which the brand takes its name: a braided handle harkens a horse’s mane; straps recall bridle halters; the interior lining is the same red as that of a first place rosette, “It’s nice to open your bag and have a bright interior as opposed to black, and on the flip side the red ribbon is the highest level of accomplishment in the sport of Dressage. It adds a nice luxurious feel to the collection, says Charles Chehebar, the brand’s founder and creative director, whose family has been in the handbag industry for more than 30 years. Prior to the inception of the Dressage Collection, the Chehebar family owned the legendary American brand, Ghurka and managed top licenses such as Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld and many more. Handcrafted in a small workshop in Florence, Italy by the most experienced and legendary family of artisans. Each creation in the collection is expertly executed in the finest European leathers. Created with passionate precision and embellished with extraordinary hardware, these exquisitely detailed

pieces are destined to become treasured heirlooms. The Dressage Collection is proud of their alliances with the most discerning Italian production houses. In 1997, sixteen Tuscan firms together created the “100% Italian Consortium” promoting and supporting local production. To this day, they continue the tradition with heartfelt pride. Although the origin of these firms was in Florence, they have since relocated to Scandicci, the most prestigious Italian production district for leather accessories. Mostly family-owned for generations, these firms are distinguished by exclusive leather bags and accessories that are handcrafted utilizing artisanal expertise derived from over 50 years of experience in the sector. Precision crafted from vegetable tanned leather, each handbag has a sleek, structured shape with plenty of organization inside, while feet protect the bottom from scratches and dirt. “Anything we put our name on has to meet the standards of who we are. he Dressage Collection is inspired by the most prestigious and elegant of Equestrian pedigree. The heritage of The Dressage Collection embodies the finest combination of materials and textures expertly crafted with precision and passion. With meticulous attention to detail and artistry, each piece from Dressage Collection represents iconic distinction and refined rhythm which has become the legend of this classic tradition amid style and luxury. Equestrian style aficionados are loving these classic styled bags inspired by dressage, the art and sport of horse training. These detailed leather bridle bags by Dressage are a must-have for the equestrian enthusiast. While some accessory brands slap a harness on a product and call it equestrian, this Luxury handbag line by Dressage prefers to put a little more thought into it. to ensure that everything right down to the stitching is on target,” the creative director says. Dressage creates supple, leather bags featuring hallmark details such as heavy-duty saddle stitching and 18kt. gold plated hardware. One standout silhouette within the Bridle group features handwoven braided leather handles as “a spin-off of the horse bridle that will develop a nice patina over time”, says Chehebar. With Italian naturally shrunken nubuck and pockets accessible from both the exterior and interior. The Bridle group of bags was a huge success, selling out quickly during the Fall’13 season and will be expanded for the upcoming Spring/Summer’14 season. Offering exciting new silhouettes and colors to this iconic group with the now famous braided leather handle, for which has quickly become the brand’s signature detail. As to whom the Dressage customer is, Chehebar offers,” Whether it’s a 30-year-old on Madison Avenue or the elegant women of Palm Beach, we try to not make the collection too fashion-forward. It has an iconic look that gives off a sense of elegance where we can meet those two demographics.” The Dressage Collection philosophy prefers the excellence of quality and unique originality to mere commodity criterion. “We’re not about screaming fashion and repeated logos, we’re for that understated customer who understands and appreciates that they’re carrying

a timeless piece of high quality.” The collection offers ready-made products of refined practicality and uncomplicated elegance. “Each Dressage piece provides a winning blend of function, style, and longevity”, says Chehebar, “It’s something you should enjoy, and be able to pass down to your children and grandchildren. Dressage is targeting highend Luxury boutiques and Saddlery shops with a suggested retail price range of $1,295-$2,895. Sport Blazer

F

ew garments are as versatile and necessary on a gentleman’s wardrobe as a fine sports blazer. Whether you are thinking on a regular day in the office, a business meeting or a weekend in the club surrounded by your friends; this essential piece might become your best ally when looking your best. Despite the cut and length simmilarity of this garment to a regular coat or jacket, the fabrics of this creation make it stand on its own, without

matching it to a set of trousers. The variety of colors, fabrics and patterns for a sport blazer are widely different than the ones use don suits; we can even find some great examples of this blazers on fabrics as versatile and different as corduroy, suede, denim, leather and tweed. The origin of this garment comes from hunters and other casual sports – hence the name- and after a while it became a must have piece, appropiate for formal ocassions and uniforms of prestigious colleges.

