“Let your light shine at Illumination 2025!”
said Steve Schwartz, executive director of Hope Served, describing the organization’s annual banquet. “This is a fun, interactive evening where you can not only learn about Hope Served, but also taste, touch and experience the impact of Hope Served.”
The event will take place on Friday, Sept. 19, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Kreider Farms Cultural Center at Pleasant View, 547 N. Penryn Road in Manheim.
“We are focusing on a fun, interactive reception throughout the evening, with a brief program at 7:45,” Schwartz remarked.
“There is no guest speaker other than individuals with disabilities sharing their stories of hope and tenacity.”
Along with hearing those stories, attendees can enjoy a coffee tasting by the Hope Served Coffee roasting team.
“You can make and take a Hope Served greeting card,” he shared.
“Hope Served Café will be providing specialty drinks. There will also be a silent auction with donated items from area businesses, a photobooth, demonstrations, live music and other interactive fun. A full buffet dinner will be catered by Hearth and Harrow Restaurant.”

If you’ve been to the Manheim Farm Show and you’re a fan of potatoes, you’ve probably sampled the french fries at the farm show’s stand a time or two. This year, the spuds will be served from a brand-new, permanent building that replaces the temporary trailer used in the past.
To make sure things run smoothly during the busy farm show week, organizers will host a trial run of the stand on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The stand will be located in the spot where the trailer was set up, directly behind the Manheim Borough ballfield concession stand across from Manheim Central High School, 400 E. Adele Ave.
“We ask that people are patient with us if they come to the trial run,” said Nicole Burkholder, one of the members of the french fry committee. “Bear with us as we adjust to the changes and serve you fries.”
Nothing tastes better than Manheim Farm Show french fries, she said, noting that they are made with locally grown potatoes, fresh cut on the spot and fried in lard.

Forty years ago, the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center opened its doors to the community, and now the organization is inviting you to a party to celebrate the milestone.
The festivities will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, at the center, located at GEARS, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.
The celebration will feature special speakers and a catered meal of ham, roasted potatoes, green
In 2024, the farm show went through six tons of potatoes during the course of the week, said Glenn Stoltzfus, former president of the farm show. He added that several individuals help to purchase the potatoes as a donation, improving the french fry stand profits.
“We’re excited to have a new building for our french fry stand, a permanent stand,” Burkholder said. “In the past, we used to have a trailer, and every year, we had to set it up and tear it
down. It was a lot of work. This will be so much more convenient.”
The building also has plenty of room to store supplies yearround. Plans began on the new building last summer, with farm show building and grounds committee members designing the building, obtaining permits and collecting bids from construction companies. The farm show applied for the Fairs Capital Improvement Grants Program, receiving matching funds to build the new structure.
What may just be a tasty treat to farm show attendees actually supplies much-needed funds for farm show operations, Burkholder said. Last year, french fry
sales raised close to $70,000.
While the building will sell both french fries and beverages during the farm show, the trial run will only offer fries, which will be available by cash donation.
“We wanted a trial run to get the flow down since it’s a different setup than we’re used to,” Burkholder explained, noting that the farm show is run by volunteers.
“We have a great team of people
who are working together to organize the farm show.”
More help is always welcome and needed. People who are interested in volunteering can learn more at www.manheim farmshow.org/volunteers or by searching for “Manheim Community Farm Show” on Facebook.
The 71st annual Manheim Farm Show will be held Monday, Oct. 6, through Friday, Oct. 10.

At St. John’s Herr Estate’s annual Fall Fest, you never know what you’ll find - maybe a $5 TV, a singing Chihuahua, or just a whole lot of laughter. Part indoor yard sale, part bake sale and all-around good time, the event is as much about fun and fellowship as it is about bargains.
The Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia.
“We have seasonal items, linens, a plethora of kitchen things, pocketbooks, toys, household items, jewelry,” said resident Carolyn Livingston, a member of the Fall Fest committee. “It’s probably the biggest sale of this kind around here. It’s all in one location. We have a lot of stuff. It’s good stuff, and it’s inexpensive.”
Resident and committee member Andrea Robinson agreed, adding, “You name it, we have it for sale. Where else can you get a TV for $5?”
The community’s chapel will serve as the hub for items, with framed artwork expanding out into the hallway and a separate area for books and baked goods, which are made by residents. Food prepared by St. John’s staff will be available for dine-in or takeout and will include homemade chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sloppy joes, chips and drinks.
St. John’s has been holding Fall Fest for more than 20 years. Items are collected year-round from

This is the second annual Illumination event for Hope Served. The inaugural event held last year drew 150 people eager to support the work of Hope Served, a nonprofit that provides resources and services to people with disabilities.
“We hold this event to invite the broader community to learn about the work of Hope Served and hopefully get involved as volunteers, mentors, donors or prayer partners,” Schwartz said. “This is our biggest fundraiser of
the year.”
Hope Served was founded in 2021 by Manheim resident Kelly Harnish, an adoptive mother of eight young adult children with varying abilities.
“She met many other families concerned about their children’s future, so together these families formed Hope Served with a goal to work on job creation and training for individuals with disabilities,” Schwartz explained. “We have our own coffee brand, roasted locally,

