As I sit here waiting for my appointment time many things cross my mind. Let me share some of them with you…

With all the condos and apartments going in downtown, would the Patten make a great one? I shed a tear every time I pass Market and MLK and remember the beautiful trees they destroyed for the new park… what a waste of money. Do you think the new park will get any more use than the old? Divided States of America I don’t watch “60 Minutes” very often. I used to love it, especially back in the days of Andy Rooney. (Yes, I realize I’m dating myself with that observation.) In any event, I watched “60 Minutes” almost in its entirety this past Sunday…

segment focused on the human cost of the hurricane and its ensuing floods. Particularly poignant for me was a segment showing a man who was emptying his house of the assorted trash left behind after a flood that was higher than he was tall. The man was 6-3. His wife was a seamstress. He looked through a box of waterlogged papers… all of his wife’s sewing patterns, going back to her days in high school. It was heartbreaking…

debut of Oprah Winfrey as a special correspondent for the show. Oprah was facilitating a focus group discussion between those who had voted for Donald Trump and those who didn’t. A focus groups specialist pulled the two groups together and paid each of the participants $100. It was clear early on that none of the group members were in it for the money… ...As you might expect, the debate got a bit heated at times. But, for the most part, the focus group kept its opinions civil. Unsurprisingly, the pro-Trump side of the table thought that all of the investigations into the possible Trump-Russia connections were much ado about nothing. The anti-Trump side

thought it was absolutely imperative to fully investigate the presidential election and any possible involvement by the Russians and/or anyone in the Trump presidential campaign. Despite such divisions, both sides agreed that they were frustrated that their Senators and Congressfolk couldn’t do what they did: sit at a table and talk. Try to reach common ground for the benefit of the country. Oprah said several of the panel members from both sides got together and went to dinner after the discussion wound down. They paid for those dinners out of their own pockets, so that’s where some of each member’s $100 went...

cave to have missed all of the coverage of National Football League players “taking a knee” during the playing of the national anthem before their respective games. To say there has been a bit of a hullabaloo over these protests would be the understatement of the century. Unlike the racist protests in Charlottesville, I genuinely think there are good people on both sides of this debate. I can see why a lot of Americans are proud of our nation’s flag and consider the (mostly black) NFL players’ kneeling protests to be “disrespectful.” But… think about it. with their bare hands… kneeling reverently, with their helmets in hand? Me neither… ...Is it going to take a war with North Korea (or someone else) to bring the country together? I hope not. We, as a nation, are facing an unprecedented amount of hurricane recovery. Racial tensions are running high. Health care (or the lack of it) is a major concern for many Americans. Several members of Oprah’s focus group thought the (formerly?) United States of America might be on the brink of a new Civil War. Could they be right? Again… I hope not…

A British cyclist set a new world record by biking around the world in less than 80 days. Ultraendurance cyclist Mark Beaumont rode his bicycle 18,000 miles, across 16 different countries in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes to set the Guinness World Record for fastest circumnavigation by bicycle. “This has been, without doubt, the most punishing challenge I have ever put my body and mind through,” Beaumont said. He began the journey in France on July 2 and

made his way through frigid subzero winters in Australia and New Zealand and the possibility of lingering bad weather in the United States from Hurricane Irma before ending the feat by rolling through the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Beaumont broke the previous world record of 123 days and 43 minutes held by Andrew Nicholson from New Zealand, on the path he dubbed the “Artemis World Cycle.” During the journey he also broke a world records for the farthest distance cycled in one month with 7,031 miles. “This was a fantastic milestone to achieve during the

thought his bride was very generous when she offered to arrange his bachelor party. However, the deceitful woman had other plans as she ran away with money and called off the wedding. Chris Mahone, 27, and his friends were excited to travel to Ibiza, Spain, to celebrate his bachelor party. The group of 29 friends paid a total of 13,200 British pounds (about $17,500) for the airline tickets and hotel rooms. However, when the group arrived at the LeedsBradford airport, they learned that they had been conned by the bride, 29-year-old Rachel Doran. Doran had given the men documents, which appeared to be from a tour company, but they turned out to be fake. After learning that their tickets were never paid for, the groom called the hotel, where they were supposed to stay, and he learned that the rooms were never booked either. When Mahone tried called his fiancee for an explanation, she had vanished from the home they shared, and she went into hiding. Since some of the men had taken time off from work, they decided to go ahead with their planned trip despite losing their money to Doran’s scam. However, the brokenhearted groom was not in the mood of going on a trip. He went home to file a police report against Doran. Mahone posted a message on Facebook, in which he apologized to his friends. “I totally want to apologize to all my fantastic mates who were going to celebrate what was supposed to be my stag do. I can’t apologize enough. I’m sorry boys, I really am.” Prosecutors in Switzerland are investigating mysterious instances involving thousands of euro bills turning up in toilets. The first bundle of 500 euro bills turned up several months ago in a bathroom near a UBS Group AG bank vault at a branch in Geneva. Days later even more banknotes appeared inside toilets at nearby restaurants causing damage that required expensive repairs to unclog the pipes. Police have collected tens of thousands of euros — many appar-

