including being named “Car of the Decade” by the show Top Gear. The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 name honors Pierre Veyron, a Bugatti engineer and test driver; the “EB” refers to Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti, who founded his eponymous company in the Alsace region of France in 1909. In 1998, the Volkswagen Group purchased the Bugatti name to revive the brand, and released the first Veyron in 2005. The 16 cylinder engine features four turbochargers (from which the Veyron derives its numeric surname), and will launch you from zero to 62mph in 2.7 seconds. Equally impressive, the advanced braking system brings you from 62mph to a standstill in even less time, only 2.3 seconds. At speeds over 120mph, the rear wing also functions as an airbrake, quickly rotating to a 55-degree angle in less than half a second after the brakes are first applied. The impressive Veyron specs can be found in every compartment. It has a total of ten radiators, three for the engine alone. The front brake calipers have eight titanium pistons, and the special Michelin

17Equ_Test_Drive.indd 80

run-flat tires run $25,000 per set. And for those who dream of a convertible hypercar, the Grand Sport version features a removable composite roof panel. At 100mph, the windows automatically roll up. At 140mph, the car engages the “handling mode”, and hydraulics lower the car from its normal ground clearance, 4.9 inches, down to only 3.5 inches. The wing and spoiler deploy, holding the car to the road. In order to enable the Veyron to travel at faster speeds up to 253mph, the driver activates a “top speed mode” key before starting the engine. The front diffuser flaps are shut to make the underbody completely level, and the hydraulics lower the car to just 2.6 inches. The spoiler retracts and aligns with the chassis, forming a tearing edge. At any point that the driver applies the brakes, the Veyron switches back to handling mode. Look for the Bugatti SuperVeyron set to debut this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It will feature a 9.6L engine producing 1,600 horsepower, with a planned capability of going 0-60mph in only 1.8 seconds, and a record-shattering top speed of 288mph.

The Lykan Hypersport 2013 is the Arab world’s first high performance luxury car

UNVEILED THIS YEAR AT THE QATAR MOTOR SHOW, the Lykan Hypercar sets a new standard in exclusive supercars. The plan is to build only seven of its kind, each with a price tag around $3.4 million. Hailed as the first supercar manufacturer in the Middle East, W Motors was founded in Lebanon and is now based in Dubai. The company alludes to the Middle Eastern roots of its flagship supercar by incorporating the number seven—which written in Arabic looks like the letter “v”—discretely throughout the car: the roof, the air blades, the rims, and even the lights. The headlights, encased in white gold, are LED lights encrusted with diamonds (or other precious gems, like rubies or sapphires, depending on the color of your car). The leather throughout the car’s interior is gold-stitched, and each of the seven cars has a unique roof plate signed with the number of the vehicle and date of delivery. Technology plays a central role in the Lykan, both inside the car and un-

der the hood. Start the engine with just a gesture through the holographic 3D virtual touch screen, and an innovative, next-generation ID4Motion interactive dashboard. W Motors enlisted the Italian manufacturing experts of Magna Steyr and the performance powerhouse Ruf to provide the muscle behind the Lykan: a twin-turbo, flat-6 Porsche engine with 750 horsepower. An around-the-clock, 24/7 concierge service will be available to every Lykan owner. In addition, as a gift for buying the most exclusive car on the market, each owner will be given a Special Edition Cyrus Klepcys Watch, worth over $200,000. Like the Lykan Hypersport 2013, only seven watches will be produced. As W Motors co-founder and partner Sari El Khalil says, “It is just pure love at first sight. There is no escape.” Mix speed, luxury and exclusivity together and be one of seven owners of this superior motor vehicle.

How did you become internationally involved witH wines?

Luckily, there are too many for me to be able to remember them all. Once I was invited to an elegant manor to evaluate a wine collection. Before I arrived they arrange every single bottle of the collection so that I could judge them all. Everyone present was paying close attention. I started to open a bottle of La Tâche 1966 – one of the finest Burgundy harvests ever. As I opened it, my favorite corkscrew failed, or maybe my skills did, leaving half of a dry and stiff cork inside the bottle! Every guest was in shock. “Lets see what she is going to do now” I overheard the service whisper. I had to keep control, took a deep breath, and to be honest I started to sweat, but the surgical procedure at the end turned out perfectly. We poured and served the wine. It was one of my best experiences (I still have the cork) because the wine was spectacular, full of richness and with a mild hint of mushrooms and truffles. It was very strong with an autumn feel on its taste and maturity. They could have that wine and enjoy it until 2015. The next story I would love to share is to be continued, when I pay my visit to the private cellar of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II which I happen to have an open invitation thanks to Jancis Robinson. Of course, that is if Buckingham Palace allows me to run the story.

The Presidente Hotel in Mexico City opened those doors for me, specifically at the gourmet restaurants and with La Cava Wine Club. While researching for a story on wine in Mexico, I was inspired by The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine and Royal Advisor for Queen Elizabeth II. Nations Cups Galore & George It was a fabulous first weekend in March at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival. Honoring past, present and future powerhouses in show jumping the schedule offered Nations Cups for all levels plus hosted a retirement ceremony for George Morris. Stepping down as Chef d’Equipe but continuing his clinics, Morris is well known for his contributions to the sport and this country. The U.S. show jumping team of Kent Farrington, Reed Kessler, Laura Kraut and Beezie Madden, with Robert Ridland as Chef d’Equipe, earned victory in the inaugural $75,000 Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ presented by G&C Farm, Teams representing seven different countries participated in the evening’s competition, Canada was second and Germany third. Another successful new event, the Hollow Creek Farm FEI Children’s, Junior, and Young Rider Nations Cups, are thanks to the vision, innovation and support of the Andrade Family. With the first round for each age group held during the day session and all three second rounds held at night under the lights, the team from USA won in the young rider’s class and the teams from Brazil won in the junior’s and children’s classes.
