Collin Goshert’s Local Skills Translate Well to National Level

Collin Goshert is a quick study, a fast learner. The 18-year-old resident of Warwick Township thrives in a nurturing and supportive educational environment.

What Goshert has been able to accomplish in 10 short months is nothing short of amazing.

“National champion” has a certain ring to it.

“From my perspective, I didn’t think it was difficult to learn to operate,” said Goshert. “For some, it’s more challenging. It’s not hard to learn if you have the right teachers and the right support. There’s operating and doing it proficiently; there’s a difference.”

Near the end of June, Goshert took top honors in the heavy equipment operations category at the fifth annual SkillsUSA Championships in

24 other high school students from 18 states. Goshert had qualified for the

Knowledge is empowering and emboldening. Information can open minds and lead to understanding that produces empathy and curiosity.

Some people who come to know reptiles come to love them. Those people have given reptiles a chance.

“Imagine if someone told you there’s this magical, mysterious world that’s existed all of your life,” said Jesse Rothacker, a 2000 graduate of Warwick High School, a herpetologist and the president of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. “That’s the reptile world, and it does exist. It’s a very complex world. Maybe if you hear that, you think, ‘I wonder if I can learn a little bit about it and see what all the excitement is about.’ That’s when you fall in love with these animals.”

Rothacker operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary from his home in Rapho Township. The organization includes a rescue/ adoption program and provides the foundation for Rothacker’s engaging, entertaining and educational reptile shows.

Learning expands the mind. Learning fuels the soul. Learning enriches lives.

Learning knows no age limits.

Landis Homes’ Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning isn’t a high school, but its students are seniors.

“One of the keys of healthy

aging is engaging the mind with new adventures,” said Beth Graybill, Pathways Institute’s manager at Landis Homes. “It’s a way to stay engaged with our interests. The social aspect is an important part of it. It helps people get outside of their comfort zones and engage with other seniors in topics they care about.”

“Half of what everyone knows about reptiles is not true,” said Rothacker. “Everyone thinks every snake is a copperhead. Once you understand that they’re not, you can learn new things about reptiles. If you can get past the fear, then you can unlock the fascination.”

Rothacker stages more than 300 45-minute reptile shows each year, both public showings and private performances. He

Guild members Karen Keller-Eyer and Nancy Landis will be at Herb Fest. Keller-Eyer and Landis are the only charter members still in the group, which was

initially an offshoot of a guild on the other side of Lancaster. Keller-Eyer attended the group’s first meeting in October 1982 after her in-laws saw a notice in a newspaper.

In the early days, the Conestoga Herb Guild had fewer than 15 members and met at each other’s homes. “I joined when I was engaged to be married, and I wanted to do herbal things for my weddings,” Keller-Eyer

Workforce Development Board Receives Grant

The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) has received a $130,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation to support and expand its youth workforce development initiatives. The funding will help launch new programs and strengthen existing efforts aimed at preparing the youths of Lancaster County for in-demand careers.

The grant aligns with the Arconic Foundation’s

mission and funding priorities to enhance education through skill-building experiences, advance environmental sustainability, and meet essential human needs. The LCWDB’s initiative will help to meet these goals by equipping youths with workforce-ready skills; promoting sustainable employment; and addressing barriers such as transportation, food insecurity, and lack of access to career exploration opportunities.

The LCWDB will use the funding to launch a new “Learn and Earn” summer program to provide income-limited youths with paid work experience and hands-on career exposure. The funding will also be used to provide supportive services, such as transportation, uniforms, and meals, to reduce barriers to participation. Additional efforts supported by the grant will include yearround industry tours, job

shadowing opportunities, enhancements to interactive career kiosks, and communication efforts to raise awareness of available programs and community resources.

To learn more about the LCWDB or to participate as a “Learn and Earn” business, contact Carrie McCullough, Workforce Development Board assistant director, at cmc cullough@lancastercounty wib.com or 717-735-0333.

SkillsUSA Championships with a first-place showing at the Heavy Equipment Pennsylvania Skills Competition near Shippensburg on April 2 and 3.

Goshert is currently employed full time as an operator assistant at B.R. Kreider & Son, a paving and excavating contractor located at 63 Kreider Lane, Manheim.

“On that Friday night, (SkillsUSA Championships officials) had an awards ceremony at State Farm Arena,” said Goshert, a 2025 graduate of Warwick High School. “I was like, ‘Well, I made it to nationals anyway.’ They took us backstage, and when they brought us out on stage, they announced the third-place finisher, the second-place finisher and then finally the winner.

