From the Publisher’s Notebook What’s wrong with this country? Half the people seem nuts. A lot of them have no respect for the flag or the freedom they enjoy. Men want to use the ladies room, ladies want to use the men’s room… People want everything for free. The want to let everyone into our country and give them places to live and food to eat when we have American-born U.S. citizens that don’t have that. Is this like “The Fall of the Roman Empire”? Eight Movies To See Before You Die (Maybe) Okay maybe the title is a little drive in cruising, “parking” to make mer nights were. It’s packed with a over-dramatic but these are good out, car club gangs, going off to cast of great actors some of whom movies several of which you may college, chasing your high school became big stars. The list includes never even heard. Realize these are my picks not some movie critic, director, actor or movie “film expert”. I believe only two or three of them received any kind of critical recognition. However, I feel they are all entertaining and two convey key times in American history in a very nostalgic way. So again these are my picks and I “am solely responsible for their content” as they say. I hope you decide to check some or all of these out if you haven’t seen them. If you have, re-watch them. So here they are in alphabetical order. 1. American Graffiti is George Lucas’ “cultural touchstone” movie set in the early 1960’s. It all takes place in one night in a California town and involves drag racing,

sweetheart, and chasing a mystery dream girl - just to name a few. I watched it as a teen in the 70’s and I envisioned the 60’s as that cool. It was what we all wished our sum-

deserved), Richard Dreyfuss, and several others notable actors. Harrison Ford even has a small role as a semi bad guy while Suzanne Somers has a cameo but pivotal role. If the early ‘60s weren’t that cool they should have been. Look for the name of the first film Lucas directed on the license plate of one of the main car characters in the movie. 2. “Better Off Dead” is a hilarious but sometimes slightly dark comedy starring John Cusack. However, many people will tell you they’ve never even heard of it. If you start laughing when someone intones, “Two dollars. I want my two dollars” you’ve seen this movie. It has a great supporting role is filled by Curtis Armstrong of Risky Business ‘Moonlighting’ and the “Revenge of the Nerds” films. Some people may

find this movie disturbing as it has comical elements about Cusack’s character Lane Meyer attempting to commit suicide. Look for when Lane is accidentally pushed off an overpass into a garbage truck. There’s a classic line there. Watch through the credits for the line at the end, which is used in a far more famous movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. 3. “Born Free” is the story of a couple who raise an orphaned lion cub at a national park in Kenya Africa. Eventually they have to teach her to survive in the wild and release her. This is a great movie. If it doesn’t get you all misty-eyed at some point you have no feeling. However, it does have a happy ending. Hey there’s no cursing, senseless violence, has a great plot and is actually based on not “inspired by” a true story. I saw it as a kid at a drive in with my parents and brother. It’s a lifetime memory. This is an enjoyable movie for adults and children. 4. “Bullitt” Hey it’s got the ‘King of Cool” Steve McQueen in a turtleneck wearing a shoulder holster driving a Mustang. Although a little short on plot the famous car chase with Bullion’s Mustang and the Dodge Charger on the streets of San Francisco makes the movie. Some say the cars are also stars and I’d definitely agree. While the chase may seem tame compared to the unrealistic often computer generated car chase sequences of today’s movies this one is fairly realistic or at least believable. The cast includes another ‘60s cool icon Robert Vaughn (the Man From U.N.C.L.E.) and Jacqueline Bisset. The car chase alone is worth the “price of admission”. 5. “Marathon Man” Dustin Hoffman does a great job in this movie of unknowingly bringing down a World War II Nazi war criminal, Dr. Christian Szell, played by Sir Laurence Olivier. However his brother played by Roy Scheider, is killed by Szell while Hoffman’s character Thomas “Babe” Levy is tortured by Szell in a diabolical but appropriate for the character way. Scheider, I think is a great actor and is the star in another movie on this list. Szell seems to be a very

Joseph Mengele type character and Robert Devane as Janeway the shadowy government agent and Marthe Keller as Elsa, Babe’s girlfriend, provide some twists and betrayals. It will keep you involved.

