Describing the show “Cinderella: Youth Edition,” a Children’s Workshop Production coming to Susquehanna Stage, cast member Caroline Weber sums it up like this: “It’s a heartwarming show for the whole family, filled with fun songs, dancing and characters. The audience will see a classic story filled with love and laughter.”
Caroline, a ninth-grader who lives in the Hempfield area and attends Lancaster Catholic High School, plays Stepmother in the show and joins a cast of students who will present the musical on select dates from Friday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 20.
The show features the familiar
characters and story from the classic fairy tale.
“‘Cinderella’ is the magical story of a kind girl who dreams of a better life,” Caroline said. “Even though her stepmother
and stepsisters aren’t very nice to her, Cinderella never gives up hope. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, a pumpkin and a little sparkle, she discovers that dreams really can come true.”

Forty years ago, the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center opened its doors to the community, and now the organization is inviting you to a party to celebrate the milestone.
The festivities will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, at the center, located at GEARS, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.
The celebration will feature special speakers and a catered meal of ham, roasted potatoes, green beans, baked macaroni and cheese and dessert, which will be served at noon.
“We have a little extra money in our budget this year, and we thought a 40th anniversary celebration would be fun way to spend some of it,” shared Jess Raush, senior center director. “We wanted to have a celebration to remember all that we’ve come from, all that we’ve done and where we’re going.”
When she mentioned the idea to the seniors who regularly attend the center, they embraced it wholeheartedly.
“Our seniors love any reason to party,” Raush said with a laugh.
She noted that the center has invited influential individuals from its history to come to the celebration. Former directors have been invited to attend, and Raush has also invited family members of senior center attendees, both current and past.
“We are looking forward to reminiscing,” she said. “We want people to share stories of what the senior center meant to their loved ones.”
Opened in 1985, the senior center formed in a building that housed a community center. Working with the Lancaster Office of Aging, the center

warden. “You will enjoy a delicious, well-balanced and affordable Italian dinner and a heaping portion of fun and fellowship.”
The meal will include spaghetti and sauce, meatballs, a garden salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverages.
The food promises to be delicious, too, McCleary said, noting that it will be homemade but prepared by experts.
“Our main cook, Stephanie Gray, is a professional chef and church member,” she said.
McCleary described the setup of the dinner as a hybrid of a buffet and sit-down meal.
“Our guests will be handed a piping hot plate of spaghetti, and once seated, a waitress will take care of salads, drinks and refills,” she said. “Desserts will be selected by the guests from a table filled with sweet delicacies.”
This is the second year in a row that the church has hosted a community dinner, McCleary noted, adding that the first event was very successful.
McCleary said, noting, “There will be five beautifully filled baskets in our silent auction.”
Proceeds from the meal will support ongoing work at the church.
“Like many churches, our congregation is dwindling due to age and infirmity,” McCleary remarked. “Some of the projects we are working to fund are sidewalk repair as mandated by Mount Joy Borough, slate roof repair, flooring replacement in the fellowship hall, salaries and supplies for a refreshed musical program.”
Reservations for the spaghetti dinner are helpful for planning purposes and may be made by calling Gail Fridy at 717-538-0810. There is no deadline for reservations, and walk-ins are welcome. Separate prices will be charged for people age 10 and older and children ages 4 to 9. There is no charge for children under age 4.

Girl Scouts is looking for new members and adult leaders and helpers. Girls can enjoy activities such as a fall product rally; selling candy, nuts and Girl Scout Cookies; a dinner show at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre; a visit to Urban Air; a corn maze; and many other service unit programs. Troop meetings usually include earning badges and patches and often excursions. Every other year, the service unit hosts an encampment for everyone to attend. This past year, it was called “Through the Years,” and girls got to experience and enjoy
of the
activities last

brought members of a Mount Joy senior center to the new location. The center is now housed in a building that still features a community center, along with a preschool.