One of the greatest assets of having a sport blazer is that no matter the age of the beholder, it always provide a casual and juvenile look without sacrificing elegance and style. Investing on a fine sports blazer is mandatory in order to create the perfect wardrobe. Some of our favorite brands are Scabal, Brioni, Kiton and Tom Ford. QATAR DAZZLES

tHE LONGiNEs GLOBAL CHAMpiONs tOUr FiNAL, DOHA

Doha, nestleD on the Persian Gulf in the world’s richest country, is a city designed to dazzle. The Pearl-Qatar, a multi-billion dollar manmade island, is a lavish Riviera-style community and a yachting hub, with luxury villas, three 5-star hotels, and excellent restaurants, shopping, and entertainment to delight the most discriminating traveler. A stroll along the Doha Corniche, a waterfront promenade along the Doha Bay, is an unforgettable experience, especially during the balmy evenings with the twinkling lights of the city and the bay. This burgeoning metropolis is also becoming a world-class sports venue. With all its vitality and exuberance, Doha was a fitting venue to host the 2013 Longines Global Champions Tour Final for show jumping, the last of twelve competitions that began in Madrid in May 2013 and ended here in November 2013. As we made our way to the competition, we left the expansive city skyline behind and sped past the bay filled with Qatari Dhows, lavish yachts, and cargo ships. Across the water, we caught glimpses of fast-moving jet spray from the F1 speedboats competing in the Grand Prix of Qatar, just one of the high-profile sporting events being held here simultaneously with show jumping. A short drive brought us to Al Shaqab, a stateof-the-art equestrian facility. Large and luxurious, it stands out for its dynamic architectural design. Truly the Al Shaqab’s graceful arches seem to beckon the best horse and rider combinations from around the globe to compete for the Longines GCT top title. Settling in and looking down through the crystal clear glass of the VIP section, we could see the riders, with sharp focus and determination, walking

the challenging course set by designer Ulliano Vezzani. Assured to be a solid test, today the world’s richest show jumping event will be the deciding factor in naming the series leader. With a large sum of prize money and the crowning of a global champion at stake, the buzz in the air was palpable. The Longines triple combination set across the diagonal midway through the course in the first round narrowed the competition. One Brit, Scott Brash, and a group of German riders, Ludger Beerbaum, Marcus Ehning, Gerco Schroder, and Christian Ahlmann, put in superbly ridden and fault-free rounds. Sadly many of the most talented female riders did not fare so well - Luciana Diniz, Laura Kraut, and Edwina Tops-Alexander did not go on to the second round. While the course was being rebuilt for round two, many of the riders who had been knocked out after round one began to trickle into the VIP section, heightening the energy level of the group assembled behind the glass. With renewed intensity, we watched Ehning, Beerbaum, and Brash advance

to the jump off after the second round. With his two solid rounds, before the jump-off even commenced Scott Brash moved into first place to become the youngest ever to top the Longines Global Champions Tour. Then the 28-year-old Olympic Gold Medalist also went on to win the Grand Prix of Doha. When asked how he kept focused for an incredible double win, topping the tour and winning the competition that day, Brash said. “Yes, it was hard to keep concentrating. I wanted to celebrate, but I had a job to do. Looking into the jump off and seeing two of my biggest idols of the sport, Ludger Beerbaum and Marcus Ehning, it spurred me on.” And Brash achieved all this on the day of his 28th birthday. As we left the stadium, seeing familiar faces in this magical and unfamiliar setting, our whirlwind night took on an almost dreamlike quality, luring us to take time to immerse ourselves in this glittering city with so much to see. Full of sophistication and sparkle, Doha has all the ingredients to dazzle and did not disappoint.

TWO ICONS, ONE LEGEND.

PAUL NEWMAN, ACTOR, philanthropist, director and car racer, is an example of how a man and the spirit of a watch can be reconciled so both can be seen as one. Rolex, world-renowned brand, at the end of the 50’s becomes a partner of the American circuit of Daytona International Speedway in Florida and in 1965, the circuit appoints the legendary timer created in 1963, the Daytona Cosmograph, as its official chronometer. The Daytona Paul Newman is just a popular association as there is not a single model that officially holds that name. It was attributed because Newman sported one in the promotional events and publicity photos around the 1969 movie “Winning”. DOUBLE YOUR TRIPLE CROWN PLEASURE

In 2014: Triple Crown of TB Racing & Triple Crown of Grand Prix Show Jumping

Top left: Meredith Michaels Beerbaum & Bella Donna win the 2013 AIG Thermal Million Grand Prix. Top right: Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner (1978), with Steve Cauthen aboard. Bottom left: Duncan McFarlane & Mr. Whoopy were second in the inaugural HITS Million.

T

he term “Triple Crown” originated in mid-19th century England, one of many countries that offer a trio of horse races with the ultimate prize going to the horse that can win all three events. The term made its way to the United States in the early 20th century and has been used to designate the three classic races for thoroughbreds, The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. Known as the ultimate test for a racehorse, winning is not an easy feat; only eleven horses have done so since the first winner in

1919, with the last one being Affirmed in 1978. The term “Triple Crown” has broadened its scope to include the ultimate test of champions in several sports. And 2014 will see the inauguration of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping, a rich series of three million-dollar grand prix events. The horse lover in all of us can enjoy following these high-performing equine athletes and their riders as they try to reach the loftiest pinnacle of their sport. Let’s take a trip down Triple Crown lane racing and jumping style.

hey say that horses have a giving spirit. We believe the same can be said for the equestrian. On Saturday, February 1st, 2014, this spirit was on display as the equestrian community of Wellington jumped to give back.