soundtrack is done by Tangerine Dream, who did notable music on “Risky Business”, “Thief”, “Firestarter” and a song on “Visionquest”. Some critics have lauded it as an “overlooked masterpiece”. The first few minutes set the tone and then you will be hooked. 7. “Sorcerer” This film stars Roy Scheider and a cast of people who were and are pretty much unknown. However, this is still a really good movie. Scheider plays Jackie Scanlon a mobster on the run from the mob. He’s hiding out in a South American country with several others who are hiding out for various reasons. An oil well fire prompts an offer of money and citizenship that Scanlon and some of the others can’t refuse. They sign on to haul unstable dynamite through the jungle , over mountain passes, swollen rivers, collapsing bridges and other hazards and hurdles to deliver the dynamite to be used to extinguish the fire. It’s a suspenseful journey. When I saw it at the movie theater a friend of mine had to be literally pulled back down into his seat. He was that into it. Once you start watching it it’s like a train wreck. You can’t look away .The films very fitting ENIGMA

test piloting and astronaut training when huge computers had less capability than our phones do now. There’s plenty of drama as sometimes the test pilots don’t make it home due to crashes and even the training for the space missions can have deadly consequences. Arthur Knight writing for The Hollywood Reporter said, “Rarely has a film made a historic accomplishment seem so vivid and personal.” and “It makes you wonder quite suddenly why there aren’t more movies like this.” Start watching it and you’ll get hooked. It’s a really good movie and I don’t say that often. So there my eight picks of what I feel are overlooked or even mostly forgotten movies that are really worth watching. I could have listed more but am bound by space constraints. I hope you will check some or all of these out. They are primarily just good entertainment movies, and isn’t that what movies are for?

had “been there all day.” [Sounds like someone had the Double Bacon Smokehouse Burger.] A patrolman reported encountering Brody Young, 25, in the bathroom. Young was “erratic and doing jumping jacks and hitting the wall,” reported the cop, who noted a strong chemical odor in the bathroom, evidence that the intoxicated Young had likely been huffing. Deemed a “danger to himself and others,” Young was taken into custody and charged with several misdemeanors. He has been barred from entering the McDonald’s.

The teen was in his driveway about 2:45 p.m. when the robber approached him with a folding pocket knife, police said in a statement. The robber then fled through neighboring yards after getting a face full of water. Police said he was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, black gloves and dark colored long shorts or pants. He is white, about 5-foot-10 with a medium build, in his early 20s, and has a freshly power washed face.

few, some seekers of expanded consciousness are turning to a more natural means. A much more natural means. Wildlife officials in Arizona said toads are being stolen from a conservation area and the thieves are believed to be planning to lick them. The Spur Cross Conservation Area’s official Facebook page posted footage showing multiple people taking Sonoran desert toads late at night. The post said the case has been turned over to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to seek charges including violation of the park’s posted hours and vandal-

ism. Randy Babb, an Arizona Game and Fish wildlife biologist, said the thieves were likely planning to lick the toads, a practice that induces hallucinogenic effects similar to DMT. “Sonoran desert toads are the toads of choice and they harvest the poison from the and then ingest it,” Babb said. “They’re the largest toad in the Southwest. They can reach sizes of more than 2 pounds and can live up to 20 years.” A Massachusetts man was arrested at a New Hampshire Planet Fitness after he did naked yoga on the public gym floor. When police apprehended 34-year-old Eric Stagno, he reportedly told them he thought the health club was a “judgement free zone,” referring to the gym franchise’s marketing slogan. Stagno was allegedly naked when he used the gym’s yoga mats. [Aren’t those mats gross enough?] “The story we got from witnesses was that the guy walked in, stripped down right there in front, left the clothes and belongings at the front desk, walked back and forth across the gym a couple of times and then settled in over at

the yoga mats,” Plaistow police Capt. Brett Morgan told the New Hampshire Union-Leader. Morgan told WBZ-TV that gymgoers who witnessed Stagno nude routine said they felt “disgusted,” “sick” and “unsafe.” Stagno was released on a $1,000 bail. A Michigan village inaugurated its fourth-ever mayor to paw-ffice: A local cat named Sweet Tart. The Village of Omena voted the 9-yearold feline, who previously served as the village’s vice mayor, into office in an election that featured votes being cast via $1 donations that went to the local historical society. “While I’m home schooled, I graduated first in my class!” Sweet Tart’s campaign profile boasted. Officials said there were a record number of votes in the election, which featured a variety of animal candidates. The village has had an animal mayor for more than a decade. There were about 7,000 votes cast, including several online. Sweet Tart’s opponents in the race, which included 13 dogs, a peacock, a goat, a chicken and another cat, were all awarded positions on the village council.

True Confessions of a Doorman With the innate ability to strike the fear of God into someone with a glace, he oversees your fun a frivolity making sure you and your friends are safe. But if you or your friends get out of line or worse, he’s the front line of defense. Of course I’m talking about a doorman or club bouncer. Some may even refer to them as a warden at an insane asylum, whose actions are even glorified in song and film. Who are these mythical creatures that act as a gatekeeper to our favorite restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and convert halls?

