Dear Rocco, I love my job but they are delaying a promotion I was promised. On top of thatm, they are letting us know our salaries are being cut. To quote The Clash, “should I stay or should I go”? JR

Dear Rocco, My relationship with my girlfriend is going nowhere but south. I feel it is time to break free and see what option there are out there. I am in a quandary, however. During our time together I have become really good friends with her friends. I don’t want to lose them – and there’s nothing sexual in my reasoning for not wanting to lose them. If I do break up, I am afraid I will lose them as well and don’t ant that to happen. Any advice? MK Dear MK, First question you have to honestly ask yourself is if your girlfriend is a bitch. Blunt, I know, but that’s me. If she is, you’re screwed. That being said, if they are your friends as well, you shouldn’t lose them. If you do, that says something about them. Breakups are hard, figuring out the right times to cut ties, what you win and lose in a situation like that and so on. Make sure your reason for wanting a split is not petty on your part, because if it is you don’t deserve a girlfriend or any of her friends. Dear Rocco, My boyfriend recently told me he would never physically hurt me. I don’t know how to react to him saying that. Why would that even cross his mind? He’s treated me well, and to be honest we rarely have disagreements. It makes me wonder about his past relationships

and how they ended. thoughts? VW

Any

Dear VW, Do you feel he bears a physical threat to you? If so why are you still with him. He probably misspoke if you ask me. Because in recent years of the #metoo movement a lot of guys seem to want to exclaim to the gods above how they could never do physical harm to a woman. They are almost afraid of the species. And while they won’t physically harm you they have other ways they can harm you. Word hurt these days – not me, but others who aren’t psychologically hit. These guys find how to manipulate you and hurt you in passive/aggressive ways. Bullies are no longer physically intimidating individuals. Most cyber bullies are little boys and girls or grown man-child. The tables on bullying have turned thanks to cyber technology. That being said I don’t know anything about your past relationships, if they became physically abusive or not. And if it is something that seems to continuously happen to you, you need to take a serious look in the mirror and see what it is about your personality or ways of going about things that might trigger them or make you a victim – and to be honest if it is something deep in your conscious that makes you want to be a victim.

Dear JR, As we creep out of this pandemic it has become an employees market. Thanks (not really) to those in government they made it more profitable to collect unemployment benefits than work. And now that the economy is opening up again employers are having a hard time finding people to work. For some reason people looking for work think they can dictate to potential employers how much they “deserve” to be paid, and if they don’t get it they’ll just collect more government sanctioned unemployment benefits, which is one of the reasons we have seen inflation running rampant like this country hasn’t seen since the 1970s. If you really love your job and more importantly the company you are with, I would stick it out. More than likely unless the company is about to go belly up, this is temporary. I remember early in my career. I was faced with a similar situation. We lost our main investor and there wasn’t money to pay salaries like we had been accustomed. I remember the team meeting we had when this all went down explaining the situation. My boss told us he

would no longer be able to pay us like we had been accustomed. He told us he understood if we didn’t want to stick it out and would provide us with glowing letters of recommendations. If we wanted to tough it out with him, he would pay us what we could. Sure, a number of my co-workers left, but myself and one or two others stuck it out. Before you knew it, I was made a partner and am happily still there to this day. That being said, depending on what work you do, if you are any good at it, most likely others have taken notice and a change of environment and pace might do you some good. Dear Rocco, What did you do during the pandemic? HP Dear HP, Binge watched a bunch of old movies and TV shows I hadn’t seen or not seen in a long time, catch up on sleep and gained about 30 pounds – which I’m in the process of losing again as I write this. Rocco is a common sense, tell-itlike-it-is, no-nonsense kind of guy offering real advice on any subject put before him. the most recorded songs in history. The Who have their equipment van stolen outside the Battersea Dog’s Home in England while they are inside purchasing a guard dog. The empty van was eventually recovered. 1954 To coincide with the release of his second Sun single, “Good Rockin’ Tonight”, Elvis Presley, along with Bill Black and Scotty Moore, make their first appearance at The Grand Old Opry. Audience reaction is so poor, the Opry’s manager Jim Denny suggests that Elvis go back to driving a truck. Radio personality Alan Freed begins broadcasting on New York’s WINS at an annual salary of $75,000. Although the phrase “rock and roll” had been around since the 1940s, Freed is generally given credit for making it popular. 1955 Bill Haley And His Comets turn down a $2,000 offer for a 15 date tour of Australia because of their fear of flying. 1956 Elvis Presley surprises his mother with a gift of a pink Cadillac, even though she doesn’t drive. The car will remain in the Presley family and eventually goes on display at Graceland. 1957 The Buddy Deane Bandstand debuts on WJZ-TV in Baltimore. The two hour Rock ‘n’ Roll show gave viewers a chance to call in and talk to celebrity performers, which tied up lines so badly the phone company was forced to ask Deane to desist. 1959 Following the stabbing deaths of two teenagers by a 17-yearold and other similar incidents of violence in New York City, WCBS radio in the Big Apple bans all versions of “Mack the Knife”.