He noted that the organization is excited to have Pleasant View Communities as its Presenting Sponsor for Illumination 2025 and grateful to be allowed to host the event in the new cultural center.
He hopes people will come out for an opportunity to learn more about Hope Served.
“Our event is unique because it is hands-on,” he said. “Come join us for a fun, engaging and meaningful evening.”
Reservations are required to attend the banquet and must be made by Friday, Sept. 12. To make a reservation, visit https://hope served.org/event/illum2025. For more information, contact Schwartz at steve@hopeserved .org or 717-689-7274.
beans, baked macaroni and cheese and dessert, which will be served at noon.
“We have a little extra money in our budget this year, and we thought a 40th anniversary celebration would be fun way to spend some of it,” shared Jess Raush, senior center director. “We wanted to have a celebration to remember all that we’ve come from, all that we’ve done and where we’re going.”
When she mentioned the idea to the seniors who regularly attend the center, they embraced it wholeheartedly.
“Our seniors love any reason to party,” Raush said with a laugh.
She noted that the center has invited influential individuals from its history to come to the celebration. Former directors have been invited to attend, and Raush has also invited family members of senior center attendees, both current and past.
“We are looking forward to reminiscing,” she said. “We want people to share stories of what the senior center meant to their loved ones.”
Opened in 1985, the senior center formed in a building that housed a community center. Working with the Lancaster Office of Aging, the center brought members of a Mount Joy senior center to the new location. The center is now housed in a building that still features a community center, along with a preschool.
Raush plans to involve even the littlest people who attend GEARS in the senior center’s celebration.
“We are asking our GEARS preschoolers, ‘What do you think 40 years from now will look like?’ We want to know their ideas for inventions, their predictions,” she said. Their responses, along with input from seniors, will be collected for a time capsule the center plans to seal and put away to open many years in the future.
There’s always something fun happening at the senior center, Raush said, noting that people come from the Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Conoy, Bainbridge, Manheim and Marietta areas, as well as from Dauphin County.
Seniors sign in when they attend a program, and the center averages 40 to 60 visitors a day depending on the activity. Members enjoy weekly events such as trivia, crafts, sing-alongs and card games, as well as special themed activities such as Cruise Week or Water Week.
“All of our programs are free to attend,” Raush said, noting that donations will be accepted if people want to give. “Donating is not required to come to a program. I always tell people, ‘I want you here more than I want your dollars.’”
People must be at least 60 years old to attend the senior center, which provides much more than just fun programming, Raush remarked.
“There are so many reasons the senior center is important,” she said. “What we really focus on is ending social isolation. We give people a reason to get out of the house and interact with other people. We also offer free lunch Monday through Friday, and it’s a complete meal, so seniors are get-
ting a nutrition lunch. Study after study shows that when seniors participate in activities, volunteer, take group classes, they live longer and more satisfying lives. Their overall quality of life is better than if they stayed home and isolated.”
She especially enjoys watching the relationships that grow between the seniors who attend the center.
“We have a younger senior who has sort of adopted our oldest member, a lady in her 90s,” Raush shared. “She likes doing crafts, but she doesn’t have the dexterity or the eyesight or hearing to do it well anymore, so he helps her out. They both get so much satisfaction out of that.”
Raush invites any senior who is interested to stop in to the center to learn more and try a program or activity.
“People sometimes get very concerned when they hear they have to do paperwork to join us,” she said. “I like to tell them, ‘We are not the doctor’s office. Come in and experience us first, and then do the

She’s proud of her seniors who go out of their way to be warm and welcoming to newcomers.
“Nobody’s going to bite you,” she said with a laugh. “Several of our members would lose their teeth if they tried. Whether you want to sit back and people watch and take it all in, or you want to jump right into the deep end and learn a new card game or try a new activity, everyone will be welcoming. We have so many options for seniors to have a better quality of life all in one place.”

donations by residents and their families. Robinson and Livingston are members of a committee that sorts and prices the donations. They get together for several hours every Saturday from March until the sale, and they love to keep things light and fun while they work. An animatronic Chihuahua that plays the maracas and sings “La Bamba” is their unofficial mascot while they work, and they always bring out a small plaque to place nearby that sums up their group perfectly, they said. It features small nuts affixed with googly eyes and the words, “Sometimes I think we are all nuts.”
“This is our motto to live by,” Livingston jokes. “It’s a lot of work to get ready for Fall Fest, but the same people keep coming back to help. We have a lot of fun.”
She noted that their committee of about 10 residents is just one of several groups who work together to pull off a successful event.
“There is a planning group. There’s a group that specifically does baking. There’s a library group,” she said. “There are a lot of groups that are working on this besides us doing the pricing.”
Proceeds from Fall Fest are used to support the St. John’s benevolent fund and are donated to local nonprofits, including Hands Across the Street in Columbia.
The Fall Fest is cash only. Parking is available in a large lot at St. John’s Herr Estate.
The Bondelandet Lodge, the local chapter of the Sons of Norway, will meet on Friday, Sept. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster.
The program will include a segment on the Norwegian Emigrant Museum, anthems, a brief business meeting, and light refreshments.
