Dear Rocco, A former co-worker called and asked for a favor. When he was with the company, he (ahem!) “borrowed” some old office equipment from storage. He now wants me to return it for him. What should I do? Put it back? Inform my boss? BW Dear BW, Take the “borrowed” equipment and put it on your boss’s desk. You did not take it. Tell him what you told me. As long as you had nothing to do with him “borrowing” the equipment you should have nothing to worry about. On the other hand, tell your own coworker to return it himself and not expect you to do his dirty work. We all need to be responsible for our own actions and not put it off on someone else. Dear Rocco, My best friend wants to be a singer and she is really

good. I ‘m afraid that when we grow up, she might become famous and not remember me. What do I do? BS Dear BS, Be their best friend first and foremost. If you guys are truly best friends or true friends there is no way she is going to forget you. If you are that insecure about it or yourself take a couple of business management classes and become her manager and make yourself invaluable to her. An artist needs to be an artist and the best way for an artist to be an artist is to have someone they can trust to handle the business aspect of being an artist.

I know I should take a chance and meet him or else I will always wonder what I missed. But I’ve never had a boyfriend before and this is the first time I ever felt special to someone. I’m just so afraid I’ll lose him once we meet, what should I do? AT Dear AT, I hate to tell you this, but in the day of social media he probably already has an idea of what you look like. If he knows anything about you like say… your name, he more than likely knows more about you than you realize. Everybody does that. You have nothing to worry about unless he’s a serial killer or with the Feds. Dear Rocco, Would it be in poor taste

1958 Billboard magazine runs an article that states “Payola, that under-the-turntable device whereby record companies win plugs and influence disc jockeys, is fast growing into a monster that may yet destroy its creators. According to key record execs, jockey payola is so widespread that it’s no longer possible to measure its effectiveness.” Disc jockey Alan Freed’s career will soon be ended by the scandal.

The Beatles’ first single, “Love Me Do”, backed with “P.S. I Love You”, is released in the UK. The record gets its first radio play the same evening on the EMI-owned Radio Luxembourg and will peak at #17 on the UK chart in December.

1961 A group of teens from Hawthorne California calling themselves The Pendletones recorded three songs for Hite and Dorinda Morgan, who ran a publishing business and two small record labels. One of those songs was called “Surfin’”, which, when pressed on to a Candix Records 45 rpm disc, was credited to The Beach Boys, a name made up by promotion man Russ Reagan, who had taken it upon himself to rechristen the band. “Surfin’” would get to #75 on the Billboard chart and sold 50,000 copies, launching the career of one of America’s most successful Rock ‘n’ Roll acts.

1963 Faced with parental disapproval and the anxiety of abandoning his art studies, 16-year-old Anthony Topham is replaced in The Yardbirds by 18-year-old Eric Clapton. After a career as a interior designer, painter and musician, Topham would rejoin The Yardbirds from 2013 to 2015. 1964 Capitalizing on material it owns, recorded by its two bestselling groups, Vee Jay Records releases the album “The Beatles Vs. The Four Seasons”. The record, which consists of previously released material, stays on the LP chart for just three weeks, reaching only as high as #142.

1970 Curtis Mayfield quits The Impressions to launch a solo career and to found his own label, Curtom Records, with manager Eddie Thomas. He would go on to place five songs on the Billboard Hot 100 over the next four years, including “Freddie’s Dead” (#4) and “Superfly”, (#8), both of which sold over a million copies in 1972. Just days after recording what would be her biggest hit, 27 year old Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose at Hollywood’s Landmark Hotel . “Me and Bobby McGee” would reach number one in early 1971, her highest chart success since “Piece Of My Heart” with Big Brother And The Holding Company in 1968.

Early editions included a postcard featuring a photo of Lennon holding a pig, in mockery of Paul McCartney’s similar pose with a sheep on the cover of his album “Ram”. Soul Train, a new, weekly TV show that showcased current R&B artists, makes its debut in the US. The first broadcast featured Gladys Knight And The Pips, Eddie Kendricks and Honey Cone. Donny Osmond’s remake of Steve Lawrence’s 1962 #1 hit “Go Away Little Girl” tops the Cashbox Best Sellers chart. 1974 Olivia Newton-John had her first chart topping album with “If You Love Me, Let Me Know”, which contained her third US number one single, “I Honestly Love You”.

1971 Rod Stewart enjoyed a two sided, US number one record with “Maggie May / “Reason To Believe”. Although Maggie May was not her real name, the song was co-written by Stewart about the first woman he had sex with. Rod later revealed that he was surprised by the song’s success, saying, “I still can’t see how the single is such a big hit. It has no melody.” Rolling Stone magazine seemed to disagree when, in 2004, they ranked the song #131 on their list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

1975 39-year-old Al Jackson, drummer for Booker T. And The MGs, is shot and killed by a burglar at his home. His wife was questioned about the killing because she was arrested in July for shooting her husband in the chest during a domestic dispute. He wasn’t badly hurt and the charges were dismissed when his wife claimed self-defense. On October 1st, Jackson returned home to what police describe as a botched robbery attempt. According to Jackson’s wife, an intruder made her answer the door and then threw her husband to the floor demanding money. Jackson was forced to lie face down and then was shot in the back five times. The identity of the culprit remains a mystery.