The prospect of having a doorman or “gatekeeper” goes back to ancient times and some say is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible in Chronicles where gatekeepers

they were dancing with.

What we are more accustomed to as what a doorman or bouncer does goes back to post-Civil War with expansion west and expansion of bars and brothels. Madames would hire “muscle” to literally throw out troublesome deadbeat and drunk patrons. Pre-World War I bouncers were employed to keep the morality at dance halls. If a patron got too close to a dancer they would intervene and remind the patron to keep at least nine inches between themselves and who

Over the years anyone who has ever stepped foot in one of their favorite venues has has interacted with a doorman or bouncer. Often they can set the tone for the evening with a warm welcome as they makes sure you are of age and not attempting to break the law entering the club (already intoxicated or carrying a firearm) or once you enter making sure everyone is being civil. Over time many of us have befriended a doorman or even consider them part of our

“I just kind of fell into it,” says once bouncer. It wasn’t his initial career choice. This particular doorman was playing guitar in a band when one nigh while hanging out friends drinking beer things got out of hand at the bar and he jumped in to help out. “I grabbed somebody and threw them out and they offered me a job,” he recalls.

As a doorman our bouncer has seen countless faces but also has met a celebrity or two. One year during Riverbend when the band Everclear played they came into where he worked and Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens asked him to babysit his Gibson Jumbo after he had performed a show next door. “That was a real honor,” he recalls.

That was over 20 years ago. While it wasn’t initially a career choice, it’s become something he’s well-known. Watching him interact with patrons as they come and go his establishment he’s almost like a party host as everyone is happy to see him when they enter and for the most part with very few exceptions don’t listen to him when he has to intervene in a situation. Standing well over six feet tall with a menacing build

Our bouncer even has had movie celebrities in the house. Robert Pattinson of “Twilight” fame was in town to film “Water For Elephants” when the production company rented half of the club out for a party. “I told him if things ended up too crazy give me the nod and we’ll take you out the back door – which is what we did,” he says. He snuck Pattison out the back door to an awaiting

their guidelines that can be anything from already being intoxicated upon arrival, starting an altercation once in, and not abiding by dress standards as stated by the club before entrance and in rare cases once inside. “I always have a ‘hi’ and a smile for everybody,” my bouncer friend says. If the person doesn’t respond he will repeat his greeting. More often than not they will respond to the bouncer, however sometimes not. “I usually tell them if you can’t speak to someone nicely coming through the door, I pretty much don’t want you in here.” Checking I.D.s has become an art for our bouncer over the years. Many clubs have even installed an I.D. scanner to verify is a driver’s license is real. Our bouncer says what he sees is more I.D. swapping where someone will come in then leave and maybe 15 or 20 minutes later someone else will come in trying to use the same I.D. “I actually caught one the other week and the father knew and I kept the I.D. He was furious,” he recalls. “I said, so you’re helping get your daughter in a 21 and up club? Are you contributing to a minor? I told him we’re not giving the I.D. back, that’s basically criminal impersonation.” He notes the girl could have gone to jail for it. That doesn’t mean he still doesn’t get the occasional fake I.D. Our bouncer chuckles as he recalls one of the worst fake handed to him. It was made out of the front of a Kmart card and they didn’t bother to scan the back of the card. The date of birth had been changed on the front but was missing the stick-

Over his 20-plus years working on the door, our bouncer has seen a change in the crowds that come out. “I’m scared for everybody in today’s society,” he says. He’s seen a lot more gang-related dress coming into the clubs and fears they may be packing. He’s also seen a lot of white kids packing as well. “We try to stop all that at the door. Did the Establisment Set Up The Alternative Media? If someone wants to find out about what is going on in the world, they might end up looking towards the alternative media. This can be seen as the only news source that does what it is supposed to do - to report on what is actually going on. It might then be accurate to say that this person likes to think for themselves, which is why they don’t pay attention to the mainstream media. They are not going to be interested in being a

curious person.

If they didn’t have the need to find out about what is actually going on, there would be no reason for them to look towards this source. Instead, they could just sit in front of a TV or read a paper.