THE EVENT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING The 2014 FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments® is part of the prestigious FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF) held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. One of the “Saturday Night Lights” series and a highlight of the social season, this unique event occurs the fourth week of the 12-week run that begins in January and comes to a close at the end of March. Founded in 2010 by Mark Bellissimo, CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions and managing partner of Wellington Equestrian Partners, and his daughter Paige, this unparalleled event has distributed almost $6 million to more than 100 Palm Beach County Charities, making it the largest single-day net charitable event in the state of Florida. Every dollar raised is distributed to the charities, with an increasing fundraising target each year. This year, over 400 Palm Beach County charities applied to be part of the event, and 32 were picked in random drawings in the early weeks of the FTI WEF, while two more were chosen as wild cards the night of the event.

RELAY FOR CHARITY An exciting pro-am relay style event, amateur show jumpers have an opportunity to compete side by side with their Olympic and worldclass professional idols. Each of the 34 teams has two junior/amateur riders combined with one professional rider. The equestrian teams are arbitrarily assigned to one of 34 sponsoring equestrian families, each of whom have contributed $25,000 for the sponsorship. Then, in another random grouping, each team/sponsor combination is assigned the charity they are riding for. The winning team’s charity is awarded $150,000 and the

remaining prizes are based on a sliding scale, with every charity guaranteed to win a minimum of $15,000, an amazing windfall for groups struggling to raise money for those in need. In addition to the sponsorships, donations come in from local families, businesses, sponsors, vendors, exhibitors, and spectators (through ticket sales). Palm Beach International Equestrian Center also donates the venue, its staff, and infrastructure to make the event possible.

The Ripple effecT The impact of this one evening spreads throughout the community. And it wouldn’t be possible without the support of all who participate. Everyone involved wins. Dennis Shaughnessy, Former Executive Chairman of the Board of FTI Consulting, title sponsor for the event, commented, “This is the best thing FTI does anywhere in the world. It not only sponsors a great horse event, but it helps thousands of people locally. We are delighted to be able to do it.” Robert and Lisa Lourie of Spy Coast Farm are annual team sponsors. Lisa Lourie remarked, “We have the added benefit of our professional rider [Shane Sweetnam] being a member of the community so it’s extra special for us.” And Robert Lourie explained, “It connects to the community in a good way. They see that it’s not just about us and the horses but it’s about us and the community we are a part of.” The gratitude of the charitable groups lucky enough to be involved is palpable, and the spirit of the evening touches every being from equines to canines to humans. Danny Robertshaw of Danny and Ron’s Rescue said, “This is such a wonderful event. With the help of the FTI GCC we can save more dogs. Last year we adopted 530 dogs here during the horse show circuit. To us it’s so meaningful because we’re approaching our 7,000th adoption. We’re very honored.” Dr. Sandy Munoz, CEO of Children’s Healing Institute, stated in 2013, “We are over the moon. We serve 4,000 families each year and this is huge for us. This is a blessing.” “This is a thrill! We don’t need the lotto -- we just hit it,” explained Jim Brown of Wounded Warriors of South Florida. “We are humbled at the opportunity. We can now provide more immediate financial support for disabled veterans.” Bellissimo summed it up by stating, “The FTI GCC is the signature event of our 12-week season. We measure the success not in dollars raised but in the number of lives touched.” For those in need, fifteen thousand dollars can seem like a distant dream. But on this night in the village of Wellington, dreams do come true. And the giving spirit of the equestrian community gallops on.

SUV`s Choices

Nothing compares to the feeling and rush you can get when travelling around the roads joined by your beloved ones and there is nothing but sky and road ahead of you.

Mercedes-Benz G Class The Eternal Classic

T

here is practically nothing that can disturb the G class; its design and qualities are legendary. With a classic line, an extraordinary off-road aptitude and an amazing luxury inside, the G class by Mercedes Benz offers a hard to find combination of features. Its complete equipment makes the G class really unique. We know that special routes require special qualities and with its powerful engine, permanent all-wheel drive and sequentially activated differentials, the new G class can face any challenge. One of the most rugged vehicles ever produced features full bodyon-frame construction, solid axles front and rear, three differential locks and copious plating underneath to fend off rocks and seven-speed automatic transmission with Touch Shift manual-style shifting. It also has the best multimedia technology that guides drivers to their destination

and offers individual entertainment. For this we believe that the G Class looks after the welfare of its occupants in long travels. The G class has stayed true to itself for over 30 years, thanks to its basic structure, basically indestructible. At the same time, a permanent evolution ensures its leadership. The G class combines, as none of its competitors, apparently incompatible features. On one side, it is a vehicle with an unlimited SUV aptitude. On the other, an exclusive vehicle for the free time with a high level of comfort on the road. Most G class are customized with extra equipment and thanks to its timeless design and edge technology, it will always be able to meet the most demanding wishes. mercedes-benz.com

izarre or beautiful: however you see the BMW X6, it’s a fact that its design turns all the heads, making it one of the most unusual luxury vehicles that will make you stand out in many ways. Considered the first Sport Activity Coupé in the market, the first SUV with a coupé look hit the market in 2008. After a period of only four years, it has become a leader in its segment thanks to its astounding design. This new version will bring new amazing features as: an architecture with great presence of aluminum and ultra-high strength steel with a considerably reduced weight, although it will grow in size. Its design will have a more aggressive and dynamic approach, with a clear intention to be a convenient, elegant, sport yet family alternative. Inside, all the surfaces have good taste combinations of supreme quality fabrics and materials.

