East Petersburg Days Will Be Held Sept. 16 to 20

East Petersburg Days provides an ideal opportunity for residents to celebrate their community while showing neighbors what makes it a special place.

The annual event will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, through Saturday, Sept. 20, at East Petersburg Community Park, 2575 Graystone Road.

Rides will open at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 to Friday, Sept. 19, and at 3 p.m. on Sept. 20. Wristbands can be purchased at www.east petersburgday.com. Houghton Enterprises will provide the rides and sell food.

There will be live music beginning at 6 p.m. from Wednesday, Sept. 17, through Sept. 20. On Sept. 17, Andora will return for the third year. Composed of East Petersburg residents, Andora performs ’70s and ’80s music.

The Big Big Jazz Band, an East Petersburg Days staple, will perform on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Sept. 19 is Kids’ Day, highlighted by a musical show by Steven Courtney. There will be an opening ceremony. The East Petersburg Elementary School PTO will

have activities for children, and there will also be alpacas and vendors on-site.

On Sept. 20, the day will begin with a Kids’ Fun Run at 8:30 a.m.,

Dr. Robert Doe is an accidental author.

Prior to 2007, he didn’t consider penning a tome until he had a moment of clarity while doing charity work overseas.

“I never wanted to write a book,” Doe said. “It seemed like the last thing I would ever do. But there was a point in my life when I was transitioning out of the prison work that I was doing, and I was pretty heavily involved in mission

at that point with the Kurds in Iraq. I left the prison, and the next day I’m in Iraq for a month, doing teaching and training. The whole time I’m there, I’m thinking, ‘What am I going to do for my next job?’

And I came back from that trip, wondering, and the first thing I heard when I was praying and the sense I got was to write a book.”

Doe finally finished his book, “Redigging Our Fathers’ Wells,” in early August, and it is available on Amazon.

A lot has changed over the past 43 years, but the Conestoga Herb Guild is still going strong.

The organization will host its annual Herb Fest event on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

Admission is free.

Visitors will enjoy displays of herbs, herb products, and short educational presentations on the culinary and health benefits of herbs. There will also be refreshments and baked goods on sale that were made by members and complimentary coffee and tea. Additional displays will include fresh herbs, succulents, wreaths, bath products, dried herbs, herbal aromatherapy products, fresh and dried bouquets, potted plants and potted herbs, and herbal vinegar.

Guild members will also educate visitors on the herb of the year, chamomile.

Two of the educational programs that will be presented during Herb Fest will by “A Day in the Life of a Bee” by Denny Gorman and “Thirst Tea for Knowledge: Distinguishing Different Types of Tea” by Heidi Bernard.

The event is a fundraiser for the Conestoga Herb Guild. For more information, go to www .conestogaherbguild.org.

Guild members Karen KellerEyer and Nancy Landis will be at Herb Fest. Keller-Eyer and Landis are the only charter members still in the group, which was initially an offshoot of a guild on the other side of Lancaster. Keller-Eyer attended the group’s first meeting in October 1982

after her in-laws saw a notice in a newspaper.

In the early days, the Conestoga Herb Guild had fewer than 15 members and met at each other’s homes. “I joined when I was engaged to be married, and I wanted to do herbal things for my weddings,” Keller-Eyer said. “I joined with a friend Barbara that I worked with, and she and I did herbal things for my wedding. The guild has a lot of different people with a lot of different interests. I always sort of gravitated to wreath-making, and tussie mussies was my thing. Some people are more interested in the culinary herbs or the medicinal herbs, and everybody sort of took their interests, and we shared that knowledge.”

Landis became aware of the guild through word of mouth. “I had heard about the guild through a friend of mine, and I went to the one of the original meetings,” she said. “I was always interested in herbs, so I was very happy to find a group of people who I

could discuss that with.”

Landis has been going to guild meetings for 43 years. “I’ve enjoyed the programs and drying herbs,” she said. “I enjoy making the sweet Annie wreaths. It’s very fragrant. I’ve enjoyed learning about all kinds of herbs.”