1962 John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr begin recording together for the first time at EMI’s St. John Studio. They laid down six songs including “Love Me Do” and “P.S. I Love You”, which will ultimately become their first single. Producer George Martin had originally wanted to release the Mitch Murray composition, “How Do You Do It”, but the band’s lack of enthusiasm was clear in the recording and the song remained unreleased until it appeared on “Anthology 1” in 1995. Dickey Lee cracks the Billboard Top 40 for the first time with a song called “Patches”. Despite being banned by some U.S. radio stations for its teen suicide theme, the record would climb to #6 on the Hot 100 and enjoy an eleven week stay. 1964 The Animals had their only number one hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 when “House of the Rising Sun” reached the top. To promote the group in the US, disc jockeys were sent boxes of animal crackers wrapped with special promotional material. The band would continue to turn out hits like “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”, “It’s My Life”, “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”, “Monterey” and “San Franciscan Nights” before splitting up at the end of the decade.

1966 Question Mark And The Mysterians’ “96 Tears” makes its debut on Billboard’s Hot 100, where it will eventually reach number one. 1968 The Doors are forced to perform as a trio at a concert in Amsterdam after lead singer Jim Morrison collapses while dancing during the Jefferson Airplane’s performance. After a two week absence, Ringo Starr rejoins The Beatles. He had quit the band when he found out that Paul McCartney had been erasing his drum tracks for “The White Album” and replacing them with his own. Upon Ringo’s return to the studio, he found his drum kit covered with flowers to welcome him back. Eric Clapton records the guitar solo for the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, becoming the first non-Beatle to appear on one of their recordings. George Harrison later said that Clapton’s presence had another effect on the band: “It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behavior.” 1969 The Youngbloods do not appear on The Tonight Show as scheduled. The Godfather of Soul says he’s tired. At the same time, he’s fighting a paternity suit filed by a one-time president of the local James Brown fan club. Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” peaks at #7 on the Billboard singles chart. Departing from his usual high pitched, nasal style, Dylan’s low-key vocal also pushed the song to #5 in the UK. 1970 Jimi Hendrix makes his last major concert appearance at the Love and Peace Festival in Puttgarden, Germany. 1971 The New York Times says that Sly Stone’s West Hollywood landlord is suing the Rock star for $3 million, complaining that his building is inundated with “loud, noisy, boisterous persons,” and wants Sly out. 1973 The Allman Brothers started a five week run at the top of the US album chart with “Brothers And Sisters”, the group’s only US #1 LP. Marvin Gaye enjoyed his second #1 hit on the Billboard Pop chart with “Let’s Get It On”. He

would place 7 more records on the list by 1982, giving him a total of 40. 1976 “You Should Be Dancing” becomes The Bee Gees third US number one single. It was this song that launched the trio into Disco stardom and is the first chart-topper in which Barry Gibb used his now familiar falsetto. KISS releases the Soft-Rock ballad, “Beth”, which will rise to #7 and become their only US Top 10 hit. The song was originally titled “Beck”, written about a woman named Rebecca, the wife of one of Peter Criss’ former band mates. Because Criss dedicated the number to his wife Lydia at each performance, many mistakenly thought the song was about her. Blue Oyster Cult’s biggest hit, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, cracks the Billboard Top 40 on its way to #12. Disco band Wild Cherry’s selftitled album, which includes their number one single, “Play that Funky Music”, is certified Gold. 1978 The Who’s drummer, Keith Moon died of an overdose of a sedative called Heminevrin that had been prescribed to prevent seizures induced by alcohol withdrawal. The 31 year old Moon died in the same apartment that had previously belonged to Harry Nilsson and earlier, Mama Cass Elliot. He is eventually replaced in The Who by ex-Faces drummer Kenney Jones. 1981 Stevie Nick’s solo LP, “Bella Donna”, reached the top of Billboard’s album chart with the help of a pair of duet singles, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with Tom Petty and “Leather and Lace” with Eagles’ drummer, Don Henley. The Techno-Pop duo of Marc Almond and David Ball, who call themselves Soft Cell, perform their current UK #1 hit

