Herman’s Hermits were at the top of the British singles chart with “I’m Into Something Good”, the group’s only UK #1. The song was recorded earlier in the year by Earl-Jean McCrea, who had been the lead singer of the R&B vocal group The Cookies. Her version peaked at #38 in the US.
The Strawberry Alarm Clock perform “Incense and Peppermints” on American Bandstand, pushing it further up the US charts on its way to number one. The song “To Sir with Love” by Lulu, from the film of the same name, entered the Billboard Hot 100 where it eventually reached #1. The record wasn’t promoted in Britain and didn’t make the UK chart. 1968 Dusty Springfield enters a recording studio in Memphis to lay down tracks for what will prove to be the critically acclaimed LP “Dusty In Memphis”, which will include her US #10 hit, “Son Of A Preacher Man”. 1969 Carlos Santana had his first taste of success when his debut LP entered Billboard’s album chart. The disc contained his hit single “Evil Ways” and would eventually hit number 4, staying on the chart for over two years. His 1999 album, “Supernatural” has sold in excess of ten million copies as well as winning a Grammy Award for Best Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocals.

1970 The Partridge Family TV show, starring David Cassidy debuts on ABC-TV. 1971 Cat Stevens’ “Peace Train” is released in the US where will reach #7 on the Billboard Pop chart. Outside of America, the song was not issued as a single because Island Records wanted to encourage people to buy the album rather than the 45. 1974 Elvis Presley goes on a $100,000 shopping spree in Memphis and buys six Lincoln Continentals and five Cadillacs and distributes them among his friends. 1975 41-year-old Jackie Wilson suffers a heart attack while performing at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Ironically, he was in the middle of singing one of his biggest hits, “Lonely Teardrops” and was two words into the line, “....my heart is crying” when he collapsed to the stage, striking his head heavily. He suffered brain damage and lapsed into a coma. Although he never uttered another word, he remained clinging to life for over eight years and died January 21st, 1984. 1976 Boston’s first LP enters the Billboard album chart where it will climb to #3 and become the fastest-selling debut album in Rock his-
tory. The LP contains the hit single “More Than a Feeling” which will reach #5 early next year. 1977 Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” peaks at #3 on the US singles chart while E.L.O.’s “Telephone Line” reaches #7. “Best Of My Love” by The Emotions held down the top spot. 1980 35-year-old Bob Marley collapses on stage at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh. He will be flown to the Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York where he is diagnosed with a brain tumor and told he has just one month to live, although he will actually survive until next May. The rest of his tour is canceled. Led Zeppelin was rehearsing at Jimmy Page’s house in preparation for an American tour when drummer John Bonham was found dead in his bed following an all-day drinking binge. The 32-year-old Bonham had passed out and choked on his own vomit. In December, Led Zeppelin would announce that they were disbanding, saying they could not continue without Bonham. 1981 Hall And Oates’ “Private Eyes” LP enters the Billboard chart. The album will go Platinum and contains two #1 hits: “Private Eyes” and “I Can’t Go For That”, as well as the Top Ten hit “Did It in a Minute”. 1986 The Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” re-enters the US Pop singles chart over twentyfive years after it first appeared. The song was featured in the films Ferris
Bueller’s Day Off and Rodney Dangerfield’s Back To School. Cliff Burton, bass guitarist for Metallica, was killed when the band’s tour bus skidded and flipped over in rural southern Sweden. The 24-year-old Burton was thrown through a window of the bus, which fell on top of him, crushing him to death. He would be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the group on April 4, 2009. 1988 While brandishing a shotgun, James Brown bursts into an insurance office next to his and demands to know which of the fortyodd salesmen used his personal washroom. Police were called and a two-state car chase ensued, during which nearly two dozen shots were fired into Brown’s pick-up. He was eventually arrested in Georgia without further incident. Although he was offered a deal to plead guilty and spend ninety days in jail, he refused and was sentenced instead to two concurrent six-year terms. He was paroled on February 27th, 1991. Bobby McFerrin’s a cappella tune, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” hit the top of the record charts, not only in the US but in almost every country in the world. The song would go on to win Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It made #2 in the UK. We’re a people’s band and that suits us just fine.” 2003 Robert Palmer, who reached number 14 in the US in 1979 with “Bad Case Of Loving You”, died of a heart attack at the age of 54. He found success both in his solo career and in the supergroup Power Station, and had Top 10 songs in both the US and the UK. 2011 The New York Post reported that Sly Stone was living in his van, parked in the notoriously rough Los Angeles neighborhood of Crenshaw. The 68-year-old rocker was quoted as saying “I like my small camper. I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving.” 2015 Columbia Records announced the release of “Alone In The Universe”, the first new album by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) in fifteen years.