It will be powered by BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology, in gas or diesel four or sixcylinder engines and up to 3 turbochargers. There will also be a PHEV model: a plug-in hybrid. All mechanical options will be offered, as the standard 8-gear automatic trans-

mission or, optionally and depending on the version, the smooth 9-gear automatic transmission. The X6 provides all the technology and features you want and some you haven’t thought of yet. bmw.com

The Young & the Talented Part Four

T

he journey I’ve been lucky enough to take with this group of young talent feels like just a mere scratch on the surface of their inspirational equestrian pursuits. To have the chance to spend a season, a show, even a day with each of these twenty-two talented individuals I’ve featured in the last two years would take this dialogue to the next level. Not to mention that there are another twenty or more up and coming competitors that I’m chomping at the bit to contact. All I need is more time. This series started with the Young and the Talented – Part One: Teenagers (April/May 2012) then Part Two: Females Under 30 (June/July 2012) then Part Three: Men Under 30 (Feb./Mar 2013) and now Part Four: More Females on Fire. Since starting this adventure, each talent I’ve talked to has gone on to do great things along their path of pursuing the top. Reed Kessler

made it to the Olympic Team and won the Queen Elizabeth Cup at Spruce, Lucy Davis won on the Global Champions Tour, Katie Dinan won the Alltech Natiional Grand Prix, Shawn Casady is a successful professional touting numerous victories, Brianne Goutal won the American Gold Cup. And truly that is just naming a scant few of the triumphs and only five in the talent pool. Even after twenty-two interviews, each story is unique however each the same – passionate about horse sport, winning and serious in their pursuit of representing their country. They each have that burning desire to be the best. Meet the four fabulous females on fire featured in Part Four of this series. These young women range in age from high school to late twenties, and are competing all over the world this winter, including the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, the Desert Circuit in Thermal and all throughout Europe.

ABIGAIL MCARDLE (USA)

AGE: 19

Age first time on a horse: 6 Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 12 Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: I knew from the second I stepped into the show ring that I wanted to win, and I wanted to be the best that I could. I had always wanted to compete at the grand prix level; it just took some time to finally get there. Age you rode in your first international level grand prix: 3 years ago when I was 16. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2012: Winning individual junior gold for the North American Young Rider Championships. 2012: Winning the $50,000 Hall of Fame classic at the Alltech National Horse Show. 2013: Wins in world ranking classes at Spruce Meadows. Equestrian goals: I would love to be able to represent the United States on a team and hopefully one day in the Olympics. Favorite horse show: I absolutely love showing at Spruce Meadows. The venue is terrific, it is extremely well run, and they pro-

vide excellent prize money every week. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think in recent years the United States has made improvements for the better in terms of bringing along young talent by introducing the Young Rider grand prix series, allowing young rider teams to compete in Europe, and other similar programs. I still think more opportunities should be created for young aspiring professionals to help them move up the ranks. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? I think the new Nations Cup is great because it is really providing many more opportunities for riders to represent their countries. With the simpler format, I am hoping our sport can become more fan orientated. I would love to see the United States stay consistently at the top in the future. I believe a lot of that depends upon the focus in our “pipeline” program to bring up not only young riders but young horses as well.. Name your three top role models: My trainer Katie Monahan Prudent and both of my parents David and Joyce McArdle.

ASHLEE BOND CLARKE (USA)

AGE: 28

Age first time on a horse: Sat on a horse at 6 months, jumped at 3 years old, competed at 6. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 12 in the Children’s Jumpers. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: From a young age I wanted to be a professional rider. I remember in 5th grade thinking that would be my career. I had no idea what it was going to take to get to the top levels, but I knew I wanted to get there. Age you rode in your first international level grand prix: 16 at Young Riders. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: USPGL Rookie of the Year when I was 16 was the first highlight. 2009: 3 consecutive double clear rounds in the Nations Cup - in La Baule, Rome, St. Gallen - a huge accomplishment for my career. Won Warsteiner Grand Prix, 7th in Aachen Grand Prix, Halla Trophy at Aachen for best show jumping horse. 2010: Chronicle Horseman of the Year - that really meant a lot to me.

Degree you did/will complete: I am currently a freshman at the University of Miami. Online social networks: I use Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on everything social. Favorites: Songs: “Let Her Go” - Passenger, “Country Girl” - Luke Bryan. TV show: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Movie/Actor/Actress: “Love Actually.” Food: Bacon!