Landis has seen many changes. “In the ’80s, herbs were a kind of a new thing in Lancaster County,” she noted. “I had a friend who knew a lot about herbs, and I got interested. And now, of course, herbs are much more well known, but it’s nice when new people can come and just get excited about all the medicinal and culinary uses and other things you can do with herbs.”

During that time, the Conestoga Herb Guild has grown to 70 members. “It’s different because we meet at a public place, and there’s many more members, which means also we have more resources, people who are interested and involved in different ways,” said Landis, who lives in East Lampeter Township. “There are pros and cons to having a small group or a large group, but I enjoy it now the way it is. It’s always nice to meet new people and hear their perspectives,

and the members are quite involved with newsletters and different outreach programs, which is nice.”

The guild donates a book to the county library system when a member passes away and sends sympathy cards or a rosemary plant when someone in a member’s family passes.

Keller-Eyer and Landis stated that Herb Fest will be worth the trip.

“It’s about sharing time with the community, trying to increase our membership, and have people know about our existence,” said Keller-Eyer. “I’d encourage people to come if they

have any interest in herbs, because our president, Susan Atkins, she’s very interested in medicinal herbs,” said Keller-Eyer, who lives in Penn Township. “She makes a lot of salves and that type of thing.”

Landis added, “If you come to the Herb Fest, I think you’ll see the wide range of uses for herbs and like the different people and their interest in herbs. There will be demonstrations and talks, which is very informative, and if you have an interest, I think it would be a good place to start.”

“Cinderella” Brings Magic to the Stage

Describing the show “Cinderella: Youth Edition,” a Children’s Workshop Production coming to Susquehanna Stage, cast member Caroline Weber sums it up like this: “It’s a heartwarming show for the whole family, filled with fun songs, dancing and characters. The audience will see a classic story filled with love and laughter.”

Caroline, a ninth-grader who lives in the Hempfield area and attends Lancaster Catholic High School, plays Stepmother in the show and joins a cast of students who will present the musical on select dates from Friday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 20.

The show features the familiar characters and story from the classic fairy tale.

“‘Cinderella’ is the magical story of a kind girl who dreams of a better life,” Caroline said. “Even though her stepmother and stepsisters aren’t very nice to her, Cin-

derella never gives up hope. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, a pumpkin and a little sparkle, she discovers that dreams really can come true.”

Linnaea Doty, an eighthgrader at Manheim Central Middle School, portrays the title character. She’s looking forward to presenting the show to audiences.

“This show is such a fun and exciting time,” Linnaea shared. “The cast are all so talented, and they fit

their roles perfectly. The choreography and blocking are amazing. The set looks great, and this show is such a magical time. It’s something that you should definitely come see.”

She noted that the best part of being in the cast has been hanging out with new friends and watching the progress the group has made from the first rehearsal until almost showtime.

Fall Fest Promises Fun and Finds

At St. John’s Herr Estate’s annual Fall Fest, you never know what you’ll findmaybe a $5 TV, a singing Chihuahua, or just a whole lot of laughter. Part indoor yard sale, part bake sale and all-around good time, the event is as much about fun and fellowship as it is about bargains.

The Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia.

“We have seasonal items, linens, a plethora of kitchen things, pocketbooks, toys, household items, jewelry,” said resident Carolyn Livingston, a member of the Fall Fest committee. “It’s probably the biggest sale of this kind around here. It’s all in one location. We have a lot of stuff. It’s good stuff, and it’s inexpensive.”

Resident and committee member Andrea Robinson agreed, adding, “You name it, we have it for sale. Where else can you get a TV for $5?”

The community’s chapel will serve as the hub for items, with framed artwork expanding out into the hallway and a separate area for books and baked goods, which are made by residents. Food prepared by St. John’s staff will be available for dine-in or takeout and will include homemade chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sloppy joes, chips and drinks.

St. John’s has been holding Fall Fest for more than 20 years. Items are collected year-round from donations by residents and their families. Robinson and Livingston are members of a committee that sorts and prices

the donations. They get together for several hours every Saturday from March until the sale, and they love to keep things light and fun while they work. An animatronic Chihuahua that plays the maracas and sings “La Bamba” is their unofficial mascot while they work, and they always bring out a small plaque to place nearby that sums up their group perfectly, they said. It features small nuts affixed with googly eyes and the words, “Sometimes I think we are all nuts.”