“Tainted Love” on Top Of The Pops. In the US, the tune will reach #8 and spend a total of 43 weeks on the charts. 1982 Steve Wozniak, the founder of the Apple Computer Company, sponsors a three day music Festival in San Bernardino, California, featuring The Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne, Eddie Money, Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, Dave Edmunds, Santana, the B-52’s, The Kinks, The Police, The Cars, Tom Petty and others. Even though the event was attended by over 400,000 people and took in $10 million, the concert still ended up losing money. 1985 Ringo Starr became the first Beatle to become a grandfather when son Zak and his wife Sarah had a daughter, Tatia Jayne. 1986 After just getting his license back after a five-year suspension, Gregg Allman is arrested in Florida for drunk driving. Michael Nesmith joins the other three Monkees on stage for the first time since they disbanded in 1970. 1987 The US Rock ‘n’ Roll TV show American Bandstand was officially cancelled after 30 years on ABC-TV. A Swiss canton is rewarding its long-lived residents by offering 100 bottles of wine to those who reach age 100. Fribourg state bailiff Claude Freiburghaus said preparations are currently underway to present a resident named Marie-Antoinette with a bouquet of flowers and an offer for 100 bottles of wine when she turns 100. Freiburghaus said the canton first came up with the scheme in 2000 and formerly offered a free armchair as a substitute for the wine, but the chair was discontinued in 2015 due to a lack of interest from local centenarians. He said the current program offers a charitable donation or a voucher for use at a local merchant or craftsman to residents who decline the wine offer, but most 100-yearolds opt for the alcoholic beverage.

Driving is dangerous enough. But one Maine driver threw caution and common sense out of the car window with a stunt that put himself and his passengers in the hospital. The State Police in Maine, said that the driver who attempted to take a selfie, caused a car accident that left several people injured. 29-year-old Jordan Toner was driving with seven passengers when he leaned over to take a selfie with the other passengers. While doing so, he ran off the road and crashed into a tree. Among the wounded were two women, who were sitting in the front seat. Police said that one of the women suffered a broken nose and cut above her eyes. The second woman suffered a neck injury and possibly back injuries. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Two male passengers also suffered injuries. The driver was cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle due to distraction. A California man who ushered his wife and kids out of their home during an apartment complex fire said his first thought was to save his barbecue ribs. Robert Wright told reporters he was barbecuing at 3 a.m. when the fire erupted at

the apartment next door. “The only thing I think first is make sure them ribs is right and I ran over and got my family man,” Wright said. He said he carried his kids out of the apartment and was able to rescue his ribs. Wright explained why he was barbecuing so late at night. “It was three o’clock in the morning, I was hungry man, I was like put them ribs on there,” he said. A woman and a child escaped from the fire next door to Wright and were treated for smoke inhalation. Wright said he didn’t require any medical attention. “I didn’t get any injuries except for all the smoke in my lungs, but I already had smoke in my lungs so I’m alright,” he said. An Illinois job applicant texted his way out of an offered position when he accidentally sent the human resources manager a nude selfie, police said. Elmhurst police said the human resources manager at a St. Charles company contacted authorities to report receiving two nude pictures via text message from a man who had been offered a position with the company. “There was a conditional offer of employment made to this particular applicant,” Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth said. “He texted the HR director and sent a nude photo of himself.” Ruth said the company learned the identity of the sender when he later used the same phone number for a follow-up call. Police said the man who sent the pictures told investigators the nude selfies were sent accidentally. “[Police] contacted the offender who admitted to sending the photographs, explaining they were actually meant for another individual and were sent to the victim in error,” the police report of the incident states. “[Police] advised the offender to cease any contact with the victim.” The victim decided not to press charges, but police said the man’s actions were not free from consequences. “My understanding is they’ve rescinded the offer of employment,” Ruth said.