Equestrian goals: I hope to qualify for the World Cup Finals this year. A riding accident last fall kept me from competing, so my position dropped. But I’m still hopeful. The Olympics has always been a major goal. I’ll be making a big move this year. I was married last October, and with my husband’s support, I will be heading to Europe in April. It’s the place I can really excel. Brussels will be my base. I have a super talented group of horses that I hope can keep me in the top 30. Then I’ll have two years competing at the top before the Games. Eventually, when I have made the best effort I can, I’ll come back to the US and we’ll have a family. Favorite horse show: Aachen- it is the Super Bowl of show jumping. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, with a tremendous fan base. Del Mar National is my favorite in the US – you can’t beat SoCal. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be and why? I would love to have ridden Gem Twist - so much heart, so much scope, freaky careful - horse of a lifetime. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think it has gotten better with Young Rider programs; it’s heading in the right direction. The thing I think everyone comes back to is that it is SO expensive here in the US, and there are not a lot of sponsorships available. In Europe you don’t have to be

wealthy to make a name for yourself. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? I think the US has stepped up its game. Robert Ridland is trying to be fair and forward thinking. For the Nations Cup it’s great to build to the finals with qualifiers here in North America. And in the World Cup Finals, after winning two in a row, we’re still in the game. I’m looking forward to it. Name your three top role models: God is #1 on my list. Richard Spooner - he’s an extremely hard worker. I admire his work ethic and his tenacity - and he knows how to win. Marcus Ehning - he’s brilliant, with a very exact style. Degree you did/will complete: I finished high school and two weeks of college. I’m really not a school person, not a test taker. I’m in the school of life! Online social networks: I have an Ashlee Bond Show Jumping Facebook page, a personal Facebook page, I’m doing more on the farm Facebook page this year, and Twitter. I try to stay connected with fans and friends. Favorites: Songs: “Silhouette” - Avicii, “Hey Brother” - Avicii, “The XX” - Nighttime. TV show: “Iron Chef America” - I love all cooking shows. Movie/Actor/Actress: Wow - that’s hard. “Finding Neverland” is a fav. I love Anthony Hopkins. Food: Anything breaded and sweet! And chocolaty - I eat a low carb diet with a cheat day on Sunday.

LILLIE KEENAN (USA)

AGE: 17

Age first time on a horse: 6 at the Claremont Riding Academy in New York City. Age first time competing in the jumper ring: 12 in the Children’s Jumpers with my first jumper, Chloé. Age you knew you wanted to compete at the grand prix level: When I used to watch Grand Prix classes I thought there was no way I would ever compete in them. The jumps looked too big and the courses looked too technical. When I was 12 and started competing in the low level jumpers I learned how much I enjoyed the division and realized my dream to compete at the highest level was within reach. Age you rode in your first international level grand prix: I competed in my first grand prix class when I was 14 years old. I started competing in the classes consistently when I was 15 years old. Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2010: Champion, Washington International Horse Show Equitation Finals. 2011: Champion, USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals. 2013: North American Young Rider Championships Individual and Team Gold; Winner ASPCA Medal Maclay. Equestrian goals: My short-term goals include working with young horses and making a name for myself in the grand prix classes. My long-term goals include successfully

showing in the highest and most prestigious classes in the world. I want to compete in the Olympic Games, World Equestrian Games, and World Cup Finals. Favorite horse show: My favorite horse show is the National Horse Show. I have had a lot of success at the Kentucky Horse Park starting back in 2007 at Pony Finals all the way through winning Maclay Finals this past year. It is a special horse show for me and it is held at a beautiful venue. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be and why? I would love to have ridden Touch of Class. Although I have never seen her go, I have watched her rounds from the Olympic Games and my mother told me her history. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? I think it does support the development of young talent through the young rider programs. There is a gap between the junior divisions and the professional ranks, but the new programs aimed at developing young professionals will help bridge the gap. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? I think one major component our sport is missing is support from the general public. We need to make our sport more accessible to non-equestrian spectators and to improve the image of show jumping in the public eye. We need to make it a more main-

Top three highlights of your riding years to date: 2011: 2nd place National Rising Star championships at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto and 1st place Blainville Summer Grand Prix with Catwalk 19, 2nd place $25,000 Grand Prix St. Lazare with Lasse. 2013: Winning the Sacramento Grand Prix and the CashCall Futurity Class in Del Mar with Delphine, 3rd place in the $40,000 Grand Prix Del Mar with Dahlia. stream sport, more accessible to both potential participants and spectators. We also need to raise our level of show jumping in America. We have some top American riders but in order to produce the strongest USA team, we need to raise our standard of show jumping at home. There are a few top horse shows in America, but we need more so we do not have to travel to Europe in order to compete at the highest level. It would also improve the overall economy in our sport. Name your three top role models: Andre Dignelli, Patricia Griffith, and my parents, Pam and Howard Keenan. I have to name all four! Degree you did/will complete: I am only a junior in high school so I am just starting to look at colleges. My favorite classes in school are Science and Art History so I might pursue those interests. Online social networks: I have a public Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook Athlete page. I also have private accounts that I limit to my close friends to keep me grounded. ing the opportunity to ride and compete in Europe, gaining experience and knowledge from some of the best in the world, such as Jos Lansink, Jan Tops, and many others; and competing on hundreds of different horses at national and international shows. Equestrian goals: To go as far as possible in the sport and to one day ride on the Canadian team. Favorite horse show: The Royal Winter Fair horse show in Toronto, Canada, because it’s in my hometown, it’s a fantastic, fun atmosphere, with great competition. If you could compete on any horse, who would it be and why? Hickstead. . . in my opinion the greatest horse that ever lived. Do you think the sport of show jumping supports the development of young talent? Yes, I think the Young Rider series is a great division for up-and-coming riders, as well as the EU under-25 Young Rider series. How about the overall state of show jumping in 2013? This is an interesting question. As a Canadian competing in the US and in Europe, I see it from a different angle because I actually spend most of my time outside of Canada. I do have a goal of riding

