BACKGROUND Employment Options Trading As ‘Youth Options’ is a Public Benevolent Institution, with a mission to help vulnerable and disadvantaged people to access the employment, education or training they need to achieve their life goals.

We have provided youth services with funding from the Commonwealth and SA State Governments since 1989, delivering assistance including case management, mentoring and coaching, career development support, training, life skills programs, work experience, and job search advice and support to disengaged and at-risk young people.

In 2016, Youth Options opened Youth Space East and Youth Space West sites. These experiential learning centres were for young people who face challenges with mainstream schooling. Our Youth Space sites provided programs of project participation, case management and mentoring, and career development/pre-employment skills development. The centre’s core value is to let the young person’s interest drive the kinds of projects which they select to work on/in. The centre philosophy is based on the concept of co-production, where young people are not just ‘participants’ but are equal partners and co-creators of their experience at the centre. In 2018, our organisation amalgamated our individual sites to a central city location for easier access for participants and service delivery.

We assist disadvantaged people to plan and achieve employment and education goals as we believe that access to sustainable employment is the most critical factor in people being able to achieve their life goals and successfully contribute to society. People who don’t have school or post-school qualifications have disproportionately high rates of joblessness and employment which is erratic, homelessness, family disruption, and social exclusion. We seek to address this through approaches including experiential learning programs; foundation skills; career services; mentoring; case management and individual support.

POSITION OBJECTIVE This work placement role involves working with Youth Space students under supervision in an experiential learning environment with the aim of re-engaging students with education and learning.

Specific Duties and Accountabilities     

  



Work under supervision of Placement Coordinator and Youth Space Case Managers Inspire students to create projects that capture their interest, providing feedback on accomplishments Help students’ problem solve and overcome obstacles as they work on their projects Model and encourage appropriate behaviour standards and build positive relationships with students Assist in the running of experiential based student programs (e.g. cooking, music, workshop, etc) Assist in the maintenance of student files Raise concerns about student welfare or other issues with the Youth Space team Provide additional support to other areas of Youth Options as needed (e.g. provide coverage for reception when required) Ensure health and safety procedures are followed at all times

Selection Criteria Qualifications Essential    

Working with Children Check Disability Services Employment Screening Check OR NDIS Worker Check Having or being willing to undertake prior to employment the Reporting Abuse and Neglect in an Educational Care setting (RRHAN-EC) training South Australian ‘C’ class drivers’ licence

Experience: Essential:  Proficient use of Microsoft applications.

Highly Desirable:  Previous experience in youth or disability related work.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE REQUIREMENTS Essential:  Ability to build positive working relationships and to engage with young people  Ability to adapt in busy learning environment to provide support to the Youth Space team as needed  Demonstrate initiative and willingness to learn  Ability to maintain confidentiality  Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, plan and organise workloads, follow through and complete tasks to achieve specific goals  Ability to work sensitively and respectfully with people with cultural and linguistic diversity (CALD)  Be innovative and creative with a willingness to share practical skills and work experientially with students under supervision  Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting young people’s engagement with and participation in learning and employment

Highly Desirable:  Knowledge of secondary education and curriculum, including SACE and FLO  Understanding of current labour market and employment barriers and opportunities for young people.

The NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.

POSITION OBJECTIVE This work placement role works within our NDIS programs to provide support in developing new and existing procedures for Youth Options NDIS team as well as opportunity to work our NDIS participants under supervision to assist them to achieve their goals.

Specific Duties and Accountabilities        

Work under supervision of NDIS Coordinator Conduct quality audits of existing databases and client files Create and/or review NDIS specific procedures and policies Assist NDIS Coordinator in supervision of NDIS Team Meetings Assist in group and one on one sessions with NDIS Participants under supervision Work with NDIS participants under supervision to build capacity to achieve goals and provide feedback on their accomplishments Utilise Youth Options NDIS Practice Framework to support NDIS Participants to reflect on their learning Role model appropriate and respectful behaviour for Youth Options clients at all times