I didn’t know I won until then, so that was pretty nerve-racking.”

“I was pretty happy with how I did,” continued Goshert. “There were a couple of tasks I knew I didn’t do so well, and there were others where I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t have done much better than first place.”

At the national event in Atlanta, the competition tested both operating skills proficiency and the knowledge of heavy equipment through written evaluations.

“Heavy equipment is just really big toys that have built the world we live in,” said Goshert. “There’s no one way to operate it. It’s about the instructor showing you how to do it. It’s about how you learn and how you practice it. There’s a lot of hand-eye coordination that goes into it. Some

of it is knowing what you’re going to be doing with that machine.”

Goshert spent his entire senior year of high school at the Brownstown Campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, 231 Snyder Road, Ephrata. Before enrolling in instructor Justin Findley’s class, Goshert had little experience with heavy equipment operations.

“Surprisingly, I had no prior experience,” said Goshert. “Maybe a little with a John Deere riding mower, but nothing as big as I got to run in class or at work.”

“From his first time operating a wheel loader to becoming not only a state champion, but a national champion, Collin showed his determination to be the best that he could,” said Findley. “His

hard work has paid off, and as his instructor, I’m very proud of him and his accomplishments.”

Over a period of two months before the competitions, Goshert received some formal instruction from Findley and B.R. Kreider trainers Lawrence Hershey and Heath Kreiser to prepare himself for the event. But when the chips were down, he leaned on the overall skills that he had been developing since last fall.

“I think (the success was a result of) a couple of different things,” said Goshert. “I think having a lot of general knowledge helped. My teacher at CTC (Findley) helped me a ton. I wasn’t into this stuff before I took his class. That helped. Everyone I work with on a daily basis helped me, and our two trainers (Hershey and Kreiser) showed me how to operate equipment. I think it’s better to learn by watching.”

said. “I joined with a friend Barbara that I worked with, and she and I did herbal things for my wedding. The guild has a lot of different people with a lot of different interests. I always sort of gravitated to wreath-making, and tussie mussies was my thing. Some people are more interested in the culinary herbs or the medicinal herbs, and everybody sort of took their interests, and we shared that knowledge.”

Landis became aware of the guild through word of mouth. “I had heard about the guild through a friend of mine, and I went to the one of the original meetings,” she said. “I was always interested in herbs, so I was very happy to find a group of people who I could discuss that with.”

Landis has been going to guild meetings for 43 years. “I’ve enjoyed the programs and drying herbs,” she said. “I enjoy making the sweet Annie wreaths. It’s very fragrant. I’ve enjoyed learning about all kinds of herbs.”

Landis has seen many changes. “In the ‘80s, herbs were a kind of a new thing in Lancaster County,” she noted. “I had a friend who knew a lot about herbs, and I got interested. And now, of course, herbs are much more well known, but it’s nice when new people can come and just get excited about all the medicinal and culinary uses and other things you can do with herbs.”

During that time, the Conestoga Herb Guild has grown to 70 members. “It’s different because we meet at a public place, and there’s many more members, which means also we have more resources, people who are interested and involved in different ways,” said Landis, who lives in East Lampeter Township. “There are pros and cons to having a small group or a large group, but I enjoy it now the way it is. It’s always nice to meet new people and hear their perspectives, and the members are quite involved with newsletters and different outreach programs, which is nice.”

The guild donates a book to the county library system when a member passes away and sends sympathy cards or a rosemary plant when someone in a member’s family passes.

Keller-Eyer and Landis stated that Herb Fest will be worth the trip.

“It’s about sharing time

with the community, trying to increase our membership, and have people know about our existence,” said KellerEyer. “I’d encourage people to come if they have any interest in herbs, because our president, Susan Atkins, she’s very interested in medicinal herbs,” said Keller-Eyer, who lives in Penn Township. “She makes a lot of salves and that type of thing.”

Landis added, “If you come to the Herb Fest, I think you’ll see the wide range of uses for herbs and like the different people and their interest in herbs. There will be demonstrations and talks, which is very informative, and if you have an interest, I think it would be a good place to start.”

Pathways from pg 1

of Lifelong Learning’s classes and courses are taught at Landis Homes Senior Living Community, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lancaster. The courses are designed for individuals age 55 and older, and the classes attract people who are into their 80s and 90s.

“The goal is to provide educational opportunities for folks 55-plus in Lancaster County,” said Graybill. “It’s really a path to enrichment and service. We are all lifelong learners, even in our senior years.”