on Canadian teams, so as I plan my competitions I need to consider what I should do to be recognized for such events. I think Nations Cups are very exciting and motivating. Many riders make it a goal to ride for their country in Nations Cup events because it gives them more of a chance to make it on the team in the Olympics, Pan Ams, or World Equestrian Games. Even though Canada has fewer riders and horses at the top level than the US, they always seem to shine when it matters. It would be fantastic to see Canada win at the World Cup finals! Name your three top role models: Beyoncé, Penelope Leprevost, Laura Kraut. Degree you did/will complete: Business and Psychology. Online social networks: Facebook, getting to know Twitter. Favorites: Songs: Just downloaded “Hold On, We’re Going Home” - Drake, “Katy on a Mission” - Katy B, “Rap God” - Eminem. TV show: “Modern Family.” Movie/Actor/ Actress: Leonardo Dicaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Kira Knightly. Food: Chocolate, red velvet cupcakes, great salads, Italian food.

La Normandie Accueille le Monde!

“These riders are noT coming To compete; they’re coming to make a place in history,” states Fabien Grobon, CEO of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy. “The games will be a global event that combines passion, performance, sport and culture.” Grobon brings years of experience in the running of a major sporting event to his post. For ten years he was the director of various aspects of the Roland Garros, the French Grand Slam tournament known to the rest of the world as the French Open. The 2014 World Equestrian Games are coming to Caen, Normandy in August, a region familiar to most Americans as the site where US troops stormed the beaches in World War II. Grobon explains that Normandy was chosen as the site of the games in part because of the area’s storied relationship with the horse. With its well-developed breeding industry and a population of well over two million riders, Normandy is truly the “land of the horse,” rich in equine history and culture. This, the largest equestrian event ever organized

in France and in the world, “It will be on great big celebration for horse lovers in the heart of France’s horse country - Normandy. A wonderful story will unfold, from top-level equestrian sport to equine culture in all its many facets.” Grobon is passionate about all aspects of the games, but in part his vision is to expose visitors to the region’s history, food, culture, and landscapes, as well as its welcoming people. In discussing the games, the word “welcome” is utilized frequently. Not only welcoming the horse-loving public, but also providing an atmosphere of top sport and tranquility in which the athletes can give their best performances, and the spectators can enjoy them, is high on the CEO’s list of priorities. Grobon and his staff have secured partnerships with hotels and inns so that the games will be accessible to everyone; plus, they have set ticket prices at a reasonable rate – again to welcome all who wish to attend. When asked what major projects he and his team have dealt with, he said, “We have been involved in

creating a collective movement. Everyone is mobilized so that the overall organization and public services are up to the standard necessary for sporting competitions: local territorial authorities, federations, and the Organizing Committee staff are all working hand in hand.” But, he points out, “As you can imagine with a project of this size and duration, the toughest part is still to come! We will need to remain both vigilant and creative to the very end.” As the games draw nearer, the pace is accelerating, the workload intensifying, and the staff will double in size. The hope is that when it is all over, everyone involved will look back and see the experience as a magnificent human (and equine) adventure filled with unforgettable moments of sport and celebration. Dr. Pearse Lyons of Alltech, the title sponsor of the 2010 games in Kentucky, said after talking with Fabien “I can tell you, it took me 10 seconds to agree to be the title sponsor of Normandy’s Games!” Let the games begin.

Mezcal

The exotic and alluring spirit. Por Edel Schaub Moss, Certified Sommelier.

M

y first introduction to mezcal happened about nine years ago, while working as a sommelier at a luxurious hotel in Mexico City. Mezcal was not even in our spirits list, and we only had one green worm-shaped crystal bottle in the bar. It had two antennae, two legs, a smiling face as an opener and a simple tag around its neck labeled ÐUncle’s Pablo Reserve”. This spirit was demanded in very rare occasions, I must admit, as guests usually requested tequila. Mezcal was really considered an ordinary drink, something tasteless for rustic males. Throughout the years, mezcalerías started appearing in Mexicós city nobby neighborhoods, like Condesa and Roma. At this mezcalerías, conducted tastings –full of mysticism– were being offered by mezcal experts and consumers were taught how to enjoy and appreciate this ancient distillate and gently learned the difference between tequila and mezcal. Mezcal is a spirit made by artisans. A legacy of a family from generation to generation.