ently cut with scissors — from the pipes and are working to determine where the mystery bills came from. “We are not so interested in the motive but we want to be sure of the origin of the money,” Vincent Derouand, of the Geneva prosecutor’s office, said. Derouand added neither throwing away the bills, nor clogging the toilet are considered crimes and there was no reason to believe the money was obtained nefariously.

Firefighters in a German city said it took about three hours to free a man who had “a very sensitive part of the body” stuck in the center hole of a dumbbell weight. The Feuerwehr Worms Fire Department said in a Facebook post that firefighters responded to a hospital in the appropriately named city of Worms after a man at a local gym ended up with a dumbbell disc stuck around his penis. The firefighters said it took them about three hours to break through the 5.5-pound weight using tools including a grinder and a hydraulic saw. The post included a photo of the dumbbell weight broken into five pieces. “Please do not imitate such actions!” the Facebook post said. A couple was arrested for having sex in public places and recording the acts. The two are facing obscenity charges after they were busted for having sex in a Louisiana public library, and then uploading the videos to their Pornhub page, according to police. Police said they received a report of the two, recording themselves performing sex acts on each other inside the library. The videos were then uploaded them to the porn site. As a result, police arrested 35year-old Rex Jernigan and his wife Elizabeth, 33. Police also learned the couple recorded themselves in various other businesses throughout the City of Houma and Terrebonne Parish, including a Walmart and Burger King. They then uploaded the videos to Pornhub. The Jernigans were charged with six counts of obscenENIGMA

al. The teenage girl placed her order apparently unfazed by this behavior and then it was my turn to order. I got the same non-verbal greeting with an annoyed stare. I started to ask “aren’t you supposed to say something like “Welcome to name of business or maybe can I take your order?” I let it go and placed my order.

Let me start with a recent trip for breakfast to a place that is known for letting you “have it your way”. That’s only if you don’t want butter with your when a teenage girl ahead of face. I thought this was rude pancakes I found out. me got up to the counter to and definitely not profession-

Since I end up eating out a lot I thought I would describe some of my more problematic episodes during culinary events. I have had some great dining out experiences but you know what they say... you always tell a bunch of people about the bad experiences. Most of these happened recently.

About a week ago I went into this “royal” place (hint) with my mouth set on pancakes. As I stood in line I noticed that

asked the manager if I could get some butter. She told me there was no butter. I thought she was messing with me. I stood there for a few seconds and she said, “We’re out of butter”. I asked her, “Shouldn’t you tell people that when they order?” She gave me an annoyed look and said, “The pancakes are butter flavored”. Wow this from a manager. I was really surprised about the flippant attitude of this manager. I replied “Y’all are gonna get the ‘Secret Shopper’ phone call.” I was referring to people who are sent into businesses “undercover” acting as regular customers but who are evaluating/ observing the employee’s service. Her retort was “i don’t care I get paid... and I didn’t understand the last word. I took my butter-less pancakes and after I finished

my meal I went to a website to rate my visit and described my encounter. Will it affect the service there? Who knows.

TWENTY minutes since I had ordered. Now this was at a “fast food” restaurant. Eventually a manager asked me if I had been waited on. Why it takes twenty minutes to cook chicken I am not sure. One time at a restaurant in East Ridge the service was very poor. We waited for over five minutes to be “greeted’ by our server. We waited several minutes for our drinks to

come. Anybody who has eaten out with me knows that I go through some sweet tea. I do not like waiting with an empty glass. Finally I went to the drink station and refilled my girlfriend’s and my glasses. After our food was brought our server never came by to ask if our order was correct or if we needed anything else. Luckily we didn’t want dessert. I had not planned on complaining but when I got to the register to pay the (I believe) assistant manager or owner asked how my meal was. I told them since they asked that our food was good but the service was terrible. She did not ask what was wrong with the service or even apologize that we had a bad experience. It was if she didn’t hear me. Perhaps she just routinely asked that question and was not used to people replying that they had a negative experience. Sometimes my problems with dining out service have been handled professionally. Several years ago my girlfriend and I ate at the now sadly defunct Heartland Grill in Dayton, TN. The service was

very bad. Near the end of our meal an assistant manager came to our table and asked how our meal was. When I told her the meal was great but the service was very bad she told me the owner would come over. When I explained our bad experience the owner told me he was very sorry and that he hoped we would “try them again”. He told me the meal was on him and to get dessert. That’s how to properly handle a poor service problem. Although this did not happen to me a relative told me he recently went through a fast food drive-through. He paid cash but was not handed his change. Although it wasn’t much he decided that it was the principle of the matter