2020 Helen Reddy, the Australian singer behind the feminist anthem “I Am Woman”, died at the age of 78. Along with fourteen other Billboard Top 40 hits, she hosted a season of The Helen Reddy Show on NBC TV in 1973, and a year later was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Late in life she was rumored to be suffering from health problems and spent her last years in a celebrity care home in Los Angeles. 7 8 - y e a r - o l d singer/songwriter Mac Davis passed away following heart surgery. Along with his own hit records, which included the chart topping “Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me” in 1972, Mac also wrote “In the Ghetto” and “A Little Less Conversation” for Elvis Presley. He hosted his own NBC variety series in 1974, the same year the Academy of Country Music named him entertainer of the year.

The National Archives has added a “harmful language” warning above the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. “Harmful Language Alert,” a National Archives warning reads at the top of the page, “See NARA’s Statement on Potentially Harmful Language.” NARA’s Statement on Potentially Harmful Content warns that “harmful or difficult content” may be seen in our founding documents and details how they’re censoring and revising content. Some items may: reflect racist, sexist, ableist, misogynistic/misogynoir, and xenophobic opinions and attitudes; - be discriminatory towards or exclude diverse views on sexuality, gender, religion, and more; - include graphic content of historical events such as violent death, medical procedures, crime, wars/terrorist acts, natural disasters and more. “NARA, working in conjunction with diverse communities, will seek to balance the preservation of this history with sensitivity to how these materials are presented to and perceived by users.” The new speech codes, trigger warnings and censorship of the past are being implemented as part of NARA’s “institutional commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.”
Licking toads to get you high is a myth which appears to be reinforced in popular media, in shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy. But is there any truth behind it? One resort town in the Caribbean has been pulling in tourists from around the world with promises of God-like experiences from ‘speedtoading’. The smoking of a powerful hallucinogenic toad venom in short retreats, a practice known as “speed-toading,” is the hot new trend in the Caribbean tourist hub of Tulum. Bufo alvarius, which contains a fast-acting psychedelic often referred to simply as bufo, is touted by some as a miracle cure for the ills of the modern world and mental health issues. Emerging research suggests it brings about mystical experiences, reduces depression, and relieves anxiety. But a significant minority of users report serious mental health difficulties. But there are heightened concerns from parts of the community of bufo experts and ceremony facilitators over “speed-toading” where participants can be in and out of an establishment well within an hour. The experiences can appear more motivated by profit than efforts to provide holistic transformational journeys with wraparound aftercare. “There have been some complaints, but they’re always because of an underlying condition. So it’s not the medicine,” said Valterri Hietaluoma,
co-founder of the Bufo Alvarius Sanctuary. Hietaluoma added that God-mode is the goal of each session: “If the client doesn’t lose the notion of time and space completely, I consider it too low a dose.” The recipients of the 2021 Ig Nobel Prizes include researchers who experimented with upside-down rhinos, analyzed the bacteria in discarded gum and studied the ways cats communicate with humans. The prizes, awarded by science magazine Annals of Improbable Research, were announced Thursday at the 31st annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony. The Biology Prize went to Swedish researcher Susanne Schotz, who analyzed the variations in cat vocalizations while communicating with humans. The Ecology Prize was awarded to a team of Spanish and Iranian researchers who used genetic analysis to compare the different species of bacteria found on discarded chewing gum recovered from paved surfaces in various countries. The Chemistry Prize went to a team of researchers from Germany, Britain, New Zealand, Greece, Cyprus and Austria who used chemical analysis to test whether bodily odors created by a movie theater audience could be used to track incidents of violence, sexuality, drug use and profanity in films. The Economics Prize was presented to Pavlo Blavatskyy, who led a study that suggests the obesity of a country’s politicians can be used to indicate the level of corruption in the country. The Medicine Prize was awarded to Olcay Cem Bulut, Dare Oladokun, Burkard Lippert and Ralph Hohenberger for their study demonstrating that sexual orgasms are as effective as decongestant medicines at improving nasal breathing. The Peace Prize was given to a team of U.S. researchers who tested the hypothesis that humans evolved beards to protect themselves from punches to the face. The Physics Prize went to a team of researchers who conducted experiments to learn why pedestrians do not constantly collide with other pedestrians, while the Kinetics Prize went to a different team of researchers who looked into why pedestrians sometimes do collide with other pedestrians. The Entomology Prize was awarded to John Mulrennan Jr., Roger Grothaus, Charles Hammond and Jay Lamdin, the authors of research study “A New Method of Cockroach Control on Submarines.” The Transportation Prize was given to a team of Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Britain and U.S. researchers who conducted experiments to determine whether it is safer to airlift a rhinoceros with the animal upside-down.