The enigmatic spirit had for years been overshadowed by tequila. Today mezcal shows its refinement, reputation and authenticity with the most sophisticated bottles in the market, some in the form of medicinal potion, some other with handmade tags finely fabricated from the leaves of agave, some other with names particularly evoking; shamans or soul-loser come to mind. There is a wide variety of mezcal bottles autographed by their distilling masters, also unique spirit bottles numbered by limited production that identiiesy the savoir faire of precious mezcal, the most cosmopolitan drink of all times. Mezcal is a rare spirit, and has its appellation of origin since 2005 with only 30 kinds of agave allowed to be used for limited production, and where varieties are often wild. The regulations allow only the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas and Michoacán to produce mezcal. Here is some of the best mezcal that you must try and keep in your bar. Enjoy!

ersatile, edgy, untimely, unique. Enjoying this mezcal is like navigating a river of many sensations. The tobaziche is an exotic w ild agave. Pierde Almas requires patienwild ce, concentration, intellect and fascination. It has a fresh bouquet, with herbal and citrusy notes of pure agave, peppermint, anise, boiled corn, pine sticks and a distinct bouquet of burning wood and smoked meat. A persistent and perfumed aftertaste. Enjoy it to the fullest with my favorite cigar, Padrón 1964 Diplomático.

his brand evokes all the wisdom of the master distiller. Also the purity and thoroughness production which is limited to 396 bottles. The fresh herbal bouquet with anise notes becomes more complex due to the scents of smoky bark, wood, palm mat, and charcoal, contrasting with sweet scents of wildflowers, citrus honey and quince jelly. Delicious!

hat a sophisticated and complex mezcal! It offers a fragrant and sublime feeling. In addition to agave, delicate notes evoke sand, stone, earth, and wood oven, nuanced with herbal hints of citrus, anise, cinnamon, peppermint, chamomile, all combined with honey, brown sugar, rose petals, violet, quince and fig. Just beautiful!

GRACE, GLAMOUR & GIVING THE 69th ANNUAL PIN OAK CHARITY HORSE SHOW

Top: Marteen van der Hooven & Southbound.

T

hose who love the equestrian lifestyle are invited to Houston for two weeks in March to share the gala celebration of the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, now in its 69th year. From March 19-30th, guests and competitors will bask in the Texas sunshine, enjoy high-level competition and relish in all the glittering events.

A TEXAS TRADITION FOR OVER 50 YEARS Spearheaded at its inception by J. S. Abercrombie, the show debuted in 1945 at his Pin Oak Stables, with the proceeds given to charity. This annual event quickly became the social event of the season, with tickets more difficult to acquire than Kentucky Derby tickets. Several years later, Pin Oak began a long-term commitment to raise funds to construct and support Texas Children’s Hospital, which, with their help, opened in 1954. Over the next three decades, “Mr. Jim” Abercrombie, with the help of Leopold Meyer, the Junior League, and a group of dedicated Houstonians, established Pin Oak as one of the preeminent horse shows in the nation. Now one of the oldest and most prestigious horse shows in America, Pin Oak

has also become one of Houston’s most unique social events, raising millions of dollars for the hospital, its Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance.

COME FOR THE COMPETITION Pin Oak Week I features a multi-breed show, one of the few in the nation, featuring American Saddlebreds, the ‘Peacocks of the Show Ring;’ the ancient Andalusian/Lusitano, with riders in full costume; Welsh Ponies; Roadster Horses; and of course, the Hunters and Jumpers. The highlight of the week will be the $30,000 Grand Prix, and the Breed Championship Finals on Saturday. Pin Oak Week II will have Hunters and Jumpers in all rings, culminating with the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Friday evening, and a second $30,000 Grand Prix on Saturday evening.

COME FOR THE SOCIAL BENEFITS Accompanying these highlights will be elegant ringside galas that have become legendary for their glamour. Well-dressed spectators will enjoy champagne and red carpet hospitality at its best. The

gala on the night of the Hunter Derby will include a lighthearted “Hatter Derby” competition, in which the most stunning hat will be selected, and the wearer will be treated to a magnum of Moet & Chandon champagne. For the exhibitors, hospitality venues are provided throughout the show grounds, from Exhibitor Breakfasts to Ringside Receptions. And for the equine athletes, baskets of carrots are available at each show ring! Grooms, the unsung heroes of any show team, are treated to a Grooms’ Reception as well.

Come and Be a Part of the Pin oak family For the people of Houston Pin Oak is a major event built around charitable efforts and the beautiful equine; truly a great source of pride. Texas Children’s Hospital, the largest pediatric medical institution in the world, is a tangible tribute to the philanthropic efforts of all those involved with the show over its 69 years. With its efforts on behalf of seriously ill children and their families, the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show is making a global impact for good. Says Board Member and Sponsor Rick Terry, “Sponsoring the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show has been a wonderful experience and a great investment for any corporation. The show attracts an affluent audience and a tight-knit community of participants, all passionate about this sport. I am proud to be a member of The Pin Oak Family.”