“This is our motto to live by,” Livingston jokes. “It’s a lot of work to get ready for Fall Fest, but the same people keep coming back to help. We have a lot of fun.”

She noted that their committee of about 10 residents is just one of several groups who work together to pull off a successful event.

“There is a planning group. There’s a group that specifically does baking. There’s a library group,” she said. “There are a lot of groups that are working on this besides us doing the pricing.”

Proceeds from Fall Fest are used to support the St. John’s benevolent fund and are donated to

“Cinderella”

And although it’s a fun show to watch and perform in, that also presents a bit of a problem at times, she said.

“The most challenging part of the show for me is not laughing during the show,” she explained. “This musical is so insanely funny that it’s really hard not to laugh at some points.”

For Caroline, playing a villain is a new experience, but she’s embraced it fully.

“The most fun part about playing the Stepmother is that she’s so over the top!” she said. “You get to be dramatic, bossy and a little bit sillyall while making the audience laugh. She’s such a big character that you can really play with her voice, her expressions and her attitude.”

Sam Short, a ninthgrader at Kennard-Dale High School who portrays Prince Christopher, said the show offers entertainment for both kids and adults.

offer. The cast has worked really hard to put the show together, and we can’t wait to perform for an audience.”

Playing the prince has presented a challenge to Sam, but it’s one he’s tackled willingly as he’s tried to match the prince’s emotions with the scene’s action.

“In one scene I am acting confident, strong and royal, but then in another scene I am to be more soft, kind and charming,” he said.

For Brodie Kennedy, a Hempfield High School ninth-grader who plays the Herald, the show has presented a different kind of challenge. His biggest obstacle? “Learning to do the waltz!” he said. Like his peers, he’s proud of the production and excited to share the cast’s hard work.

Dayspring To Present Lecture Series

Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host its 2025 Remember America Lecture Series titled “The True Christian History of America’s Independence” on Tuesdays, Sept. 16, Sept. 23, Sept. 30, and Oct. 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

As the country approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, each lecture will feature different topics related to America’s journey to independence. Randy

Hilton will present the first lecture, “The Dawn of Independence,” and Dan Stone will present the other three lectures, “The Build-up to Independence,” “The Struggle for Independence,” and “The Declaration of Independence.” The event is free and open to the public. then and then put on the shelf, because when I finished it, I said, ‘OK, this is an interesting story, but more for those who are part of it, kind of like a memoir,’” he said. “I want to know that what happened with what we did has had an impact now, so I was waiting for the now. And in the last few years, things have really changed in Lancaster County, and then I knew it was time to release it. The second half of the book is more bringing it up to the current.”

Doe will hold an official book release and signing on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon as part of an event at Landisville Camp Meeting, 201 Church St., Landisville. Preregistration is appreciated but not required. Go to https:// tinyurl.com/drdoesigning to sign up.

“The overall theme of this book in the beginning is, what about the groups of people that were here in the beginning of Lancaster County?” said Doe,

mentioning the Native Americans, Mennonites, and Quakers. “Each of those groups had a dream. Each of those groups felt there was something they were supposed to accomplish, and they were brought out of Europe or wherever they came from on a boat. The idea was they were going to achieve something, and because they were all persecuted and they were Christian, their assumption was they were leaving that persecution. They thought, ‘We’re coming here and we’re going to be able to express fully what we believe God’s told us to do.’ The book is the story of the different dreams and how they got lost along the way. They got broken, they got diverted. They didn’t end up where they felt they were going to end up.”

Proceeds will benefit Light of Hope, a community service organization that was created by a group of churches in the city of Lancaster in 2001. “They had a

very specific thing in mind, building partnerships and doing community service together,” Doe said.

Doe is originally from New England and now resides in Cape Cod. In between, he spent decades in Lancaster County. A family physician by trade, Doe worked in the emergency department at Lancaster General Hospital for 20 years and at an urgent care facility. “I lived here for 35 years and put a lot of my life into these stories,” Doe said. “I believe Lancaster County has a very unique place of spiritual history that very few places can mimic.” Doe, who also helped build a medical clinic in Kona, Hawaii, said Lancaster County ranks high per capita in donating money to missions and sending people on missions.