and asked for his change. The over double what my ticket cashier asked “Oh so you want should have been, Later that same day I went to a bakery your change?” and after leaving realized I Now I’ve seen that trick pulled had been overcharged. a habit of doing that and usually the customer did not notice. She said later the waiter would do a cash refund on the “non-ordered” beverage and pocket the money. So just a warning when dining out or whatever you call eating at a ‘fast food’ restaurant. You may want to watch as they ring it up and always check your receipt. You may realize you’ve been overcharged or even given the wrong bill. It might amount to a significant amount and hey it’s the principle of the thing. Eating out may not be just a meal. It may be an adventure. Let the diner beware.

The band was divided into two factions: the pretty boys – Robin and Tom and the geeks – Rick and Bun E. Despite this clash in looks and sartorial style they made a perfect unit and ironically with that being said it is Rick Nielsen who is the centerpiece of the band. After almost 45 years of playing live Nielsen remains the energy and true front man of the band. Granted, Robin Zander has one of the greatest and most recognizable

We’re All Alright!. If you’ve never been to a Cheap Trick concert, I don’t know why. They are what live music is all about. The band remains tight, not sloppy like some bands tend to get performing live, they understand their audience and almost every song becomes a sing-along with fans – even the most casual of Cheap Trick fans. Their mix of catchy lyrics, pop sensibility with a harder rock edge at times not only keeps them relevant but in a capsule what makes rock and roll great. After covering Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting For the Man” came a murderer’s row of hits that gave headliner Foreigner a tough act to follow beginning with “The Flame”, “Dream Police” and others ending with ©Dave Weinthal

This was evident at Chastain Park as Zander stepped back to the drums as Nielsen cascaded back and forth across the stage, playing, tossing picks and singing background vocals. I’ve seen thousands of live shows in my life but I think there is no greater joy in the world than seeing Cheap Trick live. I knew for a long time about all the issues with Lou Gramm and his health for years but Foreigner has been out of the mainstream for the better part of 20 or more years. Where they destined to become another oldies circuit band? Actually no and I was surprised and happy at the same time. Why was I so judgmental of Foreigner? I grew up listening at a high volume and tried to emulate Gramm in the show and bedroom and even played air guitar before there was such a thing. When you listen to a song over and over again that you love you pick up nuances so don’t pick up on such as vocal pitch and tone and a guitar solo or drumbeat. For better or worse you not only become the band’s biggest fan, you also become their biggest critic. I realize I can dismiss them, after all I listen to tons of bands and my musical tastes have shifted over time, but I still like to revisit my past more so now recently. Lydia Loveless Blessed with a commanding, blastit-to-the-back-of-the-room voice, Lydia Loveless was raised on a family farm in Coshocton, Ohio—a small weird town with nothing to do but make music. With a dad who owned a country music bar, Loveless often woke up with a house full of touring musicians scattered on couches and floors. She has turned this potential nightmare scenario into a wellspring of creativity. Always a gifted writer with a lot to say, Lydia gives the full and sometimes terrifying, sometimes ecstatic force of the word. Struggles between balance and outburst, infectious choruses fronting emotional torment are sung with a sneer, a spit, or a tenderness and openness that is both intensely personal and universally relatable. Opposite Box Gets OBscene Known for their wild shows that can be out of hand, Opposite Box changes direction on their new six-song EP OBscene. This is unique because they have always been hard to brand because of the energy the band exudes on stage and after a couple of songs total pandemonium always breaks out.

explosion on stage still keeps that improvisational feel while adding funk and jazz to the mix. There is a mellowing date we day maturing of the band on Obscene. While some songs are a miss like “Afternoon Sex” that has a too much rap metal sound to it showcases some really cool ‘70s era funk with “Birds on a Fence” that becomes entrancing

That being said harnessing that energy constructively has been a challenge in the recording studio for Opposite Box and many recording attempts failed to do so. OBscene suffers from that to a degree but is a step forward for the band at least from the recording aspect. The band that started as a funk/metal hybrid has switched gears on the new album and was mellowed out their sound without losing energy. The new material while lacking in dynamics in some areas from a recording standpoint does a better job of bringing the band’s sound forward.

It will honestly take a couple of listenings to wrap your head around some of the compositions here but once things fall into place it’s a definite original and creative aural experience. Adding a more soul and jazz sound to the mix makes Opposite Box a more palatable recording artist whose sound had originally been difficult to translate from live to the studio. And while the EP doesn’t fire on all cylinders the entire time the ride is still smooth enough to make it a worthy listen.