excellence and for that reason, we introduce here an asset that emerges like no other at the sea. The Princess 98 Yacht is undoubtedly one of the most important achievements, not only in terms of design, but for all it encloses in its 30-meter long hull with a unique combination of the latest technology, traditional craftsmanship and the Princess style. The vast flybridge offers huge scope for customization and is the perfect exterior area for hosting your guests. There’s plenty of space for freestanding furniture or an optional spa

bath, plus room to store your tender, complete with crane. This enables you to house a jet ski in the large transom garage, and combined with the electro-hydraulic bathing platform, means she’s well equipped for guests who enjoy water sports. The interior is well equipped and finished with the highest standards. The panoramic windows light the living and dining rooms: they are bright and open with views from all positions. The accommodation can be configured for eight to ten persons –with up to six crew– in different loca-

tions, to offer a wide variety of configurations. The 98 Motor Yacht occupies the highest range of the luxury cruises built by the shipyard of Plymouth, part of the Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group. As with nobility, being part of the LVMH group is a serious commitment, so nobody should be surprised that any model of the Princess yatchs is taken to the limit in design, robustness and equipment. And the 98 Motor Yacht, the highest in its class, is definitely not an exception. princessyachts.com

Padrón Cigars Box 40TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION.

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, PADRÓN cigars has been leader among thebest cigars tastings. These pure Nicaraguan cigars of Cuban seed are well known in the most outstanding media of the United States. Because of its delicacy, the whole series of Padrón cigars have always meant a big challenge for expert editors because the brand is continuously imposed between the lists of the best cigars in the world. The Padrón family has a beautiful story. All family members have been involved in the industry since the eighteenth century. Damaso Padrón, the patriarch, was born in the Canary Islands. Later he immigrated to Pinar de Rio, the most fertile region of Cuba. There, with his children, he began working in the tobacco industry where he likewise made a promise: to produce the best possible snuff. This commitment to produce the best, is a tradition that persists from generation to generation and reflects the firm determination that

professes today. José Orlando Padrón, who is the grandson of Damaso, like his grandfather, also had to leave their homeland. José Orlando immigrated to the United States about the year 1961 without reaching any good, only what he had learned in Cuba, work ethic, commitment to quality and adherence to the responsibility to uphold the family traditions. In 1964 Padrón Cigars was founded in Little Havana neighborhood, a section of Miami populated by Cubans in exile. Even with humble beginnings, José Orlando always focused on producing quality. He knew that the Cuban community missed Cuba, so he set the objective that the exiles would not be without snuff. At first, the company only had two employees, a cigar roller who manufactured cigars all day, and its owner, José Orlando, who used to sell the day’s production in places frequented by exiles during the night. Today much of this has changed but much has prevailed. Today the firm has over 600 employees who work in the tobacco

fields from Nicaragua and Honduras, and headquarters still prevail on the premises of Little Havana, where it all began in 1964. The company remains family owned where five children led by José Orlando represent the new generation to continue the family legacy . Like all family celebrations driven by deep traditions, in 2004 the Padrón family celebrated its 40th anniversary bringing to market the best cigar ever produced: Padrón Serie 1926, 40th Anniversary. This cigar was selected in the first place among the best 25 cigars of 2004! Accompanying this delightful cigar also a beautiful cedar box carved and hand painted was produced. Currently this case is still available on request at a price of 1652 dollars (only used as a complement to the cigars and not a humidor). In September 2014 will be the 50th anniversary of the firm, where a huge celebration is expected and the production of a beautiful cigar as well. padron.com

Polo Pleasure On Sunday, January 5th, thousands of fans gathered at the International Polo Club in Wellington for the opening of the 2014 Polo Season. Glam all the way around – this is the spot for Palm Beach fashion and splendid food. Relish in activities that can only be found at a polo match, from the traditional champagne-in-hand stomping of divots to the thrilling athleticism of the players and their ponies, and of course some incredible eye candy. High-goalers Nacho Figueras, the face of Ralph Lauren, or Nic Roldan, the face of Piaget, amongst others can be seen throughout the season. Both Figueras and Roldan have helped organize matches that contribute to good causes, and both lend their high-profile images to fundraisers. Figueras, likes the mix. “I see polo as a bridge between the classes. Look at me: I’m a middle-class kid from Argentina who plays with Prince Harry. So to me, polo is exactly what people don’t think it is: this perfect salad of class and race and women and kids and animals. It’s a fusion of things, no?” Come enjoy the fun-filled fusion and tremendous high-goal excitement in Wellington for the next three months. internationalpoloclub.com

Four years ago, the North American Riders Group began an initiative to rank the top horse shows and tournaments in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Each show is evaluated on key aspects, from the footing of the arenas to the quality of the stabling, venue and much more. It is the ‘Competitors, Owners & Trainers’ Report, a guide to the best show jumping in North America. Many events have made remarkable improvements in the last four years. Pictured here are a few of the best in 2013. This is top notch show jumping, so if watching talented equestrians, men and women, compete over sizable obstacles against the clock in a beautiful setting sounds enticing, put one or more of these events on your bucket list. In 2013 the top 5 include: Spruce Meadows: Calgary, AB, Thunderbird Show Park: Langley, BC, The American Gold Cup: North Salem, NY, The Royal Winter Fair: Toronto, ON, and Alltech National Horse Show: Lexington, KY. NARG also honors unique one-day events such as The New Albany Classic: New Albany, OH and The American Invitational: Tampa, FL. narg.org