Following the book signing and a lunch break, there will be a program called Trauma, Deliverance, and Inner Healing Training from 1 to 5 p.m., which will

include book contributors

Janet Keller Richards, Abby Abildness, Lloyd Hoover, and Keith Yoder.

“We’re going to do some specific teaching and training on trauma,” Doe said. “What is the number one issue in the world today? Mental health. And what’s at the root of it? Trauma. Look at all the wars, look at the violence, look at the conflict between political parties and almost every nation around the world. And the result of that is the younger generations, Gen Z, Gen Alpha, about 40% have anxiety and depression. We’re going to be addressing that. If that could have been solved by the medical system alone, it wouldn’t be there, would it? There’s got to be more, and the more is looking at the whole person’s body and spirit, and that’s what we’re going to be addressing that afternoon.”

Doe wants his book to galvanize the community.

“My hope is that many of the people that were

Registrations can be made on the website and will be accepted the morning of the events. “Every year it continues to grow, and we have more interesting costumes than the year before,” East Petersburg Days chair Kristin Troop said. “Whether you’re a runner or a walker, it’s a great course for everybody.”

Manheim Pike, which will start at 10 a.m. The rides will also open at 3 p.m. and close at 10 p.m. “Whether you’re young or old and there’s rides that can accommodate all the age,” said Troop.

A golf ball drop will he held at 6 p.m. with the help of the East Petersburg Fire Department. There will be cash prizes. Tickets can be purchased online or in person.

Local band PopScotch will play music from the ’80s to the current time from 6 to 9:30 p.m. A fireworks display will start at 9:30 p.m.

“Some of the things that we’re most excited about are our sponsors that are in our community. Lancaster Toyota has been a big sponsor. Dinse Dental, S. Clyde Weaver, and Aubrey Montgomery from State Farm have been our top sponsors this year, making all of these events come to

life,” said Troop. “Once we get through East Pete Days, we have two more events, our Pumpkin Fest in October and Santa in the Park, so without them, we really couldn’t be doing what we’re doing. We’re excited about some of the new renovations happening in our park that will only make our events really come to life at some point. It’s been a great year of planning all of these events and getting everything to fall into place. The things that we get so excited about are just that the communities have a space to come together, see old friends, neighbors, catch up with people, and just have a nice event that’s right in our backyard.”

The event is also an opportunity to draw attention to East Petersburg Community Park. “We love to showcase our green space,” Troop said. “We do find that it’s a little hidden gem in Hempfield, so we’d love to bring people out and create just these environments and these opportunities for people to come together.”

East Petersburg Days began in 1989 as a one-day fundraiser and continues to be a source of community pride. “One of the things that I think is so exciting is that we really try to incorporate our East Petersburg Fire Department, our East Petersburg PTO into our events and the Lions Club as well, to help us create this whole community spirit,” said Troop. “We have the Boy Scouts that will help with the 5K cleanup and the water station. Even our band on Wednesday night is all a group of local guys from high school and growing up in East Petersburg. So that is one of the things where we like our small little community, and we also like sharing it with a community around us as well.”

Educational Programs for Seniors Posted

Quest for Learning Lancaster has announced its fall 2025 programs. Sessions will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, on Thursday mornings from Sept. 25 through Oct. 30.

Quest for Learning is a nonprofit run entirely

by volunteers that has offered educational programs to people of retirement age in Lancaster for almost 50 years. Sessions will be presented by local experts in their fields.

2025

The eight programs that will be offered are “The 19th Annual Richard Keller Memorial Series”; “The Making of Film Classics,” presented by Millersville University faculty; a Short Story Discussion Group; “Lancaster African American History”; “Historical Trees of Lancaster County”; “Animal Behavior and Ecology: Timing, Place,

Two 50-minute sessions will take place each Thursday, one at 9:40 a.m. and one at 11 a.m., with a coffee and cookie break in between.

There is a fee, which covers the cost of the entire series. For more information or to register, visit www.questlancaster.org.