Now, this doesn’t mean that they will accept everything the alternative media comes out with, but they might be happy to accept most of it. So, while they will need to examine everything the mainstream media tells them, this won’t be In their eyes, this could be seen the case with this source of as what someone would do if information. they were happy to be programmed by the system. And, due to where they get their information from, they may believe that they are one of the few people on this planet who know what is going on. This may cause them to experience a sense of superiority, or to believe that they are more awake than others. Yet, if they believe that the mainstream media is full of lies and the alternative media is full of truth, this is to be expected. This doesn’t mean that they will have a superiority complex though, as this might not have an impact on every part of their life.

that they are more informed than others, it doesn’t mean that they won’t try to pass this information on. Even so, they could be used to having this information thrown back in their face. When this happens, it can be seen as a sign that most people are too closed-minded to embrace new information. Thus, not only will someone

like this be unaware of what is going on, they will be too closed-minded to find out. This kind of behaviour can end up supporting their belief that they are in the know and that a lot of people are reluctant to think for themselves. The problem here is that while one can believe that they are aware of what is going on, they might only know what the establishment wants them to know.

Unlike her, however I can’t sing each song word for word – except the Tom Petty cover they did (“Don’t Do Me Like That”). There are many reasons the Bacon Brothers are a good show. Besides being talented musicians, Both Kevin and Michael engaged in entertaining banter with the crowd. And to Kevin’s benefit it did not use it to promote his movie career. I have to admit I was a little skeptical the first time I saw the show as I expected something out of Bruce Willis’ The Return of Bruno or

You bet, but it was his brother and the rest of the band that won me over. Plus the show is a lot of fun. In a way it’s like a frat party except the music is original with the exception of the Petty cover and a cover of The Rascals “People Got To Be Free” and many of the songs have funny anecdotes shared by both Kevin and Michael. One of the songs, “Tom Petty T-Shirt” prompted a fan to toss a Tom Petty t-shirt to Michael. Obviously not their first show on the tour either. Songs like “36

I felt bad for Fry who was on top of his game as I watched kids pack up their belongings and start to trickle out. Fry deserved a better fate than that. Belinda Carlisle performed before ABC and she played a set of solo singles and from the Go Gos catalog that were easily recognizable and easy to sing along to. Sitting there I forgot how many singles she had as a solo artist. I was already well versed on all the Go Gos catalog, but forgot (but immediately remembered) some of her solo work. Her set consisted of nine songs and equally represented her solo work and with the band starting with “Mad About You” and finishing with “Heaven Is A Place on Earth”. Sandwiched in between were Go Gos classics like “Vacation” and “Our Lips Are Sealed”. All songs were highly recognizable with no obscure songs performed. Carlisle sashayed across the stage during her set in much as you would expect and hope if you’ve ever seen any of her music videos and on the eve of a big birthday (she’ll be 60 in August) she looked amazing and enjoyed the crowd singing along with every song as she played the tambourine.

I saw them back in the ‘90s and was surprised to see so many original members still in the band after almost 40 years, especially when you consider they were one-hit wonders. Granted, “I Melt With You” is one of the most played ‘80s songs ever (something like over three million plays on the radio) and has been in a ton of movies whether listed on the soundtrack or not. It was a prerequisite I believe for any band that played Yesterday’s backing the day to play it along with “Blister In the Sun” and “What I Like About You”. For what it’s worth the band has aged well with Robbie Grey

bands from the mid to late ‘80s that were fringe new wave and alternative pop. There were a ton of bands like that such as Wang Chung, Mister Mister and so on. Admittedly, I tuned all these bands out a little back in the day even though I sang along because I was either too lazy to change the station or was in the mood for one of their radio hits. Limahl made his first ever performance in America on this night. That’s right, the former and current lead singer of Kajagoogoo never played in this country before despite the massive hit “Too Shy”. Of the one-hit wonders on the bill “Too Shy” is the highest charting hitting #5 in the U.S. and #1 in two countries and #2 in two others. To his credit, Limahl is a two-hit wonder as he also has a solo hit with the title track to the movie “The NeverEnding Story” (#17 U.S.). What many including myself is he was only in the band for the one album (White Feathers) and was asked to leave the band not long after the album’s release, thus the band never toured this country. Prior to this evening he

Opening the night was Annabella Lwin. She of course is Bow Wow Wow. The original band was hijacked from Adam Ant (they were the original Ants) by Malcolm McLaren. They are the poster children of one-hit wonder. “I Want Candy” actually only made the Top 30 when it was released and was a cover of a song by The Strangeloves in 1965 charting higher at #11. Annabella was the child of the show. Many don’t realize or forgot that she was only 14 when Bow Wow Wow was formed. Her set was the shortest at three songs first performing, “Baby, Oh No!” from the I Want Candy album followed by “Do You Wanna Hold Me?” from When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going and of course finishing her short set with “I Want Candy”. During her brief set she danced and spun around the stage getting quite the workout and doing a fine job setting the tone for the evening.