Raush plans to involve even the littlest people who attend GEARS in the senior center’s celebration.
“We are asking our GEARS preschoolers, ‘What do you think 40 years from now will look like?’ We want to know their ideas for inventions, their predictions,” she said. Their responses, along with input from seniors, will be collected for a time capsule the center plans to seal and put away to open many years in the future.
There’s always something fun happening at the senior center, Raush said, noting that people come from the Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Conoy, Bainbridge,
Manheim and Marietta areas, as well as from Dauphin County.
Seniors sign in when they attend a program, and the center averages 40 to 60 visitors a day depending on the activity. Members enjoy weekly events such as trivia, crafts, sing-alongs and card games, as well as special themed activities such as Cruise Week or Water Week.
“All of our programs are free to attend,” Raush said, noting that donations will be accepted if people want to give. “Donating is not required to come to a program. I always tell people, ‚ÄòI want you here more than I want your dollars.’”
People must be at least 60 years old to attend the senior center, which provides much more than just fun programming, Raush remarked.
“There are so many reasons the
senior center is important,” she said. “What we really focus on is ending social isolation. We give people a reason to get out of the house and interact with other people. We also offer free lunch Monday through Friday, and it’s a complete meal, so seniors are getting a nutrition lunch. Study after study shows that when seniors participate in activities, volunteer, take group classes, they live longer and more satisfying lives. Their overall quality of life is better than if they stayed home and isolated.”
She especially enjoys watch ing the relationships that grow between the seniors who attend the center.
“We have a younger senior who has sort of adopted our oldest member, a lady in her 90s,” Raush shared. “She likes doing crafts, but she doesn’t have the dexterity or the eyesight or hearing to do it well anymore, so he helps her out. They both get so much satisfac tion out of that.”
Raush invites any senior who is interested to stop in to the center to learn more and try a program or activity.
“People sometimes get very concerned when they hear they have to do paperwork to join us,” she said. “I like to tell them, ‘We are not the doctor’s office. Come in and experience us first, and then do the paperwork on your own time.’”
she said with a laugh. “Several of our members would lose their teeth if they tried. Whether you want to sit back and people watch
She’s proud of her seniors who go out of their way to be warm and welcoming to newcomers.

Forget horsepower. This race is all about goat power.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, Falmouth Goat Races, organized and sponsored by the nonprofit Falmouth Civic Association, will be held at David Gerber Field at Governor Stable Park, 101 Governor Stable Road, Elizabethtown. Registration to race with your goat will start at 9 a.m. An opening ceremony and Blessing of the Goats will take place at 10 a.m., with the first race kicking off at 11 a.m. For people who arrive early to the park, breakfast will be served by two on-site vendors beginning at 6 a.m.
“This event is one of a kind,” said Brandie Cramer, Falmouth Civic Association committee member. “There is nothing like it in the area. It’s chockfull of family fun, and it’s something the whole family can enjoy. Once you come one time, you will want to come again.”
Along with racing goats, the event will feature more than 25 craft vendors in a maker’s market. Goat race merchandise will be for sale, featuring a new logo, and
numerous local food vendors will provide refreshments for sale.
“Ice cream is made right there at the park the old-fashioned way, thanks to Milton Grove Church,” Cramer shared. “Fresh kettle corn is popped all day long. We are welcoming a barbecue truck this year and mini doughnuts made fresh, just to name a few.”
Items donated by local businesses will be available to win, and the Bainbridge Fire Department will be on-site with a touch-a-truck opportunity from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Cow Patty Bingo will be held, along with a 50/50 giveaway. Pony rides will be offered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and a local farm will bring baby goats to snuggle for a small fee.
“Homestead Helpers will be coming this year to set up a ‘Pitstop Pedicure’ booth for pre- and post-race hoof care for the goats, if the owner chooses to give their goat an extra edge in the races,” Cramer said. “We are also offering face painting, and there is a playground at the park for the kids to enjoy.”
