Sophia Steinhauer has always known that she wanted to travel and impact communities around the world. After graduating from Solanco High School in 2020, she embarked on her first mission trip to Paraguay. “I’ve always felt called to travel to other countries and connect with the communities,” Steinhauer said. “I love traveling, God and people. People are so interesting to me, and connecting with them is my favorite aspect of it. Visiting other countries and meeting new people on a greater scale gives a great perspective of the world.” Upon returning to Lancaster after her first mission trip, Steinhauer spent six months working as a barista at Latte Luv in Strasburg and starting to plan her next adventure. She set her sights again on South America, where she had fallen in love with the culture on her previous trip. “I felt a huge connection to the culture (in South America). It’s lively and colorful, and I’ve always resonated with its freedom of expression,” Steinhauer said. “I knew I wanted to go back and give myself the right tools for individual ministry.”
On Sept. 15, Steinhauer will leave for Costa Rica to attend a sevenmonth program through MissionGo’s Atlas Travel and Study Abroad program. The program will entail four hours of Spanish learning and four hours of Bible study during weekdays, and weekends will be dedicated to working in the community and focusing on participants’ area of interest.

Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) is nearing the completion of its renovations and move to a new location and is asking for assistance from the community with the final steps of the process. The ministry will be located at 14 S. Church St. in Quarryville, which is close to 1 mile from the previous building. Those interested in helping out may sign up to volunteer on Saturdays, Sept. 17 and Sept. 24. Each day will have two shifts available; the first shift will be from 8 to 11:30 a.m., and the second will be from 12:30 to 4 p.m. SNM requires volunteers to be at least 16 years old and able to lift at least 25 pounds; the organization hopes to have 25 to 30 volunteers for each shift. The first day of work will primarily consist of heavy lifting, such as moving office furniture to the new building, assembling shelves for the food bank and transferring several frozen food items. The second day will focus on packing up the current food bank and loading multiple canned goods onto trucks and trailers so they can be moved to the new building.
Masons wanted the building to be used by a church or ministry, so we when got connected with them, they were thrilled,” said Dolan.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The new location will have seven offices, which Dolan plans to share with other community organizations. “We want to bring services normally offered only in Lancaster city to the Southern End. Right now, we meet basic and crisis needs, but the addition of other organizations will allow us to help our families get the skills and resources they need to become stable,” said Dolan. SNM will also have access to two new program rooms that will allow it to host family programs on-site. Among the programs being developed for the new location are budget workshops, nutrition classes, workforce development opportunities and high school equivalency courses.Formore information or to register as a volunteer, contact SNM at 717-786-4308 or email office@snministries.org.

SNM will use the relocation to expand its programs and increase the scope with which it can help the community. “The biggest changes to the building are bringing the HVAC up to code, establishing a good flow and layout for visitors when they come in and making it easier to access the food bank,” said Teresa Dolan, executive director of SNM. Dolan noted that although renovations are nearing completion, the organization is 25% short of its fundraising goal. Rissler has been working to train Honor since he came to live with the Rissler family at 13 weeks of age. He was housebroken within about three weeks of arrival. Basic commands are next, including learning to touch her hand with his nose, a command trainers can build on to teach Honor to open a door. “He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’,” said Rissler, who explained that Honor is learning to sit patiently under her legs in a restaurant. He also knows the commands “leave it” and “off.” Treats are handed out liberally during this stage of training. In addition, Rissler takes Honor to two PAD training sessions each month - one private and one group lesson. She has worked with both Zoccola and PAD trainer Terri Willner. Rissler is also tasked with taking Honor into the community. “Experiences are vital,” she said, noting that she has taken Honor to restaurants and on a trip to Pittsburgh. While he is out and about, Honor wears a special vest with a no-pull harness underneath and a Martingale“(Puppiescollar. in training) are allowed basically everywhere,” said Rissler, who added the pups have the same rights as service dogs, providing they are not causing issues. Support from PAD during the puppy-raising experience has been plentiful, according to Rissler. “Linzey sends out information regularly about infections going around,” she said, adding that there is a PAD Training Club on Facebook where information for puppy raisers is posted. “There are videos, things to read, modules to learn from, and housebreaking tips,” said Rissler. “There’s a lot of Forsupport.”hispart, Honor has proven himself to be very teachable. “He is easy to train. He’s so intelligent,” said Rissler, who added that as a dog lover, she has been excited to learn about high-reward treats and scatter training techniques, which she can now use with other dogs. BY ANN MEAD ASH “He is a Goldador,” said Jenn Rissler, who is raising Honor, a four-month-old puppy for Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD). Honor, who is all black except for one white spot on his stomach, does not look much like a gold breed of anything, but Rissler is quick to pull up photos of Honor’s mom, a white golden retriever, and his dad, a black Labrador retriever. Rissler became a volunteer puppy raiser for PAD in January, when she received a dog that was soon deemed too fearful for assistance work and released to become a pet. Her second dog, Colby, moved on to his next phase of training toward becoming a school facility dog in early August. “Children are (Colby’s) passion, and Linzey didn’t want to train that out of him,” explained Rissler. Linzey is Linzey Zoccola, who founded PAD in 2009. Zoccola believes it is important to match a dog’s personality to the type of work he will be doing in the future.