After the show, Cocker says he’s happy with Belushi’s impression of him. Rick Dees And His Cast of Idiots receive a Gold record for one of the more bizarre novelty hits of the decade, “Disco Duck”. In December, it will become only the fourth single ever to be certified Platinum. Dees was fired from his broadcasting job at WMPS in Memphis, Tennessee, when he mentioned that his song, “Disco Duck”, was almost #1, and that his own radio station would not let him play it. He was soon hired by a rival Memphis station and went on to a highly successful radio career, being inducted into both the National Radio Hall of Fame, and the National Association of Broadcasters Hall Of Fame. 1977 Gene Simmons receives a Platinum record for his solo LP, one of four released concurrently by the members of KISS. Simmons’ charts the highest in the US, reaching #22. 1978 Exile achieved their only number one song on Billboard’s Pop chart with “Kiss You All Over”, a #6 hit in the UK. the first commercially available compact disc player in Tokyo, Japan. The price of the unit is about $650 US. Albums that have been converted to CD are slow to reach the North American market and the first to go on sale is Billy Joel’s “52nd Street”. “Jack and Diane” by John Cougar led the Billboard singles chart, while his earlier release, “Hurts So Good” was still at number ten. Peter Gabriel and Steve Hacket join their former band mates in Genesis for a one-time benefit performance at The Bowl in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England to help raise money for Gabriel’s WOMAD project (World of Music, Arts and Dance). 1990 Two separate lawsuits are combined on appeal against CBS Records and Ozzy Osbourne by the parents of 17 year old Harold Hamilton and 16 year old Michael Waller, both of whom are alleged to have committed suicide after listening to Osbourne’s “Suicide Solution”. The Supreme Court would refuse to reinstate the case. A California court had already dismissed a separate suit in 1988, ruling that suicide was not a foreseeable result of Osbourne’s song. 1992 Sinead O’Connor did her career some major damage when she appeared on US TV’s Saturday Night Live and held up an 8” x 10” color photo of Pope John Paul II, ripped it into pieces and said, “Fight the real enemy.” Over the next few days the NBC switchboard in New York received thousands of calls denouncing O’Connor’s performance. The network and the show’s executive producer, Lorne Michaels, both denied any knowledge of O’Connor’s plan and said she had performed the song differently in rehearsal. Catholic groups expressed outrage at the act and called it patently offensive to people of all religious beliefs. NBC has never again aired the O’Connor performance. 1996

White “has started a course of maintenance dialysis therapy. A 58-year-old Canadian strongman broke a Guinness World Record in New York by pulling a 33,400-pound bus 16 feet by using his upper body. Kevin Fast pulled a 40-foot, all-electric Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus on West 67th Street in Manhattan to break the record for heaviest vehicle pulled using only the upper body. Fast broke his own record from 2017, when he pulled a 24,427-pound truck in Cobourg, Ontario. “We are excited to be part of a historic Guinness World Records attempt to pull the heaviest vehicle by the upper body, and congratulate Kevin Fast on his exciting achievement,” Frank Annicaro, acting president at the MTA Bus Company and senior vice president at New York City Transit’s Department of Buses, said in a statement.

Organizers of a world record attempt in Chicago said they are hoping to gather more than 178 canine couples to break the record for the world’s largest dog wedding ceremony. Leslie Allison-Seei, chair of the Villa Park Community Focus on Unifying Neighbors Commission, or F.U.N., said she previously participated in a November 2008 attempt at the record in Oak Park, Ill. The attempt featured 87 canine couples, falling short of the record-setting number of 178, which was set in Littleton, Colo., in 2007. Allison-Seei said she wants to see Illinois take the record Saturday at Lions Park in the town of Villa Park. Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone is slated to officiate at the dog wedding ceremony, which Allison-Seei said will include canines from across the Chicago metropolitan area. Allison-Seei said pet owners whose dogs don’t have mates to marry can participate in a round of “do A Dutch scientist has uncovered old recordings of a musk duck mimicking the phrase, “You bloody fool!” - learnt when it was raised by humans in an Australian bird park. Leiden University scientist Carel Ten Cate said that what was inter-

He said he had at first wondered whether the recordings, made in the 1980s, could be a hoax, but they were made by living ornithologist Peter Fullagar, who co-authored the paper. Ten Cate said Ripper had a bit more in his repertoire - he could also make a noise like the sound of a door closing and its latch clicking. ggy speed-dating” to find an appropriate spouse right before the ceremony. Young Scandinavians are sticking nicotine pouches up their rectums and inside their foreskins in a trend that’s left health experts concerned and baffled, according to Danish national broadcaster DR. Nicotine pouches are popular in Scandinavia, especially among young people. Snus, a wet tobacco pouch that originates from Sweden, has a particularly long tradition - despite being illegal in every European Union country save Sweden itself. In July, a Danish law came into effect that banned the use of snus and other nicotine pouches during school hours after reports of students sticking the packets around classrooms. One teenager whom DR spoke to recounted how he and a group of friends had stuck nicotine bags up the foreskin of their genitals while drunk at a party. Meanwhile, a health expert told the broadcaster about a boy she had spoken to who had claimed to have done the same. “They got drunk and one forgot to take out the nicotine pouch,” she said. “The next morning he woke up and his penis was red and very swollen and hurting.” She also pointed out that nicotine pouches can cause gum damage, and could potentially cause similar damage to other parts of the body.