The Falmouth Goat Races began as a prank. A few local men were
lamenting losses at the horse track when one man joked about betting on goats instead. His friend ran a newspaper ad for goat races and listed the man’s number. Calls poured in, and what started as a joke quickly turned into a favorite community event.
“This event started in 1979,” Cramer shared. “There have been years we have canceled due to weather, COVID, and most recently, my grandmother passing, who was our president, but through all that this is our 45th year.”
She noted that she’s been involved with the event for all of her life, and she’s joined in the organizing efforts by family members, including her mother, aunts, uncles and cousins.
“The goats that come to race are brought by the racers,” Cramer explained. “These are people’s pets or their livelihood as farm animals. We have been told people practice racing with them over the year in order to be ready for race day.”
She noted that due to the importance of the goats to their racers, race organizers set a high standard on animal care and safety, making sure that the goat’s care
The seventh annual Dam Bridge Challenge will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Wrightsville Riverfront Park on Lemon Street and Maple Street in Wrightsville. Hosted by the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association
(LSRA), the paddling event is a fundraiser to support LSRA’s mission to protect the Lower Susquehanna River.
The event will include races for every age, skill level, and paddle craft form. There will be chip
and comfort come first throughout the day.
Proceeds from the goat races are used to keep the event operating year after year, and money also goes back into the community. Funds from the goat races have gone toward building the park playground, supporting local fundraisers and assisting families in need. The civic association also lines Route 441 with flags each year to honor veterans.
“What’s important to us is community and keeping everything we raise right here in the area that helps make this event so amazing and that has continued to support us,” she said. “The only right thing to do is to turn around and lift and support this community as a thank you.”
When Cramer’s grandmother, Nancy Putt-Hower, passed away in February of 2023, the family was uncertain if the goat races would continue.
timing for the competitive races, and the races will include a water start and a finish on land under the finish arch. A festival featuring live music, food, vendors, games, and prizes will also take place on Maple Street from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The schedule of races will include “The Challenge,” a 10-mile race, at 8:45 a.m., with a group safety meeting prior to the race; a 3-mile race at 9:30 a.m.; a quarter-mile kids’ race for those ages 7 to 13 at 11:30 a.m.; and an untimed 1-mile recreational paddle at 1:15 p.m. An awards ceremony for the competitive races will take place at 12:30 p.m. The top three finishers in each category, including Stand-Up Paddle, Single Kayak, Canoe, Surfski, Outrigger Canoe, Tandem Kayak, men’s and women’s divisions, and age divisions, will be recognized.
A Sprint for the Susquehanna Fundraiser Fun Race will take place at 2:45 p.m. For more information or to register for the races, visit www.lowersusquehanna riverkeeper.org/events/ dam-bridge-challenge.
“She was the last of the original group of amazing people who created this event into what it is, and she did so much behind the scenes that no one knew about,” Cramer commented. “But the community, the fans, outpoured their love for this event. They didn’t want to see it end.”
In 2024, organizers put a call out to the community for help if the goat races were to go on, and the community responded. A committee of volunteers was formed, and this year’s event
promises to be better than ever, Cramer said, adding, “This group of people brought an energy and an excitement that revived our love for this event, and I am proud to say this year has the makings to be the best goat race we have ever had.” There is no admission charge for the event, but a small parking fee will be charged. No tickets are required to attend.
For updates, including items to win and information on the businesses that donated, follow “Falmouth Goat Race” on Facebook.

the property only, not who you wish to occupy it.
Linnaea Doty, an eighth-grader at Manheim Central Middle School, portrays the title character. She’s looking forward to presenting the show to audiences.
“This show is such a fun and exciting time,” Linnaea shared. “The cast are all so talented, and they fit their roles perfectly. The choreography and blocking are amazing. The set looks great, and this show is such a magical time. It’s something that you should definitely come see.”
She noted that the best part of being in the cast has been hanging out with new friends and watching the progress the group has made from the first rehearsal until almost showtime.