FOOTBALL Coming off a 40-35 thriller over Lampeter-Strasburg and regaining the Milk Jug Trophy, the Mules earned their second win of the season with a solid 21-7 nod over visiting Cocalico, Friday, Sept. 2. Solanco took the lead on its first possession and never looked back. Josiah Forren, who led the team with 14 solo tackles, scored from two yards out after Jaden Summers recovered a high punt snap. Aden Herr’s (9 tackles) pick and 34-yard return gave Solanco a 14-0 cushion with 8:20 left in the second quarter and Brody Mellinger’s (3-4, 88 yards, 58 yards rushing) 58yard strike to Noah Baber made it 21-zip before the half. The Eagles got on board with just under five minutes left in the game while Nick Defrancesco’s interception at the final buzzer sealed the victory.
BY MONA STEINHAUER After a preseason home scrimmage, the harrier teams officially opened the season at the Northampton Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 3. together in the process. The races will begin at 4 p.m., and registration is open to children between the ages of 2 and 14. Each day of the series will include multiple race distances for runners of different ages and abilities; the series will offer a 50-yard dash and 75-yard dash for prekindergarten children, as well as a quarter-mile, half-mile and 1-mile race for those between kindergarten and eighth grade.“We cheer on the kids crossing the finish line first just as much as those coming around the corner last,” said Dana Atticks, community coordinator of the Healthy Kids Running Series in Lancaster. “Runners of every ability are celebrated. Children with health issues that you would think would hold them back do their absolute best each week and cross the finish lineAttickssmiling.”has been in charge of the Healthy Kids Running Series for the past 10 years, becoming involved after each of her daughters participated in the event. “This will be my youngest daughter’s last year she can participate; she was just telling me how excited she is for the season to start. It’s our favorite time of year and the atmosphere is always very positive,” Atticks said. Each day of the event traditionally includes a different theme, such as “Crazy Hair Day,” “Favorite Hat Day” and “Superhero Week,” where children dress up as their favorite caped character and a local first responder shows up to cheer on the runners. The Healthy Kids Running Series was founded in 2009 as a means of building kids’ selfesteem and reducing childhood obesity rates throughout America. The Lancaster branch of the series is operated by entirely by volunteers. In the past, members of the Hempfield High School Anchor Club and cross-country team have assisted with each race and encouraged runners. The series is also supported by several local sponsors each year. “We’re always in need of sponsors; they keep the series running,” said Atticks. “We were able to include a photo backdrop in last year’s series, thanks to our sponsors.” To become a sponsor for the series, visit signup.com/hkrslancaster.ter,upfirstingAtticksofferedavailable@gmail.com.Atticksrunningseries.org/https://healthykidsorcontactathkrslancasterRegistrationiscurrentlyonlineandwillalsobeonthedayoftheevent.notedthatthoselook-totryouttheeventforthetimemaychoosetosignforoneraceonly.Toregis-visithttps://run

The volleyball team hosted Cedar Crest, Coatesville, Oxford, Columbia, Lancaster Catholic, Octorara and Reading at the Solanco Showdown on Sept. 3. And while the girls came away without a win, head coach Dillon Costrello was not disappointed. “The scores just do not reflect our overall record/power ranking,” said Costrello. “We are a young team, and this was just their second time playing together. This was a great experience to look at things we have been working on. Overall, I was pleased.”Thegirls opened with a 25-22, 25-18 loss to Columbia and then dropped a 25-11, 25-22 result to Oxford before splitting with Coatesville 25-20, 24-26. all about to your inbox bit.ly/tlenewsletter

GIRLS’ SOCCER

VOLLEYBALL
Staring at a 4-0 first half deficit, Solanco rallied with three goals in the third quarter but K-D matched that effort and picked up the lopsided road “Kennard-Dalewin. was a tough loss, and we knew Red Lion would be tough,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “We have a strong squad of seniors that make up almost the entire starting lineup.” Cook, a junior, leads the scoring with three goals and freshman Kaitlyn Fulton sits with“Sophomoretwo. goalie Caitlin Bennethum now has a full varsity season under her belt and is coming out ready to improve her saves and movement to protect the cage.”
The girls’ soccer team graduated four four-year starters, all on defense, and three-year starter Arianna Seiberlich (centerback) is still out with an injury, but they return their entire midfield (Alanna Brown, Alyssa Harpe, Addison O’Donnell, and Mia DanielMorales) and their forward group (Meg Bailey, Josie Janssen, Kara Peace, and Emma Housekeeper) so firstyear head coach Matt Janssen felt cautiously optimistic. “I felt we would get out to a good start but knew it wouldn’t be easy,” said Janssen. “We also graduated our goalie. Our new defensive positions were the focus of the offseason and preseason. Lindsey Mecouch and Sarah Landis (center backs) and Aribella McComsey and Abby Landis (outside backs) have stepped up and will only get better,” he explained. “Kyleighy Murphy is our starting goalie and has come up with some big saves in big Thosemoments.”bigmoments came in Solanco’s 3-2 win over Penn Manor and 4-3 double OT thriller over Susquehannock, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 30 minutes. Bailey scored before the end of the first half and Janssen scored twice in the last five minutes. Daniel-Morales scored the game-winner on a headed ball off a Landis corner kick. Friday, Sept. 2, Solanco recorded a 3-0 shutout at Octorara. “All three goals were scored in the second half on corner kicks,” Janssen stated. “Sarah was our player of the game. She took our free kicks and corner kicks. She scored on a corner kick and set up Alyssa (header) and Mia to spark the scoring. She also played great defense and is the only senior and returning starter (she formerly started at midfield) on that back line. Her experience, leadership, and ability to motivate has been immeasurable so far.” The winning continued with Wednesday’s 3-1 win over visiting Garden Spot. Housekeeper assisted Bailey, Janssen got the assist to Addison O’Donnell and Harpe converted a feed from A. Landis all before the Spartans prevented the shutout.