Pathways Institute offers up to 40 classes in both the fall and the spring. The fall schedule of classes begins on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 10.

There are fees and memberships associated with taking the courses.

“(The classes) are really engaging,” said Graybill, a Lancaster city resident. “The presenters give information, and there’s always time for questions and feedback. It tends to be very interactive. It’s a nice opportunity for people in the Lititz area.”

Some of the wide variety of topics covered in the courses include local history, studies of renowned authors, cooking, crafting, foreign affairs, contemporary issues, pets, musical history, the arts and health. The courses include field-trip-like off-site excursions and service-learning opportunities.

There are no tests or grades associated with the classes.

“People take the classes for the intellectual engagement,” said Graybill. “It’s a way to engage your curiosity and dive into subjects you didn’t have time for when you were

working. Some of the topics are things to consider as you age.”

As many as 400 Lancaster County students attend Pathways courses each semester. Approximately half of the participants are Landis Communities residents; some are residents of other local retirement communities; and others reside in the northern portions of Lancaster County, the city of Lancaster or communities like Columbia.

“They are average people who have time on their hands,” said Graybill. “They are people who are interested in continuing lifelong learning.”

“We are supported by Landis Homes as an added service for residents,” continued Graybill. “We find that some residents choose Landis Homes because of Pathways. Pathways is one of the many opportunities available to residents at Landis Homes.”

Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning’s teaching staff is made up of 30 instructors from local communities and surrounding communities across Lancaster County.

“Many are retired themselves,” said Graybill. “Some are former teachers or just people who have passions in particular areas.”

Pathways is financed through tuition fees, donations and funds provided by Landis Communities.

“It’s educational enrichment and surface learning,” said Graybill. “It’s about engaging our minds and spirits to become holistically involved in the wider community.”

Pathways Institute was established at Landis Homes Senior Living Community in 2007. Over the past 18 years, Pathways has served thousands of Lancaster County seniors seeking to expand their knowledge bases and sharpen their minds.

Pathways Institute began as an extension of Messiah Lifeways senior living in Mechanicsburg.

“We’ve grown a lot,” said Graybill. “We have a lot more people taking our programs. We have a broader array of classes. We now have name recognition, and we have teachers seeking us out instead of us beating the bushes for instructors.”

teaches audiences about his forgotten friends at community events, churches, schools, libraries, festivals, corporate events, camps and birthday parties, all over Lancaster County and surrounding counties, most recently at venues in Manheim Township, Leola, Lititz, Adamstown, New Holland, Bowmansville, Lebanon and Myerstown.

“I’m a little bit of a performer. Some people call me a reptile comedian,” said Rothacker. “We want people to have fun. Folks have a chance to pet a reptile or touch a snake. You’re going to get a chance to meet the friendliest reptiles you’ve ever seen. I’m playing with the audience. I’m joking with them. If you’re thinking you’re going to sit still, we’re probably not going to allow that. We want to pull the audience’s energy into the room.”

Of the nearly 100 reptiles currently residing at Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, about half of them are available for adoption. There are requirements and an application process involved with adopting reptiles, but the facility is not open to visits from the public.

“If I know there are reptiles out there who people want to give up, I’ll rescue them,” said Rothacker. “Owners pass away. We definitely do adoptions, but we’ll also help network. We can’t say yes to all requests, but we can connect those trying to find reptiles new homes and those who are willing to adopt. Adoption

used to be most of what we did, and we still do it, but the education side has taken on a bigger role.”

There are more than 11,000 species of reptiles in the world. Reptiles are broken down into four major categories: snakes and lizards; turtles and tortoises; crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gharials; and tuataras.

“Biologically, (humans are) warm-blooded, and reptiles are cold-blooded,” said Rothacker. “We have live births, and most of them lay eggs. We all need places to live, and we all need the right foods to be healthy. We think of snakes as being solitary, but they live on top of each other, and that’s typical.

Understanding some of those relationships is fun to explore.”

Rothacker started Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary in Lititz before moving the operation to Rapho Township in 2004. But Rothacker’s love of reptiles can be traced to a curious childhood.

“You could say that the reptiles picked me,” said Rothacker. “Ever since I was a little kid, I was drawn to them. I have memories of catching turtles and petting snakes as a teenager. When I got into the reptile world, I realized there are a lot of people who are in it for the short term. Once I had one pet snake, I realized it was so much fun that I wanted more of them.”