And although it’s a fun show to watch and perform in, that also presents a bit of a problem at
times, she said.
“The most challenging part of the show for me is not laughing during the show,” she explained. “This musical is so insanely funny that it’s really hard not to laugh at some points.”
For Caroline, playing a villain is a new experience, but she’s embraced it fully.
“The most fun part about playing the Stepmother is that she’s so over the top!” she said. “You get to be dramatic, bossy and a little bit silly - all while making the audience laugh. She’s such a big character that you can really play with her voice, her expressions and her attitude.”
Sam Short, a ninth-grader at Kennard-Dale High School who portrays Prince Christopher, said the show offers entertainment for both kids and adults.
“This is a show that a lot of
people can relate to and understand because it is a classic story with some humor also,” he said.
“Some of the funniest parts of the show for my role are when the stepsisters and other maidens are trying to fight for the prince’s attention. … You can expect a lot of great music and costumes, and a little magic too. Each character has something unique to offer.
The cast has worked really hard to put the show together, and we can’t wait to perform for an audience.”
Playing the prince has presented a challenge to Sam, but it’s one he’s tackled willingly as he’s tried to match the prince’s emotions with the scene’s action.
“In one scene I am acting confident, strong and royal, but then in another scene I am to be more soft, kind and charming,” he said.
For Brodie Kennedy, a Hemp -
field High School ninth-grader who plays the Herald, the show has presented a different kind of challenge. His biggest obstacle? “Learning to do the waltz!” he said.
Like his peers, he’s proud of the production and excited to share the cast’s hard work.
“(This is) a timeless story with great music, fun characters, dancing and group of talented kids that are sure to make you smile,” he said. “Come see how Susquehanna Stage takes on the show in a fantastic direction!”
“Cinderella: Youth Edition” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 12, 13, 19 and 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sept. 13 and 20 and Sunday, Sept. 14. Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta. For more information, visit www .susquehannastage.com.
The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Guest speaker will be Patrick Clarke, who will present “James Buchanan’s Retirement at Wheatland.”
Clarke is the director of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland. He was hired in 2005 as the executive director and CEO for the James Buchanan Foundation and for the preservation of Wheatland.
Today, he guides the preservation, historic collection and interpretation at Wheatland. Through his efforts, more than 47% of the artifacts on display at Wheatland were owned by President Buchanan. Previously, Clarke was executive director and CEO for President Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace and museum in Staunton, Va. Clarke is a graduate of State College in Westfield, Mass., where he received his Bachelor of Arts in history. Clarke received his Master of Science in education from Bank
Street College in New York City. Clarke and his wife reside in East Petersburg.
Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted. The historical society’s building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Members of the public may stop by to see the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. For more information about the historical society, visit www.mountjoyhistory.com.
The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) has received a $130,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation to support and expand its youth workforce development initiatives. The funding will help launch new programs and strengthen existing efforts aimed at preparing the youths of Lancaster County for in-demand careers.
The grant aligns with the Arconic Foundation’s mission and funding priorities to enhance education through skill-building experiences, advance environmental sustainability, and meet essential human needs. The LCWDB’s initiative will help to meet these goals by equipping youths with workforce-ready skills; promoting sustainable employment; and addressing barriers such as transportation, food insecurity, and lack of access to career exploration opportunities.
The LCWDB will use the funding to launch a new “Learn and Earn” summer program to provide income-limited youths with paid work experience and hands-on career exposure. The funding will also be used to provide supportive services, such as transportation, uniforms, and meals, to reduce barriers to participation. Additional efforts supported by the grant will include year-round industry tours, job shadowing opportunities, enhancements to interactive career kiosks, and communication efforts to raise awareness of available programs and community resources.
To learn more about the LCWDB or to participate as a “Learn and Earn” business, contact Carrie McCullough, Workforce Development Board assistant director, at cmccullough@lancastercountywib .com or 717-735-0333.
